See why we are getting such strong winds and swell from the North..WOW.
Windy and wild here. Watched a tiny dinghy towing a big sailboat West with
just foresail in the choppy Atlantic at sunset last night. Looked
really rough out there . We live at 650 ft up the hill and can hear the
sea pounding. Losing fronds from the palm trees all around. 🥶 Chilly.

Yes, it must be a polar front as described by forecasting. It was so cold
and damp last night ,teeth were chattering. Isabel in St Croix had it
right;a fireplace was a fine thought. We are so over saturated ( I know
I keep mentioning that) ; the rain continued over night and the run off
was so loud.
We are off the grid with a broken generator. The learning curve continues…
how conservative with power can we be ?
As we wait for Mother Nature and King Solar to do their thing.
The new generator, soon come. Not soon enough.
The clear horizon is a gift for sailors and pilots.
Pay ATTENTION. We are looking at more days of rain.

Forecasts vs. Common Sense
Fiona was forecasted to be a hundred miles from us at center, as a
Tropical Storm. What we experienced was different. With a slow
moving backlash that brought more rain than Mother Earth can handle.
When Fiona did not make the forecasted turn North in the Mona
Passage many folks were caught off guard.
Study the forecasted tracks of course, but plan on preparing for worse
every time. Use your common sense. It is not difficult to over prepare.
It is very difficult to not be prepared. Lack of preparation can create
unnecessary harm. If a TS is forecasted with 100 miles,
go ahead and prep for Cat 1. You will be better prepared for the next storm.
Look East, here comes more. We have to remember that
Storm Season Is not over until at least November 30.

We live completely off grid. No connection to power company since 2015
rainstorm in February that toppled our weather head connecting us to WAPA,
i,e. water and power authority. We collect power when the sun is shining …
( not really since last Thursday) store energy in battery bank for overnight.
This Briggs and Stratton 11k generator crapped out on us last night.
With fresh oil change last week and running like a top all thru Fiona,
we were a little shocked when our back up quit. The huge advantage to
being married to an aircraft mechanic for me is obvious. What a hassle
for him. We will work it out.
WE ARE SO LUCKY, to have sunshine today, no damage , and our island
intact. Thanking our lucky stars.
We know support is being collected all over the Caribbean to help
those in need.
Please donate to this StormCarib and World Central Kitchen if you can.
Let us know how you are doing.
I have a friend that has 3 generators ready to go . She is really smart.

Looks like Fiona has a buddy serving appetizers. Heat Index is 94,
so we won’t get chilled getting ready. Where it says Virgin
Islands on this map is St Croix, St Thomas is to the left of the
words British Virgin Island. As you can see we are all the
same archipelago. Then you see Culebra and Vieques to the
West of St Thomas. We hope to hear from everyone in our
Virgin Islands group over the next few days. Let us know what
you observe.
We live at 650 ft above sea level on the NW side of St Thomas
facing the Atlantic. We normally don’t hear waves. We have
been hearing the surf for the last 2 days. There are small white
caps now. The tops of trees have a little Christmas wind going.
We all know what to do.
Today is the anniversary of Hurricane Marilyn 1995. She was about
a week after Luis. They were bad storms in so many ways.
In mid September expect anything to happen and please be
ready.
To the MORON in the kayak that went out in Earl waves to
“ surf” then had to be rescued, hoping you gave a hefty thank
you to the first responders that saved you.

Today was a calm, rainy, hot humid gift….compared to 5 yrs ago today.
The most terrifying day of my life was Sept 6 2017 and I will never ever
forget. I hope my inner consciousness recovers someday from the gripping
fear and anxiety that manifested that day.
We continue to rebuild, keep moving, keep clearing our heads and
our surroundings. There is no finish line . Just living up. Trying
to move forward. Keeping tabs on neighbors and friends.
It is not the material world that brings joy, it is the rising up
of our community against devastating odds that does.
We are the Caribbean community.
Ah we.

Last night’s sunset. Off the charts. Our road was blocked by downed
utility pole. It was only the sound of generators last night. Traffic finally
got thru one lane a few hrs later. Moisture is the word. The window
screens are dripping. Pool is topped. Cistern is almost full. And we
are looking for sunshine. Our off grid system much prefers solar power
over generator power. The Emerald Isle is back.
We are so lucky 🍀.

We are stuck. Lots of rain. New construction. On a holiday.

Last night was wild here on the NW side of St Thomas . After
dinner we were on the deck watching Earl wobble, and moan. He was
lighting up the sky with mystery green tint and then his mood
darkened. On and off grid users were grossly
disappointed in their power systems in the last 24 hrs.
We had a 4.4 earthquake early in the day and that always
seems to knock our inverter silly.
Earl kicked us up and down and around with too much lightening and
thunder for hours last night. The 70 lb panting Shepherd on my lap
was broadcasting anxiety to match the flashes right over our heads.
We had lots of rain and were chanting any mantra to keep
the wind down. Most of all we were having flashbacks from Irma and Maria.
Memories seem stronger than reality.
We got lucky this time.
To any living soul near Earl right now, beware, he is not done.
Fair warning……continue to be ready for what comes next.
Sleep finally came around 4 am. Just heard more thunder now.

