After 2 bouts of dengue, long term chykungunya (sp) , zika and 8 hurricanes
in our last 26 years here, we are better prepared than most. We know how
to get thru disasters and take care of ourselves.
As usual; prepare for the worst and hope for the best and take
care of your neighbors. Plant some seeds today . We are lucky
enough to have perfect weather to grow our own food. Just a few
pots of veggies, tomatoes and lettuce on the deck can go a long way.
Embrace our days on our beautiful islands.
We will get thru this.

We are 86 F today, loads of humidity and passing showers. The solar system
is not feeling full gain til about 9am now and seems to taper off around 4 pm.
Our off the grid life is always a challenge this time of year. We have had
rip tide warnings for about 2 weeks now, sailors and swimmers beware.
These tomato seedlings should bear ripe ones by mid January.

There are some that would line up at 3 a.m. to take part in re-opening the big box store that blew up in Irma over 2 years ago. We have come a long way. Another few years to finish the hotels and houses still under blue tarps and we will feel more recovered.
As we live off the grid during the short days up til Dec 20; the shortest day of solar gain, we recall our sailor skills by conserving everything that takes power including the water pump. We are grateful for sunshine for the panels and rain for our cisterns. The next round of veggie plants are flourishing.
Caribbean people are masters of self reliance.

Morning heavy showers at 3:30 am and it was as light as if it were 5:45 am.
Was that "rainlight"? After studying the images and reading the reports
we will button up for Cat 1. Why not ? Her pressure is dropping, she
is moving a very sluggish 7mph and has a NE curve in 12 hours.
The aviators packed the hangar . All day yesterday the pilots and
mechanics competed for the most informed meteorologist award.
The mechanics won. All tucked in.
We have to prepare for a surprise and hope it is just a good
long card game.
Karen has that frosty white center , don't get fooled.

Dear Mrs Hogg,
Your fear, anxiety, and feelings count no matter the measure of your Dorian
damage. You went thru the event. Memories of the sounds, the shaking,
the violence of Dorian will be with you for a long time. Your sense of
safety is your primal loss.
Irma burned a fear in Virgin Islanders that blossoms every time a
new storm is named. Flashbacks and foreboding are built in.
We have a new strong tight roof and when it rains hard or the wind makes
that certain sound the checking for leaks in the interior perimeter of the
house becomes a calming practice.
After two years and a few good scares internal fortitude has returned
as our survival skill. We are all on the same see saw. We island
folks get you. Take care of yourself .
Your island nation's progress is astounding.
We are awed by Bahamian strength.

As Jerry blasts off North, we hear waves pounding all the way up here on the NW hilly side of St Thomas at 650ft..we usually only hear the pounding surf during Christmas winds or March ground seas. The air is still and kind of cool. Hoping Jerry behaves and stays away from Bermuda. We too heard the loud chirping of tree frogs around 3 pm, broad daylight, very rare.
Next round soon come.

The aviators are packing the hangar on Friday. I'm going around the perimeter
picking up the flotsam that a gardener's acreage constantly collects.
The pantry now includes the crackers in a can and instant mash. The pet food
is double stocked in a water tight bin. The beer and wine rack is almost full.
You can chant, pray or wish , demand or ask Jerry to go north but he is going
to do whatever he wants. See the system tucked up tight under the SW side of
Puerto
Rico? looks pretty powerful. Jerry is being wooed by influencers all around him.
Don't kid yourself.
Be "readier" than you were for Dorian. Then you have a cleaned up tighter
ship, and can relax by Sunday and pop a cold one.
We are "double nutting " the solar panels.. The propane tanks are full.
We make our own drinking water like most island folks. Do you ?
We are cooler than yesterday. The temp at 4:30am was a cool 74.
Let's just get this season over with.
Let us know what you know. Stay safe.

