- Happy Easter
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2018 15:06:06 +0100
I hope it is a Happy Easter Sunday for Everyone everywhere. The seas have settled down a bit and I hope to be able to dive tomorrow.  It is the Festival Del Mar in Island Harbour and there are alot of festivities, fishing contests, boat races, swimming races and cooking competitions along with plenty of rum and music from local bands.
It is still very very dry the total rainfall for March was .30 of an inch, didn't even settle the dust.
I attach a pic showing that even the cement trucks did not escape the wrath of Irma, they are still running though. Also the sunset in the pool.
My best to all,
JH

- Beauty of Anguilla:s night sky
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2018 23:44:31 +0000
I had a lovely glass of wine with good friends at Everette's Beach Bar in Island Harbour this evening, when I got home I watered my thirsty plants then sat down and looked at the sky. Polaris (the North Star) was straight in front of me and then I saw either a satellite or the Space station move from East to west across the heavens, between it and the fire flies it was spectacular, here on the north side of Anguilla we have no light pollution and the stars are wonderful.
The VERY high seas from the Cape Cod storm are gradually lying down but the ocean still looks like a milkshake, so I think no diving for a bit.
A great Evening to all.

P.S. present temp in my apartment is 77F, and we have clear blue skies for the last few days and no rain.

good evening everybody,
I have to report that yesterday morning I was diving at Dog Island, we had a
lovely dive, saw sharks rays turtles and queen trigger fish, spotted groupers
and the like. However yesterday afternoon the wind changed from east to west
and today at about midday the ocean came up with a vengeance, i have never seen
30ft waves breaking where the deep blue of deep water becomes green before the
reefs. The pic doesn’t really show it, but the waves were breaking completely
over Little Scrub, going up 75-100ft high. It has been amazing. The wind has
turned more to the north now, we shall see what tomorrow brings. I hear this
storm has given Cape Cod 90 MPH winds.
A goodnight to all,

- February rainfall
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2018 23:48:23 +0000
Good evening to everyone,
There is the most beautiful golden orange full moon rising above Island Harbour at the the moment and soon it will be shedding it's light all over the ocean. We were supposed to have a class B boat race today but it was cancelled due to the big ground sea we are experiencing, the ocean looks flat calm, and I even saw a pod of Humpbacks go by 2 days ago, breaching and blowing, but the rollers are enormous. good for surfers but not for divers.  I am no metreologist (spelling chk not available) but I have been colder both on and under the water this year than I have ever been in Anguilla before and I just wonder if the 2 Cat 5 and other smaller hurricanes we had have sucked some of the warmth out of the Caribbean, the underwater temp at 71ft was 75F last Monday and I know hurricanes are the way our planet cools itself down. Comments please from all you experts out there?
The rainfall on the Searocks in February has been 1.85 inches, but it has been very dry and clear for the last few days. I could see St. Barts, Saba, Statia, St. Martin of course, and St Kitts clearly today which is quite unusual.
I wish everyone a great evening,
JH

- Life on the sea in Anguilla
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2018 00:30:01 +0000
i apologize beforehand. Tonights report is not about weather in Anguilla, though I will touch on that later, it is about life on a small island between the Caribbean and the Atlantic and the sea and ocean that it lies therein.
In the last week, I have witnessed two rescues. Last Saturday we were diving with Dougie at Anguillita ( a tiny island to the west end of Anguilla). It is a lovely dive but the best bit was a large school of Tarpon, that game fishermen love to catch, huge beautiful silver bone fish.. On our way home we came around a point and Dougie said 'whats going on here' in front of us was a sunken small dinghy, 4 empty gas tanks floating as well as a cool box, one life jacket and one flip-flop. We retrieved them all, minus the flip-flop, and towed them and the distressed owner back to Sandy Ground.
Then this evening when I finally sat down with a glass, I watched one fishing boat come in over the Atlantic horizon, watched it coast into Island Harbour, then saw another following , about a couple of miles out, it suddenly stopped, so I picked up the binns  and thought they may have been trolling and had caught something, a wahoo perhaps, so went and watered my trees and basil etc., thinking that I will ke ep an eye in case they need help, it was getting dusk and the clouds were turning from pink and gold to grey.  When I came back they had drifted maybe a mile west with the current, but there was a smaller boat helping who eventually got a tow rope on and with effort and in rough seas towed them into Island Harbour.
The seas are still rough, strong winds and the temp at present is 78F.
My best to you all for a good night,
JH

