Quiet gentle rain today, falling almost srtaight down Yet it's not a heavy gray day. I've gotten over an inch in the last three days.
Soggy for our visitors, but at least last weekend was sunny for all the beach goers.

- No Earthquakes!

Hello, all,
My dear brother just called my attention to the fact that the Virgin Islands region, US and BVI, have had zero earthquakes for a week now! We usually have dozens and as many as fifty every week. See:
I don't know if that's good or bad! Poor Chile, you cannot even count all the 5.plus quakes they've had since the big 8.8. See:
Mellow weather, a little haze, no rain, but big surf coming in, making for swishy diving in the surge. I am looking forward to June's calm seas!
Have a GREAT day!

Hi, everyone,
No news is good news?
Weather here has been rather dry, which is usual for this time of year. Very hazy today with volcano ash from Montserrat. And the beaches are all getting smacked again by very large surf from yet another American snowstorm's edges that have come all the way here.
A great sunny, breezy day to go to the first day of the three day Agricultural Fair, and to attend the Mardi Croix Parade on North Shore/Cane Bay area of St. Croix.
If you're quick, you can still see a satellite animation of the cloud of ash from Montserrat. Find it on www.weathercarib.com ...scroll down to where it says, Entire Tropical Atlantic & Caribbean, and click Atlantic IR satellite HIRES, then at the top of that view, find animate. (Choose your size, then click Most_Recent. If it's not on most recent, choose Every_Other)
Cheers,

Hello
Intermittent rain, unlike Puerto Rico that's had lots of rain for days now.
Haiti had another smaller, 4.5 earthquake this morning at about 9 am, as did Southern California having two at about the same time.
Here's something for the residents of St Croix,
The Hispano Unidos Organization and Caritas Felices are having a meeting this afternoon, Friday 1-15-10 at the baseball park between Goodyear and Napa. This meeting is at 5 to 8 pm to organize a Haiti relief effort which involves collecting donations (food, water and used tents) at different parts of the island (Stores and Supermarkets) this Saturday. We need volunteers to help us with transportation (Trucks) and manpower. If you are not familiar with this group, they do a tremendous amount of work for the community here on St. Croix. Please lend a hand/vehicle if you can, your help in this effort is greatly appreciated. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Melissa E. Keyes St. Croix, U.S.Virgin

Hello from the hills above LaVallee,
Crisp sunshine, a stiff breeze, and frothy seas this day.
I'm beginning to think this will be out winter weather this season, if those high pressures keep rolling through the Atlantic 'over our heads' like they are doing lately, now that winter has roared into the northern climes.
We shall see, hey?
Enjoy yourself,

To all our StormCarib friends in the Caribbean and to
those all over the world who kept track of us, I would like to extend my wishes
for a most wonderful and happiest of Christmases and all year end celebrations.
Thanks to some of the Tropical Storms we received some much needed rain. We were
truly blessed that we did not have to deal with any major hurricane. I
sympathize with those in the Pacific where they did not fare as well. I hope and
pray that their emergency needs have been met and everyone is trying to cope
with their losses, especially the painful loss of family members and friends. I
thank all those involved in keeping us informed as to the tracking of the
various systems. We can breathe easier now, however, I always remember that my
father looked back at hurricanes which struck in December. I must check the
archives to find out for myself. Or, maybe it goes too far back..? I'll soon
find out.
(See photo):The serene, beautiful view from our house
overlooking the bay, winter refuge to the Rose Way Schooner from Boston, is
a daily, soothing balm for the spirit. May we be equally blessed with another
quiet hurricane season in 2010; and may God bless us all now and in the New
Year!
Isabel

Dark clouds, thunder ... it's a stormy morning right now. Poor pups are
freaking out, they really hate the thunder. Last night I saw lightning, but no
thunder, and some really odd light ... beams breaking through the clouds
...
I must admit, it's nice to have cooler temps and comfy breezes ... just
another day in paradise!
Enjoy!

Absolutely wonderful weather lately. Well, to be watching the Sea, and perhaps to not be in or on it, there are some rather huge swells coming in, stirring up the sand for low 'vis' for diving or snorkelling, and a lumpy ride on a boat. But go if you have a chance, anyway! Just take care. Happy surfers. Nice to be having such a calm season.

Feels like liquid air this morning! Yesterday was bizarre, almost foggy it was so hazy. The sun disappeared at 5:30, just after I snapped this image. Not Sahara dust! .
. . And at 6:30, the sky turned pink for only a minute or two, to catch our Irish Cowboy playing in the sea with riders. The kid with his arms up fell in the water seconds after I clicked the shutter. .
. . Today is looking like another gorgeous day in Paradise. OK! Have fun when you can! We plan our work, but we don't plan our play. . .

