Looks like we're in for some much
needed showers today and this weekend!! I saw the ITCZ coming for
some days now but was afraid to post in case I put a jinx on The whole
thing (Trini's call it Goat
mouth:)
We've had more
brush fires this year than I can remember, so even though the land is
dry please watch out for plenty water runoff especially near the the
mountains (a lightning strike just knocked out the power so I'm on
emergency backup) possibly bringing down lots of mud. Watch out for
landslides as well if the rain becomes heavy and sustained.
Main thing is ...RAIN!!!! Thank God.
Stay safe everyone, Lorne

Gert, I've copied your "How to help" message to my Facebook Profile Page, and asked all my friends to put it as their profile so it can reach more people. It might be an idea for others reading this to do the same, as the world comes to terms with the situation in Haiti.
If you want to give now now, grab your phone and text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief ...efforts, and charged to your cell phone bill. Not sure if it works in the Caribbean though. You can also text "Yele" to "501501" to donate $5 to Wyclef Jean's grassroots organization ( http://www.yele.org ).

Santa is now finishing his work in the United Kingdom. After being to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and so many other countries, I'm having trouble keeping up with him!
After England, Santa will be crossing The Atlantic Ocean, then to Greenland, Canada, The United States, The Caribbean, South America and the Antarctic.
Dear Gert, THis is an alert based on 2 confirmed deaths due to the H1N1 influenza virus in Trinidad yesterday. It is my opinion that the situation warrants free face mask distribution through all health centres, hand sanitisers to all schools immediately and what geographical location the patients came from. Also the Ministry of Education should have a policy on sick children attending school at this time.

I've been looking at a tropical wave, now it looks like a tropical depression heading towards Trinidad and the Leeward islands.
It should reach us by late this afternoon bringing very heavy and sustained (flood) rain.
The land is already saturated so use appropriate precaution when
driving through flood prone areas. My sister in law's car last was
totaled last month in Arima by one of these guys.
- Water ORDEAL!

Well, what an ordeal it must have been for some in the Nature Isle Dominica
today and no doubt also Guadeloupe/ Antigua... Uninhibited Water from the
heavens for hours, However, Knowing the likes of the islands of Dominica and
Antigua pretty well, I'd be more concerned for Antigua if the rains keep on
coming as they do from what is at least for the moment a downgraded Tropical
storm Erika.
-But Tropical Depression Erika could always gather more symmetry and
organisation of convection around its low level center so those in the Virgin
Islands and Puerto Rico should not become complacent.
The blog from Dr. Jeff Masters this morning (2:12 PM GMT on September 03, 2009)
was pretty much on the mark as regards the overnight onslaught of rains on
parts of the Nature Isle Dominica:
...Erika is hanging together despite strong wind shear, and is bringing high
winds and much-needed heavy rain to the Lesser Antilles Islands. Winds on the
south shore of Dominica Island were sustained at 37 mph this morning, and 8.03"
of rain have been measured at the airport over the past two days. Winds and
rain at nearby islands have been less..
Its a major reminder for us and CDEMA also that no matter the type of weather
system we should always BE PREPARED especially as we enter the climatological
peak of the hurricane season! Blessings!

- Some method to Erika's Unpredictability?
From: Micheal Colaire <nichs2002 at yahoo.com>
Date: Wed, 2 Sep 2009 21:46:41 -0700 (PDT)
It seems as if Erika is succeeding in pulling its intense convection under its
main (most dominant) low level circulation (there seems to be about three).
Now the Center of circulation appears to be almost fully defined on the FWI
radar. At 12:00 a.m. Canefield airport in Dominica was still reporting
thunderstorm conditions but with winds out of the north at 9 kts. Dominica is
surely getting variable wind conditions from this storm. Let's see what morning
brings...
God Bless us all!
- Erratic Erika...
From: Micheal Colaire <nichs2002 at yahoo.com>
Date: Wed, 2 Sep 2009 20:26:14 -0700 (PDT)
Good night all,
Well it seems that the greater bit of lightning from Erika which St. Lucia was
reporting earlier definitely appears to be affecting the islands of Dominica,
Martinique and so far to a lesser extent Guadeloupe.
Conditions at Dominica's smaller airport, Canefield, in the south at 10:00 P.M.
reported; Thunderstorm- Winds: South-South Easterly at 10 gusting 25kt. (By
11:00 P.M. winds have shifted from the West-hmm? Erratic Erika again!) The
Meteorological services of Dominica have been putting out posts this evening
well beyond their normal period of cut off -inactivity which is a good
precedent.
However, these conditions may catch a few persons in the Nature isle off guard.
Nonetheless, it was great of the Barbados Government to have issued a Tropical
storm warning for Dominica. That's a tell tale sign of Regional Unity/
sensibility -though it seems that lot of the people there may not have
genuinely been aware of it since the Government of Dominica didn't expressly
issue the warning. From the look on the satellite pics -Perhaps a tropical
storm warning should have been issued for Martinique as well.
Now it seems that Erika's center of circulation is starting to look a lot more
well defined on the FWI Radar (mosaic). It appears to be situated just north of
Dominica (near Base Terre island of Guadeloupe) just waiting for the rest of
its heaviest thunderstorm convection to 'catch up.'
Be careful all and God Bless especially all the affected islands tonight!

