- drought ends with a splash
  • From: eli fuller <elifuller at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 11:56:17 -0700 (PDT)
After being in the worst drought in years we have finally come out of it with a splash. Today it has been cats and dogs on and off all day. As photo shows right now we are still getting it. The island went from being a dry dusty brown patch to a brillian green within a few days. I think we can get back to being sunny now. We were lucky to have had such a nice weekend and start of the week. Hope tomorrow is nice as i have a sailing trip!

We had a few showers last night and again this morning. Still a lot more rainfall needed to ease the drought, but at least the vegetation is responding and we are seeing some greenery again.

Sailing from St. Barts to Antigua after the West Indies Regatta wasn't that much fun yesterday and last night. We had squalls from about 8 PM in the 30 knot range. Man it was wet! Glad we had reefed the big main and even more glad to be home now. Looks like it will kinda stick around for the next couple of days. I would sit back and relax for a few if you are in port and don't have to move.

- WARMING!!

I have just opened one of my shutters upstairs as its getting warmer! But the wind is funny..nothing , then a sudden gust which again messes up my filing system and sadly has broken my 2nd lamp. Sarah Fuller our local potter made them for some idiot who didn't want them and they are or were so beautiful I decorated my living room around them, well..sort of!  James pieced the first one together in a couple of days and I touched it up. BINGO! lamp back.  This one seems to be giving him a harder time but I think he may succeed .  We now have 4 birds in the house on a regular basis though unlike some of our bloggers I'm not exactly familiar with bird faces and haven't named them yet, though Im sure Ill get there. Its still very dry and dusty though we did have rain for a couple of nights. The island looks awful especially on the west coast ..miles of brown hills. I know I've seen this many times but it never ceases to amaze and upset me. Classic week this weekend , I hope that the winds are fair, behaviour is good  and all events are without incident. Unhappy that dogs are not always welcome in and around retaurants and bars  in English Harbour ( used to be) so Max will have to stay home. Off to listen to some music , and do some more painting. Jan

One day it was doors closed and blankets and the next...can I be perspiring??? Im quite happy that the wind has died down 25 to 30 knot gusts every 30 minutes doesn't make for a calm life or a good sleep, banging doors and papers flying around made filing a challenge, but rain would be nice. Just wait!!! I know when it does rain it will  demolish our new road. YES we do have one thanks to general elections. I'm trying to start a garden .just palm trees at the moment, very small ones, but with no government water and no rain they probably won't survive . Max our dog is sleeping on the floor as the bed is too hot, and the tiny ants are back in the kitchen looking for water.  Ill be looking for water soon via Jim Daddy the island's water vendor as I see trucks on our hill already. One government promise was water soon!!!

Everyone on the north and west coasts of Antigua and around the caribbean should be warned that there is a huge ground swell coming our way in a few days. IT's gonna be good surfing but could be extremely dangerous for boats and properties not expexting it.

We are still overcast today though no rain its so nice to have warmer weather for the last couple of days. we can open up our house and enjoy the soft breezes . Its been about a month since we could eat outside. Instead of wearing sweaters and eating off our laps we can relax and watch the lights at night and the changing view of the sky and the sea. The birds are back in our living room so the bananas in the bowl need to be covered again. We really don't need to complain ,as at least we don't have to wear fur hats and earmuffs as do the inauguration guests and visitors today in Washington DC ..even in our hurricane season!!   Don't mean to make light of the weather as its a very important part of our lives from the beginning of summer until the beginning of winter. Im trying to save enough money to buy house insurance for the coming season, not that Im being a pessimist. We are due for elections soon here in Antigua, but I don't think we are looking for drastic changes :just a government that can deal with the economic downturn that the Caribbean is going to feel with a vengeance shortly.  Id be interested to hear from sailors this winter on this blog on how the weather is . I know from when I cooked on a 50 ft charter boat,  bad winter weather had an effect on our livelihood. Strong winds and high seas are not much fun for weekend sailors or charter guests. OR COOKS!!!!  I can remember taking 4 rather overweight men ashore {or trying} on a beach in Barbuda near Coco Point in a rubber dingy on my own on a very rough windy evening. I jumped out into the surf  held the boat and urged them to get out which they were so slow in doing that the boat threw them in the water. Spoilt their evening!!! Im adding the sunset view from our veranda, or at least my idea of it, Jan

