Definitely getting windier here in Governor’s Harbour. Lots of whitecaps now and strong periodic gusts. No sign of rain but getting cloudier but sun still getting through. We already are hearing banging noises outside and we are trying to determine the source while we can get outside. No luck yet.

I am now in my office in Georgetown.  I have noticed that the lower clouds are moving north to south ... I would guess those are the outer bands of the circular motion of Gustav.  Its obviously getting close.  Only moderate wind ; nothing major yet.

Going to walk the dog now ... she may not be able to go out for a while once this gets started.

Stay tuned :-)

- Morning update
  • From: "Joyce Cantlay" <joymar at candw.ky>
  • Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 09:33:42 -0400

The sun is shining over Governor’s Harbour this morning with a good breeze and the harbour wit a good chop and whitecaps. The latest Radio Cayman update (you can listen to a live broadcast from their website) has Grand Cayman starting to get rain around mid-morning, tropical storm force winds around 7pm this evening and the worst of the winds (near-hurricane or hurricane force) in the early morning hours Saturday. We always hope the worst of any storm passes in daylight. It doesn’t seem to be the case with Gustav.

A friend just drove over from town and said there were lots of cars on the road but they were all parked! After Ivan everyone learned a hard lesson and now move their car to any high ground to be found anywhere- even on the road way roundabouts.

Predictions are for wave heights of 15-20ft and 13” plus of rain – up to 25” potential. Sounds like parts of Jamaica had lots of flooding problems and even lots roofs etc.

Ok, Later then.

  • Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 05:49:01 -0700 (PDT)

This is the latest information about the airport:

The Cayman Islands Airports Authority announces the following airport closures, based on the current forecast for Tropical Storm Gustav and the declaration of a Hurricane Warning for the Cayman Islands :

Owen Roberts International Airport:

It is anticipated that closure will occur at approximately 12:00 pm/noon on Friday, 29th August as hurricane conditions are expected to begin affecting Grand Cayman from around 2:00 pm on Friday through 4:00/5:00 am on Saturday.

Gerrard-Smith International Airport:

This Airport will be closed all day Friday, 29th August as Tropical Storm conditions are expected to begin affecting the Sister Islands from around 9:00 am on Friday.

NOTE: Reopening of both Airports will occur after physical inspection of airport facilities and runways following the passing of Gustav, and it has been ascertained that it is safe to commence flights into and out of the Cayman Islands .

Good morning everyone!

Well what a beautiful morning today,  a lovely breeze, blue skies with some clouds.  It is really lovely,  wish it would stay that way than having Gustav coming towards us.

Most of my furniture is now upstairs and the rest will be going up soon,  have to have the first cup of coffee before attempting it.  Will close the rest of the hurricane shutters late morning.

Was quite shocked this morning when I turned on the weather channel to see people in Cayman preparing,  a pleasant site normally they forget us down here and focus on other areas!  What a lovely site especially for our families that live abroad.  Had a call from my Mum and Dad in the UK.  They are watching the news closely and find SKY NEWS the best information.  So if anyone is reading this, that live across the pond, then watch that news station.

I will post again later and stay safe everyone.

Location: Crewe Road, near Owen Roberts Airport.

This morning Grand Cayman is waking up to partly cloudy skies, with some cumulus clouds drifting in the wind. The sun is being blocked by some cloudiness to the east. That will change as the day progresses as Gustav just leaving western Jamaica, will begin affecting us later this evening. Light breezes at my location with occasional gusts, enough to rattle a gutter on my house.

Gustav looks like he is becoming a bit more predictable, as the projected path still has the storm passing 30 miles to our NE.  Nice photo of the early morning sun rise by Micho.

Got work to do in the yard. Will post later.  Keep safe everyone.

Good morning,

It’s a beautiful morning (see picture below)  There is a very pleasant breeze and the bird are chirping!

We are definitely not feeling anything from Gustav, the rollercoaster, yet.

The satellite dish is down and anything of value is at my office which is a shelter building.  I almost feel like I have moved out of the house. Sunday will probably be spent putting my life back together.  When these things come (this is my second ; I had Dean last year), you feel like your life is on hold for a few days.  Can’t make any plans and need to prepare and then wait.  I was going to do my diving certification this week-end … Gustav put an end to that!

Cheers,

We've decided to go the whole hog and get ourselves prepared in good time in case Senor Gustav put his foot on the gas and made a mad rush for us!
Jarrett, I hear you, my POV is to just get it done and then we're ready for the rest of the season. Shutters are up, house is flooding-ready, stack of books is at the ready and I am planning to catch up on my reading during the hurricane!

Went outside for a bit just now - nice wind blowing, overcast, road outside our house is dry as a bone so it has not rained much last night.

Well I woke up just after 5am here and couldn't go back to sleep. Looks like Gustav is on his way! I know that hurricane season is the price that one pays for living in the Caribbean during the winter. At this point I'm wondering how bad can a winter be? It takes so much work to prepare for one of these storms, anyway off to finish the last minute tidy up around the the yard, pull the shutters closed and hope that this thing leaves us alone.
I"ll update as the storm moves closer.

