- beautiful weather on the north coast

The weather here is gorgeous with rain at night and hot sunny days.  A big thunderstorm on Wednesday night dropped 3 inches of rain but by the next morning it had all dried up and everywhere was green and sparkling.  I was down on the south coast last week and it was a different story - very brown and dessicated, but that's why we have tropical rainforest and they have cactus.  What a wonderful varied island this is.

The weather is wonderful at the moment - hot and breezy with blue, blue skies, palm trees waving and hummingbirds buzzing around.  February is coming to an end and with it the end of carnival month here in the Dominican Republic.  Great times all around the country all month especially at La Vega and Santiago.  Cabarete has been hosting the Master of the Ocean triathlon this week - surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, and the weather has been great with plenty of wind.  www.masteroftheocean.com

The sea here also looks like the north Atlantic, grey-green with big rollers on the beach and whitecaps to the horizon.  We had heavy rain yesterday and last night with very strong winds which tattered my poor banana trees.
Still breezy now but with beautiful blue skies and a cool 79f/26c - folks have their coats on today.

Is it the start of something?
Can we learn from it?
Would be the next season worst?

- Chilly weather
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles20 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 19:46:41 -0500
Good evening...

Since yesterday or so, weather is nice, this strange but familiar cool wind is what we call "el vientico de la Navidad" (little Christmas wind).

At least I noticed yesterday morning when I woke up for my morning walk before go to work, at that moment it was what we Dominicans may call "cold weather" since in the capital of Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo) we are unfamiliar with temps below 23 C. Temps in some areas of the country, specially Constanza, registered temps near 10 C!!. That is just the beginning, on February, Constanza get below 0 C temps (In international measure system, water freezes at 0 C).

Today also was chilly, but less than yesterday.

Thanksgiving day is an exclusive USA tradition, but the concept of giving thanks to the creator, Jehovah, is mandatory, that is what I like about that day, few families in this country celebrates that day with Turkey mixed with traditional Dominican food on Christmas holiday, for me, yesterday was the best day to start holiday season with the Dominican typical food 'Sancocho'! (7 meats stuffed with other things that i don't know how to mention in English, like plátanos, yautía, ñame, yuca and Auyama), sadly, we didn't, but soon.

We Dominicans (hopefully the whole christian world) like Christmas season, we set our christmas tree starting mid-October (we did at October 15th.) and we party and eat along all December, it's a tradition in our family celebrate Christmas eve dinner with turkey or pork, with lots of pasteles en hoja (mashed green bananas stuffed with "worn out meat" <had to use a translator to say that between " ">), pastelitos, telera (somehow the french bread, but twin bread!), russian salad (potatoes, carrots and petit pois stuffed with mayonnaise.

We also celebrate new year's eve, with fire works, all families get together, we like to eat pork also.

Kids get toys on Christmas' day and on magical kings day (January 6), so, as yo can see, we party more than any country, allow me to say =).

Well, I would say I talked too much, for weather issue, I would like to say that no more systems for this season, but remember that we got hit by tropical storm first week of December in 2003 or 2004 can't remember well, but right now, no threats!

Stay tuned...

Nothing to say, all these days have been quiet, typical hot-humid weather perfect for beaches, surfing, wind surfing, rally, horse riding, biking, camping, picnic, etc.

I attached a photo, beautiful sunrising, about 6:25 AM local.

Enjoy!

Good evening...

These days have been nice in weather terms. I hope that the people from Nicaragua are OK, they just got direct hit from a once cat-2 hurricane Beta.

There is no danger ahead but this tropical wave that will leave "t-storms", this is the usual Caribbean weather, "the waves", though it is from that point that everything starts, but no further development is expected as things are right now, it will quickly pass and again sunshine for everyone!

Stay tuned...

I must admit I was in England when Alpha decided to cross our path. Four
thousand miles away apprehensively watching the news bulletins, however I am
delighted to report that I am now back home and Alpha has well and truly waved
goodbye to us, not having done any major damage along the way.