Ten days after we got bombed by strong Cat 5 Irma in Sept of 2017,
we were warned of a possible "tropical storm " named Maria on our little
fuzzy transistor am radio sitting next to the flashlight.
In hindsight I am grateful that our tv's and computers and wifi were
not working. The anticipation and too much information about this
Maria coming would have been too much.
The pool was green swamp water that we were still using to flush
our toilet. What was left of the bush was salt water burned brown
and there was no sense of new foliage
emerging. Our gutters were gone, so no cistern collections
were being taken and we had buckets and coolers all lined up
under what was left of the
facia boards on the damaged roof to collect that sweet
clean rain to come.
I was so desperate to feel cool fresh water on my skin I
remember standing under the edge of the
roof in the first passing rains of Maria and taking a shower with
my clothes on. Of course multi tasking a little laundry duty while I washed
my hair in the rain. I almost cried it felt so good. My green beans and
volunteer tomatoes jumped out of
the ground after Maria. She was a very mean long steady high speed
car wash . She swamped us good and finished
re-carving the hillside rivers around our little island of a house.
Dear Bahamians , I am so so sorry that you are facing this weather
system now. Hopefully you will feel a drop in the temps, get a good
long shower and some water for your buckets and cisterns. Cool rain
is so much better than salt water crusts.
Collect as much as you can.

The good news is the last sentence of this article.Somehow, someway, some people will stay and re-invent themselves and their surroundings. It takes years , as we know in the Virgin Islands .
Patience is the key to surviving the aftermath. Never forget that government workers and responders lost their homes too. Losing everything and still trying to fulfill responsibilities is very difficult when you are in shock.
Patience is sharing everything with all in your community. That is what it takes.

Two years after Irma and our memories are vivid and our hearts full
for the Bahamian people. They face a brutal path of recovery.
We are still on that path.
The warmth and love they will give each other and receive from the world
will feel overwhelming and empowering. Island folks know how to
take care of each other everyday no matter what the circumstances and
somehow find a way to be thankful even in the worst of times. We are
gifted by the love of life itself.
The next few months will feel like a struggle for survival on an hourly
basis. Mother Nature will bear gifts as she slowly regains
her strength. Pace yourself. Pace yourself. Nothing will ever be rebuilt
as it was. Only your hearts will be stronger.
We all will have to evolve into someone else as Mother Nature
is continually disrespected.
We are all we.

Isabel, here are more pictures of St Thomas, still allot of assessment going on.
We observed again yesterday intense temperature drop around 4 pm as Dorian's tail pulled away in between West End St Thomas and the Spanish Virgin Islands Culebra and Vieques. With about a half hour of rapid repeating "fireworks" thunder inside the clouds; static electricity , imagine the power and cold air inside those huge thunder heads. We are grateful to see sun this morning and hoping for some solar gain for our off grid system.
As you can see from this article those still under tarps and plywood lost any ground gained and face what is coming without solid roofs.Almost 2 years and millions of dollars in aid and our public housing buildings remain undone.

A few wrecked aircraft. Some trees and bush down. Nerves frayed. No wifi or internet. Using a cell phone hotspot. Cloudy, cool, rainy all day. Around 4 pm the continuing thunder sounded like a long fireworks display coming up from SW to boost Dorian. The sudden drop in temp is an indicator of bad bad stuff to come. He us going to be nasty. At this point just prep for a Cat 5 and you will have no worries.
We are so lucky to have our off the grid solar system intact. Surrounded by sound of neighbor's generators. No matter how tight you think your house is sweeping leaves up inside is always part of the deal.
Pay attention. Next round be"readier". We are so lucky to live among Caribbean folks. |

I've been writing for StormCarib since 1999 and lived in St Thomas since 1993. You tell me, we don't remember a named hurricane in August? A few in July, plenty in September, some October and November. Do you remember an August hurricane in St Thomas?
Dorian surprised us. We did prep for a tropical storm but certainly not for a hurricane. We did not tie enough stuff down. This is the first hurricane that our solar panels have stayed rooftop for. It takes us a few hours and some strong friends to take them down. We are very lucky that nothing flew into them. Our first coconuts since Irma are within pitching distance of our panels.
Dorian taught us some lessons. The spaghetti tracks did show one strand a few days ago that came close to what stuck on our walls. We have been surprised before . Not tucking completely in can make you feel powerless when it is too late to finish that one last thing.
It does not get any easier as the seasons re-emerge to haunt us. The totality of our memories get all riled up. Forecasting is much better than decades ago but Nature will do her thing.
We are so grateful that our friends in Puerto Rico did not have to experience the Cat 1 Dorian as we did here on the West End. We are all WOKE now. |

