Here in Grenada we know Christmas is nearly upon us when the road gangs are to 
be seen everywhere.  These gangs cut the bush, clean the ditches and generally 
tidy up their assigned areas.  It is a brilliant idea.  Funded by Government it 
gives much need money to families and keeps our tri- island State pristine.  
Grenada is remarkable for its lack of roadside litter...the poor man's Bermuda!

This morning I was woken by the demon Coco standing on my chest to look out the 
window and yapping furiously.  Seven people were under my mango tree sheltering 
from the rain....yes Chris, it is still raining here! 
Now, I live in a "dry forest" with no neighbours and access is via a long leafy 
track rather similar to an English country lane.  I was somewhat startled to 
find a road gang ready for action.   I went out to say good morning and to 
offer them a drink...three teas four juices!  Now "tea" is cocoa tea and I'm 
not hot at making that so it had to be juice all round.  The gang was from my 
village Rose Hill and it had been decided that Miz Stalker's road needed a bit 
of a going over!  I can't tell you how smart it looks, I am amazed at the 
difference! 
He -who -does - outside is on holiday, we both needed a rest from each other, 
but I wish he could see what a bit of elbow grease can achieve! I would post a 
photo but the last time I did that I messed up the site.

The heavy weather we had over the weekend has passed through but it is still 
cool and although there is rain around I believe we may have a lovely day with 
a good strong breeze.  Is the bad weather to the extreme north of us pushing 
cool air down to us or is that a rubbish idea?

No I had better not but here we are sailing towards the end of November and the 
mood is lighter and there is more of a spring in one's step.  In my case this 
is partially due to a medication which eases the pain in the knee...but don't 
let's go down that route.  

Since Chris took off for the UK it has rained daily so the Island is green and 
lovely.  We are now into the rainy season not having experienced the dry season 
but not to worry, the limes are big and juicy and the flowers in my garden are 
blooming and colorful....except for those that have rotten roots, but that's 
life you win some, you have to lose some!

He -who -does -outside is a a hive of activity!  I stand open mouthed at the 
fervour until I remember that Christmas is round the corner!  Hmmmm. or maybe 
he reads this blog!  This morning he was scrubbing the concrete steps.....duh!  
Sorry, I'm getting boring but I am all shook up!

So now I have a picture in my mind of all the yachts, shiny and freshly tarted 
out ready to take off for the great adventure and I will watch you as you sail 
past my window, envious of your passion and not totally understanding it.  The 
only singular experience I have had was with Dave Hadley on his beautiful 
yacht.  I boarded with Pat and a friend, clutching my bag of seasick pills and 
we set sail up the Grenadines.  In a moment of pure madness I offered to help 
in an effort to understand more about boats rather than sit around waiting for 
the drinks to be served....aka life in Hong Kong!  
Dave could not bear fool's gladly.  He gave an instruction and that was it!  
"Take Pat and Jeanne ashore in the dingy" he ordered me when anchored in 
Bequia.  I looked at the dingy, it's little engine and thought it can't be that 
difficult. "How do you start it" sez I.  Whereupon Jeanne squawked nervously 
and was quelled by a look from Dave!  What possessed me!  We set off like a bat 
out of hell, I lost complete control, whizzed under anchor chains, around 
yachts, out to sea and back with Jeanne squawking away and Pat calmly talking 
me through the controls. Finally we headed for shore at speed and roared up the 
beach to the applause of the sailors having a drink in the restaurant I nearly 
entered by boat!   Jeanne opted for a lift back with someone else!

So happy times to you all and have a great season...whatever you may choose to 
do.

I don't have to water the plants because it rained quite heavily in the night 
and just to be certain I had a peaceful day, again a few minutes ago.  There is 
a lovely breeze which is so welcome after yesterday's very hot and still day.  
Looks as if Chris has hit the button with today's forecast.  There is a 
definite threat of showers but possibly not until much later.