My husband and I arrived back at Puerto Plata airport last night at almost
8-30pm, four hours late after waiting for an alternative plane, ours having
been sent on a rescue mission to Cancun to bring back holidaymakers stranded by
hurricane Wilmer. I have never seen Puerto Plata aiport so busy, probably 10
planes on the ground. My friend Linda who works for Thomson Holidays had had a
manic day organising flights for 2,500 holiday makers to be brought from Mexico
to the Dominican Republic. I would like to wish all those people who are here
instead of Mexico a very happy and relaxed holiday with all those memories of
the hurricane behind them.

Good morning...

Beautiful morning here on Santo Domingo, I was checking local news and just found that there were inundations on several part of the country, lots of rain on the mountains, here are some numbers:

-3 persons are reported disappeared.
-1 inujured.
-over 5,000 refugees.

Power outage on most of the south-west part (where the stronger winds were).

Further, local authorities alerted of more rain, but that that will not happen it seems a good bet.

I am VERY upset with the title of local newspaper Diario Libre referring to Alpha as an "UNEXPECTED STORM" and I am A LOT MORE UPSET with local authorities that did not warned the people like the way it should be. Man that is what I call a bunch of lazes sleeping on their home, and excuse me, my fellow compatriots if I just did ofend you, but you now they do not make a good job at all, this was just barely a tropical storm that quickly weakened as it entered.

Also, there is some braking news, there is a bad smell in the air of Santo Domingo, there is a huge gas leak or something in the "Refinería Dominicana de Petroleo", where fuel and other petroleum substances are processed, I still don't know if the storm affected the instalations.

There is nothing else threating the island right now, so if you plan to come on the next days, don't worry about it.

Good afternoon...

The weather has not gotten worse anymore since my last report. Current conditions are no rain and light wind. Sometimes rain, but lightly.

I used the Google Earth tool to get this two pictures, and dray lines on it to give you and idea of where Alpha entered and what it encountered.

On the first pic (route.jpg) you can see where Alpha +- entered and crashed with the sierras and cordilleras, the red circles are the mountains and the white line is proximally the route Alpha took. route2.jpg shows the distance between Santo Domingo and Barahona in a straight line. Enjoy.

Stay tuned...

Good Morning...

Just woke up and looking outside, the is little rain and some wind, looking at the satellite, this shows almost the whole island of Hispaniola covered, except for the very eastern tip and north coast in María Trinidad Sánchez province.

I woke up in the middle of the night and saw outside, lots and lots of rain at that moment.

Gotta rush to the kitchen and prepare some coffee and drink it on the balcony.... mmmmm =)

Yes, we have power, and the streets are clean so no debris of trees or else. The storm made hit on Barahona, I will try to get updates from that area.

Stay tuned...

Here it is raining, blowing  about 20 knts from the SE and the satellite pic shows the whole island coverd by bad weather. Just talked with my daugther Patty who is in the north coast and she reported rain but little wind.

Hopefully the mountains northwest of Barahona will take care of Alpha

Hello...

This is what is happening:

Alpha is a tiny tropical storm, it seems that Santo Domingo will not get wind, currently, Rain comes rain goes, people in Pedernales and Independencia (south-west tip of the country) provinces should pay attention on this system, too bad that that part of the country is the poorest and less communicated, hopefully a couple of dozens maybe less, may be online. Haiti got to watch this system closely.

I will take a warm shower and then land on my bed, so that means no more updates from me until morning, unless i wake up with something slamming my window, I'll be locked up, with the A/C on.

Stay tuned...

Hello...

Current conditions does not let you know that we are going to be under severe T-Storm and wind, you can see few stars between clouds, is not raining, the wind is calm, the air feels nice, the night, currently, is perfect, at least in metro area.

Alpha is expected to hit us within the next hours as a Tropical Storm, the quickly be downgraded to TD as it encounters our island's very tall mountain chains with peaks oscillating between 2,000~3,000 meters high.

Conditions could get worse within minutes, I will keep you updated with the latest.

There is something spinning under Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, but still not Alpha, what caught my attention is that the first time i saw this on normal satellite image, i thought that it will touch the south-western tip of the island, but when i look at this one (see attachment), actually the system may cross over the country, and this is a very special storm, it could be the Alpha, first time in history since storms get names, that there could be an Alpha, and we could be the first country to get hit by an Alpha.... let me hold my breath.

One word... B E A U T I F U L morning over here, nice and fresh, Christmas spirit is arriving at Dominican's door, stores are filling up with Christmas stuff to sell, we already set up our tree, is fat and big, also we are waiting with anxious granma that is arriving tomorrow from New Jersey after 1 month and a half visiting part of our family that lives in the US.

