- March rainfall
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 3 Apr 2020 16:51:26 +0100
Hello to all, and hope you are safe and well. Still on lock down in Anguilla and probably for the foreseeable future. We have 3 cases here.
The rainfall on the Searocks for March was 2.80 inches, but none for the last week and things are starting to dry up quite quickly. Current temp is 80F inside and very little breeze.
Stay safe and take care,
JH

Sorry I am a bit late but we have had 1.78 inches of rain here on the Searocks in February, big difference to January , dread to think what is has been in the north of England, apparently a huge storm every weekend.
My best to all this evening.

- goodbye miss mermaid

It was with great sadness that I read Miss Mermaid has left us, I always enjoyed her posts and she was a great Caribbean wandering girl, and a super asset to Stormcarib.
Having said that we got nearly an inch of rain last night on the Searocks, so I think the heavens are crying for Miss Mermaid.
The cistern is running over again and it is pouring as I write.
My best to all and bon voyage to Miss Mermaid.

Good evening,
We have had 4.99 inches of rain here on the Searocks this month, which is a
lot. The island is very green, the mosi’s are busy, plants are happy. The ocean
is calm and we heard the whales are singing the day before yesterday while
diving.
Have a great evening,

Good evening Everyone,
With the various highs and lows circling around us this is how Anguilla has
looked for the last few evenings.
Diving today was mostly current and Cudas, one actually slapped Dougie with his
tail! They followed us the whole dive.
Hope our sunshine returns soon, visitors need it, fishermen need it, charter
boats need it, but I am worried another ground sea is coming in on Sunday.
Have a great evening wherever you are,
JH

The pic doesn’t do it justice , but I haven’t seen the ocean so angry for a
long while. Temp is 77f inside, colder and high winds on the porch.? All over
the world weather is being extraordinary, and no exemption here in Anguilla.
We all need to pay serious attention to climate change.
My best to all this evening.

- Full moon rising over Island Harhour (I think)
  • By joanie.howard1 at gmail.com
  • Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2020 20:18:22 -0400
Good evening All,
I think it is full moon tonight but I could be wrong, and it might be tomorrow
night.
We have had very strong winds all day, gusts up to 40 and 50 mph every few
minutes, fishing boats are all in everyone’s gardens. Whitecaps in abundance.
I had some sad news tonight, a very old friend of mine (we both worked for
PanAm in St Thomas in the 60’s). She now lives in Florida, but I knew she had
connections in Marsh Harbour in The Bahamas , I emailed her when hurricane
Dorian was imminent and she said they were in the states and all was O K. I
called her tonight to wish her a belated happy Christmas and New Years, she
told me her sister had died during Dorian at Marsh Harbour, Bahamas. I felt
awful that I hadn’t known.
This just underlined how much we must prepare for extreme weather. And how
important it is to communicate with each other.
A good night to all,
JH

- December Rain
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2020 15:35:35 +0000
We have had 3.23 inches of rain here on the Searocks in December, and already 1.75 inches so far this January. It has been overcast and rainy pretty much since Christmas and the ocean at times glassy flat alternating between big ground seas, strange weather, not alot of strong Christmas winds from the east which is more usual this time of year.  Today, however, I am happy to say it seems to be back to normal, lovely breeze, ocean covered with whitecaps, blue sea, blue sky and sunshine.
I attach a pic of a beautiful plant and its seeds and pods, all I can find out is that it is a Sapindaceae (family of Lychee). does anyone know more about it?
My best to everyone for the coming decade.

- Christmas message
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2019 20:36:10 +0000
Good Afternoon to all followers and contributors to Stormcarib,
This is a short Christmas message from Anguilla.
Today it is gorgeous, temperature about 80F on my porch with a middling
easterly breeze to keep everything cool. We have had 2.81 inches of rain so far
this month, the cistern is almost full (i have had family and friends staying,
so have used quite a lot of water) so it is looking good at the moment. The
diving has been great, though the visibility not so good as we have had quite
big ground seas running, a lot of old ‘club special D diving’ friends arriving
back, such a treat to catch up. Small Brown dog and I have been on the hunt,
have managed to demolish one bush rat in the garage, a yellow (invasive) frog
on the steps and a centipede in the downstairs apartment. However, the
Yellowbirds of Hightop, the Poincettia stick insect, the Small Brown Dog and I
wish everyone a Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a merry and prosperous New
Year. I also attach a pic of my minuscule Christmas Tree, decorated with small
bleached sea urchin Snowmen made by my friend Shirley Morgan and collected from
Junk’s Hole.
My very best wishes to you all,
JH

