Good night all,

Weather forecast for today (Wednesday) said "a moderate chance for shower activity over and around the islands mainly during the morning, gradually diminishing into the afternoon and overnight".

Showers, rain and drizzle for most of the day. Night has fallen and it looks like the wet weather has let up.

A pretty wet February.

Tomorrow hopefully will be dry.

- Grey and Drizzle to Start the Week
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2020 15:39:43 +0000
Good day all,

Showers are still with us but it is slowly getting brighter. Up in the Nevis Peak foothills we have been treated to low cloud (grey-out) and drizzle.

A little on the cool side as I am having to wear a long sleeved shirt.

See attached photos re: weather conditions.

There are still plenty of showers coming in from the Atlantic. With a small island and scattered showers the impact can be hit or miss.

Later on in the week we could be looking forward to the return of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) over the Caribbean. Dryer atmosphere and dust.

All the best,

Frank Goodwill

- 14th February Lightning
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 15 Feb 2020 01:39:43 +0000
Good night all,

It's been showery over the last few days with some gusty winds. Tonight we are experiencing some thunder and lightning as a band of showers moves across the island from the south.

Having returned from a break in the UK, visiting family and friends, I have found the old weather station is giving false temperature readings. So I think it is time for an upgrade! The "weather cam" is still working, though. Even that needs a clean now and again to clear spider webs.

The January "Christmas Winds" have provided the usual crop of fallen twigs and branches to clear up.

My coconut and banana trees are enjoying the rain and flowering fruit. Mango season soon come.

Nevis Nice.

- Violent Awakening!
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>

Good morning all,

The early hours of this morning turned out to be quite lively. The heavens opened up at around 00:50 am with heavy rain, thunder and lightning. In abou 1 hour 30 minutes we had received nearly 100 mm (4 inches) of rain!

We lost Nevlec grid power in the Gingerland area just after 1 am but our locale was reconnected at about 9 am.

Bit of a surprise as looking at the Guadeloupe rain radar this storm just bubbled up out of nothing.

- Surf's Up!
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2019 22:55:26 +0000
Good evening all,

Many miles away in the Atlantic Hurricane Pablo and a very powerful extra-tropical cyclone will have a impact on the Caribbea.

It will NOT be wind and rain but large swells generated by these Low pressure systems. The main Impact will be on the north and east coast of Nevis and other islands on Monday.

A combination of waves and swells could reach 2.9 metres or 9 feet in height.

These conditions may continue during the rest of the coming week. Sea bathing and small vessal advisories will probably be  issued from Monday by the authorities.

The weather forecast for Nevis for the next few days, a weak trough is affecting the area. Due to low moisture levels the weather Sunday night will be restricted to patchy cloud and an isolated showers.  On Monday moist and unstable conditions will increase the chances of further cloud and showers.

The above are forecasts and therefore subject to change. Local authority confirmation through briefings and local media releases should be sought for confirmation.

- Nevis: All Quiet Weatherwise
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2019 15:05:37 +0000
Good day everyone,

The weather on Nevis has been pretty quiet with the odd isolated shower. Forecast for the rest of the week indicates that the presence of an upper level trough, along with available moisture and daytime heating, could result in a moderate
chance for showers across the island during the next 24 hours.

Beyond that, a light to moderate trade wind flow may transport moisture over the island  that could lead to a slight chance of brief showers.

Friday into Saturday; it is expected that a weak tropical wave will move into the area. This could lead to an increased chance of showers.

Being a small island in a big sea many shower clouds often miss us.

Attached are photos of the local Vervet Monkey troop taking a mid-day "chill out".

- Tropical Wave & Saharan Dust
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 6 Oct 2019 23:19:01 +0000
Good night everyone,

After a quiet week we had some heavy late morning showers up in the Nevis Peak foothills. This was due to the passing of a tropical wave and gave us a total rainfall on Sunday of 12.45 mm (0.5 in).

Other parts of the island had less rainfall or none at all.

Things should quieten down on Monday with Saharan Dust/dry air settling over the area. This will stiffle any significant cloud formation and showers.

Meanwhile, swells from the north may well cause hazadous marine conditions on Tuesday. A high surf advisory is expected to be issued
for coastal areas along the northern coast.

Attached a couple of afternoon photos showing overcast conditions.