After a pretty wet and windy christmas the weather seems to be improving for the new year. We still have  some unhappy campers trying to build their houses  in the middle of mud and serious run off on our left and on our right and below us.  My daughter, here for a christmas TAN!!! went back as white as she came.  A one day art show was sabotaged by rain on boxing day but christmas day at the beach was fun ,though no-one went swimming as the waves were huge. NOTHING will stop christmas!! The dog is as usual muddy but fine. My husband caught a tourist cold so spent most of the holiday in bed.  Wishing everyone a prosperous  and happy new year despite the economic climate and hoping that the regular climate[ie. hurricanes] leaves us alone again and does'nt revisit the islands that were hit last year. Attaching a painting that to me is the best of the Caribbean. Jan

The Christmas weekend brought some strong brisk winds.
At times I had a flashback to the beginnings of a few past storms but they remain fairly steady with an occasional gust. I did visit some friends who live on a hill and oh boy it was almost TS force up there wow.

Have a Happy New Year 2009 when it rolls in.

  • From: Allan D <top_shatta_ad2002 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 22:41:49 -0500
It looks as if Paloma will pass between the two Caymans after scraping pass Grand island an hour ago. A friend of mine spoke to me earlier on his shortwave set. He reported very strong wind up to 98 mph gusts with possibly stronger winds elsewhere on the island(he's somewhere in the Bodden area), there's also heavy rain in sheets(~3.67 in. since 6 p.m.). He's not able to gauge the sea condition due to poor visibility. As from the Cuban doppler radar attached, you can see the eye(marked) pass just to the east of Grand Cayman. The strongest of Paloma remains offshore of Grand Cayman however. Jamaican radar also show rainbands approaching from the west of the island.

Someone must be watching over me!  Our road had just become passable for any car high enough to miss the potholes and combined with a ferry service operated by my stepson, managed to have 20 ladies for a Women's Club lunch on Tuesday. This was to acquaint everyone in these lean times that I am about to have a gallery studio here in Buckley's. By yesterday no-one would have turned up and I would have had food left for an army.!! I don't know how much rain fell in Antigua on Tuesday night and Wednesday but schools and businesses closed along with roads. We didn't have a lot of rain yesterday on our hill but I could see it all around us and it was dark enough to have lights on most of the day. This is the second near miss as the last large gathering at our house was our wedding  which was bright sunny and quiet! The following morning at 7.am a bacco started clearing ground 30 feet from our veranda. I hope that the roads are better today. My husband tried to shop yesterday and both supermarkets we use were inaccessible due to flooded car parks.  Heres to a dry Antigua!! Jan

The bad weather  warning  expected to end by  6 p.m.  Has been extended  ... Here on the  Atlantic coast we just got  a heavy down pour.  There are discussions on the radio  on schools possibly being closed tomorrow but the MET OFFICE says  the weather should pass  by tomorrow.  Meanwhile, due to Antigua being  "water logged"  there  could be serious flooding so precautions are being taken  in low lying areas and  storm shelters have been opened in some areas.    Just spoke to someone who lives near the airport and  it took them 2 hours to get home due to roads being flooded!  RAIN RAIN GO AWAY!!   We don't say that often in  Antigua!

Due to a trough, we just got inches of rain dumped on us once again. Some places looked worse than when OMAR passed a few weeks back.

The Met Office here issued a Flash Flod Warning and warned residents living in low lying areas to take precautionary measures against flooding.