Got up to check the NHC 5AM advisory (only 4AM here). Gustav’s path has moved back closer to Grand Cayman at the moment. Here at Governor’s Harbour I can hear the wind blowing but between shutters and the dark I can’t see much! It’s not raining at the moment and I don’t know if it during the night. We had just a few passing drops around 11PM. It can pour heavily in one area and not get a drop in another on the island. The winds have not strengthened overnight but the storm has certainly gotten much bigger. Last night the winds were only extending out 45 miles from the centre. NHC now reports they extend 140 miles. This is a pretty big storm that will be felt by us and the Sister Islands. It is estimated that we will be feeling TS force winds by 11AM, less intensity before then, but clearly things will be picking up from here. The storm is leaving the tip of Jamaica and will hit uninterrupted warm water but with only 220 miles to go before the centre reaches us hopeful it won’t intensify too much until it is past us.

- Gustav the 'Riddler'
  • From: William Mc Taggart <wmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 23:53:50 -0500
Location Crewe Road, near Owen Roberts Airport.

Well Tropical storm Fay was dubbed the "Joker". Micho dubbed Gustav the "rollercoaster" which is quite appropriate, but I would like to dub 'him' the "Riddler".  He just keeps us all guessing on what he will do next :-) . (nuh true?)
This morning Gustav was heading SW, stopped and made a right turn to the West, collided with Jamaica, and then kind of slipped of the side of the Blue Mountains  and is now heading west near the south coast of Jamaica, heading to Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman in particular.  This morning the folks at the NHC had Gustav passing to the south of Grand Cayman, then later in the day 30 miles to the NE, now the latest forecast has it at 26 miles to the NE. What's next??? I have a feeling we are in for a direct hit.
Keep safe Jamaica... Thanks to all the correspondents who keep us informed.

Cayman Islands are now on Hurricane warning.

Today private and government offices closed at around noon, creating traffic congestion on the main roads. Retail Shops were really busy providing necessities for the  hurricane event. Some stores (grocery) are likely to open in the morning for a short while.  Still have work to do around my yard.  Had others to assist with securing their homes.  Thankfully I have impact rated accordion shutters by Homeshield, (yes I sell them), that can be closed in a very short time.

We experienced rather short downpour 0.20" at about 10pm.  That cooled of the air by a couple degrees.

Current conditions:
Clear Skies with a few puffs of cumulus clouds.
Winds NE at 5-10 knots
Temperature 83°F
Humidity 80%
Barometer 1006.8 hPa/29.73in
Rainfall 0.22"

I wonder what surprises Gustav the "Riddler" will bring tomorrow morning?

May I suggest when posting reports we state our location. It would help as conditions can be quite different over a relatively short distance.

- The night before the storm
  • From: "Joyce Cantlay" <joymar at candw.ky>
  • Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 00:24:21 -0400

Well, everyone is long home now after finishing off their work today and getting their last minute supplies, parking cars in strategic locations and running last minute errands. Many if not all, businesses will be closed tomorrow as we are now officially in a Hurricane Warning.

I am in Governor’s Harbour, directly on Mitchell’s Creek and it is quite breezy tonight but nothing untoward. We have watched Gustav dance between us and our Sister Islands, head south, and return to the small gap between us once again. That is the preferred location going by the various expert predictions. Better for Grand Cayman and worse for Little Cayman and the Brac.

We will know more in the morning; as Gustav has demonstrated, this storm can change within a matter of hours. Intensification is our main concern. Most people will wait until morning to make their final decisions as to whether or not they will bunker down at home, move inland, go to a shelter etc. Other than that, everyone is well prepared as most people have been down this road many a time before. A category  2 or less will be welcome at this point since predictions had it at a Cat 4 at one point passing us. Anything less is a bonus.

Power permitting, will update as tomorrow progresses.

Well it's a matter of time now! It seems like it has taken for ever to traverse the length of Jamaica, I wonder how long it feels to the people in Jamaica.
I have a few things that I need to button up in the morning, these new shutters are amazing. I rather not have to use them at all, at least I don't have to balance plywood up the ladder.
I'll finish last minute things at first light in the morning then check the surf... I know what you're thinking, but there is always a window right before the weather starts to go bad. I'm not sure if this storm will have any waves in front of it! Ivan gave us a solid 6-7 foot swell a day before it kicked our asses! I let you know tomorrow afternoon maybe with a few pictures.
The waiting sucks, I take comfort in knowing that I'm not the only one feeling these pre hurricane jitters. Going for a cold beer now before the lights go out tomorrow night. Might go get a big plate of late night greasy food as well! Going to also stop and get some chocolates! Might be tuna sandwiches for a couple of days.
Over prepare!

We were delighted to have an extra day of mainly sunshine today.  We saw shutters going up all over the island and the boats at the Carib Sands dock have been  moved to moorings.  The sky has been unusually delightful with fantastic cloud formations and spectacular colors to the south and west at sunset today while huge billowing dark clouds sparked  lightning as they thundered in from the north and east.   We will be receiving pets at Noah's Ark, the animal storm shelter, tomorrow at noon and expect weather to deteriorate rapidly tomorrow evening.

Hi everyone,

Offices are closed and supermarkets are relatively full of people.  Some lineups at the gas stations ; glad I filled up the other day!

