- Days of thunder
  • From: Micho <michosch at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2008 06:44:39 -0500
Hi everyone,

Its raining again here.  This morning around 4am, a massive amount of thunder woke up everyone at my place, except my Husky who was sound asleep!  A fantastic light show and huge claps of thunder.  Its still raining now and there are large puddles pretty much everywhere.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

A very wet day today in Grand Cayman. Island wide, it started raining very early this morning.  It rained very heavily this morning, continued on with "medium rain" this afternoon and this evening is only a light rain ; on and off.  Lots of big puddles to be seen.

Looks like its that tropical depression in central America will be affecting us for few more days before we get good weather.

At least no hurricanes, so I'm happy :-)

- Fabulous weather

Hi everyone,

Not much happening on the weather front in lovely Grand Cayman Island.
Since last week-end, the days have been sunny and hot.  However, I have learned one lesson. On Sunday I decided to wash & wax my trusted Honda CRV.  After I was all was done, it was almost dark and so I simply backed it up into the garage.

The next morning, on my way to work, I got exactly 2 minutes of rain and ruined my wash.  Lesson learned : washing your car during rainy season is a waste of time.

Oh well, its a small price to pay to be living in Cayman

Cheers,

Micho

Good evening everyone,

Still some rain and thunder in Grand Cayman as I type this.  Lots of wave action in George Town today; no snorkeling, swimming or diving for anyone today! I posted a Youtube video of the waves and lightening that we had last night on my blog.

Good morning,

We had a "camera flash" extravaganza last night in Savannah, on Grand Cayman.  Around 1am, the lightening was almost every 3-4 seconds and there was lots of thunder.  Unlike Helen's dog (see posts below), my Husky could not care less about the thunder. Lucky me! :)  While I was looking outside, she stayed on her pillow and slept the whole time.

This morning, lots of small debris on the roads ; palm leafs, some small coconuts, etc. Nothing serious at all but looks like we got a good amount of wind. Lots of large puddles too. Still some light drizzle and dark clouds in the sky.

Cheers

- Lightening, Thunder and Rain!
  • From: helen chawe <helenchawe at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2008 00:10:42 -0700 (PDT)
Well it is now 2am and the lightening is impressive.  Have been to bed but was woken up by the storm.  There is intermitent heavy rain but its mostly constant drizzle.  The thunder is quite loud but the lightening is the worst of the three.  There are several parts of the sky lighting up at the same time..... Have just checked the closest point and it is now the closest point and is 177 miles north of us right now.
Bruno has calmed down now but he really doesn't like the lightening or thunder,  I knew this would happen.  Thank goodness Ray and I are not working tomorrow!  We can sleep in!
Went out last night to see the sunset and it was amazing. Will have to post a photo as it really was gorgeous off the south coast around 6.45pm.  Ok I am going to lay down now for a while and watch the tv.
Thank goodness we have been blessed again and my prayers go out to eveyone that this storm is effecting.

Hi everyone,

Not a drop of rain so far in Grand Cayman.  Was I wrong to expect at least some?
Anyway, outside there is a very pleasant gust ; I opened all the windows to enjoy it and will take the dog for a walk shortly.

Have a nice evening

- CAYMAN BRAC - SOUTH SIDE - EAST
  • From: "mike barcroft" <mbar-cyb at candw.ky>
  • Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2008 17:07:21 -0500

Hurricane IKE’s Closest Point of Approach for Cayman Brac is HERE NOW.

Gusty Winds veering out of SW - WNW at about 15 - 25 MPH (Gust of approx 37.8 MPH recorded, at West End, at approximately 3.30 PM today – highest gust in last hour has been 31.1 MPH).

Barometer rising

Experiencing some wind driven rain and totally overcast skies with cloud base at 1808’ ASL. Surprisingly little rain so far.

Waves on SE Side may be at about 3-4’ with white caps slanting down the Iron Shore from a SW direction.

At this time – certainly feels more windy and stormy (how’s that for hi-tech descriptions J) than any time previously today.

I am sure that conditions on the North Side are rougher but, have already done two trips over there today and am now dry and warm in my house, so will let Carol B report on what is happening there.

Winds are now increasing slightly; essentially, out of the West-veering WSW - WNW at about 12-20 MPH (Gust of approx 31 MPH recorded, at West End, in last hour).

No rain at this time and in fact it is sunny but high cloud bands (2800’ ASL) are clearly visible.

Waves SE Side may be at about 2’ and small white caps starting to appear.

At this time – really quite a pleasant day on the Brac.

Various Businesses and Govt Admin etc intending to close down earlier than normal and shutters are up.

Hi everyone,

Cayman Brac & Little Cayman are now under a TS warning.
Here in Grand Cayman its still a TS watch.

In Grand Cayman (I am in George Town), its nice and sunny with a lite breeze. Very few clouds for now but looking to the north these seems to be lots of cloud action ; the rain may be on the way.

Seems as though the Outer Fringes of Hurricane IKE may already be affecting Cayman Brac – just had a gusty and heavy rain shower pass over and thunder continues to rumble in background.