We had a HUGE ground sea yesterday, waves breaking right over the top of Little
Scrub Island, due, I think, to the large low in the middle of the Atlantic to
the north of us. Slightly quieter today but the ocean still looks like green
milk. No diving for a day or two.
My very best to Gert, Dave and all concerned with Stormcarib one way or
another. We seem to have got through the hurricane season, with the exception
of Dreadful Dorian, by the skin of our teeth, my thoughts and wishes to all in
the Bahamas and hope it helps a tiny bit to know that, there by the grace of
God go any of us, and that we are all wishing you the best recovery in whatever
form it takes.
A very good night to everyone,

Good Evening,
Yesterday afternoon our wind changed around to northwest and then west, unusual
here, then this afternoon we got .26 of an inch of rain again coming from the
west. Quite stormy and grey at the moment, current temp is 82f and it is humid
and sticky, and there is a fairly big ground sea coming from the north.
Hope Dave is right and Sebastian goes north and northeast, (pay attention
Bermuda).
My best to all, stay informed and ready. Don’t hear that hum yet from the fat
lady that I was hoping for.

I arrived back to Anguilla on Wednesday evening after a long two days
travelling with Air France (who looked after me well and was on time) and the
small brown dog (mark 11). The temperature is 86f, the cistern is full and we
have had .18 of an inch of rain since I got back. It is wonderful to be warm it
was 2 degrees above freezing with sleet and what we call a thin wind when we
left The Little Bay Barn on Tuesday morning. I do hope the fat lady is at
least humming.

All is well as far as I know in Anguilla, lush and green I am told by one of my neighbours. Fingers crossed the fat lady will start singing soon. I will report first hand after I get back next Wednesday.
I just wanted to remember all those who have made our world possible.

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

When you go home tell them of us and say
For your tomorrow we gave our today

Quiet night but at 7:00 AM, skies opened up, wind switched from SSE to west and heavy rain – a total of 1.02 so far (still some light rain).  Of course my west windows all leak so quite a mess to clean up.   But cistern is finally overflowing.  Love the sound!

We are still getting the “leftovers” from Karen – had several rain squalls today with a total of 0.61 inches of rain and several wind gusts in the mid-20’s during squalls.  Right now, a light rain has just started again – from looks of satellite, probably be showers all night long and clearing by morning.

- Anguilla after a non Jerry event
  • By Elvin's Weather Updates <elvin.richardson at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2019 12:44:40 -0400
Anguilla waited for what was expected to be at least a rain event.  Besides a short heavy down pour in the Valley around midday, yesterday was a normal day with some darken skies.  Jerry turned out to be a nonevent and business and Government started to return to normalcy early Friday morning after the all clear was given.  The event at least taught us that this is the busy season and to be prepared because the truth is #ItOnlyTakesOne

More storms are on the horizon that our eyes are presently watching.

Pleasant weather to all.

Jerry gave us a total of 0.02 in. of rain and avg. wind speed of 4.9 mph (with a gust of 19.2 in rain squall).  Let’s hope that this is the last  system we need to worry about for this season.

Good night!

An update.

Anguilla is cloud covered (thick) calm and dry with no breeze at the moment.  This is very weird... not a drop of rain or wind yet.  We are on the west side of the island very close to Meads Bay.

There is a loud humbing sound from crickets like in the summer in southern US states that I have not heard here before.  They probably know a storm is coming. My dog is acting normal and really gets nervous  during storms.  All clear at the moment.

Stay safe is STT.

All the best!

- Watching Jerry
  • By "Jed Lindblad" <jedsshed at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2019 09:38:07 -0400

Right now (9:30 AM AST), it is sunny and bright with a very light breeze, but according to the 5:00 AM update (19 September), Jerry’s CPA track takes him 102.5 miles north of us at 11:36 PM Friday night as a CAT 1 hurricane. If the current track holds true and Jerry doesn’t go crazy in the intensity department, we should be fine.

But, I must point out that Anguilla is still in the “Cone of Uncertainty” and a lot can change between now and Friday night. Keep a close watch and hope for the best and be prepared if conditions deteriorate.

