Good Evening to all readers of Stormcarib,
My kind neighbour on the Searocks has been reading my rain gauge and
we have had 3.85 inches since the beginning of May, very welcome to the cistern,
pool and plants. I attach a pic of my Yucca in full bloom saying ‘wonderful
rain’ I hope my Locus Tree has survived, there are no Locus trees in Anguilla
and I found the seed of this one on Shoal Bay East (it looked like a brown
leather purse) and amazingly it has grown. It has however been very hot and
humid lately around 90F, I wonder what the sea temperature is?
I wish everyone a great weekend.
Kind regards,
JH

Good Evening to all wherever you are, especially the lucky ‘People of
Paradise’ to borrow Trinidad and Tobago’s phrase,
It seems to me that Stormcarib has been a bit quiet lately and bearing in
mind that Gert depends on hits for the survival of the website, I thought I
would put in a bit of a trivial report. In Anguilla as far as I hear from
friends, the Festival Del Mar in Island Harbour over Easter was a great success,
the weather is wonderful as always 86F ish daytime 78 ish at night and a few
intermittent showers to keep the cistern topped up, and a couple of Humpback
Whales have been seen gamboling in the Atlantic in front of my house.
On another subject I attach a couple of pics. Different people have
different aspirations I suppose, if you long for a boat...........? There are
differences!
I also heard on the news lately that transgender people in North Carolina
are having a problem with public toilets, not knowing much about this at all I
wonder if Mexico hasn’t got it right. When I was there diving a few years ago I
made my way to the Ladies Room and when I found it, I found 3 doors the one on
the the left said “Caballeros” the one on the right said ‘'Damas” and the one in
the middle said “Indefinidos” maybe a little lesson for North Carolina???
I wish everyone a warm and happy evening (it has been snowing here in the
Lake District on and off all day, I went from T-shirt to thermals in 8 hours
when I returned).

Good Evening to all readers of Stormcarib,
Sadly three days ago I had to leave Anguilla on a beautiful day, temp when
I left was 84 F and the rainfall on the Searocks for March up until I left
last Tuesday 22 March was 2.08 inches. Air France behaved impeccably left on
time arrived on time, but the police army and security in Paris was quite scary,
also on the Eurostar. Julie Andrews sang ‘Brown paper packages tied up with
string’ were one of her favourite things but I have to say they are not mine,
there were several abandoned at Charles de Gaul airport in Paris and they were
quite frightening, bearing in mind it was 16 hours after the Brussels bombings.
Here in The Lake District we have 60 MPH winds tonight with driving rain, temp
about 55 F, not my cup of tea or what I am used to. I leave you with pics of my
penultimate dive, beautiful File fish, a huge Spiny lobster on walkabout and a
little reef shark wanting to get into Dougies bag which was full of dead
and injured Lion fish.
I wish you all a great evening, especially those of you enjoying the
Festival Del Mar in Island Harbour.
Until the next time my best to all,
JH

P.S. For those of you interested my little foster dog has a new home in
Philadelphia and flies there next Monday.

- February rain

Good Evening to everyone where ever you are,
Anguilla has been having sparkling weather this last week, before that we
had very big seas churning in from the Atlantic. The temp today has been a high
of 84 F and last night it was 75 f, pretty perfect temperatures when you
consider the rest of the world, and our rainfall on the Searocks for February
was 1.47 inches – not enough. I have been fostering a little Island dog who was
found under a dumper truck tied up with wire in a very distressed state, She is
full of character (not all of it good I hasten to say) but is the most
delightful little dog and extremely bright, she will be looking for a new happy
home in a month or so, if anyone is interested check AARF. see pic, the other
pic is some beautiful pristine coral I took on our wonderful dive to Dog Island
last Saturday where I am happy to say all the marine life was thriving.
I wish all a great evening,

A lovely day to everyone from Anguilla, it is really sparkling out there.
Current temp in the house is 78F but I am sure it is 4 or 5 degrees hotter
outside in the sun. Rainfall for January on the Searocks was 1.78 inches, so a
bit better than some of the other islands but still not really enough. I had a
lovely dive at Anguillita on Sunday and was passed by 2 beautiful spotted Eagle
Rays at about 60ft , I attach a not very good pic of them as they went flying by
into the blue.
Best to all,