Wind appears to be out of NW and at this time is gentle and cooling – may have gusted to 15 MPH during recent shower – sea is calm but small wave motion already setting in from the West seemingly – that always look so strange and obvious on the SE Side of the Brac .

Skies are leaden grey horizon to horizon and there are definitely more rain showers/squalls imminent.

Still feel that this is going to be a bout of unpleasant weather for us as opposed to a “roaring storm” – hope I am right – but eyes open just in case.

At this time, cannot find anything on CI Gov Web Sites – Cayman Prepared etc, nor, have I received the supposed e-mail advisory???

Helen – where did u hear this information and what was actually said barring TS Watch declared – cannot even get Radio Cayman where I live on the Brac.

Not particularly worried at this stage - spoke with certain clients yesterday and sent a Notice out to them late evening advising them that Cayman would experience some effects from Ike.

Waiting and watching to see what Cuba does to Ike (strength and track) and what effects Jamaica goes thru.

[Hank send some pictures before which I posted earlier. This is what he had to say about his experiences during the storm (Gustav) -Gert]

Hello Gert, my name is Hank Blagen and I am the Marine Parks Officer on Little Cayman, my wife Jane is back in the States and she was a Storm Caribe contact. I have attached some pictures of the damage here on Little Cayman for your information. I live on the north shore at Mary's Bay and other than a very scary night and lots of water coming in around my kitchen door, I had no major damage. What I am hearing here is that the storm passed around twenty miles to the south as a cat 2 with wind gusts to 125 mph. No injuries here on the island but as you can see lots of property damage. I lost power at 5:00 pm Friday night and It was just restored this evening, phone lines will take a couple of weeks. I have internet here at my office in Blossom Village, it came on line this afternoon. I would be happy to report to you if we encounter another storm (god forbid). The Island was well prepared, and that really saved a lot of grief. I must commend the Brac Power and Light local crew for their hard work getting on the damage, when they came by my house they got all the cool beer that I had! We have crews in from Grand Cayman helping with restoration as well, and they are working their asses off! Power will off on the south east part of the island for some time as it took the brunt of the storm. Look forward to hearing from you and keep up the good work keeping us Islander's informed, it is invaluable. Cheers Hank

- CAYMAN - SISTER ISLANDS UPDATE
  • From: "mike barcroft" <mbar-cyb at candw.ky>
  • Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2008 13:21:59 -0500

POST GUSTAV – SISTER ISLANDS UPDATE

Please note that I am on CYB so information on LYB is by means of statements form appropriate parties and Island residents are more likely to be able to paint a proper picture of how it is on LYB.

CYB - Electrical Power - CBPL:

100% recovered – may be slight outages as unexpected problems are uncovered and or Connections to residences are made (replacement of Weather Heads is an electrician’s job and not the responsibility of CBPL). 6 Poles were downed (1 on Bluff, 1 on West Bluff Rd [to Airport near Water Authority], 4 in SW area).

Very rapid recovery achieved for major part of North Side and SE Side well within 24 hours of GUSTAV Strike – gr8 work!!

LYB – Electrical Power – CBPL:

85% recovered – Power restored to all Hotels, Condos, Restaurants and Govt Buildings. 11 Poles downed and 5 damaged and need to be replaced.

CUC “reinforcements” from GCM  deployed to LYB which needed the most work.

Congratulations to all at CBPL on CYB & LYB for hard work in hot sticky weather!!

CYB – Communications – Cable & Wireless:

Cell system essentially remained up throughout; International Fibre/Cable links remained up throughout.

98% recovered – work continues hard to achieve 100% ASAP. Met a C&W crew on SE Side, yesterday afternoon, by the side of the road carrying out Fibre Optic Splicing on a temporary table in the blazing sunshine – not ideal conditions by any means – but gr8 work guys!

LYB – Communications – Cable & Wireless

75% recovered – work continues hard to achieve 100% ASAP.

C&W “reinforcements” from GCM  deployed to LYB which needed the most work.

Note that C&W tend to be slightly behind Power Company in some areas as they need CBPL to restore/replace Poles in order to rehang/replace phone lines.

CYB – Water Authority

Water Authority had to temporarily shut down some service in order to repair broken Pipes/Taps (on smashed Piers etc) in order to prevent continual loss of water pressure in the systems – this has been achieved although other “surprises” may still occur.

CYB – Clean Up

Hard work by, and cooperation between Public Works, DEH and “joe blow citizen” have achieved marvels and parts of the Island are fresh and pristine again.

CYB- Law & Order

Police were obviously present throughout – but, thankfully, I have not heard of them having to deal with any unruly events! Thanks to RCIP and all other Agencies who played a part in helping to ensure our safety.

CYB – People

Seemingly pretty much back to normal and going about their daily work, interspersed for some, by hours of “sweat equity” with chain saws, yard brooms etc.

