Wondering about friends or family? Unfortunately I am unable to answer all the e-mail at this point of time. You can now post your plea for help on the Caribbean Hurricane Page Bulletin Board.
Do you have any info about the situation on the Bahamas? Please, forward it to me at gert@gobeach.com Also, check out the Bulletin Board. Let's try to help each other out! No news is bad news! Thanks, Gert

More Bahamas news at BahamasNet. Abaco Is. updates can also be found at: Abaco's Community Message Board. Note that you should not, I repeat, not post your plea for help on that message board. They are running in emergency mode and allow only 'new' information provided by ham radio operators and other first-hand reports. Please, post your plea for help on my board. Really, this is serious! Thanks, Gert

- Hurricane Floyd
  • From: Camille Faye Johnson <cafajohn AT netvigator.com>
  • Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 17:09:01 +0800
The northern Bahamas is still under the effects of Hurricane Floyd.  Yesterday, all schools( except those used as hurricane shelters ) and most government and commercial buildings were closed.  The National Disaster Committee was called into operation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained contact with its overseas mission re. the potential severity of the hurricane.  Students abroad should contact the nearest Bahamas Overseas Mission or Ministry of Tourism Office for recent information on conditions in The Bahamas.
In anticipation of inaccessibility at its head office in Market Plaza, the Ministry of Tourism established additional contact numbers for communication,  including an uplink with intelsat and toll free numbers in the USA for access.   After the passage of the hurricane, the local telephone service operator, Batelco, was knocked out, so it is still difficult for links to be made from the US communications network.
The north and north east coast of the island of New Providence were hardest hit by a surge of water that has washed sand, loose rocks and gravel and associated debris across to the other side of the road.   Telephone lines in this area remain largely inaccessible, although BaTelCo has called in all of its technicians to effect repairs.   Some areas along the Eastern Road, East Bay & Shirley Streets, are still without electricity.   Shortly before or during the passage of the hurricane the roof of one of the schools scheduled for use as a shelter was blown off, but those sheltering were successfully removed to safety.    Residents in the south of New Providence fared better, and telephones are still accessible in these areas.  Potable drinking water and electricity are available there.
Generally, residents took the storm warnings seriously.   There has been no reports of loss of life so far and residents remain in good spirits.  The Building Code which was strengthened and rigidly enforced by the Ministry of Works after Hurricane Andrew in August of 1992, was effective as there was no significant damage to structures erected after that date.
On the Out Islands, the Local Government Authorities are to be commended as their immediate presence aided with the identification of those in need of assistance and the provision of same before the storm hit.
We are still awaiting information on conditions in Abaco, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama and other northern islands in the direct trajectory of the storm.
I shall post another update tomorrow.

For the Bahamas... because we have been through it... maybe it will help to read someone else's words...

The aftermath of a hurricane can be worse  than going through the actual storm...
Physicologically it is a nightmare to wake up the next morning and find your house rearranged...  part of the roof   across the street...or you  can't even find it...  the solar panel and tank... well there are so many around;   which ones   belongs to who....and  it does not matter anyway as they are all bashed up....  (solar panel always fly in a REAL hurricane! -- so just expect  it  to be gone...)  even clothes blown around!!! it is fine to talk about mandatory evacuation  like they do in the real world... but   in  these little  islands we have  no choice..     we stay with  and in  our  homes    and hope the roof doesnt go...    when we woke up from LUIS and walked outside I was in shock.   (actually  I didn't wake up because i never really went to sleep...  how can you sleep with winds of 125 mph plus whipping around you! ..  anyway, at first  I wasn't able to function..   it took some time..    then friends came and  started to help with the clean up..     I remember the first thing i noticed was there were no birds.... we usually wake up to the yellow breast banana quips chirpping away....waiting for their morning feed of breadcrumbs and sugar....  they were all  gone...and it took a long time for them to recover....but they did...
I knew I had to get my act together to recover... so I started with one thing at a time..   first to get the roof waterproofed temporality...  HURRICANE MARILYN followed a few days after LUIS so we had tons of rain  dumped on us...the wind did not matter.. what could blow away was already gone...but getting  soaked again was no fun...and HURRICANE IRIS  had been here a few days BEFORE  LUIS hit us... but she was just given us a few puffs in comparison...  Anyway... after  making  a dry area.... one room at a time... to make it livable...place to sleep first... place to cook next... and it slowly came together... but it took about a year to really get over it all!   we didn't get our electricity back for 4 months... till just before Christmas... a nice Christmas present..
So..  hang in there guys -- and just know that it will get better and I hope none of us go through this too often...  after LUIS in 1995 we had George in 98 -- last September... and it was pretty bad too....but not like Luis...  It looks like GERT is gonna spare all of us as he is heading to open Atlantic as of early this a.m.. so take heart.... and rebuild your lives..   Thinking you there as you are all going through the "waking up"  this morning...

