Iota is truly an extremely impressive hurricane in appearance, overall structure and in forecasted intensity for this time of year. This is a fearsome beast of a hurricane, & it really has the cyclonic signature form of a typical MDR (Main development Region) system- more suited to an August or September Cape Verde type of Hurricane in its satellite presentation etc.
Well, if this is the harbinger of exacerbated Climate change with increasingly warmer oceans then God be With us All going forward in a warmer World! Thoughts and intense prayers are with all who lie in this Storm's path. Really a potentially ultra Catastrophic situation impending for Central America unfortunately. Hopefully, preparedness and evacuation measures were fully activated Re: the ongoing pandemic.
Sadly though, Iota's upgrade to Cat 5 status really seemed inevitable... Again Absolutely Heart- wrenching for those in the direct path of this Monster Category Five Hurricane! Really Hoping and Praying that this does Not end up being an incalculable Catastrophe for Central/ Latin America, and our entire region by extension. Lord be with these people in what is likely to be their darkest hour & most unprecedented disaster in decades post Eta. With AGW (Accelerated Global Warming) on graphic display like this All vulnerable coastlines in the Americas need to urgently look at disaster risk reduction and advance critically urgent cyclonic Climate change Mitigation and resiliency policies.

Monday waking up in the morning we were so surprised to see that there had been landslides and flooding in various parts of Dominica! One quite near us on the Ponte Casse Canefield road!! We heard no rainfall in the night! When we woke up it was wet around the house but not raining and it did not rain all day. It was just very dark and very chilly and extremely depressing. It reminded me of living in the UK!! One of the reasons we actually left Cornwall for the Caribbean. The winters were always damp and very depressing.
We have woken up today with grey skies and gusty winds, no rain but very damp conditions. Listening to the radio weather report we are going to have unstable conditions, we have to watch out for landslides and flooding!! What is new!! We are expecting a Tropical wave on Friday!! It truly is extremely depressing at the moment!! We all are having to deal with Covid world wide! We here in the Caribbean seriously do not need this weather.
We were so surprised to see the flooding in Antigua!! We lived in Antigua for 18 years and never experienced the flooding they are having now!
We just hope that we all get a let up and that nobody gets badly hurt and hopefully no deaths. We just have to stay watchful and stay home as much as possible. |

The weather front continues! This bad weather front has been going on for at least 7 days!! We are so fed up with it! We have had a lot of rain during the night and so far this morning. We know there has been some flooding and landslides. People have to be very cautious travelling anywhere today and be aware of landslides and flash flooding!
It is the 1st November today and to be honest we could be in England or Europe as it is very chilly in the valley. Winter cometh!! We need the sunshine please. No swimming in the river for us for a few days!😱

The weather is continuing to be the same that we have had most of the week! Very grey, gusty winds and very heavy showers. Where we live in the Layou valley we can hear the Layou river roaring down below us! We also have heard that the small bridge over the river by Neba has gone which will be very difficult for any farmers in that area! We have not heard of any other bridge that has been damaged but we would imagine there has been flooding and some landslides. We are not sure how much longer this weather is going to be with us? Maybe a few more days! This is by far the worst weather we have had this hurricane season!
Today in Dominica is Creole day! Dominica is celebrating her Independence, Usually we have the Creole festival but with Covid this year this is not happening. The Covid pandemic is affecting the whole world and it is very devastating for many! Here in Dominica we have been quite lucky, We have 9 new cases at the moment. We are hoping that Dominicans are very careful this weekend with their celebrations, as we are having a long weekend. People have to remember to be very cautious.

There has been continued Consolidation of convection associated with the passage of tropical wave 60 (Now 96L).
A mid- low level center of circulation associated with this system seems to have passed over the St. Vincent (SVG)/ St. Lucia area as showed up quite clearly on the Martinique radar on Thursday night. Pre- ETA- our current Potential tropical cyclone's (PTC) development is ongoing...
& There have been impacts in the Southern Windwards. Unfortunately, there are no active correspondents in the SVG area at present.
In Saint Vincent (SVG) Landslides, wind damage with roofs blown off and flash flooding has been reported there with over 100mm of rainfall occurring in some areas during
the last 6 hours. These impacts were apparently due to the system's mid- low level center of circulation (LLCC) going over the SVG area particularly central and north St. Vincent earlier on Thursday night. https://news784.com/local-news/nemo-damaged-to-house-roofs-in-9-villages-across-svg/
Airport observations from Grenada to Martinique including Barbados indicated winds in the range of at least tropical depression strength with gusts to tropical storm force above 39mph on Thursday. Tropical storm wind gusts have been observed on all of these islands down to Grenada and even Tobago.
2020 keeps on coming... SMH.
Additional squalls in the islands are expected as the system makes its continued passage into the Caribbean sea.