Greetings All,

Just been looking round the islands around St.Kitts/Nevis and it appears Nevis has grabbed most of the rain.
Most stations reporting range from .02 - .16 inched since 12:01 am this morning.
I show a total of 1.61" and that's not including before midnight. The new day starts at Midnight as far as the weather data logger is concerned.

The skies are looking much brighter now, so should I say most has moved northward?

Good morning all,

From a very wet Nevis! We had about 65 mm (2.5 inches) of rain overnight up in the Nevis Peak foothills.we had a break from the rain first thing this morning but it has resumed again as of 10 am. Due to the inclement weather schools are closed today.

Seas are still rough with the inter-island public ferry service disrupted.

St. Kitts and Nevis is under a flash flood watch from 7:30 am to 8 pm today (Tuesday).

  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2019 23:58:10 +0000
Good night everyone,

Today has mainly been overcast but with no significant rainfall and a gentle breeze. The impact of Tropical Storm Karen has been rough seas. Sea conditions resulted in the suspension of afternoon ferry services between Charlestown, Nevis and Basseterre, St. Kitts.

A warning has also been issued to motorists regarding diving on coastal roads because of the rough sea conditions.

---------------------------------------

"Roadusers are urged to exercise extreme caution when traversing roads along the island's coastline because of high surf conditions resulting from TS Karen. The Tropical Storm is expected to continue to affect St. Kitts Nevis overnight tonight, into tomorrow. Persons  are also strongly discouraged from parking in ghauts or in close proximity to any known waterways or areas prone to flooding."

Here is another plot of path in relation to Nevis/St. Kitts. Which confirms my earlier data.

Results for Nevis (17.14N, 62.59W):
The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 19.2N, 61.5W or about 155.5 miles (250.2 km) from your location.
The estimated time of when the center of the storm will be at that location is in about 45 hours and 38 minutes from now (Friday, September 20 at 5:42PM AST).

  • Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2019 17:51:06 -0300
Greetings All,

The latest (11 am) shows TS Jerry has drifted a bit south of the predicted path from yesterday.

Latest path will put Jerry approx 148 miles NE of St.Kitt/Nevis approx. 2 days from now, that would be between Thursday evening to Friday morning.
It looks like the speed of the track will increase a bit between Thur evening & Fri morning as it moves away.
Also looks like the Bahamas will be spared this one, based on predicted path.

I still see no thread from Jerry to our area.

- Tropical Depression #10
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2019 15:41:41 +0000
The status of IN97L has now been raised to Tropical Depression #10. The forecast indicates development to a hurricane as it passes just (hopefully) to the north of us. Still worth watching though as a slight change in direction could make it worse or a lot better for us.

Almost a perfect storm as sea temperatures are warm, little wind shear and a small area of dry air (Saharan Dust) to pass through.

As the NHC says:
INTERESTS IN THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM.
Beyond that the weather in Nevis is hazy sunshine and breezy.

- Showery Day
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2019 02:56:54 +0000
Good evening all,

As the predicted tropical wave passed us in Nevis we had a showery morning. This was followed by some hazy sunshine in the afternoon and a short sharp thunderstorm in the evening.

This gave us up in the Nevis Peak foothills 17.8 mm (0.7 in) of rainfall.

NEVLEC didn't do so well today with the power grid going off in the southern part of thr for a couple of hours in the afternoon. We had a 15 minute outage again when the thunderstorm arrived.. island life I'm afraid.

The weather forecast looks to be calm for the next 3-4 days. A high pressure ridge will be firmly in place across the area. This will maintain
a generally stable atmosphere across the area over the next few days. A moderate to fresh trade wind flow associated with this ridge could give a chance for brief passing showers over during the next 3-4 days.

Beyond that, the mid Atlantic disturbance IN97L is being watched for development into a tropical cyclone. The forecast track is still just to the north of us and staying out in the Atlantic.

Frank Goodwill

- Tropical Waves
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2019 22:41:56 +0000
Good day all,

Finally a "strong* tropical wave caught up with us in Nevis. Through the early hours into Sunday morning we had thunderstorms and showers.

This resulted in 40.9 mm (1.6 inches) of rain up in the Nevis Peak foothills. The rest of Sunday was overcast but on the upside a lot cooler. We were having regular temperatures of 30C (feels like 35C) even up in our cooler part of the island recently. This was manly due to a lack of trade wind breeze.

One good thing was the local NEVLEC electricity grid stayed online despite the lightning.