General Impressions

It would seem that SW CYB and all of LYB were in the Right Front Quadrant of GUSTAV and suffered the most damage – for a change, the damage to the SE of CYB was relatively light. Although I have no figures to categorically prove it, some damages look as thought they resulted from Winds in excess of Cat 1 Force Winds – rumours abound of 120MPH Gusts but I cannot state any facts on this

I have the following information from a Bracker who lives on the Brac and has been through Gustav. There have not been many postings from the Sister Islands as everyone there is very busy and concerned about clean up, trying to restore plants that have uprooted and taking care of their properties and businesses. She says:

“I was out today on work related matters in Cayman Brac. There has been some damage to some houses on the South Side in particular however, there have been no reports of any fatalities and most people are now in recovery mode - clearing fallen trees, repairing roof damage, power lines are being repaired. www.caymannewsservice.com is an excellent source of up to date news.”

In addition she has tried to identify some of the photos of Cayman Brac that were recently posted (Do not let me know if they are incorrect – this is best efforts on her part!):

Cayman Brac

Power is back to about 95% of the Island.  Roads are pretty much cleared and things are getting back to normal.    Most businesses  opened for business today and everyone is working together to get things cleaned up around the Island.

Little Cayman (as reported by Richard McElhannon)

From Kingston Bight and the Power Plant going west there is now full power except Spot Bay Road.  There is no power from the Crossroad going east.  Public works arrived today and they have commenced cleaning all the roads of debris.  A crew from CUC arrived to assist Little Cayman  Power and Light with their tremendous task.  The Bank has now been relocated until the Village Square complex gets a new roof. A few roads (dirt) were washed away and there are still numerous power poles down blocking roads. No homes had any major damage, mainly roof shingles, tiles etc.

I decided to go for a drive around the east end & north side loop of Grand Cayman.  Although there is not that much damage just like the rest of the island, they did get more wind/wave action from what I can see.

On the Queens Highway, probably the worse of what happened ; about 10-15 utility poles were knocked down which would explain the power failure there.  The utility company has already planted new poles and will most likely have everything in order by this afternoon.  Bravo!

IMG_5973.jpg

Morritt’s sign took a bit of a beating.

IMG_5977.jpg

Then east end public beach is littered with rock, coral and seaweed.

IMG_5978.jpg

The kite surfing dudes are out today.  Quit windy in the east end (often is …)

IMG_5980.jpg

Nice jump!

IMG_5987.jpg

Gorgeous day today.  Nice warm and sunny.  All the best to the people in Gustav’s track.  It’s not going to be pretty L

  • From: "Christopher McTaggart" <chrismctaggart at caymanairways.net>

Location – George Town, next to the Owen Roberts Airport

Hi All,

Hope everyone is doing well out there. I must say it is such a quiet night tonight compared to last night this same time. Today was a very hectic day after the all clear was given to the Island. We spent many busy hours at work reorganizing and rescheduling crew and aircraft from an Evacuation Schedule to a hopefully normal schedule operation starting tomorrow Sunday August 31.

Today we brought our aircraft back to Grand Cayman from Miami and Tampa starting at around 2:00 pm. We then scheduled a flight to Cayman Brac to take the CUC Electrical line workers and other residents up to assist with the damage in the Sister Islands. In addition we operated our scheduled evening flight to and from Miami. Although a lot of thought and planning has gone into the change over plan to Normal Operation, I am sure it will actually take a few days to settle back down to what was normal before Gustav.

Grand Cayman – No further reports of any problems as the day progressed. At around 2:00 pm we had a torrential downpour island wide which lasted about 45 minutes. As the evening came on the skies were filled with a high cirrus overcast and some scattered Cumulus rain clouds straggling behind Gustav passed by. Tonight a very short and brief rain at about 9:00 pm.

Current Conditions – Winds Southerly at 12-18 MPH. Temperature 83 degrees. Pressure 1006 mb slight fall trend. Cloud Base Scattered at 1400 feet AMSL and a high overcast.

Cayman Brac /Little Cayman – More confirmation was received about the damage in the sister islands as the day progressed. Cayman Brac only has lights east of the Power Plant on the north coast, all other areas are without power. Line personnel advised me this evening that they expect to get the hotels on the south side back with power by tomorrow evening. Most damage reported in the Brac was water damage to places along the south coast of the island. The majority of the docks and beach bars at these establishments were also destroyed.

Little Cayman got the worst of it all and are still without power island wide. Most of the hotels and homes on the south coast also experienced water damage and in some case had the beach as a part of the interior décor. I was told that all the docks in Little Cayman are either gone or have major damage. On both islands lots of vegetation damage as would be expected.

Current Conditions – Winds Southeasterly at 8-15 MPH. Temperature 80 degrees. Pressure 1005 and steady. Cloud Base Scattered at 1400 feet AMSL and high overcast.

Well as you all know Gustav did make the CAT 2 as it passed Cayman and sped away intensifying very rapidly to now what is a major CAT 4 hurricane, and no reason around to slow it down now since it has cleared Cuba. Everything in its path now is nothing but warm Gulf waters which allows it to maintain or build strength. I expect to see Gustav reach CAT 5 before the Gulf Coast but will not maintain the status very long, as there is an area of much warmer water midway between his present position and the coastline. Arrival at the Gulf Coast I am forecasting to be somewhere between Beaumont, Galveston and Corpus Christi, will be at a strong CAT 4. Pin pointing a smaller area of contact is very difficult now as there is no steering factors so he is wide open on his own momentum. My forecast is only based on earth’s rotating gravitational effect, some warmer areas of water, and a little addition of the upper level flow pattern. Other than that, flip a coin.

