Antigua is  COLD.. people are  complaining!  . last night's low was  69 degrees  - chilly for us  islanders!   and the  sea is  FLAT CALM.... beautiful for the boaters.
We continue to get the odd rain shower which keeps the island green, when we are  often  much drier this time of year.

Hey all,

Other than a few clouds floating by, it looks like it will be beautiful weather this weekend.

Yesterday brought some sporadic showers after a beautiful blue sky holiday morning.

There is a heavy patch of  clouds  through the islands and  we are told to expect  rain for the next  3 days.   Just hope some  stops long enough to allow run off.

Today is the  23rd Anniversary of  the  Independence of  ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA ....

There  was  a big  parade and  official cermony at  8  am  (under the  rain)   which is ending now.   The skies are  dark all around us   and  it will most likely be  a "rainy day in paradise",  not ideal timing  but we always welcome  rain.

In between streaks of clouds, we were treated to a total eclipse of the moon last night.

There was lots of moisture still in the air so it was not as clear as I have seen it in the past but it was worth going outside to see.

  • From: "Alan Scholl" <scholla AT candw.ag>
  • Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 08:52:03 -0400

For the past week, we have had too much rain. The ground is totally saturated.

Saturday, nature gave us a lightning display that rivals anything I can remember in a long time. At one point the lightning flash and the thunder occurred at the same time, so I can only assume the strike was pretty near! There was more rain and thunder again early this morning 3-5AM but it has all cleared up and the sun and blue skies are out once again.

Of course, whenever I wash my truck, it rains. We had such good weather for a few days I tested it and oh well, torrential rainfall all of last night and the whole of today. It is completely gray and visibility is pretty poor due to heavy rainfall at the moment. Tourists may be grumbling but the farmers and animals are happy.

Over the past 18 hours, we have been experiencing thunderstorm activity with lots of rain. It is completely overcast except for a small patch where the sun is trying to peek out over the ocean. Other than that, there are regular lightning flashes followed closely by the roar of thunder. As I write this, visibility of the Shekerly mountains to the south just went to zero.

Good Morning Everyone!

It's another beautiful day here in Antigua after an early morning of rain, lightning & thunder.  Actually it was a heavy thunder clap that woke me up from my sleep & my daughter's little feet running from her bedroom to ours.lol

The sun is now shining brightly and the air is still rather crisp.  That's what happening in paradise right now.

Today is a beautiful day in Antigua and  good news for all of the islands  is   it looks like  LISA  WILL TURN NORTH as the tracks are showing.    We are still watching  the patch behind her however,  and looking forward to the end of  this hurricane season and the terrible wrath of  nature this year has brought.

Beautiful sunshine day in Antigua..just spoke to someone in Barbados and they say the sea is like a lake  there.. maybe from Lisa being out there...

LATEST NOAA TRACK AS OF 5 am today looks much better for our little paradise..  showing this north turn on SUNDAY..  don't usually like to  wish away even one  second of this wonderful life.. BUT ROLL ON
with a north turn  and BYE BYE LISA   we hope - still double checking my  batteries / emerg. lights/  things stashed about  in the  garden that could  go "flying like a kite"...  we in Antigua are pretty   hurricane savvy and hopefully that  will keep us from being  blown to bits like the  1995 LUIS did!   or if we do ...getting back on our feet more quickly as  that is the hardest part of  a hurricane.. the  rebuilding...

IF  we must have another  hurricane developing  on  our  doorstep this  is a good one to have as    all models show  a  NORTH TURN..  as of   5  am this morning/ Friday the discussion below by  Nat. Hurricane Center makes  me feel very HAPPY AND  THANKFUL  that  a NORTH TURN  SHOULD OCCUR...(  it is   still coming  due west now...towards the islands  and that always makes me  nervous...but  they do  predict a NORTH TURN  - check out the posting below  -  still  this is nature and we  have seen some weird things.. like HURRICANE   "LEFTY"  LENNY   which hit in late Nov. 1999 (you read about this  bizarre hurricane at    http://www.stormcarib.com/hurr99c.htm#td16 ( it turned around in the  Gulf  and CAME THE WRONG WAY as  it danced down the island chain  ending up in ANTIGUA  in that NOVEMBER!!  --
good site to see Karl's  projected path

AND  today in Antigua  the skies are  blue again... slightly overcast the  the  very  end of  JEANNE... and  we did have some  final wind bands yesterday as  John posted... but think  we  are getting back to our  "paradise" weather!     so all of you  tourists coming to enjoy    -- come on down!

My first experience of a hurricane is Hugo in 1989 then the subsequent parade of Luis, Georges, Jose & Lenny.  However, even though we did not get a direct hit this season (let us pray that it stays that way) I will never forget the 2004 Hurricane Season.

I have never seen such a parade of storms in one year.  I have always respected storms but after this year I think that I may have a newfound respect for them.lol

I used to tell my friends in USA that after Luis I can manage anything but after seeing what Ivan did I may have to do some serious thinking.lol

Jeanne have not even cleared the area now i'm hearing about another disturbance.   All these disturbances can give a girl heart trouble.