- January 18 Rain
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 6 Feb 2018 18:26:13 +0000
Good Afternoon to you all wherever you are,
The following is the total amount of rainfall on the Searocks for the month of January 2018, 2.22 inches.  It has been very blustery weather on Anguilla for the last month, high seas, squally showers and an unprecedented amount of rainbows (see pic), great sleeping weather, but not always perfect for the beach seekers. I can't believe a whole month of 2018 has gone already. Anguilla is doing well, I for example have power, internet and landline, but I think I am one of the most fortunate. Alot of people are struggling because all the big hotels are closed so very few jobs in the meantime and no money. A good friend of mine for example, who usually has a full time job at Cuisinart, is cooking a barbecue in Island Harbour 2 days a week to try and make ends meet, her mother hasn't a job either because Arawak is "all mash up" as they say, and so on. I think St Martin is worse though.  Visitors are trickling in, but still problems with flights etc.
I wish everyone a great evening,
JH and the small brown dog mark II (who is a swimming fiend)

I can't begin to describe to you all how beautiful Anguilla looks tonight. there is a silver almost full moon making the ocean shimmer over Island Harbour (I believe it is full tomorrow night) the temperature is 75F in my house and we have had nearly three quarters of an inch of rain in the last couple of days so the foliage is happy and sparkling., I started 2018 with a lovely dive on Deep South reef with Dougie and friends from New York, Texas and Canada. It is a joy to be here. I wish all and sundry a great 2018, and hope and pray for a less dramatic year than we have just had.
My best wishes to everyone who follows Stormcarib (thank you Gert and Dave) .

with Small Brown Dog from Serenity to Elodias and back, we both had a swim, the
water is gorgeous. Still no internet so it is catch as catch can, but most of
the restaurants have it so one can always check ones emails while Helping the
economy! We had .65 of an inch of rain last Saturday night.

After a traumatic time with KLM small brown dog and I finally got here 48 hours
late. Anguilla is doing pretty well, but I am luckier than most living in the
east, the West End is still struggling, no electric yet. We have no phones or
internet yet and don’t know when. I have a kindly Canadian neighbour who has
lent me his magic chip so that I can report in. There are basic groceries and
the banks are operating although I had to stand in line for over an hour. St
Martin airport is pretty desperate, immigration and baggage collection in a
marquee on the tarmac. GB ferries running well. Weather is gorgeous, if you can
come on down with some dollars to help.

It is very cold here, below freezing tonight, doesn't suit me at all I am afraid, but in a week I will be back in Anguilla, the good lord and KLM willing and I shall report what I find.

- POSSIBLE SEVERE WEATHER MID MONTH
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2017 12:06:14 -0400

I know – you figured after Irma you wouldn’t hear from me until next year.  Sorry.  There is a very REMOTE possibility of tropical development in the Caribbean area the week 12 November, with it POSSIBLY affecting our area around the 19th.  But again – this only a REMOTE possibility – 2 of the more reliable models are forecasting this possibility but none of the others.

So over the next 2 weeks, don’t just assume the season is over – keep an eye on the NHC website.

Good Evening to Everybody,
I have nothing to add on Anguilla, and there is plenty on the internet regarding progress. What I did want to say is, there is an amazing Jamaican lady who lives about 15 miles away from me in Shap, Cumbria. She came to the UK in the 1970s to help her daughter Doreen who is 87. Her name is Amy Johnson and she was I10 yesterday, she was counting her cards from the Queen and when the reporter said she was 110 she put her head back and roared with laughter "Good Lord I am 110" and laughed again. She is amazing and epitomizes the spirit of the Caribbean. If you want to see more look up www.bbbc.co.uk/cumbria.
As an aside, I take back my frustrations of my last post, KLM has put me on the direct flight from Amsterdam to St Martin on 1st  December, so I will be home soon.
Have a great night if you can.
All the best,

Good Evening Everyone.
This evening the wind is howling, the leaves are flying, plus a few branches as well, I have skylights here in The Little Bay Barn and if I have them open even a crack Small brown dog and I are covered in Oak, Beech, sycamore and Ash leaves in a few moments, the river is up, almost over it"s banks, this is Ophelia in the Lake District, I think the gusts are only 70-80 MPH, but they are certainly making their presence felt., but nothing like Irma or Maria we would just call this just a rather wild and stormy night..
I am in a state of extreme frustration, I have been checking the flights daily since 06 Sept, and I have a ticket booked 01 Dec from manchester to Amsterdam to Curacao to St Martin, and today I checked Juliana airport"s arrivals and saw that an Air France plane arrived direct from Paris Charles de Gaul at 1.45PM on time, but will AF tell me when they are flying direct, will they Hell!! No direct flights until they know not when. aaaarrgh
I will just have to wait, aaargh again.
In the meantime, I wish you all a good night.

my vantage pro 2 stopped working during Irma at 105 mph. Many here in Anguilla
are trying to find out max sustained winds/max gusts. If anyone has the info
for Anguilla/St. Martin love to get the word out. I HEARD 175 and 205 gusts but
that has never been confirmed. My weather station is up and running again but
anguilla-weather.com is onl updated when I am running generator and on desktop.
Supplies are slowly starting to arrive
but slowly. Ferries are up and running to SXM and planes will be arriving there
starting today. Still some lines at banks for cash as
very few places take credit cards but gas lines have dropped way off. ANGLEC
says hope to have power island wide by end of year. Since I am pretty much at
the end of the line in the West End, guess it will be a long wait.