I still look like a hamster so decided to remain chez moi for a little longer 
rather than be a Halloween fright!  The things we do through vanity!!  But I 
couldn't face the thought of a removable prosthetic.  My dear old Dad made sure 
of that!  He would call one of us children and say "hold this a minute while I 
fix this" or that and we would innocently stretch out a little paw.  Whereupon 
he would put his false teeth into the little hand.  This had two effects, the 
teeth went hurtling across the room and we grew to dread the idea of removable 
teeth!  Ah the effects of childhood trauma on our later years!

That gentle breeze has now turned into a good strong flow which makes me hope 
the Trade winds are coming home.  Perhaps the sargasso weed will now stop 
littering our beaches and suffocating us with its terrible gasses.

Hee, hee!  I got one over on he -who -does -outside!   "What a beautiful 
morning" sez I.  "Now haven't you made a great job of that bed, it looks just 
lovely".  A little smile plays at the corner of his mouth.  "Now what I would 
like you to do today, or to morrow if you are a bit tired". He's just bloody 
arrived so it's an irony completely lost on him.  " take the barrow, shovel and 
rake and cover up the stones along the drive with the spare nutmeg shells at 
the back". 

This is going to require considerable effort........we eyeball each other,  
which isn't a piece of cake as he is six foot something and I am a five six and 
shrinking!   He breaks and shuffles away muttering!  Yippee one to me! 

Yesterday was a miserably grey day but blissfully quiet and amazingly cool on 
the ridge.  We got our usual dose of rain which the orchids are loving, well,  
all the plants are loving the rain. The mosquitoes love it when it stops but I 
pay no heed..I've had the Chickun thingy so do your worst.

As for today it started out very beautifully with all my lovely islands in 
clear relief, the fishermen pounding across the bay and everything looking 
washed and pristine!  I then had three, yes three teeth removed and posts 
jammed up into my head not to mention the anesthesia so the day went to hell 
and the devil and probably accounts for my more than usual nutty ramblings. No 
idea what the weather is doing!  Am in a fog of self pity!

I no longer know when is the rainy season and when is the dry season.  I am not 
alone, the fruit trees have no idea either!
Oop north we have had rain consistently this past week and two thunderstorms in 
the wee hours to boot.  So heavy has the rain been that I now have no phone and 
will have no phone until Lime takes pity on me!  The technician in our area is 
fed up with me but I scarcely know what to do as every time it rains heavily or 
even just steadily my phone goes.  I suspect things have never been right since 
Ivan and Emily even though the roof was replaced twice....I now have more leaks 
than Harry Belafonte's bucket!
As I write big black clouds are rolling in and it looks as if we might even 
hear some furniture removal topside.  Yup! Here they go!  Chris your 
predictions were spot on only faster than you anticipated!
Yesterday there was an "Activity" on the beach.  The police give a permit to a 
dj to bring in massive speakers and for eight hours the gentle homeowners are 
treated to the most godawful "music" put together by man.  I am not being an 
old bat here, it really is awful! The bass thump rattles the windows and as the 
hours pass the dj gets more and more frantic and drunk screaming his head 
off....and there are not too many people around!  This is a National Park 
area...what sort of picture of our Country is this rubbish presenting to the 
rest of you!  Even the rain didn't shut the little.....
I feel a letter coming on!

I have that "morning after" feeling for Bermuda.  I recall falling into a 
troubled sleep when the fury abated, water lapping around the foot of the bed, 
the night watchman on one side and his daughter in the middle.   The dog was 
lying on the floor in a puddle, too tired to care.  I used to joke that it was 
the first time I slept with the gardener!   We finally dragged ourselves off 
the damp bed to assess the damage.  Kelly had come to shelter in the house with 
me as Himself was off island.  The daughter spent the whole storm playing games 
on her phone...cool kid!

