Yesterday lots of folks promised pictures, but they just haven't turned up. Could be they are busy cleaning up after the damage and just haven't had time to send them off....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This came in yesterday, don't know HOW I missed it, but will post it anyhow:
EMAIL:
This from a friend on Tortola:
Checking in from Nanny Cay. The finger pier that one of our boats is tied to started to give way but we caught it in time and were able to jury rig the dock. The dock looks like a giant game of cat's cradle but I think it will hold.
The eye is passing about 30 mi. NE of Anegada as I write this. We are experiencing on and off heavy rain and some very strong gusts but not too terribly bad. The hurricane party is going stong in the Marine Consultants shop. Chicken on the grill, curry potato salad, and plenty of greenies. In party mode but still watching everything carefully, just in case. Storm surge starting to take effect but nothing drastic here on the south side of Tortola.
By the way, do you know that A, B, can C docks are from the Southampton Boat Show in England in 1987. They have been extensively repaired, but are still the originals underneath.
Cheers
I'm not surprised!
Hello MissMermaid....
I was just viewing through the StormCarib.Com website, all your postings and pictures regarding Hurricane Earl, hitting the BVI this morning....
I fell in love with the people and the island of Tortola, BVI back in 2003, while serving as a Guest Speaker at a Women's Ministry Conference.  It was shortly after that I became aware of the StormCarib.Com website, which I find to be one highly accurate source for following the Hurricanes updates, prior to our local USA updates.
Please know that our heartfelt prayers are with you all, for much safety and at most "very, very, minimal to No" damages and/or injuries.  Believing for you all not to be without the necessity living utilities, for any great length of time....In Jesus Name!!!
Although the forecast models are showing Hurricane Earl to miss Florida, we still keep a close eye, with regards to our Florida coastline, knowing all too well how the weather can change in the spur of a moment.  God's Ultimate Best of Blessings to You and the BVI...Always.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THANK YOU!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you…..you have been doing a terrific job keeping us informed as to the conditions in the BVI!!
Did you get the email i sent this morning?
As extra I went and found boats Elektra and Yes Dear and they are both safe :)
Let me know if you got the pictures from this morning
YIKES!  Let me toss my email all over again, no pictures yet...
Nanny Cay update:
I just talked to the staff at Horizon Yacht charters and at Virgin Traders Yacht Charters.  They both indicated that all their boats were ok.  Marina has some damage but not at the back end of the channel.  Said their email and computers would likely be back up tomorrow.  These were the companies where their staff spent the night running up and down the marina tying off boats as they burst their lines.
They reported that Roadtown was a mess with the customs dock and building having sustained damage.
I cant wait to see pictures from the area.
Thanks for all your doing too.  We all owe you a big hug and a bottle of RUM!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, send RUM!

A friend called who had spoke to Rudy of Rudy's bar in the mountains, he fared OK, but loads of trees down all over the place.

Hello

I just wanted to let you know that I stumbled across stormcarib.com while fumbling through the internet trying to find some sort of update on the storm in the virgin islands. I watched the site all throughout the day yesterday for updates. My parents are in St. John and I haven’t heard from them in almost two days—can’t get through to their cell phone and they do not have the internet. Thank you for your updates and for giving me some sort of peace of mind. They are supposed to fly home tomorrow to Florida but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Again—I just wanted to say thank you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is no official word on when ferries and airplanes might start running again. Many folls most work to clear the roads from their neighborhoods as well as throughout the island, the ferries have to be checked for damages and removed from their hidy holes, plus rounding up the crew to run them.
Planes left the area, and will fly back in at some point, to resume service. No official word on any of this. I understand Tortola is still without power.
St John, is often the last to get their power back, as they are fed through St Thomas.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Miss Mermaid

thank you for your posts yesterday, they kept those of us who live in the Northern climes aware of what was going on. Having orginated in the Caribbean I wish to thank you for your efforts. Keep up the good work

