- Irma rising

We are experiencing power outages and the internet is gone now. I understand the storm has mostly passed over the keys and I am waiting for updates on tv but they are concentrating on Miami and landfall on the east coast.

We all reach for the best possible outlook in situations like this and even the slightest westward movement brings a sigh of relief. Sadly though good news for us is bad news for Tampa st Pete area.

Reports are showing a weakening of the storm as it moves up the peninsula down to a cat one as it leaves Florida.

More later if I can. If anyone hears anything about the upper keys please pass it on to me. As far as I know all our neighbors and friends have evacuated

Peace to all

Scott

Hunkered down in a Hyatt in Naples the outer bands are just now starting to reach us. Pretty much all of Florida is under this hurricane watch and evacuation orders are in place nearly statewide, but it is pretty obvious that Irma is crossing the Keys, probably near Key West and then turning up the west coast of Florida.

Our hotel, the Hyatt House on Fifth Ave   is the command center for the local first responders and the mayor's office, and many of the guests are local "napolitanos" seeking safe refuge for themselves and their pets. We are right on the edge of the mandatory evacuation zone, across the river in fact, and we trust that our good fortune in landing with these wonderful hosts and sublimely friendly people will see us through the next couple of days.

I can only inadequately express my sincere appreciation and gratitude for the outpouring of concern and support from all our friends on Facebook and elsewhere, and we look forward to travelling to all who offered to open their homes to this circus in our time of need from New England to Hawaii. Now that will be some road trip!

My wife Kym and I have traveled from our home in the Keys with her Mom, our two dogs, Allie and Tobie, and the cat Mr. Tibbs. The staff at the hotel have been fabulous, professional and accommodating.  We were originally booked in a hotel on the east coast but nearly all models showed the storm crashing into Miami and sowing devastation northward. Change of plans and directions and here we are on the west coast looking at a spaghetti trail leading right into the lobby of our hotel, "suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune..."

Hoping for the safety and good fortune of all our fellows in the path of this beast, and feeling terrible for those who have already suffered under her mallet.

Good night and more in the morning if I have a connection.

- Evacuation

There is an evacuation order in place for all of Monroe County, the Florida Keys, for visitors and residents alike. "How close" calculations show the eye of Irma just 34 miles from us here in Tavernier Sunday morning. The problem with any evacuation from the Keys is that there is only one way out, and that route follows the track of the storm. The Eastern Florida coast will almost certainly experience landfall so that could mean driving clear through Florida just to stay ahead of this lady.

Gasoline? Another problem. I hear most if not all stations in the Keys are empty. Monroe County is 126 miles long...do the math.

Picture perfect day here in the Florida Keys today, barely any wind, blue skies and a brief shower this morning.

Stay safe out there!

We are absolutely taking this one very seriously here in the Florida Keys. Fortunately most of the tourists will be gone with the end of our Labor Day weekend. The big question remains, though, to go or not to go. Do we take arms against a sea of troubles? Or do we head for the undiscovered country of South Florida? Apologies to the Bard, thus the native hue of resolution,  but this is our problem this week. So we will stock up as if to stay, but we will be ready to dash off, animals in tow, if need be...
