- Congratulations to both Grenada and Barbados at Chelsea.

Both received GOLD at Chelsea Flower Show, well done. Just caught a (too small) glimpse of the Grenada display, on the TV.

Well done - I am sure the climate of the SE Caribbean helps, despite the dry patch we are going through!

I am currently in the UK watching Grenada weather from a distance. I can't see any real rain on the horizon, unfortunately for our garden. Some high cloud drifting off of South America.

Here in the UK it is quite chilly, with some heavy showers between some sunshine. Rather breezy, but warming as the week goes on. Good for Chelsea.

- A couple of blips on radar?

Don't hold your breath, but I see a couple of small blips on radar, which could bring a small shower soon. The Martinique radar shows tham approaching, but Trinidad radar shows them just passing South. I have always suspected Martinque radar is slightly adrift.

But we do seem to be in an area of slightly more cloud streaming across the Atlantic. But it may not have much, if any, rain for us.

But is that a small shower half way between here and Barbados, and heading our way?

Don't hold your breath. It is tweeny weeny, but is it possible there are some more showers possible tomorrow?

The garden and the water tank needs it.

Believe it or not, I typed this 5 hours ago but forgot to send it! The rain did come. Not enough yet though.

It looks, by the satellite and radar images, that we should have less cloud (and hopefully rain) today for the third day of Eng v Windies Test Match in Grenada. There looks as if we will have a stronger breeze also.

There are hardly any showers showing in the SE Caribbean on either the Martinique or Trinidad weather radar. The latest Satellite image shows an area of less cloud out to our East than the last couple of days. But as we all know, showers can pop up at any time, but hopefully will pass through faster. Although a short shower seems soak the pitch for some time.

The word from many of the visiting fans is how much they are liking Grenada. Many I have spoken to have said they will be back for a holiday.

Have good day and let's hope for a result at the end of the match, although it is looking less likely at the moment.

- My first post for some time. Cricket.
  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>

Hi all,

Well I am off to the cricket today. First England v West Indies Test Match being played in Grenada.

We have had some very light rain this morning (Westerhall). Looking at the various web sites, it looks like there is the chance of some more high cloud drifting in from South America which might haze out the Sun a bit. There is currently a very weak band of cloud producing some weak rain showers. This band is just south of Grenada and running East to West. I can see a few showers out at sea.

Further out near Barbados, which currently is 'cloudy' according to the airport weather report, there is a slightly bigger patch of cloud, possibly with some rain showers. It is from this general direction that our weather is coming. So for the first day's play, my guess is (I stress GUESS), that there is the CHANCE of some light, hopefully short, showers as the day goes on. But I am hoping for a full day's cricket.

All the best Devon Smith, your first Test Match against England at home.

- Christmas on the horizon!
  • From: Sally Stalker <stalker at spiceisle.com>

Here in Grenada we know Christmas is nearly upon us when the road gangs are to
be seen everywhere. These gangs cut the bush, clean the ditches and generally
tidy up their assigned areas. It is a brilliant idea. Funded by Government it
gives much need money to families and keeps our tri- island State pristine.
Grenada is remarkable for its lack of roadside litter...the poor man's Bermuda!

This morning I was woken by the demon Coco standing on my chest to look out the
window and yapping furiously. Seven people were under my mango tree sheltering
from the rain....yes Chris, it is still raining here!
Now, I live in a "dry forest" with no neighbours and access is via a long leafy
track rather similar to an English country lane. I was somewhat startled to
find a road gang ready for action. I went out to say good morning and to
offer them a drink...three teas four juices! Now "tea" is cocoa tea and I'm
not hot at making that so it had to be juice all round. The gang was from my
village Rose Hill and it had been decided that Miz Stalker's road needed a bit
of a going over! I can't tell you how smart it looks, I am amazed at the
difference!
He -who -does - outside is on holiday, we both needed a rest from each other,
but I wish he could see what a bit of elbow grease can achieve! I would post a
photo but the last time I did that I messed up the site.

