We have been having a weather trough here and in our valley it has been raining for the last 24 hours. The temperature has been around 70 degrees it has been for here pretty cold. We also yesterday from early in the morning until about 8.30 a.m. had very bad thunder and lightning, which should not happen at this time of year! We hope that the weather improves and we get a sunny weekend. |

Well, what was all the weather about?? We checked on the satellite this morning - just cloud, so did not think anything of it, however, the heavens opened for at least 5 hours solid; at certain times it was not possible to see the lawn in front of the house?? How very, very weird. There has been flooding here but to what extent I know not. Just hope everyone stayed safe. We are very surprised that there truly was no warning.

I had a really interesting day yesterday! I decided to go to Roseau despite the weather warnings as the weather looked pretty good! I made the right decision! It rained heavily for about an hour in Roseau and then it started to lighten up which was brilliant as I had a lot of shopping to do!! I got home around 3.00 p.m. and then the heavens started to open and down came the rain! Then we had the thunder and lightning so turned the electricity off sat with our oil lamps and played scrabble. The really bad weather lasted for about 4 hours. This morning is very dark and it is raining slightly and we can hear the rumblings of thunder over the hill. We have not heard any bad news of flooding and hope that everyone is OK here in Dominica and elsewhere.

Here in Dominica we are having a very wet day, no thunder or lightning just, heavy showers of rain. Our dogs are busy chewing bones on our deck enjoying the chill out time. Jaco Ladd is watching Rugby from the UK and me well just hanging out. A day for relaxing.

We have woken up to blue skies here in the valley and the sun has taken her hat off so hopefully the worst of the weather is over. We had a great deal of rain, thunder and lightning yesterday for about 2 hours and we were very glad to see that it has gone. Today is community service day in Dominica so hopefully the weather will stay dry and sunny so lot's can be accomplished.

Thankfully, the inclement weather which paid an early 'Independence visit' to the Nature Island has left just as quickly... Some showers of blessing are forecast into tomorrow, however we are still expecting the fireworks displays to go off as anticipated later tonight. Hopefully, we may get a clear enough view although its still cloudy at the moment. A Happy 38th Independence to everyone...tomorrow the celebrations continue as National Day of Community service is observed.

The weather here started getting dark at 3.30 p.m. At 4.30 p.m. we stsrted having very heavy rain thunder and lightning. We are sitting with oil lamps alight. It looks like this system is right over us. It is our Independence day. I hope everyone stays safe. I think though we could have flooding and landslides.

Thus far thankfully the trough system affecting most of the Lesser Antilles islands has not been too much of a Nuisance here in the Nature Island of the Caribbean, Dominica. To God be the Glory, since the weather was most co-operative for the majority of our Major Independence/ Creole attractions/ Celebrations like Creole in the Park, and of course the World Creole Music Festival; 3 sensational Nights of pulsating rhythms comprising scores of International as well as phenomenal local artistes. Truly Fabulous.
Indeed, we have been so Very Blessed with fair weather in this year's major celebrations for which we are very grateful. This year Sweet Dominica thankfully and proudly celebrates 38yrs of Independence- today, November 3rd. Bright sunshine earlier today shone upon a stronger more resilient Nation under God, and provided the perfect window of opportunity for the National Independence Parades at the Windsor park stadium viewed by thousands of Dominicans. Although, this system will continue to produce cloudiness, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the island- it has been occasional in nature & made for generally very cool, and relaxing atmospheric conditions. Our thoughts and prayers to those being affected badly in the other Lesser Antilles islands.
A very Happy and Joyous Independence 2016 Once again to one and All! Vive La Dominique!!! & God Bless Dominica! |

We have had a really bad thunder, lightening and rain. Really heavy. I was driving and I could hardly see the road in front of me. Really heavy and scary too. It looks like we could be in for more! This actually took us by surprise. Stay safe everyone.