Well since Monday in Dominica, we have been experiencing this weather system!!
We have had bad weather since Monday! all I can see is more bad weather on the stormcarib website! It is very depressing. Over the last two days we have been having heavy rain showers. It is also chilly as we have a lot of cloud cover.
Looking at the weather coming it looks like this could be in for the next few days!
In Dominica we are having our Independence celebrations! It is very sad.
We also have to be careful with the Covid situation and crowd gatherings!
What a world we are living in at the moment.

We have had 4 days of really dull grey, chilly weather. Today is no exception. We have had a huge shower right now with very strong winds. Looking at the satellite the tropical wave is here probably tonight and tomorrow squally weather.
Everyone should take precautions who live near rivers. Take care driving too.

We are having a very gentle wet day. I have to say the temperature has been excellent. The rain is not too heavy! We have had some very good dry periods.
We did a cook up and had fun doing this. The dogs have enjoyed the weather too, a great day for chilling. It is actually river day here in Dominica, seems a suitable day.
It looks like we are going to have this weather all night, hopefully no flooding. People who live in areas prone to flooding or landslides should be watchful.

Well, we are thankful and reflective here in the Nature Isle of the Caribbean, Dominica... Its been three years since that dreaded day when Super Catastrophic Hurricane Maria made landfall as a Category 5 along the length and breadth of our Lovely and gorgeously scenic Nature island. Her onslaught began on Monday 18th September, 2017 into the morning hours of Tuesday 19th September, 2017. & Those dates will be forever etched in the minds of all Dominican survivors.
However, inspite of this seemingly incalculable impact we have indeed come roaring back as a Nation by building back better and stronger, and with loads of resilience. Our flora and fauna is also rapidly getting back to pre- Maria levels already, which is just awesome and incredibly providential & Blessed. Of course, the recovery process continues for many, and progress for the most part has been highly commendable.
Thus far we are truly grateful that no major systems have come our way in 2020. The precursors to Isaias, Laura/ Marco & Nana all affected our weather somewhat, but so far so good. Paulette and now Teddy were also in the mix having 'stolen' our usual cool and moist trade winds, and resulted in wind reversals and some scattered thunderstorms at times. However, we'll gladly take that latter lot any day over any direct or significant impacts from any storms and hurricanes. Now, we still have several weeks to go in the balance of a hurricane season that's already shaping up to be historic in its scale and scope. In fact, its almost unbelievable that we are already into the Greek alphabet for naming storms... (2020 -SMH)
Hoping and praying for the very best in the balance of this hyper-active season & trusting that no more monstrous Cape Verde Hurricanes Like Teddy will be forming. Stay safe everyone (special regards to Bermuda) and of course be prepared come what may folks.

We have heavy rain during the night!! At the moment we are experienciing a lot of rain, thunder and lightning. I have not heard of any flooding but assume there might be some.
It looks like the depression will move over us completely by this afternoon we hope.

We have had quite a lot of rain in the valley, thunder and lightning. Nothing outrageous but enough to know the weather is affecting us. The system seems to be traveling quite quickly.
It looks like here in Dominica we will get more weather later, so everyone stay vigilant and safe.
We just have to be very observant over the next few weeks, be prepared for the worse and never take anything for granted. |

We have woken up to a beautiful morning! You would not think there was any weather out there! One of the things we love living in the valley is the Layou river! The river is not too far from our home and this morning there are the most beautiful misty clouds rising from the river with the backdrop of the cliffs and greenery it is quite stunning. The air is very muggy and moist, which lets us know there is weather out there! It is very quiet.
It is weird looking at the tropical depression 13 as it covers a very large area and is teasing the islands where is he going which way and how much water does it hold! Hopefully the depression will keep going north and miss the islands. We are being warned about a lot of rain which may cause flooding, we seriously hope not.
Everyone should stay vigilant. Hopefully we will all be safe and OK. |

We experienced tropical storm conditions from 10.00 pm. Thunder, lightning and heavy rain. We have now got an island wide electricity outage! Some water supplies are cut off as well. We have not heard of any damage. The rivers have been filled but we have not heard of any flooding, fingers crossed.
It is still very dark and the clouds are very low in the valley. We hope the worst of this wave is over and that we will have the electricity back soon.
We hope all the other islands are not too badly affected.

We had a very weird day yesterday. I was sitting on the deck as I do every day when a huge flash of lightning ripped across the sky and the loudest clap of thunder!! I was taken totally by surprise, checked the weather and saw a blob coming over us! The rest of the day was very windy and lots of showers. Overnight it has been very dry!
Looking at 92L he looks extensive but not well formed however, we could get a lot of rain. We shall have to wait, see and watch today. It looks like Dominica will get some of this bad weather. We just hope not too much flooding or landslides. The path seems to be going more towards the Leeward islands.
We all need to watch this weather big time. Have supplies at home big time.