Hello everyone,
I'm a Bahamian student in the US. I haven't been able to
get through to anyone in the Bahamas all day, but my mother
just called to let me know that they are allright.
Apparently they can call us, but we can't call them. Phone
service is sporadic.

Our home is on the southern coast of New Providence outside
Nassau, in the Marshall Rd./South Beach area.

According to my parents, the southern part of the island is
not as bad as the northern part and Nassau. Widespread
flooding is reported in Nassau, eastern New Providence, and
along the northwest coast. In our neighbourhood (Marshall
Road), trees are down, power is out but flooding is
minimal, thank God. I was scared that the storm surge had
flooded our area, but apparently the storm surge was
concentrated along the northern coast. I continue to pray
for the rest of the Bahamas. It seems this was a bad one.

Hi, yes I'm interested my husband is currently on Guana Cay.. and I
personally know Cherly (Abaco Girl) I'm leaving via charter flight Friday....
send me info as my friends and loved ones are all in danger and the only form
of communication for the island has been ham radios' unfortunately (Sandy on
Guana Cay lost battery power at 11:00 AM and that's when the phone lines
finally gave way. Mean while I've been listening with friends here in
Miam/Ft. Lauderdale to the ham radio operators reports and calling the
Hurricane Car. Radio department to get info. Last thing we heard was from
Earl Russell on Green Turtle Cay ... he was just losing his roof. Tomorrow
morning we heard from the radio operators they will have a search and welfare
report a sorta roll call to find out what operators on the islands are up and
running. The only other means I have is from an Insurance agent here in
Miami that has a fleet of boats he insures in Abaco. His friend who is also
a boat Capt. named Bobby Randall has a cellular phone with Bell South that
has service.... I'm supposed to get word in the morning on conditions..... I
will try to pass the word around...
we need licensed hand radio operators on the island to continue the
communications. I think I''m going to sign up for classes with the Hurricane
Ctr. and set up a base on Guana Cay...

Send me info.... I hope all 53 souls are OK (God Bless Guana Cay)

We heard from relatives who made it to Miamia yesterday from Freeport
that the Freeport Airport is now underwater. Whereas Fishing Hole Road
commonly goes underwater under the right conditions of high tide and
wind, I can't recall hearing of the airstrip being submerged before.

To those who responded to my message of earlier today, thanks for the good
wishes and I'm sorry I have no further info at this time. Shortly after I
posted my message I lost phone contact with the island, and have not been
able to get any news from any other source yet, either. This is actually
my mother's email address; I will be leaving here tomorrow morning to head
down to N. Palm Beach, and hopefully get over to the island by Thursday.
My own email address is bbay AT grouper.batelnet.bs, but of course, I can't be
sure when I'll be able to access it. As soon as I have any news I will
post a new message on the Hurricane pages. Thanks again and good luck to
those with friends and family in the islands,