I will check in tomorrow sometime, but I will be busy back at the airline most of the day with continuing to put the operation back into full swing. Everyone take care and have a good night.

Regards,

Chris

Location: Crewe Road, Grand Cayman, near Owen Roberts Airport

Gustav is now history for the Cayman Islands.  Cayman Brac and Little Cayman took the 'brunt' of the storm. We are a resilient people and will recover quickly.
As we say 'it could have been worse'.

Both Owen Roberts International and Gerrard Smith Airports are now open.  Cayman Airways flights arrived from Tampa and Miami and then departed for the Brac and Miami earlier this evening.

This year is the first decent crop of fruit I have had since Hurricane Ivan. The winds knocked breadfruit, Avocados, June Plums and Mangoes off the trees in my yard.  I picked up about 60 avocados, (not all shown they are in bags) and 8 breadfruit (had roast breadfruit lunch) and a few mangoes, as I'd picked mangoes before the storm.  My kitchen now has a sweet mango aroma :-)

Thanks to those who posted photos with their informative posts.  I am thankful Gustav was not a Cat 4 or 5 when passing through the Cayman Islands, but I think of the people living in the Isle of Youth and Western Cuba who are taking and have taken a beating with 150 mph winds and humongous waves of Gustav.  Florida is also being impacted with this "monster".  Gustav is now exiting the north coast of Cuba as can be seen on the Key West radar and heading for the Gulf Coast.

http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/radar.php?rid=BYX&product=N0Z&overlay=11101111&loop=no

If you live in areas along the Gulf Coast that are in the cone you are at risk. If you are near the coast and reading this and your authorities recommend  evacuation, you will want to do so now! Don't wait until the last minute.
I do note on the TV news, evacuations are taking place in New Orleans.

Those of you on the East Coast, especially Florida, Heads Up, TS Hanna is heading your way.

Current Conditions:
Partly Cloudy (Stars shining :-) )
Wind  SW 15-20 mph with higher gusts
Temperature 82°F
Humidity 85%
Rainfall.  (My rain gage seems to have messed up it shows 8" and I know that is incorrect)
Barometer 1006.8 hPa 29.73 in

Have a wonderful evening.

Title: Marina Drive, Prospect, Grand Cayman

Hi,

Wow, what a difference 24 hours makes. I look at my post that I made at 10:00pm last night, and what we were going through then, and what it's like now. Night and day!

This week was focused on Gustav, and as a result very little else got done. We turn our thoughts and prayers to our friends in Cuba, and beyond in the US.

Below is a combination of the 2 pictures of just about the same spot that I took of the canal. The one on the left about 14 hours before the one on the right. You can see the normal sea level, and on the left you see that the level is up at least 2 feet, and spilling onto land where it doesn't belong! The mangrove tree is not quite as lush as it was.

All the best,

Arthur

While an All Clear has been declared and is in effect for Grand Cayman,
Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) is advising Sister Islands'
residents that although weather conditions have improved sufficiently to
permit residents free movement, only those with no alternative should be on
the roads at this time.

On the south side of Cayman Brac, roads are still being cleared, while on
the north side utility repairs are currently underway.

On Little Cayman most roadways are still blocked and crews are working to
clear debris.

While HMCI appreciates the public's desire to check on property and the well
being of friends and family, it is in the interest of all Sister Islands'
residents to have utilities restored and roads cleared at the earliest
possible time.

Staying off the roads will keep residents safe and allow repair teams to do
their work unhampered.

HMCI will announce a complete All Clear for the Sister Islands at the
earliest possible time.

It the weather is quickly improving, I went for a drive to get some pictures, I've attached them to this message. It seems like Grand Cayman got lucky last night. I'm not sure that the Isle of Youth will be so lucky. The pictures are of the north coast, at the turtle farm launching ramp where a lot of the fishing pictures i post are taken. The shutters are coming off gas stations and supermarkets. Knowing the island, I'm betting that a few places will be open for a couple of cold ones!
For those in front of Gustav, take care. Peak of hurricane season is still a week or two away so be prepared!
Chow for now.

Hi Everyone,

I waited to see the wind switch last night to confirm that Gustav was moving away which I finally went in at 3:30 am. Been busy calling family and my flight crew to make sure all okay with them, hence my late post.

Grand Cayman – We had windy condition and a maximum indicated wind in gusts of around 70 MPH. Have not heard of any major damage on grand Cayman. Not much rain was experienced here in Cayman and not surprised as Gustav was intensifying and pulling everything to the center when crossing the area. No fatalities reported.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman – The Sister Islands experienced very high winds and definitely took a big blow. I monitored winds in excess of 75 MPH via a link, however I got a report that the Aston Rutty anemometer recorded 90 MPH in gusts. Both Islands are without power and major utility damage, poles, lines, etc. Resort damage reported in Little Cayman and most docks damaged or gone. No fatalities reported.