PS Don't let those naysayers get you down, just give them the finger
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tee hee hee, that's funny and made me laugh!
Let me get on my soap box stand...  Before elections, the politicians drive around the island, on trucks with generators and  these MEGA SPEAKERS blaring out their messages into otherwise quiet neighborhoods, urging you to vote for them and so on.  It can be rather annoying as they try to make the speakers SO LOUD that you can't even use your telephone or chat with someone in the same room with you.
I know, I've seen and heard this time and time again.
Knowing that many islanders are not glued to the news or internet, then WHERE were those noisy trucks with the BIG SPEAKERS before the hurricane?
Why weren't they out in the neighborhoods, warning folks to get ready for the hurricane (or the potential threat of a hurricane)?
Where were those politicians with their trucks and super loud speakers?
Last night, quite a few people promised to send pictures over this morning, but not much has turned up but the 4 I posted, I will post any that show up as soon as they arrive.
Hurricane Earl has gone by, Fiona is on her way and now the future Gaston is plotting his course...
MESSAGES
Sopers Hole Marina...
Thank you for your E-mail.  I got information from one of the workers of the Marina and he told me that as of sunset yesterday none of the boats in the yard were damaged.  However, there are a good number of the boats that were left the docks and at anchor that are sunk or on the rocks.  I have not new news this morning.
Again, Thank You for keeping the information flowing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Just wanted to say thanks for all your efforts in keeping folks informed, you did a terrific job!  You were my eyes on Anegada.  Word from Neptune’s Treasure this morning is property sustained damage but nothing that can’t be fixed.  The dock and seawall are in shreds.  My family is safe and that’s all that matters.

Thanks again for your humour and wit during these stressful times.  I’m sure I’ll be watching again as Fiona heads that way.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just got a text from Julian at Tortola Yacht. Boats are ok.
Please post.
Thanks!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A thank you note for your efforts and updates. Tracking from Canada but have a business on St. Thomas. Your updates were the best/most consistent I've come across for the area. Thank you.
Good luck.

  Dear Miss Mermaid,

I would like to add to the chorus of thanks for such a fantastic job
keeping all of us off-island informer.  Though  I know we were "lucky"
to not be ther.e, I think many of us wish we could be around to help
with the clean-up.

All the best -

From the Mailbag:
Thanks for all you've been doing during this storm.  You have made a difference.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are in England, but have a boat at Nanny Cay and many good friends in BVI.
Thank you very much for all the information you have managed to post.  We have
been constantly watching for news of the Islands.
Bit worried this morning, when nothing came out for a while, but you must all be
whacked.  Best wishes to all the islanders and keep up the hard work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not sure if this gets to you but I have been following your blog this afternoon

I own a management company in BVI (RT & N/Cay) and am unfortunately in Chicago and away from my office, team and house

All our yachts are hauled on the hard at Nanny Cay, two are in water in V/Cay and 4 in water at Nanny Cay

My ops manager indicated at around 4:30pm that they had checked N/Cay and not seen any major damage to yachts in or out of the water

Reports from Paul at V/Cay was that there was no damage there to any of our yachts and the storm surge was minimal, wind just changing from the NW to Sw – that was at around 5pm

Reports are that Cane Garden and West End got hit pretty bad – I’ll know more tomorrow morning

My house in Cane Garden had faired OK – no major damage, winds were out of the NW.  I called them at around 9pm and winds were abating

All eyes of FIONA now

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can't believe someone would dare to criticize you!  Many of us at a distance from the islands with boats we are worried about are relying on you for up to date information that is unavailable elsewhere.  I'm sure I speak for many when I say bless you for doing this.  Please take care of yourself - we need you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You must be exhausted after a very long day of getting out the updates from the BVI.  I know that so many appreciate your effort.  Give yourself a good pat on the back and you and Harley sleep well.  I hope all are safe (especially our friend da Wayward Sailor) and their property, boats, etc. are not damaged.

Note from Dear Miss Mermaid
***Harley is my little goofy puppy dog, who was super patient while I was glued to phone and internet

THANK YOU ALL for the wonderful and kind words.

   Looks like St. John dodged the bullet, but the island of Anegada probably got hit really hard, hope everyone is safe there

Taken with my GPS, sorry not better.

Total damage I found this morning to boats – one very large gunboat catamaran has a punctured hull skin from hitting a dock, but well above waterline. A couple boats have dock rash. A couple roller furled jibs were left up and are shredded. That’s it. All I found. Generally the marina did excellent, docks received little damage, a couple floating dock to piling retainers have broken (one my fault, as my chains got stuck on it…) and two finger piers on D-Dock broke off, but the boats stayed put.