- 1 MONTH IRMA UPDATE
  • By Steve Donahue <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Sat, 7 Oct 2017 09:57:20 -0400
Sea Bourne Airlines has started flights in to Anguilla from Puerto Rico -
believe 3 days a week. St. Martin airport is scheduled to open 10 Oct. and
several ferries are now offering service from the Blowing Point Police Station
(the ferry terminal is gone) to the police station at the Simpson Bay bridge.
Assume shuttle is provided to airport. Several more hotels have announced they
will not be opening until the spring, including Zemi Beach. Best bet for
tourist is to book a villa. Villa managers will not be renting any villa not
ready for guests and they know the up to date situation. Schools have opened,
most of the gas lines are gone and grocery stores are becoming well stocked.
Ferryboat has opened along with Tasty's and lots of roadside stands. Electric
is slow because of the very large number of downed poles, but now restored out
several miles from the Valley. Heard electric will be restored to the east end
as there was much less damage there than in the west. Cash is easier to get at
ATMs but there are still limits in place. Big problem continues to be access
to building suPplies but there appears to be a large quantity of concrete
available. And the beaches are still beautiful. Cheers,

- We're in St John USVI
  • By Gianna <denisgianna at yahoo.com>

Tortola is right next to us...four short miles.
Like Tortola, St John suffered major damage. We have 750 beautiful villas, and 95% need repair. Some are roofless, some, like the one in which we took refuge, have every single window and door blown out and substantial water damage. Irma brought winds of 250 mile/hour with stronger twisters to 270 miles/hour. We have sketchy Internet areas now, but no power except for the lucky few with a working generator. I say working because, not being used and poorly serviced, some quit right after Irma and are now silent. Water damage from Maria is extensive, particularly because Irma opened grooves and weakened or tore fixtures. Food and gas were scarce or non-existent for the first five days after Irma, but this torture was prolonged by Maria, that took out our only source of provisions: Puerto Rico.

US organizations shuttled food and water by helicopter from Puerto Rico until it went down. St Thomas airport was out of commission until last week, with small planes turned upside down on the tarmac, so a Navy ship was stationed out in the ocean for a while. Private organizations such as Bloomberg set up clinics and donated money and equipment. FEMA set up a shelter by a (heavily damaged) school and is serving meals. Cruz Bay is a boating cemetery. One hundred and three boats sheltered in Hurricane Hole in Coral Bay. Only eight survived. Coral By is located the closest to Tortola and it will take six months before they regain electricity. I saw a picture of Jost VanDike, BVI taken from the air. The island is bare and all homes are destroyed. The US Coast guard evacuated a number of people from it right after Irma.

Let me know if you need more. Ask for specifics.

Gianna

Good Evening to Everyone,
Gert has asked all correspondents to update circumstances on their Island, as most of you will know I am not there, Steve, Jed and Kelvin have been doing an excellent job and all I can report is how personally I have been affected and encouraged by my Angullian friends and neighbours. My friend Ozzie (Daddy) Harrigan has said " come back Joanie, I have a generator for you, don't worry we will look after you." My lovely Dominican special firearms policeman whom I lend my apartment to when I am away, and who I talked to today because I have been so worried about his family in Dominica, who have lost everything and are living in a shelter, but are alive and OK. He told me he has gas for cooking, no damage in the apartment, and something I had forgotten, I put a gravity feed tap from the cistern in the garage, so he has water, he can boil to drink, he can flush the toilet and can fill a bucket and pour it over him for a shower and he has tilly lamps for light, he is fine he says. Incidentally he did also say, no looting as such in Anguilla.
Every time I call and make contact with Anguilla, I get off the phone encouraged and inspired by the kindness, resilience and spirit of the people.
I shall return with my small brown dog as soon as Air France and GB Express can transport me.
I wish as good an evening as you can have to everybody, fool moon tomorrow night, I believe, enjoy it for me, we are covered with rain and mud, hail and clouds from remnants of Lee and Maria.

