- Update Cayman Islands 26 September 2022 Hurricane Ian

Hi everyone, the all clear has been issued for our Islands, but we will continue having gusty weather, rough seas and rain for the next 48 to 72 hours with rough seas especially along our South and West coast. There is some flooding in some areas that are prone to flooding. No details re damages yet. Other videos too large to upload. We remain thankful for safe passage through Ian. Thanks to my friend Gina for some of the video footage, the one of the back garden is at my home taken by me. Blessings Alicia(Jen)

- "All Clear"
  • By Malcolm Saunders <malcolmgeorge at mac.com>
  • Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2022 16:39:10 -0500
The Premier of the Cayman Islands gave the most welcome ‘All Clear’ message at
15:00 this afternoon. This prompted local dog owners to take advantage of their
freedom to roam with their canine companions. H.M.S. Minerva has arrived to
offer assistance in clear-up and our own Cayman Regiment will be putting in
lots of shifts. School halls have been hurricane shelters so some schools are
not going to be able to re-open tomorrow

My own barometric pressure measurements have been a bit baffling. They have
hovered around 1000.6 before dropping to 1000.3, rising to 1000.7. Maybe it’s
because the hurricane is intensifying, it is now a Cat 2 storm :(

Occasional showers and gusts of wind are less frequent now.

The Governor acknowledged that many folk ‘over prepared’. We probably fall into
that category but better safe than sorry.

That’s all folks… over and out… stay safe!

- Cayman Islands update 2.46pm 26 Sept 2022
  • By Alicia Dixon <JennyBaps1958 at live.com>

Good afternoon everyone,  Hurricane Ian as at 1pm was some 109miles WNW of Grand Cayman. See graphics attached.

Our Hazard Management Committee has dropped hurricane warning for Grand Cayman and put in place a Tropical Storm Warning for Grand Cayman and a Tropical Storm Watch remains in place for our Sister Islands. We have had reports of some flooding as well as seas over South Sound Rd with debris so a section of that road has been closed. There has been some power outages in the Brac, and non Grand Cayman in various areas. I lost power in West Bay for about an hour, it is back and no other issues since. There has been issues with people going out to do videos and photos of damage from this morning when no all clear has been issued so PSAs has been ongoing reminding people to stay home and off the roads. We continue to experience gusts of wind and rain on and off, sometimes heavy. See attached some of the messages from HMCI, CUC and an aerial photo from HMCI showing waves coming in. As we get info on damages will share. Blessings, Alicia (Jen)

- Cayman Islands Report

Good Morning one and all,

Hurricane Ian came closest to Grand Cayman at around 07:00 (local time) this morning. Currently we are experiencing occasional spells of heavy rain as the sky darkens. Then we have a period of brighter skies with no precipitation.

Winds I would describe as ‘blustery’… trees are being blown about but not stripped of their leaves as they were during Hurricane Ivan (2004).

So far, electricity, telephone lines (hence Internet) and mains (‘city’) water remain unaffected.

As far as the barometric pressure is concerned from an overnight low of 998.5, we are back up now (10:00 am local time) to 1000.8.

Our weather service has posted a remarkable video of the radar picture as the hurricane passed us by. The bands of rain seem to be avoiding Grand Cayman!!

More, later…

South Sound dock is partially under water. Do not see any debris and we have
power.

Good morning everyone, we have been having rains through the night here in West Bay, mostly light showers with some torrential downpours. Gusty winds on and off. Heard from a friend in EE that it was very gusty out there and raining, sometimes heavy. Our Hazard Management group advises we should start experiencing TS force Weather from 4am this morning. At 1am our time TS Ian was about 111 miles SSW of Grand Cayman. Hoping for the best as we await Ian's arrival. Blessings, Alicia(Jen)

- Pressure Drop
  • By Malcolm Saunders <malcolmgeorge at mac.com>
  • Date: Sun, 25 Sep 2022 14:54:10 -0500
Some observations from Bodden Town…

We have had a short-lived little squall-like shower with gusty wind a couple of
hours ago but it is just overcast at present. The air is pretty much still. The
sky is darker toward the east.

