- Very Dry
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2019 15:43:33 +0000
Greetings to Everybody,
Beautiful month so far in Anguilla but very very dry on the Searocks, .61 of an
inch of rain so far. We do however have one of the worlds top super yachts in
at the moment, the sailing version (with carbon fibre sails) of the ‘A’ ,
designed by Philip Stark and owned by a Russian oligarch whose name I can’t
spell. She is the most extraordinary looking thing, see pic, almost like an
armoured Chinese junk, but strangely gorgeous as well.
Diving has been fantastic, a lot of sharks around at the moment and I saw a big
pod of Humpback Wales go by about a week ago, blowing and breaching and
generally behaving as though life was good.
Congratulations to the Trinidadians responsible for the stained glass costumes
of the winning troop at carnival, they were simply stunning.
Hope you have a great day.

- February 2019 Rain
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2019 21:10:26 +0000
A very good evening to followers of Stormcarib,
February has been a lovely time in Anguilla, plenty of visitors but very little rainfall, only .83 of an inch for the whole month, not nearly enough for those of us who rely upon our cisterns and the heavens. As usual, a beautiful evening, current temp is 78F in my house, with a fresh breeze. The seas have been up and down this month, but the diving has been wonderful, alot of old friends on the dive boat, and many beautiful photos taken by the brain to save for old rainy days. I attach a pic I think I have put on Stormcarib before, but the turtle is so stunning and I am with it.
Have a greart evening,
JH

- January Rain
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>

Wishing everybody a happy and peaceful February, the rainfall on the Searocks has been 1.65 inches for January, not enough but better than less.
While diving with Dougie the other day we saw a scorpion fish, I haven't seen one for at least 5 years so it was a treat, see pic.
My cousins arrived this afternoon from northern Vermont, I wish I had a pic of their smiles as they got off the ferry at Blowing Point.
current temp is 75F and I wish all a good night.

Another sparkling evening in Anguilla, my cistern is full, still got a week
before I have to pay my electric bill, diving tomorrow with the wonderful
Dougie of Special D Diving. What more can you ask for? Hope everyone else is as
blessed as I am at nearly 73!
My best to all who are a part of or follow Stormcaib and my thanks and
appreciation to Gert and Dave, who make this website possible.

P.S. come on down and help us recover from last years hurricanes, we are coping
(somewhat) but need all the help we can get.

The beauty of this evening is amazing, and we are only just beginning, I am not
sure I will make the eclipse, I will try, but as the pics show, right now is
magic. I feel so privileged to have been able to see the best our world has to
offer. Enjoy it everyone if you are not covered by cloud.

First of all I would like to wish everyone a happy, peaceful, hurricane less and prosperous 2019.
The December rainfall on the Searocks was 2.54 inches, it is a beautiful day, strong breeze, blue ocean with quite alot of whitecaps, golden sunshine and the temp on my porch is 81F. I am so glad to be here.
Best wishes from Anguilla,

- November rain
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2018 21:22:36 +0000
Good Evening to All,
Today is supposed to be the end of Hurricane Season 2018, lets so hope so. The
current temp is 80f on the gallery, and the total rain fall for November here
on the Searocks has been 9.98 inches, wonderful! The last few days have been
still and hot with only a slight breeze, I think the system north in the
Atlantic is sucking all our trade winds away.
The pic I have attached is an odd one taken of the reflection of the view in my
sliding doors, so the fish that you see on my wall are inside the house. A
different angle perhaps.
Have a great night.
My best to everybody,
JH
Searocks
P.s. don’t forget white rabbits in the morning, so that we will all have a good
Christmas (maybe Santa Claus will put a private jet in my stocking!)
Chance would be a fine thing.

- Armistice (Veterans) Day, and more rain
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2018 21:31:47 +0000
Good Evening all,
Bearing in mind I am not guaranteed internet tomorrow I would like to post the following:

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them.

When you go home tell them of us and say
For your tomorrow we gave our today.

Tomorrow at the 11th hour of the 11th day, of the 11th month 100 years after the
armistice of the First World War, we will remember them.

