Good Morning,   After a week of particularly hot, humid, no Trade Wind weather Culebra had a great soaker of a rain yesterday and last night.  It came down slow enough to soak well in (0.50 inches of rain) and relieve the heat and humidity also.  To show how calm and flat the seas have been, here is a photo taken yesterday from the City Pier area.

Enjoy,  William

- Rain on the roof
  • By M J <mjstark at coqui.net>
  • Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2010 07:28:25 -0400
Sometime in the night it rained. Or maybe it was sometime in the morning. I only know that I heard it start and the next thing I knew it was feed the cat and chickens time...which, if you happen to have insomniac traits, is almost as big a gift as the rain! I've had it suggested that I should get one of those sleep/white noise/rain sounds machines, but it could never mimic rain on the tin roof. Maybe a thousand cats dancing up there could do it too...but I just don't have the time to train them.

Have an excellent Saturday!

Why I don't get more papayas...

- A radar full of rain!
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2010 07:21:14 -0400
Yesterday afternoon was the teaser, a good shower just as we were starting a going away party, but it ended quickly, leaving its signature behind. Early this morning we got the real deal. Not that I heard it (see above about party).

The rain has stopped for now but thunder rumbles to the north and we hope for a return performance. I could have watered all night long and the plants wouldn't have responded so beautifully. Thanks, Universe!

We finally got a rain that lasted more than five minutes! I don't think it was much, but it was very unexpected (think, clothes on the line). I'm grateful.

This winter like weather, complete with Christmas like winds, has been such a wonderful thing this last week. I wake up each day hoping it will still be going on and so far, so good! Even if it does dry out the plants like crazy...

  • Date: Thu, 1 Apr 2010 05:09:13 -0700 (PDT)

Good Morning,  Attached please find rainfall data of the first three months for Culebra, PR.  It shows a bit below average rainfall for this period, with right at average for March.  Culebra is very dry now with above average temps and winds.  We wish all the islands more moisture soon.

Our seemingly annual at Easter time fires happened today and thankfully, the bomberos (firemen) took care of both of them in good time, with no damage done to any properties. But it is tinder dry around here and yes, we're nervous. The forecast doesn't hold any rain in sight, but let's hope for some anyway!

Good Morning,

More clear skies and warmer than normal weather in Culebra.  Last night the transit of the International Space Station was very bright in amongst the puffy clouds.

Good Morning,

Culebra has been overcast and cloudy for the last three days and for the past two days we have been having an almost steady drizzle of rain.  During last night it came down a bit more than a drizzle, perhaps and actual shower, with 0.5  (1/2) inch in the rain gauge.  At 6 AM it was 66 degrees, brrrr!

- Chances
  • By M J <mjstark at coqui.net>
  • Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2010 20:19:42 -0400
The forecast for tomorrow is 70% rain chances, which would be a huge relief, but I see nothing that really makes me think that is true. Of course, our forecast is for San Juan, and we're much closer to St. Thomas...maybe I should check their forecast (which is out of San Juan).

The last two mornings we've gotten sprinkles lasting minutes at most; I think it makes the plants more thirsty. It certainly makes me more longing for rain. Without it, one almost forgets, but to be teased...is almost cruel. My plants are not happy, even with long waterings. And it's only the beginning of March!!! Usually we don't start wishing for rain for a couple more months and then I'm afraid to wish that, just in case. So maybe it is early enough to wish for rain. I'll have to find some rain music and dance.

March first week 2008 (no, I still haven't gotten my camera back; soon come! I hope)

The forecast is clear. The rain in spits is the first in awhile. The radar shows weather moving almost directly from the south. And it's hot. I'll take this all to be an agreement of what I was talking about with a friend the other day...that these days, if you truly want to know the weather, look over your head.

Good Morning,

Culebra only received 0.30 inches of rain in February and things are very dry now.  We have been having high temp records set in San Juan, along with a few days of haze due to volcanic ash from Montserrat.
In a few weeks we will be having the first day of Spring and the sun is "marching" northward along the horizon,   Enjoy,  William

Finally, after a dry spell, we're getting some rain. Not a lot, but enough to perk up the plants and fill some cisterns a bit. The front is also breaking up the almost summer like heat we have been having. Except for nixing big beach plans for some, all in all it's a good thing!

