Dorian is a catastrophic 185 mph hurricane, stronger than Maria or Irma 2 years ago. It doesn't look good for the Abacos and Grand Bahama. I have just opened two Pleas for Help forums. Hope they can put people together who are in the same situation. This is a time to help each other out. Communicating with each other is often a great relief in the period right after the storm when we have the 'cone of silence', because the people affected are unable to communicate with us. -Gert

"Pro" tip from Celeste on Barbados: As you probably noticed it is hard or impossible to get through on cell phones to the Abacos or Grand Bahama right now for various reasons. However, texting does sometimes work. Please try it! Another option, which I should actually advertise more before a storm hits is using an app like FireChat. With this app you can somehow send messages without internet or cellular data! It's of course best if you download it before a storm hits... -Gert

We are not presently under any storm threat..........but somehow calling 'this' just rain seems an understatement. The drops beat heavily and steadily on the roof and ground. The breeze seems to "huff and puff". There is no reason I should be watching and checking
my ceiling for leaks....and yet that's exactly what I am doing. Then I wonder ....if I am feeling this way and I did not experience anything major during Dorian..( does moderate shingle loss and having a part of the ceiling falling in to leave naked rafters
even count?)..... I can not even begin to understand the heaviness and stress that residents of the Abacos and Grand Bahama feel during this type of rain. I can only sympathize .
The recovery efforts are well underway. International and local agencies are steadily working together to help storm victims (including our four legged family members ).
Many persons remain missing but friends and relatives remain hopeful......even as the days pass .
Over one thousand persons are residing in shelters on New Providence island. They are receiving health care, meals and counselling. Some private sector companies are offering work to the displaced, in efforts to help them financially.
Students who were attending classes at the northern campus of the University of The Bahamas ( on Grand Bahama island) are faced with challenges and decisions
to make regarding continuing their studies. This is because the wall of rushing water destroyed student dorms and wiped out the ground floor of the university campus. Faculty, staff and administration are working tirelessly to assist students in various
ways, including collaboration with US colleges and universities to facilitate a semester abroad.
Government and private schools are helping by accepting displaced students into their classes. Education officials stress the importance of providing some routine for the children and helping them get back on track with their studies.
Citizens, residents and even visitors share in the recovery work, serving as shelter or distribution or counselling or other service volunteers. The journey will be a long one but we continue to work towards building a better tomorrow.
In Grand Bahama, some businesses have reopened... ...ready to serve the community and lend some small level of normality to the chaos left by Dorian.

Just a brief report, I have a communication problem and hope this is not just
repeating what others have said.
I am aware that many parts of the Island are totally devastated so I am one of
the really lucky ones, being safe and with only relatively minor damage to my
home.
Things are returning to some degree of normality for some of us.
Electricity and water and telephones are gradually being restored but water
only for flushing, not even bathing. I hope the looting I heard about has
stopped.
Lines at gas stations are shorter and the foodstores that are open have some
fresh food. One bank has reopened.
Sadly there is a general mood of helplessness in the people I have talked to,
some are leaving saying they will not return. The shock we are all in following
Dorian is worse than I can remember after previous hurricanes.
I wish I could be more positive but can only hope and pray those who lost
everything will get the help they desperately need.

Its been long days since the twin punches of Dorian tried to knock out the Bahamas. The people of the Abacos and Grand Bahama were severely impacted. Entire communities were washed away or blown down by the strength of the storm. Cold raging flood waters
tore children from parents, wives from husbands, friends from each other and filled homes to the ceiling. The northern Bahamas campus of the national university-University of The Bahamas. was torn up by 20ft walls of rushing water. The dormitory was destroyed
leaving students who had come from other islands homeless.
The confirmed death toll has risen to 50 and to date there are at least 2000 persons reported as missing. Hope remains that they some will be found alive , evacuated to another island .
The storm brought devastation to two of the nations three major economic and population centers. However,government, the local private sector, church , the general
public and NGOs are working alongside international NGOs, charities, and groups from other nations in recovery efforts. Emergency medical , housing and food centers have been set up and organized to assist storm victims. The citizens and residents of the
Bahamas have been bruised and battered but there is a sense of community. Persons from all walks of life are stepping up to assist in the recovery efforts.
Shelters have been set up to provide temporary housing for displaced persons. The shelters are manned by teams of professionals, volunteers, national security staff and international supporting staff. Donations of food, medicine, clothing are coming in to
help these persons.
The medical authorities have two difficult
tasks........looking after the health needs of those from the affected islands and also carefully documenting the deaths of those who did not survive the storm. International support is being provided in these tasks.
Many animals also perished. Agencies out of the US have been working with local groups to rescue and treat storm affected animals, even going so far as to ship
some of the stronger animals to shelters abroad, making space for those coming from Abaco and Grand Bahama.
Much of the images that are being featured in the various news cycles show the crushing impact of the storm. Yet, it is vital that the world understand that there are several other islands that experienced minimum
storm damage. As a tourism based country, we need visitors to come . In order for us to recover , we need persons to be employed. We need the tourism sector to be healthy and grow. To YOU, out there in the rest of the world.........I say, please visit........Exuma
( see the swimming pigs).........Eleuthera ( taste great pineapple tarts...relax in the glowing aquamarine waters) New Providence ( commonly called Nassau ....which is actually the name of the city,,,,,,,,visit historical forts, tour National Art Gallery,
Botanical Gardens, casinos.....swim with sharks, swim with dolphins)....... Long Island, Cat Island, Inagua.........so much still left to see and do........
Yes, Abacos, Grand Bahama...were hit VERY BADLY. We mourn the loss of friends and family.But the Bahamian spirit is not crushed. We are working together for recovery. We are THANKFUL for the help that has poured in from the many generous individuals, nations
and organizations. We invite you to come and visit our many other islands as we continue to recover and grow. We move, FORWARD, UPWARD, ONWARD...Together!