On land, all boats seemed to have done fine, no damage sighted.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note from the honeymooners on Virgin Gorda:
Thank you all for the well wishes. Please keep the bvi in your
thoughts. We have not yet been outside - storm is still upon us - but
blogs from around the islands are reporting significant damages due to
high winds, rain, and rising sea levels. Power is out across the
islands and no potable water.  To top it off there is another storm
forming behind Earl.  We are grateful to be safe and dry in a hotel on
high ground with a generator. And -amazingly- we have sketchy and
slow, but functioning, wifi.
Looks like we may not be leaving for a few extra days. All airline and
ferry boat services have been shut down for an unknown length of time.
Hopefully we can be of help with the cleanup if we're stuck here.  May
stop by the health clinic to see if they need any help.
What an adventure!
MESSAGES...
Am surprised to read on stormcarib this morning that you received a critical e-mail. I watched this one out from London with my loved one back on Tortola. They had next to no information and the 'updates' from ddm were rare. Between you and the NHC I felt like I knew what was going on and was able to relay info back on to Tortola  - so I thank you. Hoping that things don't look too bad in the morning light for you all x
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to thank you for the information you are putting out regarding the hurricane and the islands.
We are in the UK and have absolutely no news.  I found your site by persistence only.
My daughter's boyfrind lives and works on Necker.  Everything is shut down and she is natually very concerned.   It's the usual not knowing and imagining, however, althought the news from the other islands is bad, it is news.  This way she is more aware of just how badly the poor little exposed Necker is suffering.  Thank god my girl isn't out there right now.

So keep up the good work and keep reporting, especially with Fiona on the way.  Never apologise for what you feel, the critic will always be the critic and dont waste valuable energy worrying if you have been too harsh.  Critics are never in the wrong!

Kind regards

Everything is fine at nanny cay. The old derelicts that were anchored dragged into the bushes. Some docks are broken, but all boats are floating. I see only one yaht damaged so far, 'the end of the line' has her bowrail and rubrail damaged from one derelict dragging. Cleats are NOT broken, docks are not adrift, all Is okay in Nanny Cay. Photos shortly.

Hope you survived the night and are OK.  I did have a moment of silence for the Bomba Shack....too sad but sure it will be rebuilt by the time I get there in April.  Went to a couple of Full Moon parties and they were a little much for our crowd.  Many blessings to all in the BVI.

Another email update:
Just heard from folks at Hidden Treasure at Cow Wreck   " Everyone ok. Winds dying down. Little damage. Time for rum!"

He will text more info in the morning. Power/Internet out. South side got hit from seas, but sounds encouraging so far. Will pass along additional info as I get it.

FROM DEAR MISS MERMAID...

The little damage sounds good, but other reports indicated more damage... and by all means pass the rum!

Also, several folks are promising to email pics in the morning, when it's daylight, so hopefully we'll have some pics of BVI in the morning. A BIG thank you in advance...

On a sad note, someone sent me a harsh email criticizing me... blah blah blah, I almost slammed the laptop shut and went to bed. But I wrote him back, explained I was just a  lowly volunteer, trying my best here. I also said, it is so much easier to sit back and criticize, than to get up and go help out...  (Gosh, I hope I didn't offend him, maybe this grumpy Mermaid needs a snack, cause I think I skipped lunch and dinner.)

StormCarib.Com is powered by volunteers.

One thing I do know about islanders, especially in the BVI, is that as soon as they can get out and about after the hurricane, there will be a flurry of activity, cleaning roads for passage as well as cleaning up the general mess. Feel free to volunteer with the "grunt work" if you are able.

Dear Miss Mermaid,

Just heard from the North Shore. All is well. Lost trees, but roofs are good. Road looks clear from the 700 foot view above Bomba's. Winds are calmer. God Bless you all.

THANK YOU from all of us!

From Nanny Cay boat...

I can update again now because as long as nothing goes drastically wrong we are staying on the boat.