Well Bermuda, now the sorry task of of putting it all back together again 
begins.  You are blessed in being a wealthy protected island, we were just a 
penniless little dot in the sea but we had  generous neighbours.

The wind is coming over the mountains from the west and it is cool.  We have 
just had a brisk shower and there's all that cloud on the horizon.  I expect we 
will get some air back once Gonzalo heads further into the Atlantic.

Deep breath and head on to end of November.

We are still very hot but the breeze is stronger today and oop north we had a 
great shower in the night which meant he who does outside could slope off, rake 
in hand and collapse up against a palm tree while she who pays his wages slept 
on.  Not a bad life for either really...

There are rain clouds all around approaching quite fast 'though the day 
continues fair.  Carriacou is very clear and the little islands nearby are 
green and jewel like in the azure sea!  Man, that's poetic.

To day is the big day for Bermuda even tho' the storm has weakened somewhat, it 
is all comparative isn't it.  So Europe next.  Phew!

Good luck everyone in Bermuda and wherever there is danger.

I don't know if Chris will believe me but we had a big thunderstorm and sheets 
of rain oop north in the wee hours.   I wasn't there but when I heard the 
grumble I knew where it was happening!  And it was!  Mr T peed on my lovely 
white chair covers but I can't blame him, he's truly terrified of the storms 
and demoralizes us all except the dratted poodle who couldn't a give a monkey's.

Another very hot almost airless day.....boy those storms harassing Bermuda have 
really sucked the air out of the Caribbean..well, our bit of the Caribbean.

Can't stop shivering when I think what is roaring down on Burmuda.  I know 
their homes are better built, but is that everyone or just the better off.  
It's the ferocious noise that terrifies me.
Phew, how quickly on's world can be turned upside down!  

Somehow I don't feel like being lighthearted anymore.

Thinking about Bermuda and what the people have to face with first Fay and now 
Gonzalo, I recall the apprehension and sick feeling in my stomach when Grenada 
suffered  Ivan an Emily and those Typhoons and hurricanes I survived over the 
years. 

As the storm approaches you become painfully aware of your own fragility in the 
face of nature and as you prepare to protect your home and all therein you know 
that the die is cast and the rest is up to whatever God you believe in and pray 
to for help.

The fear never really leaves your system so that years later your breathing 
becomes faster and the adrenalin pumps through your body when threatened.

Antigua and other islands have been left with a lot of clearing up.   After 
Ivan in 2004 our island took many many months to heal. Gonzalo is now forecast 
to become a category 4 hurricane and to reach Bermuda on Friday.

We hope for you Bermuda...good luck!

Yesterday took the cake for strange weather!  I felt like a candle melting away 
into a saucer!  There was not one tiny frisson of air let alone breeze but when 
I wiped the river of water from my eyes I could appreciate the beauty of the 
day.   The sea was so calm and the sky was a perfect blue.  
Friends came for lunch and the preparation was agonizing, like working under a 
wet blanket, well as I imagine it would be like.   Fortunately it wasn't a 
roast and three veg affair so there was a limit to the damage!   They got lost 
inevitably as I live in a dry forest so I went to guide them in and was stunned 
to see huge black clouds over the mountains to the west..I looked back to the 
North east and it was clear and sparkly.   I received a call from a friend 
asking me if I was ok and I was a bit taken aback..have I been whingeing a lot 
recently, why the concern? Apparently they had had a mother of a storm on the 
west coast...a mere twelve miles away and he knew I was paranoid about 
storms....among a long list of paranoia!   The day continued sparkly and calm 
and my candle got nearer the end of the wick with not a hint of cool to stop 
the decline.
This morning it was cool and pleasant and he who does in the garden said there 
was no need to water the pots as there was a heavy dew!  After five minutes 
jumping up and down and banging my head on the wall and rattling his cage,  he 
watered the pots!
It is hot again but the palm fronds are gently swishing up and down and if you 
don't move too much, it is quite pleasant.  I ain't movin'!