The weather is very cool today and it was yesterday. Here in Dominica we have been pretty lucky. Gonzalo chose to stay way down below us. I hope very much that Gonzalo does not do too much damage.
We have our eyes now focused on next week! We hope that the weather does not come off Africa like cannon balls, one after the other!

So, it has begun! We are expecting the first Tropical storm or hurricane! We are just keeping our fingers crossed that Gonzalo does not cause too much damage.
The path Gonzalo is taking looks well below us. Hopefully we will not get too much bad weather. We just hope the islands he visits do not get a hard hit.
We have our hurricane stores and hope that everyone else has too.

I am sorry not to have posted for a little while! We have had some issues with the internet!
We have had in the last week, Tuesday, the first real tropical wave, with thunder and lightning this is the first time our puppy Envy had experienced thunder or lightning! Envy barked at the thunder and ran indoors for the lightning!!
Yesterday and today we have had a tropical wave with just thunder no lightning. A great deal of rain. Dominica is looking green, green, green!! Our veggies and fruits are growing beautifully especially our avocados!
We are praying we do not have any hurricanes this season anywhere in the Caribbean!
Dominica is being extremely cautious about opening up the boarders. Very, very careful, which we are all very thankful for.
Right now it is cloudy, with a lovely breeze, no rain, just really relaxing. We hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday. Stay safe. |

Yesterday saw the lifting of the Saraha dust, as the day proceeded we noticed the sky lightening up until we could actually see the clouds! We celebrated by having a dip in the river, which was so refreshing and wonderfully relaxing! All the fish swimming around us too!
This morning we have woken up to blue skies and white puffy clouds. We can breathe fresh air into our lungs. Apparently, a respite as more dust is on the way, maybe, tomorrow or Friday. So today we will make up for the lost days indoors, out and about today.
At least the hurricanes are at bay for the time being!

The Sahara dust is heavy in our skies. It is truly sad. Our water barrels for the garden are red with sand. I am staying indoors as it is nasty. We have bought our 2 dogs inside too.
We have been advised to stay home and that this dust could be here for several more days.
It is very upsetting for everyone in all the islands. We all have been staying home for Covid virus and now this sand which in itself is like a storm!!
The sand will affect the water supply across the islands. I am not sure if anyone has thought about this???
We truly need a break. Everyone needs to stay safe. The animals could be affected too. Please keep this in mind.

- Sahara dust

Over the past 24 hours we have had a lot of rain. It rained a lot in the night and is raining now! We are also experiencing a great deal of Sahara dust. We have been advised to stay inside as the dust really is bad especially for people who get asthma!
We cannot see any blue in the sky although the sun is shining. It is really weird. It looks like the sand could be here for a week or more looking at the graphics.
At least the sand will hopefully keep the bad weather at bay for a while! Tropical waves withstanding.
Happy Fathers day for all Dads out there. I hope the sand does not make the day a white out!! Stay happy and safe everyone.

Dominica has been experiencing nice weather! We have had quite a lot of rain in the last couple of days here in our valley! This is great as we needed rain and now the garden is looking green and lush! Our veggies are growing too and I have got a lovely hand of plantain great for our lunch!
The sun is out a lot, we have a really good breeze today and a great temperature so I have been doing a bit of a cook up. Everything looks clear at the moment which might give us a good weekend for Father's day on Sunday!
We don't know if other islands have them but for some reason the Chinese have put street lights up around Dominica! If there is a hurricane here this year this could be catastrophic as if the poles fall down, they will definitely block the roads and it could be really destructive. Let us hope this does not happen! Why on earth would we need street lights in the middle of the countryside it is a bit baffling to say the least!!

Well, it has been a while since I posted anything!
The hurricane season is upon us once again and it is said that we are going to have a bad season with some major hurricanes. We just hope none of the island chain gets hit with any major hurricanes!
The pandemic has caused so much chaos and so much destruction, so many deaths and so much trauma to so many people around the world. We have all been affected by it. How very, very sad. The world is changed forever!
Obviously, in the islands we seem to have been very lucky compared to the rest of the world. Here in Dominica we have had 16 covid cases with everyone recovering and we now have 2 more Dominicans that came back into Dominica from abroad. They were quarantined and are doing well so far, fingers crossed. We just have to hope that the islands are careful about opening their borders.
Today is very fresh, some white fluffy clouds, blue sky and a breeze very pleasant!
We are here wishing everyone a great weekend. We will be keeping you all posted. |