Wilma still spinning in the Caribbean and is heading somewhere inside the golf of Mexico, again, my prayers and thoughts to those that may get involved with this system, currently affecting our brothers in Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.

There is something suspicious over the lesser Antilles, could it be Alpha? whatever it is, it seems that may bring some rain or general bad weather to the Dominican Republic, lets hope not.

Bye! Gotta go to work.

Unbelievable, the last name of the hurricane name's list is already taken, and with style, cat-2 to cat-5 overnight, "asombroso".

My prays and thoughts for those who may be affected somehow with this system.

Still 42 days left for official season to end, I would say that we will meet Alpha, and probably Betha anytime soon, because is yet enough for at least a TS to form, and with this historical season.... amazing.

Local News: Floods and many towns due to showers of previous days, but right now, hot and humid (bad combination), and party cloudy. Lately we are receiving rains at night time.

We had a fair morning but by 3:00 PM we are back in the soup.Acording to the satellite pic we are in for a lot of foul weather, at least for 2 more days.

There have been reports of flooding inland, and some trees down, vegetables are going to be scarce until this blows away, never too soon.

We are under severe weather conditions, heavy rains with significantly strong wind gusts.

Lots of trees are being knocked down, main avenues with debris of trees and other dangerous materials that could do as projectiles. People in the streets are having a hard time to move, this weather is punishing.

I was thinking about that maybe some tropical depression or TS could be forming on our yard, satellite images shows a huge low pressure area extending from Central America to as far as the Atlantic ocean up to the north.

Residents near rivers and water ways are warned at this time, the earth is absorbing too much water from several days ago, a catastrophe may occur anytime.

Stay tuned...

Hi,
Maybe this message will not pass, as electricity and internet is cut
from time to time.
South coast of Rep Dom, is presently hit from at least Santo Domingo,
Las Americas Airport, to Juan Dolio,
since 3 days, by a lot of wind and rain, much wind, very much.
The main street of Juan Dolio, is under one foot of water.
Half of Juan dolio, is without electricity.
My empty swiming pool, is filled up by two feet...since it started 3
days ago.
I live here, 150 m from the sea, and hear it the rushing water until
here.
The sound of the wind is increasing since a couple of hours, and is
going up and down.
So maybe, more wet news tomorrow,

- RAIN!!!
  • From: "Hnas de la Caridad" <hnas.caridad at verizon.net.do>
  • Date: Wed, 12 Oct 2005 17:14:42 +0200
Rain, rain and more rain!  The river in Baní, one hour west of Santo Domingo, is swollen to about three times its size, making it impossible to pass through, as is usually done.  It is swift and very dirty and because of this, the water company has shut off the water so all the silt will not get into the water treatment plant.  The result?  We are using water from buckets which we filled a few days ago.
Everything is wet--and it can't dry.  Mothers have nothing clean or dry for their kids to wear.  Several kids are out in the streets playing in the rivers of water--not a good idea as there is quite a bit of garbage in the streets and some people use the "river" running outside their house as garbage disposal (not a good idea either as the garbage has to go somewhere).  We have had at least three real downpours today and it looks as if another is coming.  We live on the edge of a desert and so get very little rain normally.
However, I know we have nothing to complain about as we do not have floods as in some areas.  Also, I am glad this is not a hurricane.  I do hope the rain stops soon, though.

Good evening...

Yesterday was the first nice day out of several bad weather days, but today went back ugly again.

Yesterday it was party cloudy, no rain (or just few drops in the vicinity).

Today: Somehow cloudy in the morning (at 5:15am on my morning walk), but suddenly at 6am or so, fog came from the mountains and you know the rest, it wasn't that extreme as few days ago, this time I took two pictures (see attachment).

Today also very windy, showers and cool temp. When i say windy, i mean very windy.

Thanks to 'Jill in St. Croix' I have tracked the site from Noaa, It caught my attention the issue of "explosive atmosphere conditions", yes I already saw the caribbean satellite but i didn't know how bad things were.

Heavy T-Storms expected in the next several hours from now, and you can see that, we got Cumulonimbus clouds over the nation, at least I saw it on the noaa report.