Went into the Big Nutmeg for a couple of days to sort out those little things 
that build up into a mountain if left.  It seemed to be very hot and and still. 
I wondered if there was something going on besides the Chickun thingy.  Chris' 
update told me there were murky things going on north of Grenada sucking the 
air out and that a tropical wave was due to pass through.
 
Kelly, him wot looks after the dogs and house when I head south, was called in 
to do his bit.  Now Kelly has found God...a god peculiar to his Church, not a 
god I'm familiar with.  For instance, watching Cricket is evil....hello? As far 
as I can see the only thing evil about Cricket is Kevin Pietersen and also the 
way it blocks oxygen to the brain.  Anyway, every now and again I have to boot 
Kelly hard to stop the preaching....never tell an Irishman he should give up 
drink.  

I digress, Friday is bible reading day and preparation for Kelly's Sabbath so I 
am very nervy about asking him to babysit.  This was an emergency so he 
graciously agreed but he will leave at 5 am to get dressed for Church.  Boy!  
You should see him when he's dressed up for God!!  Sorry, I'll stick to the 
point.  

At 4. 30 am I was woken by a crack of thunder and shot up in bed!  Shit!  
Chris' tropical wave must be coming through and my four little dogs are 
terrified by a storm...well one is and he panics the rest.  So I threw on my 
clothes and took off like a bat out of hell for the north.  My oh my, isn't 
driving a piece of cake at that time of day!  
There were specs of rain all the way up until I reached St Patrick and home 
when I saw that it had rained really heavily.  The air was fresh and cool, my 
garden looked beautiful and the sea sparkled.  The dogs were more than usually 
glad to see me which made me think we had had a bit of noisy goings on.  Is 
that it Chris?
So this is going to be a long day and although it is very still it is tolerable 
and even ever so slightly cool...naw, that's imagination.

The surf is so high I am unsure if the roaring I hear is approaching thunder or 
the battering of the waves.  Don't worry, lass you'll soon find out!  
Why oh why do I live on a hill top?  Everything Them-Upstairs throw out hits 
me-downstairs so with grumbling all around, wind lashing my coconut laden trees 
and rain at a 45 degree angle what can one do but go back to bed!  
After three days of doing this one becomes introspective and slightly morose.  
Did I not donate enough money to the Rose Hill Cultural and Athletic 
Club....can't be that, they are grateful for the smallest dot;  should I not 
have indulged in the six bottles of up- market sparkling wine.....well that was 
justified really, I think, I needed cheering up while battling the Chickun 
thingy.  I've been kind to the animals and pleasant to those of my 
tribe.....well, perhaps Chris is getting a lickin' too and I know Phil had his 
furniture thrown around so maybe it's not me!
So another stormy day oop north, no sign of Carriacou..they can't complain of 
lack of water these days and we look fair set for a wet weekend.   But who 
knows, hey the birds are singing again and there is a cold bottle of wine in 
the fridge!   Well,two!

After yesterday's mess up with the pictures I wasn't sure if I should lie low!  
Chris has told me what to do in future but I might just leave the photo thingy 
alone and let others do their brilliant bit.  It seems a shame not to add the 
odd picture because we have had some spectacular pictures of Grenada's beauty.

To day is very wet, very windy and the surf is pounding down on Bathway beach.  
The sea blast  is heavy and when I step out on to my balcony I feel as if I am 
on the deck of a ship with the salt spray on my lips...but I am not throwing up 
in the scuppers thankfully!   Someone up above is moving furniture around and I 
hope completes the job before night falls because the dogs will be spooked yet 
again.  It is deliciously cool and far from galvanizing me into activity I am 
curled up with a great read.."I am Pilgrim".  You should try it!