The forecast says a further tropical wave will move across the area tomorrow Monday causing unsettled weather conditions. Cloudy spells with showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms could accompany this tropical wave.

Looking to the east out in the Atlantic IN97L looks a good prospect for developing into something more serious. It is forecast to move north of us but worth watching as things change and the strength is unknown at this stage.

On a lighter note - passing by a neighbour's house, they had left their front gate open. Of course they were "flash mobbed" by a herd of goats. Some extra pruning of plants took place.

"I'll only be half an hour" - the goats are always watching!

- Hot!
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 8 Sep 2019 00:16:06 +0000
Good evening all,

On Friday showers delivered 23.6 mm (about 1 inch) of rain up in the Nevis Peak foothils. Driving down into Charlestown revealed that it was bone dry. Nevis, a 36 square mile island with micro climates! This was all due to the tail of a passing Tropical Wave.

Saturday was hot! Local temperature was 28C but with a "feels like" reading of 35C. Rumbles of thunder, but no rain early evening. Light breeze blowing.

The forecast for the next few days indicates average to low humidity levels resulting in, at most, a moderate chance of showers. However, there is a slight chance of thunderstorms during the day, due to sea breeze convergence resulting from light winds.

A low pressure to the North East of us is back on the US National Hurricane Center map again. Development if any is s fair way off. The NHC have it heading towards the Bahamas though. Things can change but not a good outlook after Hurricane Dorian

To the east we have IN94L slowly moving west towards the islands. It is plowing its way through dry air at the moment. The NHC predict the chances of development over the next 5 days at 40%. This forecast has decreased from 70% a few days ago. Early days yet as there is a lack of Saharan Dust mid-Atlantic to the islands and warm Sea Surface Temperatures. One watch.

Attached a few photos of views and the local Red Cross appeal for the Bahamas for anyone living on island and is interested.

Good evening everyone,

Well between 3pm and 5pm we received 40.4 (1.6 inches) of rain up in the Nevis Peak foothills. After the rain stopped the wind died down. Looking at the Guadelope rain radar it looked as if the rain patch approaching us broke up after the initial rain band.

The 7:15 pm view of the radar, the islands look to be in a fairly clear corridor, between rain events moving southeast to northwest.

Good afternoon all,

It became overcast here in Nevis from about 9 am. We had a shower from about 9.50 am that gave us 6.6 mm (0.25 inches) of rain.

At the moment (1:20 pm) I am hearing some rumbles of thunder and it is just starting to rain.

The wind has picked up a bit during the day.

A high of 14.5 mph with a wind gust high of 23 mph.

Looking at the Guadeloupe Rain Radar it looks as if we will get a fair bit of wet stuff a little later this afternoon.

I am located about 900 feet up the south side of Nevis Peak so things can be a little different elsewhere on the island.

- Tropical Storm Dorian
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2019 01:26:25 +0000
Good evening everyone,

Well it has been a sunny and hot Sunday, though the sunshine has been hazy. Temperatures up in cooler foothills of Nevis Peak got up to 30C (86F) at about 3pm. It is forecast to be hotter on Monday. We are usually 3C or 4C cooler up here than down at sea level.

TS Dorian has continued its journey in a more westerly direction and a little slower than originally forecast. It will therefore pass us here in Nevis further to the south and a little later. It also seems to be  ingesting dry air from its surroundings and that is inhibiting development into a hurricane. Some good news.

The weather forecast for St. Kitts and Nevis is that the outer rain bands associated with TS Dorian, will generate unstable conditions across the area, beginning late Tuesday and continuing into Thursday. Therefore the majority of any rainfall will be on Wednesday. How much depends on any further changes to the track of the storm. Otherwise, the sub-tropical high pressure system will keep conditions more on the settled side.

Pictures attached show hazy sunshine today, as dry air and dust from the Saharan Air Layer make their presence felt.

  • Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2019 17:04:06 +0000
Good day all,

As usual for this time of year the tropical wave conveyor belt continues to operate from West Africa to the Caribbean. Another wave has passed giving us some showers. Another tropical wave will move into the area on Saturday resulting in a high chance of showers. During Thursday and Friday the chances of
showers will remain low under partly cloudy skies. An easterly to east-southeast, gentle to moderate windflow will prevail. Seas will remain tranquil for marine activities.