It's now been 3 weeks since Irma and things are moving along. We have cell
service and 3G internet with FLOW pretty much island wide. Digicel was down
for about 2 weeks but has now set up portable towers. Gas seems to be readily
available, but lines are still long at banks and ATMs - and especially for
money orders at Post Offic. Several places - including Best Buy and Post Office
are now taking credit cards. Biggest problem is building supplies. Most of ours
came from Puerto Rico but now they are keeping it themselves. That leaves us
with Miami. I'm being told T111 for replacing my roof maybe 2-3 week wait.
Lots of donated stuff being provided to anyone in need by churches, gov't and
individuals. My wife and AARF ARE PROVIDING FOOD for dogs and cats as needed.
All in all, things are moving along but it will be a long haul. Here in the
West End probably 2-3 months for power - but connections have now moved out
several miles from the power plant.

Communications are slowly coming back along with power. As of yesterday, we
have about 6 percent back. Our utility company has been concentrating on The
Valley (which is our main hub) and are currently branching out to the east and
west ends of the island.
Although it may seem like a long time since 5 September, our guys are doing
great considering the massive amount of damage we received. It took several
days just to clear the power poles and trees off the main roads so traffic
could flow again.
I'll soon be able to upload some "before and after" pics, but for now, just 3
from my phone.
The first is of the old Pump House. It dated back to WWII when Anguilla
exported salt to the refinery on Aruba. For years it was transformed into a
very popular night spot for both locals and tourists.... Now just a heap. Since
this pic, all the debris has been cleared and I am sure she'll be up and
running again!
The other two shows you that metal roofing can't take 185 mph winds....
Anguilla Strong!
More later,

I received the following from Cara at GB Ferries via Joanie Howard:

Our vessels were safely secured for the hurricane and so did not sustain any major damage.  Just some broken glass windows from flying debris but that is the least.  We are ready to resume operations between the islands as soon as the ports are functioning again both here and on SXM.

All our families were affected but we thank God for spared life.

Our (GB) base headquarters in the Valley was severely damaged and so the office is not functional but we hope to have it up and running for October. In the meantime, we communicate via our phones.

We anticipate Anguilla to be restored to full functionality within the next few months.  From all reports, we did not fare as badly as the other islands which were hit by Irma.

We thank God that the majority of our housing across the island were unharmed and there was no major loss of life (1 life lost).  The majority of the damages to housing was to the older wooden structures or structures with wooden roofing.

All the grocers are open and fully operational.  The utility companies are working hard trying to restore electricity and running water.  They expect to have The Valley fully restored with electricity before the end of the month.

All our schools were badly damaged however, they will resume on October 2nd albeit in temporary alternate facilities.

Already across the island the vegetation which was badly beaten, are pushing out new green leaves thus restoring some colour to the island.

All our efforts here are concentrated on bringing the island back to normal and in some cases better functioning.

[....]

Best Regards
Cara

Forwarded to me by website visitor:

Talk about arbitrary:  2 bars on Sandy Ground, less than a football field away from one another:  1) Johnno’s—a bamboo structure right on the water—survives; and 2) Pump House—a substantially built structure set ever so slightly away from the sea—is levelled.

This CNN piece accurately portrays Anguilla’s resilience.

Unbelievable as it may seem, here's the la,test from crown weather (theor report not mine):

I think that we will see the center of Maria pass right over Guadeloupe, Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis as a Category 2 or 3 hurricane on Monday night into Tuesday. I do have serious concerns for a northward shift in the track as some of the guidance are showing a track that takes the center of Maria right across the same exact areas that Irma moved across.

Everyone across the islands of Martinique, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, St. Martin, St. Maarten and Anguilla need to prepare RIGHT NOW for a hurricane hit and it could be a major hurricane impact starting late Monday and continuing through Monday night and into Tuesday.

I have had an email from Gert asking me what I know about the reconstruction of
Anguilla after hurricane Irma and Jose. I am 6,000 miles away, but I do know
that Anguilla is working hard after such devastation to get power,
transportation, food, water, fuel and communications all back together again, I
think the next two or three weeks will tell us a lot. I would like to repeat
myself in saying a HUGE Thank you to Gert, Dave and their team for the help and
information they have given the whole Caribbean Island chain during this last
catastrophic 10 days. I would also like to thank Steve Donahue (who is a

his lovely wife Suzi have suffered so much damage.