  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Sun, 14 Feb 2010 04:09:38 -0800 (PST)

Good Morning,  Culebra had a brilliant, red sunrise this morning.  I assume the ash particles in the air have something to do with how red it is, we don't usually get this color of sunrise.  As far as I know Culebra received only a light dusting of ash at mid-morning yesterday.  I commiserate with the islands down south getting the heavy layer of ash, besides hard breathing, it will kill some of your plants.  Sure hope you get rain soon!

The attached photo shows our sunrise today, Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,

Culebra's January rainfall total was 3.10 inches.  Again this month we have more than the monthly average (2.5), and the island reflects this extra rain with the very green hills and tremendous growth in the trees and plants.

After a morning shower the other day, we had this great rainbow to enjoy.

The sound of rain on the roof let me find out our radar is finally back on line and a steady stream of rain bits are drifting up out of the southeast...maybe more rain, maybe not, who know? While I can't *see* the sun the sky has gotten a LOT brighter. Gusts of the Christmas winds sort continue from yesterday keeping the leaves shimmering and spilling rain drops.

Oh. The sun just came out. Might be time to start walkin' (since I can't fly).

Are they ever going to fix the radar that is 'down for maintenance' again? I will say it has been better this year but with fronts and weird weather, I'd like to see what is going on locally better than the sat shows! In other words, if I go to town to open the cart, am I going to turn around in rain and go home or stay awhile in overcast?

Boy, it is SO easy to whine about things I can do nothing about. And here comes the sun again!

- Sunny Day!
  • By M J <mjstark at coqui.net>
  • Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2010 18:37:00 -0400
Today was our first sunny all day day in quite a while. My yard is still spongy with moisture, and some plants, the hot peppers in particular, look a little over saturated as well. But a few days of *normal* should fix that. The island will be green, the mozzies will be ravenous. But that's why god invented OFF.

A dear member of our community left us last night after her fight to stay was lost. She was a light and Culebra is a bit more dim for her passing. So we all have to just try a little harder and give a little more, for Nydia. For Culebra.

Here is the latest update on the medical supplies that are being flown to Haiti from Culebra and Vieques. Thanks to ALL who worked so quickly to make this happen! We don't do quickly often, but we do it damn well when we need to!

"Dear MJ: I confirm receipt of the donations from Culebra. Very well done!" "A perusal of the donations shows that they will be very useful. Excellent packing job!!! Well done!!!!"

Everyone give yourselves a big pat on the back!!! I'll be posting when I hear about the arrival of the supplies in Haiti.

- Medical supplies flight for Vieques and Culebra
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 16 Jan 2010 09:20:02 -0400
SCHEDULE FOR DELIVERY OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 17TH, (SUBJECT TO FLIGHT PLANS TO BE APPROVED OR CHANGED BY AUTHORITIES IN HAITI):
This coming Sunday, I will accompany my friend and his co-pilot to Culebra and then to Vieques to collect MEDICAL SUPPLIES ONLY. From Vieques, we will depart to Haiti to deliver the supplies. The proposed schedule is as follows:
9:00 am - Departure from Isla Grande
9:20 am - Arrival at Culebra
10:05 am - Departure from Culebra
10:25 am - Arrival at Vieques
11:10 am - Departure from Vieques to Haiti
12:45 pm - Estimated Arrival at Haiti
We need your cooperation and coordination to make this schedule possible. You need to be at the airport ready to go at the stated time. PLEASE BE PUNCTUAL. We will do our best to be on-schedule as well, but weather and other considerations may be controlling. We need you to be there, sharp and ready to load, since it will be a long day of flying and we need to arrive in Haiti at a given schedule mandated by the authorities. Also, we want to be back in Puerto Rico at the end of the day, and any delays will hurt this schedule.
Here is what is needed and wanted from you:
  • We can carry a maximum of 300 pounds of supplies. We need you to give us an estimated weight of what you have or collect as the time and day approaches. I am not putting a quota on either island, we just need the 300 pounds to make the flight count. You need to be accurate, BUT please do not wait until Sunday to weight the items and give me the information. Also, do not worry if you do not have the amount of items needed to complete this weight, since we may be able to gather some items from San Juan. Our priority is Culebra and Vieques, BUT WE NEED ADVANCE NOTICE.
  • The items need to be neatly packaged to have them properly fit in the plane. We are NOT flying a cargo plane, but rather a private plane meant for passengers which will makeshift as a cargo plane for medical supplies. Neat boxes, not bigger than the kind of boxes used for Xerox type paper, will do. Perhaps a print shop like Adonai in Vieques can donate some, or Morales after they unload their goods. Boxes in bad conditions, and also irregular boxes or packages would limit the use of the space and make it more difficult to handle (at the airport and once in Haiti). When you weight the items also weight the packages. I am being specific for sake of safety. Please bear with me.
  • The packages need to be adequeately labeled and the items within the package should be of the same kind/type. For example, bandaids, gauzes and the like in a box, with Tylenol, Panadol and others packed together in separate box. Just use common sense and you will be OK.
  • If medical supplies do not account for the 300 pounds, we may take bottled water, not the 1 gallon bottles, but rather the individual bottles.
A final note - I have never done this kind of project before. I did help in the Katrina and Asia relief efforts, but mostly by raising funds (Ricky Martin Foundation) and coordinating for volunteers to travel to Louisiana (Scientology Volunteer Ministers). I state this, because I plan as best as I can, but I am pretty sure that some improvisation will be required at one point or another. Hence, do not dispair if we change this schedule, or the plans, or if we need to cancel the trip at any point.
We are doing what we can, and my personal philosophy in life is to make things go right, period. I appreciate your understanding, your support, but most importantly, your love and willingness to help.
With Love,
Santiago F. Lampón