Three photos attached showing the changeable weather on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Some action "up north" including the 3rd named storm of the season "Chantal", now a tropical depression. For us though all remains quiet at the moment.

Greeting All,

If you think it's been an unusually quiet hurricane season, you're right: The last time we've gone from July 15 through Aug. 19 with no named storms in the Atlantic was 1982, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach.
Could this be the calm before the storm?
History says yes: Over the years, the period from Aug. 20 through Sept. 11 marks the sharpest increase in named tropical systems in the Atlantic, AccuWeather said.
However, the latest hurricane forecast released Monday shows the rest of August appears to favor a quiet pattern for tropical storm and hurricane development in the Atlantic Basin, according to Colorado State.
The Atlantic Basin includes the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
The cause of the calm season so far is a combination of strong wind shear and dry, dusty air.
"Wind shear has been quite extensive across the Atlantic Basin the past few weeks and is, in part, one of the reasons why we have not seen any tropical storm development across the Atlantic Basin since mid-July with Barry," according to AccuWeather hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski.
Wind shear – strong winds at higher levels of the atmosphere – can tear apart developing storms. "Long-range forecasts show less extensive shear but still enough to cause problems with westward-moving tropical waves, or disturbances, during the next week or so," Kottlowski said.
Extensive areas of dry air and dust from Africa have also kept a lid on shower and thunderstorm formation in the Atlantic, AccuWeather said.
This hasn't been the case in the Pacific Ocean, however, where four hurricanes have already formed. And, the National Hurricane Center is giving a pair of Pacific weather systems a good chance of becoming tropical storms within the next five days, one of which is dumping heavy rain across portions of Guatemala and Mexico this week.
Pacific hurricanes seldom have a direct impact on the mainland U.S.
The only hurricane to form this year in the Atlantic was Barry, which hit Louisiana in July. Seeing only one hurricane so far isn't unusual: Klotzbach noted that "it's pretty common to have only had one hurricane this late in the season. It happens about half of the time.
"It's actually not that uncommon to have had no hurricanes through Aug. 19 – the most recent time that this occurred was in 2015," he said.
Looking into September, however, "conditions are expected to become not only much more conducive for tropical storm formation but may also lead to multiple occasions with more than one named system spinning in the Atlantic Basin at the same time, as well as a late and strong finish to the season," Kottlowski warned.
Overall, five to nine hurricanes are expected to form in the Atlantic Basin this year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a forecast released earlier in August.
The months of September and October have notoriously brought some of the most powerful and damaging hurricanes to the United States, AccuWeather said. For example, in September 2018, Hurricane Florence killed 53 people and caused $24 billion in damage. And one month later, Hurricane Michael killed 49 and resulted in $25 billion in damage.

Good day all,

A weak tropical wave has passed us by and gave us some showers overnight for the last couple of days. It has now been replaced by a Saharan Air Layer plume that is giving us a dry and dusty atmosphere. So things are looking hazy. High pressure will dominate for the next couple of days, until the next tropical wave moves into the area by late Saturday into Sunday.

All remains quiet in the Gulf and Atlantic, as far as tropical disturbances are concerned.

Attached a couple of hazy views from today.

Good night all,

We had a couple of showers yesterday (Thursday) as a tropical wave left the area. It gave us 7.6 mm (0.3 inches) of rain in total. Today (Friday) was dry and mainly cloudy.

The forecast says that a tropical wave will be moving through the area Sunday into Monday. Low moisture levels will act to restrict significant shower activity. Partly cloudy conditions are expected to prevail for most of the period with at most a moderate chance of showers.

As it has been a little damp nature responds. See attached pictures of toadstools that have spouted due to the showery weather.

All still quiet in the Atlantic at the moment. We have had two named storms so far. It will be interesting to see how things develop as we move towards Seotember, with the NOAA's "above average season" forecast with 10-17 named storms .

- NOAA Updated 2019 Hurricane Season Forecast
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 8 Aug 2019 16:16:52 +0000
Good day,

The NOAA have issued their August update for the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

....more favourable for above-normal hurricane activity.....

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center located in College Park, Md., has issued its updated outlook for the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. NOAA forecasters monitoring oceanic and atmospheric patterns say conditions are now more favorable for above-normal hurricane activity since El Nino has now ended. The likelihood of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season is now to 45% (up from 30% from the outlook issued in May).

