- Update from Martinique

Quick update for Martinique.

Took a quick tour in the north of the Island to see what had happened.

Many branches down, a few trees too. Apparently power was out most of last
night but its back on now. Talked to people who thought that this time it was
worse than Dean, looking at the mess of the garden of my future neighbour I'd
have to agree!

The authorities are out cleaning up the mess now, things will be back to normal
very quickly.

Here's  a quick update from Martinique :

Spent the night with very strong winds.  No instruments to measure but they felt similar to what we had with Dean at times.

The rain has continuously poured down without respite and at first light its still raining with some heavy wind gusts.  Will try to get some info on what's happened to the island, but no loss of power for us for now.

I'll be happy to see the back of Tomas !

Hi Gert,

This is Matthew, a british ex-pat living in Martinique.

Here's the situation since yesterday:

Friday 29th Oct :

The morning was as normal as can be, spoke with friends who were off to a holiday house to spend a few days on their boat.  It's a Bank Holiday here on Monday and Tuesday.  By midday we were starting to see reports of an intense wave that was going to give us a wet weekend.  By Friday afternoon it was clear that this was going to be a bit more than that.

I spent Friday night waking up regularly to check on reports as the wind was getting up and we were having intermittent rain, the outer arms passing over us.

Saturday 30th Oct :

Right from the early morning we have had nothing but gusts and rain all day and now into the late evening, sometimes heavy and strong, .  We're now waiting to see what the backend of Tomas is going to do, I suspect we are in for a lot of rain and wind again, possibly more than today.

Infrastructure seems to be OK, I haven't had any power outages but my brother in law has been out since this afternoon, although I think thats an exception.  There's lots of leaves and small branches littering the roads, but I haven't heard of any reports of trees down.  Every now an again the lights go dim and then come back up as normal, but that's about it.

For now we're getting successive waves of wind and rain, nothing too bad but by tomorrow I'm sure we'll see that a lot of rain has fallen on Martinique.

I'll send an update tomorrow morning.