I like rainy days, but as long as i stay high and dry. Yesterday (Friday) driving to work, lots and lots of employees where I work arrived LATE because this city virtually paralyzes when we get soak rain for several hours, and the traffic get stuck (specially when you are on a road with several schools ahead, parents park by the side spawning traffic jams on local roads at about 7:50am >.<)

Good Evening...

Since 3 or 4 days ago it has being rainy, stormy and/or windy, all mixed.

Heavy rain reported yesterday and before yesterday. Today it has being rainy but more lightly, however the sky has been over casted ever since.

This morning we woke up with thick fog, and now, that is getting darker, you can see fog coming from the mountains (about 30 kilometeres away, you can't see farther from that). Maybe the fog won't come down all the way to Santo Domingo, but I could imagine that the highway to Santiago (center of the country and between two mountain chains, what is called here Cibao valley) is very foggy since the road goes near the mountains, though awesome view.

Stay tuned...

It has been extremely hot here at Cabarete and very dry.  Tropical depression 18 dropped some much welcome rain on the coast last night, although the mountains have had plenty of heavy rain over the weeks causing landslips and road washouts.  Luckily we are not a dry island like some of our neighbours.  I have missed the short 1/2 hour thunderstorms every second night that we are used to.  Our thoughts are with the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos.

Good morning everyone...

We are under TS threat, after 2 or 2½ months (sorry if I am wrong) we were under no Tropical System threat, well, we have not even got direct hit, just 1 scratch from Dennis.

Now, TS Philippe is a bit far, but is one to watch, it is east from Puerto Rico, if it tracks north-west, it may pass north from us, I will post more about it as it gets close.

Have you ever think what happens if we run out of hurricane names? Philippe is formed, there's a TD about to take the name Rita, that will leave the last 4 names: Stan, Tammy, Vince, Wilma, and yet still a bit more than 2 months. Let me refresh you the memory, on the first week of December 2003, just when we though Hurricane season ended, Dominican Republic did deal with an off-season TS Odette.

Right now, warm and sunny.

Stay tuned...

This is a special post offering my apologies to anyone of you that could get offended by my last post (already edited by webmaster).

I feel sorry for those affected by Katrina and I was just loaded with 'anger' (please allow me say that) that these people were not getting help at time.

My country, Dominican Republic already sent a letter to USA government two days ago and will send anytime this week 50 men to be in disposition to local authorities in New Orleans, so at least we are doing some help, in case you didn't find out (http://www.diariolibre.com/app/article.aspx?id=42661 [in Spanish]).

My apologies again, and lets talk about weather:

Really hot right now, no hurricane threats, clear skies.

First of all, my sympathies with those people affected by Katrina in some cities south of USA.

Now back to our business....

It's being just hot, that's why I am not posting that much, nothing to tell. There have been some rainy days, thunders, but immediately gets hot. No tropical system threating.

Now some off topic news (what is really hot right now):

Fuel. Yes, the fuel is on the rise, our government has posted some declarations about how we are going to deal with this issue, they are announcing that according to the last digit of car's plate, even numbered will be allowed to drive Wednesday, uneven will be allowed to drive Thursday. If barrel of crude reach US$85, our country will be declared state of emergency, which will allow us to stop paying our external debt, since all the dollars we produce will be swallowed by the quota of fuel import, and Dominican Republic will fall into "default" status (that's what they said).

Prices of fuel in our country are controlled by government, this means that ALL gas stations has the same prices peer gallon, and every Saturday 12am (the beginning of the day) new prices are posted. Gas prices just keep breaking records, thru all Friday you could see long lines of cars waiting the get their tank filled with this troublesome liquid. Premium fuel, converted into dollars, cost US$4.31 peer gallon, my vehicle uses Diesel (luckily), I pay US$3.00 peer gallon.

When will this stop? Ò____ó

Good night all, stay tuned...

- HOT!!!!!!

  • Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2005 17:20:33 -0400
Oh well, sorry folks I haven´t being here for a while, but you have not missed nothing but this heat wave is attacking us, yesterday I made a recognition about weather issue, I was a bit outdated, I don't know what is it with this DUST issue, don't ask me, which I could tell, but i am VERY curious about this.