The number of predicted storms is also greater with NOAA now expecting 10-17 named storms (winds of 39 mph or greater), of which 5-9 will become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or greater), including 2-4 major hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or greater). This updated outlook is for the entire six-month hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30.

Good evening everyone,

The tropical wave conveyor belt continues across the Atlantic towards us.

Yesterday (Tuesday) delivered some wet weather in the morning. Up in the Nevis Peak foothills we received 14.5mm (over half-an-inch) of rain.

Today the morning started of bright but as another tropical wave passed us by, we had rumbles of thunder and a little sprinkle of rain.
The rain showers that were around missed us.

The future forecast is that after the passage ofthr latest tropical wave s over on Thursday, the atmosphere will gradually return to a relatively stable conditions on Friday. On Sunday, a mid to upper trough in the vicinity will increase the chance of passing showers over the islands.

Also noticeable is the reduction of Saharan dust/Saharan Air Layer over the area of the islands.

Pictures attached are from this evening (Wednesday).

Latest image from NOAA...........

You can't see it but looking at the GOES16 animated images there is a CCW motion barely visible but its there.
Prediction is as it moves into the Caribbean Sea upper level winds are expected to prevent further development.
The Leewards will be on the very northern edges of this wave. So expect more showers in the next few days.
A good thing seeing the news print is all about the drought we've been in since back in February.

Good evening all,

We have just said goodbye to a weak tropical wave. Up in the Nevis Peak foothills we received 20.6mm (about 0.8 inches) of rain earlier today. Low cloud/mist/drizzle this morning but it brightened up later.

See attached photos.

IN96L disturbance about 700 miles to the east of us is still slow to develop due to dry air. If it does develop into something then adverse upper winds will keep a lid on it.

Looking at the NHC report it does say "A large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms....". I would still think that some gusty winds and rain are heading our way anyhow. Just have to keep an eye on the forecast.

- Weak Tropical Wave Passing
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2019 22:17:51 +0000
Good afternoon everyone,

Another weak tropical wave is passing over us this afternoon. So far it has given us some gusty winds and some showers/light rain.

Total rain so far today up in the Nevis Peak foothills is 3.6 mm (about 0.14 inches).

Please see following for today from the St. Kitts Met Office, it also includes an update on IN96L to the east of us.

Attached a couple of pictures for today of the view in my part of Nevis.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

WEATHER UPDATE FROM ST. KITTS MET OFFICE

The weather conditions that we are currently experiencing (between 2:30pm and 4:00pm) today (Friday 2nd August 2019) is associated with a tropical wave that is moving through the island chain as mentioned in the morning forecast from today. Moderate showers and moderate thunderstorms are possible today and accompanied with some gusty winds especially in moderate to heavy showers. These conditions are expected to gradually improve overnight into tomorrow.

We at the St. Kitts Met Services are still closely monitoring the broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave in the mid Atlantic. This wave continues to struggle against some unfavorable environmental conditions but is holding on slightly. As such we will continue to closely monitor this separate weather system (tropical wave) as it approaches the island chain as it is expected to be in the vicinity of the islands by early next week. There is a possibility that it can develop into a Tropical Depression before reaching the islands but conditions are forecast to be unfavorable thereafter.

At this moment we are uncertain as to the exact areas that may be impacted and if there will be any impacts to us here in St. Kitts and Nevis when it passes. We will continue to monitor and provide daily updates until the potential threat has diminished.

Elmo Burke,MSc.

Greetings All,

So the reason for all this cloudy, hazy, spotty showers is a tropical wave over Hispaniola & Puerto Rico of which parts linger about the Northern Leewards.
Predicted to move NW at 10 MPH.

The second wave is expected to move into the Lesser Antilles over the weekend with good possibility of becoming a tropical depression.

- August Soon - Things Are Starting To Liven Up!
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 30 Jul 2019 15:14:19 +0000
Good morning everyone,

Late Sunday afternoon into the evening gave us 25.4 mm  (about an inch) of rain in a short period of time. Also measured a gust of wind at 49 kph (about 30 mph).

The Culturama Games at the Mondo Athletics Track, Long Point on Sunday had to be abandoned, about a quarter of the way through, due to the weather.  Strong winds, heavy rain, thunder and lightning caused awnings/tents to collapse and electrical equipment to be inundated with water. Athletes, officials and spectators had to run for cover. Happily no one was injured.

Monday we had some rumbles of thunder but no rain.