but a roof over my head, plenty of food and water...everything needed that seems so simple to have. And everything thousands don't have in Haiti. We can't fix the world but we can do something that might ease the suffering a bit.

Today donations of supplies, clothes, etc will be received at the old gym across from Palmetto Guest House from 6 this morning until about 7 tonight. These items will then be sent to Haiti. Anything you can think of that YOU would want if your world (that didn't have much anyway) got ripped away from you can go in the box. I'm going to use a tupperware type box as I hope it can be reused once there and won't be as vulnerable to weather as cardboard.

- Looking for a boat
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 13 Jan 2010 08:21:04 -0400
A friend from here who captained his boat to Grenada after the hurricane full of supplies we gathered from Culebra and Vieques has offered to head to Haiti. He no longer has that boat though and his sailboat isn't suitable to make a working trip. Anyone in the islands who has a proper work boat (like an open fishing boat type, etc) who would either want to make the trip with Jack or loan him the boat for the trip can get in touch with me at caribemj at gmail dot com. The point of going personally is to make sure that donated items get where they need to go rather than not, which is obviously an issue in Haiti.

Thanks, for any help or suggestions.

- Overcast Skies
  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 8 Jan 2010 04:12:28 -0800 (PST)

Good Morning,  Culebra received 0.60 inches of rain yesterday.  That cold front swooping down from the North seems to have loosened up some moisture just for us.  This morning dawned with overcast skies, the sun trying to peak out.  The overcast has won the battle for now, as we are completely overcast with gray skies now.  Culebra remains "super green".

Enjoy,  William

  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 7 Jan 2010 20:28:04 -0400
Rain and rain and some more rain...started as a drizzle, grew to real rain and seemed to never quit until late in the afternoon. It is windy and chilly and damp right now, the ground saturated. A good day to stay home curled up in bed. With hot tea (preferably cocoa but I don't have any here, drat)

Too bad I didn't know that when I went to town today and opened the cart for five minutes...but yippee that I had an umbrella at the cart to walk around with after I closed down! How could I forget how cool the simple umbrella is??? Muddy feet but dry hair and shirt. Coffee and Bailey's at Mamacita's. A walk and ride home. A warm blanket and a good book. Beauty!

(sorry to you two tourist ladies from Canada I lied to about the rain usually not lasting all day...I didn't mean to - guess you won't be trusting me about tomorrow...I wouldn't either!)

We have a mini cruise ship and an eco-tour ship in our bay. Quite the contrasting vessels...At last the big one did NOT drag its anchor through the fragility of Culebrita and anchored instead in the bay, where damage is hopefully at a minimum. I'm sure I'll hear more about it as word filters in. We are having some beautiful weather and I hear the snorkling is excellent right now since the wind has laid down.

