New pictures just published by the Dutch Navy. A heli is send out to get a
beter impression of the damage on Saba, Statia and St. Maarten.
Dutch police and marines are also monitoring.

According to our local weatherman, the center of Hurricane Irma has passed Statia now: 'The winds are decreasing, the barometer is rising and the salt fog is beginning to thin. Rain bands from the departing hurricane will bring periods of heavy rain this afternoon, and Jose will bring more rain Sunday.'
We're of island ourselves this week, News is coming in bits by bits. At least one of the two mobile phone providers is down. So is the power and are trees. There are reports of roofs flying of, but nothing confirmed yet.

In preparation of the upcoming tropical storm / hurricane IRMA, mapping support is requested by The Red Cross for pre disaster situation on St. Eustatius and St. Maarten. This will help the Red Cross and local responders to better respond. Also this information will be used to analyze potential damage later.
The Netherlands Red Cross has six branches in the Caribbean. Red Cross St. Maarten is the local branch on St. Maarten. The branch is involved in disaster response on the islands, and provides first aid trainings. Detailed maps of the project area are vital to properly undertake assessments in preparation of hurricanes and in the event of a hurricane.

According to the Dutch government, almost 100 Dutch soldiers have departed Curaçao and Aruba en route to St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba. In addition, two Navy ships will depart from Curaçao and Aruba in order to deliver extra soldiers and supplies after the passing of Irma. 'The Netherlands has offered help and support, also help with any possible damage after the passage of the hurricane', is stated by the Dutch government. A Weather Impact Team with representatives of the Ministries of Infrastructure and the Environment, Security and Justice, Economic Affairs, Defense and the Interior and Kingdom Relations will concentrate, together with the representatives on the islands, on any further requests for assistance. Minister Plasterk of the Interior and Kingdom Relations maintains contact with Prime Minister Marlin of St. Maarten and through the Kingdom Representative with the authorities in St. Eustatius and Saba. Being of island ourselves this week, we will try to keep up with the latest developments as best as possible.

Latest weather update (Monday afternoon local time) by local forecaster George
Works:
'Since this morning, the forecast track for dangerous hurricane Irma has
shifted slightly north, away from Statia. This resulted in lower outlooks for
wind, waves and rain. St. Maarten is still very near the path and will
experience more severe weather than Statia.
Irma's outer rain bands are approaching the islands and may bring showers
tonight. Tomorrow on Statia wind will gradually increase to 25kn and waves to
4m with occasional showers. Wednesday winds will peak around 50kn with gusts to
60kn, swell will peak around 6m and rain will be occasionally heavy. Thursday
conditions will slowly return to normal.'

Local weatherman at Statia George Works reports:
'Dangerous Hurricane Irma will pass about 100nm east of Statia Wednesday
bringing tropical storm force winds, 5.5m waves and heavy rain. A second storm
or hurricane may form may form and bring rain and wind Sunday and Monday.'
Being of island ourselves this week, we will try to update this section as best
as possible.