Today, Tuesday there is still a chance of showers as the moisture trail of IN95L passes us. At the moment it is dry and mainly cloudy.

Looking ahead the NHC is monitoring a tropical wave that has left the West African coast.

It is ploughing through dry air westwards at 15 to 20 mph.  Upper-level winds could become more conducive for development by the weekend while the wave continues westward across the central Atlantic.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent.

Early days yet, but worth watching.

  • Date: Sun, 28 Jul 2019 20:23:02 +0000
Good day everyone,

Not a sunny Sunday here in Nevis. A passing tropical wave is giving us some cloudy weather. To the south of us Islands are being effected by thunderstorms and rain.

The NHC is monitoring this wave as a "disturbance" for possible further development. It is expected to move west-northwestward to northwestward across the north-central Caribbean Sea during the next few days. The forecast is that it will produce locally heavy rainfall and possibly some flooding across Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. Little development of the disturbance is expected due to interaction with land.  However, the system is forecast to emerge over the Straits of Florida by the end of the week where environmental conditions could be a little more conducive for development to occur.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent.

The present forecast for Nevis is that we may see an increase in showers from Sunday night through to Tuesday.

A couple of photos of the clouds today. Also attached a graphic showing the thunderstorm activity to the south of us.

- Still Pretty Dry
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2019 01:47:59 +0000
Good evening all,

Majority of the showers seem to be passing to the south of us this afternoon - between Guadeloupe and Martineque. We did manage to get 3mm (about a 10th of an inch) of rainfall on Sunday up in the Nevis Peak foothills. Probably double that on the west side of the island

The presence of three tropical waves could trigger some showers across the area between Tuesday and Friday this week. A higher chance of showers is expected late Wednesday into early Thursday. Weak instability and low moisture
levels could give at most a moderate chance of showers on Tuesday and Friday.

All is quiet in the Atlantic but as we get into August/September things could liven up.

Meanwhile the US National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Depression Three, located near the northwestern Bahamas. Tropical cyclone formation is not expected with this disturbance during the next 5 days. Hopefully this will mostly be a rainfall event. No impact on us in the North-East Caribbean.

Attached a couple of evening shots showing cloud but no rain. Also a bright Monday view.

- In The Cycle. Dry/Weak Tropical Wave
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2019 22:33:07 +0000
Good evening all,

Well we have had a couple of weak tropical waves pass us by this week. The rain total up in the Nevis Peak foothills has measured 3mm (about 0.1 inch). The west side of the island has managed about 6mm (about 0.2 inches). So not a lot really to relieve the dry period we have been experiencing.

Most of the rain action has been across Trinidad and the Windward Islands.

Weatherwise we are back to dry and stable air along with high pressure restricting shower activity. This is forecast to continue to be the status quo until Sunday across the island. Another weak tropical wave will move across the area on Monday. This will increase the chance of showers through to Tuesday.

- A Little Saturday Rain
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2019 11:44:53 +0000
Good morning,

Saturday gave us some afternoon showers up in the Nevis Peak foothillss. This resulted in 14.22 mm (0.56 inches) of rainfall.

Looking at my soil moisture sensors these small amounts of shower rain are not really soaking into the ground.

As another Saharan Dust plume enters the area, the associated dry and dusty air will inhibit shower activity for the next few days, The chance of showers will be, at most, moderate especially on Tuesday when the next tropical wave is due to pass over the area.

Meanwhile back out in the Atlantic, disturbance 93L has secumbed to dry air as forecast by the NHC. It no longer appears on their 2/5 day forecast. The tropical wave may still deliver some rain to the Windward Islands

- In the Atlantic - A Little Reminder.
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2019 15:23:58 +0000

Good day all,

With a weak tropical wave traversing the area an  increase in cloudy spells is forecast. Most of the shower/rain activity is further south at the moment. An increase in moisture may trigger some showers in the area on Saturday. From Sunday high pressure will again dominate and coupled with low moisture levels it will keep the chance of showers low.

Meanwhile out in the Atlantic.

A tropical wave with an associated low pressure area is located about 1000 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. It continues to produce a small area of showers and thunderstorms. Some development of the wave is possible during the next day or so while it moves westward at 15 to 20 mph. Environmental conditions are expected to become unfavorable for development by this Sunday.

One to keep an eye on but dry air conditions will probably subdue development. At present the NHC give this disturbance a 20% chance of development in both 2 and 5 day forecasts.