One thing I noticed on my drive to the office to bring my supplies is that there seems to have been lots of car accidents today ; I saw at least 3 cars on the side of the road with significant damage.  Probably due to people being stressed out with the storm.

Here is one of Cayman Airways 737-300’s taking off for Miami. The new Cayman airways livery (AKA paint job) looks great in my opinion!  They are evacuating lots of people today.  Maybe it was Chris McTaggart at the commands, one of the other correspondents!

Here is one of the “mosquito planes” that is used to control populations of Mosquitoes.   Its solidly tied down next to the street in a high area.  Not something you see every day.

Dear All

Well,  what can I say!  I was off island on a well deserved vacation in Florida and happened to look at the news!  That was on day 2 of my weeks holiday.  Needless to say that I flew back to the island yesterday to protect my property and look after my dog!

Went back to work today,  I work for Jacques Scott at the airport.  It seemed really eery! their was no mad rush at the airport.  This morning (at 5.15am ) there was a lot of  pax ready to board planes but it has been very calm and no panic at all.  Like i say it is quite eery to be so quiet.  There was availability on Cayman Airways flights today (unsure if they are sold out now) but try if you need to get off.

Just to let you all know that Jacques Scott stores have closed now so all the staff can go home and prepare,  thank you for that...  I thought I would let you all know incase you are looking for the staple hurricane supply of a case of beer.

Started hearing the drill going now around here,  I will pull my shutters upstairs tonight and downstairs tomorrow,  thank God for hurricane shutters.

Lets hope this mad Gustav is going to veer off somewhere else but if not be gentle on all of us here.

Get ready and I will post again later.

Look like we are in for lots of rain & wind!  Things are fairly calm on island right now and I expect lots of offices will close at lunchtime to let their employees go home to prepare. If you have not gotten supplies yet or filled up your gas tank ;  do so now!

However ... this Gustav "the rollercoaster" hurricane is so erratic, that i would not even be surprised to see it make a dramatic turn once again.  Maybe wishful thinking, but its anyones guess!

Good morning All,

I am very busy due to the changes and forecast that have happened early this morning, in addition need to make preparation and also fl the afternoon bank of Miami flights. Just posting again what I sent to my operations team as my personal observation.

Well folks quite a bit of an early morning surprise as Gustav has been moving very little during night and almost a drift south in the past couple of hours, but that westward movement is still expected  after a little of a west-southwest jog first. I am still hoping for the ridge to move further east so Gustav can get on the north-westerly trend early. The best hope is either for the NW trend at the latest when it crosses the west end of Jamaica or maintain that west-southwest trend longer than forecasted. I almost want to hope at this point that it does exactly what UKMET is now forecasting as Gustav is in a very dangerous location relative to the Cayman Islands. (see latest modules below). With all that appears I am still expecting the passage just east of Cayman, but closer than I expected yesterday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 70 mph with higher gusts and with such slow movement Gustav will be back at Hurricane Cat 1 by next  major official report. I am still expecting a borderline Cat 2 “minimum” crossing our area.

http://icons-pe.wunderground.com/data/images/at200807_model.gif

I will post further as I have time and certainly will at least drop a note after I come back from flying tonight.

Everyone have a great day.

Warm regards,

Chris

Good morning all,

just a quick situation report on the present conditions on Grand Cayman.
Its a fine sunny day, no wind, going to be another of those hot hot days. Its a big relief to see that Gustav is downgraded a bit, but everybody is very alert for this one!

My general impression is that people are very well prepared, have stocked up, have plans in place and are staying calm. Not much panic buying yesterday, tellers told me people cleaned them out the day before yesterday, but that they still had lots of stock. Drove by the airport last night, it was empty of people. Bars doing good business. Liquor stores expecting to take a massive hit today from hurricane party hearty types.
People going to work today as usual, although lots of offices are closed today.

All the best,
Sharon

Surprise, Surprise!!!
Gustav  has a mind of his own and defies the forecasters predictions. The position of Gustav is now on the southeast coast of Jamaica thanks to the high pressure ridge that has been drifting SE forcing the storm to take a course of least resistance. Gustav has intensified quickly overnight to a 70 MPH Tropical Storm and will soon be a  hurricane again. I recall several days ago an email I received from 'Max' grrr predicting this storm would go south before going west. Good call Max  :-)
This track now puts Gustav as a hurricane of 70/75 knots 85mph passing Grand Cayman  10 miles to the south at its closest point in
44.0 hours (Saturday, August 30 at 2:30AM EST).
The tides  are important as it relates to  tidal surge, and it looks like we will be on the low side of the curve, on a rising tide at its closest point.
Friday 28 August          High 5:39am & 8:32pm  Low  1:09am & 1:14pm
Saturday 29 August      High  6:55am & 8:46pm Low  1:37am & 1:57pm

Good call Micho on the "Rollercoaster"

Current Conditions.
Partly Cloudy with "bright sunshine"
Winds E at 5-10 knots
Temperature 85°F
Humidity 76%
Barometer 1008.2 hPa or 29.77 in
Rainfall  0.00"

Got work to do now.  Will keep you updated when able.  Jamaica....Keep safe!!!

Have a wonderful day.