At around 1PM, there were several main roadways blocked which caused significant traffic. Schools were closed early as were some business places in St.Johns.

OK.. I know baby hummingbirds are  not HURRICANE RELATED... But have had  some who have asked about the  baby hummers  who  were born during  HURRICANE OMAR  --(see my previous posting -  the morning after)

These photos attached were taken early this morning with them both  begging for  their  nectar!  I  THINK MAMA is  around .. As I saw a hummer in the area but have not witnessed her  FEEDING THEM YET  so must watch this carefully in the hope she  survived the storm.  Not easy to  try to feed baby hummers so hope I don't have to take that on  Will let you know if  mama comes back (  possibly with a photo of her  feeding them)!

- BEAUTIFUL DAY
  • From: jan farara <janfarara at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2008 12:48:13 +0000
What a beautiful day!!! Apart from "a mashed" up road we are all in one piece especially the house. I spent some of Wednesday night under the sheets trying to block out the light and sound effects until new leaks got me out of a wet bed. Yesterday was cleanup day and 16 hours without power, not bad actually After Louis it was 3 months. Internet was playing up with generator power ,but I thought that this space was best left to the serious bloggers who connect to all the weather sites. Hurricanes freak me out I'm afraid, during Louis I spent the night pacing and worrying and this was no different. My family thought I was mad to move everything inside and pack up all the cushions and photos into plastic bags. I learned from experience ,as before Louise I piled all my paintings sans plastic into the shower and inadvertently gave them all a bath as the water came horizontally through closed louvers. I have heard that there has been a lot of flooding but as our road is so bad haven't been to look. Our new next door neighbor who has only just finished building the ground floor of his new house and has been here for 3 weeks overseeing the processor understands a little more why our roads are so bad as he has seen them disintegrate in a few days. My heart goes out to everyone on all the islands who have suffered damage as I remember the aftermath of Hugo and Louis both to persons and the economy. Congrats on new Fuller baby. Jan

  • Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2008 07:02:26 -0400
It is much nicer  waking up  this morning  than yesterday when we  were in the  thick of  HURRICANE OMAR...   And even during the night just a few hours after the blow,  the  wonderful Caribbean tree frogs were all singing as usual and  life goes on!

Antigua had big time flooding and schools still closed today...  But my  ELECTRICITY IS BACK ON!  That was  quick work by our power guys!

And doing a walk around  in my garden to survey the damage I was  delighted to find  that my  Hummingbird nest  I have been watching  HAD TWO NEWLY  HATCHED BABIES (see photos)...

SO the FULLER FAMILY had their  "hurricane baby" and I have my  "hurricane birds"!  Have not  actually  SEEN MAMA BIRD so  just hope she  survived the  storm but I feel she must have done to have protected these fragile babies.  You will note  the branches are  all BROKEN SUPPORTIING THE  NEST but  yet the nest  remained!  Nature is FULL OF  MIRCLES!  All in all  Antigua was  lucky as  we  did not get  devastating  wind damage.  Let's hope  it is over  for this  season.   Thanks again to all for concern.

when I made my last report it was before dawn and we were in the middle of the
worst. I had just come back from a drive around jolly harbor and all was ok. an
hour later something happened and the ''levy broke'' somewhere in the hills
that drain into this development and former drainage swamp. I left my rented
villa to go and check on my powerboats (the sloop was fine) and could see the
waters coming over the roads. it was 3 hours before I could get back to the
north finger of jolly. in that time I saw 2 suvs, two helicopters, a few boats
all sorts of debris and a huge pig all get washed into the drink (marina). many
villas along the golf course road were totally flooded as were cars and carts
throughout. three major torrents of fast moving water cut off the north side
from everywhere else. I have some crazy video footage and if and when we get
power back... I will put em on u-tube. jolly harbor without power is weird. we
were very lucky nobody was killed. and as soon as the waters let me get back to
my girlfriend we were able to go to the clinic to see my brother new hurricane
baby... Alexander Fuller. what a ..... great day to be alive.
Good job ali and julia!