It is a grey and rainy evening in Anguilla and we have had, as of last night 6.10 inches of rain in the last week.
My best to everybody,
JH

- Thunder and lightning
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2018 23:25:59 +0000
Since 02 November we have had 2.93 inches of rain, and last night the most
violent thunder and lightning storm, less than 3 miles from the Searocks, I
counted in between the lightning and thunder, had one pillow over my head,
another below and the sheets tight over my eyes as the lightning was so bright,
it lit up the whole night. Needless to say, small brown dog in typical Border
Terrorist fashion took no notice at all.
In hopes of a quieter night this evening.

- Rain today
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2018 20:36:05 +0000
Having arrived here, pale, tired, exhausted, just over a week ago, with very
hot weather and a hardly noticeable breeze coming from the north west, no doubt
due to Oscar sucking everything away from the Caribbean. Today, we have had
nearly an inch of rain (much needed by me, as when I arrived, everyone said all
the cisterns were full, but to my horror when I measured mine it was only a
quarter full - panic of course). I have now had 9 great nights of sleep, I am
not so pasty, the wonderful Ishlyn has come to my porch and painted my toenails
blue and silver, I was diving with Dougie yesterday for an hour off Sandy
Island with some very nice visitors from Atlanta and South Carolina, I have
local fruit and Californian wine in my fridge, and the world seems a different
place, also the breeze has gone back to the north east and is strong and
refreshing. This,
my friends, is the power of Anguilla. I feel a different person. All around
Anguilla I see signs of rebuilding and recovery from hurricane Irma. Come down
if you can and refresh. The current temperature on my balcony is 82 degrees.
The picture I send you is Lake Ullswater in the English Lake District, taken 2
weeks ago, and the other is sunset here last night. Have a great weekend, and
with hopes that the Storm God has gone back to sleep.

- Fwd: AXA today
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>

Subject: AXA today
Good Afternoon to All,
Small Brown Dog  and I arrived back home to Anguilla on Wednesday evening to the light of a huge spectacular full golden moon, the ocean was dead calm (still is) and it is pretty hot, very light breeze, but lush and green and my range gauge said we have had 3.80 inches of rain until today in October and the temp on the balcony is 87 degrees. So, wonderful after a very long trip from a cold and dismal Europe.
A little mention to all the poor people badly flooded in Trinidad and Tobago and various other places. In a past life I was an Off-Road Driving Instructor, and if you have to drive through a flooded road make sure the water is not above your knees and there is no one in front of you who could stall and stop you, go through steady, 2nd gear probably and keep going. What you want to do is create a bow wave in front of the vehicle which will mean you will keep your engine dry, if you stop you will get water up your exhaust and you will splutter to a stop. Maybe this might help.
It is so good to be back.
My best regards to everyone,
JH

- Too much information
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>

I don't think I have ever seen so much information on half of the world on a  meteorological map. There are hurricanes or typhoons heading to so many places on the globe.
First of all I don"t think Isaac is finished with Dominica/Quadalope/Martinigue. Second my son is, as I write, is driving from Charleston S.C.to Jacksonville Florida to avoid Florence. Thirdly The Philippines are bracing themselves against a major typhoon. Hawaii is dealing with a small typhoon, but not what they are used to or prepared for, and fourthly am I right in thinking Helene is heading for me, here in the north of England?
I wish good luck and good wishes to everyone wherever you are.
Kind regards and stay safe,

Oh Dear, I have been avidly watching the developing storms/hurricanes rolling west across the Atlantic and not much I see or read looks encouraging, I can feel the jitters from here in the northern UK. There is not much I can do about my  house in Anguilla, still not fully repaired after Irma, but I send my very best wishes to everyone to stay safe and prepared. Who ever said that life was fair!  The world seems out of sync with itself, look at what poor Japan has just been through in the last month or so.
My gratitude to Dave and Gert for Stormcarib, and I feel privileged to be a tiny part of it. Please support Stormcarib if you can.
Everything crossed for all of us.