Those are the 1st words (or sounds!) that came to mind when I looked at the latest projections this morning.  I don't know what the experts are dubbing this storm, but I am calling it "the rollercoaster" because of all of the changes in direction, speed and general orientation!  Talk about stressful and totally unpredictable. :-(

This morning, Gustav now forecasted to "skim" south of Jamaica and then right at Grand Cayman.  Previous forecasts were nothing like that.  Amazing what 8h or so can do.

Lots more people on the road this morning on my early drive to work and saw a Cayman Airways Boeing taking off at 6:30am.  During the regular schedule, the 1st flight out is usually around 7:15am.  The storm must be getting close!

My blog about life in Grand Cayman (and hurricanes ...)

  • From: "Christopher McTaggart" <chrismctaggart at caymanairways.net>
  • Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 01:35:07 -0500

Good evening Storm Carib – All,

Well it has been ages since I have posted on the site. As I mentioned when I last posted since I have been more involved management wise with Cayman Airways I have found little spare time to surf and post on the WWW. Being involved more in planning, management of aircraft schedules and crewing, in addition to actually flying  during the times of hurricane threats to the Island, I get little time to just browse.

I do get to see and talk regularly to folks that are regular posters and visitors to Storm Carib from around Cayman, so just today I promised someone I would drop by for a visit. As the modules started to project Cayman in the forecasted path early in the week and even more now I have been very busy with the planning and implementation of a shuttle service between the Island and South Florida both for the 4100 visitors and also local residents. I flew the later groupings of flights this evening and on my return late tonight decided to turn on the ‘puter and stop by for a visit to say hello, and of course check up on Gustav’s night progress.

I will copy my nightly report that I sent out to the company’s operation staff and flight crews and I will try to keep the postings going over the next few days. I do realize from years ago there are also a lot of people worldwide that have interests in Cayman and also family therefore use Storm Carib as a daily check up to see what’s going on in the Islands especially during the Hurricane Season. So here let me get my posting started:

The late evening update for TS Gustav now indicates movement to the West-Southwest near 8 mph.

We can expect a more westerly track during tomorrow morning as the ridge of high pressure now will  start to drift slightly South-South East which gives the satellite imagery of the northern associated upper level clouds the appearance of shear or as though it is flattening the northern edges. Eventually the ridge will start a more South Easterly drift in the latter hours of tomorrow evening which will then give Gustav a slight West-North westerly track. Gustav center should skirt the northern coast of Jamaica as it moves westerly towards the Cayman Area. I gear towards the UKMET module as being the most probable source of track forecasting as this one tracked both IVAN and DEAN almost identical to my home module. I expect UKMET to show tomorrows track passing even closer to Cayman, my guess 40-50 miles east. As you can see by the track listing below, all modules are starting to show a pattern closer to the Cayman area.

Intensification will be more prominent after sunrise tomorrow and if Gustav will increase or build forward movement even more, then this will minimize the Category ranking as it passes the Cayman Area. I expect a Cat 1 to borderline Cat  2 as it passes our area, but unfortunately expect a Cat 4 for the Galveston/Houston coast…possibly San Antonio..

Data tomorrow will give an even better forecast now that Gustav moves over open water tonight.

Well tonight’s flying was beautiful, almost clear skies, beautifully smooth, but the distant east lightning as we crossed Cuba reminded me Gustav was out there and trucking westward. One very noticeable difference, Calm Winds, no wind readout on the aircrafts computer from about 10,000 feet all the way up to as high as 30,000 feet. Cruising at 37,000 feet had a wind of Northerly and mostly less than 10 knots. Tomorrow is another busy day at the airport and office, but I again will fly the evening groups of flight and I will do my best to drop by for another post tomorrow night.

Until then, take care and a big hello to all the visitors and posters on Storm Carib, to Gert and the gang too, hope all is well with everyone.

Warm regards,

Chris

Good evening all,
A few moments ago I checked the visible satellite and the Cuban Radar and observed that it appears that Gustav is now moving to the WSW towards Jamaica. The National Hurricane Center 11pm update confirmed my observation. This shift in direction now has the forecast track of Gustav skirting the north coast of Jamaica, and then a 'bee line' for the Brac and Little Cayman.  Although Gustav is a 40knot tropical storm, it is expected to intensify to a hurricane just north of Grand Cayman.  Looks like a tropical storm now for the Brac and Little Cayman, if the forecast holds, it changes at every update.

We have been on Hurricane watch since Tuesday 6pm, I expect that will be changed to a TS or hurricane warning early Thursday morning.

If I can add my unscientific thoughts, Gustav will maintain a more westerly course thanks to the high pressure ridge to its north and pass between Grand Cayman and the sister islands, passing closer to GCM than the 60 miles now indicated by this site's calculator.   Jamaica, looks like you are in for some big time rain.

Cayman Airways has put on extra flights for persons wishing to leave the islands ahead of the storm.

Locally, I can feel the winds of change.
Current Conditions:
Clear Skies
Temperature 85°F
Winds NE at 5-10 knots
Humidity 75%
Barometer 1009.9hPa 29.82 in
Rainfall: Trace .02" :)

Watching Gustav very closely.  Have a pleasant night

William

- waiting

I hate the waiting. As I said yesterday I headed to the store to get the last minute supplies. All the major stores (that must do well in times like this) had full parking lots.

