The rain finally just started ....gently. We've been watching the sea and sky
build up
all day in so many greys. The veggies, florals, and fauna , all, say thank
you .
Let us know how much rain you are receiving?

  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2016 16:15:41 -0400
Today's orchid and coconuts are missing the rain from the same day a year ago.
Last Feb 13 we had 11 inches of rain in 10 hours. We lost our weather head and
connection to
our public power company WAPA. TODAY WE CELEBRATE ONE YEAR OF BEING OFF THE
GRID. We would take a few inches of that rain today. We are hotter, dryer and
have a shocking
amount of Sahara dust for February. We are hoping for a clearer horizon soon.
The tomatoes love this weather.

weather gurus explain that ? We are enjoying the incoming sailors and snow

  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Sat, 28 Nov 2015 09:23:22 -0400
Yesterday was a stellar day as depicted in Isabel's crisp pictures from St
Croix. Today is the opposite as you can see from our Atlantic facing deck on
west end of St Thomas. The east end may be sunny and bright? Expecting some
seas to be 10/13'feet in the advisory. We are full up with the jet and yachting
set ....hope thy find a calm spot. Woke up to a huge downpour that went on
longer than needed. We have a new river running thru the gut.
Expecting more. Stay safe and dry.

The moon woke me at 5 am to show off before sunrise. This is looking west from
the northwest side of St Thomas towards the Spanish Virgin Islands. Grand day
for Thanksgiving, grateful for an uneventful storm season here in St Thomas.
Hoping those still facing storm repairs will be healed soon. We are the lucky
ones. Thanks again to Gert and all of our island reporters.

- Morning Sun on the Solar Panels
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Tue, 10 Nov 2015 08:22:23 -0400
82 degrees at 8:15 am,77% percent humidity (feels almost dry ?). This is the
time
of short days long nights and waiting for morning sun on the solar panels. We
are
in our first 9 months of living off the grid and learning to shape our lives
and power
consumption based on the weather. By disconnecting from public power we
reconnect
with nature. Looking forward to a few days of drying out. Time to plant more
veggies.
Looks like more rain in a few days.

Super rainy, boomer weekend, a few times yesterday felt like a category 1 ,a
little
solar charging this morning and now back to big shaking boomers right over head.
Stay safe, warm, well and dry. We are under a flood advisory. The super yellow
sunrise was the clue for today.

76 degrees this morning......chilly! Rain over night, and the night
critter orchestra was in full volume at 4am. 91 yup 91 % humidity
in the rain forest, west end St Thomas. The solar collector is
hoping for some full sun today.

- BOOMERS ALL NIGHT LONG
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Sun, 1 Nov 2015 09:22:42 -0400
Bark, boom, big boom, crack, , flash, repeat , most of the night. The shepherd
was beside herself shaking, crying and barking. The terrier felt badly for the
big dog.
Very little sleep for the humans. Have you noticed that during stormy nights the
frogs hit a lower note? We received about an inch of rain and will take it
any way we can get it. The lettuce and greens love this cooler weather.

Hoping for some sunshine to boost the solar collection system today.
We are showing 83 cool degrees and 88% humidity; so , so tropical.

Being an hour later than the East Coast goes over very well in our home
office. Season is here .

Isabel's picture of sunrise in St Croix inspired me to take our sunrise
picture. Out here
on the western end morning light comes later. The seas were pushing a high
surf and we
saw riptides yesterday. Seawater pushed back up many feet onto Brewer's beach,
surprise surprise. The sea looks much calmer now and fall is in the air.

- MAJOR RAIN EVENT
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Sat, 3 Oct 2015 11:14:41 -0400
Here on the West End of St Thomas we are getting a soaking. Morning temp was
82 early and now 74 degrees. No wind at all. The guts are overflowing as well
as the back up cistern . The pooled is super topped off, the waterfalls are
running.

We have had thunder since yesterday afternoon and now it is right over us.
As we are off the grid , we boosted batteries with the generator, as this will
not be a solar collecting day. We do not know if power is holding in town.

Lots and lots of rain .

Take care and let us know how you are doing. Hoping that
Dominica is getting none of this. Bahamas let us know how we can help.

It is cold ! Amazing

  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2015 08:44:29 -0400
It is 8:30 am and the weather station on our outer deck is already showing 87
degrees.
Super hot and still now. Very flat seas. Assuming the visitor northwest of us
is
pulling all the breeze and waves away.

I wonder how my co-workers in Maryland are doing? Looks like a recipe
for flooding and erosion up there.

We swam in Lindbergh Bay yesterday, one of our favorite beaches near the
airport. The water was very hot. Probably the hottest I have ever experienced.

Our pool water is 91 degrees, like soup.

Anything is better than a storm headed our way.

Reminder to the weather watchers, many thanks to Gert for this forum and I
am sending my donation today.

Stay prepared. Warm tropical regards,

- 20 years After Marilyn
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Wed, 16 Sep 2015 09:11:24 -0400
Dave's words remembering the aftermath of Marilyn echoed so many of our
experiences.