Have to get to the airline to organize operations. Will advise further info as soon as I get some spare time, maybe this evening.

Gustav is pulling northwest and intensifying rapidly as I thought he would.

Talk later,

Best regards to all,

Chris

In Savannah, Grand Cayman ... no damage that I can see.  Some very minor stuff, but nothing of note.   I think we were very lucky. The gully did not fill up and to my great surprise no flooding in Savannah.  Amazing!

I uploaded 3 new Youtube video's of wave action around 10-10:30 of Smith Cove (south sound), George Town (Eden Rock) and Seven Mile beach.

They can be found here :

Thanks everyone for your emails and support!  I greatly appreciated it

From Stake Bay, Cayman Brac

Gustav has pretty much passed by but still getting heavy rains and wind squalls.  Damage to the North Shore is mainly downed trees, damage to roofs and power lines in the road everywhere.  South Shore took it hard with Brac  Reef’s dock and dock bar gone, Divi’s dock gone, power poles across the road (including transformers), boats up on shore, etc.  We just got power back on this side of the Island but will take awhile I think for the south side.  Cleanup crews are already out working in the rain to remove trees and debris from the road.  Power company workers have been out since early this a.m. fighting the battle.

It is around 9 am. Glad the nite is over. It seemed to have been a long on
e but not as long as the Sister Islands had. Here in
Omega Bay/Patrick's Island area, the canal last nite was over my dock but d
id not go any further. The canal is basically a
north/south canal and during the last nite the north wind and gusts gave
the canal a 2/3 foot chop. When the wind shifted
at 2am to the NW the canal went calm - amazing. Had power all the time with
little surges now and then. this morning
taking a walk in the yard and looking around, all looks fine in the neighbo
urhood. I lost a branch from a tree which
happened in the west wind. Most of the young breadfruits are on the ground.
Seems my trees and bushes took more of a
beating from the NW and W winds. Radio Cayman did real good all nite with
reports. There were power outages in small
areas around Grand Cayman from 10pm last nite. But all in all most had power.
The sun just tried to peek through, but we
are still in cloud cover and so far no rain in the past couple of hours. Wind
is now W/SW. Hear Georgetown Harbour is rough
and water/waves in the street. Government is advising that the All Clear has
not been given and to please stay at home.
That is it for now. thank you all for been concerned for us and thanks to Gert
for this website. Hope all will be safe when
this gets to the USA. Donna

Hope these Latest photos from our beach looking west come up .

Seems no damage but as the winds move round we might get some more wave
action but hope not much. Lots of tree damage but otherwise all seems ok.

This was the bulletin issued 8am

Little Cayman took the brunt of the storm but thankfully it appears there
are no major injuries on all three islands. Gustav, now a category 3
hurricane, is strengthening as it moves away from the Cayman Islands. The
storm will continue to affect Grand Cayman for at least five hours. Grand
Cayman is still experiencing heavy winds, with strong gusts, and waves with
heights of 14 to 16 feet. Crews have already begun initial damage
assessments and debris clearance.

Hi Gert

Appreciate your posting. I am currently in a Condo on Seven Mile Beach across from Fosters (Grand Cayman). Water level is not high up. Damage is limited to the tops of some palm trees coming down but folks are on the road and lizards are up and about. Seemed to have passed without too much damage other than a bit of plant debris.

Well all is well at Shore Way Town Homes in West Bay. I managed to sleep thought the night. We had some good winds and rain but that seems to be it. I just got a call from a friend closer to the beach. So it sounds like the beach is pretty rough but that's to be expected! I'm going for a look see if a bit and I'll updated then. For me in West Bay power was on all night ac was running fine! Thoughts to the people in the Brac and Little Cayman, looks like Gustav has found it's momentum. I hope all in Cuba and beyond are ready for this guy!
Going out with the camera so I'll have some wave pictures in a bit.

We just had a very quick look around outside but we didn’t get too far as we were hit with fairly heavy wind and rain from the west as we went around the front of the house! From what we can see everything looks good around us and close by homes in Governor’s Harbour  (Grand Cayman). At a quick glance the rain has prevented everything from going brown as it did following Dean last year.  Our most recent report from the Cayman Islands Emergency Operations Centre at 5AM states Grand Cayman can expect to experience TS force winds until around 1PM (Sister Islands until 9AM), and over the next 24 hours waves heights of 14-16ft and rain through to tomorrow with accumulation of 2-4 inches. Nice that daylight has come again, although I can’t recall us never losing power before in a similar type storm so THANK YOU CUC!!!!! What a difference it makes not to have to sit and wait in the dark and the heat.

In case I do not post again, thanks to the other correspondents who kept us and everyone else informed. We need to recruit a couple of North Siders and East Enders as well.

Good Morning,

GOODBYE GUSTAV! A most annoying weather system.

Not sure how, but I managed to sleep last night despite all of the noise!
Power remained on all night with quite a few brownouts (not enough to make my
UPS's kick in though).

