- Last Day of Hurricane Season 2018

Nov. 30 -  Dear friends and followers of StormCarib, it‘s time to say goodbye until June 2019, God willing, if i’m still alive and kicking. We’re entering a very busy phase as I’m sure you are too. It’s been an interesting year. I’ve been receiving emails from some of you and I look forward to more emails in the future. If anything unusual happens weather wise, I will send an update. So, no news is good news. I wish you all a wonderful life, good cheer, a very Merry Christmas for those of you who celebrate this, or any other tradition, and a safe entry into the New Year. May God bless us, one and all.

- “More Active Than Predicted”
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>

Nov. 29- According to WU the 2018 Hurricane Season was more active than predicted. There were 15 name storms from ALBERTO to OSCAR. Is it really over? I saw one prediction that took it
all the way to the end of the official list. We fared much better than last year, that’s for sure. There’s still work to be done, especially repairing roofs. Construction work is booming whether it’s old or new structures. We are certainly grateful for a calmer season. We had the most rain during the first two weeks of this month. The tropical waves have died down, but yesterday I noticed one coming off the coast of Africa. Most likely harmless, however, there have been hurricanes in December. I found out today that the Triathalon this coming Sunday is a fundraiser for hurricane relief. It goes to show that relief is still needed. Tomorrow is the last day. That’s a mouthful. It can mean anything. Have a good night and may God bless us all.

- Everything BLUE !
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2018 19:41:52 -0400
Nov. 28 - We are so spoiled with this nice weather !  I wonder how long it’s going to last. It seems clear all around us judging from the satelitte imagery. The sky was so blue I coild not resist.
Blue also happens to be my favorite color. The Triathlon event is set for Sunday; we usually see the swimmers, from our porch,  diving into the water as we have breakfast. Then everyone get ready to “hit the road” and get down to the wharf before they get to shore! We live just 100 ft above sea level.  It’s a fun event, but a big inconvenience for the churches in the vicinity. C’est la vie! Have a good night. May God bless us all!

- Almost there!

  • Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2018 19:50:53 -0400
Nov. 27 - We had beautiful weather again today. No rain for a while now. That’s good! Our cisterns need maintenance work and that requires a dry spell if possible. This is the busiest time of the year! So much happening, and after an absence of the Triathlon, it’s back this weekend. People come from everywhere for that event, plus the winter folks are here, many visitors. It seems to be the perfect time, however, if they are hoping for a cooler day they might be out of luck; these past days it has been unusually hot. Glad I’m not participating! Have a good night. May God bless us all.

- Too hot for November..?
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2018 00:34:00 -0400
Nov. 26/27 - It was unusually hot. We would like cooler weather at this time, though it is hot weather that’s bringing the visitors away from the cold. So, let’s be happy and thankful that we are chosen as a vacation getaway. No need to worry about hurricanes at this time and there’s no bad weather in the near future. The weather is picture perfect at the moment. Come on down! May God bless us all.

- A Royal Day
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2018 00:02:28 -0400
Nov. 25 - A day fit for a King, or a Queen. That was today! We had a splendid time as we heard about the various activities, one of them being shopping.  We had fun just listening to them; they experienced the cold of winter and even though it’s not Winter as yet.  They made it back without any problems, but many others got stranded by  winter storm  Bruce.  Definitely looking like an active season. We usually get a bit of the chill around December and January. The sea is too cold for us locals, though some venture in anyway. The swim groups are amazing. Some swim at 4:30 a.m., some at 5:30, and some at 6:30 !  I don’t go in at all unless the sea is reasonably flat with just lapping waves at the shore. So there! Have a good night and may God bless us all richly.

- C L E A R !
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2018 00:09:07 -0400
Nov. 24 - After that early rain shower this morning, the rest of the day was sunny and very pleasant. We’re having a lot of visitors getting away from the cold on the mainland. Our girls returned today. Happy for the warm weather; they even went ice-skating, so that was a big deal. On another note, the Central Atlantic has another X; most likely nothing to be comcerned about. In a few days the hurricane season will be officially over and no one will be noticing what’s going on around the Atlantic. Let’s hope nothing creeps up on us! Have a good night and may God bless us all.

