Wondering about friends or family? Unfortunately I am unable to answer all the e-mail at this point of time. You can now post your plea for help on the Caribbean Hurricane Page Bulletin Board.
Do you have any info about the situation on the Bahamas? Please, forward it to me at gert@gobeach.com Also, check out the Bulletin Board. Let's try to help each other out! No news is bad news! Thanks, Gert

More Bahamas news at BahamasNet. Abaco Is. updates can also be found at: Abaco's Community Message Board. Note that you should not, I repeat, not post your plea for help on that message board. They are running in emergency mode and allow only 'new' information provided by ham radio operators and other first-hand reports. Please, post your plea for help on my board. Really, this is serious! Thanks, Gert

Here are a couple reports about Harbour Island from

=============================================

Topic: Harbour Island Damage Update
Name: S. Hudson (spider-wc084.proxy.aol.com)
Date: 09-15-99 21:37

Lots of trees were down. Worst of which is that the Famous, Signature
Fig Tree is GONE! Beach erosion is similar to that of Andrew.
Valentine's dock is gone, as is the HI Marina Dock. The Landing lost a
good portion of the roof. Not a tremendous amount of structural damage
as compared with Andrew. All and all, the island fared well. In fact, as
I was leaving at sunset, the street lights were coming on. I was only
there for about an hour and didn't get to see everything.

Topic: Good news from Harbour Island!
Name: Natasha Sawyer (rc36200.rogers.com)
Date: 09-15-99 20:35

A ham operator in Harbour Island, Darryl Johnson, called into 100JAMZ
radio out of Nassau which I was listening to over the net. He says that
there was damage of course in Briland, but nothing too serious. Also, he
reports that there are no injuries or deaths. The main problem seems to
be with flooding and of course the current and phones are still out.

On Wednesday morning, Parliament met briefly and decided that some
Members of Parliament would visit the islands which received direct hits.
Still nothing has been heard from Cat Island and Eleuthera (sorry Lisa
Krupp). Water damage was reported from San Salvador and the Club Med resort
there. Abaco, which was just beginning its recovery from the effects of the
nearby passage of Hurricane Dennis, had not filed a report as of Wednesday
morning.
In New Providence, telephone lines (and electricity)in the north and
eastern part of the island remained down. Residents are using cellular
phones to communicate. Businesses and schools remain closed, as well as
most Government offices, except for senior civil servants who are at work.
I apologize for the paucity of information, but Hong Kong has hoisted
the red rainstorm warning and, for the first time in 16 years, typhoon
signal # 10 - the most dangerous category - has been posted. All schools and
offices are closed and public transportation suspended. We are expecting a
direct hit and are presently experiencing gale force wins of 150 mph. I am
therefore unable to get into the Consulate office to access any information
that may have been transmitted. Will update you again when I can.

This afternoon 2 planes from Sandpiper went to N. Eleuthera, so the airport is
open.

A flight from Twin Air (based out of Ft. Lauderdale) flew over the island and
reported some damage to buildings and most foliage gone, but it looks like all
the hotels are still standing. No radio contact with the island, yet, but this
visual contact is GOOD.

There are conflicting statements of flooding and docks gone, but have not been
able to confirm. Will post more as I get it.

We got word today that the homes on Winding Bay are still standing with their
roofs intact. A pilot out of Ft. Lauderdale flew over Winding Bay, Cotton
Bay and Windermere and reported that the roofs looked okay from the air. The
VentaClub on Winding Bay is leveled and the RockSound airport is under 4ft.
of water with the old terminal gone. Most damage appears to be north of GH.
There is lots of debris blocking the Queen's HWY.

More later..

Dear Eleutherans-
We're here praying hard for everyone, hoping that the worst of what we've
heard is not true. Brother Jeff and I will be flying over on TwinAir from
Ft. Lauderdale to GHB on Friday at 1pm. We have one extra seat on the plane
if anyone else wants to come. We'll also be bringing a satellite phone--feel
free to call my secretary to get the number, since incoming calls are free.
We'll try to keep it on and will pass on reports of whatever we can find out.
Please call if you would like to make the trip with us.

  • From: "Raymond P. Darcy" <rpd6d AT cms.mail.virginia.edu>
  • Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 23:25:13 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Hi all,
I just got off the phone with my parents in Nassau. They
still don't have power, along with the most of the island.
They also confirmed what I've been reading about all
day...Nassau is a mess, but not too badly damaged.
Most businesses and schools will reopen tomorrow.

One thing that struck me was that she said the portion of
West Bay Street around 'go slow bend' is no longer there!
It was completely washed away, and it looks like a new road
will have to replace this east-west link.