Looking at the weather sites it looks like we have another tropical depression right on our doorstep. At the moment here in the valley we are experiencing heavy showers very little light it is dark. I don't think we expected this today at all. It looks like this system could be with us for the next 24 hours. We are keeping our eyes on Mathew and hope that he does not do too much damage although it looks like Mathew is strengthening. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Mathew's path.

Mathew is closely approaching Jamaica at category 5 gone to 4 . We have just seen the post by a Jamaican StormCarib link and it seems no one is taking precautions!! Conversely, the UK Guardian news output reports panic buying throughout the island. On our domestic front here in the valley, still no power! Our electricity went on Wednesday night at 5.55 p.m. Above us are two coconut trees that have fallen on the FLOW line bringing the cable down into the road. We have been told that we will get our current back hopefully on Monday. For those in Jamaica, do take Mathew seriously go out buy provisions and please be safe. Mathew was only a fledgling here and yet it has caused us damage. .

Greetings & Blessings Everyone!
Oh Give Thanks to the Lord for He is Good- for His Mercy Endures Forever!!! Fortunately & Providentially the rains of Tropical Storm matthew were nothing of the likes of 'evil' Erika of last year. Thank You Jesus! All is pretty much almost fully back to normal in my area for which I'm So Grateful, as well most other Dominicans in the North (North east) of the island along with me ... All thanks & Glory be to God! Nonetheless, It was a challenging 24hrs weather-wise; with Tropical Storm Matthew affecting us, however, I give God thanks & Praise for His Tender Mercies, & for having spared us the worst with no fatalities or storm related injuries to report. Thoughts & prayers go out to our Brothers & Sisters who were affected the worst in Saint Vincent, Martinique, Saint Lucia & to a lesser extent in Barbados & Grenada.
Also, amazingly -thanks be to GOD -we never lost utilities- only a brief interruption with the power. Our power company- Domlec must be commended when its deserving for such outstanding service- we are indeed grateful. To those who have been without power due to the passage of the storm like Lisette, be assured that the crews are out and your area should be electrified soon according to the press release on their website posted today.As a nation ('38yrs young'- very soon in November) We have been able to show greater resilience this season-To God be the Glory in Jesus' Name!!!
N.B. Forecast models are indicating that this Hurricane could affect areas such as the ABC isles, Northern Colombia/ Venezuela, Haiti and others- so please keep alert.

Dominica got a punch on her nose. We had a extremely rough night here in the valley it poured with rain and we had a lot of gusty wind. There are a lot of power lines down including ours but very luckily the roads are open between us and Sultan; we were a bit worried that the landslide above us had fallen again which would mean we were trapped in! Not good at all.There is not a discernible radio signal in our area, but have heard that quite a lot of trees have fallen and it will be a while for everyone to have electricity including us. There was no thunder or lightning which we found a bit unusual; glad though as I am not at all fond of lightning. Hopefully there has not been too much damage to the infra structure of the island.

The intensification of Tropical storm Matthew has been horribly impressive- in attaining Tropical Storm status from being a strong Tropical Wave. Indeed, this storm's rapid genes is a precedent that speaks volumes, and is of course testament to the fact of the pre-existing tropical storm conditions which have been affecting some of the islands from the very early hours of this morning.
Matthew has already and is still making its impact & presence felt here in Dominica, and of course in the neighbouring islands.The one two punch is being delivered by Matthew with gusty winds and incessant rains coupled by a high storm surge in most coastal areas...not a good combination going into the night time. I hope and pray that the effects from Matthew will result in no loss of life at present, and along its future path. Those likely to be in the future path of this system- Please beware and heed accordingly. This is not a system to be trifled with at any cost. Preparedness is key!

All government businesses closed at 1.0 p.m. I guess others too. We have been experiencing heavy rain showers and very gusty winds. Just now a huge gust 4.45 p.m. bought the top of a tree down. It is getting dark and this weather looks like going on for quite a while. We are cocooned in our valley so have not heard any news of any effects of Mathew in other parts of the island. We hope nothing drastic has happened anywhere at all. Our dogs have been in most of the day and are enjoying being spoiled. We wish our fellow islanders good luck and safety.