I've taken a walk around my yard, and saw a few broken limbs from my trees
*sigh* Over the next few weeks I'm sure all of the leaves will drop off due to
the salt spray, and battering. The cleanup starts.

Thankfully the canal in this area has gone back to normal levels (will post a
pic a bit later on to compare to my picture from last night).

Was so sad when I heard that some folks had sea water from the canal in their
homes in North Sound Estates.

Its 6:30am in George Town, Grand Cayman.  Its raining mildly, there is some rain and the infamous bush chickens are up & about ... going about their regular business. Good sign I guess :-)  Sky still very dark, so the rain is probably not over.

I just went outside quickly and from what I can its probably not bad at all ; although I am in an area with office buildings so I may not be getting an accurate picture.  Most of the palms/trees are fine and all standing, some small debris on the road.

Just took a walk outside and while it's windy, the neighborhood looks good. There were intermittent heavy wind gusts and some rain squalls - short but intense. Only temp is being recorded on my weather station. Time to go back to a wired model! :-)
Electricity and telephone is working.  Roofs look good in my area. Mainly banana trees seems to be down.
Will have a better idea when the sun comes up in 2 hours.

My very light sleep was interupted just a bit ago by something hitting the shutters outside the bedroom. I went outside to have a look....everything is still in place as far as I can tell...Did not see what hit the shutters, still fairly strong wind gusts and pelting rain...One of the doors on my garden shed was bent around so I took it off and brought it inside....Hopefully the shed will stay put...It is weighed down with sand bags on top and full inside with stuff. As soon as the winds die down a bit more, I will go back out and see whatever else has happened...

Thankful to still have power and water! It's now 2:38 a.m.

Hi again,

Well Gustav made it to Cat 2 as I thought it would, just as it was crossing the Cayman Area. This is based on NOAA 2:15 update:

DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT

GUSTAV CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN AND NOW HAS MAXIMUM WINDS NEAR 100

MPH...155 KM/HR WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  THIS MAKES GUSTAV A CATEGORY TWO

HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE.

Nothing more to report so far here in Grand Cayman, conditions the same.

Had a bit of a snooze and I awake to find power still going and the winds not quite as strong. There are lots of gusts but not the constant racket we had earlier. Sorry to see that it has strengthened to a Cat 2 for the areas beyond Cayman. No sign of the harbour water here breaching the wall. I have limited visibility at my location at Governor’s Harbour in Grand Cayman between shutters and the darkness but I can look  across our patio. It is raining somewhat and blowing but otherwise seems ok out there.

Morning All,

Did not post before as for some weird reason kept loosing DSL connection. Anyway took a nap so I could get up to check out the expected worse at time of crossing. So far all is well here and  we continue to have power and all other utilities. The winds are certainly howling and its gusty out there but nothing major. We have had very little rain and no thunderstorm activity, just a steadily increasing wind since I last posted. Here are the current conditions:

Grand Cayman – Winds N-NW at 35 MPH steady with gusting to 47 MPH. Maximum winds recorded 55.2 MPH. Very little rainfall, total 0.44 inches. Temperature 78 degrees. Pressure 993.2 mb and showing a falling trend. Cloud Bases 1400 AMSL.

Cayman Brac (Sister Islands) – Winds SE at 25 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH. Maximum winds in last hour recorded 48.3 MPH. Rainfall in last hour 0.20 inches. Temperature 54.3 degrees (Cool). Pressure 993.2 and showing increasing trend. Cloud Bases 580 feet AMSL.

Well I would say without looking at the satellite image that Gustav is getting to be at its closest point to Grand Cayman and is moving away from the sister islands based on the wind shift. Very little rainfall over the past few hours which indicates to me a steady building process for the storm. Waiting to see the 2 am update. Have not heard any radio calls relative to the wave action but I would imagine it is kicking up some big ones. The Brac recording of temperature is amazing, wonder if the station has malfunctioned, but does not appear to be looking at the overall readings.

So nice to continue to have power (hats off to CUC) and of course good to have all utilities. Occasionally I see dips in the power but majority of the time steady.

Will be up for awhile so and will post before I go nap again.

Regards,

Chris

  • From: Tara Thompson <cheekytaz at candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2008 00:23:39 -0500
This is the first opportunity to report for me as I gave birth on Tuesday to a gorgeous little boy!! My son & I are at GT hospital, which is very secure and safe thank goodness! I wandered downstairs whilst the wonderful pedriactric ward staff kept an eye on my son to find the winds blowing quite forcefully outside. I couldn't see any rain though but the access to the outside weather conditions is limited, which is a probably a good thing.

I hear different reports for various other areas of the island, one being that an area near the sailing club is flooded due to wave action.

Hopefully it will pass pretty soon and we can thank our lucky stars that we were not directly in the line of fire, which is more than can probably be said for our sister islands and of course wherever else Gustav decides to venture next.

Stay safe all.

Love to my husband at home (just off Walkers Road - South Sound end) where apparently the electricity just came back.