And also, for those interested, Andros island (where my
mother is from) in the western Bahamas received little
damage, just tropical storm force winds and localized
flooding.

Reports from Eleuthera and Abaco, apparently the hardest
hit, remain sketchy, but they are believed to be devasted.

THE ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS
ARE BACK IN BUSINESS
Wednesday, September 15, 1999 at 1 P.M. EDT

The Next Advisory Will Be At 5 P.M. Today

THE 700 ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS - All hurricane watches and warnings are now
discontinued for The Bahamas,
including Nassau/Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island, The Abacos and
Eleuthera as Hurricane Floyd moves rapidly
away from the tropical destination. Hurricane Floyd passed over the Out
Islands of San Salvador, Eleuthera, Harbour
Island and passed between Abaco and Grand Bahama Island before continuing
northward into the Atlantic Ocean.

Nassau and Paradise Island is reporting mostly sunny skies and a light
breeze. Vacationers are back on the beach and
even the golf course is open.

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR CONSUMERS, TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS AND MEDIA TO
NOTE
THAT THERE ARE 700 ISLANDS IN "THE BAHAMAS." AS OF 10 A.M. EDT, HERE IS THE
LATEST
CONFIRMED INFORMATION AND REPORTS:

NASSAU/PARADISE ISLAND

Nassau and Paradise Island, which account for two-thirds of the population
of The Bahamas and almost 70 percent of its
tourism industry recorded winds of between 70 and 80 miles per hour at the
height of the storm. Given the magnitude of
the storm, advanced preparations and some of the best building codes in the
Western Hemisphere, there is remarkably
little damage. There are a significant number of downed trees, landscaping,
small private dock and boat damage, but the
islands experienced very little property damage and no injuries or deaths
have been reported to the authorities as of noon
today. A number of homes, offices and hotels did report a number of windows
had been blown out. Some private homes
have experienced minor structure damage such as carport roofs that were
blown down. A historic wooden structural in
downtown Nassau called "Balcony House" did collapse (with no injuries).

Nassau International Airport has been open since 9:30 a.m. The Port of
Nassau is open and cruise ships will recommence
calls immediately. A number of small marinas and private docks were damaged
as a result of a storm surge and some small
boats have been beached or sunk in Nassau Harbour.

As of noon today, power and telecommunications systems are coming back on
line and are expected to be fully
operational by this evening. Cell phone service is operational. All major
roads are cleared and passable. All schools,
government offices and banks will reopen for business tomorrow, Thursday,
September 16.

Most hotels and resorts are operational and report little damage other than
downed trees or landscaping. No major
structural damage has been reported by any of the major hotels on Nassau and
Paradise Island except for The Sheraton
Grand on Paradise Island that experienced heavy water damage. This property
may be closed to repair damages. Other
properties, including The Atlantis, The Radission, Breezes, Sandals and The
Nassau Marriott all report business as usual.
As a matter of fact, The Radission Cable Beach Golf Course is open and
golfers are already playing the course.

Planeloads of visitors are scheduled to begin arriving back in Nassau and
Paradise Island on Thursday morning.

GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND

Grand Bahama Island, the second largest community in The Bahamas and host to
about 20 percent of the nation's visitors,
experienced some flood damage on its northern shore, away from the resort
communities, and the International Airport
was briefly flooded. Some property at the east end of Grand Bahama Island
experienced structural damage and power
and telephone service have been interrupted across the island but are being
quickly repaired. One person is reported
missing, but no other injuries have been reported from Grand Bahamas Island.
As of 10 a.m. this morning, the International
Airport remains closed and is expected to reopen on Friday.

All major hotels are reporting that they suffered only minor landscape
damage and will return to business as usual over this
weekend.

OUT ISLAND UPDATES

The island of San Salvador, some 200 miles east of Nassau, was baldly hit
and sustained structural damage to a number of
properties and to its two major hotels. No injuries are reported but power
and telecommunications systems remain down.
The airport at San Salvador is open.

Reports from Abaco, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Exuma and Harbour Island are
sketchy at this time but all of these islands
experienced flood damage as a result of storm surge activity. One hotel in
Northern Abaco at Green Turtle Cay is
reported to have sustained structural damage. Power and telephone services
remain interrupted in these islands, but again
is being quickly repaired. The status of the airports remains uncertain at
this time but more news will be made available
during the day.

SUMMARY

In summary, the main resort destinations of Nassau/Paradise Island and Grand
Bahama Island, which together account for
90 percent of the country's tourism industry, are fully operational and open
for business. The Out Islands of Abaco, Cat
Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Harbour Island and San Salvador will continue to
provide status reports during the course of the
day. Further statements will be released during the day as more information
becomes available.