Good Evening Everyone,
The most beautiful evening, the almost full moon (it is full tomorrow) is
sailing across the sky shedding it’s silvery light over Island Harbour and the
ocean beyond, Air France has just left from St. Martin heading North East for
Paris, I often wonder what the lucky people on the flight deck see from those
amazing heights, how they must wish sometimes that they had a camera. The
current temp is 80 F (better than Washington DC and New York at the moment), the
sea however, as Dougie says is a mess, we have had huge rollers coming in off
the Atlantic, so no diving, and yesterday there were 5 brave lads surfing the
waves on the reef in front of the house. We have had .50 of an inch of
rain in the last two days, most welcome by me and my plants. Today has
been a good day, I haven’t missed my little brown dog too much and a kind friend
gave me Rocket Prawns and Passionfruit Icecream for lunch, so again I feel
blessed, beauty is a great healer and Anguilla has that in abundance. I attach
Dougie eyeballing a little moray eel on the wreck of the Ida Maria a couple of
days ago for your amusement.
I wish all a very good night,

Good Afternoon Everyone,
Temperature 78F in my house which is very pleasant and the rainfall on the
Searocks for Dec 15 was 1.30 inches and so far this January we have had .40 of
an inch, not to be sniffed at I suppose but could do with more. We have huge
rollers coming in on the north side from that storm mid Atlantic, they are
making the ocean look like turquoise milk, not optimum for diving but quite
exciting to watch from the balconey. last night as I sat, glass in hand,
listening to the surf breaking on the reefs and watching Orion’s Belt gently
climb the sky I did feel very blessed in so many ways, then the new moon showed
me her silver crescent, so yet another free gift. I attach a pic of
playing with Angels at Little Scrub Island.

I left a beautiful warm (83F) Anguilla yesterday courtesy of JetBlue from
St. Martin for Boston Mass where the current temp is 41F, with what we would
call ‘a thin wind blowing’. I am here for a short time to see my family and I
just wanted to wish all Stormcarib followers and correspondents Peace and
Joy this Christmas and all good wishes for the coming year.

It has been a beautiful day today and now the sun is heading west and the
sky is becoming a lilac pink with little gold and grey clouds, the ocean is
still deep blue and the sound of the waves breaking on the reef is constant and
calming. I have to share the most extraordinary sight I had diving on Wednesday
morning (see pic) we were diving on the Ida Marie wreck and I came upon a
Peacock Flounder with what looked like a bubble coming out of it’s mouth, Dougie
(the oracle) explained that the flounder had tried to eat a miniscule baby
Burrfish which had immediately blown itself up as big as it could, almost the
size of a golfball, and what we had was a Mexican Standoff, the flounder
couldn’t swallow the burrfish, and the burrfish was not deflating!

Good Morning where ever you are,
I do hope Thanksgiving is a good and happy and full-tummy day for all. Here
on the Searocks the current temp is 82F on the balconey, a bit hazy, a bit of a
ground sea running and we have had .41 of an inch of rain since I arrived on
14th November. Unfortunately I haven’t been diving yet as I have had a
humdinger of a West Indian head cold since I arrived and still can’t clear my
ears, but soon soon I hope. Last night’s full moon was gorgeous rising and
bathing Island Harbour in a silver light that was coming and going in shafts as
the clouds went by.
I thank all of you so much for your kind emails re my small brown dog, and
I wish everyone a great evening.

I have just arrived back on Anguilla where the sun is shinning, the breeze
is cool, the ocean serene and deep blue with it’s turquoise fringes around the
shore line. Temp is about 87F and there has been a lot of rain in the last month
and the Island is lush and green, pool is full, cistern is two thirds full and I
am so glad to be back. It has been a dark time for me as my little brown dog
left me last week, and I miss her terribly, I am sure many of you understand
this, those of you that met her will miss her too. I apologize for not
mentioning Remembrance day but I did read the exhortation and lay a wreath of
poppies at the local cenotaph last Sunday in the pouring rain and strong winds
(we had gusts over 70 MPH that day), and I was in the tender arms of Air France
on the 11th.
Wishing everyone a great evening,

Unlike St. Martin, here in West End, Anguilla we have not had a drop of rain all day. I have heard of heavy rain in the east (where it is raining right now) and the Valley all day long, but we have watched storms pass us all day/week. We have had only ¾ in. all week long, an my cistern is still only 1/3 full. Maybe tonight. Steve Donahue www.anguilla-weather.com/ Anguilla, AI2640, B.W.I. Good Evening Everybody,
First of all sending love to Dominica, and to all my Dominican friends in

some winds and overcast but NO rain, he says it looks like rain but ‘none comin’
so my other neighbor who owns one of the water companies will still be happy. On
another note congratulations to Karani James of Granada (finished 4th in the 400