The heavy weather we had over the weekend has passed through but it is still
cool and although there is rain around I believe we may have a lovely day with
a good strong breeze. Is the bad weather to the extreme north of us pushing
cool air down to us or is that a rubbish idea?

No I had better not but here we are sailing towards the end of November and the
mood is lighter and there is more of a spring in one's step. In my case this
is partially due to a medication which eases the pain in the knee...but don't
let's go down that route.

Since Chris took off for the UK it has rained daily so the Island is green and
lovely. We are now into the rainy season not having experienced the dry season
but not to worry, the limes are big and juicy and the flowers in my garden are
blooming and colorful....except for those that have rotten roots, but that's
life you win some, you have to lose some!

He -who -does -outside is a a hive of activity! I stand open mouthed at the
fervour until I remember that Christmas is round the corner! Hmmmm. or maybe
he reads this blog! This morning he was scrubbing the concrete steps.....duh!
Sorry, I'm getting boring but I am all shook up!

So now I have a picture in my mind of all the yachts, shiny and freshly tarted
out ready to take off for the great adventure and I will watch you as you sail
past my window, envious of your passion and not totally understanding it. The
only singular experience I have had was with Dave Hadley on his beautiful
yacht. I boarded with Pat and a friend, clutching my bag of seasick pills and
we set sail up the Grenadines. In a moment of pure madness I offered to help
in an effort to understand more about boats rather than sit around waiting for
the drinks to be served....aka life in Hong Kong!
Dave could not bear fool's gladly. He gave an instruction and that was it!
"Take Pat and Jeanne ashore in the dingy" he ordered me when anchored in
Bequia. I looked at the dingy, it's little engine and thought it can't be that
difficult. "How do you start it" sez I. Whereupon Jeanne squawked nervously
and was quelled by a look from Dave! What possessed me! We set off like a bat
out of hell, I lost complete control, whizzed under anchor chains, around
yachts, out to sea and back with Jeanne squawking away and Pat calmly talking
me through the controls. Finally we headed for shore at speed and roared up the
beach to the applause of the sailors having a drink in the restaurant I nearly
entered by boat! Jeanne opted for a lift back with someone else!

So happy times to you all and have a great season...whatever you may choose to
do.

Clear skies, nice breeze. No rain on the radar and no tropical waves anywhere across the Atlantic. Also the yellow flowering trees are blossoming in the hills. Could this be the start of te dry season (well in the South!).

Off, in a few days time, to UK for a short break. I will leave you in the hands of "Stalker". Even there I don't expect to hear about rain, at least this morning.

Have a good day.

I don't have to water the plants because it rained quite heavily in the night
and just to be certain I had a peaceful day, again a few minutes ago. There is
a lovely breeze which is so welcome after yesterday's very hot and still day.
Looks as if Chris has hit the button with today's forecast. There is a
definite threat of showers but possibly not until much later.

I still look like a hamster so decided to remain chez moi for a little longer
rather than be a Halloween fright! The things we do through vanity!! But I
couldn't face the thought of a removable prosthetic. My dear old Dad made sure
of that! He would call one of us children and say "hold this a minute while I
fix this" or that and we would innocently stretch out a little paw. Whereupon
he would put his false teeth into the little hand. This had two effects, the
teeth went hurtling across the room and we grew to dread the idea of removable
teeth! Ah the effects of childhood trauma on our later years!

That gentle breeze has now turned into a good strong flow which makes me hope
the Trade winds are coming home. Perhaps the sargasso weed will now stop
littering our beaches and suffocating us with its terrible gasses.

Good morning,

A few days since I did a post.

We had a very small shower during the night. I see from the radar that the north seemed to have had a shower also. There is a weak area of small, but possibly heavy showers heading our way. I am not sure if they will survive to reach us, as they seem to be weakening as they get near. Beyond these showers it looks very dry. (ahh rain on the roof, now it has stopped, that was brief).