Into the Big Nutmeg for a couple of days because it is so exhaustingly 
beautiful and peaceful oop north one needs to get away to appreciate it 
all....also I needed a fix of Uli's out of this world lambie ceviche !  
So....I missed the massive storm that swept across the north!  Hurrah or 
hurray, someone else had to turn off the electricity, someone else had to 
comfort the dogs and put Tupperware under the leaks. I cocked an ear at the 
distant rumble in the north, pulled up the covers and went back to sleep.  I am 
not totally callus I did ring in the morning to enquire if all was intact and 
if any of the dogs had had a heart attack but all was well.   

The storm passed quickly if fiercely, paid a brief visit to St George's and 
left behind a grey, drizzly sort of day.   As I write there is a strong wind

The worst aspect of this Chickun thingy is that it has destroyed conversation. 
In the Supermarket, in the Physiotherapy clinic everywhere I am regaled with 
stories about Chickungunya....I even add my own bit, not that anyone wants to 
really listen to my pathetic little tale.   I didn't have it bad enough!

And the weather?  It is bloomin'hot...I did want to say bloody, here but am not 
sure if it is allowed, probably not. Fans are on full because there is no 
breeze on the east coast...it must be cooler on the west. The dogs are panting 
more than usual.   My air con died two days ago and although I use it only to 
cool down my bedroom at the end of the day it was the last straw wot broke the 
camels back.  Three flat tyres. Sabotage? Naw, carelessness!  Huge dental 
bill...carelessness? Naw, old age! Leaking roof, tough!  Well it is not leaking 
today!

Carriacou is braced for the Annual Hash and the weather is set fair they will 
have a great weekend!  On-On!

Well no one can complain about the lack of water!  My garden looks like the 
stuff that grew around Rumplestilskin 's tower.  He wot does the garden has 
given up the ghost and ambles around rake in hand looking for a leaf.  And as 
every leaf is brilliant green he doesn't get too fatigued!  
I am amazed at the number of electric storms we have had and this morning as I 
lifted my weary head to see if the sun was shining, there was a great rumble 
down south.  It is raining but it is really cool which is great if you are 
combating the chicken thingy!  
Weather is moving in from the East and it is going to be a thundery, rain 
filled day.  
And don t offer me chicken soup for lunch...I have quite gone off chicken.

Mr Cowan from Martinique seems a grumpy sort of fellow!  If he stopped to think 
for one moment he might see that the blogs from the islands which include a 
little local colour and chat fill in the days we are fortunate enough to be 
storm free and I mean serious storm here.  If we didn't fill in then would Gert 
have to close his site down?  I believe we are all sensible enough to keep the 
lines clear when need be.  No need to smack down the blogger from Dominica 
either, how do you imagine we discover things if not by amassing information 
and theories.  Be kind sir, and enjoy the friendly chit chat.....and by the way

Unbelievable!  Chris-down there, has anyone ever suggested, very sweetly that 
your ability with weather predictions might just have a spooky side?

We started off so beautifully to day, sunny and with a pleasant wee breeze ( 
sorry, the Scots have been on my mind...welcome back incidentally!). I digress, 
creeping in from the North West comes this massive black cloud with grumbling 
interior, to the East all has gone white again and Carriacou is getting rain.  
To be truthful I have been taken by surprise by the dramatic change.  Chris no 
doubt is languishing on the beach, beer in one hand chicken leg in t'other.  
Eat up lad, the whole shbanks is moving your way.

Well after one of those nights it has been one of those days!    The rain 
finally stopped and the leaks stopped but the day has been overcast and 
extremely humid.  I abandoned a trip to the Big Nutmeg for dinner, the prospect 
of returning home in a downpour with possible thunder and lightening swung the 
lead.  Strangely Carriacou is the clearest I have seen it for a long time.  I 
can practically see people going about their daily chores! I wanted to say 
something else but I don't think Gert would approve!
All credit to Lime, the phone works and the internet connection is good.  I 
don't mention Grenlec, they are completely sorted!
The dogs are behaving badly as they usually do in wet weather....they poke 
their heads out the door, look at me in disgust and return to the carpets, much 
more convenient!  The more I rant the worse they get....perfectly 
understandably but I need the outlet and it's not all about them!
Off now for a glass of bubbly and a movie...life does have its little pleasures.