Good Morning,  Santa had a rough ride into Culebra last night with all the thunder, lightning, and heavy rain.  Culebra received 4.20 inches of rain between the hours of 11:30 PM - 3:30 AM.

Yesterday we had some Montserrat ash mixed into the sunrise for some brilliant colors.

Wish I had a video,  but if you are in the VI's or PR...just look outside!!! I'm listening to classical Spanish guitar music wafting over from across the bay after a nice night out with my good and close friends.

  • By M J <mjstark at coqui.net>
  • Date: Thu, 24 Dec 2009 07:17:15 -0400
The three boats at my little dock (2 Tortola dinghies and a Windrider tri) have been banging around all night and still are making clack clack music as I type. Last night it sounded like someone was messing with the boats (because in the dark it ALWAYS sounds like there is an extra person on my stage) so I took my trusty flashlight and went to chase the wind.

This morning the air is bathwater warm - I remember baths - with none of the coolness of other recent mornings. I was looking at email when this insanely orange sky caught my peripheral vision, drawing me outside to gape in wonder. Again.

While the satellite map shows us fairly free of Sahara dust, we were pretty hazed over yesterday with something! And now it looks like a direct line of weather from Central America to the Gulf of Mexico and us in the middle. I hope Santa has his foul weather gear packed on top!

Have a wonderful Christmas, regardless of your inclinations...it's the peace and the love baby.

- Rain shower moment
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 19 Dec 2009 07:31:35 -0400
With the rain chances at 70% this morning, we just got a mini shower...does that mean we're done now? The radar barely looks spotty, but it's that backward sort of weather, from the south east to the north west, so who knows what's lurking down there? Always strange to me to see it do that...

In the time it took to go out and snap a few shots, the sun is fully up and out now. The wavelets are making loud splashes hitting the shore, without much wind pushing them in any obvious way. Looks like another beautiful day in Paradox.

I don't know exactly HOW my post from days ago showed up again but wonderfully enough, the weather is about the same except even better with the lovely Christmas winds blowing (translate: lots less mosquitos, much more pleasant). The sun has gone down and it is dusk, just about time for the parranda to gather around Happy Landings before beginning the neighborhood trek. "It's a most wonderful time of the year"

This iguana was hoping to snag some flowers but instead did a major save of himself after almost crashing to the ground...took him a few minutes to regroup and climb down the tree the safe way. No flowers for him today! I win!

It's a beautiful day here, a few clouds but the temperture is awesome, the water blue(s), and the air getting fragrant with aromas of delicious food cooking How lucky we are on Culebra that everyone will have enough (and more than enough) to eat, a roof over their heads and the company of friends and family. How lucky I am!

Looking out to Culebrita...

Thanks to Gert and Dave for continuing to keep us in touch with the weather and each other for yet another season. And thanks to all those who send in their reports, giving us little word pictures of life on our neighboring islands. You make my life bigger!

Happy Thanksgiving from Culebra, a country of America ;)

  • Date: Tue, 1 Dec 2009 07:20:36 -0400
Good Morning, 16.2 inches of rain for November brought our yearly
total up closer to its norm. We now have 39.4 inches for 2009. It
has  been some time since we had that much rain in November here;
1987 we had 17.9 inches and 1999 with "Lenny" we had 12.4 inches.

The rainfall has brought out the green and flowers, like a second
spring this year, Enjoy, William

Good Afternoon, Culebra had this rather impressive water spout
pass over one of it's outer bays this afternoon.

We have had some on & off showers, just more food for the
mosquitoes. Enjoy, William

- They say yes, rain says no, we say stop and it says go go go
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 22 Nov 2009 16:57:48 -0400
After days of heavy unpredicted rain, we have a weekend of heavily predicted rain and no rain. Which is...just another weather SNAFU and totally expected round about these parts.

The garden was almost drowned anyway...now all the wood can dry out so doors and shutters can close properly. I think my clothes are molding in the closet, so this will be a nice chance for them to un-dampen. There is still water running off the hills around where I live, though in trickles rather than floods. The water is very very very slowly clearing up in the bay. I had one report today that there are jelly fish in the bay, so check before you go swimming out there! It's good to know because if my dinghy engine wasn't leaking fuel for an as yet unknown reason, I'd have been at Dakity taking a swim...