I concur that while the radar images (http://www.weatherincayman.com/) make
Gustav look like a brutal beating to Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, I was
finally able to find updated information that shows damage but not too bad:

http://www.caymannetnews.com/
- Middle story: Latest Storm Updates (paragraph below and "read more" link)

of Little Cayman or 55 miles east-northeast of Grand Cayman. The storm is
moving northwest near 10 mph with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph and
some further strengthening is likely tonight.

Cayman.

Utilities: Sporadic power outages have been reported in West Bay. The power

safe to do so. At 5pm in Cayman Brac piped water was turned off.

Infrastructure: The road south of Moritts is reported to be blocked by sand.

We have not had too much rain lately but just now we are getting some driving rain. The winds are stronger and we can see the water in Governor’s Harbour blowing across. Power still on here in this area of Grand Cayman and I can see lights across at Crystal Harbour as well.  The 11PM NHC (10PM local) has it 55 miles NE of Grand Cayman. Appears the eye has gotten bigger as  has the total wind span. This is going to be one big Gustav as it heads past us. Some really strong gusts coming now.

Title: High Tide - Marina Drive, Prospect, Grand Cayman

Hello,

Well, we're weathering well here in Prospect, Grand Cayman.

I'm near the canal, and noticed across the road that the vacant lot was filling with water rather quickly. I took a stroll, and saw that the sea was lapping over the top of the canal edge. I ran back inside to grab the camera, took a few shots (see below). After going back inside I once again looked out over the vacant lot, where I was walking on dry land was now completely submerged. Normally there's at least 2 feet between the canal edge and the canal. ACK!

The good thing is that this is happening on the falling tide (high tide was at 8:32 GMT-5), so hopefully it won't come any higher.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone!

Regards,

Arthur

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman must be taking this one. I've got power cable internet and water!
I just got back from a drive to check water conditions. It's blowing no doubt. Made me wish I had some highwind wind surfing equipment.

So far so good, we'll see what tonight brings. I'm glad we got Gustav at this stage of it's life, don't want a major hurricane this year.

Hi All,

Just got word from Cayman Brac that both themselves and Little Cayman are now without power. Reports of large trees blown down but did not catch in which area. Winds are being reported out of the North-northeast 045 degrees at 45 and higher in gusts with frequent times of heavy rain. Reports from Little Cayman are verbal but say they are having heavy winds and the wave action is very high.

Latest Cayman Brac readings – Winds NE at steady at 40 higher in gusts, maximum gusts recorded 63.3 MPH. Rainfall 3.95 inches. Temperature 72.7 degrees. Pressure 988.8 mb and falling. Cloud bases 300 ft AMSL.

Been advised by command center that the Hurricane Hunters are now scanning and operating in the Cayman Area. Teal 72 is the aircraft working the late shift.

Chris

I was just having a last peek before it gets too dark. Governor’s Harbour water is pretty rough and the waves are splashing up over the sea wall across from us at Crystal Harbour. Darker clouds around but not much rain in the last while. Jamaica is still getting rain so I guess there is lots more to come. The winds are progressing steadily but we are not expected to have the worst of them until around 2AM. Power and water are on so all is good at the moment.

- Hurricane Gustav - 28/08/08 5:00 pm
  • From: "Chris McTaggart" <cmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 18:02:24 -0500

Hi Everybody in Carib Land,

Well it’s the 5:00 o’clock update and with all the Hurricane Hunters transmitting back accurate data we now see Gustav has become once again a Hurricane.  Data from an air force reconnaissance aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with higher gusts, which makes Gustav a category one hurricane. Suspecting overnight continued strengthening with this storm and expect that borderline Cat 2 when crossing the Cayman Islands as I posted earlier yesterday. Hurricane winds are now extending 30 miles with Tropical Force winds as far outward as 160 miles. Gustav is now well on the way now towards rapid development, and has all the ingredients required. We should now see a continuous but slow drop in central pressure on an hourly basis as intensification continues, and forward speed should now start to stabilize. I will stick with my 3 day old forecast of passing just east of Grand Cayman between the sister islands and continuing across the western tip of Cuba and finally into the Texas coastline between Houston and San Antonio.

Grand Cayman – Of course we have had the visual bank of clouds I posted about at 12:00 move in from the east. A few bands of brief heavy downpours (not Island wide) and clouds continue to get more dense as the sun sets. Winds have been steadily picking up and are currently out of the East-Northeast at 20-25 MPH. Having on and off drizzle conditions.

Sister Islands – Listening to the authorities on my scanner I have heard reports that the Brac and Little Cayman are experiencing much higher winds and more frequent bands of rain. I did hear a transmission that the wave action is really picking up and as one transmitter said, it looks like Hawaii Five O. J All utilities on the Sister Islands are still operating normally with some arcing of lines reported in gusty conditions.

The curfew is in effect (5:00 pm) and again will remain in effect until the all clear is given. CUC radios are going constantly and I did hear the management advise the local authorities that they would monitor line conditions and only shutdown areas that indicated a problem. They will continue to provide power and no specific shutdown has been scheduled. As they said “we will play it by ear and only do what is necessary”. Thanks CUC, that does make a big difference to us!

I will try to post as many times as possible throughout the night to give everyone an idea of what is being experienced.