I remember the neighbor that brought us his last 1/2 bag of ice. The crew from
Four Star Air Cargo Puerto Rico that sent us groceries for the bbq almost daily
for
weeks. Washing the airplane mechanic's grungy work clothes in buckets siphoned
from the cistern. And the celebration we had when the power came back on
November
28,1995. Yes.....2 months plus several weeks without power.

We were humbled by the sheer force of nature, the kindness of everyone, and the
way most islanders downplayed their own losses and needs. We will never forget
our harsh lesson.

We think of Dominica everyday. We will continue to help.

With a little rain last night, today is humid, abit grey as we wait for the
solar
power to build up.

Stay prepared for the rest of H season.

- Dominica, thunder dawn
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Sun, 30 Aug 2015 14:31:24 -0400
We woke up around 4 am to tremendous thunder, so close at one point
that the lightening and boom came at the same time. Out came the thunder
jackets for the dogs and the south to north event over our heads lasted til
about 5:30 am with a few drops of rain.

Wide wake , the plans to help Dominica formed.
There are drop off sites on St Thomas and we will take our donations to
Fortress Storage
by Saturday Sept 5.
> We will gather small lightweight personal hygiene items and lightweight
> foods
> (Small, bags of nuts, etc) for many people. The main runway
> has been destroyed and all items will probably be barged in, and some
> airlifted to villages
> In the hills, that have damaged bridges where many people are trapped .
> We are asking our friends to put together small travel size items,
> shampoos, soaps, menstrual pads, toothpaste (super expensive in the islands)
> ,baby wipes
> (work great when you don't have clean running water, )
> toothbrushes, small wash cloths(easy to wash out by hand) ,pillow cases can
> become
> purses and carryalls ; combs, small brushes, hair ties, bandanas.... think
> what you would want
> if you were hot and sweaty and dealing with flood clean up. This will be round
one of many future donation drives for Dominica.
We are 100 degrees on the outer deck, and have power to run fans and a fridge
to
make ice and store food in, how lucky are we?
> We all know Dominicans, they will survive, rebuild and it will take all of us
> to
help them. This will be a long road, and if you have ever driven there,it is a
bumpy road.
I will never ever forget the calabash forest or the huge crabs along the rivers.
We will return to Dominica for sure. We wait to hear that our friend was able
to talk
to his Mother in Dominica.
Pay attention and take care..

- Look ,Observe, Use Common Sense
  • By Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>
  • Date: Wed, 26 Aug 2015 12:14:47 -0400
The aviator in our house pontificated at length last night about those that
would choose
to 2nd guess Mother Nature by putting off storm preparedness. The simple truth
is,
if you want to sleep well the night before any kind of storm you button up
before dark.
When I saw him checking StormCarib at 2:30 am during the Danny threat I
realized
something was still in limbo. When do you decide to spend the 3 hours it would
take
to bring the solar panels down from the roof? What is your criteria ? Do you
believe
the solar installer saying they can take up to a Cat 2?

Many in the islands like us have gone off the grid, or are on net metering due
to
outrageous power bills and poor electrical service. Let us know what your
criteria is
and what you plan to do with your solar or wind generator set up during storm
threats.

We first installed inverter #1 with panels enough to run the pool, office, pump
and washer
In 2009. It took about 1/2 hour to bring those panels down and now we have gone
off the
grid and have allot more panels to contend with. We will see what Erika brings.

We observe stronger winds than any normal August day this morning, with gusts
up
To 10mph. Not much , but we are tucked up tight into a hillside and it is only
Christmas
winds that usually stirs our shutters. It is super hot today. The south side of
the island
seems flat around the airport, our northwest location here in the jungle hut in
Fortuna
is very hot ,95 degrees on the outer deck, and winds are coming and going. The
Atlantic
side is showing some chop.

Be prepared, observe and use some common sense and sleep well. Pace yourself,
no matter what, we have to deal with the train off Africa at least til November.

let's not do the heat index math. Wind at 2 mph with "gusts" to 6. So much
moisture leaves us no horizon as shown in this picture from our deck facing
NorthWest.

Listening to the tapping of raindrops into the cistern. The thirsty tomatoes
are having
their first natural shower. Glory Hallelujah....thank you Mother Nature.

- Orchids Like It Hot
  • From: Jane Higgins <jhigginswear at islands.vi>

At 9am it is 88 degrees on the outer deck in early May on the Northwest side of
St Thomas.
What was the rain forest area is now the super dry crispy crunchy falling
leaves side of
our little island. The Sahara dust map says it all, and the water mon is
running up and down
the hills answering the cries of empty cisterns. We are not sure when Mother
Nature will
step up. All waste and grey water now serves the gardens.

Our Zumba Troupe survived 93 degree heat during our dance down Mainstreet for
the
Carnival parade on Saturday. It was Hot,Hot, Hot.

Our orchids obviously love this weather. Hopefully the tomatoes that are set on
won't drop
off. The iguanas are coming in closer every day,and scorpions are looking for
cool spots.

Stay cool and safe.