We now have 17 ropes holding our boat to the dock! The surge has dropped so we are not rolling around as much but the wind is still strong- more at tropical storm speed though rather than hurricane. As the eye of the storm moves away from us everything seems to be getting better except for the rain. The rain is pouring down and isn't showing signs of stopping soon.

All the guys from Horizon are still out in the rain doing all they can to help- They are the only people out there despite there being over 100 boats in the water and about another 100 on land.

According to  ZBVI, Bomba’s Shack is no more…

Yeah, but he will rebuild it posthaste with the usual junk that washed up on shore... It was built out of "found" debris anyhow... and the underwear donations..so get ready to send Bomba some more undies to hang up after the hurricane!

Reports on ZBVI that Soper’s Hole/Frenchman’s Cay is/was (?) getting quite seriously hit with yachts having broken free from their moorings.

EMAIL ABOUT ANEGADA...

Just got word from my brother in Ft. Myers, Fl….he spoke to my cousin Mark’s son (Mark riding out storm in Hurricane Hole, Tortola, but he spoke to family in Anegada) Family is Ok, lots of debris around, roof holding but shingles torn off.  Large dock is gone; seawall is being torn to shreds.  North side of island major flooding, cars washing out to sea.  They turned off generators last night and have not turned them on again so no power on property.  They’ll report back to us later tonight.

EMAIL ABOUT PENNS LANDING

 W.  said he thinks things are beginning to quiet and that the worst has passed, but he's so tired, he doesn't know for sure...

Earlier a boat came loose at harbour  view and was drifting towards Penns landing, NO IDEA whose boat...

There are two boats now loose but washed up near the fuel dock at Alphonsos gas station next to penns. One of them a 45 footer brushed up against a  charter cat  , at Penns. Hopefully no damage.  We don't know where the other boat came from.

 I just talked to
A.G.  at Trellis Bay who said Relaxin  is fine and the waves in
Trellis weren't huge and Trellis is protected now with wind from SW.
Another boat had dragged its anchor into another boat.  (I think Relxain is a boat in Trellis)

- HURRICANE EARL has NOT left the islands
  • By DearMissMermaid at aol.com
  • Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 20:14:00 EDT
Tropical Storm FIONA is 890 miles east of the Leeward Islands. She is building up, so this could be a double whammy.   Another mess is behind Fiona.

HURRICANE EARL has NOT left the islands. NOAA reports his eye has left, but the rest of him, has not.

Pray for angels, we surely need them now.

I've had lots of requests about various parts of Tortola. My crystal ball is clouding up from all the work.

Tortola is roughly 25 miles long and 2 miles wide. If it's bad in one place, it's probably bad down the road too.

IF you manage to talk to ANYONE in the Virgin Islands, please email the information. Every little bit helps. However, power and water is down in the BVI and not likely to improve anytime soon.

Cell phone towers may go out of service again and may or may not come back up.  It could be hours or days.  No one knows.

Folks in the islands are now IN THE DARK, a few may have generators, but many just have candles, some have nothing, because the storm caught them off guard. Many will not be able to recharge their cell phones once their battery dies.

Please make donations to the RED CROSS as I am sure the islands will need some help afterwards.

Many scams will pop up of folks promising to set up help and asking for donations. You can trust the Red Cross, they've been helping folks since the 1800's!    Put your money where it goes to good use.

Tree in Nanny Cay garden, the grounds are SOAKED and more trees are giving way...(this is from earlier today, the writer says things are 10x worse now)

From a boat owner at Nanny Cay:

just went outside and nearly got blown off my feet. our wind speedometer has stopped working as it has reached the maximum speed of 110knots. Rain has got harder and there is a constant wind speed of 40knots coming through the harbour.

i cant get along to the end of the marina... it is coming more from the west so we have less protection from the hills now. just hoping for everyone's sake that it doesn't start to come from the south.

Everyone is just trying to make sure that everything is secure for the night

The pictures are from earlier today just make them 10x worse and its what they look like now.

724pm, email from a boater in Nanny Cay

My boat is in the water but I have spoken to the guys in the marina and they say that so far all the boats that are not in the water are doing fine. I hope your boat will be ok  because when one of the boats fall over when their on land its like dominoes falling over. Right now I cant go and check on your boat.