- Another One of those Days
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2018 18:48:17 -0400
Nov. 24 - What a beautiful day for a wedding if it were in St. Croix ! However, I find that a wedding is beautiful no matter the place, nor the weather. So to the bride of brides, I wish you a sunny, happy life, with ocassional showers to refresh the plants and trees and for those cozy moments that rainy weather inspires. May the Lord smile upon you and bless you and your beloved always.
Tonight there’s JUMP UP in the town along the boardwalk and streets. Stores are open late, food vendors and music everywhere in that vicinity. The 10 ft giants on stilts dance and have photos taken with tourists and locals alike. It’s a fun event. I wish I had a photo of that! Have a wonderful celebration and everyone a good night. May God bless us all.

Nov. 22- What a wonderful and exhausting day this has been. So nice to see so many volunteers turn out to help feed the homeless and lonely. Such enthusiasm! The weather was perfect! To that I want to add thank yous  to all the people who who have been emailing   me. It’s great to know that so many are reading the updates! I especially want to congratulate the Thomases in North Carolina on the wedding of their daughterand us all.

Nov. 21 - Our Weather is beautiful! Come on down! My kids are going to be in a deep freeze in the Northeast just on time for this celebration. They have no intention of going out other than to church across the street. The temps are going to be in the single digits with the wind. My grandson is taking care of roasting the turkey, the others the trimmings, and dessert, etc., and they plan a warm, cozy indoor day watching the Macy’s Parade, which is going to be the coldest on record!! We are gong to plan a cozy day as well with much needed rest and relaxation. Sounds good to me. I wish you all a wonderful, happy day whether you celebrate this holiday or not. May God bless us all.

- Welcome Rose Way Schooner !
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2018 00:09:36 -0400
Nov.20 - Today was a day of mixed emotions. My 12 yr old birthday granddaughter in NY celebrated her special day and we joined her from a distance. I also attended the funeral of a very dear friend. She will be missed. We were happy to see the return of the Rose Way Schooner from Boston! Tonight we have a new Governor! Let’s hope he keeps his promises. Lastly, the skies were cloudy after a morning of sunshine and it rained! I hope this is not going to be another rainy trend. Have a good night and May God bless us all

- A Perfect Day
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2018 00:03:54 -0400
Nov. 19-  One year ago, a week before Thanksgiving 2017, our electric power was restored. What a celebration that was !! We were thankful then for many reasons and we are thankful this year that we did not have to face another horrific hurricane season for there were many people not yet recovered from the last. We have so many things for which to be thankful. I am especially thankful that we have not had to deal with a tsunami. We see the signs in various locations, but if the emergency sirens were blown away by Hurricane Maria there would have been no way of knowing that we were about to be hit by powerful waves. To this day, I’m not sure if the sirens were replaced. This morning at the supermarket while I was at the register a man walked in and announced “Vote for #5 tomorrow!” He declared that the former governor didn’t  work enough at restoring the most important things and the sirens was one of them. So, tomorrow are the runoff elections. If most people feel as this man does, we should be seeing two new faces in alll the Federal offices’ walls at least for the next few years. Wish us well. Have a good night and may God bless us all.

- Sunny Sunday

Nov. 18 - What a gorgeous day! A real, true SUN Day! It went by quickly, but I’m sure the visitors and locals alike were able to enjoy every bit of the sun after so many recent rainy days. I’m happy to report that the X in the Central Atlantic vanished. However, there’s what seens like a messy situation to our east, moving this way. Late afternoon I was able to capture the glow of the setting sun. It is so round it looks like the sun itself, but it’s only the glow. I’m posting also the current temp provided by the cute pup of the Weather Pup App, and one of our lizard friends this evening. I hope it was a great day for you also. Have a good night and may God bless us all.

- Beautiful Day for a Wedding
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2018 23:24:26 -0400
Nov. 17 - This was a completely rainless day. Very unusual! Glorious sunshine, a gentle breeze, smiles all around. A happy day indeed for the couple getting married on a tropical island. It couldn’t be better. To my great surprise, the famous steel pan artist Bill Bass a good friend of ours, was playing the music together with another fine musician who played the trumpet. It couldn’t be better.     I was there getting things ready in the Church, my parish, but I felt like part of the celebration. The joy was tangible. Now getting back to the reality of the season, there is another “X” in the Central Atlantic. In the satelite imagery it looks like a little fireball. So far it’s not of any major concern, but since the hurricane season is not over, it should be monitored by those in it’s immediate vicinity. We look forward to more sunny days. Have a good night and may God bless us all.