Island is absolutely destroyed. The first 2 days were spent clearing electric
from roads. I'd say 60-75% down with many just snapped in half. UK has sent
troops and they are on the ground patrolling. Have heard nightmare stories of
SXM and BVI re crime and looting. Not the situation here. Recovery moving. Gas
and ice is non- existent. Spent 5 hours in line Wed but none arrived. Spent 6
hours yesterday for 3 gallons. Enough to run gen set to do load of wash, take
shower. Maybe another tomorrow. Aid is being given out and no one is suffering.
I am the US Embassy Rep for AXA and we never called for any "emergency
evacuation" ?- and were very carful to do so. Med students got off quickly.
Anyone who wants to get off island can. Stories on CNN are over blown. My house
lost roof and most of contents collected over 20 years trashed. But other are
worse off. Estimate for electrics? Bet 3-5 months - and I am at end of island.
Ferry terminal destroyed and so far just flights to SXM or closer islands.
Think there will be tourist season but certInly not great. Beaches in good
shape. Not many palms. Starting to see green on leafless trees. Try to keep you
updated later. Steve Donahue

I have finally managed to talk to someone on Anguilla, my lovely Dominican firearms policeman that I lend my apartment to when I am in the UK.. He summed it up in 4 words "Anguilla is mash up" , but my apartment had only a little water in it so obviously the bed is dry as he is going back there tonight..Apparently Anglec has so much infrastructural damage  that they are not expecting power to be restored to the Searocks until 2018, I hope that is not so, but who knows. There is a little bit of good news, unrelated to Hurricanes. Deanna Mussington of Anguilla got 4 yesses (spelling?) on the X Factor on TV tonight.
Well done her.

Anguilla Tourist Board - Official Communication Sept, 8 2017

Letter From the ATB Chairperson

Dear Friends and Partners,

As we embark on the road to recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, we thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, your unwavering support, and your generous offers of assistance.  Anguilla is indeed fortunate to benefit from a deep reservoir of goodwill among our visitors, past and present, our travel trade and media partners, and our friends and relatives abroad.

We are still in the process of conducting an island wide assessment of Irma’s impact on our tourism product.  The National Emergency Operations Centre is coordinating teams of officials and volunteers who are conducting damage assessment and needs analysis across the island.

Preliminary reports indicate that most of our resort hotels have weathered the storm, while some of our Villas, Charming Escapes and Guest Houses have not fared as well.  We will be sharing more details as they become available to us.

Again, we thank you for your support. With your help we will rebuild and restore our island.  Many families are in need of relief, and we will be sharing information on how you can help, what kinds of supplies are most urgently needed, and where these supplies can be sent.

Warm regards,

Donna A. Banks

- Irma and now Jose

Good Evening to everyone wherever you are,
I know not much more than what has been on the internet, except my little house is still standing on the Searocks with a roof atop. so I must be one of the very lucky ones. I am now worrying very much about Jose as all structures have been weakened by Irma and I remember Marilyn. So please don't relax and again strengthen your defenses.
One thing I wanted to say is that I am extremely disappointed in my Government (whom I voted for). If a lowly correspondent of Stormcarib knows that a devastating hurricane is coming 10 days before the event, how come the British Government didn't, and why didn't they send teams to Anguilla, B.V.I.. and T&C to help shore up government buildings like Hospitals and shelters etc.,beforehand?
My best to all and especially those still in Irma's path, including my son and family.
Have the best night you can,
JH

P.S. I have emailed my MP, something I have never done before, to raise questions in The Houses of Parliament.

Reporting from Anguilla after the passage of beyond catastrophic IRMA.   Communication is very hard and it's understandable since almost every pole is leaning, broken or gone.   Major property damage to just about everything hunt and everyone.  Lot's of roofs completely gone and windows and doors literally blown aÔway.  Reports of damage to the hospital, prison, police, shelters and so much more.  As of now I'm hearing about one unconfirmed death that was as a result of IRMA.  The island is with electricity.
Personally I got some hard hits as well but I'm alive and well thanks be to GOD.
My encouragement to anyone in the path of IRMA's 185mph winds, please know this storm will be like sometime you will never see and never want too.

Will do another update with some pictures in the morning.

I have very little news of Anguilla, and what I have to say is not officially confirmed, but best of all, no loss of life that I know of. The Hospital has lost its roof, but patients are OK, and The Anguilla Great House hotel on Rendevous Bay has suffered alot of damage. I will report more when I hear it.
Good luck and prayers to those still in Irma's path,

UPDATE – Wed. 11:00 am.  ****FAVOR*** Please – no need to acknowledge – filling up mailbox.

If you didn’t see latest from Roy Peacock, nothing left to say.  Cheers, Steve

Irma is now the 5th strongest hurricane ever formed in the Atlantic basin - winds 180 mph and the strongest ever outside the Caribbean Sea or Gulf of Mexico. A hurricane hunter is still checking and has not reached the northern eyewall where the earlier strongest winds were so it could be even stronger than that!

Official position 7am tomorrow 18.1N  63.0W  at 175 MPH - I don't think there is anything else left to say apart from God bless Anguilla!