Dorian seems to have slowed to a car wash. More wind than rain in long brushes
of
splatting moisture. We did not prepare enough. Some bigs plants and gardening
debris was tossed across the decks. Who knew?
Folks out driving past noon curfew by 1pm had
a scary ride home. We heard traffic on road above us during the gestation of
the Cat 1 bad boy .Just ran the generator for another hour to beef up
our off the grid solar battery system, so we have fan on "1" now.
There will be no solar gain today and we will have to run generator again.
We are so lucky to have a solid roof. Imagine going thru this under a tarp?
We know for sure we are under a collective post traumatic stress syndrome high
alert. That whistling sound in the shutters is enough to remind us of
how far we've come and how little power we have when Mother Nature
chooses to kick us.
We have hours to go. Can't wait for tomorrow morning.
Hang tuff Puerto Rico.

Dorian is confused. He likes to wander I guess. He is slated now to come pretty much closer to us. As I type there is light rain and wind. Hope it stays this way. We will be under curfew at noon until 6am tomorrow. Hope this changes. Our electricity went out and they said it was unrelated to the storm. They are back on now. Hopefully it will last through the passing. Waiting for the 11am report.

The aviators scrambled, negotiated, and tucked in the charter and general aviation aircraft into the hangars by dark tonight just in case. Looks like a lesson in geometry and physics.
Where will the captive dolphins be during storm alerts this season? Imagine being in trapped in a metal pen in the ocean during a lightening storm ? Like horses in a burning barn.
We still see too many blue tarp roofs . We all have an involuntary muscle and gut memory. |

Meanwhile might as well clear the guts and ditches around here. Expect rain.

Island neighbors please update us on your status. TROPICAL STORM DORIAN PUBLIC ADVISORY
Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) Commissioner Jean-Pierre Oriol announces that, in anticipation of Tropical Storm Dorian, the Division of Environmental Protection (DEP) anticipates negative environmental impacts caused by storm-water runoff.
DPNR advises the public to refrain from using the coastal waters throughout the Territory until further notification. DPNR is also advising parents to instruct their children to keep away from storm water-impacted beaches as well as areas with manholes and storm water flooding. There may be an elevated health risk to anyone swimming in storm water-impacted areas as a result of increased concentrations of bacteria.
All persons should also be aware that storm water runoff may also contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health and therefore all persons should avoid areas of storm water runoff (i.e. guts, puddles, and drainage basins). DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted areas and waters.
DPNR also advises the public to complete the following tasks to PROTECT YOUR DRINKING WATER resources in preparation for an impending hurricane disaster and the resulting potential water resources emergency:
1. Downspouts leading to cisterns should be completely disconnected or blocked securely to protect the water source.
2. A two (2) week supply of potable water should be stored in a safe weatherproof place, preferably indoors. This water supply will provide water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. To figure out how much water you will need for a two (2) week supply: multiply the number of residents by 20 gallons per person per day and then multiply that number by 14 days. For example, a family of four should store 1120 gallons of water. (Ex: 4 people x 20 gallons/person/day x 14 days = 1120 gallons)
3) An adequate supply of disinfecting agents [liquid chlorine containing 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (i.e. Clorox), powdered chlorine (active ingredient calcium hypochloride) or iodine] should be on hand and stored in a safe place.
4) A supply of sterile potable water bottles and other suitable containers should be secured to store water.
5) A list of emergency water supplies may be obtained from the Division of Environmental Protection of DPNR at Charles W. Turnbull Regional Library on St. Thomas or #45 Mars Hill, Frederiksted on St. Croix.
As a reminder, these precautions should be taken ONLY if a major storm or hurricane is imminent and poses a severe threat to your water supply.
Moreover, DPNR advises ALL CONTRACTORS, DEVELOPERS, AND HOME BUILDERS to immediately maintain and implement additional erosion and sediment control practices at all areas where property is cleared, graded, filled, or otherwise disturbed.
Please take this opportunity to visually locate areas that may need additional erosion and sediment control measures. Measures include, but are not limited to the following: • Preservation of natural vegetation • Drainage Swales / Diversions • Temporary & Permanent Seeding • Soil Sealers / Binders • Erosion Control Mats • Soil Retaining Walls • Construction Entrances / Exits • Silt Fencing • Sediment Traps • Mulches, Mats & Geotextiles
It is also advised that all construction materials and equipment be removed from sites or be properly secured. This includes all items likely to become airborne objects that may cause damage to your property or adjacent parcels.
Commissioner Jean-Pierre Oriol also reminds residents with wind turbines installed on their property to lower their towers before the impending storm and ensure that the perimeter designated as the setback from the property line is cleared of any structures or buildings that may be damaged with the potential of becoming airborne debris.
To report any areas of concern, contact the Division of Environmental Protection Earth Change Program at 774-3320 or 773-1082.