When I didnt think it couldn't rain any more it did. WOW we are seriously flooded here in Antigua.

There are unofficial reports of people being rescued/evacuated in the Pigotts area. Runaway Bay residents have been cutoff and the water is at 3 feet in some areas. The Paynters area behind the stadium is literally a lake.

I have a attached a few pictures of my property and the Fryes Hill Rd by WOODS to give you some idea.

Antigua was witness to an amazing show during the early morning hours. Lightning was almost continuous, with thunder in the background.

Winds are from the SW at about 30 KT with gusts to 45 KT.

Almost continuous rainfall, with some very heavy squalls.

Electricity is off in the North of the island. Probably as a result of a lightning strike.

i have never seen or heard of any lightning storm like this, and i went to university in florida. This is totally crazy. It's like being in a rave disco with constant flashing. I would say that there is lightning every second or more. From the looks of things on the radar and on sat maps there is a band that is just cruising from south to north right over us. The east of the island doesn't even look like its getting the full brunt of this band, but let me tell you.... Jolly Harbour and most of the rest of the island is. Rain is in sheets. Boats look fine in the harbour, but the tide is about a foot higher than normal. more later.

- OMAR PLOWING THROUGH
  • From: Allan D <top_shatta_ad2002 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2008 02:44:28 -0400
TIME 3:15 AM EST, 16 Oct-2008:
Haven't been able to get much observations since an hour ago, seems like everyone's pretty much hunkered down. Omar has been strengthening steadily through-out the night and early morning and is now at 122 mph(1-min average) which makes it a modest category 3 hurricane. It's currently moving through the BVI/Leeward Island passage pass its closest point to St. Martin and then Anguilla. Last report coming from an associate in Virgin Gorda at 2:25 am EST indicate a sustained wind of 35 mph with higher gusts coming from the NE and the west side beach's got 2-3 ft swells rolling in, much calmer than the east side. Lime Tree Bay(St. Croix) still reporting tropical storm wind conditions and moderate rainshowers. Grand Case, St. Martin reported a gust of 48 mph at around 1:46 am EST but there's been no data available since. Satellite presentation on IR remained good with a large canopy. A strong convective mass is situated just west of the Northern Leeward Islands.

- STRONG WINDS AFFECTING ST.CROIX & USVI
  • From: Allan D <top_shatta_ad2002 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2008 23:59:14 -0400
Station 9751364 at Christiansted Harbour, St. Croix just reported sustained winds(NNE) of 51 mph with a gust to 67 mph at 12:06 am EST. There's also an unconfirmed report from Cruz Bay, St. John of sustained wind at 38 mph with gusts to 56 mph. HR composite radar shows that the strongest hurricane winds(at least 90 mph) remains just offshore of St. Croix to the east. From this point on, the eye of CAT3 Omar will begin to move away from St. Croix but strong winds(possibly the highest is yet to blow onshore) will continue to affect the island for another 3 hours or so. Meanwhile, conditions across Anguilla, St. Martin/St. Maarten and the rest of the Northern Leeward Islands will continue to deteriorate. The eye of Omar is expected to pass just west of Anguilla at around 3:30 am EST. It should be noted that the strongest sustained hurricane force winds of Omar(100-120 mph) is located on the east and southeast side of the eye which means islands such as Anguilla and St. Maarten will take the full brunt of this storm.

- TS CONDITION TO AFFECT SABA, ST. EUST & ST. MAARTEN SHORTLY...