So on the whole it looks like another nice day.

The Atlantic is free of anything nasty.
Have a great day.

Hee, hee! I got one over on he -who -does -outside! "What a beautiful
morning" sez I. "Now haven't you made a great job of that bed, it looks just
lovely". A little smile plays at the corner of his mouth. "Now what I would
like you to do today, or to morrow if you are a bit tired". He's just bloody
arrived so it's an irony completely lost on him. " take the barrow, shovel and
rake and cover up the stones along the drive with the spare nutmeg shells at
the back".

This is going to require considerable effort........we eyeball each other,
which isn't a piece of cake as he is six foot something and I am a five six and
shrinking! He breaks and shuffles away muttering! Yippee one to me!

Yesterday was a miserably grey day but blissfully quiet and amazingly cool on
the ridge. We got our usual dose of rain which the orchids are loving, well,
all the plants are loving the rain. The mosquitoes love it when it stops but I
pay no heed..I've had the Chickun thingy so do your worst.

As for today it started out very beautifully with all my lovely islands in
clear relief, the fishermen pounding across the bay and everything looking
washed and pristine! I then had three, yes three teeth removed and posts
jammed up into my head not to mention the anesthesia so the day went to hell
and the devil and probably accounts for my more than usual nutty ramblings. No
idea what the weather is doing! Am in a fog of self pity!

I no longer know when is the rainy season and when is the dry season. I am not
alone, the fruit trees have no idea either!
Oop north we have had rain consistently this past week and two thunderstorms in
the wee hours to boot. So heavy has the rain been that I now have no phone and
will have no phone until Lime takes pity on me! The technician in our area is
fed up with me but I scarcely know what to do as every time it rains heavily or
even just steadily my phone goes. I suspect things have never been right since
Ivan and Emily even though the roof was replaced twice....I now have more leaks
than Harry Belafonte's bucket!
As I write big black clouds are rolling in and it looks as if we might even
hear some furniture removal topside. Yup! Here they go! Chris your
predictions were spot on only faster than you anticipated!
Yesterday there was an "Activity" on the beach. The police give a permit to a
dj to bring in massive speakers and for eight hours the gentle homeowners are
treated to the most godawful "music" put together by man. I am not being an
old bat here, it really is awful! The bass thump rattles the windows and as the
hours pass the dj gets more and more frantic and drunk screaming his head
off....and there are not too many people around! This is a National Park
area...what sort of picture of our Country is this rubbish presenting to the
rest of you! Even the rain didn't shut the little.....
I feel a letter coming on!

There are some showers approaching. I can see rain just out to the East. It is also visible on the radar. But there is a much larger area of rain moving in our direction which looks as if it will arrive later this morning or this afternoon. It is already raining in Barbados and Tobago and heading our way.

Hello to everyone
Observing the weather and I noticed that the double tropical wave to our east has stalled out
just like the many that traversed those waters in recent weeks-
including the one that became Hurricane Gonzalo in the northern islands.

The last wave brought flash floods to Grenada just two days ago on Friday 24 October.
The two approaching (currently stalled out) waves seem to be better organized than the last wave
which in turn may spell higher quantities of precipitation in a more uniformed manner,
thus creating more flooding on a more intense scale. And if these waves continue moving at such
slow pace it would mean a prolonged period of these conditions. The next 24-36 hours will tell alot.

- Tail end of tropical wave?
  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2014 07:07:55 -0400
We now appear to be in the last part of the tropical wave. It seems that a typical wave consists of heavy showers or longer at the start of a wave, followed by that persistent drizzle rain then the high overcast sky. We seem to be in that last phase. The radar shows hardly any rain between us and Barbados, and a diminishing area of rain between us and Tobago. It does appear that we could be affected by the high cloud for a few hours. Hopefully a brighter afternoon ?