It is yet another disturbed night under the pillows with the dogs!  The rain is 
massive and my roof is leaking.  I know this in spite of being curled up in bed 
because the first leak is on my leg!  The next leak is in the loo where I crept 
to get padding for the box under the leak....don't bother following that line 
of thought ...and there's another leak directly on to the remote controls which 
might cause problems later!  It is beginning to sound like last night at the 
Proms around here!
It was a nasty electric storm. On the scale of 1-10 about a 5.  I'm good at 
this now having been through quite a few in the last couple of months!
I have a massive headache which is either Chicken ganja start or the result of 
worrying about the referendum....who cares about the leaks!  The kids can fix 
those when I'm gone!

With absolutely nothing to add to anyone's assessment of the present weather 
situation, I am writing about the weather!  Well, I feel like saying something! 
 
The past few days have been lovely ( I warned you!).   Very hot, perhaps too 
hot but the nights have been lovely and going to sleep, delicious!  One of the 
loveliest sensations is lying down to sleep, no covers, a cool waft of air 
around you, cicadas and tree frogs playing Beethoven in the bush and honestly, 
does HMQ have it better?!  
When I was obliged to spend some months in UK recently, no, not at her 
Majesty's pleasure, I would ring home and say "stand in the garden with the 
phone and say nothing".  I would then listen longingly to Beethoven's fifth and 
dream of .... 
She -what -does -inside came to tell me today that we have six baby tortoises 
hatched...I have now got a colony of tortoises but sadly the chicken hawks know 
that too and those little ones will be picked off.  I tried to save the last 
batch, made a lovely nursery around the dwarf golden apple tree which they 
shared with Tiny Tim the crippled tortoise but the little sods buggered off!  
Oops, sorry bad language!  They actually climbed out.  Now we have to put up a 
sign that not only says "drive carefully small dogs ahead" but also reads " and 
baby tortoises feeding" because they all come back to get fed!  I think we are 
getting more hatchlings because the ground is very damp and they can break out 
of their eggs.
So that's my bit about the weather..I notice Hong Kong is getting a few lashes 
from typhoons.

We now have tropical depression Six (was 91L) out in the Atlantic (this
has not caused this morning's weather). TD Six should move harmlessly up
through the Atlantic.

Our weather today has been caused by a tropical wave passing through the
area. Although I think the worst has moved off to the West, there does
seem to be a lot of high cloud around. We could still have more heavy
showers, the radar shows a few between us and Barbados.

Well that auld fella in the sky is grumbling away somewhere in Chis' direction 
...I wonder if the storm is moving up towards the North of the island.  It is 
really spooky up here, heavily overcast with  that peculiar light which 
precedes a nasty outbreak of thunder and lightning....oh, oh here it comes!  It 
rained heavily early this morning and now it is winding up for more.  
Batten down the hatches Thor's chariot is approaching fast.  I will have to 
tell the farmers to stop the rain dances now..we are getting plenty of water.
Yikes!  Under the pillows with the dogs.....

Overcast with light showers to day.  
Went into the Big Nutmeg and on the way down St Andrew's had some good showers. 
 Oop north we are very green and the farmers are pleased with the water supply 
from above.  I was presented with a large watermelon which will be shared with 
Tysonne ( the tortoise) and her retinue and progeny.  It is a very sweet melon 
which means it has had the right amount of sun and rain. The gardener has the 
day off on Friday to prepare to take his melons to sell in the Big Nutmeg on 
Saturday.  I must get a next one ( as we say around here ) from him but this 
time I will have to pay...fair do's!
The wind is whistling through the rigging and it is cool and very 
pleasant....the moon is shining through my window; not a bad old place, my 
little island.