Sadly...the  US Gulf coast is  in a  big mess with what  Ivan has and is doing.. so many people without  power already  and too early to say what the real  damage is.. just spoke to my mother in Mississippi and they are getting  heavy rains but wind has not picked up yet (they are somewhat north...)

BUT CONCERNING NEWS for the islands   IS  THAT THE  BLOB WE ARE WATCHING OFF THE  AFRICAN COAST IS DEVELOPING...possibly to be  KARL.. THE SITE BELOW IS A GOOD  SITE TO  SEE IT ..
IT IS  NOW MARKED AS  A LOW
DON'T  KNOW HOW  THE ISLANDS ALREADY HIT CAN TAKE MORE..OR  FLORIDA...ALREADY WATCHING JEANNE... SO LET'S HOPE THIS  BLOB  TURNS NORTH (guess that  is  not likely given the path of  most of these this season)

Now is the time to buy those extra bottles of water and tins of canned food, so that we are not caught off-guard and unready.

has brought  a lot of  rain and  stormy weather to Antigua during the day.
A number of  our  schools were  closed due to  heavy rain and
fishermen were called in due to heavy seas....
but  we  were  lucky that  we  did not get  serious wind...  -  as mentioned in earlier posting  39  mph was max I measured.  At 11 a.m.  Jeanne was about  100 miles to our  south west and continues  to move away.   Our met office  says  by tomorrow  we should  out  of the  heavy  cloud cover.

GUYS   -   GREAT TO BE   HOME  -  even with STORMS brewing all around our paradise!!!!  after having  been  "stranded"  in London  for  5  extra days due to  Hurricane IVAN the TERRIBLE  --  believe it or not..(amazing how this  hurricane has affected people  far and wide..)   Ivan  closed the   TRINIDAD  AIRPORT when it pasted the southern Caribbean , home base for  BWIA AIRLINE  (which I was flying..)   so  no  planes  were coming into  London Heathrow..and  none out!    Finally was able to jump on  flight  into Barbados and make my way north  home!
Late yesterday afternoon  we were advised a  depression was  forming on our doorstep  JUST TO THE EAST OF  GUADELOUPE ...our neighbor to the  south..Am sure this will soon be   NAMED  JEANNE -  . the sites below  show  what is on top of us   (the first two  sites  are   real time sat  so  as it moves on   it will not be over  Antigua   -     Antigua is the island  just above the  "butterfly island" - Guadeloupe..  Last night and now  early am  we  have had  gusty winds (max I measured was  39  mph) and some rain fall.   We are still  getting  some of this but   are now on the  edge  so once again ANTIGUA IS  SO LUCKY  in missing these terrible hurricanes...  Hearts go out to  those  in Grenada and  Caymans  and Jamaica ... and other islands  badly  hit by  IVAN...and  those in the path now

5 AM AST TUE SEP 14 2004
..TROPICAL DEPRESSION ELEVEN NEARING TROPICAL STORM STATUS...

TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD ALSO AFFECT THE REMAINDER OF THENORTHEN LESSER ANTILLES TO THE NORTH OF GUADELOUPE.

P.S.  (Antigua is the  first island to the north! )

BUT WE Still HAVE TO WATCH TO THE  EAST AS  THERE IS  ACTIVITY OFF AFRICA ..
CHECK THE SITE BELOW  - MIDDLE IMAGE

Below the most recent Meteosat-7 image, focusing on any waves coming off the African coasts. These waves have the potential to develop into hurricanes.

I just got home and there were some 20 -25 mph gusts along with a slight shower.

It has gone back quiet again but will keep you posted.

If any depression is forming, it will form right on top of us!

LOOKS CERTAIN THAT JA WILL SUFFER A DIRECT HIT OF A 4/5 CATEGORY STORM.

WE PRAY AND HOPE ALL PREPARATIONS ARE FINISHED BY THE LATEST FRID 10AM.

THE ONLY CONSOLATION IS THAT THE ATTACK WILL COMMENCE IN DAYLIGHT.

IT’S AWFULLY MORE FRIGHTENING AT NIGHT.WE KNOW THAT HERE.

Subject: HURRICANE IVAN

I am posting from London, England... have been off island from my home base
antigua for one week but have been trying to keep up with this terrible IVAN
am heartbroken to learn of all this hurricane damage to GRENADA.. I was
a Peace CORPS VOLUNTEER there in 1975 so Grenada is especially close to my
heart...and having been through being blown up for Hurricane Luis I know
the shock and devestation they are feeling... thoughts and prayers go out to
all on Grenada...

i was due to fly back to antigua from London TODAY on BWIA but there is not
an incoming flight from Trinidad due to the airport there being closed
down and i can get no information (except that flights are cancelled) from
the BWIA office here on rescheduled flights from London to Antigua at
this time so dont know when this will all be sorted out - i know it takes
time to sort it all out and many others are stranded (if anyone
reading this has any firm info would be gratful for an email to
gilkesm@candw.ag as it is difficult to get info...
Antigua is so lucky that we had not effects from IVAN --but there are
trouble spots out there now in the Atlantic... so we all have to hope
this terrible hurricane season is soon over with no more damage to anyone...
and now we are watching the path of IVAN as it goes towards our sister
islands in the hope they are spared...