This afternoon, a plane from Twin Air (Ft. Lauderdale) flew about
Briland
and reported that much of the beach appears to have disappeared, as
has a good deal of the vegetation, but that the hotels and other
structures were still standing. I am getting this report second-hand,
so
was not able to ask if there had been any radio contact. Since it is
likely that there is no power and batteries might well be all used up
by
now, there may have been none. I was told that there are no reports of
 fatalities.

 God bless you and yours!

Dear Gert,
I am sorry that I was not able to get specific info. on Guana Cay or Cheryl.

The only in of I have heard from Abaco, that is good news,
is from Earl Russel C6AGH.He is on Green Turtle Cay.
He says that there has been no reports of loss of life on Abaco.
But there is very severe damage to the buildings and infrastructure.

The Radio Nets are currently handling only Emergency & Priority traffic
until they can get the Red Cross and other agencies out there to start
helping the affected islands. They are coordinating emergency relief
efforts
to the islands via airplanes, ships etc.... the frequencies are extremely
busy now.

Please be patient and stay optimistic.
It may take a few days for specific info. of persons, unless they themselves
get to a Ham Radio operator on the island.

Now we are switching to handle Hurricane Floyd's attack on the US East Coast
and
then Hurricane Gert. It is going to be a very busy couple of weeks.

Thanks and best regards,
Julio WD4JNS

are bringing down with us..... If anyone has any word about Guana Cay please

communications center at these E-Mail addresses for Guana Cay and the
surrounding islands. We have help on the way but need more information...We
may need more help down there....
We hope to report back soon that the people of Guana are OK....we expect a

Hi everybody,

I received the following e-mail from Sheryl Christ's mother. As you know
Cheryl aka Abaco Girl, is our hurricane correspondent on Guana Cay, Abaco
(see her updates below). Since phones went down yesterday morning we
haven't heard from her.

If you hear from her, please let us know. The only contact now with the
islands is probably by HAM radio. Anyone with a HAM radio, and able to
reach people on Guana Cay, could you please ask around about the well
being of Cheryl.

I am confident that she is ok, but it would be very reassuring to hear
some kind of news...

Thanks,

Hi ..

Well, in Nassau, we didn't get it as bad as we thought we would ..the winds were about 70-80 mph, however the gusts did range from 100 mph -120 mph ..There are lots of trees, telephone lines and electric lines down islandwide. Many boats were sunk or thrown miles down the end of the harbour, some large mail boats were even beached. The Stretch of Arawak Cay to Western Esplanade, was damaged, mainly by high surges, and downed trees. Some talked of roofs blowing off in some areas of Nassau, also there were many 'flying' Satalite dishes(the large dishes, not DSS), and antennas.

The western side of the island apparently was unpassable, from Deleporte point to love beach or beyond , due to heavy surges from the high seas. No word on damage to Lyford Cay as yet. Atlantis Resort and Casino had to evacuate about 12 am Tuesday morning, it residents to a conference room, according to reports from the radio. Amazingly the Love 97 radio station here was on all through the storm and had people calling in every minute.

On the matter of crime during the hurricane, due to loolting, there were reports on the radio of widespread looting throughout Nassau, which was backed up by my own sitings of many teens in groups walking around in what seemed to still be about 60 - 80 mph gusts, and heavy rain, at about 2pm Tuesday. They were breaking in shops, smashing windows and causing distress. One shop merchant on Bay street was standing outside his shop with a shotgun as there was very little show of police. In the entire Hour and a half we drove from the east end of the island to Arawak Cay(downtown) area, and back, we only saw one police car. And the police commisioner on the Radio claimed there were only 4 or 5 breakins earlier. I work for an alarm company and know of more than 4 breakins of our clients, none of which were amonst the ones reported by the Police Commisioner. Also, we saw approximately 15 breakins on the island as we drove around, and they only covered east bay street, shirley street, and bay street areas. So why was there no 'State of Emergency' ever called? This was the question of many residents and shop owners.

Still no news from San Salvador ..as yet. Basically, 3/4 of new providence island has no power, no water, and the entire western end of the island is without phone lines, including the Bahamas Metereolgical Department.

Other than that, minor structural damage on the whole, minor injuries, in New Providence, however we're yet to find out about the damage to the other islands.

Currently I'm using a shop's computer that has a generator, as my water and electric is off also.
I must go now ....lots of cleaning up to take care of ...

Good luck to all

I have spoken to a few people in Freeport this morning (9-15-99). They seemed
to fair well wind wise, winds seemed to be around 80-90 MPH. The airport
area and Queens Cove was flooded by storm surge and waves. According to ZNS
last night, Water at the Airport terminal was above the counters and cars
were floating in the airport parking lot. This morning it still has about 6
feet of water.