We are currently experiencing a lot of wind coming in heavy gusts. We have plenty of bamboo down and the top of a tree on the lawn. Looking at the satellite photographs, Dominica is more in the path of Mathew although at the moment it looks like Martinique will bare more of the brunt. This system could be with us for quite a few more hours. The good thing so far is that we still have power and internet long may it last. We hope all the islands do not have too much damage and everyone stays safe.

- More Intense bands...

After yet another brief lull ...Conditions are deteriorating once more in the North East of the island as the next band -which is also visible on radar comes through. By far this is the most intense of the bands that we have endured for the day...much more stormy. Hopefully it should not get more intense than this... Though previous showers were moderate to heavy they have not usually been prolonged and torrential, however, this latest band of convection seems to have brought that un-welcomed torrential aspect along with it.
Again it is very apparent now that the 'centre' has re-positioned somewhat a little closer to us in Dominica -based on radar imagery- (We'll see in the next update what the official NHC center 'fix' actually is). It has been Unrelenting- almost From the wee early hours of this morning we have been getting a bit of a whipping up here in the North of the island with squally tropical storm conditions as the system consistently tries to better wrap and align its center of circulation/convection. And the 'licking' continues- as We are after-all pretty much basically in the North East Quadrant of the Storm.
Nevertheless, so far -so good though... I'm praying & Hoping that no significant damage occurs in any of the islands for that matter. However, from the looks of the radar -Martinique definitely looks like the center will impact them significantly and then the south of our island most likely. Of course, Irrespective of issuance or naming by the NHC -Tropical storm conditions are already occurring in the island chain.

We battened down the hatches so to speak before going to bed last night. We just had some rain in the night but nothing really to speak about. This morning the wind is picking up a bit and we have had some showers, it is a very funny feeling just waiting. I hope none of the islands get too damaged and that here in Dominica we do not have too much rain. The schools are all officially closed today. It looks like a day for a cook up, bake some bread and have a soup on the go for lunch. Wishing that everyone stays safe. |

97L- 'Pre- Matthew' is quite an intriguing tropical system indeed, it appears that its true center as seen on radar (Barbados and Martinique) -seems to be heading slightly south of due West- near or over Barbados at this point with large and heavy areas of convection being spread more to the East and North East of its center. However, it is steadily organizing & at this point for all intents and purposes- this ought to be a named system. I hope that everyone keeps safe across the chain of islands... This system will be with us for some time yet. Fortunately schools etc. are closed across most of the islands being affected.

So far occasional squally weather has been affecting the island from Midnight as predicted by Met officials, and then around 2a.m. the first significant band of the system came through producing sustained winds to near tropical storm force with much more powerful wind gusts in white-out conditions. 'Pre- Matthew' is definitely not a system to be taken lightly by any means and I don't think the most aggressive of intensity predictions by weather models may be really too exaggerated at this point. Those in the future path of this system- Beware... Hopefully, rapid intensification will not occur while the center nears and or crosses the Lesser Antilles islands -perhaps somewhere near St. Lucia/ Barbados. Expecting some additional bands shortly, however, so far all our utilities are holding well here on the North East coast of the Nature Island of the Caribbean, Dominica. Keep safe everyone...

97L Who are you what are you, when should we name you Mathew? This weather system is reminiscent to us of TS Erika. We are therefore taking every precaution. Am I going over the top with this? You bet I am! We suggest every single person in Dominica be prepared for the worst, this means that you will be safe. The system is very large and could last a long time and we could/will have a lot of rain. Please anyone living in a area that is prone to flooding go and stay with a friend. Anyone whose land could slide please go and stay with a friend. Our lives are more important than buildings.
Any "Don't be so silly Lisette" messages will be acknowledged pre landfall....

We had some thunder and lightning earlier today. It is very overcast and quite chilly. We could be having some extra funny kinda weather today as there is a bit of cloud around. We re keeping our eyes on 97L,'; it is quite likely that we could get some bad weather from this system, hopefully it will pass below us. It looks like it could be with us Tuesday night going into Wednesday morning. It would be wise to keep watching and do some stocking up.

