Hurricane Hunters visit Statia

A US Air Force Reserve 'Huricane Hunter'Aircraft visited St. Eustatius yesterday. The Hurricane Hunters are on tour in the Caribbean to inform the public about their mission and work and to raise the awareness on hurricane season prepareness.

The aircraft arrived shortly after noon and was welcomed by dignitaries from Statia and Saba.

After their tour, the crew welcomed about 150 students of the various elementary schools of Statia. Also, some 50 children from Saba were amongst the visitors. They arrived by boat in the morning for this special occasion, together with their teachers and parents.

According to the organizing Office of Disaster Management of Statia, 2015 marks 72 years that the Air Force has supported the National Hurricane Center warning program to help migitate the hurricane threat within the Atlantic basin, by military air crews flying ten state of the art WC-130J aircrafts directly into the core of tropical cyclones to gather data critical for forecasting a hurricane's intensity and landfall.

At 17.00 hours, the aircraft departed from Statia for a similar event today in San Juan, Porto Rico.

Here on Statia things are back to normal. All the offices and shops are open; schools are still closed but this is because it's a holiday week on Statia so they were closed anyway. Except from some broken-off branches there is no  real damage thankfully.

The weather forecast for today through Wednesday midday: Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a few passing showers with risk of an isolated thunderstorm. Winds southwest to South and gentle to moderate; 8 to 18 miles per hour with occasional higher gusts to 24 miles per hour. The sea conditions are fairly rough between 4 to 8 feet. There fore a Small Craft Advisory (Code Orange) is in effect until further notice. (source: Meteorological Department Curaçao)