11:20 pm hurricane hunter aircraft data continues to show a band of strong thunderstorms moving towards the St. Maarten/St. Martin-Saba-St. Eustatius region. These thunderstorms contains very heavy rainfall as well as strong gusty winds up to 50 mph. As Omar continues on its NE path, TS conditions will start to affect these islands followed by Anguilla, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Barthelemy and Antigua & Barbuda. Frigate Bay of St. Kitts just reported a gust to 36 mph(SE) along with rainshowers and thunderstorms. Conditions in Antigua remains relatively calm in terms of wind conditions, but there's been unending rainstorms and lightning since 9:00 pm. Hope everyone is fine on the other islands affected by Omar.

- OMAR APPROACHING USVI/BVI...FAST!!!
  • From: Allan D <top_shatta_ad2002 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2008 22:04:59 -0400
At 10:00 pm EST, San Juan doppler radar and data from two off-shore NOAA bouys indicate that tropical storm conditions are beginning to spread over St. Croix and approaching the US Virgin Islands. Bouy #41140 reported large waves up to 7ft above normal are impacting the SE and ESE shoreline of St. Croix, in addition onshore station LTBV3 reported sustained winds of 37 mph gusting to 50 mph from the NE at 10:05 pm EST, since then the wind continues to pick up gradually. However, it looks like the strongest winds located in the compact eyewall of Omar will remain just offshore of St. Croix as the hurricane passes to the SSE and E but portions of the BVI and Northern Leeward Islands may not fare so well as the 15 NM eye may actually passes directly over some of the islands and cays. In the path of this potential danger includes, Dog Island, Anguilla Island and Sombrero Island(BVI).

The sky just went crazy at 17:50 local, 30 mph gusts, torrential rainfall, lightning turning the night sky into day and the thunder claps that follow. Power immediately went off at Lower Fort Road. Had to inch myself trough the rain to get to McKinnons, which fortunately still has power so far.
Looking at the Martinique radar, you can see the long band coming in.

It is still raining and I am hearing thunder at 18:27.. This could be a long night..

There is absolutely no need to panic anywhere in our family of islands. We’ve been through many storms much worse than Omar. Omar is a puppy compared to Hugo or Luis or George.

Well after not having anything at all for the day we just had our first rain in Jolly Harbour and it was a good one. I estimate 25-30 knots with heavy rain and lightning. Action! Gone calm again now though. Amazing how choppy it can get in here in such a short time. Glad all the extra lines are on the boats. the first image is of the cloud coming into jolly and the second image shows the rainfall on the radar.

At the moment it is gray and overcast. I took a quick drive down to Fort James beach, the Caribbean Sea is as calm as a bathtub. It has an eerie look took it along with the horizon.

We have not had any rain on this northern side for most of the day and some of the mud puddles are acually drying up.

If the predicted track goes as expected OMAR will pass 193 miles away, with storm winds out 115 miles, not sure how much of this we will get but as these things go you just never know. Some of the supermarkets are packed with shoppers as is one gas station that I passed on the way home.

Other than that, I wish all our friends in the closer affected islands a safe night while OMAR makes his way through.

before the storm? It's nice and calm with little or no swell. In Jolly Harbour it's been dry since the middle of the night when we had some thunderstorms pass through. Windguru is still saying we will have over 30 knots of wind early tomorrow morning which is good windsurfing weather. The problem is the rain. A friend and i will be out there trying to windsurf somewhere where there are a few waves probably between Johnson's Point and Jolly Harbour if the wind and waves are to come from the south as forecast. I don't mind storms coming this close, but i am sure that there will be some problems for people who don't do any prep work for this storm. People should still get their boats properly secured. I imagine there will be some beach erosion over by OJ's as well. Such a shame he put in the "breakwater". With the eye about 200 miles to our North it will be close enough to keep us on our toes. Radar shows very little rain in the area at the moment. I'm sure this will change. www.weathercarib.com has a link to the martinique radar which shows the eastern caribbean.

Up early this morning now with  eyes WIDE OPEN.. This  weather developed  fast...  And is coming at us  FROM THE  WRONG WAY as LENNY DID in  1999 !!  . We have a hurricane on our doorstep....    Just  since I  came home from having fun in the  big apple  this  monster has developed and  certainly has the  attention of all of us in the northern leeward islands...