We are having a beautiful day here in Dominica. In the river swimming the dogs. Sweet! It looks very possible that we here in Dominica will get weather from invest 92 L. This system seems to be moving fast, so the earliest it could be here in the Caribbean is Tuesday into Wednesday. We are still in the middle of hurricane season. Do not take your guard down. Here is to the lady in St. Croix who is forever wanting a hurricane. Madam I sincerely hope you never ever experience one! Everyone enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Karl's convection definitely seems to be catching up to its center of circulation- now located near 20.5N/ 58W...and its still appears to be heading straight WEST at this point. St. Maarten, and some of the more Northerly Leeward islands should monitor the progress of Karl a bit more carefully. Marine interests should already have taken some precautions also. Better safe than sorry- All the time... Swell from Karl is already affecting our East Coast.

We are getting some very rainy weather from the system that was supposed to go north it has obviously decided to come south. We were off to Roseau today to do our weekly shopping and have decided to abort the trip!! Looking at the weather we could be in for a pretty wet day. Everyone be aware it could get wetter and we could have thunder and lightning we had thunder earlier this morning.

Hello all our Antiguan friends; it is 21 years to the day of Cat 4 LUIS. Laurie was playing at a Jolly Harbour prize giving the night before the arrival of LUIS; suprisingly a lot of people and yachties were nonchalantly getting ready for the God almighty hurricane. Hello! it's here.... We will never ever forget it 36 hours of pure hell with one hour or so let off as the eye passed over NW Antigua and Barbuda. Never ever under estimate the weather. |

Here in our valley I stealthily got ready to go out to Roseau feeling pretty confident that 92L has passed by!! WRONG, luckily, I was late setting off and by 10.45 a.m. the heavens had opened, I set off in my vehicle to be greeted my torrents of water pouring down the road like a torrential river! Getting higher I was stopped by debris from going further. Well, this turned out to be the best thing as I had to turn (with difficulty) and return home. The rain was out of its Mother Nature skull by the time I parked in the garage! So happy to be on safe ground! We still have stormy conditions but are having sunny periods, hopefully tomorrow we will be clear or 92L! We have to thank Domlec our electricity company for coming at 8.30 p.m. last night to put our reconnect our failing electricity. We were the only folks in the area without power.The Dominican schools were supposed to open today but the government decided to stop the event until tomorrow when we should be well out of the aforesaid 92L. We hope everyone on this island and all the others stay safe. The storm with no iconic name has and is depositing a great deal of rain.

92L's Low level center of circulation definitely seems to be well consolidated... More squalls are coming through at the moment -the worst still seems yet to come based on the radar/ satellite imagery...
Also, apparently according to radar imagery -it appears that the Northern part of Martinique may be getting the most intense convective cloud tops at the moment... Also, I've been informed that the conditions along the West coast are beginning to get rather gusty... Hopefully, there won't be much to report by morning's light.

- Stormy East Coast...