Nov. 16- It rained again! More like quick heavy downpours. It can be sunny one moment and pouring the next. Definitely not a good day to hang out laundry. My granddaughter just landed in NY and is all excited because she saw snow from the plane.! They got 6 inches from AVERY yesterday! That’s a lot of snow! I hope it’s not going to be a rough Winter! Our storms numbered more than was expected. Well, our season is officially closing at the end of the month. Have a good night and may God bless us all.

- Power Outage: So what’s New!
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2018 20:22:48 -0400
Nov. 15 - It was just a few days before Thanksgiving Day 2017 when power was restored in our vicinity since Hurricane MARIA impacted us on September 18/19.  Now we reminisce on how it was then and after. The strange thing about this power outage is that the weather was nice and quiet since the heavy downpours this morning and that at only 20% chance of rain! I was was in the midst now of baking some cookies to send to NY and for my granddaughter who is traveling alone for the first time, as a comfort treat, when POOF we were plunged into darkness. That was an hour ago. The rest of the cookies are waiting unbaked on the kitchen counter. We shall soon find out how widespread is this outage and why. Our kids in the Northeast expect a very cold winter this year. This first winter storm AVERY has opened an early door to what could be an active winter. All we can do is take it a day at a time and enjoy, and do the best we can with it. May God bless us all.

- Drying Out!
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2018 00:26:40 -0400
Nov. 14 - Today the sun was shining in all it’s glory! What a difference from yesterday! It was sooo nice that I decided to hang out the clothes to waft in the gentle breeze. It was during my siesta I awoke to the very familiar sound of rain! Rain! I wanted jump up take the clothes off the line quickly. No use, they were soaked and I would get soaked too. Well, so much for wafting in the breeze! However, the long forecast is for mostly sunny weather. Now, I’m more concerned about the travel weather in the northeast. Winter Storm AVERY is going to make life miserable for my loved ones who live in 80 degree temp every day, that is, except for my grandson now studying in Baltimore. They are all getting together in NY for Thanksgiving. I just hope AVERY is not too rough. I had my share of snow and ice. Well, have a good night and think St. Croix- Paradise! May God bless us all.

  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2018 23:14:58 -0400
Nov. 13 - Have we ever seen so much rain outside of a storm? I think we had our six inches especially from 5 p.m. on. My granddaughter declared that the house shook with one big thunder! And she was in the shower at that time! She must’ve shrieked! It had been non-stop lightning and thunder. Truly the face of a name storm. It was so nice to see a post from our dear weatherman Dave. You must’ve have really been “under the weather”. Hope you’re over the worst and will see us through the rest of this season. As for the rain, it stopped a while ago, but according to WU it will pick up again at 4:30 a.m. They are amazingly accurate! Will the schools be able to open tomorrow...??? Earlier, The Weather Channel had a flash flood watch in effect for us until Thursday afternoon, I was told. We shall see. Have s good night and may God bless us all.

Nov. 12- I was so surprised to learn about this system! There’s a good chance it can become a Tropical Storm soon. My daughter, a teacher, said at school that a Tropical Depression is coming tomorrow. There’s suppose to be an annual outdoor event and are concerned. So, they have it classified as a Depression already. As Gert said we don’t need more rain and especially not in such an amount as a storm can bring. The ground is so saturated there’s no way but flooding. We’ve had a couple of weeks of constant rain, often quite heavy. This all comes at a time when we should have empty cisterns to repair a leak. To think that not too long before everything was drying out. We certainly did not expect so much rain at this time. Let’s keep an eye on this Invest and take the proper precautions. May God bless us all.

- Calmer Days
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2018 23:33:00 -0400
Nov. 10- These last two days have been calmer and drier. Everyone’s cisterns must full to overflowing. Our situation requires empty cisterns for the maintenance man to clean and repair where if’s needed. The water is leaking onto our garage floor. Our road is also damaged; not as smooth as before. Everything is growing, the larger of the coconut clusters’ down but still hanging in there.’ Now they’re more easily reached. There are advantages and
disadvantages in everything even in the weather.

- What a Weather Difference a day Makes
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2018 21:26:18 -0400
Nov. 7- It was mostly sunny today, allowing everything to dry out. Dark clouds threatened in the afternoon/ evening, but no rain, until now,  it’s pouring again. Yesterday’s deluge damaged our road for the second time, and yesterday’s satellite imagery indicated an abundance of moisture to the east of the island chain. It still looks very menacing perhaps why we still have a high percentage of rain for the next days. That can change, of course. Yesterday there was not only rain run off  , there was election run off, a 1% difference sends us back to the polls on the 20th. God help us and bless us all.