On the present path  Antigua is  just outside of  hurricane winds with the closest point  of the  eye  expected to pass  178 miles from us  in  27  hours  or  early tomorrow  (WEDNESDAY MORNING)  -

However  just spoke to our  met office and   they  say  THERE COULD BE A SHIFT to the SOUTH and we would  be in the  more  direct path so we  must  pay close  attention for the next advisory this morning.

Will certainly do  a review of my hurricane check list  over the next hours.

  • Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2008 23:56:00 -0400
With the uncertainties in the path of Omar and the expected expnsion in it's corresponding wind-field, a Tropical Storm warning has been issued for Antigua & Barbuda as well as Montserrat. Hurricane warnings have also been issued for St. Kitt & Nevis, St. Bart, St. Eust, Saba....
Based on the latest fixes and reports from the recon missions, most of the winds extends south-east of the center which is where the Leeward Islands are located when the center pass through taking the brunt of the storm. One piece of good news is, unlike Lenny, since the hurricane will be accelerating NE-wards, significant deviations are not as likely, hence the actually track may be pretty close to those of the forecast models...then of course, the 'unexpected' can always happen so BE PREPARED!!!

THE INITIAL MOTION ESTIMATE IS NOW 060/06. THE THREE RECON FIXES

THIS AFTERNOON SUGGEST THAT OMAR MAY BE FINALLY MAKING THE TURN TO

THE NORTHEAST THAT THE MODELS HAVE BEEN FORECASTING FOR THE PAST

SEVERAL CYCLES. ALL OF THE AVAILABLE MODEL GUIDANCE IS TIGHTLY

CLUSTERED ON A TRACK THROUGH THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS IN ABOUT

36 HOURS...WITH SIGNIFICANT ACCELERATION EXPECTED AFTER THAT AS

OMAR GETS LIFTED RAPIDLY NORTHEASTWARD AHEAD OF A DIGGING

MID-TROPOSPHERIC TROUGH THAT COVERS MOST OF THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN

ATLANTIC. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MODELS IS IN THE FORWARD

SPEED OF OMAR AFTER 24 HOURS. THE GFS...GFDL...AND HWRF MODELS RACE

OMAR QUICKLY TO THE NORTHEAST...WHEREAS THE UKMET AND ECMWF MODELS

ARE NOTICEABLY SLOWER. THE OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACK HAS BEEN SHIFTED

SLIGHTLY TO THE EAST OF THE PREVIOUS TRACK THROUGH 36 HOURS...BUT

REMAINS JUST TO THE WEST OF AND SLOWER THAN THE MODEL CONSENSUS.

So far we have been dry in Jolly Harbour for the day. I made a trip up to falmouth earlier and it was dry up there too..... when i say dry i mean not raining because after yesterday there are puddles everywhere. I just checked the radar and see that the east side may have gotten some more rain today for a short while too. Whatever happens i think we are in store for more if Tropical Storm Omar keeps tracking up towards the Virgin Islands. I doubt we will escape more rain and according to windguru we are gonna get some 15 foot waves and up to 35 knots of wind thursday morning. I think we have to carefully monitor the track and forecast for Omar because i think many people are gonna get fooled by this joker. As you can see from the image i included, the model tracks put it slightly closer to Antigua and Barbuda today. Not good at all.

Its raining again..suprise, suprise!!  At about 4 pm yesterday afternoon I felt as though I was in London ,IN THE WINTER.  It was dark and cold ,mind you the unneccesary air conditioning was on in the gallery.!! You could hear the gurgle of overloaded gutters, the steady noise of the rain and the swish of cars labouring through deep water and it was dark!!!!  Cars had on headlights.!  sorry but at 4pm?.  We dont seem to have had any serious flooding though  most roads were pretty waterlogged last night. I see American news has noticed the bad weather in the Caribbean, I hope that Haiti ,Puerto Rico and anyone else in the way doesn't get any more flooding from this depression , now a tropical storm. Further to my morning's post, the heavens opened up its pipes even more this afternoon. WOW I cannot remember this much rain other than the passage of Hurricane LENNY in November 1999!

