Good morning

The remnants of Dolly are here. It's 8:30 in the morning but it still looks dark out there. Thunder and lightning in the area and moderate rainfall.

We are still under a heavy rainfall and flood watch for the next 12 hours so we will see what the day will bring.

It's been hot and very dry and dusty on St Maarten, like most of the northern Caribbean. I can't remember the last time it rained. The hills are brown. Everybody's cisterns are out of water. Thankful for our desalinization plant which is so far keeping up with the need for water.

But between the iguanas and the drought, many plants in my garden are dying, even though we are watering them. We need a really good solid rainfall. We are close to the height of the hurricane season, so I hope we get some decent rain eventually from one of the tropical waves. I hope we don't get a tropical storm, just some decent rain. For me, it should be about the balance of nature, not the extremes of nature. Wishful thinking maybe.

Today is the first day of hurricane season. Hopefully everyone will be safe from any severe storms.

In the meantime, the morning synopsis from our Met Office:

SYNOPSIS:

A thick plume of Saharan dust continues to reduce visibility and degrade air quality across the region. 

Breezy conditions are due to a tight pressure gradient.

Persons with allergies and/or respiratory conditions should are advised to remain alert and take all necessary precautions. 

Small craft operators should exercise caution due to reduced visibility.

SYNOPSIS:
Stable weather conditions will dominate, despite variable cloudiness and the likely overnight shower. Additionally, winds are gradually weakening, and a gentle breeze will prevail. Meanwhile, the concentration of Saharan dust is increasing, with the highest concentration expected overnight. Those with allergies and/or respiratory illnesses should monitor conditions and act accordingly.