I timely reminder as we move closer to the peak of the hurricane season (September/October).

  • Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2019 13:51:50 +0000
Good morning all,

The passing of the weak tropical wave on Monday gave us a total rainfall of 5.6 mm (0.22 inches) up in the Nevis Peak foothills.

The tropical wave has also pulled in another plume of Saharan Dust (dry air) behind it today.

So we are back to a ridge of high pressure dominating weather conditions for the next couple of days. No signifcant rainfall activity is expected, but a moderate windflow will transport some low cloud over the island which could generate brief passing showers.

On Friday, another weak tropical wave is forecast to pass over the area. This again could generate some brief showers.

- Few Showers
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 6 Jul 2019 03:03:35 +0000
Good night all,

The weak tropical wave that passed over us on Thursday and Friday gave us a few rain showers up in the Nevis Peak foothills.

Thursday 6.6 mm (0.26 in)
Friday: 3.8 mm (0.15 in)

For the next few days the weather forecast is as follows:

High pressure with dry and stable air will continue to restrict shower activity. On Monday another tropical wave is due to pass over the immediate area and will increase the chance of showers.

Winds will blow mainly out of the East and East-southeast with speeds not exceeding 31 km/h
(17 knots). Seas will be calm for at least the next four days with wave heights not exceeding 2.1 metres (7 feet).

So we continue to receive minimal rainfall. An interview by a local radio station WINNFM with St. Kitts Senior Meteologist Mr Elmo Burke.

St Kitts and Nevis (WINN):
2nd July 2019

Senior Meteorological Officer at St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority while speaking with WINN FM says the federation has experienced relatively dry conditions, cautioning persons that there would be periods of heavy rainfall.

No major relief on the way from the extremely hot conditions affecting St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology said that the drought-like condition is expected to continue through July – September in the Lesser Antilles.

The Meteorological officer pointed to the excessive Saharan dust which is creating the dry condition coupled with the sinking motion from the high pressure systems in the area.

He noted that many of the islands down south have conditions that are more conducive for rainfall from the high pressure system.

With the El Nino conditions affecting the most of the region, the meteorologist says that this is preventing the formation of  hurricanes.

However, he is still warning persons to still be prepared.

The hot weather is not only affecting St. Kitts and Nevis. Just recently Jamaica broke its all time hottest day record 33 degrees Celsius, while a number of other islands are grappling with water problems. Burke urged all to stay hydrated.

Greetings All,

Attached weather date from station formatted for NOAA, for those interested.

This part of the Caribbean is in a big drought condition. Very little rain falls, June exceptionally dry.
Nevis should be around 25" total rain fall mid year, we are well below that sum.

With below normal storm prediction will that mean less waves moving off Africa this summer?
We need the waves marching across the Atlantic without the hurricanes forming.

- Cloudy, Hazy, Little Rain
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2019 00:14:37 +0000
Good evening everyone,

A dry and stable airflow continues to linger over the area and will do so for a couple days. This will keep shower activity very low even with cloudy conditions we are experiencing. The weather will remain fair with hazy conditions due tha Saharan Air Layer and it's associated dust. There is a chance of an isolated shower during the early morning.

For the Leeward Islands things remaining mainly dry with most of the rain falling over Trinidad and Tobago and the Windward Islands.

One good thing is the mangoes keep coming.

For the Nevis Mango Festival see details via the  following link:

A couple of pictures attached taken at dusk showing cloudy conditions.

- Passing Weak Tropical Wave
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2019 03:49:39 +0000
Good night all,

The passing of a weak tropical wave brought increased cloud and a couple of passing showers. Most of the rain/showers passed to the North East of Nevis. Up in the foothills of Nevis Peak we measured 2.3mm (just under a tenth of an inch) if rain today. I had to water my sweet potato plants as the soil was dry. Further isolated showers are forecast for the next 24 hours.

Out in the Atlantic the "Tropical Wave conveyor belt" continues to roll along. The waves were moving across the southern islands, this now seems to have changed as they look to be passing further north.

Early days in the season but things are slowly cranking up.

A couple of photo views attached.

Frank Goodwill

- Sun, Cloud and Breeze
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2019 18:21:17 +0000
Good day everyone,

A relatively strong high pressure system is generating moderate to fresh trade winds over the island. This is set to continue for the next few days with the wind flow bringing over shallow pockets of moisture. This has led to some isolated brief showers, especially during the early hours of the morning.