One of the advantages of being "older".....I'm avoiding the word "old", is that 
nothing really, really surprises you!  You have seen it or eaten it or heard it 
before.  Because I am an optimist I call that an "advantage".  And believe me, 
you have to grab your "advantages" when they present themselves!  So after a 
very wet, hot and miserable day I woke yesterday to a glorious Caribbean Day.  
Cool breezes, calm waters clear blue skies and cheering sunshine.  Lubberly 
chubberly!   To day is somewhat similar but it is hazy and the sand flies have 
come up to enjoy the day with me ...now what is it I can catch from sand flies? 
  It's not Ebola is it? "Chicken Ganja "? Dengue?
The outlook is cheery....thanks for that Chris! I'll make the best of the day.  
Notice I said "day".  What will tomorrow bring I wonder!

You were right Chris, there is rain to the North of Grenada...lashing down here 
and there's an auld fella grumbling away up there in the stormy clouds and he's 
flashing his eyes around a bit.

 Please tell me you are not basking in warm sunshine down by you!

Yesterday was a bad day for Liat travellers....one poor lass left Dominica at 7 
am to catch a connection to Trinidad to pick up a visa for India which was 
being held for her there.  She was to board a BA flight at 5. 30 en route to 
spend two months study in India.  At 2.pm the flight to Trinidad arrived in 
Grenada.....no one came to meet the plane...we waited, waited, waited.  Finally 
the Liat Manager arrived in a state of of panic and we disembarked! 
As I was driving out of the car park heading home the plane was still on the 
ground!
 
The silver lining in this sorry tale is that the Liat hostess ( or whatever one 
calls them these days) did everything possible to facilitate the speedy 
disembarkation of the Dominican girl and A Trini man who said he would take her 
with his driver to the  Indian Embassy.  Human nature can be as inspiring as 
depressing!  I got off the plane a little less grumpy thanks to those two kind 
people. I wonder if the lass made her flight to India!  The odds were against 
it.

A Liat plane has just gone over....9.15 am.  Was that the 6.15 am to Barbados!! 
 Or yesterday's cancelled flight!!
It is good to be back in our calm, sweet island.....

Leaving the Emerald Isle of Grenada in a Liat plane which cruised between 
rolling dark clouds and the odd grumble, I wondered what the weather would be 
like in Barbados.  I suppose I knew already!    It seems to be sunny all the 
time over there.  And it was but with the odd refreshing shower!  No wonder the 
tourists flock to the island.  It is such a relief from the daily torrents and 
not infrequent electric storms of my chosen homeland.  Nature never fails to 
thrill and surprise us.  Here is an island pushed out into the Atlantic but 40 
minutes flying time away ( don't add the twenty minutes it takes to board the " 
new " Liat planes nor the twenty minutes to disembark or deplane as our 
American cousins would have it ) and the weather is totally different!  Much as 
I love Barbados,  I am quite saddened to see the mess they have made in the 
rush to idolise Mammon.  But the beaches are gorgeous!
I have sent off a photo of sun, sea and sand.....forgot to attach it!

I am now in a "for goodness sake woman get a grip mode"!  This is partly due to 
the non- event recently and partly due to the flash and crack this morning 
which had me rising like Lazarus to unplug my various devices closely followed 
I might add,  by four barking fur balls.
There is actually a story behind my tendency to get, shall we call it "twitchy" 
.  Having lived in various parts of Empire over the years I was caught by a 
natural disaster in each part.  This was bad luck rather than carelessness!  I 
even managed to be in UK for the hurricane of '84
So we arrived in Hong Kong to live and it was no surprise soon after to find a 
Typhoon bearing down on the then colony.  We were ensconced on the 10 th floor 
of an apartment block which to my horror swayed gently in the wind.  Himself 
and his children pottered calmly off to bed while I pored over the weather 
bulletins.  It didn't look good!  I looked at the large sheets of glass 
surrounding the apartment and decided I had to save my precious belongings.  So 
I stripped the apartment to the bones tucking pictures and ornaments into 
relatively safe places.  Eventually I fell into the guest bedroom too shattered 
to care about anything anymore.   I awoke with a hand shaking me desperately, " 
Mum, Mum, come quickly". It was my daughter, " the police are here, Dad called 
the police, we've been robbed, everything is gone except the furniture".   
It took a while to live that one down, it even got into The South China Morning 
Post!  My fifteen minutes of fame!! Or would that be infamy!