Actually partly sunny here right now, but there has been some change with Erika. Air Force recon flights this AM report some strengthening with 50-60 mph winds and higher gusts. It is forecast to pass 50 mi. south of us and the recon flight reports 55 mph winds out 30 mi. to the northeast. Looks like some windy, squally weather for us later this afternoon. Big concern for us? Rain. Latest satellite shows most of the rain concentrated to the south of the storm. The storm is just passing Antigua and radar shows very little rain to the north (see below). While most of the forecasts out there just talk about wind, I am very skeptical of the 3-5 inches of rain for us – or anywhere even close to that. In fact, this could be another “bust” just like Danny – and our serious drought conditions could persist. But maybe some showers – big one’s please. No further updates from me – but please keep checking the NHC - http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

No real change from earlier reports – still passing mid-day Thurs. south of us. Thunderstorm activity has decreased some today but is slowly building again – though not real impressive. With these fluctuations up and down, the forecast accumulations of 3-5 inches of the much-needed rain for us could be a dream. Let’s hope not. Not a lot of change since yesterday, except some decrease in forecast wind speeds. But this is a large storm and it’s pushing the dry air ahead of it. Because of that, there is a possibility for some strengthening before arriving here tomorrow. Current forecast calls for passing 35 miles south of us mid-day Thursday, but rain/possible thunderstorms could arrive as early as later today. Because of the uncertainty re: track and wind conditions, I would PLAN for the following (based on current data): · Winds 50 mph, gust to low 60’s · Wind direction starting from NNE, clocking W then S and SE · Heavy rains of 2-4 in., possible more. Some flooding in prone areas. · Wave heights of 10-12 ft. (buoy just south of storm today reported 9 ft. swells) · ANGLEC turning off power perhaps as early as tonight. · Ferries to stop later today, resume Friday sometime. As always, check the NHC website at 11:00 am for the latest - Steve Donahue www.anguilla-weather.com/ Anguilla, AI2640, B.W.I. US Phone – 410-505-8661 Anguilla Phone – 264-497-8177 |

Not a lot of change from the 11:00 AM NHC update except that the track has moved a little south of us – maybe pass about 20 mi. south. Good for us though tropical storm force winds (up to 34 mph) extend out 80 miles – mostly to the north. Some increased thunderstorm activity today so could be very heavy rains. Still need to plan for 60 mph, with higher gusts. Wave heights are being forecast at 15 ft., but this is open waters. Still look for winds starting from the NNE early Thurs. morning, clocking around to W then SSE as the day goes on. Try to update again in the morning. Right now looks like Erika will pass directly over/very close to AXA – maybe a little to our north – mid-day on Thursday as a tropical storm, with conditions starting to deteriorate very early Thursday morning. This is a fast moving storm (20 mph) and changes in direction or strength will occur quickly. Any movement to the north will be to our benefit – to the south, not so much. Right now we need to plan for winds of 70 mph with gust as high as 85 mph, with heavy rain in thunderstorms. Some models are forecasting strengthening to Cat 1 (74 mph or +) but remains to be seen. Wind direction should be southerly slowly coming around to the E then NE. Expect moderate beach erosion on both north and south beaches, with waves in the 8 -12 foot range. We are under a TS Watch (St. Martin issued same at 8:00 AM) and expect the AXA EOC to be operational today. Based on past storms, ferries will probably stop running sometime early Wed. and resume late Thursday/Fri. Expect airports (AXA and SXM) to be closed on Thursday. Keep a close watch on this storm, and plan for conditions at least as severe as Gonzalo last year. The NHC is now issuing intermediate bulletins three hours after the complete updates so we will have plenty of information. Next complete update is at 11:00 AM at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ Stay safe. |

No major changes with the 8:00 AM NHC forecast and I think at this point we can pretty much stand down. As of the 5:00 AM forecast, the storm will pass about 75 mi. to our south as a weak tropical storm/tropical wave (34 mph winds or less.) If stays the course, not much at all for us. Unless major change, we can expect at worst stormy conditions and moderate winds and waves. Big question – will it hold together/pass close enough to bring us some rain on Monday? Right now, questionable and several forecasts say no. This is the final update unless some major change. Remember to keep checking http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ . Now we need to watch the next storm which most models show going north of us. Stay safe. |