Looking out from my vantage point, I can see mostly high cloud, with the odd break where the sun is trying to break through. On the eastern horizon, I can see a much brighter area. Hopefully that is what is heading our way. Strangely there are also breaks and blue sky in the distance to the West where I would have expected to see the worse of the tropical wave weather.

There are two other tropical waves making their way across the Atlantic as per the synopsis chart, but they appear to be very weak.

The bays below us turned bright brown with wash-off yesterday, but seem to be almost back to normal today. There was no rain, at least in Westerhall over night.

Have a nice day.

Well as you all know I am an expert at getting it wrong. All I can say is there seems to be lots more to come, although hopefully mostly this not very heavy stuff. But the radar shows that it is spreading out from here to beyond the line between Tobago and Barbados, and this seems to be coming this way, some appear to be heavy. It is all being generated by a slow moving wave moving through the area.

Back to work now.

At last, we are having some good rain. Sorry for the tourists, but our gardens really need it, well at least in the South.

The tropical wave I mentioned a few days ago has reached us.I didn't do a post yesterday, in case I made it go away. At least today we don't have to water the plants.

The current radar shows a lot more rain between us and Barbados, with a drier patch to the South of Barbadod, so it does look as if we could have more rain today, hopefully with some driier patches. But as you know, whatever I say we normally get the opposite!

As for letting you know what I can see outside, I can't even see Ft Jeudy, and barely the land end of Westerhall Point.

No painting for us today!

We had a great day travelling round the island. Bathway was really nice. For any of you that haven't been there for some time because of the rocks in the water (caused by Ivan), they seem to have disappeared. The water was fantastic and the bottom is nearly all sand again.

It does look as if we could have a slight change coming. I see some showers approaching Barbados and heading in our direction. Whether they keep coming is another question. Slightly further out is a tropical wave which seems to have some rain associated with it. Maybe we will get some rain (hope) over the next few days?

Quick one today. We are off to do a trip round the island, including Bathway to see if we can see what rain looks like (also, for one day, to get away from dealing with having to pay excess tax due to cargo airwaybill having the wrong value on it!*) But looking at the satellite and radar, it doesn't look much like rain again today, even in Bathway. But I have been known to be wrong! Have a nice day. Looking forward to a bathe at Bathway, rain or not.

I have that "morning after" feeling for Bermuda. I recall falling into a
troubled sleep when the fury abated, water lapping around the foot of the bed,
the night watchman on one side and his daughter in the middle. The dog was
lying on the floor in a puddle, too tired to care. I used to joke that it was
the first time I slept with the gardener! We finally dragged ourselves off
the damp bed to assess the damage. Kelly had come to shelter in the house with
me as Himself was off island. The daughter spent the whole storm playing games
on her phone...cool kid!

Well Bermuda, now the sorry task of of putting it all back together again
begins. You are blessed in being a wealthy protected island, we were just a
penniless little dot in the sea but we had generous neighbours.

The wind is coming over the mountains from the west and it is cool. We have
just had a brisk shower and there's all that cloud on the horizon. I expect we
will get some air back once Gonzalo heads further into the Atlantic.

Deep breath and head on to end of November.

I was watching the webcam (Thanks Sally). An eerie lull in the eye, with treefrogs chirping. Then all of a sudden between 9:53 and 9:55 PM it came back and the worst half started. The Webcam at the moment shows calm sea, but that is because it is sheltered, on the north side by reefs. It would be interesting to see what the South Coast is getting. The winds are now down to less than 30mph. Time there to clean up -AGAIN. All the best to you in Bermuda.

Now Gonzalo is aiming for the UK. I have already received a Met Office warning for Tuesday - high winds expected.

Here, there is still no wind. The radar shows a few small showers heading our way. One I was watching approach just disappeared before arriving. A last look out and there is a small shower a mile or so offshore and heading slowly in this direction. It would be nice to have just a few small showers and a bit more breeze.