It is with us again, that strange white atmosphere which seems to be the 
precursor to nasty weather.  There's a technical term which Gert or Hogan will 
no doubt supply as they blind us with science.  For an ignorant Irishman on a 
hill it means "oh, oh"!
Yesterday Kelly sealed the leaking windows...forget the leaks in the roof, my 
heirs can sort those out, I've lost the battle.  Ah, clear the desk...it takes 
a storm to galvanize me into filing stuff! Finally download some films, aka 
movies as Lime will undoubtedly fall at the first hurdle.
The generator is ready....oh for goodness sake woman, stop panicking !

I have a leery eye on Invest 96 or whatever it is called.  It seems to be on 
the warpath, 35 mph winds seem quite brisk for a start.  We have had two really 
'orrible storms with lightning flashing through the windows and thunder 
rattling  the nuts and bolts.  In fact I am exhausted with the effort of 
appearing brave and calm for the sake of the dogs when all I want to do is 
climb into the wardrobe and cover myself with clothes.  Apparently we can 
expect more of the same on Thursday into Friday.  What I badly need up here on 
my exposed hill is a Priest Hole, somewhere tucked away, not forever mind you 
but while the furies rage...a bottle or two of spine stiffener would help!
Oh well, one can but watch and hope that the dry Saharan air doesn't dissipate 
too quickly and that Invest- what's -it's -name does not cause us problems!
All the same, I think I'll get the spine stiffener on stand by!

Now that was the mother of a storm last night!  I can't believe I was the only 
one cowering with the dogs!  This morning, Carnival Monday,  it is pretty 
horrible up here.  Sounds like a very grumpy god rolling around the sky!  It 
won't daunt the revellers but it will certainly take the edge off the 
enjoyment.  There is a bit of blue way down south so perhaps that grumpy old 
god will see fit to lighten up!
Ah well, being too long in the tooth ( lovely expression, that) I will return 
to bed with the exhausted dogs, toast and marmalade a good book and keep my 
fingers crossed for the two days ahead.

We woke to a lovely sunny day which surprised me as I am a pessimist when it 
comes to weather...due to my few English genes I suspect.  By 11.30 the sky had 
darkened and rain came lashing in from the East ..I could hear the farmers 
shouting with joy!   All the little melon buds were jumping up and down so 
someone is pleased!   I cancelled plans to do outdoorish type of activities and 
rescheduled for tomorrow when Bertha has moved on.  Hopefully she only deposits 
enough rain to gladden the hearts of the farmers in the Caribbean chain with no 
ott stuff, she certainly seems to be galloping along!  I wonder if she will 
develop into a Hurricane when she meets the warm Gulf....hope not!  But good 
luck everyone!
In the meantime we can breathe a little easier here in Grenada.

Returning from an incredible summer in the UK to a humid very hot and stormy 
Grenada did not take the blush from homecoming....but it takes time to adjust 
to the rhythm of life.
Staggering around in a muck sweat and wondering where the said rhythm has gone 
and if it will return, has been the hard bit.  This morning as I gaze at the 
chaotic mess on the veranda and in the garden I think the time has arrived for 
less poetic license and a bit of elbow grease!
I refuse to comment further about the weather...something to do with being an 
Irish witch
(I said witch!)  and not wanting to put the kiss of death on the Atlantic.  I 
leave the analysis to Chris who should be putting his two bits in by now.