NOW THAT YOU MENTION THIS DUST ISSUE, I WERE LOOKING TO THE MOUNTAINS FROM MY BALCONY AND I BARELY SEE THEM, VERY surprising, like something is in the air, maybe moisture, who knows.

You see, in this country, houses and buildings are made with concrete and steel (that's called armed concrete), they absorb the sun rays easily, and release them SLOWLY (wooden houses release heat faster, making them cool at nights), making inside like hell, but oh well, we are used to it, then if i turn on the AC i feel guilty because electricity here is one of the most expensive in America Continent, wouldn't be surprised if it were of the whole world. We just started to use 2 AC and then BUM! electricity bill made all of us cry. So I don't turn them on over day, just on nights, and not all the nights, just fetch a COLD shower and you are OK.

Hot here, hot there hot and hot, nothing else. Just saw one neighboor, can easily watch him since i am in an 8th. floor, he was hosing down his roof, which is ridiculus considering that concrete roofs has at least 10 ~ 12 cm thick, but oh well, who isn't desperate?

Stay tuned...

Hey folks, weather is nice, very hot though, yesterday few rain then this sun heating water, awfull hot.

I was having fun with this tool i got from internet (Google Earth), and I looked all caribbean islands so I can know more about your locations.

There are very good detailed topographic images about our island, I am having trouble to find the 3k+ meters high peak "Duarte" because it is a bit higher than La Pelona peak.

I recommend you to get this free tool from google, you can see very detailed landmarks in some cities around the world.

I attached 3 images:

-Santo Domingo: You can see the Dominican Republic's capital.
-Dominican Republic: A nice perspective view from our part of the island and you can see Puerto Rico at the background. -Enriquillo Lake: This is the biggest lake in caribbean, it is deep, scary (for me) very salty and full of alligators, the island on the middle of the lake is Cabrito Island. -cabrito: You can see cabritos island, it has 13.42 km long (8.34 miles) and 2.48 km on its widest part (1.54 miles).

The tropical wave does not look like much compared to Emily, but here in Bani in the southwestern area of the Dominican Republic we have had nothing but rain, rain, and more rain, along with some flashes of lightning and some pretty good claps of thunder.  The dogs have been riding out the storm safely in my room while I have been checking to make sure the water running down the street doesn't come into the house.  The neighbourhood kids, of course, are playing in the water that is rushing down the street and having a ball.  I'd rather have this than a hurricane.  Besides, I don't have to water the garden.

Good afternoon!

Well, nothing more to say that we have beautiful weather, very hot though, also feel sorry for our friends in Yucatan Peninsula, our prays are with you and those who still on Emily's path.

Well, it is obvious, we dodge the bullet. I have gotten some mails from persons that are worry about our aggressive weather here on the caribbean, I haven't get enough time to reply but I hope this report may be some use as for general reply.

Bávaro beaches are among the top beaches around the world. The water simply CAN'T be more crystal light blue~green and and the sand "whiter". If you are worry about Emily shaked our coastal waters (Santo Domingo City's coast line got a bit dirty due to sedimentations carried out by Osama River, but heading to the east, after Las Americas Intl. Airport is Ok, Boca Chica is nice, but I personally don't recommend Boca Chica Beach or Juan Dolio area beaches. I prefer Bávaro, Punta Cana and all in Puerto Plata Province.

I envy you, being dominican citizen, I barely go to the beaches or rivers. I wish someday enjoy Bávaro Hotels (not that I can't afford them, just too busy working and studying >_<).

The Dominican Republic got wet when Dennis passed near, some structural damages (like bridges and houses) were reported in South-West Region (from San Cristóbal to Pedernales). I heard that in Azua Province rained a lot, but those issues are old.

If you were listening to previous reports, I said i had family coming from New Jersey, USA. They are here with me, they are happy with us, having good times with all my family. I remember that driving back to Santo Domingo from the airport, the highway is coastal, they were just amazed about the HUGE waves crashing along our rocky high coast, some waves could reach the east-bound side of the highway, great show, haha, but it was not raining, though, later that afternoon, it rained with some gusts, nothing serious.

Well. that is all for now, no tropical threat, great weather, it is hot, hope you enjoy your stay on our country.

Stay tuned...