I am mixing mortar today, so could do with a little breeze and some clouds. No rain while the cement is setting - please.

There are rain clouds all around approaching quite fast 'though the day
continues fair. Carriacou is very clear and the little islands nearby are

We had some rain overnight, and I can see showers in the area. Outside there is that lovely fresh feel to the air. There is still no breeze and looking on the radar tthere are only a few showers in the area. But the weather does seem to have returned to the normal direction. So hopefully today could be a bit more cloudy, with some rain, not much breeze still.

No immediate threats to us, but Bermuda looks as if it is in for a battering. The path Gonzalo is taking is still heading their direction, after that it skims south of Newfoundland and then across the Atlantic. If it stays on track then it looks like northern UK is in it's sights (what is left of it) about Tuesday.

Have a great day.

You said it perfectly Sally, the knot in your stomach when even a bad storm comes over, just remembering what can happen.  I’m sure those in Bermuda are now doing their best to make safe their homes and property....  I’m also sure that all the Islands are willing you all good fortune and safety.  We have already seen damage and harm to some of the other Islands and our thoughts are also with them.  During this season I would imagine all Islanders show concern for each other, we all want everyone to stay safe during the season and this year we almost made it.....

Take care all in Bermuda, stay safe.

Thinking about Bermuda and what the people have to face with first Fay and now
Gonzalo, I recall the apprehension and sick feeling in my stomach when Grenada
suffered Ivan an Emily and those Typhoons and hurricanes I survived over the
years.

As the storm approaches you become painfully aware of your own fragility in the
face of nature and as you prepare to protect your home and all therein you know
that the die is cast and the rest is up to whatever God you believe in and pray
to for help.

The fear never really leaves your system so that years later your breathing
becomes faster and the adrenalin pumps through your body when threatened.

Antigua and other islands have been left with a lot of clearing up. After
Ivan in 2004 our island took many many months to heal. Gonzalo is now forecast
to become a category 4 hurricane and to reach Bermuda on Friday.

We hope for you Bermuda...good luck!
Keep safe.

With Gonzalo moving further away, now a Cat 3 hurricane and heading for Bermuda, I was hoping we would get some breeze back. But all signs are we are in for more days with very light breeze. There is still a Low out to our East in mid Atlantic. It is thought it will travel north, so doesn't appear to be a threat. There are very few small dods on the Martinique radar. So it looks like another dry day. But we can always expect the odd shower, I guess.

Please think pray for Bermuda as it looks as if they may get the One/Two first Fay, now Gonzalo. They are still sorting themselves out from Fay.

Good morning all. Gonzalo, now a cat 2 hurricane. It is now moving in a NW'ly direction away from the islands, but Bermuda looks as if it is in it's path. I hope not.

We have our breeze back, although the Windguru site says it is only temporary. Barbados weather radar not working again. But the Martinique radar says we don't have any rain nearby - strange as the airport reported thunder in it's 5am report, we didn't hear it.

It appears that the weather has turned to normal in the northern Windward islands. Not sure about Antigua, there is still no weather report from Antigua airport.

Out in mid Atlantic there is another low, but NHC are only giving this a 10% chance of developing, and it looks as if it will travel harmlessly north.

So, although it may be brief, enjoy the slight breeze we have. Have a good day.

Yesterday took the cake for strange weather! I felt like a candle melting away
into a saucer! There was not one tiny frisson of air let alone breeze but when
I wiped the river of water from my eyes I could appreciate the beauty of the
day. The sea was so calm and the sky was a perfect blue.
Friends came for lunch and the preparation was agonizing, like working under a
wet blanket, well as I imagine it would be like. Fortunately it wasn't a
roast and three veg affair so there was a limit to the damage! They got lost
inevitably as I live in a dry forest so I went to guide them in and was stunned
to see huge black clouds over the mountains to the west..I looked back to the
North east and it was clear and sparkly. I received a call from a friend
asking me if I was ok and I was a bit taken aback..have I been whingeing a lot
recently, why the concern? Apparently they had had a mother of a storm on the
west coast...a mere twelve miles away and he knew I was paranoid about
storms....among a long list of paranoia! The day continued sparkly and calm
and my candle got nearer the end of the wick with not a hint of cool to stop
the decline.
This morning it was cool and pleasant and he who does in the garden said there
was no need to water the pots as there was a heavy dew! After five minutes
jumping up and down and banging my head on the wall and rattling his cage, he
watered the pots!
It is hot again but the palm fronds are gently swishing up and down and if you
don't move too much, it is quite pleasant. I ain't movin'!

