- TS Laura in Distrito Nacional
  • By Guillermo Serra <gaquiles at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 23 Aug 2020 12:45:33 -0400
Good afternoon,

Distrito Nacional province was hit by midnight, with heavy rainfall until early
morning, power is out since 2 am. Reportedly just over a million homes without
power nationwide.

In my zone, trees knocked down utility poles, property damage in some areas,
especially in vulnerable zones near to water streams.

Stay tuned...

A light breeze with a few gusts and a couple of inches of much needed rain overnight here on the north coast and the barometer barely moved.  The power stayed on all night too.  No leaves to pick up so a relaxing Sunday.

Somewhat of a non-event in the region (at least from my vantage point). Winds were not a factor. We did receive some heavier squalls between 4am and 530am. Garbage pail is were it always is. No power interruptions. Dull calm morning awaits.

In Santo Domingo TS Laura hit around 2am. Lots of rain and wind. The power went out almost immediately after the wind started. It wasn't that bad, all things considered. I slept through it except for waking up to close the window a little since I was getting rained on.This morning it's very overcast and rainy with a nice breeze.

The weather in Santo Domingo was sunny and humid this morning. Some light breezes this afternoon. Oddly, a tree behind my apartment fell down, although there was hardly any wind.  It's been overcasting and rainy most of the afternoon with intermittent thunderstorms. No wind yet.

We hardly had any weather at all in Santo Domingo. There were a brief shower Thursday evening. Overnight it started, though. Tons of wind. It blew out a screen window and knocked over a plant inside. At one point rain blew in sideways. Lots of lightning and distant thunder.

At least 5 hours of very hard storm winds and rain has caused damage over the island. Trees down in many places, some roofs off, hundreds of small houses destroyed in Hato Mayor. Many are still without power.

The rain has stopped here in Cabarete, but still breezy although calmer than before.
Watch out for this storm!

- Heavy rains and winds on the North coast

This morning breeze and overcast, some tree branches down here and there. Since around 2 pm heavy rain and strong wind here in Cabarete. Worse conditions here locally than we experienced with Irma. Hopefully, it will not last too long. Also, we have no power, so let's see how it goes.

I drove from Punta Cana to La Romana early this morning. Once you are 10km's inland not much excitement. Overcast and some drizzle. La Romana was fine. On the way back, similar conditions until just east of the toll booth.

I live just west of the airport. I would say wind gusts around 40 in the region...maybe a bit stronger up around Uvero Alto. No doubt there will be those claiming much higher, but 40 is in the ballpark. Some regionalized flooding in areas where flooding occurs after a 10 minute thunderstorm, thus if you live here, you are accustomed to it. The barometer has been on a steady rise since around 9:30am when it bottomed out at 1002hPa. Currently sitting at 1008.7hPa.

Cheers,
PCMike

I was really expecting us to get some weather in Santo Domingo throughout the night but it was incredibly calm. No breeze at all and no rain. I thought I wouldn't get my morning dog walk in but ended up walking 3 miles with just intermittent sprinkles and no breeze at all.

It just started to rain at about 9:45am. It's moderate rain but little to no wind.

- July 29 Update 2
  • By Mick Wigal <mfwags22 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 29 Jul 2020 23:59:40 +0000 (UTC)
The winds started picking up today around noon in Santo Domingo. There's usually very little wind but there were lots of gusts this afternoon. One knocked a plant over inside. I went for a run at about 3:00 and there were a lot of branches and debris down. I went to the Botanical Garden and there were lots of strong wind gusts and they told me to be careful because some trees had fallen.

There was a really odd orange glow for about 5 minutes as the sun set and now we've just settled into a nice, cool breeze.

With the change of the projecting course of PTC 09 toward a more westward heading that has it passing direct over Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo has been put on a yellow alert.

This morning when I woke up I thought it looked like there was moderate Sahara dust. I assumed it was clouds but kept thinking how much it looked like Sahara dust and just saw from the local meteorologist that the dust in the area is preventing the development of the storm. Let's hope it keeps up and we should get a good rain to fill up the reservoirs.

- July 28 Rain
  • By Mick Wigal <mfwags22 at yahoo.com>

Here in Santo Domingo we've been having afternoon rain showers every day. The mornings have been clear but then we get some much needed rain around 5. Yesterday I went for a run and got caught in a downpour but found a roof to wait it out for 10 minutes.

Keeping an eye on this next storm. Right now we're on the edge of the Tropical Storm Warnings in Dominican Republic and as long as the storm passes to the north of us, I think we'll be ok here in the south. I guess it will all depend on the track it takes over the next day.

- Santo Domingo Tropical Wave
  • By Mick Wigal <mfwags22 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 22 Jul 2020 16:19:02 +0000 (UTC)
We've finally had some rain the last two days associated with a passing tropical wave. Yesteday afternoon the sky got really dark. I went out for a run and there was some moderate rain and distance thunder and lightning so I came home and we had a hard 10 minute shower.

Today has been overcast with some light showers.

We're keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Gonzalo. It's ironic here because the presidential elections were two weeks ago and Gonzalo was a candidate and he lost the election.

- June 26 Thunderstorms

A small thunderstorm with light showers passed through last night at around 1am.

Now we've had a pretty strong thunderstorm come through for the last 45 minutes. It's really helped bring the temperature down and should clean up a lot of the dust, which was covering cars.

Of course more dust is on the way so not sure how long that will last...

- Update

  • Date: Tue, 23 Jun 2020 23:06:35 +0000 (UTC)
The Sahara Dust has gotten much worse in Santo Domingo today. Even the cat is
sneezing. Eyes itching and feeling heavy. Combined with the 107 heat index and
it's hard to feel good. Supposedly it's supposed to start dispersing a bit
overnight and then gradually dissipate through Thursday. I've still gotten out
to walk the dog a few miles but it really bothers my eyes. Fortunately, since
I'm already wearing a mask my breathing isn't really affected on our walks.
It's actually worse inside without a mask.

- 6.22 Update
  • By Mick Wigal <mfwags22 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2020 12:29:39 +0000 (UTC)
The Sahara dust is finally noticeably here in Santo Domingo this morning. I suspect it started arriving a little over the weekend because both my wife and I had minor sore throats. The sky is very overcast like it's going to rain and the air is definitely getting hazier. They're telling people (especially those with asthma) to stay inside because the air quality is so low and they're saying the temperatures will be hotter through Thursday.

The bulk of the dust hasn't hit Santo Domingo yet. It looks like it's just now over Punta Cana and will probably be over us by the end of the day.

- Re: June 17 Santo Domingo Weather

Hi All. I followed everyone's reports last hurricane season and figured why not join in this year. I'm in Santo Domingo but I've lived in several places in the Caribbean and have been through several hurricanes so weather this time of year is something I follow closely.

It's been extremely hot in Santo Domingo for the last few weeks. Last week I went for a run and the heat index was 101. Way too hot for this early in the year.  We've also had very little rain over the last two years. We've had a few sprinkles periodically but few big rains.

I woke up this morning, though, and it's very overcast and there's a moderate rain. It feels great to have some cool breezes finally. I mentioned to my wife that it didn't seem as hot yesterday. We went the whole day without turning on the fan.

There's been a garbage dump on fire on the outskirts of the city for the last five weeks or so and we wake up to noxious fumes almost every morning so I'm hoping this will help tamp that down.