She is gone , but Emily left her marks

Last night we had a nice lightshow on the beach of Juan Dolio, flashes
all over the sky
We were sitting on an enormous amount of trees and other garbage Emily
left on our beach.
The cleaning has to start again, we get used to it, i think.

Its 9.00pm Friday night and Santo Domingo is quiet.  We have had two or three heavy showers with a few gusts. Probably get a few more. It looks like Emily will not cause any major impact on the Dominican Republic.  Attached are some photos I took on the Santo Domingo, Malecon seafront this morning.  Incidentally I got totally soaked by a huge wave, as I took these pictures.

  • Date: Fri, 15 Jul 2005 07:03:52 -0400
Good morning!

Well, it is a BEAUTIFUL morning here in Santo Domingo, clear skies (few few few clouds), no winds, no nothing, and as I see the satellite images, I see why. Emily currently is compact so no bands reaching our island.

Locals newspapers warned that rain and winds may impact south zone, but they are talking about Tropical Storm winds, Emily just went too much to the south than predicted earlier this week.

The "How close it can get" tool from this site shows that Emily will reach its colsest point of aproach within 9.3 hours. See attached image.

As promised, I would bring pictures from seaside, traffic was awful heading down to the coastal avenue, and I was surprised (not that I am an expert either) but sea was quiet, not big crashing waves or else.

The clouds that covers the city are supposed to be part of Emily's tentacles reaching us. Local authorities said that Major Hurricane Emily represent NO DANGER for the Dominican Republic, however, Tropical Storm Warnings are posted for south-west coast (from Punta Salinas to Port-Au-Prince in Haiti).

Pictures, for those who loves pictures I brought a lot, in them, here are the descriptions:

0987: Traffic, awful as I said, it took me more than usual to get to the seaside.
0990: Look at the sea, peacefully, no picking or big waves at all.
0993: View from traffic at seaside.
0994~0999: I found a spot to park my car and walk to the edge to take a better look, all peacefully, you can see people fishing and playing on the grass.
1001: Starting to rain, few drops anyways, it tells you that from now time conditions could get worst, anyways you can see the clouds, you can tell.

Well, hope you enjoyed a view from Santo Domingo.

Stay tuned...

Good evening!

Just saw the 11pm report and Emily was upgraded to Cat-1 Hurricane and got better organization.

But still not curving north which it can be said that we may breath easy as time passes, the more difficult it is for us to get hit by Emily.

In other terms, beautiful night, I will head to the coastal avenue to see the sea tomorrow and Friday to take some pictures to the sea picking up.

- Emily expected to cross more to the south than earlier
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles20 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 09:19:09 -0400
Great news!!

I've seen many weather reports, they saying since two days ago that Emily will curve west-northwest eventually, bla bla bla bla, still heading to the west AND predictions now put Emily to cross more south than earlier predictions, great! but bad news for the lesser isles, no matter where Emily enters the caribbeabn, it will hit somewhere because... the just too many islands spreaded everywhere!

Ok, we may feel the outer bands punishment and the brave waves (which give us the capital citizens a great natural spectacle of the waves crashing into our rocky high coast), or some winds with showers.

Letme tell you something, on previous seasons, this had happened before, storms that for some reason doesn't turn north earlier, then we dodge it! =) STILL, too early to say, these storms could be very unpredictable.

Stay tuned...

  • Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 09:01:52 -0400
The more southernly track taken by Emily and the fact that the storm is still a tropical storm are good news for the DR. Forecast models sustain this track. But as past experiences have shown, one cannot be sure until the storm has actually passed by so the recommendation is to not become complacent and to continue monitoring the storm. Meanwhile, in Santo Domingo, the weather is lovely, with blue skies, a light breeze and a pleasant 28C at 9 am. For specifics on other areas in the DR and to follow the storm from a DR perspective, see http://dr1.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34

Weather in the Dominican Republic is hot and sunny, with a few scattered clouds as everyone has been told to monitor Emily as it enters the Caribbean neighborhood. There is nervousness, as two hurricanes one after the other is unheard of for July. Meanwhile, DR1.COM weather reporters stationed in the north, east and southeastern destination areas and the capital city of Santo Domingo carry out their usual business of reporting on the weather in their areas.

Hello my friends....

Friday is an important day for me, things happens on Friday, not only because it is weekend and everybody party, go to the beaches, hotels get more people, etc. I'm receiving family coming from New Jersey, USA, at 12 o' clock (midday).