The Abacos are a disaster. Possibly up to 2500 dead; swept away or crushed by collapsing buildings or debris.
Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay airports are open to disaster assistance and other agencies but not to insurance adjusters, homeowners or others. That will change as things improve but forget trying to get to your property for now.
Many houses had their roofs scalped or other serious damage.
Phone service is poor. We have received emails and telephone calls, but calling back certain telephone exchanges (in particular 577-XXXX) has not worked for us.
Most are homeless, hungry and afraid but the authorities and authorized individuals are working their way through the carnage.
If someone wants to help donate to the Red cross or a legitimate agency.
We have not been approached by scammers, but no doubt they exist.
Will report more when we know more.

Abaco is devastated. From Spring City to Crown Haven in the North the damage is overwhelming. Marsh Harbour, Dundas and Murphy Town are destroyed. However, from Casuarina Point down to Sandy Point in the South are relatively untouched having received winds of ONLY 130mph or so. BPL have informed us that they are trying to fix the downed poles between Wilson City and the Neem farm (about 50 or so) after which they will be able to restore power from Casuarina to Sandy Point. The main problem in the South is water supplies, food and fuel. If we had those we can stay in our undamaged homes here in the south.

This storm has caused significant damage throughout the Bahamas. There has been flooding throughout. Abaco and Grand Bahama in particular have experienced major destruction. Whole communities have been swept away. Families have reported missing members. Persons
have been calling in for help due to them being trapped in their homes, with flood waters rising. Electricity is off and storm winds continue to beat Grand Bahama.There are 5 confirmed fatalities due to Dorian.
Affected communities have been assisted by agencies and groups including the Bahamas Defense Force and the United States Coast Guard.

My dear friend who ran a business in the Abacos had word that matters in Green Turtle Key are very bad. I won’t write details as it is third hand but we all suspect the worse. Having been to the Abacos and
knowing the devastation on Barbuda, I can only imagine.

I was able to evacuate to the capital where conditions are good
We lost communication with h Abaco as the eye passes over Marsh Harbour

It is good that The Weather channel is checking in yesterday government
officials including the Prime Minister went to the Abaco Keys to persuade
locals to evacuate

06.30 Sunday 1st September
Residents seem to be prepared, the roads much quieter in Freeport yesterday
afternoon.
The authorities have said they will leave it as late as possible before they
cut off electricity. Obviously then communications will be pretty much
non-existent for the vast majority.
We hope and pray for everyone to be safe.

... contrary to the hyperactive Cantore Channel aka what used to be known as
the estimable Weather Channel, all of the major resorts and business centres
in the Bahamas have NOT been evacuated. That being said, this weekend isn't
a great time to visit Abaco or Grand Bahama.

Today the traffic is busy shops are full with people buying supplied and people
are taking the hurricane seriously
We are glued to the weather channel and the nhc waiting for updates and praying
it takes a turn away from land
It is a ferocious hurricane and The Bahamas could be impacted so we need
support after it has passed

Certainly everyone in the .Freeport area is taking the threat of Dorian very
seriously. Many people have already boarded up.
Foodstores are packed, very long checkout lines, and the hardware stores
selling batteries and other supplies just as busy.
We will all continue to watch progress of Dorian closely.
