Drop what you are doing and start stocking up on supplies for Hurricane Irma.
Many businesses are already closed for holidays, but some were planning to reopen.
Get your favorite drinks and foods now before they are all gone. Sometimes shipments coming by freighter to the islands are diverted to avoid the hurricanes with supplies destined for the Virgin Islands being rapidly sold on another island.
So it pays to have food in the pantry for the aftermath. Stock up on drinking water too. If power lines are down, the pumps that make desal water and household pumps that power the cistern water will not be working.
If you have a generator, test it out, get spare gas, oil and plugs. Remember those generators need frequent oil changes.
Batteries, lights and super heavy duty garbage bags come in handy. You may need to use the bags to protect your belongings from incoming water.
With winds over a 100 miles per hour, water comes in sideways through windows, doors and other places. Your place could flood somewhat even if you are way above ground level.
Pay attention to the weather. If you wait until the last minute to get ready like so many islanders do, you may find yourself with very little to survive the aftermath of a hurricane.
The hurricane parties are fun and terrifying, but when the hurricane is gone you may be surviving on what ever you have stockpiled in advance.

We are rapidly approaching the crazy time of year... September when other hurricanes hit this area.
Think positively, push them out to sea with brain power!
Make power while the sun shines, so many nifty solar power banks on the market now to run your USB gadets and some are big enough to run a few 110 outlets too.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
1. A vigorous tropical wave accompanied by a broad low pressure system is producing a large area of cloudiness and showers more than 300 miles south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands. Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for gradual development, and a tropical depression is likely to form by early next week over the eastern or central tropical Atlantic Ocean. This system is forecast to move toward the west or west-northwest at 10 to 15 mph for the next several days. * Formation chance through 48 hours...low...30 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...high...70 percent.
2. A strong tropical wave located over the southeastern Caribbean Sea is producing a large area of cloudiness and thunderstorms, along with tropical-storm-force wind gusts in squalls. Environmental conditions are expected to become a little more conducive for development by Sunday over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and by early next week over the Bay of Campeche while the disturbance moves westward or west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph. This system could produce brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds over Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao tonight and Friday. For additional information on this system, see High Seas Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service. * Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent.
LOTS to watch out for!

More stuff to watch out for!
Probably not a threat to the Virgin Islands, but just the same, time to prepare for the worst and then nothing happens.
Most folks in the islands though, prefer that last minute rush when there is absolute chaos and the liquor shelves empty out first followed by the batteries as a close second.Next it the candles.
If you buy candles and everyone should, get a few dozen of the hurricane globe type citronella candles.
You can see with them, they keep the bugs at bay and the globes prevent the wind from blowing them out.
One candle in the dark is kind of depressing. Having 2 dozen lit up is a bit more livable. You can keep one or two in the bathroom and the rest scattered around your home in the rooms you are utilizing.
Having the bathroom lit up with candles is handy indeed. During a hurricane, you may find yourself in there pretty often. My tummy doesn't do well during hurricanes. Also often times the bathroom is the sturdiest part of the home, another reason to be in there during a hurricane.
Mason jar citronella candles are terrific. Even once you use them up, it's easy enough to just buy more candles to stick in the jars.
You can close them up between uses. Remember, you may have to pour out some of the wax before you blow it out so there is a wee bit of wick sticking up to light up next time.
Tropical Weather Outlook NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 200 AM EDT Mon Jul 17 2017
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
1. A small low pressure system located about 800 miles east of the Windward Islands is moving westward at about 15 mph. Associated shower and thunderstorm activity is beginning to show some signs of organization, and environmental conditions are forecast to be marginally conducive for some development of this system before it reaches the Lesser Antilles in two to three days. After that time, less favorable upper-level winds are expected to hinder additional development. An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the disturbance this afternoon, if necessary. * Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...40 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.
2. An area of disturbed weather has developed several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Some development of this system is possible over the next several days while it moves slowly toward the west-northwest or northwest over the open Atlantic Ocean. * Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent.
Well it's time for a trip to the beach!