  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2018 21:22:51 -0400
Nov. 6 - Election Day Deluge! What could it possibly mean? The hurricane season is more than hurricanes, it’s days of rain and flooding in some zones, and landslides, and more! Today was the height of the past rainy days. It’s enough to send visitors packing! That is, unless they like RAIN. It almost seems as if this is going to last much longer. Well, isn’t this better than s full blown Cat 5 ??  It sure is. I for one just love to hear the rain on the roof, but I’m concerned about the houses with tarp covered roofs and especially the folks inside. This is the wettest November I recall. What’s next ?? May God bless us all.

  • Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2018 22:57:31 -0400
Nov. 5 - What a rainy November so far! How can we get our cisterns cleaned and repaired. ! What a dilemma! We like rain, sometimes we really need rain, but not now thanks. Well, that’s not how it works. So, we’ll have to figure this one out eventually. In the meanwhile we have water leaking out on the garage flloor, and the Cistern maintenance man is waiting for the word GO ! Thank God for small problems! Well, looking at the long forecast it looks as if the rain is here to stay. I hope it pours on the parade on Sunday morning. They refused to have it later so they are going to disturb three churches along the route. What are we to do.! Have a good night and may God bless us all.

- Sun Less Sunday
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2018 23:02:15 -0400
Nov. 4  - It was another gray day. Stormyish in the morning, more stable later. For tomorrow there’s a 60% chance of rain. How wonderful it is not to be tracking a storm! I hope we don’t see any more of those this year! At this time last year we were still without power. We had to buy bags of ice to keep our daily perishables from perishing. We had no idea when we would be restored. They were working section by section. All the men could do when we asked them was to smile. They were working on it. We had to have a lot of parience and stay calm and hope and pray for a normal life again soon. I meditated on the fact that there are people in world who had to live like that all the time and in addition had little or nothing to eat. We were fortunate this was only temporary. Have a good night and may God bless us all.

- Rainy Day
  • By Isabel Cerni <isabelcerni at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 3 Nov 2018 20:48:36 -0400
Nov. 3 - Early this morning WU forecast that rain would start at 11:30 a.m..  It did   and has been on and off all day even peppered with lightning and thunder this evening. There’s still a 70% chance of precipitation and “thunderstorms will continue”. At the moment it’s quiet. Unfortunately, for the visitors the forecast for the next week does not look good as far as daytime activities go. Night activities are different. Currently Brian’s Marina Bar/Restaurant is lively; the music floats up to our house. It’s always pleasant except when they have kareoke on Tuesday’s with some blood curdling sounds which are enough to make a dog howl or a kitty run for cover. Just kidding! I admire people who have the nerve to try singing a favorite song. Right now the tree frogs are having the time of their lives. Have a good night and may God bless us all.

Nov.. 2 - Day 155 of the hurricane season. With only a few weeks to go, people are wondering if this is it. Can we let down our guard a bit? Perhaps, all I know is that Hurricane LENNY came around the middle of Nov. we can get other things. For example today was strange Weather day by the looks of it.
It got so stormy in the afternoon, unbelievable!!  It did notrain here; it  poured at school. The middle of the island gets the most rain. There is a medium to high percentage of rain for the next days. We shall see. In the msanwhile, let’s enjoy each day as it comes. May God bless us all.

Our black kitty was kind of nervous this evening. I wonder why. Just hope everyone gets home safe. The weather seems to be calmer in general. Oct. 30 - Another 30 days and the hurricane season is officially over! However, if the catastrophic flooding in Trinidad & Tobago is any example (see their photos) ; that was caused by a non-tropical system. In other words, we should always be prepared for any disaster. This evening we saw the islands to our north clearly. I managed  to capture one moment before it passed. Have a good night. May God bless us all.

Oct. 29. - Soon and Very Soon this Hurricane Season will be over. Still another 4 weeks of official time, but a lot can happen yet. Is OSCAR the last of the season? We hope so. Thankfully it is heading away from the mainland. The East Coast saw drenching rain, gusty winds and lots of flooding over the weekend from the Nor’easter. Then it’s going to be snow and ice and bitter cold. No, I think I rather deal with the occasional storm followed by sunshine and warmth. Photos today include OSCAR graphics, tiny baby mespels on the tree, and Shoys beach. Have a good night and may God bless us all.