In a move that I don't think I've ever seen before here in Grand Cayman, some of the gas stations on the island lowered prices. Signs say $4.98/ gallon, that's down from the $5.20/ gallon that I paid earlier in the week. Those are in CI dollars.Conversion $5 Cayman dollars equals $6.25 U.S dollars. It's a good thing that its a small island!
I
hope the low pressure that's forecast to move the high pressure and let Gustav turn north gets here in a hurry. I don't want the power to go out!

My hurricane tip for the day, get up on a ladder and take down the TV antenna. Note the direction that it was pointing, after the storm passes and you still have a roof, get back up on the ladder, get the antenna back in place. You never know there might be a signal and if you've lost your antenna in the storm who know when's the cable company will be able to replace it......just a thought

Be prepared for the worst, expect the worst and when it doesn't happen it was allot of work but well worth it to know you had your act together!

Be safe.

Hi to all
Today, Wednesday, people are getting ready but still waiting to see how
close to Grand Cayman this will come. Bright and sunny this morning. I think
the Cayman Islands are going to be ready for what ever it brings. Hopefully
by the weekend we will have good news to give you all.
Stay tune!

Good morning everyone,

The people of the Cayman Islands are hard at work preparing for the storm.  Last night while walking my dog all I could hear were saws cutting panels to make shutters!  I could also see people in the dark picking stuff up and getting their homes ready.  On the drive to work this morning I could see that many homes have their shutters up and are ready.

Yesterday afternoon I went to fill up gas and waited under 10 minutes.  By the time I left, the wait was at least double that. The guy before me had a large SUV and it cost him 125$CI (152$US) to fill up ... ouch!

A mix of sun & dark clouds this morning in Grand Cayman ... nothing great!

Just want to report that the first outer band of Gustav passed over Cayman Brac at 11 pm EST with roaring thunder, lots of lightning, some wind  and a good, healthy rain.
As usual, the weather station at the airport is not reporting so can't give an estimate of wind speed tonight.   Gene and I are planning to run the animal storm shelter, Noah's Ark,
up on the bluff Thursday afternoon.  We were hoping for a nice sunny day tomorrow to put up the shutters and do a little fishing but this introductory rain squall indicates we
may be putting shutters up in the rain.

Now I know that I probably stare to long at all the weather sites that there are these days but this one looks like it's going to close. With the  hurricane winds stretching 25 miles out and it crossing us on Friday afternoon about 70 miles to the north.... that's 45 miles to play with and 3 days to go! I also know that close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. The lines in the warehouse stores were apparent this morning with shopping baskets full of water and the usual items.
Tomorrow will bring a better of an idea where this thing is going. In the mean time...... well if you don't know by now you better start asking some one.

To bad diesel is so expensive. I need to get the boat and the generator of the same kind of fuel so that and the end of hurricane season I can fill the fishing boat up and go look some wahoos!

Winter soon come.

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone in Cayman is keeping an eye on this one. I also hope that people are at a minimum looking at their supplies and making plans to visit the grocery stores soon! Time to find those dusty shutters for those who have not put them up yet. This storm keeps changing path and is getting bigger/stronger all the time :(

The Cayman correspondents are in full alert on this site so stay tuned!  Have not seen so many posts here in such a short time.

Good morning everyone,

Gustav  was a tropical storm when I went to bed last night, I woke up this morning to find a hurricane with 90mph winds and a forecast track further west and south than originally had been forecast.  Cayman Brac and Little Cayman....prepare, looks like Gustav will pass close to you on Thursday night/Friday morning.  Grand Cayman, begin preparations now, don't wait until last minute. We are in the "cone". According to the N.H.C. intensity forecast at 7am EST, Gustav is expected to be a major hurricane in the Western Caribbean in a few days.

On the local weather, earlier it was sunshine, dogs barking and roosters crowing,  it is now overcast, roosters still crowing and looks like we may be in for an early morning rain shower.

Current Conditions
Partly Cloudy with possibility of showers
Temperature 81°F
Winds E to ESE at 5 knots
Humidity 83%
Barometer 1012.2 hPa  29.89 in
Rainfall Month 2.23"

Have a great day.

Well  I was going to start bashing the local government web site about the lack of warnings concerning Gustav. I'm sure when they get out of bed they'll up date it.

I personally am headed to the store right now. I think Cayman Brac and Little Cayman might feel the effects of this storm more than we will. At the moment the wind field is very near the center of circulation, lets hope it stays there!. I have shutters this season on both my house and my moms place so no plywood! That time can be spent better preparing the outside of the houses.

I don't like the look of this one.  A few computer models are tracking it North of Grand Cayman, but some others put it directly in our path.  Even if it were to go South of GC, we could be in for some serious surf from the north east quadrant of this storm.

Keep your eyes peeled and fingers crossed.

Hi everyone,

Fabulous day in Grand Cayman today! Hot but not too humid. Some scattered showers, but none in my area! :-)
Keep an eye out for Invest 94.  Every time I look at the satellite pictures, it seems to be getting bigger, looking more like a hurricane and steering in our general direction!  I hope everyone has their hurricane kits ready just in case.

Hope you all had a great week-end.

It looks like Fay will not affect Grand Cayman at all.  :-) We had no rain all day (at least not in the area where I live) and about 30 seconds of rain this evening!