The mozzies are coming out in force, but it's strange. Ever since I've lived in the Caribbean I've always thought the mosquitoes are smaller and faster than those I grew up with in Florida. And others concur, the little devils ARE fast! This batch however, I've probably swatted 20 on my skin and a few in the air. I feel like Jackie the Giant Killer (and if some of these are relatives, sorry! you'll just have to come back again as a dolphin or something - I'm too scared of dengue to worry about you). Am I the only one noticing this, because it can't be that I'm getting any faster in my reflexes!

I love that where I'm housesitting, there is a mozzie zapper! Oh, how easily I am entertained...

Good Morning, More rain for Culebra last night, 2 inches in two
hours, creating more run-off and not much chance for the soil to
dry out yet.

The skies are trying to clear up this AM and we were able to enjoy
the view of the training ship "Westward" depart the harbour.

Good Morning, Since 1:30 this morning Culebra has received 9.60
inches of rain, at times coming faster than two inches an hour.
This makes for a tremendous amount of run-off as our soil is
already saturated. This run-off turns the bay an ugly brown.

More rain is indicated on the radar and also is predicted for a
couple of days. Hopefully some of that will just slip by out in
the sea.

Stay Safe, William

We've had pounding rains on and off all night, and are in the middle of another now. From the satellite pics it looks like this cell will move off to the northeast and then sound the all clear. Oh really??? Thunder is shaking the walls, lightning must be out there close because the thunder increases, but for some reason I'm not seeing it this go-round.

No need to water today! May all our little chores be taken care of so nicely this Monday.

- Flash Flood, High Surf advisories, big weather oh my!
  • By M J <mjstark at coqui.net>
  • Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 07:55:51 -0400
Last night I was reading when I noticed (and would have noticed before but I had the radio turned way up due to the Rolling Stones amp level of a house church up the street) I could hear the boats all banging together, very loudly. I went out with a flashlight and the water was churning, even though there was relatively no wind. Very strange. I climbed into the dinghy whose stern anchor dragged, re-set it and could barely climb out, due to the bouncing and jouncing and not wanting to pull myself close enough to bash the dock. It might have been hilarious to watch but it was a bit scary to do. Not for fear of the water, it's barely deep, but fear of pain if I fell either back into the boat or onto the dock. I really do NOT like pain!

This morning looks lovely but we are in for some strong weather later today, if the local forecast holds true (http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=JSJ&StateCode=PR&SafeCityName=Culebra ).

Hopefully the Veteran's Day parade will be over before it starts. Today is Veteran's Day for the US, honoring those who have served in the military. Regardless of our feelings about war, I think honoring those who sacrifice their lives - whether in time served or the ultimate sacrifice - deserve the respect and recognition of the country they serve. Thank you, Veterans!

- rain and rain and rain
  • By M J <mjstark at coqui.net>

The rain came down! In buckets with cats and dogs and a few other critters along for the wild ride. Now it sits puddled in the yard, amazing as it's been so dry. The plants are all reaching for the sky, finally saturated with the best water possible.

The dinghy is full, again (yesterday's showers had it over ankle deep before I got to bailing). Good exercise! Now I watch the sat loops as the weather swoops from the Gulf over Cuba, over Jamaica, over Haiti and the DR right to our door before making another northeasterly swoop up up up into the central Atlantic. So huge, and us so small, it almost seems ridiculous to think this could change my day. Mine and...thousands more from miles upon miles away in so many directions.

Weather. It's a wonder. Thoughts and sorrow for those in El Salvador, where over 100 have lost their lives due to mudslides and flooding, apparently not specifically Ida related but more, a collision of systems. We know how easily this happens. Be well.

A very soggy Culebra morning.

  • By "William Kunke" <wkunke at verizonmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 9 Nov 2009 06:46:09 -0400
Good Morning, A rainy night and early morning brought Culebra
another 2.70 inches of rain. That combined with the 0.90 inches of
yesterday, bring us to 3.50 inches in a 48 hour period. The "dry"
creek bed is roaring like the Rio Grande this morning. We now have
broken clouds, (see attached photo), but the NWS predicts more
before days end. This may help the lime crop, as they have been
struggling along, very tiny and dry.