Regards

Roy

UPDATE MONDAY 2:30  Still expect cat 3 or 4 head on for AXA.  Any wobble now won’t make much of a difference.  Some wind estimates I got from few websites:

Tues.   1700 – NNE 25 mph

            2000 – NNE 25 mph

            2300 – NNE 30 mph

Wed.    0200 – NNE 35 mph

            0500 – N 48 MPH

            0800 – N 70 MPH

(late morning strongest wind – NW-W-SW  probably 100mph +

            1300 – SSW 85 mph – Moving out

Again, waves will be in the 20+ ft. range starting from north clocking around west then SW and south.  Expect Sandy Ground to get slammed with full force of winds from the west as Irma passes.

Not much else to say.  Trying to get more accurate wind speed/direction/timing figures.  Will pass on if I get.

UPDATE MONDAY 10 AM - OK – this is now getting REALLY scary – as in life-threatening.  Below just sent out by Crown Weather Service:

“I Cannot Stress Enough The Urgency Of Being Prepared For Major Hurricane Irma For Those Of You On The Islands Of Barbuda, St. Martin, St. Maarten, Anguilla & The British Virgin Islands – The core of at least a Category 4 hurricane is forecast to move right over you late Tuesday night and Wednesday. This is likely to be as a bad as or much worse than Hurricane Luis from 1995. Please take this hurricane very seriously and prepare now for a major hurricane impact from Tuesday night through Wednesday.”

Get ready NOW!

UPDATE MONDAY 8 AM - Most of the guessing is over and no choice to but to be prepared for strong cat. 3 or cat 4 hurricane with – if not direct, close enough to consider direct.  If any good news, worst of the storm will be in daylight on Wed.  Right now, here’s what I’ve been able to find figure from some sites re: wind:

Tues.   2200 – NNE 40 mph

            2300 – NNE 40 mph

Wed.    0300 – N 55 mph

            0800 – NNW 90-100 MPH – maybe stronger.

            1200 – NW –W – SW - “full strength”

Wind Guru is showing 27 ft. seas coming from the south and a rain rate of 1.5 in/hr. as it passes – but quickly dropping off.

Please don’t hold me to these – more later.

Feries stop 12 noon, PJIA not showing any cancelled US/EU flights in/out today, but probably nothing tomorrow.  AXA will probably close late today but expect local planes to already be evacuated.  No word on power shut off but figure late Tuesday.

As all of us here on Anguilla remember Gonzalo’s visit in mid-October of 2014, a storm that was supposed to be just a strong tropical depression, passed over us as a Cat 1….surprise, surprise. Although there wasn’t a lot of structural damage, some of us were without power for 7 days!

Now, the latest track on Irma brings her within 40 miles to the NE of us on Wednesday, 6 September around 3:00 PM as a possible Cat 4 hurricane! Time is not on our side.

I hope, as the NHC makes future track adjustments, the 40 mile distance from us will change, but with the storm being only 3 days out, I wouldn’t bet on a considerable track adjustment. Pray that those tracks (IF they are adjusted) take Irma further to the north, but in all cases, be prepared for the worst!

Latest reports from Crown Weather.

As of right now, I think we should see Irma's eye pass about 25-35 miles or so north of Anguilla on Wednesday and then about 100 miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico on Wednesday night.”

Hurricane Conditions are expected for the islands of Antigua, Barbuda, St. Martin and Anguilla on Tuesday night and Wednesday and across the British Virgin Islands on Wednesday and Wednesday night.”

Everyone across the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico need to prepare for hurricane conditions as soon as possible. Any further south shifts in the forecast track of Irma could put the core of the hurricane right across much of the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.”

Can’t put off preparations any longer.  More on winds for us in AXA later.

UPDATE – SUNDAY MORNING – Forecasts/models now call for Irma to pass much closer to us – best guess,  25 – 100 miles to the NE.  Probably time to start boarding up now in AXA.  TS force winds will should start effecting us late Tuesday (happy hurricane Luis anniversary L ) or early Wed.  Based on current info, Wed. afternoon/evening will bring strong TS winds/cat 1 winds then slowly die off Wed. night.  Winds?  Irma will have between 130-140 mph winds/160-170 gusts around the eye as it passes NE.  Unless conditions/track changes, should be much lower for us.  I’ll try to get some wind directions/strengths for us later today.

But as you can see, tracks/conditions change quickly, but this one is not going to go away.  Expect watches/warnings today when NHC will start issuing 3 hour updates. Also probably when SXM flights will start to be cancelled.

UPDATE.  Some good news – NHC now has Irma going only as far south as 17.1° then late Monday already heading WNW and early Tuesday up at 17.4°.  But still passing 100 – 150 mi. to our NE at probably cat 4.  A weather buoy way out near the path on Sun. – Mon reports water temp of 84.2° - another closer to us 85.1° - perfect for intensification.  East End vs. West End will probably make big difference re: winds.  Later.

