Hi Gert,

This is sent in reply to your e-mail about conditions in my area (just north of Kingston)

We had consistent but mostly moderate to light, with only the occasionally ten minute or so burst of heavy rain all day yesterday Nov 5. Wind in my vicinity was less than 15 knots during the day and some slightly higher gusts during the early part of the night of the 5th.

Since the center of the system never got much nearer than 100 miles from my location I guess one could say that we got off lightly. At no time did we lose electric power from the grid. Further west from Alligator Pond to Negril some flooding was reported. The Norman Manley airport which is right on the edge of the sea only had (as far as I know) winds to 35 knots on one occasion. There are some reports of strong wind and heavy rain in the town of Mandeville which is at a high elevation in central Jamaica

Manager for Communication and Customer Service at the National Works Agency (NWA), Stephen Shaw, says the entity has not received any reports of significant road damage caused by heavy rains and flooding associated with Tropical Storm Rafael. “We have had some impact; [but] not as bad as we would have thought it was going to be, based on the projections,” Shaw said. “I think we have done pretty well. We continue to assess, we continue to clean and clear, and we’ll continue the efforts and the assessments over the next 24 to 48 hours,” he added

Reporting on conditions at Falmouth, Jamaica.
We are past the worst of the storm. It has been a none event in Falmouth with very little wind. Some localized flooding has occurred and more is expected. Up to 6pm on Tuesday we have had 3 inches of rain over the past 36 hours. Schools in the parish were closed today and cruise ships cancelled coming into port both Monday and Tuesday. More rain is expected through the night into Wednesday with accumulated totals of about 3.5 inches.
The south coast was affected to a much greater extent with flooding occurring in low laying areas as well as wind gusts up to 50 mph.

Hello,

At 4am Eastern, sustained winds are at 60mph, and movement is NW at 13mph.

Currently getting heavy rains and winds in Clarendon.

Some flooding already reported in the southern parts of the parish.

After it moves away from Jamaica it is forecasted to become a hurricane close to the Cayman Islands.

Stay safe.

- Strong Tropical Wave

Hello!

We have a strong tropical wave and low pressure system that is producing intermittent heavy showers and thunderstorms across the island.

Metservice states this wave will continue to affect the island until tomorrow (Friday October 18th). We are currently under flash flood warning until Friday.

I have personally experienced the heavy showers with strong wind, especially in the night.

It brings some welcomed cool weather to some parts of the island.

Take care!

- Beryl on Jamaica

Good morning,

Sorry for my late response.
I live just outside Falmouth,  Trelawny.
Falmouth does not seem to have had a major infrastructural damage. Mainly downed trees.
I think this is the same for 3/4 of the island.
About 60% of persons have power now.
Claremont, St Elizabeth and Westmorland have been the worst hit which is where the eye came closest to. There have been 3 reported deaths. Most of the structures had a lot of damage to roofs and walls.
I don't think there has been a comprehensive assessment as to the amount of damage in those three parishes yet.
Kingston still has areas without power which is a reflection of the 60% island wide. Cell  service is back in most areas but persons phones are dead so cannot communicate.
I will give another update in a few days. Most of the island had rain last night. I measured 1 1/4" of rain. During Beryl I measured 5 1/2" but I am sure it was closer to 8" as during the storm the rain was blowing horizontal. I estimate during the peak I had winds gusting to 80 - 85 mph.
I have no power or Internet so using phone data to send this message.

We are here and grateful.

We have no electricity or water.

Some of the roofs in our area are partially damaged.

Trees fell and blocked parts of the roads.

Some southern areas were badly damaged.

We have reports of power lines down in Rocky Point, Portland Cottage and surrounding areas and roadblocks from trees.

Reports of damages in St. Elizabeth also.

Awaiting more reports.

Be safe!

- Category 4 Hurricane Beryl

So Hurricane Beryl is right on our doorsteps as a Category 4 system. The forward speed has slowed down from 22MPH to 18MPH as of writing, which is not good for us.

We are currently feeling light winds at my location (Clarendon).

Tropical storm to hurricane wind speeds are expected here and we have prepped as much as possible.

We are hoping for a safe journey through this hurricane as it will affect the Southern Parishes mostly.

Be safe everyone!

- Hurricane Beryl Alert!

Good day!

As Hurricane Beryl approaches Jamaica, we are imploring everyone to be as prepared as possible for this very dangerous storm.

To me this seems very similar to Hurricane Ivan (2004) which caused catastrophic damage mostly to the South of the island.

There is some wind shear South East of the island which is forecasted to lessen the Hurricane's wind speed just a bit.

As of writing, Hurricane Beryl is a very strong category 5 storm with wind speeds of 165MPH (265KMH), moving WNW at 22MPH (35.4KMH).

I will see how best I can update during the hurricane.

Be safe everyone!

- Strong Tropical Wave.

Hey everyone!

Just a quick update.

The strong tropical wave is currently passing South of the island hence most of the rain was more focused in the Southern Parishes.

Kingston received some strong winds and rain yesterday (June 26) and some small damages were seen.

Here in Clarendon some strong winds and heavy rains passed over us in the night, along with intermittent heavy rain and light rain into the early morning.

Satellite images currently showing scattered clouds in and around the island, some more rain is forecasted.

Stay safe!