Weather isn't showing any signs of clearing up. The cleats on the pontoon that were holding our boat in have been completely ripped out. At the moment we have 7 ropes holding us on and 2 anchors out. and our mast has still managed to get to about 25degrees...

The weather is showing no signs of clearing- if anything its getting worse.

I don't know when i will next manage to report as we have been told we might have evacuate our boat if the pontoon snaps.

Yacht (name removed) - Nanny Cay- Out.

WHOA folks, the hurricane is NOT over. It's still passing over the Virgin Islands. Most folks are stuck at home, a few are stuck at work. There is no power, no water and phone service is very random and often overloaded.

We are getting a small avalanche of email requests from anxious boat owners, who are off-island, asking us to run check on their boats. I can certainly understand your concern.

However, StormCarib is run entirely by volunteers. All the information, I have been posting is from volunteers.

Thousands of boats are stored in yards throughout the Virgin Islands, and many are still in marinas. Some are with companies, managers or crew, some were left on their own.

Be grateful, you can afford to be somewhere else right now, rather than in the middle of a hurricane. You may have to wait, several days to find out the exact disposition of your boat.

If you left it in the boatyard, then chances are, it's still in the boatyard.  So far there are no reports of any boatyards floating away. Over the past few years the boat yards have radically changed the way they store boats, so that they are better protected all around for a hurricane.

Hopefully, you have insurance on your boat.

Many people living in the islands do not have insurance on their home or contents.  So many may suffer losses that will not be reimbursed.

After the hurricane, EVERYONE will be super BUSY trying to clean up the mess.  The phones, if working at all, will be overloaded. So this might be why it could be a problem for thousands of boat owners to start demanding information immediately on their beloved yacht. We understand your concern, but understand the islands are going through a BIG hurricane and all things take time.

Also FIONA is on the heals of hurricane  EARL, so things could be really strange really quick.

Any information I have, is posted here.

NOTE FROM SOMEONE AT NANNY CAY:

Nanny Cay is in the second part of the storm now- the worst part. The wind has picked up and the boats are well tipped up. Ropes have snapped on some of the boats and we have been told to pack up our belongings as we may need to get off the boat in a hurry. Torrential rain is still pouring down and the marina is a mess- as far as vegetation, chairs and anything that has not been tied down is concerned.

Will update on any changes.

Some reports I have picked up:

From Aaron Soares re: Anegada logged at about 4:30pm.

"Our property: the dock is gone, Uncle Dean's dinghy & small boat are gone. The seas are breaking our sea wall and dumping on the restaurant roof. The felt paper on Dad's roof is gone and the seas are going to the back of the property next to the cottage. All other buildings there are OK.

The Hotel up the beach, 1/2 the dock is gone. Potter's roof is lifting/leaking and dock is almost gone.

The ferry dock is under water. The cash & carry is under water as well and their rental cars are flooded inside.

All of this is on the southern side of the island, so just imagine the northern side where the real [censored] is happening! :("
From guest at house at Loblolly about 5PM:

"Things on the north side, by Lavenda Breeze, seem to be ok for right now. Some trees down. Water not coming up over the dune. Seems like the west end and south got it worse, though Cow Wreck may be a wreck."

 Hi again. Man at Penns Landing just reported another boat came loose from Harbourview?  and drifting towards Penns? Lots of swearing and then said  I'll call you back. The weather is so bad that he can't really get outside at all.

517pm
Very concerned about family living on Anegada…any news from there?

Nothing yet, since the earlier report (somewhere below in a previous post) but maybe somebody will clue me in...
DM Mermaid

338pm

Do they usually wait until the winds die ways down to say 20mph before they start the ferries again? Assuming of course it is not storming.

First they have to get the ferries out of hiding and check them thoroughly for damages. Then they need for the crew to show up for work. The crew could live anywhere on the island and be blocked by downed trees, rock slides, missing roads that washed away or they may be busy cleaning up their own damages and just can't get to work at all. So there is no official time when the ferries will be running. Of course people will be anxious for the ferries to start back up, so they will, just no idea when.

At this point, it's impossible to make any travel plans at all, to or from or around the islands.

The planes have also all left the area, so it will take some time for the planes to come back, also for the employees to show up at work, and for things to get going again. After a hurricane, one needs TONS upon TONS of sheer patience.