As before – lots of “ifs” out there.  Irma is at 19° and there are indications it has now started it WSW move.  Should go as far S as 17° and then start to move W and quickly WNW late Mon./early Tues – gaining strength the whole time over warm water.  If this holds true, it should pass to our ENE as cat 4 – possibly 5 -  as close as 50 miles (Crown Weather prediction) to 150 miles (based on current NHC track).  TS winds extend out roughly 50-125 miles and we should prepare at least for some 30-60 mph winds – but easily higher.  As before, East End and north side will have the worst of it.

Personally, I’ll wait to see what happens Monday with the direction/turn, but will probably do my hurricane drill then - if nothing else to be on the safe side.  Tomorrow/Mon. we should start to see  warnings/watches posted by Antiqua and then get 3 hour NHC updates and hopefully Hurricane Hunter reports.

Again – stay safe – and keep a close eye on NHC web site.

A bit of a bright spot this morning.  Models are now showing a turn to the WNW around Monday/Tues. which would mean Irma brushing AXA to our east/NE.  Problem is it will first move WSW for next 2-3 days, then West, then needs to QUICKLY make a turn to the WNW.  Several models predict this but not all.  Also as it approaches our area it will encounter warmer water – and then we could see a cat 4 or possibly 5 - but not likely before.

Thinking now is close to/just north of AXA sometime Wednesday/Thursday.  If the models hold true (and they are long range as in more than 5 days out) we should expect worst of conditions in the East End and along the north shore here in AXA.  Key right now is to hope the WNW turns happens sooner (Sun. – latest Monday) rather than later.  We should know impact Irma will have on AXA by Mon. or latest Tuesday.

Stay safe.

Satellite images show that Irma may already be a hurricane and then develop into a possible cat 2 or 3 by the weekend.  This will be a tough one to call, but best guess right now – on the projected WSW track, it will pass south of AXA on Tuesday/Wednesday somewhere around 16.0 ° -16.5 ° (near Guadalupe/Antiqua) then start heading WNW around mid-week toward Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands.   But… there are a lot of buts.  An early shift to the WNW will bring it much closer to us – a slower movement could allow more intensification -  but we won’t know more until probably the weekend. Right now, several models are forecasting a turn to the WNW as early as Sunday at around 50° - 55° (see attached - AXA is 63°).  Not good for AXA.

Bottom line – Irma is a SERIOUS threat to the central/northern islands – Guadeloupe up through SXM/AXA – and we should now be thinking of possible preparations this weekend.  As always, keep checking the NHC website.

The now-TS Irma is looking like it COULD BE one of those treacherous Cape Verde-type hurricanes – right now, too early to call.  Of concern is the short-term tracks have it moving WNW to a point above 20 degrees (we are 18 degrees) for 2-3 days, BUT THEN heading WSW and W back to around 18 degrees (see attached).  No matter the strength/course, any effects will occur next Tuesday here in AXA – which just HAPPENS to be the 22nd anniversary of Cat 5 hurricane Luis striking AXA.  We will have a much clearer picture on Fri./Sat., and then on Sunday when hopefully a hurricane hunter will be able to investigate.

There is slow development expected with this system through next weekend when it COULD intensify to a hurricane – possibly strong.  It won’t be in our area until next Tuesday – Wednesday so models right now are all over the place.  But several of the more reliable have it coming our way.

Much more will be known in the next few days but could get pretty stormy here in AXA next Tuesday, 5 Sept.  More in the next few days if/when this develops.

  • Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2017 11:19:40 -0400

This is just a heads up regarding the system out in the Atlantic (long way off), but right now models are calling for slow development, possibly affecting AXA as a depression (20-30 mph winds, some rain) on Friday into Saturday.  The northern islands (including AXA) are most at risk for any kind of storm.  As of now, only 1 model calls for possible strengthening to a tropical storm before reaching us – but all the others, nothing stronger than a depression.  So right now, figure some winds, maybe a little rain (please!) for AXA – but continue to monitor – could easily change.  Cheers,

There has been no further development of this system and chances of development in next 5 days have now been lowered to around 70%.  All current models call for the system to pass well to the north of us and is no threat at this time.  No further updates on this system - but continue to keep an eye out for any changes.

WEDNESDAY, July 4 – 11:39 AM

Some changes with Invest 94-L this AM, now with the potential to become TS Don by tomorrow, and possibly graze us to the north on Saturday-Sunday.  Unless there is additional strengthening/track change, should just bring us some squally/rainy weather.  Crown forecast today;

“Given the appearance of Invest 94-L on satellite imagery and the fact that it will be embedded within favorable environmental conditions for development, I think that there is at least a 90 percent chance that we will see Invest 94-L become Tropical Storm Don by Wednesday.

