It’s getting quite blowy here in Bequia, with big wind gusts now. I had a wooden ornament fall of a bathroom window on the back side of the house, and the wind never comes from that direction, so that was a surprise. I’ve gone around and moved in everything that might blow. No rain for the last little while, and for the most part what we’ve had has been more drizzle than anything else, though there was what sounded like a good downpour around 4:30 this morning. The sea is wild with the tops of the big waves being blown backwards. The forecast for Bequia for winds is now down to 70 kph so that’s good news. |

May God be with you as you take shelter from monster storm Hurricane Irma. Prayers going out that Irma might still turn north and save the islands, and for safety for all in her wide path, but in the meantime, get your important papers and devices into plastic bags, grab the insect repellant, canned food, bottled water, flashlights, whatever else you might need, and find a strong place to shelter, high enough from potential flooding. |

The rain from TS Harvey started about 2 am, and it rained lightly until about 9 am when the wind picked up and the rain came down in torrents, and was coming from all directions. The rain was like a waterfall coming down stairs and over garden walls and the hillsides, and the roads were rivers. The water was sheeting off the roof as it was coming so heavily, and there was a lot of flooding, stone walls fell down, there are some trees down, lots of rocks and mud in the roads, some blocking the roads completely. I understand the road to Paget Farm is difficult to pass. The storm surge was terrible in Port Elizabeth with much damage being done to waterfront businesses, with water inside 6 feet high. Many homes were flooded as well, ours included. By the time we finished cleaning up the mess and I had time to notice, around 1 pm, Harvey was gone. Today the sun is shining, the sky is blue, with a nice gentle breeze, and we have dogs beds, shoes, baskets, rugs, etc. out in the sun and the breeze to dry. There was such a volume of water in such a short time that gutters and drains that are normally quite adequate for the normal volume of water, just couldn’t cope. Attached is a video taken at Friendship Bay of the road turned into a river. file://www./leandra.plantinga/videos/10155036166698892/ |

Greetings Stormcarib Friends,
Its the quiet after the storm here in Kingstown as Tropical Storm Harvey passed just to the south of Kingstown about 11AM on Friday August 18th , the intense activity south of Kingstown sparked flooding on the islands of Bequia and Mustique with Bequia being the hardest hit.
The Southern Portion of mainland St Vincent remained largely unscathed with just the isolated case of flooding in Calliaqua and a few other minor road floodings.A portion of the road at Orange Hill was washed out cutting off communities north of that area, there were large waves in Owia at the Fisheries center and a blockage at a bridge in London resulted in some street flooding.I had some photos to post but another correspondent already did that so I wouldnt double up on that report.
The all clear was given at 2PM after the Tropical Storm Warning was discontinued and the Argyle International Airport re-opened two hours later at 4PM with air traffic resuming. Some food outlets and other businesses opened at 4PM in the city.
After all it passed right over us and it could have been worse, but thank god no life was lost. All shelters except for two have been closed , there were close to one dozen persons including an entire family at those shelters up to this afternoon.
The National Emergency Management Organisation NEMO will continue their assessments tomorrow as they travel down to the Grenadines.
Thanks everyone for your concern and once again God has spared us from the worst. Hello Gert,
It is awfully quiet in St Vincent. I ventured into KINGSTOWN around 3:00pm today it was indeed abandoned except for the squash center that is hosting the OECS Squash championships with 7 countries participating. Anyway there seems to some damage again north east of the country, Owia, Sandy Bay, London with rivers over flowing their banks washing away roads, huge floods. Owia Fisheries Complex taking a beating. Photos above are Sandy Bay, London, Owia.
Bequia had severe flooding maybe a first. Photos of Bequia here. Mustique airport runway under water
CALLIAQUA again on the same side of the island, where the Coast Guard base is located, and on the way to the old airport and KINGSTOWN.