Just a quick update on the info I sent out earlier. As of 5:00 PM, the forecast track has moved further north and Danny is forecast to pass just south of us – about 20 mi. Winds could now be in the 35-45 mph range, and the chance of heavier rains for us is now increased – possibly the 2-4 inch forecasted. That we can use. - HURRICANE DANNY
|
- From: "Steve Donahue" <steve at anguilla-weather.com>
- Date: Sat, 22 Aug 2015 11:43:26 -0400
|
As of 11:00 am, now a Cat 1 hurricane, and additional weakening is expected to continue. The Wind shear ahead of the storm has weakened a bit, but still 30 knots. This is a tough little storm and continues to hold together even in dry air and wind shear. AXA is now under a TS watch, and with a little over 48 hours to go before it passes to our south by about 35 miles (based on latest), guess we have to prepare for the worst. Based on the current (11:00 am) forecast, we should probably prepare for: (CAUTION – ALL BASED ONLY ON THE 11:00 FORECAST) · Danny to pass just north of Saba as a 50-55 mph TS late Monday afternoon · Winds in AXA building to perhaps 25-35 mph Monday from the south coming around to the NE before dropping early Tuesday. · Seas building to somewhere in the 8-12’ range from the ESE late Monday · Rain??? Forecast says 2-4”, but with all the dry air, could be much less. Monday into early Tuesday. Because we are under a TS watch, I would expect: · ANGLEC to cut power sometime Monday as a precaution. · Major airlines to cancel Monday flights as a precaution into PJIA. (LIAT and Seaborne have already announced cancellations for AXA and SXM) · AXA ferries? As always, continue to check http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ for changes – and let’s hope for additional weakening and a quicker turn to the west…AND some rain, please! |

If you look out your window here in AXA, you’ll see the problem Danny will be facing – Saharan dust. Pretty bad (see below). Plus by tomorrow, it will encounter 40 knots of wind shear. All this will significantly weaken Danny. But the question is how strong will it get before it starts to weaken. Some think it is already a Cat 2, or will be shortly, with forecast for some additional strengthening before it starts to weaken. Hurricane hunters should go out today, and then we’ll know a lot more. The forecast track continues to move closer to us – now passing about 60 mi. to our south as a tropical storm Mon. afternoon. So with the current forecast and tropical force winds extending to the north about 60 mi., right now we should expect minimal tropical storm conditions late Mon. afternoon. The big question of course is rain. This is a very small hurricane, and there’s a good possibility that could be pretty much a complete bust – we’ll see. But on a bright note, we did get 0.25 in. this morning. Nice.

Not a lot of change since yesterday. Biggest change - the forecast track has moved further north, with Danny forecast to pass us about 100 miles to the south vs. 150 miles yesterday (tropical storm force winds extend out about 70 miles). But there is lots of dry air around us and while predictions call for Danny to be a hurricane sometime tomorrow, most models call for it to weaken by the time it reaches the islands Sunday/Monday and encounters dry air and wind shear. Small storms are hard to predict, but now seems the most likely scenario is for the storm to weaken to tropical storm – or possibly even dissipate (long shot) – by the time it reaches us. Of course, the storm could strengthen more than forecast over the next few days and be much stronger when it gets here. As I said yesterday – tough one to forecast – lots of fluctuations in strength the next few days. As always, continue to check http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ for updates/changes. Also, there is a 2nd storm just tracking off the coast of Africa which models call for development and could affect us next weekend. Keep alert.

Wednesday, August 19, 2015 – Like Gonzalo last year, Danny will be tough to forecast. Right now, it is forecast to become a hurricane on Thursday and build to 100 – 110 mph winds by Saturday. However, the dry area to the north of us (and which surrounds Anguilla) could weaken the storm as it approaches the islands. Right now, best guess seems to be weak hurricane passing about 150 mi.to the south of us around Antigua, BUT…the projected track has slowly been moving north. Anguilla at this point should expect moderately severe weather (subject to change) to start impacting us on Monday thru Tuesday. We’ll have a clearer picture by this weekend of how severe and when exactly. Since it appears we will be well within the cone of probability, I expect ferries to stop maybe on Monday and PJIA and AXA airports to perhaps shut down operations late Monday. AXA Disaster Mgt. will probably activate the EOC this weekend. Lots of “ifs” at this point – best to check National Hurricane Center - http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ - for latest forecast intensity/track. Later. |

Anguilla like most of the Eastern Caribbean have been praying for rain for weeks now. Today the capital saw some much need showers that lasted between 30 - 45mins and ranged from light to heavy. The forecast calls for a raining Friday and Saturday. I hope this materializes. A few more days before the official start of the season and I'm happy to hear it should be slow however I am well aware that #ItOnlyTakesOne to make a season bad. PS: Last year was also a slow season.
Until next time remember #ItOnlyTakesOne

I talked to to Anguilla yesterday, they have had two
minutes of rain in the last few weeks, the island is brown and the trees are all
dropping their leaves. Hopefully we will get some rain and not a hurricane, the
cisterns are all filling up with Sahara Sand. Here in the Lake District it has
been cold and very wet, I wish I could send you all some of the rain.
It has not been a good spring for me and the small brown dog, she has not
been well and has issues, also my once beautiful baby sister died last week so
it has been a sad time. I wish you all a safe hurricane season , good
gentle rain and the wind at your back.
A very good night,
JH