Unfortunally, Emily is predicted to be somewhere near or over us! By that date. I saw the news TV today and the prediction for Saturday was Emily could be attacking our island! Models shows that she will curve to the north, skipping Puerto Rico but kicking Dominican Republic, hopefully it is too early to tell and so predictions also says she will gain strength, but slowly, and may not be major hurricane IF she gets here.

I don't want my family to be received with some troublemaker system, or flight being cancelled, we could just pick them up and get here fast, our structures are full armed concrete, not even a cat-5 hurricane can tear down this tower, but our city will be a little dirty to take them out to have fun.

Emily, such sweet name for a Hurricane. This season is yet more interesting than previous >_<*

See attached picture too see "how close it can get" model from this site.

Stay tuned...

yes, now we have Emily. Definately one to watch out for us here in the DR.
The convective pattern has improved significantly during the past 6 hours,  the forecast track had to be shifted more to the north, which would bring Emily over Hispaniola in about 120 hrs.
By then she might be a major dangerous huricane.

Oh dear, there's another TD, and that kind of path it's taking should tell us that we must be alert.

At the moment, T-storms are forecasted for today in metropolis, maybe isolated, not big deal. In weather terms, we had beautiful weekend.

Local newspaper Diario Libre already warned us about TD5 moving west-northwest.

I have to remind that after Hurricane Georges, we haven't taken any "direct hit" of any major hurricane, just scratches or weakened systems, not the same as some of the lesser isles that have taken double punches or Jamaica that took 2 hits I think in two years. I guess our island is an expert in the dodging-bullet business =D

Dennis Raining on Domingo's Parade

Rainbands from Dennis will be affecting much of the DR tonight

Santo Domingo, Wednesday - The outer rainbands of Dennis began spreading inland across the southern coast of Hispaniola Wednesday afternoon. Hurricane warnings are in effect for the southern coast of Haiti, and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from the border eastward to Barahona in the Dominican Repuiblic. At mid-afternoon the center of Dennis, packing 70mph winds, was located just a little over 200 miles south of Santo Domingo. A hurricane hunter aircraft from the US is investigating the storm now and it is expected that Dennis will be reclassified as a hurricane by later today. This is the earliest since the naming of hurricanes became general practice in the 1950's that four named storms have occurred in the Atlantic basin. In the busy 2004 season last year the first four named storms had not occured until Danielle formed on August 14, five weeks later in the season than Dennis' emergence on July 6 of this year. Dennis is moving to the west-northwest and is expected to become a major hurricane affecting Jamaica, The Caymens, Cuba, and the US Gulf Coast from Thursday through Saturday. Some models indicate wind speeds could approach 125mph or more when the system is at its strongest. For continual real-time information on Dennis see the DRSol Dennis Portal Home Page.

Good Morning!

Today we woke up with dark clouds menacing with potential heavy downpours, I could watch fast motion on some clouds, I suspected this because on my morning coffee reading the newspaper there was a report that TS Dennis could be a threat for south coast tip (Barahona, Pedernales and Independencia provinces). Right before entering the building I work, on parking lot I had to grab my umbrella, as soon as I jumped off the car, wind gust, light drops, that was a mess, I got in the building right on time, suddenly Niagara Falls outside, GREAT! no need to visit Canada. (joke)

Lets hope Dennis goes away without threading Haiti, Cuba or Jamaica, nor of the caribbean island, United States should watch this as it may fell on the Gulf and gain strength.

I have to say, I was surprised by this system, already the 4th. named system in less than 2 month! This season is very interesting though.

Stay tuned...

Yes, and as NOAA said "here we go again" refering to hurricane season 2005, published the name list that systems would take after become a tropical storm.

This years's season is predicted to be very avtive (above average) and that it is about a pattern which started in 1995.

Well, things over here are WET! yes, as some ppl know, or at least on the region, rain season starts usually in May, and since a week ago, we have started to feel the rain power, specially last night, when unusual heavy wind gust blowed with heavy rain (we got in time to save our big umbrella on the terrace before it could get broken or being blown away).

As a gift, im posting a picture from 15 minutes ago, you can see T-storm clouds to threaten us with some more... r-a-i-n, ;D
