Just got back from Long Island after accompanying my Dad for his winter sojourn.
We're located between Simms and Stella Maris and, as many have already stated,
fared much better than the South end, which was devastated, as the eye missed
us by about 80km. Still -- as you can see from the pictures -- a miss from a
category 4 hurricane isn't really a miss, and it will take about two years to
recover fully. Damage was just about identical to Lili in 1996, when the we got
the eye as a cat 2.
All wells are contaminated by salt, no landlines, internet, or TV, house needs
rewiring and massive cleaning from water intrusion (storm surge was about 2
metres here) but it could have been much worse. We have electricity -- you can
see that BEC has replaced poles and wiring, though there's lots to be done.
This was definitely a big one...

Good Day,
I'm back, finally! Enjoying this bright and sunny Sunday.
Was hoping to update during the storm, but everything went to hell so quickly. Made a few notes;
It's here!
Wind and rain.
Brutal assault!
12 midnight
Cell sites down ------------------------------------------------------ Then, at about 8:00am Friday morning
OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! (So terrifying, words can't explain). IT'S HERE!!!!
Ferocious Winds from the East, non stop gusting at an estimated 200 mph
Water started rising at 9 am, pushed in-land from the seaside.
Hastily exited home for higher ground along with 10 other neighboring families, some being rescued by boat. One family was found hanging onto a tree. ---------------------------------------------------- All is well! Thank You Jesus! Everyone safe on Long Island and throughout the entire southern Bahamas. However, expansive damages from Salt Pond to Gordon's in the south. Many roofs are gone, and many extensively damaged. Major flooding everywhere, resulting in so much material loss, (5ft of water in house, rewiring required), including many, many automobiles. Electricity still off, lots to repair and replace. Water was restored 5 days later and is on for several hours each day. The telephones are still down, much repairs are needed. Much, much, much needed and required. Thanking everyone both local and foreign for assisting us so quickly. May God continue to bless and keep you all. (Will send more pictures)

Yes was a disaster lots of damage to nearly all property I left the Island Sunday for Denver hoping my repairs will be done. The Power is still off on island & of course looting has started. Sandra.

We spoke this morning with clients in Abaco and Nassau. No effect from Joaquin.
Long Island severely damaged in the South but Stella Maris is open and operating so it appears the Northern end fared better but we are unable to contact by landline or mobile.
We have been told some cell towers have been knocked down.

- AFTER THE STORM

This storm has left a trail of suffering and destruction in its wake. The southern islands of the Bahamas experienced winds in excess of 100 mph. Storm surges drove boats into wooded areas past the shoreline. At least one airport was rendered unusable. Many persons remain without water, electricity or telephone services.
Several community groups in New Providence have joined with individuals and businesses to gather emergency supplies of food, water, clothing and medicine for those who have lost so much. The Bahamas Defence Force has been mobilized to assist in the response and recovery efforts.
These effort will be ongoing as there is much need in the affected islands, including Acklins, Long Island, Crooked Island.......to name a few. Bahamians in the US and friends of the Bahamas are all working together to assist in the face of this disaster. After this initial emergency response, there will need be community rebuilding and recovery.

Good Afternoon
Despite not being affected by the Hurricane in Nassau as the day has progressed we are hearing that it has been catastrophic on some of our islands
Just by taking my car to be cleaned I heard that in Long Island houses are devastated furniture is floating and many houses are severely damaged.
There is concern from families based here and trying to gey word from families is difficult
We are praying and looking at ways to assist as soon as possible

The breeze has picked up on the island of New Providence. Reports have started coming in from Bahamian islands in the south. There has been extensive flooding and loss of power. The storm is moving very slowly and is associated with heavy showers.
Earlier today in New Providence, foodstores, pharmacies and water depots were crowded as folks made final preparations for Joaquin. The Ministry of Education has announced that all public schools will be closed this Friday. The College of the Bahamas will also be closed. Government offices will close by 1pm , as will banks.
Everyone is encouraged to complete preparations and to stay indoors , remaining alert to the track and actions of the storm. |

It is eerily calm in Nassau
Preparations are taking place
We are hearing that conditions are pretty bad South of us and we are praying for our fellow Bahamians
We are erring the side of caution and putting up shutters stocking up with water and canned goods
We are fully alert and not waiting until the last minute to prepare
I think all of us are listening to the radio checking the National Hurricane Centre and watching the Weather Channel

Grand Bahama residents watch and wait. We have had some rain and wind last
night and today.
We just hope the low pressure system makes the forecast Northerly turn happen
soon and takes the storm away from us.
People are stocking up just in case but hope the preparations will not be
needed.

Had one small squall last night and one small one this morning at 0545, and both lasted five minutes. www.wunderground.com still shows CAT 3 and on to CAT 4, with general movement back out to sea, but as we know it’s a matter of how and when. |

At eleven o'clock last night, we experienced strong gusts, a little rain and a
dip in electricity. With that being said, many communities are experiencing
coastal flooding.

There has been a gentle breeze and intermittent light to medium rain on the island of New Providence. Folks have been observed calmly making preparations... then continuing with their regular daily activities.
We watch and hope for the storm to turn towards the open ocean, away from populated areas.
I will update as the storm passed by ( hopefully) or through( hope not!!) the Bahamas.

…JOAQUIN CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN…
AT 5PM EDT, THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM JOAQUIN WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 26.0°NORTH AND LONGITUDE 71.0°WEST OR ABOUT 405 MILES EAST OF THE NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS.
JOAQUIN IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-SOUTHWEST NEAR 5 MPH, AND THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.
REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 65 MILES PER HOUR (MPH) WITH HIGHER GUSTS. ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS AND JOAQUIN COULD BECOME A HURRICANE ON WEDNESDAY.

Good Day, in fact GREAT DAY! The sun is shining and there is a wonderful cooling breeze. We are thankful that Erika turned away from much of the Bahamas yesterday. Residents made suitable preparations but are very happy that this time they were not needed. Let's take a moment, however, to give prayers for those who were not as fortunate as us. Our brothers and sisters who lost homes and in some cases their lives, to this weather system.

Good Day All, residents have begun preparations for Erika. We had hoped to avoid this unwelcome guest but since she is determined to visit several of our islands, it is best to be prepared.
Folks have been observed buying bottled water, dried and canned goods. The sky was grey part of the day but the sun came out after all. We will wait for this weekend to quickly pass.
I hope I have nothing but good news to report !