Ho there. Been a while since I have written anything. Hopyfully back to normal. Yes, Dorian is looming out there and should pass south of us not to cause any problems in St Thomas. The usual frenzy has begun on social media and I guess those suffering from PTSD from IrMaria are getting skittish. Let's see how it plays out. I for one is not skittish!

Another calm clear sunset without fear. The quiet season so far has helped us

catch up, get prepared and continue our recovery. Clear horizon and cooler
nights always make up for August heat. We have had enough rain to pressure
wash the mud smears from the deluge 3 weeks ago. The water mon is resting.

Please post on your social media ....Water Bay, St Thomas Dolphinarium Just created a (short) video showing the after-effects of the recent heavy rains over the island of St. Thomas.
Run-off from the island created bad water conditions in Water Bay.
Two days after the rains, the water in their dolphin pens still looked murky; plus as seen there's quite a large mat of Sargassum Seaweed floating in the pens as well.

I'm now calm enough to write this as the aviator made it up the steepest hill
in St Thomas against a river, waterfall geyser and downed branches to get home
before dark. My weather station says 4.63 inches have fallen in last few hours
with gusts up
to 13 mph. Temp dropped to 72 now up to 74. The mountain of dirt behind the
new retaining wall has brought rivers of mud into courtyard and the 2 loads of
gravel for driveway that was delivered last week is now part of the river.
I feel safe now , and the dogs held up well. Probably more to come. I feel
lucky,
we have a roof. So many still don't .

See the water quality in St Thomas in the captive dolphin pen on our East end.
Please BOYCOTT captive dolphin exhibits everywhere. There is no sanctuary for
dolphins trapped in polluted waters .
> As you can see from the attached pics, the weed is heavily present on the
> beach, and along the South side of the bay at the 'Resort', opposite the pens.
> Streaks of the invading weed can be seen in the waters entering the bay.
> There's a dark-brown stain in the waters that seems to pervade the pens'
> waters too....
> On the West side of the pens the brown Sargasso weed can be seen inside the
> pens... trapped against the floating barrier that's supposed to keep stuff
> out.

PLEASE ASK FOR THE PERMIT TO IMPORT CAPTIVE DOLPHINS INTO ST THOMAS BE DENIED The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is responding to your request for an extension of the public comment period and public hearing on an application submitted by the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) for the import three bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) for public display.
We have decided to extend the public comment period for an additional 30 days to provide the public an opportunity to review additional information provided by CZS. However, we determined that a public hearing is not warranted because documentation related to this MMPA permit application can be provided in writing. In order to allow for a full 30 days for additional public comment, we will accept comment through May 19, 2019, even though the FR notice indicates that the comment period ends on May 16, 2019.

We have had the coldest winter into spring that we can remember
in our 25 years here. With morning temps under 70 degrees
up til this week. The sea and pool remain very cool and the sweaters
and comforters are still in use here on the NW side of St Thomas.A strong
brief downpour woke us at day break. The veggies and herbs are loving
this chillin ting. The second planting of tomatoes has potential. So lucky.