- Innacurate Blog on Hurricane HUGO
|
- By "Isabel Cerni" <hicerni at viaccess.net>
- Date: Mon, 21 Sep 2009 11:39:00 -0400
|
Dear StormCarib friends:
Twenty years later, St. Croix is still being
inaccurately assessed and reported after Hurricane HUGO in 1989 when it
crawled over the island with winds gusting up to 200 mph and over, and
this for 12 long hours. Of course there was panic the next day at the sight of
the devastation and no communication with the outside world. Of course there
would be panic; that panic is not restricted to certain people. It is a natural
fear and can affect anyone even those we least expect. That short span of fear
did not warrant any troops. The looting was over long before they arrived. The
concern should have been for food and water, not troops.
After that first day, everyone helped each other to
pick up, to find food, to take care of everything that needs to be done. The
reporting outside of St. Croix was for the purpose of sensationalizing what was
a very catastrophic and very tragic event on an island that had not seen a
hurricane since 1928. It can happen to anyone, any place, any time.
The U.S. mainland has seen its share of
catastrophes and the looting that takes place. An island is an island. Its
people cannot drive over to another state for refuge or food. Trucks cannot
drive in, they have to be flown in..an island is an island, remember that.
Every place will have its burden to bear, will have
its Time in one way or another, but why do reporters have to live on the blood
of those who suffer? Why does a weather blog have to be so unfair as not to even
mention the horrendous power that stayed overnight on St. Croix? Totally
ignored!! All it could say is that it "brushed pass the Bahamas.." What about
us!! It stayed here for 12 long hours and all that could be mentioned was the
looting!?! Give us a break, man! Do the right thing and properly
investigate Hurricane Hugo on St. Croix.
We just saw a 20th anniversary documentary on
HUGO on St.Croix, all aspects of it, before, during, and after, with
various people giving detailed information on what took place throughout.
Hurricane HUGO was the greatest catastrophe in all of the United States
up until that time! Reporters, do your job fairly, for your sake, and those
about whom you are reporting. GOD is watching us--from a distance
(?)

Machete: it is a long, steel blade with a handle
used by locals to clear brush and green debris, opening paths, streets, it's
fast and an excellent method; has been used for centuries. Just in case you got
that wrong too.

Well, the Atlantic is awake. And is cranky! The new
system in the middle of the Atlantic is already being called GRACE with a
question mark, that was on the Weather Channel this evening. No doubt you have
all checked it out. It's moving WNW. It is very broad! If it develops it could
very well be a BIG one. Let's think no further; just keep an eye on it and
continue to live and enjoy the quiet we are having at the moment. God bless us
all.

- The Atlantic - A Sleeping Baby
|
- By "Isabel Cerni" <hicerni at viaccess.net>
- Date: Thu, 17 Sep 2009 23:33:36 -0400
|
A Good Night to all! Sh-h-h-h! You know what
happens when some babies awake. They get cranky! Let the baby sleep. And may
"the fat lady" never sing, the baby could wake up and there goes our quiet spell
in the Atlantic.
Today, there were many memories of HUGO in St.
Croix - 1989 - the longest night. Twenty years later some people are still
"picking up the pieces", many houses remain as HUGO left them - the owners
either took the insurance money and ran, or could not afford rebuilding having
no backup funds to spend in that venture.
St. Croix was on the wrong side of HUGO, the bad
side, for 12 long hours. LENNY came from the west, we were on the good side and
with equal amount of beating, we only had to straighten some plants and very
young trees, and do a little cleaning up around the yard. Both hurricanes were
BIG, but the difference between the wrong side and the "good" side, is quite a
difference!
HUGO arrived at 5:30 p.m. and devastated the whole
island from one end to another with its accompanying tornadoes. LENNY arrived at
noon and lasted well past midnight, I know, I lived through it, all by my
lonesome. Actually, my pets were with me. What a comfort animals are especially
in times of stress.
We hope and pray we never see another HUGO. We are
grateful, though, for the lessons learned from it. We are now far better
prepared ( except maybe boaters.?? ) for a hurricane than in
1989, however, being on the wrong side of any hurricane is the worse thing
that can happen to anyone. May that never repeat itself. God help us!
Isabel

Hello,
First off, please let me apologize for any rude remarks I may make. When writing about Hugo and the aftermath, I relived the trauma, and gossip. I am truly sorry for any errors on my part.
Today was strange in that the people I saw who usually just say "Hi" stopped to chat. Of course, the topic was weather.
Otherwise, today was an absolutely perfect Caribbean day, clear skies, light breeze, calm sea, and sharp outlines of the Islands to the North.
Take care, and enjoy yourself.
