- María update, Distrito Nacional
  • By Guillermo Serra <gaquiles at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2017 17:41:01 -0400
Heavy rain and occasional wind gusts over the Nation’s Capital, T-Storms as
well. This means many urban floods.

Of course, nothing compared to what’s happening on the north of the country,
rain and flooding will be the main issue, lots of trees toppled, damaging power
lines and properties. We will get the full scope of the damages in the next few
days, but it doesn’t look good overall, I hope no casualties.

Puerto Rico, Dominica, thinking of you guys, hope you recover soon from this
disaster of María, prayers.

Eye of Maria just passing outside the north coast,
heavy rains and wind last couple of hours.

Roof of in Pueblo nuevo Sosua, affecting electricity lines and pole.

River Sabaneta de Yasica and Veragua flooded the area earlier today https://youtu.be/oqpHe5vifmo.
Can only get worse as the rain continue.

- 21st September - Maria in Las Terrenas - Update 2
  • By Roy Stevenson <roy.stevenson at live.co.uk>
  • Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2017 18:25:35 +0000
It's past 2pm on Thursday and the eye of Maria has passed by us, out to the north.

The power went out last night around midnight and came back around 12:45 today, so it's been candles and torches overnight.
In some areas of town, there is still no power.
No worries, friends around and a little alcohol to relax everyone.

Today a trip into town while the storm was in a lull.

After Irma passed through, the town did a lot to remove any at risk trees so the damage caused by them so far seems to be limited.
In town, apart from small branches, the damage looks limited, but we did only stick to the main streets this time.

Along the beach, the damage started by Irma has continued and the main road to the East of town (Punta Poppy to the Cemetery) has suffered a lot.  The beach has eroded back, a large number of palm trees have fallen and the road itself is now at risk as the sea is undercutting it in two places.  Luckily, after Irma, one of the at risk areas was protected using local rock.  This rock has all be washed away by Maria and so now the road is also exposed.

The other side of town (Cemetery to Las Ballenas) is difficult to access, but the Pueblo Pescadores area seems to have survived OK, with a little damage to the boardwalk at the river end.

The river is very high, but the associated storm surge is also holding it back, hopefully that will drop soon.

Upto now, we have had spells of rain.  Around 1pm, heavy rains started again and have not let up at all.  So the risk of flooding is the main concern at this point.  Some roads are already barely passable.

We are now feeling the effects of Maria.
Lots of rain and strong breeze from time to time.
Radio informs some roofs off in Samana, trees down and lots of rain and flooding in areas prone to flood.
We are OK, but this is slow passing which brings a lot of rain.

Hurricane Maria thrashed parts of the Dominican Republic with heavy rain and
high winds as it passed off its east coast on Thursday after making a direct hit
on Puerto Rico that caused severe flooding and cut power to almost all the
island.

There's a distant sound of breeze roaring. We are prepared and on the alert.

- Maria - 20:00 on the 20th in Las Terrenas
  • By Roy Stevenson <roy.stevenson at live.co.uk>
  • Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2017 00:13:52 +0000
Well today in Las Terrenas has seen the usual last minute activity as we all prepare for the 2nd hurricane in as many weeks.
Late afternoon the town became busy as people finished off their days and rushed home.
Many of the trees damaged by Irma have been hurriedly trimmed and the streets cleared of any remaining debris from the last storm.

This storm has a different feel to Irma.   With Irma we had little rain up front and it was a lovely clear evening, little wind, relatively calm seas and a great sunset.

As she approaches, Maria has brought a steady increase in wind during the day, the background noise slowly increasing during to a steady background roar.  Some major showers have also been thrown in for good measure.

This evening the seas have really started to pick up and the rain showers when they come are heavy.  Its also surprisingly humid.

The power in Las Terrenas is going on and off, but so far, seems to come back each time.

The beaches that took such a battering are already seeing large waves and sand is being washed across the beach roads.

However, everyone is upbeat.  Many watching the weather updates as they come in discussing it on Facebook or by Whatsapp.

Good evening folks.

Everything easy here in Distrito Nacional and Greater Santo Domingo. Since this morning, wind have started to pick up lightly, nothing serious, although there were few some reports of toppled tree and some damages due to it, debris on ROAD 3, which drives you TO-FROM Santo Domingo to Punta Pana, local authorities over there have been quick to clean them up quickly.