Hi everyone,

Long time no posts from us here in Cayman!

The Cayman Islands government has issued a tropical storm watch.  I am looking at the satellite tracking and it looks like that Fay may "brush" us but probably not all that much. The sister islands (Cayman Brac & Little Cayman) will probably see more rain/wind than in Grand Cayman. In any case, I am expecting to spend Sunday at home watching movies!

Very hot & humid today. Nice & sunny also tough.  Great day to go to the beach and cool off or just sit back and eat ice cream.  Ill be doing the second option after lunch :-)

Cheers

  • From: Sharon Marcussen <-------- at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 05:20:56 -0700 (PDT)

Things seem to be back to normal today.

The flooding caused by rain has pretty much disappeared. The weather is calm, still, sunny blue sky - its monday morning and everybody is gearing up for another week at work.

I live a few miles outside George Town in Prospect, and experienced a little thunder and a few lightning bolts on friday afternoon/evening. Apparently one destroyed some equipment at Radio Cayman. None on saturday and sunday in our area.

Saturday morning was fine and sunny. Went snorkeling at SMB, the sea was calm at low tide around noon. Came out to find the weather had suddenly turned ominously grey, with lashings of very heavy rain, and the storm continued from then until sunday night.

I enjoyed the lovely cool weather though. We received huge amounts of rain friday night to sunday evening. Each rainy period was followed by lulls followed by lashings of wind-driven rain. The raindrops actually hurt, if one was out in the rain, and it sometimes sounded as if it was hail rather than rain! The wind pushed water into a number of homes, we had to place old towels against patio doors and mop up a little water seeping up in certain areas of our home. Also found some geckos had managed to squeeze in somehow.

There was no flying debris, although my plastic patio table seems to have flown several feet friday night. Lots of fallen light debris around palm trees. The flooding and wind caused a few small trees to fall over. Nothing major, although I saw several people out making small repairs to their roofs during the lulls. Home electricity fixtures probably also got flooded in some homes.

No electricity outages in our area, and we had internet (C&W) and TV (most channels, Westtel) all through the storm.

Lots of rainwater flooding over the weekend. I had the pleasure of having a temporary moat around my home, complete with  waterbirds and swimming USO (unidentified swimming objects, probably iguanas or snakes) - my garden had been almost entirely flooded. Seems the road drains could not keep up, though not so much that SUVs could not get through easily. The garden seems 90% back to normal today (monday) morning.

Saw a lot of low-slung passenger cars that may have experienced flooding through being parked in areas that got flooded as it rained. Saw just a few out during the rain, and just one stalled in flood waters.

Dramatic waves at Spotts! The sea did not seem to wash up any sand or cause damage in South Sound area, no apparent damage at Windsor Garden either! Although it did claim one small boat that got flooded at the boat ramp at South Sound. Not sure if the baby mangroves planted out near Cayman Crossing have survived the wave action.

In all, a good storm drill to get us all ready for hurricane season!

Well the rain has stopped. It's been raining all day! Internet was out all day but that shouldn't surprise any one. The one day that I would of really like to have weather at my finger tips and WestTel drops the ball. What happens when there is a real problem....... typical.!

Stars are out looks like things should be clearing out tonight, fingers crossed for Cancun/Cozumel..... guess hurricane season is really here.

Title: TS Dolly

Not surprising really considering the weather conditions Cayman has been experiencing over the last day or so - lets face it, how much longer could 94L have lasted as an invest!!  It had to either get pulled apart or form into either a TD or TS.

Well, it looks set on a path heading towards the gulf of Mexico http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at4.shtml?5day#contents.  I don't really want to comment on this storm and its current path and just hope that it weakens rather than strengthen.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this TS fizzels out.

Keep safe all.

When you are 8 months pregnant you tend to be subjected to plenty of sleep interruptions throughout the night. I woke around 2am, 4am, 5am and 6am to find it raining pretty hard each time, and it still continues.

From what I can see outside there is plenty of flooding and where we live isn't genrally very prone, but there are plenty of areas on the island that are. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Let's hope 94L remains just that and causes no harm to anyone in its path. Take care all.

Title: 94L

Well 94L is almost upon us in Cayman, and to prove such there was a fair amount of wind and rain just "dumped" on us (in George Town at least (Walkers Road area))!

It lasted for about 20 mins but as I previously thought earlier in the week, it looks like there may be quite a bit more of the same weather to follow over the next few hours if not through until tomorrow.

I suspect, once again in my personal opinion, this system will develop into a TD, but it probably would have passed us by then.  Well see.  Positively, Cayman is yet again being blessed with much needed rain - hopefully not too much in certain areas that may cause inconvenient flooding.

Tara

Signing off for now, but will be keeping an eye on 94L and report if there is much change in the weather conditions around my area.  Don't much feel like venturing out considering my current condition!!  Take care all!

Last night I was also woken up by massive thunder in Savannah!  Thank goodness my husky dog sleeps like a baby during these storms (sorry Helen) ;-)
Attached to this email are a few pictures I took with my Blackberry during the drive home on Wednesday.

The 1st one is the exit to our parking lot ; completely flooded. The second one is Elgin ave.  The 3rd is the cricket field completely flooded.