Sad but true- 92L means business. And current severe weather conditions are NO JOKE- This system takes the Cake for the most prolonged impact of Tropical storm Conditions IMO -for quite a few years.
So far there's a contrast of winds as seen on our meteorological website - weather.gov.dm
Because of our mountainous interior there is often a variance for at least a couple of hours between the winds measured on the East coast (which normally gets the brunt) vrs the West coast. I am on the North east coast of the island and the assault has been unrelenting for the last few hours -steadily worsening for the last couple of hours now (gusts to 35 knots and possibly higher have been recorded at the Melville Hall site and environs)...mixed in with moderate to heavy showers and flashes of lightning (though no peals of thunder can be heard as yet from my location). By now many tree limbs have littered the landscape...still its hard to imagine -although this is only an invest that the worst is still ahead of us...
Its now night...which I dreaded- so far the power is holding well with the Odd flicker earlier, however, I'm not certain whether it will last into the thick of the worst of the conditions which is still to come...the winds continue to howl and bio/ green litter is fully wind borne with strong gusts. So far just one flicker in the power for the late evening, some parts of the island are without power due to the conditions so I'm very grateful. The North east grid seems to be very robust as with several other tropical systems before -we are usually unaffected for electrical power.
In speaking to friends on the West coast earlier- unfortunately but customarily, they seemed complacent as they have not yet seen the intensity of gusts and wind damage we are already seeing on the East coast. However, as the night wears on -Unfortunately it seems pretty guaranteed that things may take a turn for the worst & this brief respite on their side will end.
At the moment we remain under a flash flood watch -However, I think an 'early warning type of local advisory- Tropical storm Watch' would have served residents better re:- awareness and critical preparation... As I've said before -The pre-classification advisories would certainly be welcomed in the Lesser Antilles Islands where often there is a sense of under-preparation and complacency surrounding approaching non-designated tropical disturbances that unfortunately often intensify near or over the islands -then subsequently deserving of Classification often sadly to the surprise/ shock of many residents. I was glad to see Jamaica/ Cayman put this into effect with 97L (Pre-Earl) and somewhat Puerto Rico for 99L (Pre- Hermine).
92L seems pretty set to be (Pre-Ian) -time will Tell...Beware of this potent system to all in its future path.

It rained heavily in the night waking us up at times. Rain hurtling down on our tin roof. We ourselves have no electricity which is a bummer. We have just had a huge thunder and lightning storm. Really heavy rain our deck is soaked. We have not heard of any damage yet. This tropical wave looks like being around all day. Everyone stay safe.

Just what I feared, it seems like 92L is Slowly strengthening as its center approaches the Lesser Antilles...
The system's low level center of circulation should pass near the Dominica/ Martinique area.
So far it has been a stormy afternoon with a brief a pause in the inclement weather during the early part of the evening... This system has no shortage of moderate to strong squalls. This is quite a potent and vigorous system, and although the worst is still ahead of us into the early morning hours.
Hopefully it will not do any quick or sudden intensification into a full fledged Tropical storm while directly impacting our islands. God be with us...definitely getting some gusts now with squalls At or very near to tropical storm force... I hope everyone is as well prepared as they can be for this system. And for those down the road 92L should not be taken lightly as this is delivering quite a strong blow (pun intended) to the central Lesser Antilles islands this early Sunday Morning. Hopefully we'll get through unscathed when its all said and done.

We have woken up to a perfect cloudless sky, the birds are singing and the garden is looking gorgeous. No one would believe we have we have had a couple of difficult days weather wise. To be honest I think the worst thing with the storms, hurricanes, weather depressions is how they actually affect us all mentally and physically. The first thing is that we all get prepared for the worst, make everything safe and then we wait and we wait and our imaginations work overtime. It is very, very unpleasant and no matter how many times we do this every time is different. This past experience for instance was a total thankfully non event we are so glad to report. It is nerve wracking though and every time it takes a toll on everyone, everyone that is, living in the Caribbean. It's half way through the hurricane season and let's hope that none of the islands have a bad hit. Here's to a lovely sunny weekend.

Dominica got her rain in the night, it has been pretty heavy at times with some gusty winds, nothing too dire. We are at the tail end of the weather front which has been pretty strange. This morning I am sitting on the deck and there is a definite chill in the air, hopefully as the day goes on we will once again be out of the woods and the sun will shine. It is the anniversary of Erika on Saturday and we still have a few more days to go before the end of August so hopefully we will have no bad weather.
A fact I'm not sure of....when a projection of cyclone activity is released for any given year, i.e. number of tropical storms, hurricanes etc. does a TS that becomes a Hurry - obviously with the same name - does the TS become negated in the count up?.... and can a TD in extreme circumstances go immediately to a Hurry 1? |

To God be the Glory! Thus far the worst we have had from 99L are some occasional rounds of light to moderate showers from late afternoon (Wed) which are most welcomed as a means of re-inforcing cool and pleasant temperatures islandwide. Training type showers and the odd thundershower have been affecting us so far through the night, however as long as they stay in the moderate range of intensity -all should be fine. Thoughts and prayers go out to those in the path of 99L or 'Pre- Hermine'...especially those in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