It hasn't rained since around 5:30PM but looking at the Martinique weather radar I suspect we could have a bit more coming this way though I hope I am wrong. The local weather service has cautioned us to expect more rain until around Wednesday so we will see.

I was really hoping to see some sun today but no such luck. I just peeked outside the office and it is still gray and raining. Like some other posters I cannot recall this amount of rain in one sitting, there is water everywhere. Fortunately, it does drain off pretty fast (in some areas).

Now it has become TD#15, and its path is curving back NE over PR and the VI's, it probably means this rain around us won't disappear anytime soon. At this rate I will need to get a trench coat and some wellingtons...

In over 30 years of living in Antigua  six of those on a boat.,  I cannot remember quite so many thunder storms!!.  On Friday afternoon I sat in a restaurant car park for half an hour with a lake growing around me and thunder cracking overhead unable to get out of the car.  Im not a wimp but as I had a lunch date and hadnt seen this person for years did not want to look like a drowned rat!!! On Saturday sitting at home as the skies became darker and heavier the thunder rumbled  and a huge  lightening crack put the power out. So...needed to get more gas for the generator hence a trip to town through what looked like a fast moving river. [ our wonderful road] Luckily not too deep but with plenty of very sharp loose stones.I hope that this depression moves on soon and we can go to the beach.!! Jan

Not only are the trucks destroying our [for want of a better word] road, but the foundation trenches filled with water are mosquito breeding farms. we could charge people to see the waterfalls ..Im very grateful for the lack of hurricanes but please ease up on the rain. WHERE did that come from?  I had checked my stormcarib report which was nothing on the horizon for the present ,watched a movie which is very rare in Antigua at the moment due to a scarcity of POWER!! and went to bed. I was woken up with a crash as lamps were blown to the floor in the living room and and rain was in our bed upstairs. The power was out [normal]  but  the rain was coming from a strange direction and straight on to the veranda and  into the house. The power is still out for a large part of the island  and has been for up to 12 hours.  The problem is that no-one knows if this was caused by lightening, downed trees or design. The storm or blob seemes to have come off the South American coast and has moved on, thank goodness. The winds were gusting to 30 or40 knots but it felt like more ,as we had to hold on to doors to bring patio funiture inside. My husband has been to town and apart from the fact that a lot of places are closed due to the lack of power he could see no damage.  We have an untested wooden house as we moved in in November.so IF we have a hurricane I think Im going to find a concrete bunker!!!Jan

- Tropical Wave with Teeth
  • From: Steve Coghlan <steve at candw.ag>
  • Date: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 09:28:14 -0400
A dark and stormy night was experienced with the passing of a rather vigorous tropical wave through the Windward and Northern Leeward Islands. Distant thunderstorms were observed early in the evening followed by rain (heavy at times) and winds gusting to Tropical Storm force.

Local reports suggest that there was flooding in some areas and some damage to structures and vegetation.

This morning the sky is very overcast with light rain and gusty winds. Latest images suggest that there is more rain to the East, so it will probably be a day with only "liquid sunshine" here in Antigua.

Many of us were surprised at the intensity of this wave. This one may go on to cause problems further West.

Though there was no indication on any winds from this system on any of the main weather sites, we had quite a bit of activity last night.

There was up to 25 knots of wind according to http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/TAPA.html with occasional higher gusts. My satellite dish though a bit weakened with age and rust was blown blown completely off its mount. It started around 2AM and even up to 6AM was still a bit gusty though much lower. There was even a lull before a second session of wind and rain indicating some form of a central area. I hope the USAF plans to check this one out.