Looks like Invest 94, the storm around Aruba right now will pass south of Cayman, which is great news.

Enjoy the week-end everyone.

Good Morning everyone

Wasn't expecting to be woken up at 1.59am with horrendous thunder and lightning. Not a good thing when you have to get up at 4.15am to go to work.  ha ha!  It is really bad, the rain is very heavy and the wind seems to be picking up. Lightening seems to light up the whole house and the house rattles with the thunder.  Thank goodness all the flooding ran away during the day yesterday as now we have another river outside in the road!
Wonder if West Bay is having this!  If your up and online let me know!!
My dog is not happy,  barking frantically and panting now as he has exhausted himself over the  past 15 minutes.  I feel so sorry for them as they get so upset in this weather.  Feel even worse for any animal left outside in this.  Ok I'm hoping this will calm down so maybe I can get back to bed for an hour or so before going to the airport,  not sure about the planes taking off on time though if this keeps up!

Well here in George Town there is plenty of rain and thunder and lightening! It seems we may have much of the same for a couple of days to come. I am keeping my eye on 94L much like everyone else no doubt. However, in my opinion if this does develop and cross our path in Cayman, it will likely just produce some high surf, rain and minimal gusty winds. Please note this is just my personal opinion! Either way considering the tropics seem to have awakened, now is a good a time as any to get your skates on and stock up/get prepared etc, if you haven't already that is!

5 weeks left till I give birth - and I can only hope and pray we are "safe" again for another year!!

Take care all.

Well guys after looking at sat images I can see that 94L has a closed circulation wind shear has dropped off , I do believe we now have Cristobal has formed the path in which is clear tome is just south of Jamaica then curving  into Mexico I HOPE I AM WRONG , my fellow islanders I strongly recommend that preps should be in place already if not please get stated as these storms as they enter the Caribbean they develop fast and are very unpredictable , I am forecasting a strong cat 3 border cat 4 when it reaches 65 -70 deg Long ,

So long for now I will check back later, my fellow islanders in the east be safe hope you all just get rain from this.

extremely hot today. I took my lunch break and headed over to Governor's
Beach for a little lie down in the sun as I usually do, but today was
unbearably hot. I lasted about 30mins, my coke got hot, and I had to head
back to the office to the pleasure of AC.

Not a lot of rain yet but as I have been cycling to work over the past
couple of weeks there seems to be a strip of showers that last for a few
minutes over the Lone Star/Strand area in the mornings. They come back after
lunch and leave the evenings 'fairly' cool. But who am I trying to kid.

Stand up paddle-boarding this evening was beautiful even thought there was
not much of a sunset. As the sun went down the sky was lit with an amazing
glow from the approaching full moon rising. Loved it.

So some swell has been visiting over the past week in the south, although
there hasn't been much activity on Seven Mile Beach. Not much wind, I'd say
about 10 - 15 knots at times. Nothing very exciting to report except for the
approaching TD off the Cape Verde islands.

Keep your eyes on that bugger.

Regards,

Charles

Hi everyone,

Not much happening on the weather front in Cayman!

It has been very hot and also very humid in recent days.  Compared to last year, I have been surprised by the lack of rainfall. It seems to only rain for 3-5 minutes every few days or so.

Crab season here is in full swing!  There is a type of crab here in Cayman that lives inland and that comes out when its dark.  You have to be careful where you step and also have to avoid them when driving.  Many locals eat these crabs.  It’s quite entertaining to see cars driving around slowly, then all of a sudden a child jumps out, grabs the crab and then back into the car!

Here is Niko, a neighborhood dog having a duel with this crab!

Well the rain seems to have stopped for now. It looks like there are still some good patches of bad weather to the south. But for now the sun is out. Wind might just be strong enough to go for a windsurf 10-15knts looks like east south east.

Dear All

Well I never thought we would have 2 named storms before the season even started!  However we now have TS Arthur.  Presently in Belize and heading towards Mexico.
We are very glad to receive all this rain, although we could do with some more,  I'm sure the tourist don't agree but the grass looks better green rather than brown.  And that hot weather is so much cooler.
Everyone get prepared this year,  an early start so lets not leave things to the last minute.  Priced Right has the 3 packs of bleach at only $8.89 so buy it while its there!  I just have!!  When a storm is heading towards us, the shelves are empty within seconds, so get it when you see it. Then you won't have to worry about the shopping and can concentrate on getting your house packed up and prepared for a storm if and when its heading our way.

Chat again soon,
Helen

Hi everyone,

The Cayman correspondents are all back it seems!  Some much needed rain in the last day or so.  Everything was so dry that there had even been a bush fire in my area  a little while ago.  My wife’s tomato plants all died! L There was a great Hurricane supplement in the paper this week ; I hope everyone read it.  It reminded me that I need to refill my supplies as many times this winter I forgot my lunch (prepared by my lovely wife) and grabbed cans of Vienna sausages & peanuts in the stash I have in my office.

We made some shutters for our place this year.

Here is the before:

IMG_5639-1.jpg

During :  Making holes in the concrete for the Barrel bolts.

\IMG_5642-1.jpg

Tadah!  The finished product.  Nice painted (2 coats) plywood with 4X4 inch barrel bolts.  Should do just fine.  Hopefully we won’t need them.  In any case, I have put about ½ of them up already as they keep the house & garage much cooler.