By the way as Gert requested – I am located just opposite the airport in Grand Cayman on Crew Road but I will pass on any other information I hear for other areas and the sister Islands.

Have a good evening.

Regards,

Chris

We have been losing power,  on and off,  for the past 3 hours.  Winds are very strong with higher gusts.   Grey skies and very gloomy looking.  Just talked to Richard McElhannon in Little Cayman. The winds are increasing  and swinging from NE to NW. Because of the position of my anemometer, ( I had to lower the pole and trees have grown and are blocking the wind) these readings may not reflect the true wind speed when standing outside. I just came from a drive to my store and would estimate winds are 15 -20 knots based on the windsock at the airport. Some clouds are beginning to roll in and an outer band passed by but no rain at my location.  Temperatures are lower now 89°F thanks to the overcast, from a high of 92°F.

Gustav has decided to take a more north westerly course according to the NHC forecast track, and is forecast to pass much closer to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The latest position puts Gustav passing 35 miles from the sister islands in about 12 hours and 60 miles NE of Grand Cayman in about 17 hours.

Since the last two NHC advisories has the storm closer to the Brac and L.C. , the most recent announcement has no curfew being declared. I also heard on the marl road however, that the police want a curfew in effect from 6PM (that is not from any official source for those of you not familiar with the marl road). I always prefer a curfew as it keeps the thrill seekers who end up risking emergency personnel’s lives and those who are up to no good looking off the roads.

A little strengthening means likely hurricane force winds for the two Sister Islands. For Grand Cayman so far strong Tropical force winds are expected. We will know more in a few hours.

Gusts out here in Governor’s Harbour are getting stronger but the breeze seems to be fairly consistent.

I have also heard (marl road again) about power going off at 6PM. I have not heard that on Radio Cayman or any official source. A little surprising given the comments only a couple of hours ago from the Leader of Government business, but as we all know by now, things change very rapidly. Hopefully any communications will be prompt.

More later.

Wind is starting to pick up, airport say NE at 20mph. Looking at Gustav we should start to see more cloud cover soon. The sun is still out here in West Bay for now.  it looks like the sister islands might see the business end of this storm.
Heard that CUC will be turning the power off tonight. It'll be some time before I can get the generator out, so I'll update until the power goes out. Then we'll hopefully sleep but I would image that I'll just stare up at the ceiling most of the night.
Stay tuned for more

Hi All,

Forgot to mention that I still expect Gustav to continue a west-northwest track as reorganizing occurs and passing east of Grand Cayman around 30-40 miles. This path is right in between Grand Cayman and the sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The sister islands will experience heavier winds being that their location will be on the north-northeast quadrant of the storm.

Regards

Chris

Winds are starting to come up a bit now, and the waves a bit choppy but
nothing much so far. It's the waiting and not knowing that's so
aggravating, not knowing if its going to turn, or get stronger or move
faster.

We are all battened down except for one window which we will leave as long
as possible so we can see whats happening on the beach outside and after
that it will be like livening in the Black Hole of Calcutta!! Hope our
power doesn't go out.

Ann

- Gustav Update - Aug 29, 2008 12 noon
  • From: "Christopher McTaggart" <chrismctaggart at caymanairways.net>

Dear All,

My apologies I was so late coming in last night I never had time to get on the computer as I was tired so I did not post as promised. The days operations with so many flights was stressful but went very smooth and certainly the flights were bang on-time which was a coordinated effort from very dedicated staff. Very proud of the operation overall.

Well Gustav is now spreading his wings and stretching as expected once he clears all the high terrain encounters which is obvious due to the spread of the tropical storm winds out to now 140 miles from the original 30. Intensification will now occur as he travels the open water, warm and deep, towards Cayman. Still expecting a Cat 1 on crossing with major building west of our area. I see a very large, powerful storm passing through the gulf for the Texas coastline.

News is that Gustav has left 11 dead in the island of Jamaica which is very sad, however it does show that even minimal storms can be very dangerous. I know most of these happened in the area of Portland which is very prominent for landslides.

The last flight bound for Miami left just at around 10:30 am and all our aircraft will remain there until the all clear is given and then the company will re-group for the organization of resuming operation.

Just about noon here and we still have sunny skies a gentle but constant wind out of the east at around 15 MPH. Skies have mostly high cirrus clouds however cloud formation is visible in the distant southeast.

Not much to report here at this time and I have a few things left to do. Certainly overall the island seems very much organized and all Hurricane Plans throughout were implemented well in advance. Will post later this afternoon as things start to change.

A curfew will be in effect starting at 6:00 pm this evening and will continue until the all clear is given.

Have a good day.

Chris

Dear Everyone in Grand Cayman

I have just had a frantic phonecall from Tracy at the Humane Society they have 14 dogs (mostly puppies) that need a home during Gustav's passing.  They come with crates, food and all supplies so are really low maintenance.

Please call if you can help A.S.A.P on 326 1461

IF YOU DONT HELP THEY HAVE TO STAY IN THE HUMANE SOCIETY..  and that not is not humane under these conditions!!

Chat again soon,
Helen