Everyone Across The Northern Lesser Antilles {includes Anguilla}, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico & The Northeastern Caribbean should at least be prepared for tropical storm conditions starting on Saturday and continuing into the first half of Sunday.”

As always – continue to monitor the forecast.  Cheers,

TUESDAY, July 3 – 9:59 AM

Based on this morning’s forecast, looks like no real threat for us here in AXA.  No further updates unless things change for the worse.  Cheers,

Even though it is looking increasingly more likely that Invest 94-L will pass to the north of the Lesser Antilles, I would still caution Everyone Across The Northern Lesser Antilles, Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico to keep a close eye on this tropical disturbance. There is the potential that this system could still come close enough to produce squally weather this weekend.”

Nothing to be too concerned about right now but could be some bad weather next weekend – POSSIBLY a tropical storm but probably just a tropical disturbance with some rain/gusty winds.  Just need to keep an eye on because it si forecast to pass over us.  The Crown Weather Service forecast this morning:

“As of right now, I think there is a 40 to 50 percent chance that we will see a tropical depression form to the east of the Lesser Antilles between 30 and 40 West Longitude around Tuesday or Wednesday.

Everyone Across The Lesser Antilles” {this includes Anguilla},” Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico should keep very close tabs on this tropical disturbance. There is the potential that this system could impact you next weekend as, at the minimum, a strong tropical disturbance and very possibly as a tropical storm.”

Just need to keep an eye on it this week.  Cheers,

Sadly I have had to leave my winter home and return to the mud and rain in the English Lake District. Talking of rain, up to when I left Anguilla last Wednesday our total rainfall on the Searocks for March had been .98 of an inch and I don’t think there has been any more since, it was quite hot the last few days 91F on the day I left and the ocean was flat calm with very little breeze but I am told the north east wind is back and the sea is stirring again. I leave you for now with a pic of Captains Bay and Scrub Island  in one of the big seas we had in the last few months.
My best to all and in hope of a Hurricane free season to come.

Good Evening Everyone, it is very un-Anguilla like weather, the current temp is 73F in the breeze, the sun, that has been invisible since lunch time, has just gone down, we have had about a quarter of an inch of rain, which I must say is much needed.  I am sitting  at my computer in a pair of Levis a cotton shirt and a cotton sweater and my body temp is just about OK, but it is definitely what I would call bed-weather. Definitely no diving tomorrow, the sea is angry, someone has upset it, large wild rollers coming in. Stay warm ad dry.

Good Morning to you all,
Just to post that we had .93 of an inch of rain during the whole of February here on the Searocks, that means less than 2 inches so far in 2017. Not enough by a long shot.  We have very strong winds gusting at the moment and there is supposed to be a local sailboat race this afternoon, which should be interesting to say the least. The Temp is a lovely 80F in the shade, the ocean a deep blue with a lot of whitecaps and it is gorgeous. quite big nurse sharks, thankfully sleeping, and a lovely big turtle. Then
listened to some great music from the 264 string band at Madearimon Restaurant

Good Afternoon Everybody,
I did remember to say “White Rabbits” first thing this AM so hopefully February will be a lucky month for us all. The current temp is 80F and there is a strong easterly breeze, very comfortable in the shade.
The total rainfall for January on the Searocks was .99 of an inch, not enough I am afraid, the plants are still thirsty and dropping their leaves everywhere. Lovely dive at Anguillita yesterday, but the island is quiet, the hotels and restaurants are not busy and this should be our prime time, so please come on down if you are in need of a holiday. Small Brown Dog Mark II is busy lounging on the gallery and chasing lizards but has been completely flummoxed by Harry our resident wild tortoise who will absolutely not run away, see pics.
I wish everyone a great rest of the day and evening.

A Very Happy New Year to all and sundry. current temp is 78F, extremely comfortable compared with many other parts of the world, and there is a new moon and a fresh breeze. Where else would one want to be? I was invited to a party tonight but as I would like to start 2017 in my happy place 75 or so feet under the ocean I declined the Indian food (no doubt delicious) and assortment of various people of paradise ( to borrow T&T’s words) so that I can get up at 6.30 get my dive gear together, feed, water and walk the small brown dog before I jump onto Dougie’s boat, breath the ions off the ocean and tip off  backwards into the Atlantic Ocean. 2016 saw me make 70 years as they say here, and one of my Anguillan friends said the other day, “but Joanie you are only 70EC dollars not 70US. So I attach a pic where one can look great at 70EC in a 3mil wetsuit with a mask and regulator hiding all the wrinkles. Have a happy time and a great year everyone.
