Our thoughts are with everyone in Laura’s path.  It is horrifying.  It is mind boggling to those who wait for her arrival.  We understand.  We feel for you.  We send you strength, fortitude and wisdom.  EVACUATE!  Get in your car and leave.  This is no joke and a potential 20 foot storm surge is not survivable.

Now the hubs is reading “Issacs Storm”.  The hurricane in the book hit 120 years ago and decimated Galveston with great loss of life.   The storm surge caused that loss of life. The NWS and NHC have come such a long way since then.  We are grateful for modern technology and all of the advances made over the years. Heed the warnings.  We want you to come out from the other side of this storm.

K

PS- The early models for the blob coming off of Africa show a possible Caribbean threat.  Time will tell.

PPS-  I really do not like September.

It started raining in earnest this morning just after our wake up cup of joe (coffee).  It has not stopped since but to taper off to a fine drizzle and then return in earnest.  The winds have been mild so far.  We don’t expect anything too severe.  Bundled up like it is a snow day in the States including jeans, long sleeve shirts socks and slippers.  It is a cold type of damp for these fair weather bones!  So far the electricity is holding (hate to say that as I am tempting fate) and the internet is holding strong (thank you Fire-Fi!).

Hubs is cooking up another type of storm in the kitchen and I am looking forward to the chocolate chip cookies.

It is truly fascinating watching these storms defy the models.  Nothing like the keen eye of observation.

More later if needed,

K

- All tucked in
  • By Kate Cole <kate at elquenepovieques.com>

It is a noisy night here in Vieques.   The frogs, crickets and random critters are chirping away after the late afternoon showers.  We have a slight breeze coming through the house up here in Pilon. It is just gently rocking the lamp shades and fluffing the fringe on my shawl draped over the chair.   I was down in Esperanza today.  It was hot!  I heard a test run of my neighbors generator, listened to fantastic reggae from a car sound system, and gazed at the clear, cool bay wishing for a good old fashioned beach day.
Watching Laura and realizing there is quite a bit of uncertainty and waiting for Levi to post on Tropical Tidbits.  Currently she will pass right over us (we are under a Tropical Storm warning) and that means she will have a couple of hours to change her mind.  Hoping and not hoping to see the elusive Fujiwhara Effect in the Gulf.  Hoping as a weather geek to see it.  Hoping it doesn't happen because there are real people that could be affected.
Stay safe out there and thanks for the reports from down island.
Tucked into the sofa but about to move for dinner (I call this move exercise).

Certain thing for today-  We are one day closer to ending 2020.

- Latest Episode of Certain Uncertainties
  • By Kate Cole <kate at elquenepovieques.com>

A sprinkle just bounced off the roof and we have a nice breeze today.  Thunder is rumbling in the distance.  The haze is starting to clear and we can see Main Island again.  We are currently under a Tropical Storm Watch due to Thirteen.
Certain things:
1.  Thirteen is out there huffing and puffing.
2. Fourteen is out the huffing and puffing but already well past us.
3.  A blob just dropped off of Africa.  It is huffing and puffing.
4.  The testing of the Municipal Generator to power the island in case of a power outage is cancelled for Sunday, shocker! (Personally I would have tested it on June 1st but I am an uber-planner).
5. The last ferry to Main Island is tonight.  After that we are all out here bobbing around together unless you want to fly out.  But why would you do leave when we are so much fun!

Uncertain things:
1. Is the center of circulation in thirteen moving elsewhere?
2.  Will all the weather websites implode with two potential storms in the Gulf and a potential Florida strike?
3. Did everybody stock up early for peak hurricane season?
4. Will my personal Spanish white wine stash hold out until the end of 2020? (Doubtful and this could move to certain things).
5. Will we make it through this horrid year we call 2020 without a disasterous hurricane landfall? ( Super fingers crossed, with a hail Mary and a little superstition mixed in.  Please feel free to add whatever you can to prevent this situation).
Seriously it is that time of year.  Stock up, have a plan and keep watching the NHC.  I cannot wait for September to be over and we have not even started.  On that note how many days until 2020 is over?
I will keep you posted!

All is well here in Vieques.  We received much needed rain for the garden and winds that only caused minor vegetative damage.  No flooding and we are thankful.  Here is a picture of Esperanza Bay mid-afternoon with Mt. Pirata in the background.

Stay safe!

- Update to Certain/ Uncertain
  • By Kate Cole <kate at elquenepovieques.com>

Happy afternoon to everybody!

As can be imagined it is currently overcast here.  We had a bit of wind this morning and rain that started around 10:30.  We have had several squalls blow through.  Rain gauge is showing 2-1/8 inches.  Not bad!

Certain things:

  1. Hubs made me crispy mashed potato cakes for breakfast!
  2. I selected a good book for today, “Issacs Storm: A Man, A Time and the Deadliest Hurricane in History”.  It seems an appropriate read for 2020.
  3. Cold Godello will be served at promptly at 5:00 PM.

Uncertain things:

  1. If the power goes out will they be able to turn it back on?
  2. PTC9 is getting close to closing off circulation.  When? We do not know.
  3. Where our older cat is.

I will post more later.

- Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 or Certain Uncertainties
  • By Kate Cole <kate at elquenepovieques.com>
  • Date: Tue, 28 Jul 2020 19:33:25 -0400

Ahhhh, here we are a little over half way through 2020.  In the spirt of this grand year (sarcasm note) we have a storm that can’t decide if it wants to be a storm.  At points it was a huge scattered mess, then it decided to add some wind, then separated into two blobs, tilted on its axis, gained forward speed, lost a little forward speed, and gained some more forward speed and has now decided to straighten itself up on its axis.   All of this has occurred on its way west, west northwest toward the Lesser Antilles and on its way to the Greater Antilles.  One of my favorite forecasters said that there are many uncertainties with this potential storm and we won’t know what it will be until it is over Puerto Rico or just past Puerto Rico.  I threw my hands up in the air and said, “But of course! This is (expectative) 2020.  It is all uncertain.”

What we do know is:

  1. It will rain.
  2. We will have wind

With those two certain, uncertainties (because it is 2020 there are no certainties)  tomorrow I will fertilize the garden,  find a good book, and hope the hubby makes something that includes mashed potatoes for dinner.

- 92L and More
  • By Kate Cole <kate at elquenepovieques.com>
  • Date: Mon, 27 Jul 2020 15:53:42 -0400

Good afternoon!

It has been a long time since I have posted.  With all of my new free time due to the pandemic and multiple requests for posts I am back for a bit.  Right now we have a beautiful breeze and glorious, sunny skies. It would be a perfect beach day but the beach is off limits to sunbathing.  “Exercise only!” says the Governor as she waves her chancleta (flip flop) at us.  The Island is really quiet due to the lockdowns imposed in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The recent rains have been a godsend for the garden.  The horses are happy too.  The hubs is not so happy because he has to mow the lawn every week.  We are sincerely hoping that the rain eased the water restrictions on Main Island.

Huge 92L is moving across the Atlantic at 15-20 mph moving west to west northwestward.  It will arrive at the Leeward Islands on Wednesday bringing at least rain.  Let it stay a rain only event and we don’t have a storm in route. And we hope it doesn’t steal this fantastic breeze after it passes by.

Hope all is well with everyone out there and wishing you the best of health!

K

(Always check with the local weather service, NWS and NHC for weather information.  I am just an amateur weather geek that loves Vieques and rainy days for the garden!)