Enjoy, William

Good Afternoon, This morning the LO had me mount a new rain gauge

entrance. We really needed the rain and really enjoyed the
rainbow. William

While Ida makes a strengthening exit north (supposedly NW but the W part seems a bit iffy) toward one of the very beautiful (and infastructurally fragile) areas of Mexico, we're in a lull here. Still, and by mid-day beyond warm, the thoughts of the cool, clear waters of our beaches keeps me going. That crisp autumn-like weather was a teaser of days and nights to come. I'll put the long sleeved shirts away now...

Today is clear after two days of rain squalls and beautifully strange skies. All the high surf and dangerous swimming conditions alerts seem to be gone with the clouds. The full moon was awesome this morning (last night it was dancing in cloud cover)...this is a bit fuzzy, but so was I.

Good Morning, This morning we got some rain from the remnants of
that cold front to our North. Hopefully this portends more
moisture for the remaining two months of the year. For October
Culebra received 3.2 inches of rain, far below our average of 6.5
inches. Our year to date total is only 23.2 inches. NWS has
announced that this October was the warmest on record for San Juan
and vicinity.

So, dry & clear days have prevailed, we can sure appreciate the
views, Enjoy, William

We have been having steady weather with a few rain white outs along the way. All the puffs on the radars keep going poof <knocking on wood> and little by little we seem to be easing into cooler weather. Those crisp mornings we were having seem to have taken a hike for awhile but I can still turn the fans off in the wee hours.

Are you getting your costumes ready?? Are you already wearing it?

Waiting for season to begin again, I'm making the most of the quiet time and keeping my head above water...warm, glorious water, by the way!

- Ash, No Smoke
  • By "William Kunke" <wkunke at verizonmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 23 Oct 2009 10:39:08 -0400
Good Morning, Culebra woke up to some blue haze coming over the
hills. It is the result of a wind shift last night bringing the
recent Montserrat activity up our way. In the attached sunrise
photo you can see the bluish tint this morning.

As mentioned by St Thomas, PR had a fuel tank storage area catch
fire last night about 1 AM and the fires are still going. They
have shut down one of the regional airports in the are (Isla
Grande), also shutting down all the schools in the area. Louis
Marin International Airport remains in operation. The NWS had this
comment this AM;

.DISCUSSION...THE CAPECO/GULF TANK FARM EXPLOSION AND FIRE IN
SOUTHERN CATANO HAS DOMINATED THE WEATHER FOCUS THIS SHIFT. WINDS
ARE SOUTHEAST AT LOWER LEVELS DUE TO THE HIGH PRESSURE AND NEARLY
CALM AT THE SURFACE. THIS SITUATION WILL CONTINUE UNTIL SEA BREEZE
INFLUENCES CAN OVERCOME THE GENERAL FLOW AND FORCE SOME OF THE
SMOKE PLUME BACK INTO NORTH CENTRAL PUERTO RICO. TIMING...
DURATION AND WIND SPEEDS OF THE SHIFT FROM THE GENERAL FLOW TO
THE SEA BREEZE CONDITIONS ARE UNCERTAIN AND WINDS MAY VACILLATE
BETWEEN THE TWO CONDITIONS DURING THE DAY AS THE GENERAL FLOW
FIGHTS THE INFLUENCE OF THE SEA BREEZE. WINDS WILL CARRY THE PLUME
OUT TO SEA AT LEVELS ABOVE ABOUT 3 TO 5 THOUSAND FEET...BUT DUE TO
UNSTABLE CONDITIONS SMOKE MAY RISE TO ABOVE 15 THOUSAND FEET FROM
TIME TO TIME DURING THE DAY. SMOKE SHOULD DISPERSE WIDELY AFTER
ABOUT 10 AM AST. SCATTERED SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED BUT SHOULD BE
CONFINED TO NORTHWEST PUERTO RICO TODAY. ISOLATED SHOWERS ARE
EXPECTED ELSEWHERE. THE NORMAL DIURNAL SHOWER PATTERN WILL
CONTINUE THROUGH TUESDAY. AFTER THE UPPER LEVEL LOW MOVES PAST
PUERTO RICO MODELS INDICATE BETTER MOISTURE OVER THE AREA AND
BETTER DYNAMICS SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASED PRECIPITATION
WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.

Hope this helps with the info and we especially hope that no one is
injured fighting this blaze.

Time to check my coffee cup there Tommiegirl, Enjoy, William

Good Morning, First off, Welcome Back TommieGirl in Dominica, glad
to hear you are back safe and healthy. We missed your postings and
checking the glass levels.