- Gonzalo near Antigua.

Hi all,

I have just looked at the weather in Antigua and they are getting 45mph winds from the NE. It looks as if the centre is just about to go over them.

There are a few showers to the South of Gonzalo, but plenty of rain to the North.

Down here it is a calm day, with a weak SSE breeze (although my wind chimes just made a rattle). The sea is calm and in the calm I can see huge clumps of the Sargasso seaweed drifting. Is there any left in the Sargasso Sea, I wonder? Anyone flying out of Grenada today should look out of the window to look for the seaweed (a yellow colour).

There no showers in the triangle - Barbados- Tobago- Grenada, the direction they would normally come from. But with Gonzalo sucking the air from us, from the South, that could be the direction to look. If the breeze doesn't pick up and the temperature rises, then I guess we could get another build-up of clouds over the mountains like yesterday.

Have a nice day.

Hi all, it looks like Gonzalo will pass near Antigua tonight as a tropical storm. The latest position is 120 miles east of Antigua and travelling at 12 mph. We should have no problems here in Grenada.

Hi all,

Just to bring you up to date. The low pressure that is East of Antigua area has now been classified Tropical STorm Gonzalo. This looks like it will pass close to Antigua. The Barbados and Martinique radar are showing a large area of rain centred about 150 miles East of Antigua. As well as it sucking the air from us (well stopping our trade winds), I see it is already affecting as St Lucia with gentle breeze coming from the West and Thunder clouds in the vicinity of Castries. It looks like it will pass through Antigua overnight. I guess this could disrupt local flights starting from Antigua tomorrow morning. It doesn't look as if we will be affected this far south, other than having our breeze taken away. Still it was nice to get in the pool, although even the water in the pool feels too hot. Still that will be nice for an evening dip.

Have a good afternoon everyone. Just a little rain would be nice here. Although I do believe they had some heavy showers, with several claps of thunder, up over the mountains and St George earlier today.

Good morning. Looks like another airless hot day in Grenada. Unfortunately the Barbados radar seems to be out of date. The Trinidad radar doesn't show anything in our area. So now it is the turn of 90L (maybe Gonzalo) to suck the air out of Grenada.

Have a great Sunday.

The tropical wave I mentioned this morning is passing through as we speak. But don't expect much from it, it is very weak. But just off to the ENE of Barbados is a low pressure (90L) which now has a 30%/60% chance of developing over the next 2 days/5 days. But it will pass to the north (hope). The isobars on the NHC synopsis chart are far apart and this means very weak winds. The low pressure to the ENE is probably not helping! I can't see the breeze picking up much over the next few days (nor can Windguru website).

Anyway we now have our new sailcloth fitted to pickup what little breeze there is and aim it across our veranda - that helps.

There are a few (very few) showers around( Barbados radar). So the chance of rain is low (except of course for Bathway area (eh Sally?). There is another tropical wave further out in the ATlantic, but that only has a 10% chance of developing.

Have a lovely (warm) evening and keep away from the mosquitoes!

Went into the Big Nutmeg for a couple of days to sort out those little things
that build up into a mountain if left. It seemed to be very hot and and still.
I wondered if there was something going on besides the Chickun thingy. Chris'
update told me there were murky things going on north of Grenada sucking the
air out and that a tropical wave was due to pass through.