Mango season is in full swing. Can't eat them all so many have been "processed" and are filling the freezer up

- Many years weather data
  • By "Harry W. Hallstrom" <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 9 Jun 2019 12:41:55 -0300
Greetings All,

I updated my yearly/monthly rain data records and notice a very marked decline in rain fall from 2015 to present.
Only exception is 2017 when we got deluged with 17+ inches of rain from hurricane Maria.
Take that away and 2017 is following same pattern.

What does it all mean? Global warming? World wide weather changes? Just a cycle?
Can't tell you what it means. I'm just looking at data and wondering???

......and on another note
The temperatures are definitely much warmer and longer duration.
Living here since 2001 there have been sooo many days well above 90 degrees + from May-Sept.
Many years ago it would be the except, rather than the rule, to hit a 90 deg day in July-August-September.

Harry

- Mainly Dry and Dusty.
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 7 Jun 2019 16:15:05 +0000
Good day everyone,

A few isolated showers about but a ridge of high pressure is maintaining realatively dry and stable conditions. There is a moderate trade wind flow that may transport some cloud and brief passing showers, mainly during the early morning period.

The Saharan Air Layer will be bringing in hazy/dusty conditions. It is set to reduce air quality across the area within the next 24 hours and continue into next week

  • Date: Sun, 2 Jun 2019 07:40:43 -0300
Greetings All,

Attached station data for month of May.

In the last two days I record almost 1" of rain from the squally disturbance which passed over the area.
For several days all we've seen is cloud cover with very little water falling from them until Fri-Sat.
This will help with the drought conditions in the area.

Harry

- Not so wet!
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 2 Jun 2019 00:14:54 +0000
Good day,

The forecast for today (Saturday) predicted showers with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. We ended up with an overcast/cloudy day with a couple of light early morning showers.

The rain seems to have moved around Nevis. The Guadeloupe radar showed rainfall to the Northeast and South of us. Always happens, small island in a big sea.

Attached is a picture showing St. Kitts and Nevis marked in orange left out of the action.

Today is the 1st June and therefore the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane season. A lot of storm number predictions but of course they do not say where they will track. It only takes one major hurricane hitting your island to spoil your year. Be aware and prepare!

Frank

Good day everyone,

It looks as if the dry season has come to an end. After some cloudy days with occasional drizzle on Wednesday and Thursday, today, Friday, the skies have finally opened and rain is falling.

The forecast for Nevis reports that a developing low pressure will increase unsettled weather. Cloudy and overcast conditions will prevail giving a moderate chance of showers. Thunderstorms are expected on Saturday and Sunday  From Monday the weather is forecast to become drier.

Possible rainfall total for Friday to Sunday is 25mm to 100mm (1 to 4 inches), with higher local totals.

There is a concern for flash flooding in Saturday and Sunday.

Up in the Nevis Peak foothills we are running at 45mm (1.7 inches) or rain in the last 15 hours.

Keep safe,

- Showers on Saturday?
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 23 May 2019 20:50:06 +0000
Good day everyone,

The cloudy weather has continued, but we have had a couple of light showers today, giving 2mm of rain so far.

The forecast expects a low level trough to bring some cloud and showers on Saturday across Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis. Further showery weather may occur on Monday as a second trough passed across the islands. Overall partly cloudy skies with possible isolated showers prevails.

A little to early to give up on the rain dance I think! 😀

The forecast for the next few day continues in much the same vain:

"A weak trough will move across the area Thursday night however, low moisture levels will restrict any significant shower activity. Otherwise mostly dry weather will prevail as high pressure dominates, keeping the atmosphere generally stable."

Photos attached viewing the four points of the compass's: North - Nevis Peak shrouded in cloud. East - Towards Zetlands more cloud. South - Saddle Hill sunny. West - Caribbean Sea and blue skies.

...... clouds but no rain.

Greetings All,

From the look of other postings the Caribbean Leeward Islands have been in drought conditions since start of Feb.
Looking at Nevis rain totals for Feb: 1.5" Mar: 0.90" and Apr: 0.64"

The weather pattern across the Atlantic & the Bermuda High are keeping us in the sun.
I keep looking to the East for maybe a hint of a passing shower, easy to see them out to my West showering onto the Caribbean Sea. 😕

Harry