The best thing to do after a hurricane, is get out and help clean up the mess. Extra hands are always needed. It might be helping to clear roads, helping to pick up blown away possessions,  helping to clean up other businesses or homes, there is always tons of work to be done after the hurricane.

Someone wrote and said Fly BVI has their planes off island, but are planning to get to Anegada and help out as soon as they can. Sounds like their planes will be a big help, if they can get there with supplies and stuff.

From Dear Miss Mermaid to the honeymooners on Virgin Gorda:

If you can survive the hurricane, the lack of power and water, the uncertainty of it all, and still get along fine, then you will probably stay happily  married a very long time.   Besides, this gives you an excuse to go on a 2nd honeymoon in the future!

Just saw your posting about Cane Garden Bay....how is Long Bay?  Hope you are safe.....is it over now?

No word from Long Bay yet, no it's not over, Hurricane Earl is BIG, winds extend over 200 miles from the center, so that makes about 400 miles across.  Current winds are 135 miles per hour!  YIKES!

503pm
There has got to be some Fiona jokes coming ....

415pm
From Harbour View area, this person called someone who then sent me this email:

...He said that things were quiet in between rain bands.  There were several locals out on motorcycles then once the rain bands came back they were off the road.  He put the phone up so that i could hear the wind and it was ferocious.

415pm
Looks like on the Cruz bay web cam a very nice yellow dingy has found a new home!

Those nailed boards are no match for the ocean surge.

A video from the honeymooners on Virgin Gorda, email was 154pm, so video was shot before that.   It just reached me, and here's the link:

At 445pm, before I posted the link, I received this update from the same honeymooners on Virgin Gorda sent via texting:

“Local radio says flooding on Jost Van Dyke. Seas have risen 3-5 feet (not waves just height). Winds are still extremely high. Still raining hard. Never seen anything like this”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This in at 429pm
In response to the person inquiring about their boat in Nanny Cay.
I am also on a boat in Nanny Cay-
The wind is coming in strong in continuous gusts for the last few hours. There is a lot of damage to signs and to all of the vegetation and up at the entrance to the Marina the waves are flooding up onto the shore. So far there are no sunken boats or boats with bad damage.
All the boats here have numerous lines securing them and many have anchors out so even though there is a swell coming in they are secure.
The small floating docks are holding up ok except for a few that with the constant tug from the boats have lifted at one side or have had the cleats ripped out.
All boats are being watched and if anything can be done to be made more secure it is. All the guys from Horizon yachts are working hard to keep everything safe.
What is the name of your boat and what does it look like? I will go and check if it is ok if you would like.
I will give updates if anything changes.
- Message from Sea Cow's Bay telephone Tortola BVI
One emailer, reports his GPS indicates his boat is still around H dock in Nanny Cay, where he left it two weeks ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Phone call from a person in Sea Cow's Bay follows:

What's the weather like in Sea Cow's Bay?

"shitty, real shitty!"  Yep, that's an official quote!

OK, here's more info from the phone call from 250pm today:

Last night was horrible in Sea Cow's Bay, the power lines caught on fire, right outside my window.  Just after midnight, the power and water went off. As of 250pm Monday, all of Tortola is without power and water.

Currently high winds, high sea swells.

Nanny Cay marina was packed FULL as of late last night, the ferries had also taken refuge up in Nanny Cay. So far the marina is reported to be holding up OK.

Anegada is flooded with many cars washed out to sea. One lady said the ocean was up to her window in her Anegada home. Many cars are destroyed from the flooding.

The government ferry dock is completely underwater or completely destroyed at Anegada, unclear which it is. Things are terrible in Anegada.  They are a flat island and really got hit hard.

Cane Garden Bay is all mashed up, the sea is in the road behind the beach.