A low pressure trough located about 1000 miles east-southeast of

Below is some exciting news from Nanny Cay:
FIRST MAHI MAYHEM FISHING TOURNEY
SECOND EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN MARCH 2018
Tournament director, Ken Pemberton, from the BVI Conservation & Fisheries Department, was pleased to see 14 boats registered and 56 anglers taking part. He said: “The event was a tremendous success, very well organised at a perfect location for a fishing tournament.”
Anglers caught 573lbs of the eligible species of mahi, wahoo, tuna and kingfish. The two-day event was presented by Caribbean Sustainable Fisheries in partnership with Nanny Cay Marina.
ARC RALLIES DEPART TORTOLA
On Saturday 6 May, crews of two World Cruising Club rallies waved goodbye to the shores of Tortola as they set off for their offshore adventures as part of the 2017 editions of ARC Europe and ARC USA.
Australian yachting legend Jon Sanders and his faithful SV Perie Banou II, stopped off at Nanny Cay for a few nights on his record-breaking 10th voyage around planet earth.
Jon, now 78 years old, is taking one last circumnavigation of the world. Jon stopped at Reunion Island, Cape Town, and St Helena Island, before making his port of call here in the BVI. He is now heading towards Panama.
Competitors in the 2017 BVI Spring Regatta were only too happy to call it quits after one final race on Sunday when extremely light air made for very shifty and challenging conditions.
Little breeze translated to a very hot day so a swim and a cold beer was the perfect race substitute for most of the 86-strong fleet. Final results in several classes came down to the wire in the last race
Eight Graduate New Marine Studies Course
In March, eight students graduated from “Introduction To The Marine Industry”, the first of four courses in the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering & Maintenance course. This is a new marine certification programme run by the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) and Nanny Cay Marina.
After paddling unassisted across the Atlantic on a SUP, landing in Antigua on Thursday 9th March 17, Chris Bertish spoke to an enthralled crowd at Nanny Cay. After 93 days at sea alone, overcoming shark encounters, equipment failures, unfavorable trade winds, loneliness and huge swells, he became the first man to SUP across the Atlantic albeit 26 pounds lighter!
Over the year’s Nanny Cay has been making constant improvements to the facilities, and considerable strides in making itself fully self-sufficient in terms of infrastructural needs.
We are also steadily greening operations where we can.

Pray for no hurricanes! It only takes one... to make a
mess of things.
Posted at the laundry room near the marina docks in East
End:
Look at that shiny new equipment! No rust, no out of order
signs, lights working.
When I first came to the BVI in the 1980's self serve
laundry places like this were not to be found. I sent my clothes out with
a laundry lady who did wash dry fold. Even when self serve laundries popped up,
many were dominated by laundry ladies all day long. If you weren't paying a
laundry lady, you weren't likely to get a hold of a washer or dryer.
In those days, I was so busy working 7 days a week, on sailing
yachts, having a laundry lady was awesome. The rates were ridiculously
affordable back then, but all that has changed now.
I miss my former laundry ladies. They took such good care of
us.

If you can see through the Sahara haze, the BVI poker run is
happening during daylight. The loud roar sure to accompany the
event is just the vroom of go-fast boats racing around playing
poker!
In the tiny print BVI tourism promises a fast and smooth boat
clearance process at customs and immigration. WOW!
Times be changing, mon!
I have been through laborious clearances that required a
picnic lunch in your back pocket before it was over. At times there seemed to be
a crazy resentment and an unwillingness to do anything efficient no matter how
small the boat and crew or how long the line.
Other times when the BVI was way more casual, um, back in the
80's I often cleared in verbally with a certain gentleman who held court at a
beach side bar. At some point over the next few days, I would manage to get my
rubber stamped endorsements and carry on... or maybe not.
These days, that sort of thing could land one in Her Majesty's
Not so Pleasant Prison.
But back in the daze... it was a slower pace, a more of who ya knew to get
ya through and if the purchase of cheap rum sped things up,
that's what we paid. ;)
Now that I think about it... cheap rum is part of the past, not the
present.
When I first landed in the islands, rum was less than a dollar per bottle,
selling at 99 cents on the US side of the Virgin Islands and $1 on the British
side of the island chain.
A lot of happy laid back laughing people in those days and ya never
thought to wonder why...