Kelly, him wot looks after the dogs and house when I head south, was called in
to do his bit. Now Kelly has found God...a god peculiar to his Church, not a
god I'm familiar with. For instance, watching Cricket is evil....hello? As far
as I can see the only thing evil about Cricket is Kevin Pietersen and also the
way it blocks oxygen to the brain. Anyway, every now and again I have to boot
Kelly hard to stop the preaching....never tell an Irishman he should give up
drink.

I digress, Friday is bible reading day and preparation for Kelly's Sabbath so I
am very nervy about asking him to babysit. This was an emergency so he
graciously agreed but he will leave at 5 am to get dressed for Church. Boy!
You should see him when he's dressed up for God!! Sorry, I'll stick to the
point.

At 4. 30 am I was woken by a crack of thunder and shot up in bed! Shit!
Chris' tropical wave must be coming through and my four little dogs are
terrified by a storm...well one is and he panics the rest. So I threw on my
clothes and took off like a bat out of hell for the north. My oh my, isn't
driving a piece of cake at that time of day!
There were specs of rain all the way up until I reached St Patrick and home
when I saw that it had rained really heavily. The air was fresh and cool, my
garden looked beautiful and the sea sparkled. The dogs were more than usually
glad to see me which made me think we had had a bit of noisy goings on. Is
that it Chris?
So this is going to be a long day and although it is very still it is tolerable
and even ever so slightly cool...naw, that's imagination.

Another hot day yesterday with little breeze.  I thought the cloud was worth a photo.

Interesting weather today. Apparently we have a tropical wave passing through, yet there is little sign of it. The NHC says:-
THE WAVE IS ASSOCIATED WITH MODERATE SHALLOW MOISTURE. WITH NO LIFTING
MECHANISM IN PLACE AND DRY AIR ALOFT...THE WAVE IS DEVOID OF
CONVECTION.

- well there was sufficient convection to cause lightning at 05:00 this morning which woke me up.  But, looking on the various web sites, there are very few showers dotted around. But don't rule rain out. Not much sign of the breeze picking up either.

The Low that has been north of the Lesser Antilles for several days, rapidly (yesterday) went through Tropical Depression Seven status to now Sub Tropical Storm Fay - this is now heading in the rough direction of Bermuda, then east across the Atlantic?

Nearer to us is an Invest 90L which is about 500 miles NE of Grenada and has a chance of developing. The models are showing a path which could scrape through the more northerly of the island chain (near Antigua).

I have just looked out to see another similar cloud formation to the one at Sunset yesterday. It doesn't look like a tropical wave going through to me!

The weekend is here, have a pleasant day.

  • Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2014 06:17:16 -0400
Good morning,

All the air is being sucked out of Grenada! Well it feels like it. The tropical wave from several days ago has formed into a Low just north of the Lesser Antilles. It now has a 70% chance of developing in the next couple of days as it moves away in a NW'ly direction. even so it has created this lack of wind in our neck of the woods.

We have a tropical wave approaching, still several hundred miles away to our East, it has a large amount of heavy showers to the east of the wave and some smaller showers just preceding the wave. These are visible on the Barbados radar just east of a line from Barbados to Tobago. I would expect to see an increased chance of rain as the day goes on (hopefully, some plants need it). It would be nice if we could get a bit more of the trade winds back, but I am not sure we will see that yet.

Looking outside, the Sun has risen and it is a lovely day. The mountains have little hats on.

Have a nice day.

Good morning. Well the rain never came yesterday, well not down here. I saw some in the hills.

I have just taken this photo, see attached. Yet another batch of Sargasso seaweed drifting past the South of Grenada. I guess it is being spotted elsewhere in the Caribbean, I am interested to hear from anyone that has spotted it. Talking to people, apart from the large amount a couple of years ago, they don't remember ever seeing it before. Is this a sign of currents changing, or has this always happened. Any experts that read this I would be interested to hear what you have to say? How long does it take from breaking off from the Sargasso Sea before reaching our shores?