While I was laboring away, my beloved Husky, was … well … definitely not helping me!  She was taking a nap in the driveway and looking directly at me the whole time.  When I was done, she stayed there, virtually glued to the asphalt.  A little while later, she slowly got up and came inside for some a/c.

Cheers,

A much welcomed rain has been upon us throughout the day....I can finally take a night off from hand watering plants and trees.....at least the drought has not only killed what little grass i had but the weeds have suffered a hit too!!!!

Good luck this Season everyone. Be prepared, be smart, don't take stupid chances...we all have been thru this before and we can emerge victorious this season as well....I say, let it rain down!

Hey All

This is my first post since last hurricane season. So hello to to all previous fellow correspondents and welcome to those of you who are new. As always I will try to keep in touch as often as possible.

Well we have been looking for some rain for a long time now and yesterday we got just that! Today seems to have provided even more rain - I believe its island wide. Hurricane Season 2008 is almost upon us, so keep your eyes and ears open for tropical development which may affect Cayman in the months to come.

TS Alma in the eastern Pacific made an early formation this morning which is already shedding lots of rain and threatens to dump much more over Central America.

I say the following each year on this post - get prepared now if you aren't already!

Fingers crossed we have a quiet year.

Tara

Looks like there is some rain the near future. Most of the weather models that I can read or struggle to read indicates that mother nature really has no regard for our dates and structured hurricane "season". There just might be a tropical feature this weekend to keep an eye on. I don't thing that we'll have to prepare full on, but it is a reminder that every one needs to get he act together now. Don't wait till the last minute

Well I just hope that my shutters get put on sooner rather than later. I will not do the balancing act up the ladder with the plywood this year.

Maybe some surf this weekend..... not heard of any good cases of sea itch yet. Maybe this weekend.

A fantastic day here in Grand Cayman.  Lots of sunshine, HOT with soft fresh breezes out of the SE. A great day for the beach.
No significant rainfall; 0.10" on Monday; just enough to keep the dust down for the day and to make a mess of the cars.

Only one week to go for the start of the hurricane season.  I have been noticing the increased activity in the SW Caribbean near Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua and into the Pacific and was hoping some of the clouds would find their way over this way and give us some much needed rain... but no luck!
May is usually a wet month for us, the average being about 6", but so far I have recorded only 0.13".  I guess it will come all at one time, when it does rain.

I have recorded high temperatures of 88°F or above every day for May, with the last 4 days topping out at 91°F... yes summer is here with a vengeance. I am thankful we do not have the 80% humidity yet, that will come with the rains and of course with the first rains come the flying termites.

Current Conditions:
Sunny, Hot and Dry
Temperature 89°F at 11am
Heat Index 98°F
Humidity 63%
Winds SE at 5-10 knots
Barometric Pressure 1014 hPa or 29.94"

Time to hit the beach!!

Enjoy the weekend.

It is just 11am and already the thermometer is showing 88° on my weather station. High temperature for the month is 92° on May 14th. The haze we have had for the past two weeks is now gone. Maybe the clouds will have a chance to build so we can get some rain.  It is dry and dusty. Been having to water the dirt to keep the dust down.  We have not had any significant rainfall since April 2 when we had just over 0.5".

Start of Hurricane season is just 2 weeks away.  We have a government sponsored hurricane preparedness week coming up  June 7-14  spanning over 2 weekends one of them a holiday weekend.  Cayman....be prepared, do not wait until there is a hurricane threat, it is too late then.

Speaking of holidays, Monday is Discovery Day here in the Cayman Islands.

Current conditions:
Partly cloudy
Temp: 88° F
Winds SE 5-10 knots
Rainfall  0"
Humidity 68%

Have a great weekend.

- Brilliant weather in Cayman
  • From: "Micho Schumann" <michosch at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 5 May 2008 23:56:42 -0500

Hi everyone,

The weather has been stellar in the Cayman Islands over the last few weeks!  Very little rain and lots of sun. It has been getting very hot however; I expect my next utility bill to be substantially higher than last month’s!  For the last week, we had a guest over, so with the great weather, we headed off to the turtle farm & all of the available activities there.  Here is a lovely brown shark in the “Predator reef” and a very large green sea turtle in one of the numerous tanks.

IMG_5499.jpg

IMG_5521.jpg

We also went for a snorkel & stingray city tour.  As you can see the stingrays were plentiful and very playful!  The color of the ocean was to die for!  Needless to say our guest was quite sad to fly back home on Monday morning.

 IMG_5452.jpg

IMG_5468.jpg

On the hurricane front, we can see some shutters being put up. I heard some murmurs about hurricane supplies at the office today ; the season is obviously (and unfortunately) almost upon us. We shall be reviewing out list this weekend and taking a look at our shutters and other gear to see if anything needs to be done. Better be safe than sorry, but especially better to be ready and beat the crowds at  the groceries & hardware stores if a storm is on its way.  It reminds me of  Canada ; people wait for the first snow storm to have their winter tires installed.  As soon as the first one looms, everyone rushes to the garage to have them installed, only to find long waits when it could have easily been done a few weeks earlier.  I guess some things are the same, wherever you live!

Cheers,

Micho