We all have stolen days and this was no exception. What a truly peaceful lazy day. We here in Dominica have been spared by the weather God (just joking)..The last 24 hours has been a surreal dream. We have tracked the weather system, it is still passing over us yet it decided to spare us a drop of rain. We can't say thank you enough. The day so far has just been so pleasant. We live in the Layou Valley our road is in such disrepair that we actually get hardly any traffic in a day passing by! We have no close neighbors so it is just us and our three dogs which are all puppies and us and boy is it wonderful. I am sitting on the deck looking out onto our beautiful green lawn, the trees beyond and then to the cliffs of the Layou river, this breeze is gentle and just rustling the leaves slightly. The birds are singing, I have to say this to us is pure paradise. How many folks would love to be in the most beautiful surroundings with absolutely no one disturbing them. Going to bed with your head on the pillow and not hearing a sound till you wake in the morning a little bit of magic and we are lucky enough to enjoy this every day. Long may it last, we sincerely hope are neighbors on other islands also did not have to bad a time with the weather front.
This is a photo of Mindy our newest puppy to the pack! Mindy is now 11 weeks old, her Dad is a pure black Labrador and her Mum half German Shepherd and local. We think she has more the Labrador gene. Mindy was trying to swim in the water drinking bowl so we have now bought her here own bowl which is now her swimming pool. Attachment:

What a very strange feeling! Last night we were sitting on our deck and the sky was amazing colours just before darkness. We are used to storms now so we got everything organized made sure the dogs were fine and then settled for the night. Not one single drop of rain, absolutely no wind just very, very still. I woke up several times in the night as I was expecting the heavens to open the rain to pour and the thunder and lightning and nothing has happened which of course is a terrific relief. Sitting on our deck writing this. There is not breeze at all the sky is grey in colour with the odd very white puffy cloud. It feels like we might be spared rain which will be amazing, looking at the weather it is as if we are in the middle of the passing over of the weather front. To be honest it is a bit surreal. We are breathing a sigh of relief. The birds are singing and the dogs are playing what could be better than this! |

The weather is perfect not a cloud in the sky it is sweaty hot! Well you see this is what storms do they suck up all the energy they can which makes them lively and able to drop a great deal of water on everyone. August is not a good month period in the history of Dominica. All we can say is if anyone is living near the rivers or water, please move to a safe place. If your location could be prone to landslide please move to a safe place. This storm maybe nothing but no one can take any chances, please everyone be safe. ONE LOVE as they say. It is better to be on the cautious side than to risk losing your life.

Indeed, most of the residents here in Dominica- though not under official warning- are by now aware of the approaching system and are making some kind of preparations. We are Preparing for the 'worst' but trusting and hoping for the best outcome...However, a few persons do not have a very good 'feel' about this system. Thank God for 6th sense and intuition also! Hopefully, it will not be too much of a powerful system given our recent vulnerabilities... Time will tell. 99L seems to want to give some challenge to the fearsome precedent left by Erika...we Sincerely hope not though. We are not looking forward to any surprise 'punches' from 'Pre Hermine.'
Later today will be quite 'interesting' I'm sure. We pray that we will be able to successfully mitigate whatever may come.

It is a beautiful day today, not a cloud in the sky, a beach day for sure. We are very relieved that 99L looks like it has dispersed we might get some rain at some stage later in the week, that is assuming that 99L does not decide to reform. We did do some serious shopping which is a good thing as we have a ways to go before the end of the hurricane season.

It is that time of year again August. Last year storm Erika who was not even a hurricane visited Dominica on 27th August and caused havoc. Dominica seems very vulnerable in August, we had the worst hurricane in August 1979 David! So 99L is approaching and could be on course yet again for Dominica; this will be nearly a year to the day of Erika! Unfortunately, many of our roads are in a very bad state and we still have Bailey bridges in several locations. We need to keep a very keen eye on the formation of 99L. Everyone should make sure they have their cupboards full of provisions, gas for the generator, batteries for torches. We all need to be prepared for the worst so that we keep safe. We seriously hope the weather passes us by this time.