- STORM 92 & TS HELENE - ANGUILLA
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Sat, 8 Sep 2018 10:41:43 -0400

Just a quick update for Anguilla.  All of the models are pretty much in agreement now that these 2 storms will pose no threat to us.  TD 9 should pass as a TS or Cat 1 hurricane (may intensify) well south of us on Friday or Sat, (approx. 15° N – Guadalupe/Dominica area), while Helene is forecast to head NW into the open Atlantic and will be well north of 18.3° by the weekend  And good news is there appears to nothing brewing on the African coast.  As always, continue checking with NHC but nothing further on these 2 storms unless something changes that might affect AXA.  Cheers,

Appears the drought is over in Anguilla.  Had 1.15 in Wed. and 1.36 in. since midnight today – and still raining.  Gives us 4.18 for the month.  Each day is the most daily rain we have had all year.  Picture from Best Buy West of Frangipani/Meads Bay, Anguilla.

- WIND - BUT LITTLE RAIN
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2018 09:43:04 -0400

Few little showers overnight but totaled only 0.08 in.  Wind is 14-18 mph with a gust this morning of 31.  We really need the rain but not looking good for the rest of the day.  Doppler shows most of the rain to our south and falling apart before getting anywhere near us.

- HURRICANE BERYK & ANGUILLA
  • By "Steve Donahue" <steve at anguilla-weather.com>
  • Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2018 09:23:31 -0400

Only change from yesterday – TS Beryl is now hurricane Beryl. (Humm – remember 80 mph Bertha, 8 July, 1996?)  This means it will be a cat 1 hurricane (MAYBE cat 2) when it encounters strong wind shear at 50 W degrees and will quickly weaken from there.  But not much concern for AXA – will pass over Dominica to our south late Sunday/early Monday and pass about 170 miles to our SSE as a possible weak TS or less.  It’s a rather small storm with TS force winds currently extending out only about 35-50 mi. to the N.  And because it’s so small, probably nothing more than a passing shower for us.  Could be some rough surf on the south facing beaches.

Continue to monitor at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ but noting further unless major change in track.  Cheers,

- INVEST 95L & ANGUILLA
  • By "Steve Donahue" <steve at anguilla-weather.com>
  • Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2018 12:24:08 -0400

Invest 95 L in the far eastern Atlantic will likely form into a tropical depression shortly and then a possible tropical storm in the next few days.  However, the system will encounter very strong wind shear once it reaches 50 degrees west Saturday, and all models call for it to then start to weaken.  Could bring widespread showers/thunderstorms once it reaches the islands, but forecasted to cross over the islands to our south.  Right now, a slim possibility of widespread shower/thunderstorm for Anguilla Sunday night/Monday, but not looking good for some much needed rain at this point.

As always, keep an eye out on this system (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) – especially over the weekend – but no further updates unless the forecast changes.

Cheers,

- April Rain, roughly
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard2 at gmail.com>

Good Evening all,
The rainfall on the Searocks in April was roughly .95 of an inch, my kind
Canadian neighbour read my rain gauge but I am not exactly sure of the dates.
Here in the UK everyone is in wedding fever, I wish Prince Harry and Meghan
Markle the very best and much happiness. Goodness knows it must be a hard life
in the media eye all the time.
I attach, just for interest 2 pics, one of our native Fell Ponies sleeping in
the sun, and I can’t resist showing the small brown dog (Border Terrier) in her
natural habitat.
Have a great evening,

Good Evening to all of the Stormcarib Family,
Sadly last week I had to leave my warm happy house in Anguilla and return to the mud, rain and sleet  in the north of England. There is still snow on the tops of the hills, and they say here, that when some snow sticks it is waiting for more. I do hope not. My kindly neighbour on the Searocks has checked my rain gauge and says there was 70mm in it, Witch I think is 2.35 inches, we desperately needed it.,
After 2 car rides, 2 taxi rides, 2 ferries, I transatlantic flight and 5 trains small brown dog and I got back. I attach a pic of small brown dog surveying the white cliffs of Dover.
My best to all,