A comment I would like to make, those of us that went through Irma, Maria, Louis and Hugo in one way or another, went through small beer compared with Dorian in the Bahamas (with possibly the exception of Barbuda and Irma and Puerto Rico during Maria)  the damage has been horrendous the death toll (yet to be revealed) appalling.  We thought we had been through a hard time, but we didn't have the horrors that The Abacos and Grand Bahama are experiencing. Now looking back we had it relatively easy. The message of this post is build stronger, be prepared, and remember that all the Islands of the Caribbean support you. As I have said before, it could happen to any of us.
My best to all,

- Dorian
  • By "Jed Lindblad" <jedsshed at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2019 08:53:46 -0400

Good morning. According to “The Closest Point of Approach” tool, Dorian passed 108.8 miles south of us at 7:00 AM producing a few showers and some gusty wind conditions. We are fine, still have power and are thankful for the little bit of rain Dorian has brought us so far.

My concern now is for our friends and neighbors east of here. The general consensus is that Dorian will increase in intensity due to more favorable conditions and could be a serious threat to the US and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, The Bahamas and the Eastern US.

Stay safe and keep a close eye on this storm.

Good Evening to all,
My kindly Canadian neighbour took this pic yesterday, it appears some of my
trees have survived the drought, thank goodness. He also checked my rain gauge,
and the Searocks have had 4 1/2 inches of rain since my last post. Carnival has
been jumping up mightily over the last week or so, and Real Deal won the big
boat race, so celebration at Sandy Ground. I do hope the storm gods stay
sleeping, but, if they wake up are we all ready? If not please prepare.

Good Evening All,
Yesterday my lovely caretaker Isiaih checked my rain gauge, We have had 2 inches in the last couple of days on the Searocks, bearing in mind we had only had half an inch since I left on 14th April, so welcome.
My compliments to Jane Higgins (St. Thomas) for highlighting the plight of the Dolphins. When Irma came in and destroyed the Dolphin pens in Anguilla, I said Hurrah, hopefully the dolphins were free, but not at all, they had moved them to St.Kitts before Irma arrived. Murphy's law I suppose.
Stay safe and prepared, Things look like they are hotting up.

Good Morning Everyone,
Nothing much to report from Anguilla except still dry dry dry.
I think your bird Frank might be a young Pearly Eyed Thrasher, they have a very rich chirrup and are bold and cheeky. I stand to be corrected though by anyone with better knowledge than I have. Also Isabel's Pulmeria we always called the Wild Frangipani, so am glad to know its proper name.

God Evening to Everyone who is  part of, or follows Stormcarib.
Start of another season, I hope we are all prepared, Hope I am, this is the first season since I built my house in 1989 that I actually have hurricane shutters on all my windows, also have a generator winterized ( if that is the right word) in my living room as  I thought it might go walk about if I left it in the garage. We have had NO RAIN on the Searocks, despite the pics from Antigua. It has been overcast but none of the wet stuff. We had rain like that (8 inches in 4 hours) a few years ago but that was in November not June.
I wish all the very best for the coming season,

I don't have any weather reports from Anguilla but hope there has been some rain, but just wanted to wish John Fuller well from afar.I don't know John personally except through Stormcarib but his mother was an old girlfriend of my father's way back when and I always stayed with her at The Lord Nelson Club in the old days when I flew through Antigua to Anguilla. Sadly I had to leave Anguilla last weekend and return to the North of England, I am feeling the cold it was only 34F when I landed in Paris, having left St Martin in 86F.
The rainfall on the Searocks for the whole of March and up to 14 April had only been .84 of an inch, I think they have had more rain in the west end of Anguilla but it won't have been much, also St Martin looked dry as a bone from the ferry going across.
I have had a wonderful 6 months in Anguilla, in fact I think the whole Island has had a good season, judging by the private jets and super yachts and the fact that one had to make a reservation every time in almost all of the restaurants. I was lucky enough to do 40 dives with the wonderful Dougie and Special 'D' Diving, and attach a pic of him and his boat at Dog Island.
The only sad thing is to say how terribly distressing it was to watch Notra Dame Cathedral burn on the TV,  I asked myself what national building burning here would make me cry like the French crowds were in Paris? A terrible tragedy.
I wish all a quiet Hurricane season and a great summer.
