EXTREME heat warning begins at 9 am today. This is our first EXTREME warning
this summer and it is coming an hour earlier in the day.
We see that it didn’t cool down as much overnight. Tonight forecast is 84 f
degrees at 11pm. That is way above normal.
The beach sand is too hot for my normal beach yoga for me. The heat rash is all
over. More Sahara dust has moved in so
it will be cloudy today. Hope that helps. We have less that foot of water left
in cistern, send rain please.
We are still luckier than allot of folks in the world.

- Why wildfires pose multiple threats to US power sector | Reuters
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 23 Jul 2026 14:35:43 -0400
Smoke and wildfires impact how much solar gain can be received by the grid,
just as Sahara dust does here in the Caribbean.
Dark clouds of Sahara dust block natural sunlight needed for our solar systems.
See how far south into the northern edge of the Caribbean the smoke is
dropping? There are places in the southern USA where smoke and Sahara dust are
mingling.

- Trinidad and Tobago signs agreements with US companies that pave the way for data centers
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 14 Jul 2026 14:49:47 -0400
When you are in an extended drought and have island wide rolling blackouts like we do in the Virgin Islands you have to wonder if TNT or any island nation has enough potable water or power for their people in the future ?  This is a weather story. Imagine a data center going thru a Cat 5 hurricane and the aftermath. Imagine a data center built in a low lying area or flood plane? Are data centers compatible with caustic corroding sea air ? Corrosion is the number one issue with metal structures in the Caribbean.

We are either too dry or have near flooding landslide weather off and on most of the time.

This is my 2nd tomato planting of LAST YEAR July 9 2025

JPEG image

This is yesterday. Same planting guidelines. I attribute most of this to the
severe Sahara dust we have had for months. Very dry air. I watered the same
amount as last year. I am pulling the plants today. Imagine what the farmers of
the Caribbean and the world are going thru ? The Jalapeños are trying. The
fruit trees and vines have dropped their blossoms. Water truck soon come. The
pilot said , “ be careful what you wish for”, if it rained hard right now it
would run off the top of the hard packed dry soil. So, we wait. Let us know how
it is going on your island.

I live on the NW side of FORTUNA , St Thomas 640 ft above the ATLANTIC and a
mile back from the sea. See the huge patch of Sargassum sailing east to west.
It will come around the southwest and end up in our marinas and bays on the
southeast side. It is starting to pile up now.
We have a foot of water left in the cistern this morning. Doing a rain dance
every day. Putting water out for the deer, cats, birds and iguanas.
I fed oranges to the oldest iguana yesterday, he was very happy.

Please please no outside burning.

My 2nd small crop of tomatoes are struggling and I pulled up the cucumbers.
Some Jalapeños are hanging on.
The Passion Fruit vine is shriveled up. The Starfruit blossoms have dropped.
The avocado tree is curling.

The inundation of Sahara Dust for months weakened all the plants before
dehydration set in.

We saw some very hopeful cloud buildup yesterday at beach yoga but just a
teasing sprinkle followed .

The water trucks are running night and day. We check the cistern every day.
Nothing Tropical about this weather.
The hillsides are turning brown.

In July of 1995 it was dryer; Hurricane Marilyn came in September that year.

Please keep the birdbaths full.
