Title: WCK serving on St. Vincent following volcano eruption 🌋
Please join me in donating to World Central Kitchen in St Vincent
The WCK Relief Team arrived shortly after the eruption, connecting with local community groups and activating restaurants to prepare hot meals.
|
La Soufrière on St. Vincent has erupted dozens of times in the last two weeks, at times sending ash 26,000 feet into the air and covering communities.
📷: Nick Spencer
|
|
On April 8 at 8:41am, a massive explosion came from the La Soufrière volcano on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent, the first eruption since 1979. Eruptions have continued in the days since, sending dangerous ash and debris into the air—so deep in some areas that roofs are starting to collapse. Thankfully most residents were able to evacuate safely from the Red Zone, but 20,000 people are now displaced from their homes.
|
|
The WCK Relief Team arrived shortly after the first eruption, connecting with local community groups and activating restaurants to prepare hot meals. While some St. Vincent residents were able to evacuate to nearby countries via cruise ship, most have relocated to the south of the island where they are staying in shelters or with family and friends. Private homes are now filled with displaced families, and food and water remain a huge concern for residents.
|
|
We are now serving 4,000 meals daily to over 50 locations on St. Vincent. The biggest challenge for the WCK team on the ground is how to reach displaced families that are spread out over a wide area, rather than being in big congregate shelters due to Covid. We are also delivering meals on the island of Bequia, just south of St. Vincent, where some residents have evacuated to.
|
|
We met Lolita & Fitz-Allan (left) while delivering the plates across the island made by two local partners, Mariners Hotel and Flow Wine Bar. Sir Roy (right) is staying with friends in the Barrouallie area. By purchasing meals from restaurants, we are also supporting the local economy during this difficult time.
|
|
Many schools on St. Vincent have been turned into informal shelters for residents. With no running water, cooking is not possible, so we are delivering lunch and dinner each day. Ms. Kirby (left) oversees the Barrouallie Technical School shelter on the west coast, just south of the Red Zone.
The island is facing compounding challenges in the weeks ahead. Crops and livestock that communities depend on have been completely lost. Water has been contaminated and supplies of bottled options are running low.
To increase our ability to provide fresh food across the island, additional WCK staff are now on St. Vincent and we are setting up a kitchen at the Hospitality & Maritime Institute. In conjunction with our local restaurant partners, we expect to produce up to 8,000 hot meals each day.

From 1 -3 am we had torrential rains, and our house felt like an island
inside waterfalls all around. The memories of Maria kicked in.
Gut wrenching sounds propelled the interior perimeter door
and window checking. The blare of rushing water took over
for hours. More fear than threat. Now we have three river channels
in our East yard. Attempts to go back to sleep after 3 am were
intermittently interrupted by Mister Hermit Crabbie somewhere
way too close to the bedroom window. Maybe he wanted to come
inside ? On the hunt for him now to move him far away.
We see sun and the solar system has begun to hum. Stay well.

Storm and flood watch remains, visibility low. We are saturated and receiving
constant showers. Every gut and street is overflowing.
If you think you have to fly or sail somewhere today, don't. Wait one more
day and look ahead. We have weather all around us and mountains hiding
in fog banks in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Haiti. You may think
you can get there from here in your tiny aircraft or vessel but you could
also run into a few angry Greek systems out there.

Car wash rains on and off all day from every direction. Mother Nature
deciding to push thru the islands one more time and create a fear
instigator in the SW Caribbean again. We thank our lucky stars.
So far so good. New beans, melons and tomato seedlings are trying
to keep their heads above water. It is going to be a 2 blanket night.
Mariners, beware of those North coast warnings. An almost yacht
was seen pushing uphill on those high waves today. That was a rough
sail. Keep checking your weather warnings, please stay safe.

Our first hurricane experience in St Thomas was Hurricane Luis in 1995
with Marilyn following up close behind. Ignorance was bliss . Not anymore.
Tonight's dinner table discussion was all about the 3rd anniversary of Irma
coming tomorrow. The noon til 6 pm hours of Sept 6 2017 burns in our
brains and those memories will drive us to be over prepared for the
rest of our Caribbean life.
Irma......the 6 hour car crash
Maria....the 32 hr car wash
Two Cat 5 storms so different and way too close together.
There are many still 3 yrs later on our islands with repairs not finished,
compromised housing and insecurities we can't imagine.
We remain grateful.