Dominica had a fairly stable night. Here in our valley we had heavy rain showers but no thunder or lightning until 7.00 a.m. Lot's of sunshine this morning. Since 3.00 p.m. we have been experiencing heavy rain and thunder. The tail of the depression we believe. There has been a landslide reported at Bourne just outside Portsmouth. Hopefully, this will pass fairly quickly and we will have a peaceful night. I hope everyone here and in the other islands stay safe.

Here on the home front...
Ex 96L - is packing a punch of its own -as I personally expected; so there's no surprise here...as it impacts the islands (The normative- Boost due to the 'Lesser antilles/ islands rule' in my view- where systems approaching the islands generally tend to strengthen & organise somewhat...).
Rounds of thunderstorms & Thundershowers were affecting the island of the Commonwealth of Dominica from early morning but have since passed for now...
The morning commute had been snarled for certain- & most drivers would have been sensible enough to just stay out of these conditions & off the roads until some let-up in the conditions- especially in light of our recent terrible flood ordeal with Erika ('evil Erika') last year.
'Pre-Earl'- 97L was definitely a strong enough system when it affected us & was intense in convection in its own right, but there's something slightly more potent to some degree about Ex 96L's convective shower activity- so if full regeneration occurs later down the road its definitely a system to be watched (high flood potential rainfall rates)...Thank God further strengthening did not happen near/over the island chain- it would had much more serious impacts I'm sure. Currently Antigua and Barbuda seem to be most 'under the gun' I hope that all is well there...
Comparatively 'Pre Earl' (97L) gave us about 89mm in total yet Ex 96L has already given roughly 55mm and counting... -from just overnight into this morning & since after attempting to send this post (interrupted by lightning activity earlier -I took precautions) there has been about 49mm in addition.
It has likely exceed 97L's Totals perhaps island-wide since we are still having the type of rain that when another round of showers is coming- it can be Heard approaching from at least about a quarter mile out-(roughly 35 seconds lead time) definitely tropical cyclonic rainfall type- & not the usual tropical maritime (Not to be confused with Maritime Tropical BTW), & its not the usual Atlantic wave (AW) showers that's for sure. Hopefully, the showers should ease a bit by evening as indicated on the Martinique radar imagery.

It rained on and off all night. No thunderstorms luckily so we all had a peaceful night. After rain storms we often get bombed by flying ants and last night was no exception. We had to batten down the hatches. This morning I have had to sweep up lot's of dead bodies. 1st August here in Dominica we dread this month. 1979 Hurricane David and last year Erika visited in this month. We are hoping nothing hits us this year we are ill prepared for bad weather. It looks like Jamaica could be hit by 97 L. There is formation and it looks ominous. Good luck Jamaica we are watching.

I think its safe to say that this system is at least a Tropical Depression... As I observed yesterday's bad weather associated with the passage of 97L was certainly not the typical weather associated with just a strong/ vigorous tropical wave. We certainly had at least Tropical Depression conditions in certain parts of the island and perhaps even more so over in Martinique. The weather models seems to have been right in their future predicitions for the development of this system...Our thoughts and prayers to those who may now be in the path of what is Clearly T.S. Last night we had at 2.0 a.m. a thunder and lightning storm that was really loud and firework bright! Scary. The three dogs were scuttled into the house to keep them safe, the rain was torrential. They, the dogs - as far as we know - have never experienced full blown thunder. We have not heard of any bad things happening in Dominica so hopefully everything is fine. Ditto to the other islands too?