Finally NHC made the declaration that everyone had suspected.
To all in the Leewards I'm crossing my fingers that Erika veers away
from you.
I do wonder why she wasn't named a tropical depression before a tropical
storm? Do these systems skip stages or sometimes move so rapidly?
Erika seems to be absorbing a lot of moisture as the weather in T&T
today was extremely hot. The trend continues tonight and it's very still.
Trinidad has always been lucky at this time of the year, perhaps we need
to send some of our good luck up the island chain tonight. If only it
were that easy.
To anyone who might be close to or in Erika's path, please take care and
be safe.
Regards,
Lisa.

I've been a Restaurant Manager for most of my adult life both here and in Europe. I noticed that on the very rare occasions when we got something wrong....MAN!!! There would be a thousand people just waiting to tell me about it.
What about the 98.15% of the times when we get things right? Do people ever say "thanks, well done!"
From my stats, 0.82% of people will ever do that. Weather permitting, I hope will these stats
will improve over time.(for the sake of our children)
Weather prediction and forecasting is by no means an exact science, and in my opinion, won't be for a while.
To Gert, Dave and others at Stormcarib,
Your path and computer predictions for former Hurricane Bill were SPOT ON!

Hurricane Bill seems to be following the path projected by the experts, and the super computers. That is to say, Bill is going to miss us all, turn and fizzle out somewhere into the cold North Atlantic.
TnT, we're in the clear for now.
If Bill were to take a wrong turn however, everyone from the United States, right down to South America:
1.Do you have drinking water and canned (or dried,or salted) food in stock? 2.Have you pre-located a "safe room" in your home or safe area in your neighborhood?
We Trinidadians and tobagonians, regardless of religion, always, always, always pray, to the same Creator.
Let us pray, For Hurricane Bill to leave us ALL alone.

Greetings and God's blessings.
Here we go again hemisphere! The Hurricane season is once again upon us.
By using the computer models and predictions on this excellent website, even an amateur like myself can breathe a (temporary) sigh of relief. Nevertheless Trinis, remember to stock up on items like: drinking water, canned food, torch lights and batteries, candles and matches, portable radios - for local weather updates and so on. Oh and extra underpants - I know I'll need them if a storm does hit us. My three year old son Christian also says that everyone should stock up on helicopters for reasons I'm certain he understands.
So we're all fine here in the lovely old town of Couva, and I don't have to water my back yard vegetable garden (commonly but not fondly referred to by our gardener as "Lorne's Cassava and Ocro Jungle".
To my
favorite Sister-in Law, Anne in Waterloo Ont, (a true humanitarian - It's people like you and ideals like yours that make good, strong and kind societies.) I'm sorry you have a storm and possible cat3 hurricane (Anna) almost named after you. According to Bart, I didn't do it, I wasn't anywhere near it, you can't prove a thing, so don't kick my butt when you come to visit next week!
Stay safe and happy everyone. Lorne.

There is a southerly cloud build up that appeared out of the blue.It location puts it very close to Tobago if it continues westerly and then veers northwest as it reaches the islands.
I do hope that my eyes are deceiving me
Heavy showers started around 5:00 a.m and continued up until a short
while ago. Clouds are still looking heavy so it looks like this is just
a break until the next downpour soon.
Of course in T&T when there's lots of rain there's lots of traffic, more
than the usual Friday rush.
Once the wave passes us we can probably look forward to a clear weekend.
Hope everyone's having a great Friday. :-)
Take care and be safe.

We could have used some rain to cool down the heat and today was a
welcome relief. T&T got a soaking this morning but although it's
overcast there are signs that the skies are clearing up a bit.
While I wouldn't mind a shower or two later tonight, there are folks who
have had just about enough rain for one day.
Hope Trinis pay attention to the wet roads and avoid fatal accidents. We
have far too many as it is.
Take care everyone and be safe.

For anyone who's still awake I'm referring to the weather. :-D
Scattered showers are expected in T&T some time tonight but so far it's
just a continuation of the heat we had today.
I'm not seeing too many umbrellas out this week but Trinis probably have
them on standby. Haven't seen anyone wearing masks to guard against H1N1
either.
We're not in panic mode.....and that's a good thing.
It's turning out to be an uncomfortably hot night, I'm hoping
tomorrow's cooler.
Have a good night folks,
As always, be safe.

A huge hello to everyone at Stormcarib. Hope you all have been more than
fine during the months that I haven't been posting. I have kept up with
your updates from time to time. :-)
It's that time again but predictions anticipate a quieter season than
last year.
After endlessly hot and dry days in Trinidad we finally got some much
needed rain. South Trinidad is considerably cooler than it has been for
some time.
Gray skies above this afternoon but I don't think anyone's
complaining.....at least not yet. :-)