The aviator in the house had to run to airport this morning and took this
picture
of Brewers Bay on South side of St Thomas. Yesterday I did Tai chi /yoga in
this water when it was super warm and sea was flat.Note, all the boats left.
One of the pilot friends doing multiple runs from St Croix to St Thomas
this morning, flew back from St Croix via Tortola BVI to find a clear
alley of sky to get back into St Thomas. Weird route for sure.

Sahara dust moved in today…creating grey skies, no breeze, hot ,hot, hot.
Heat index was 104 F around 2 pm today. We will take the dust. Anything
that will tamp down storms. We noticed at beach yoga today that there
we’re only 3 laughing seagulls. Last Thursday there were over 30 . Do
they know something we don’t know?

To Jurgen in Barbados,
If you saw the entire sky light up with no thunder I would suggest
that it is called “ heat lightening” or “ sheet lightening “
maybe not…but as a child in
Nebraska USA when the temperature was close to 100 we would
see huge sheets of lightening with no thunder in the hottest dog
days of summer. I believe this is the hottest summer ever in the
29 years I have lived in St Thomas. I see lightening coming out
of nowhere here more often with no thunder or rain.
The heat index is moving close to 110 F in the mid afternoons here.
Time to quit looking at the heat index .
There is allot of power going on with Mother Nature’s forces.
Stay prepared.
Hot, sweaty, balmy, tropical, whatever you want to call hot, hot, hot.
And no air conditioning in this house.
Whew
Jane , in St Thomas

See how flat the sea is. Our breezes are sciroccos now. Yesterday the heat
index around 3 pm showed 112 F degrees. Today 105 F . This is new. We have been
here
29 summers and I have bragged how much cooler our summers are here than my
home state of Nebraska . We do cool down every night. It would be so difficult
if it did
not cool down. Most of us Virgin Islanders don’t have air conditioning due to the
high cost of electricity. We get by with fans. Tropical we are.

Clear horizon shows the breakup of Sahara dust. Blue clear skies are
a welcome change. This is truly the only time of year when we welcome
Sahara dust to tap down storms. Will our protective layer come back ?
All eyes East to Africa. We hope for a gentler next 6 weeks . The

Fingers crossed, the drought seems to be breaking. We’ve had enough
rain to fill the auxiliary cistern from shower stall gutters.
Downloading water into main cistern is a joy.
All the plants have perked up and the hills are no longer
crunchy brown. We are expecting more rain in a wave overnight. We are
cooler than most friends stateside. We are the lucky ones.

Our heat index is 96 degrees right now. And most of us don’t
have air conditioning. The bush and trees are burning up.
The hillsides are brown . We have not had to buy water for our cistern
for 2 yrs and 2 months. Today we did. The spits and spurts of rain in last
week would never had been enough. Our Island guests can’t imagine
how we cringe when water is wasted. We all need to live like sailors
12 months a year.
It should rain now. We hope.
Do you remember the summer of drought in 1995?
Then Hurricane Marilyn came by in September .
We must learn from the past and prepare for the NOW.

starfruit will be so happy. We are looking forward to a day of passing
showers. We have wind in small gusts, then quiet. Our seasonal memories

We are super super dry. Last measurable rain was May 23. Every drop
is collected from our roof top. The last time we bought water was May 2020.
We measure the cistern level about every 3 days. The pool is down and
we will have to use the pool cistern for a little top off tomorrow and get some
moisture to the pineapple plants. We dumped a few potted plants today, just not
worth the water. We keep seeing some teasing rain forecasts for next week
after next week. Then ten drops will blow by. The last time we saw this
kind of drought was the month before Hurricane Marilyn Sept 1995.
Let's do a Caribbean rain dance and thank our lucky stars we live
here . We will call the water truck, soon come.
Don't miss the big moon Tuesday.

Good Monday Morning,
We are doing a rain dance and GRATEFUL for our first good rain
in a quite a while this morning. The wine bucket rain gauge shows
1 & 1/2 inches, you can literally watch the hillside green up.
Yippee!!!!
The tomatoes and cucumbers say Gracias.
Meanwhile, I am recovering from a 2 week rough stint with Covid. Because
I have an underlying long term illness my doctors deemed me medically
ineligible for vaccination. I all want is to be vaccinated. Like walking
thru a mine field, being masked and careful all the time, Covid sought
me out and pounced. I was very ill with newest variant, among the
thousands that have posted positive since our Carnival wound down
a few weeks ago. I did not go to Carnival this year.I hated to miss it.
The good news is for the vaccinated and boosted. My husband and
close friends all tested negative throughout my illness.
LIKE SHUTTERS DURING A HURRICANE, VACCINES WILL PROTECT YOU.
Would you ever think about not being prepared for a storm coming?
Then why not stay prepared for more Covid to come, and it will... by....
putting some shutters around your body by being vaccinated. Please
protect folks like me in your family and on your island by being vaccinated.
It only makes sense and is well proven.
We are thrilled for the rain . Hoping for more, soon come.
Let's take those steps to get ready for storm season.