Indeed, at least from surface/ visible satellite representation the appearance of 97L continues to improve by the minute. Although with its forward speed combined with expected wind gusts this could be quite a damaging weather event for us in the Central Lesser Antilles...Hopefully not. Martinique has been getting hammered thus far throughout today by the various 'bands' and have raised their Alert level. Here in Nearby Dominica the winds have picked up again and it has been a stormy day from some time before midday to now...some more squall lines are now coming through. I truly hope we have not under-estimated 97L and its potential greater than perceived intensity. (Also, the Martinique Radar now appears to be showing a center of circulation/ LCC for 97L approaching the Martinique area...) Keep safe All & God Bless! |

What a strange day in the valley! We have had heavy rain on and off! The sun has its hat on too; it is a very mixed bag. As I write this, it is getting very cool and I have had to put shoes on to keep my feet warm. The birds were fed first thing and now they are asking for more food!!! If we look at the weather, should it be scooting west then it could be a very rough night for Dominica and our neighbors. If I was living in any area that could be prone to flooding and landslides, I might be tempted to stay with a friend at a safer location.
We have three puppies who have never ever seen or been in bad weather, aka tstms, so tonight they could all be sharing our space!!

Here in Dominica we have just had the first real 'band' of the system come through in the North east of the island. Pretty heavy showers with light -moderate gusts thus far... if this is a harbinger of what's to come later today/ tonight...we had better watch out. 97L seems to want to get its act better together.

Today the sun is peeping through the clouds, it looks like our tropical wave could be on it's way!
It rained a bit in the night but not as much as the night before; then the sound of the rain was reminiscent of being under a waterfall and it was pretty constant. Always cozy to be underneath the bedclothes. When I got out on our deck this morning the floor was covered in little black bodies of ants. This happens a lot when it rains heavily - the ants take off on a death flight, it is very annoying though if the windows and doors are not closed as the ants swarm, not nice at all. I had to use a lot of elbow grease cleaning up.
It is very cool and beautiful in our valley even when the sun is dispersing the moisture. It appears even though there has been quite a lot of rain, no real damage has occurred, hopefully. We hope everyone has a good week ahead.

Last night the rain came! On and off rain all night! I got up early and cleaned! Did that feel good. Yes. The weather all day has been on and off rain right now we are having constant heavy rain it is 2.45 p.m. Looking at the stormcarib the weather is getting worse. Everyone stay safe. It looks like this weather is here for the rest of the day and night. Any one living near rivers or prone to landslides should move to safety.

Here in Dominica we are experiencing seriously heavy rainfall. The time is 4.0 p.m. Monday 6th June. Looking at the system it could get a lot worse. People in unstable areas need to go to safety. If you are anywhere near a river or anywhere prone to landslides leave go somewhere safe. Please heed well this system.

Last night at 1.30 a.m. there was white lightning, thunder, whiter lightning, louder thunder..... I got up ran outside and brought bewildered dog Muffin into our house!.... the first time he had ever seen a storm! He is still a puppy in wonderment! It rained for maybe a hour or so and then was OK. There has been a deluge in the valley this morning and it has continued on and off all day. Looking at the weather featured on www, stormcarib.com it looks like we are going to have the same light show tomorrow. There will be updates from this neck of the woods as and when, but simply put, this is just too early in the hurricane season to have Tropical Storm Colin. Hopefully it's just a wetting..

The weather in Dominica for the last two days has been overcast. To me it looks like we are experiencing Sahara dust, not sure! Last night we had a lot of rain and this morning it is very dull, rainy and dark. We find it so interesting that the other islands have had really dry weather and yet here in Dominica we really have had quite a lot of rain especially here in the valley. Our garden is looking great, we are growing a lot of vegetables now and are looking forward to cucumbers this week!
We thought you all might like to read a true account of our friend rescuing a turtle. Unfortunately, people still seem to like to kill them and eat them although it is illegal.

Hurricane season approaches fast; Dominica had rain yesterday that was really intense, many rivers flooded and some roads became impassable. We sincerely hope this is not a sign of things to come. Dominica still has a lot of damage from hurricane Erika which was in August last year. August seems to be the month throughout history that Dominica gets hit. Hurricane David hit Dominica in August 1979. Dominica is fragile and cannot afford to be hit this coming hurricane season. So we hope and pray that the coming season will be kind to the Caribbean.