Yesterday was very hot to start off here and then we got a late
afternoon rain from somewhere, 0.30 inches of rain and that really
cooled things off for the evening and this AM. A early visit to
the salt pond showed our resident Freddy the Flamingo enjoying the
fresh water and showing off a bit too.

Just when it seemed like it was getting parched again here, we had some nice showers yesterday to revive our wilting everything. This morning dawned cool and bright and I still haven't turned the fans back on. Fall in the tropics, unlike a lot of things around here, is a subtle and sometimes hidden gift well worth looking for.

81 degrees, a whisper of breeze, the sun under clouds. Perfect to me! We've had enough rain that only a additional dousing of watering is needed for the gardens...that magic rain water doing 10 times as much as the same amount of out of the hose water (city water here, not cistern).

Rain chances are high for today but the radar shows only blips and dabs, so we'll see. Sometimes that means what it looks like and other times drenching comes along. Hopefully Dinghy Dock will get its new roof over the bar up soon, to shield us all from the sun and the rain. In the meantime, it's sort of festive under the tents!

Happy Friday.

Even though I can't work right now, I'm enjoying this beyond thoughts of financial gain (and that's saying a lot, especially sober!). Hope a few others are catching the relief.

Here is the updated rainfall info for Culebra. With September so
unusually dry, our year total is only 20 inches so far. After a

This report is late as I was wandering the Florida coast enjoying

I knew I shouldn't have tempted the fates with the post below...but at least Grace has the courtesy of gracefully forming far away and headed even farther away. 91L however, we'll keep an eye on.

- It rains it shines

We've gotten some very welcome rain showers, a sort of blessed surprise alternative to the heat we've had that is breath sapping (everyone who does the hug kiss hello apologizes for sweat face...um, that would be mutual slick city cheeks...though I hate to advertise my humanity, I also glow).

It looks like more rain is supposed to be coming along, but it will or it won't; we're a fluke here. In the midst of that is the glorious now not quite full but still awe full moon. Hope you've gone outside to see it; for some reason it seems brighter than ever...and the tides are high.

Enjoy! All the fun and none of the...(shhh)

I checked to see if Montserrat had blown but no...or, it didn't say anything. Because I'm housesitting and can't upload a photo, you'll just have to trust me that it is so *hazy* I can't see Vieques from here, the hills are covered in haze...very odd. Anyone know what's going on?

- 99
  • By MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2009 07:48:22 -0400
Once again we hit 99 on the invest list and the chances of it developing have gone up this morning. But hopefully it will stay in its own section of the world, which would be far east and then north of all of us.

I'm enjoying these cool mornings, even as they turn into hot days. Yesterday didn't seem as hot, but then, I stayed in the shady zone most of the day.

Have an excellent Friday!

- Everywhere but here?

Yesterday it looked (in the sky and on the radar) like we'd not have much, if any, rain, but around 11 a.m. the sky went black and lightning and thunder were getting a wee bit too close to the cart for comfort. I closed down and then re-opened a half an hour later in a drizzly rain. The air was cooler, the overcast kept it from being a steam bath and the rain stopped. Eventually the sun came back out and stayed out for the rest of the day, cooling off into a very comfortable evening.

Today looks a lot the same!

- A little rain must fall

But not much! Keeping an eye on invest 98, which hopefully will follow its intended path north, while the sun shines bright and beautiful here. The night air had enough coolness to turn off the fans for the second night in a row. Maybe it is staying on the hill (house sitting) or maybe the air is really cooler. I'm going for the really cooler factor. Even the sky looks more crisp.

Happy Rosh Hashona!

Just got the update about a possible Fred reprisal. But what caught my eye even more was this loop. The system to the south of us but sliding up the island chain, with a strange sort of penumbra above it...check it out.

- Birds are singing Saturday
  • From: MJ <caribemj at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 12 Sep 2009 07:19:47 -0400
Chirping, squeaking, screaming...I'm hearing everything but crowing and that is really nice (but really weird) as the sun starts to heat up the day quickly. At dawn it felt like a breath of a fall morning, now we're back to normal. With no breeze, maybe a few drabs of rain ahead. Maybe not. A good day for being in shady places or cool water...or both.

Have a lovely Saturday!