Right now at home, cloudy, not much rain since early this afternoon but of course expecting more rain, the Central Government issued and order to suspend all labors in public and private sectors tomorrow, just as Irma two weeks ago.

I haven't seen reports from correspondents on Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, we look forward for your reports, but there is information on Twitter if you search for "Punta Cana", which is being hammered with tropical storm winds gusts.

ALERTS MAP

The Emergency Operation Center (COE) issued the following communication at 2:00 p.m. local time

Provinces in RED ALERT will have schools closed starting tomorrow according to the Ministerio de Educación, and so if more provinces are declared RED, the same. So far, most provinces from the east coast to the north coast, except MONTE CRISTI (bordering with Haiti on the north line) are in the highest alert.

Tomorrow will be the last day to make all necessary precautions, this is Irma deja vu, I swear I sometimes confuse the name calling María, Irma, because this just happened exactly two weeks before, Thursday 2 AM, as with IRMA, will be the moment when Dominican Republic will start to get the TS effects.

To those in the path of María, stay safe.

Good morning.

Oh my God, thinking about Dominica and waiting for news from folks over there.

María might not impact Dominican Republic but nevertheless, we are preparing.
The president canceled his agenda at the UN and arrived last night to be in
front of the emergency council. We are under "early alert" for recent flooding
in north region specially in Espaillat Province.

Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia (COE) and Oficina Nacional de Meteorología
(ONAMET) are issuing advisories and we are paying attention to them.

Now that María is heading to Puerto Rico, I wish my neighbors the best...

Not again! In just about a week and a half from Irma, we are dealing again with another cyclone, hopefully less powerful but dangerous, a good reminder that Hurricane season is not over.

This brings me back memories from 1998, Hurricane George, that made landfall on our Homeland about the same day María would, back then it was seemed that it was only Puerto Rico, but then it went a little bit south and we took a direct hit.

So, as today, Government is preparing as it did with Irma, we will know for sure what is going to be as the 3-day cone gets closer.

  • Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2017 21:35:43 -0400
Irma is getting away from our homeland, nothing significant to report from
Distrito Nacional, some trees downed by some gusty winds we had in the early
p.m. hours with with heavy rain, but authorities have done an outstanding job
to quickly clean up debris wherever it was needed.

Power today was unstable, we had few blackouts for couple of hours in total,
but again, authorities and Utility co. have been on top of the issues.

Back to work tomorrow, schools will remain close, also north coast, as
expected, was the most affected.

Thoughts and prayers for those affected by Irma, and the ones ahead of her.

Guillermo.

Wind and rain have been constantly strong during the last couple of hours.
Trees down, power lines down in Sosua, some roofs blown off simple houses with zinc roofs in Las piedras sosua.

Now suddenly calm. Waiting for the back wall effects.

Hello good morning from Punta Cana, we passed the Irma test, outstanding, never had major problems, power 24 hours, thanks to the best power provider of the country. We had a lot of rain showers, wind blowing sometimes strong but never what we thought it was gone be. Thanks to Puerto Rico that pushed the hurricane a little higher from us. At the moment Irma is going along the north coast. They will feel the effects much more, specially flodding will be a problem. All the hotels in Punta Cana did a great job, keeping the tourists safe. Airport stayed open all the time. Keep safe everybody.

The wind is really howling now - gusting to 70 mph at a guess and still coming from the west.  There is a lot of leaf litter and the trees are starting to break.  The rain is heavy too.  Amazingly the hummingbirds and bananaquits were still visiting the nectar feeders until recently.  The towels are ready but so far just have one leaky window.  The wind is getting worse as I post so it looks like there is more to come.  The beachfront restaurants in Cabarete are full of sand and seawater - don't know about Sosua.  The beach webcams seem to have stopped working.

Everybody is shuttered in their homes, today was declared no work, for public
and private sectors, I took some time to drive around and take a look some
neighborhoods in central Distrito Nacional (Naco, Piantini, Gascue) this is a
ghost town.

Currently, light rain, no wind, cool morning. I think we are being shielded by
the Coordillera Central (the high mountains range in the center of the island),
so wind coming from the north is facing resistance to reach down here, I don’t
know, my guess.

The Malecón is closed for incoming traffic, I guess unless you live there, you
won’t be allowed to get into the the avenue.

From my vantage point down by the airport, Irma did little if anything to Punta Cana. Minimal rain, although we have some solid bands to the east of us. Winds we not enough to rattle windows (and ours rattle)!