Roofs are blown off in Anegada and East End.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So far no fatalities or injuries reported (per a Fire Department employee to another person who called me)
In the mailbag:
Any word on Nanny Cay?  I have a boat that I keep there and have not been able to get any info
I am posting ALL information I receive it,  from across the Virgin Islands.  If it's bad in West End, and plenty rough in East End, then Nanny Cay is in the middle of the mess. I haven't heard from a soul there either.
However, the harbor at Nanny Cay is somewhat protected by the manmade breakwater and the natural reef. On the other hand, they have floating docks in the marina,  that bounce up and down with the storm surge.
Those are the new docks, that replaced the others that were wiped out from past hurricanes, and they aren't that new, as that was 10-15 years ago. I think it was the Luis and Marilyn hurricanes that took out the old docks in 95 or 96. I remember hopping and jumping from parts of the dock to other parts, as after the hurricanes passed, they tried to chain the remaining pieces of the docks back together, but still in some places, we were jumping 3 feet from one section of dock to another. I could be wrong about which hurricanes took out the old docks, I would have to dig back through my archives. No time for that at this moment...sorry...
I do remember an outside crew showed up to replace the docks and their BVI work permits were not ready, but they started work anyhow as they had a time schedule to keep, plus everyone was hollering for docks. They drank in the bar at night and gave us tidbits of info. The last week of completing the docks, the Labor department announced their work permits would be ready in a few more weeks. They rushed to complete the dock work, then left the islands in a hurry. I remember they were sad to leave, because they wanted to hang out and enjoy the beaches, but their work permits weren't ready and the boss told them to just fly home.
this picture reads 216pm from Leverick bay, but I am not sure that is accurate at all
They just texted that it is pretty wild with things blowing around in the air – flying debris and such and the ocean is looking pretty crazy with huge waves. They may not go out for a bit but they see locals driving by every few minutes or so. Probably no big deal when you are used to a hurricane.
 Yes, he is in Tortola and has been working furiously to get the boats ready.
 He said that presently Trellis bay and anything on the north is getting hammered.
 Fortunately right now the hills are blocking some of the wind from  Penns, until the eye passes and then I predict the winds will shift to the south and we will be more exposed.
Cruz bay St John , the dinghy dock is getting washed over by waves
1pm
I just used Skype to call a CCT cell phone in the BVI and finally got through!  My friend says the electricity has been off since 4am in the East End area.  Gusts of wind come and go, it's raining.  She talked to someone who talked to someone in Anegada, who said they were getting hit pretty badly but nothing specific. Anegada is a flat island with short trees, so I imagine it's pretty rough there.
I tried to look at a radar map, but it said it was down for maintenance.   Helluva time to do maintenance on it.
- People on the dock in Cruz bay during hurricane Earl
I am saddened that many folks did very little to prepare for Hurricane Earl until the very last minute. I know they might have believed all the initial reports, that it would miss the Virgin Islands. But having suffered through more than quite a few hurricanes, in various ports, I've noticed that the proposed tracking is often very wrong. Someone should send Mother Nature a memo about this!
Last season, I prepared for a storm by myself on Tortola. I was super weak, as it was just before or just after my lengthy hospital stay. My housemate refused to lift a finger to help with a thing. He ran off to find out which girlfriend was going to adopt him for the storm.
I still got ready for the worst, because I didn't want to be caught unaware. Well the storm passed over, and we had minimal damages, some rock slides on the roads, a few trees downed and so on. My housemate came home eventually boasting that he was an islander, and therefor "knew" these storms intuitively, and constantly berated me for getting prepared for the storm.
I didn't regret getting ready,  being a sailor, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Yesterday, my friend was super happy and on her boat when I called her to ask if she was ready for the hurricane. She didn't even know a hurricane was coming. I pray that she and everyone else, found safe harbor for the storm and that all will be well, eventually.
Hello, I saw your blog. Thanks for the updates and photos.  My daughter and son in law are on VG  on their honeymoon. They were on Mango Bay in a beach cottage  and I moved them to Old Yard Village last night. They estimate winds of around 60-70 mph started around 4am. Rained hard so that water comes in under door but no flash flooding. A few tree branches down with vertical palms, early this AM when they could see.  They both have iphones and have had internet off and on plus texting works fine.
Cruz Bay St John cam updated at 10:11am
I am still amazed at the boaters who left their boats in the harbor. The dinghy dock has taken a beating and boards are popping off. As I recall it was built with nails and not screws, which is never a good thing at all for a dinghy dock. The camera has been blown off course, from previous views.
That white thing looks like a private mooring ball, and is that orange thing a small life jacket?  The white rectangle reminds me of an access panel on my sailboat.