Message in a bottle, found on
seashore...
Dear Miss Mermaid,
Good morning,
Here is a picture of a waterspout that we
came across last 9 days ago or should I say we ran away from between St. Martin
and the Bvi. It was one of "7", 3 of which touched down and were sucking up
water!! It was quite scary, and we adjusted our course so that instead of
arriving in the BVI we sailed into St. John. Going just 4.5 knots away
from something like that makes you really think about things.
Thought you
could use this, I'm sure you have had your own experiences avoiding
them. Hugs Lori
You are so right. In my sailing days aboard boats afloat
as professional crew and later on my own little 30 foot sailboat, I did
run and hide from those crazy dangerous water spouts that can just sink a
boat faster than you can kiss it goodbye.
Thanks for sharing.

Countdown to hurricane season starting June
1st....
The
Atlantic hurricane season is officially from 1 June to 30 November. There is
nothing magical in these dates, and hurricanes have occurred outside of these
six months, but these dates were selected to encompass over 97% of tropical
activity.
When
the Weather Bureau organized its new hurricane warning network in 1935 it
scheduled a special telegraph line to connect the various centers to run from
June 15th through November 15th.
Those
remained the start and end dates of the 'official' season until 1965, when it
was decided to start at the beginning of the month of June and run until the end
of November.

Another beautiful day in paradise and no hurricanes on the

Tropical storm Arlene came and went like a quick sneeze. Thank

Now back to the fun in rum...
THE
LATEST edition of Caribbean Cookbook brings you a special recipe from the Sugar
Mill Hotel in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. It’s called Breadfruit
Vichysoisse; the Sugar Mill’s Jinx Morgan has more:
At
the restaurant at the Sugar Mill Hotel on Tortola we have our own lush
breadfruit tree that shades the hotel’s entrance and provides our kitchen with
bushels of cannonball-size fruit. We like to think our tree is related to
those that Captain Bligh of the Bounty brought to St. Vincent in 1793 after
surviving the notorious mutiny. In the Caribbean, breadfruit stands in for
potatoes in many dishes, and nowhere more elegantly than in our island
interpretation of a French classic. You can substitute potatoes for the
breadfruit, if you like, and thereby return the dish to its French
origins.
Makes
6 servings
Ingredients:
1/4
cup butter 1 cup minced onions 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 1/2 cups peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped
breadfruit, or 4 slices canned breadfruit, coarsely chopped 4 cups chicken broth 1 cup heavy cream salt and pepper to taste
Garnish:
Thinly
sliced green onions or snipped chives
Directions:
Melt
the butter over moderate heat in a large, heavy pot. Add the onions and
garlic, and sauté them for about 5 minutes, until they are soft and transparent.
Stir in the chopped breadfruit and the chicken broth, and bring the
mixture to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot
tightly and simmer for about 20 minutes, until the breadfruit is tender enough
to be easily mashed against the side of the pan.
In
a blender or food processor or using a hand blender, purée the soup in batches,
with the cream. Season the puréed soup with salt and pepper, and chill the
soup for at least 3 hours. Garnish with sliced green onions or
chives.
The
recipe comes from the Sugar Mill Cookbook by Jinx and Jefferson
Morgan.