Hey Mainlanders,
After 8 direct hits, and 2 Cat 5's take it from an islander; if you can
drive away from a Hurricane do it earlier than later. Take a different
route , stay in a motel, chill out. The memory imprint of Cat 2 or
3 winds is to be avoided. Nature's screams will haunt you for
every storm season to come. You owe it to your family.

After a quiet day and sighs of relief, the winds have picked up in gusts up to 40 mph at the tops of the mountain according to friends there. It is so cool that the thermals and an extra blanket came out. Cool car wash rains are swirling West to East. This is the normal backlash you get when you think you got off Scott Free. This was a red dawn, the picture does not pull up the rosey red hue

That light lingered til dawn. It was completely

Pineapple #3 for 2020...hazy cool morning, greening up from frequent showers
over weekend. Finished last bit of shower roofs just in time for any incoming.
Isabel...is the ruckus in the kitchen what we call " pantry pets " ? Our terrier
is in charge of security. 🐕. Pay attention now. Maybe next round of SAL will
do us some favors.

We are 10 degrees cooler and forecasted to have more rain.Bob the deer came
to snatch some starfruit early this morning. We have smaller cay deer and larger
mule deer. Do you see deer on your island ? We are greening up from yesterday's
rain.

happening. We are so lucky.

We saw a little blue and pink at sunrise this morning. Cloud formation is
visible.
Dust is much lighter today. The deer came early to nibble on starfruit again.

This is usually the gorgeous sunset shot. We can see that sliver of moon.
We saw a hint of pale blue sky towards the south in the late afternoon.
We are lucky to have a bit of breeze. Super hot today, heat index was 101F .
Unheard of in June .

Good Morning from the dusty NW side of St Thomas. There is the slightest
breeze that we are so grateful for. Air conditioning is a fantasy.

In our 27 yrs here, never this much dust. Awful. There is an island out there.
Check your solar panels and rinse your plants if you can.

- Sahara Dust

- Date: Sat, 20 Jun 2020 07:27:01 -0400

No horizon line from the pool deck and the little island in our view has
disappeared.
Pilots beware. There will be allot of aircraft washing. Will keep an eye on
the solar panels too. Hard to use what little cistern water that is left to
rinse
off the panels. Imagine all this dust on your veggie garden?

We had a few passing showers today. Grateful to not have to use our
precious cistern water to water the plants. Our dump is on fire and
the East end is crispy dry.
The Saharan dust graph looks hopeful today to allow a few more showers.
We will take any moisture we can get.
Stay well.

Hot, humid, clear horizon, ......looks like the pineapples are happy.
As always Caribbean people are facing the seasonal " get ready"
list. Our pantries are full from Corona Virus isolating. We continue
to fix, paint and secure the leftover damage from Irmaria.
We are so lucky to live among the most gracious folks on the planet.

Temps just dropped. We have been hearing thunder for 24 hrs and now finally
the rain is here. Drifting West to East. It smells so fantastic. In the last 45
days
we have had new gutters installed (only had a temporary gutter up since Irma),
re-surfaced the cistern and re-plumbed both cisterns.Ready to collect that
rain.
I think the water man can rest today. Wishing some rain comes your way.

That horizon line has not been this defined in weeks. Fingers crossed that
the easing of Sahara Dust will clear the way for some rain. We are the
hottest,
earliest ,driest in our 27 yrs here. The pool is at 90 degrees already. Very
tough on the veggies, but the beans and tomatoes are trying.
The next 6 months will test us . We are so fortunate to
live this Caribbean life with the most gracious people on the planet.
Let's honor those that faced so much defending our countries. My Dad in
WWII flying over Europe. My Uncle in the S. Pacific in hand to hand
conflict. We must honor the commitment of all of those
that serve in so many ways. Courage can't be measured.
