Just like our neighbours Barbados has been having some serious rain showers with the high winds, for the past few days. Not a good outlook for the upcoming festivities tonight around the island, cold damp and rainy. Could be Wednesday before we see the sun. Anyway still warmer that up in Canada eh! To all my fellow correspondents across the Carribean and Dave and Gert of course, I wish you all a safe Old Years night and a wonderful healthy happy year yet to unfold.

I see from the postings that it has been a very long time since Barbados has posted on line. I guess it is because we have really nothing to report that is detrimental to Barbados. What we have had for months now are rains. We are still getting the sun coming through in between and the temperature is still high. Barbados is green green green. Because of my 4 dogs I am having to cut my grass at least every week it is growing that fast. Just this week there has been a change in the wind and I am sure the trade winds are starting to find there way through. The night time temperatures are a lot cooler and so refreshing. Thank Goodness!

Here on the south coast; squally conditions! It's white-out, small trees are
swaying/ bending.
Judging from the latest satellite picture, it's one of Hurricane Maria's feeder
bands/ tail. Way worse than this morning😳

Wow! Are we ever getting blasted with the wild winds and the rain. Visibility almost down to nil. Trees bending double. This keeps up and I could be losing some of my screens on the WSW side of my house. It is pretty horrific out there - so glad I am now home and not on the road.

Squally conditions being experienced on the southern coast of the island. I'm
about a mile & some from the beach & I can hear the ocean; It's angry alright.
Winds are gusty coming in mostly from the S - SSW - SW - WSW. I not too long
heard on Y103.3 FM that all schools are closed. Everyone be very careful if
you're on the roads.
Stay safe.

Rained all through the night - sometimes very heavy. No thunder or lightening, and hardly any wind. Now the winds are picking up and we are expecting heavier rain this morning. Three inches has fallen already. Flood warning still in effect until at least 12 noon today.

I volunteer at the local shelter for dogs and with this weather keep passing through we have issues with dogs terrified of the thunder boomers. Enough that they are trying to eat their way out of their kennel doors and destroying the wire which is wrecking their gums. Not good.. We were interested in purchasing the thunder jackets that have been around for a few years to help calm them but being a charitable shelter and at $50 US a shirt it is a little out of our reach. We have found and it is proven for our dogs anyway, that a toddler T shirt size 2 or 3 or whatever would fit your dog, two front paws in the arm holes, and the head through the neck, put on and pulled snug against their middle and tied at the top on their back - for some strange reason it is their comfort zone and they can actually relax in a storm and not fear anything. I know this is not for every dog - but it works so far for us, a simple shirt pulling firmly against their belly, which is the point that they get the relief from, and tied securely not too tight on their back, for some reason gives them a sense of calm. It might work for your dog or not - give it a go and see. Anything is worth trying if you can make your dog feel safe and unafraid through the storms we are having one after another.

Dear Jennifer,
even though there are no posts from St. Kitts during this season,
I had a look at the archives page and I found at least
one person reporting from there last year. May be you'll try to

I hope that helped.

As Hurricane Irma approaches the Lesser Antilles, here in Barbados ( South
Coast ) for the last couple of hrs started out with a short-lived Zephyr and a
shift in wind direction coming in from the WSW. It's weird seeing the clouds
move from W to S.
Aircraft have been approaching & landing from E -W as well as takeoff.
We've been having some intermittent showers for a few hrs now. Right now
outside is still and hot.

Hi there from Barbados,
since about an hour (14:00 AST) rain from one of the outer bands of
hurricane Irma (see attachment) is falling in Barbados in intervals.
Let's see what more is to come, rain wise.
However, Anguilla seems to be in for a full hit! Stay safe people over
there! A cat 4 hurricane is not really a cozy thing! I cross my fingers
for Anguilla and nearby islands.

Hi everyone,
Barbados has not been hit equally by the storm. The most damage
happened in the North by flooding, not so much by wind. Whereas
the South of Barbados was spared of major damages. Just one
mysterious thing happened in Providence, Christ Church. About half
of the roof of the "Providence Methodist Church" has been lifted
off and was blown into the village. Residents say "It was a
cyclone", even though the area in general was quite calm, no
strong winds down here and not a lot of rain. However, the MET
Office had forecast the possibility of "mini tornadoes". So it
could have been one what lifted the roof.
I have compiled a web page showing the damages, as far as I got
aware of. You may watch it here.
Stay safe!

We have still not been given the all clear from the met office for people to be outside. They are estimating around 12.30 pm. Reports coming in from different parishes of minor damage, mostly water but definately the brunt of the storm was directed to the top of our island. St. Lucy, St. Andrew and Speightstown was hit very hard. Lots and lots and water, silt and mud everywhere.
Water draining away now, and we have had some sun periodically on the South Coast but also a couple of gusty heavy showers again. So not finished yet.

Hi to all,
at 4:45pm I felt the first wind gusts (see attachment) while I did some
clean-up of lose stuff outside, and then it was calm for a while, a few
short showers later. At the same time I spoke to a friend on the East
Coast and over there was nothing happening. She wasn't even aware that a
storm was literally on our doorsteps, unbelievable!
Now since about 8pm, slight but steady rain."Harvey" is coming - and
right at us, a 12 on the darts.
Everyone may stay safe and dry! I am just hoping, tomorrow morning it
won't read it to be a cat 1 or worse...

I will be going out and up to the animal shelter where I volunteer in the morning to see how all the dogs came through. They are safe in a concrete building but still they have no human to pet them and say they are safe. Hoping they will be just fine and I know they will be happy to see us.

Rain rain and more rain, most of the night and all day. Holetown is posting receiving 105mm and Grantley Adams Airport 40mm. I am in the middle location between the two, but we have had an awful amount. The winds have been changing all day from East, to SE, then back to NE and then SW which is unusual. My garden is under water. It is getting dark now but still raining and I can hear Thunder in the background.

Hello to all,
it is now 1/2 an hour past CPA to Barbados and after that rain and
strong winds on and off all day long everything is nice and calm down
here in the South of Barbados. A gentle cool and constant breeze it
going through the house and cools it down perfectly. Saves me a lot A/C
energy for tonight.
However, there is a good chance that the "show isn't over yet. On the
satellite this system looks really disorganized and some big chunks are
seeming to break off, as Jennifer mentioned down below. I have edited an
animation from Intellicast.com and marked Barbados with a pink circle
around it. It looks like we may be in for some more to come. At least
not a storm, but more rain.
Have a good night out there and try to stay safe and dry.

Tropical storm warnings discontinued earlier today BUT this afternoon the winds were a howling and the rain was something else. For a good 30 minutes - enough for everywhere to be come very sodden. We are now at 5pm still under Flood alert as more rain could possibly fall later tonight with a band that has broken off from the one going through Trinidad the ABC islands.

It started raining in the night here in Barbados - and according to Weather Underground figures for Grantley Adams Airport we have had so far today 62.99 mm I do not know if that is a true figure but it sure has rained non-stop all day - sometimes very heavy. Still raining now as I write.
I was out and about today and many of the roads were waterlogged. Also lots of fender benders. Hopeful for the sun tomorrow.

Since Christmas the weather has been much cooler and wetter than other years that I remember.
Some mornings at 20 degrees with the North wind blowing and rain showers falling - one doesn't want to get out of bed. Usually by mid morning the sun will appear and we still have temps reaching 28 degrees during the day but by late afternoon it really cools off and again the nights have that chill in the air. All things considering this is still much better than having to shovel snow!