Winds are up a bit this morning but I would say that any damaging effects from Irma are no longer a risk.

- Irma update #4
  • By Guillermo Serra <gaquiles at gmail.com>

About 1:30 p.m. We had a short squall lasting about 20 minutes, immediately
after was misty sunny and hot.

I made a quick stop at the supermarket because I checked I didn't have
batteries for one of my flashlight, and got some bread, which btw I took a
picture, shell was almost empty. There was plenty of water, but I stocked on
those yesterday.

We have no power on my circuit as power personnel are pruning trees nearby
(which has me upset as so far I have 4 hours without power and this hasn't even
got started).

I noticed most banks closed at 4, not expecting much activity tomorrow, I will
skip work if conditions are not safe, but here on south coast we are left out
from most danger, rain might be an issue.

I was looking for information from Barbuda, I hope those folks are OK, as well
in Virgin island, and the rest of the of the Leeward Islands (Norte de Islas de
Barlovento). Hope you all there are OK, I've seen some media of the aftermath
and is very scary.

We are not seeing anything from Irma yet and the weather is hot and sunny with a slight breeze, but the barometer has started to fall a little.  People have been stocking up on water, diesel and canned food and all around is the sound of hammering as windows are boarded up.  There is a feeling of disbelief as the northern Dominican Republic is usually lucky, and the storms curve away to the north before they reach us.  Businesses are closed and churches and schools are readied as refuges for those in need.  The towel brigade is on standby and the furniture up on blocks.  Good luck to everyone in Irma's path!

Time for a rum and cigar! Irma has not yet shown her face in Punta Cana. Breeze is up a touch and a few short showers. Air is a bit cooler due to the rotation and our position. I have been predicting all along that we will receive tropical storm conditions. It is looking like I might be right!

Here in the Dominican Republic most provinces are under government red alert - meaning get prepared.

Yet somehow thousands and thousands will do little or nothing.

For the north and north east this is big time serious.  For the south and west much less so but still to be considered serious!

Traffic is ridiculous in the city today and grocery stores are jammed.

For those on the north coast getting out is not a bad idea if you can but do it soon. You are running out of time.

As dynamic as this event is, so is the response from authorities.

I'm posting the oficial Alerts Map from el Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia (COE), now most of the country is under red alert, that is for sure most schools will be closed for the rest of the week, which seems logic for me right now.

Major supermarkets here with long lines.

Authorities, from municipal level to central level are very active on keeping citizens safe. All provinces are in ALERT, ranking from green to red.

All north coast provinces are on RED ALERT, shelters are being prepared.

Where I live, Distrito Nacional, we are on yellow alert, but so far schools will remain open, but on provinces in the north coast.

My family already got some sort of previsions, like canned food, bottled water and fuel on our cars, but I'm almost sure down here wind gusts will remain under 45 km/h (with gusts no more than 77 km/h). It is the northernmost provinces which worries me most.

Traffic in this city was as busy as usual, it took me more to get home from work besucase I was looking for an oil lamp but people ran over those already, and also was filling my tank with gas, I was stuck on some traffic for a while, gas station was a tad busy but not long lines, it may be a bit different tomorrow.

- More rain!
  • By "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles at gmail.com>

Dominican Republic, brace for rain!

GFS models continue to show accumulations, I believe, around 20 to 30 mm in some regions, specially in the center of our Homeland.

Dominicans are just returning from a wet holiday weekend, it is the Día Internacional del Trabajo (Workers Day), some were lucky to have periods of sun in the north, Punta Cana was not lucky though, reports coming from Aeropuerto Internacional de Punta Cana told wind gusts up to 50 km/h, some small planes flipped over, and heavy urban floods also were reported. Yesterday it was Samaná who had the most rain (the province in the nort-east that has the 'hand shape').

Right now, it is raining and lightning in Distrito Nacional and greater Santo Domingo, and this morning we just had beautiful skies and warm temperatures, but oh well, in the tropics, even on the most beautiful day, it rains, what a blessing.

Authorities are telling that rains with reduce frequency, but it is May and this is the month where it rains most.

Stay tuned...

Good Evening.

Just wanted to post quickly these pictures I found in social media regarding the recent events from past few days. I can speak from my experience in Distrito Nacional that it has been raining with short recess from Friday, it's been worst in southwest coast. Rain might succeed within the next day or two, but for the moment, damage is being done to the infrastructure across some provinces.