We live near West End on Grand Bahama; I am in Florida at present, having
come over ten days ago for a visit. My husband is at our home there,
having waited too long to try and leave. He and some friends and our five
dogs tried to get to a friend's house in Freeport this morning around 7:30
a.m. and the Fishing Hole road was already under water and impassable. So
essentially everyone still west of Freeport is stuck. He estimates the
winds at West End to be around 40-50mph with slightly higher gusts (8:30
a.m.) So far the phones are still on; as long as I can get through will
continue to post reports. I don't know if this is the right forum for this
or not, but have to say that the Bahamas government has known about
problems with that 100 yard stretch of road for years and done nothing
about it. Having said that, the residents know it well and all who wanted
to go to Freeport should have done so last night. However, the Princess
Hotel was the only one in Freeport that we were able to find who were
letting rooms, the other inland hotels all closed. Needless to say the
Princess filled up quickly. Good luck to all in Floyd's path, I will be
glued to the Internet, TV and phone til it passes.

Thanks to all of you watching this board for your emails. I am actually
in Longwood, Florida ... waiting for our small share of the storm. We
have family in Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbor. This morning they were
planning to move to a two story dwelling to avoid the possibility of
rising water. We really don't expect to hear from them again til the
storm has passed through and the phone lines are restored.

If, by some miracle, we get another update from them I will let you
know. Until then, we wait and pray!

Hurricane update from Nassau - 2.49 pm
--------------------------------------

Winds picking up, seas rough, people have put their boats on dry dock, and most people have secured their windows, belongings etc..

There was chaos this morning at the local foodstores, as unfortunately the Bahamas is not prepared for disasters of this or any other type. By 11 am there was no drinking water in gallons or 5 gallon bottles at any store on Nassau. One of the major Water depots closed as they ran out of water and were not making any more. The only other main water depot had long lines and it looked like the end of the world. There was so much traffic that the water depot could not get any trucks out to deliver to other stores. At about 2pm they started to deliver(finally :-)

So, trafic is terrible, and there is basically alot of tension and worry among Bahamians. Persons living on the ocean have been advised to Evacuate inland more.

In all, if this storm hits us with 155 mph winds, there will be alot of devistation throughout the Bahamas, including complete damage to the small houses made of wood, and the beautiful scenery.
Perhaps there will also be many unfortunate deaths as with any disaster.

Good luck to all who are in the Bahamas during this huge storm. Buckle down and don't go out wandering. I will personally be filming the storm from my window at different times. These will be freely available online at a later date.

Hi

I am in Nassau, Bahamas. At this moment 3:23 am Tuesday September 14
Floyd is shaking trees and packing very strong wind. I went out side to
see it for myself for a few minutes. The cans are rattling junkoonoo
cowbell style on the street and the wind is thumping the heavy goatskin
drum beat on my windows. Please sign me up for reporting on Floyd
because the government gave us time off to be safe at home and Floyd
will be around to another 24 hours. I hope Gert does not come this

always seem to be the worse at night. We figue the winds are somewhere
around 90 and gusting higher.

we still have elec. and phones. (that's unusual, but, I'm glad.)

It should be going on low tide out there now. and high expected at

We're waiting on a weather update to see where the eye of the storm is.

The backside will be the worse.

Hi Gert,

We are all fine here on Great Guana Cay. Our elec and phones went out on
Sat morning...That's after the eye of the hurricane passed over us. It went
from bad to worse after 9 am here. The storm pounded us for over 12 hours.
Thanks goodness we have a generator. We were able to follow the weather
channel, only to see how slow the storm was moving. The winds were over 110
mph. No one was injured here. A few small boats overturned. A few
shingles blew away. Mostly trees were down. On the north end of the
island new Sea Side Resort, the water totally washed away the road.

On Sunday, the winds subsided, we all came out and surveyed the damage.

Today , Monday, everyone was out doing cleanup. Our places are ready. Come
on down.

got up at 2 am to unplug my computer). A few rain bands are moving thru.

We're securing boats, making sure we have gas for the generator and water to
drink.

Hopfully, some of the mosquitoes will blow away with the wind..hahha

So, far, it's calm and just hot here on Guana Cay, Abaco, Bahamas. We're
under a watch...

We have 2 power boats and a sail boat that we look after...we'll be checking
on lines tomorrow.

Keeping an eye on the weather channel.