Researchers from the United States Geological Survey are
looking at new evidence on Anegada to determine what caused an unusual flood
from the sea that brought ashore large coral boulders around the 1400’s.
The team also observed a series of conch shell mounds with
flat tops on Anegada with the highest found being 12 feet.
“It turns out that the conch shell mounds are probably
connected to the boulders and other evidence of over wash since the flat tops
can be explained by over flow from an extreme event,” Dr. Atwater
explained.

Dear Miss Mermaid chimes in with a story:
Decades ago island life was so safe and peaceful,
there was only one prisoner in the jail.
Someone had reason to call the Police. The guy on the
phone told them that the policeman had stepped out but would be back, and they
would take a message and give it to him upon his return.
"Well who are you?" asked the caller.
The reply, was "I am the prisoner. I answer the phone when
they need help."
Ah don't we all wish for a safer time in the islands.

Subject: SEA CONDITIONS EXPECTED TO IMPROVE EARLY THIS
WEEK
Sea
conditions
are expected to gradually improve this week according to the latest forecast
from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service.
The
Met Service has indicated that sea conditions are now moderate to locally
rough with waves of 6-8 feet. These waves are predicted to subside
gradually. Nonetheless, small craft operators and sea bathers are urged to
continue to exercise caution.
As
a result of the improving sea conditions, Smugglers Cove, Cane Garden Bay,
Brewer’s Bay Josiah’s Bay, Long Bay Beef Island and The Baths have been yellow
flagged. Although these beaches are open, caution must be exercised and
weak swimmers are discouraged from entering the water.
Sea
conditions at Savannah Virgin Gorda, North Shore Anegada and Bubbly Pool Jost
Van Dyke have also improved, however persons are advised to exercise
caution.
Red
Flags are still flying at Long Bay (Tortola), Capoons Bay, Trunk Bay, Rogues
Bay, Lambert Beach & Little Bay. A red flag means danger and there should
be no swimming.
As
it relates to the general weather conditions, the Territory will continue to
be influenced by a surface Atlantic high pressure system and a low pressure
system.
Partly
sunny conditions with periods of increased cloudiness and scattered showers
have been forecasted for today becoming partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy
with scattered showers tonight.
Winds
are blowing from the east to east north east at 19-33 knots per hour with
higher gusts.
The
DDM will continue to monitor these conditions and provide updates.
Road Harbor is well protected today, as it's on the opposite side from
the open seas and beaches.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites when you visit da islands
otherwise you be singing the blues too.
Today at the beach on Jost Van Yikes *oops* Jost Van
Dyke in front of the Soggy Dollar Bar.
Fabulous
blues sung and played with all his heart and soul.
The
guitar solo at the beginning is provocative enough for serious bedroom
athletics.
Having
suffered through dengue fever twice while living in the Caribbean, I can easily
identify with the unique lyrics which describe the horrible misery of fever,
bone breaking aches in the bones as if already broken in a thousands pieces,
coupled with the delirious malady of being forced in bed but the
desire to plunge into the deep blue sea and never surface again. I had dengue
fever so bad once that after a trip to the doctor, I was later found at 4am
asleep on the beach in my dinghy, unable to summon the energy to get myself and
dinghy out to my waiting boat on anchor.
Whether
Jimmie Vaughan is referring to a dangerous woman or the dengue disease is
anyone's guess, but the song is a must have for serious blues lovers and those
amassing enravishing tunes for the bedroom.
Lyrics:
Dengue
woman Stay
away from me Dengue
woman Stay
away from me You
got your fever and you rush Over
me
That's
why Everyday
you bring me misery Everyday
you give me misery I
think about jumpin Jumpin'
in the deep blue see
You
got me all crazy I
can't get outta bed Bones
are achin' Bad
thoughts in my head Dengue
woman Stay
away from me I've
got your aches and things Over
me