The barometric pressure is falling. 1006.3 at 12:30,
                                                        1005.3 at 13:30
                                                        1004.0 at 14:30

So, in the words of the late lamented Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert we have
‘Pressure Drop’.

More later,

Good afternoon everyone, here in Grand Cayman it was a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, however by about midday we had gathering clouds. About 12.20pm we had gusty winds here in West Bay with some showers. Have been having lot of thunder on and off. Reports also of heavy showers in George Town and other areas in grand Cayman around the same time. Had reports from family in Cayman Brac that they were also having showers from about 10 this morning from outer bands of TS Ian. We are as ready as we can be and now are in a wait and see state.  See photos from earlier today and video from 13.24pm today.

- Ian Approaching

Howdy,

It was a eerily beautiful this morning with light winds out of the SE. Blue skies to the North. However to the South ominous clouds are building. My lightning detector has detected 41 strikes so far, but I expect that to increase significantly as the day progresses.

Roads were relatively quiet, with a few stores open for last minute supplies.

TS Ian projected to pass approximately 100 miles to the West of Grand Cayman at hurricane strength, so likely we'll have very rough seas on the South and West coast. Wathcing Ian's track has been very stressful, 2 days ago the models were showing a direct hit. Memories of the wicked Ivan of 2004.

All the best,
Arthur

Bodden Town at noon,

The barometric pressure has drifted upwards to 1006.3 and held at that value
for three hours but has just dipped to 1006.1.

The skies are overcast now and we have heard rumbles of distant thunder from
time to time.

Good Morning!

Sunday dawned with partially cloudy skies and a relatively cool 29.8°C,
barometric pressure at 06:30 was 1005.0 hPa but by 07:30 was higher at 1005.8.
Humidity 82%.

On a recycling journey before dawn there were only a few cars on the road and
none of the usual bunches of cyclists speeding along on their exercise routine.
There were a dozen or more cars at the supermarket at the Countryside shopping
centre… maybe Fosters will be open… ON A SUNDAY, shock! Horror!

Hi Gert!

I don't think Cayman Brac is going to get much wind or rain, but my Bride and me are well prepared.    I wanted you to know that we will continue to be wx correspondents, if the situation warrants it.

I am concerned for Grand Cayman;  too much concrete and asphalt, and poor construction makes them very vulnerable.   That, and not much elevation.

Good to hear from you!   Thanks for keeping in touch.

You all be well and safe.

  God bless,

Lance

Howdy,

Preparations are well along the way with everyone. Eyes are glued to the NHC for updates. Stores are still bustling and the roads are busy. Quite a few people have already flown out ahead of things so the airport is also busy.

On the ground it's a lovely day here with the exception of the winds being more Northeasterly rather than their normal Southeasterly and a hot 91F.

I found the picture of designated hurricane parking quite interesting. The security guards were protecting these valuable spots with much vigour.

Matilda the hen seems to have just had another set of chicks. She was not happy with me when I tried to pet them. I know She'll find a nice safe spot to ride out the storm.

My weather station will stay up as long as the UPS lasts after power goes out, hoping to capture some good storm data.

All the best, and keep safe,
Arthur

Well here we go.
At the moment, there is a slight breeze out of the northeast. The sun is
shining bright and it is hot outside. Not a humid heat, just downright hot. The
sky is clear for the most part…just a few puffy clouds off in the distance.

We have done all we can to prepare. Just a matter of waiting now. I had to make
a run in to town to assist a friend with their preparations. From what I could
see, everywhere was ram packed with people doing their last minute buying. Glad
to say we got that all out of the way weeks ago.

The experts are saying we could possibly get anywhere between 8- 10 inches of
rain! If it holds true, that will be a major problem for those who live in low
lying areas.

Will update once conditions change.

Good morning from Cayman! Long lines and frustration started yesterday with
people waiting until the last minute to prepare. We are all set here, enabling
us to enjoy the beach all to ourselves. The calm before the storm I think. Stay