Kinda hard to sit on the beach all day drinking rum... if
the beaches are closed! Soon as the crazy weather passes, all will be fun
again!
Long Bay on Beef Island has been red flagged and therefore
closed as a result of the ongoing hazardous sea conditions affecting the
Territory.
This follows the previously announced closures of Smugglers
Cove, Long Bay West End Tortola, Capoons Bay, Brewers Bay, Trunk Bay, Rogues
Bay, Josiah’s Bay, Lambert Beach, Little Bay, the Baths, Cane Garden Bay, North
Shore of Anegada, the Bubbly Pool on Jost Van Dyke and Savannah Bay on Virgin
Gorda.
All beaches under the management of the National Parks Trust
are also closed to bathers, swimmers, snorkelers and paddle boarders until
further notice. The Mooring field is also closed, therefore no access to the
beaches is permitted.
The beach closures are as a result of a huge low pressure
system which is pushing large dangerous swells into the region.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has therefore
issued warnings for sea bathers and small craft operators as swells are expected
to reach 3.0 metres of 10 feet.
A cold front associated with the low pressure system is also
affecting the area and will likely keep the atmosphere unsettled tonight.
Possible rainfall total for the next 24 hours is 0 to 1 millimetres (0 to 0.04
inches).
Weather conditions tonight are forecasted to be partly cloudy
with a moderate or 30% chance of showers before midnight. Partly sunny
conditions are expected tomorrow (Thursday January 12) with a 20 percent or
slight chance of showers.
The Department of Disaster Management continues to advise all
to adhere to these warnings and adjust your activities accordingly. The DDM
will continue to monitor these conditions and provide updates.

not encouraged to enter the water.
Forecasters have indicated that seas up to 12 feet and winds
of 20 knots occasionally up to 25 knots or slightly higher will remain possible
across the regional waters.
Small craft advisories are in effect for all local waters. A
High surf advisory and high rip current risk is in effect for the Virgin
Islands.

- BEACHES ON THE NORTHERN SHORES CLOSED
|
- By DearMissMermaid at aol.com

The Warnings for Small Craft Operators and Sea Bathers issued
by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service last evening remain in effect
as seas are expected to deteriorate across the Virgin Islands tonight (Tuesday
January 10) into tomorrow (Wednesday January 11).
The Met Service says wave heights of 7 to 10 feet (2 to 3
metres) are possible along with high surfs and rip currents, specifically on the
Northern Coasts of the Virgin Islands.
Due to these hazardous sea conditions it is expected that all
beaches will be red flagged and closed before the end of today. This also
applies to the North Shore of Anegada and the Bubbly Pool on Jost Van
Dyke.
Red flags which mean danger and therefore no swimming, are now
flying at Trunk Bay, Rogues Bay, Josiah’s Bay, Lambert Beach, Little Bay and the
Baths.
Please note that all beaches under the management of the
National Parks Trust are closed to bathers, swimmers, snorkelers and paddle
boarders until further notice. The Mooring field is also closed therefore
no access to the beaches is permitted, however the terrestrial trails are still
open for hikers and sight-seers but persons in the Park must follow all
instructions of the Trust Wardens on duty.
All commercial marine traffic going into Virgin Gorda Harbour
may have to be transferred to the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour Marina due to the
sea conditions.
Persons wishing to obtain more details about marine traffic
entering the Virgin Gorda Harbours should contact BVI Ports Authority on
telephone number 494-3435
The hazardous sea conditions are being generated by a frontal
trough which is affecting the area and is also expected to increase the chances
for cloudiness and showers today and tonight.
Small craft operators should refrain from venturing out from
shore due to the sea conditions and persons should ensure that vessels are
secured properly as rough seas could cause them to get loose and damage nearby
property. Businesses and tourism properties that operate close to shore,
especially on the northern coasts, should secure properties and closely monitor
coastal activity for high surge from waves that could potentially cause serious
damage.
The Department of Disaster Management and the Met Service is
strongly advising all to adhere to these warnings and adjust your activities
accordingly.
The DDM will continue to monitor these conditions and provide
updates.