Today looks hot and dry, well for the morning. The radar shows not one shower in the triangle :- Grenada - Barbados - Trinidad. There are a couple of clumps showing beyond the triangle, but these seem to be diminishing.

The tropical wave that I think I mentioned yesterday has all but disappeared. There is another about 1200 miles East of us, but it is very slow moving and the NHC are not seeing it as a threat, yet.

Good morning,

There is a gentle breeze here today. The sky is clear apart from a few wisps of high cloud.

There is a slow moving tropical wave approaching. It looks as if it will bring some rain to the more northerly of the Lesser Antilles. The Barbados radar shows an area of rain to the north of Barbados, very little to the south. I think we could have another nice day, well at least the first half. There seems to be an area of rain developing well to the SE of Barbados which could reach us much later in the day. Although as usual this time of year showers could come through at any time.

Yesterday was a bit grim. It did brighten up for a while, but then got worse later in the afternoon. Anthony - how did it affect the golf?

At the moment, it does look as if today will be a much better than recently (especially for Ann). There could be some high hazy clouds coming from the SW. But the radar and satellite images are showing a fairly stable condition with no showers coming in from the East at this time. Although there is a clump of showers out beyond Barbados. Maybe we will have the odd seasonal shower later in the day, with an easterly breeze.

There aren't any areas of concern in the Atlantic as I write.

I just had a peek outside. There are some lovely Crepuscular rays (from the pre dawn Sun). Also as mentioned, quite a bit of high cloud, especially to the South.

Have a good Sunday.

The surf is so high I am unsure if the roaring I hear is approaching thunder or
the battering of the waves. Don't worry, lass you'll soon find out!
Why oh why do I live on a hill top? Everything Them-Upstairs throw out hits
me-downstairs so with grumbling all around, wind lashing my coconut laden trees
and rain at a 45 degree angle what can one do but go back to bed!
After three days of doing this one becomes introspective and slightly morose.
Did I not donate enough money to the Rose Hill Cultural and Athletic
Club....can't be that, they are grateful for the smallest dot; should I not
have indulged in the six bottles of up- market sparkling wine.....well that was
justified really, I think, I needed cheering up while battling the Chickun
thingy. I've been kind to the animals and pleasant to those of my
tribe.....well, perhaps Chris is getting a lickin' too and I know Phil had his
furniture thrown around so maybe it's not me!
So another stormy day oop north, no sign of Carriacou..they can't complain of
lack of water these days and we look fair set for a wet weekend. But who
knows, hey the birds are singing again and there is a cold bottle of wine in

Quote from NHC -

A TROPICAL WAVE IS OVER THE E CARIBBEAN WITH AXIS EXTENDING FROM
17N62W TO 7N63W...MOVING W 20-25 KT. THIS WAVE IS EMBEDDED IN A
BROAD AREA OF DEEP MOISTURE S OF 15N AS DEPICTED ON TOTAL
PRECIPITABLE WATER IMAGERY. ISOLATED MODERATE CONVECTION IS
OVER THE WINDWARD ISLANDS FROM 10N-15N BETWEEN 58W-66W.

I think this means we are in an area of cloud and rain. The radar shows this drizzly rain near us, but further west there is heavier rain blobs mixed in with more of this drizzle stuff. This cloudy area seems to be affecting most of the Windward Islands. It stretches out for some distance into the Atlantic. So it does appear tat we could continue with the dull, and possibly wet, weather for a few hours.

Hope you all have a nice weekend.

To day is very wet, very windy and the surf is pounding down on Bathway beach.
The sea blast is heavy and when I step out on to my balcony I feel as if I am

I was woken this morning by some distant lightning, to our east. It appears that the tropical wave I mentioned is passing through our area. There is an area of rain with isolated thunder storms about to pass through, according to the radar. The worst of the weather is to our south, It is moving fairly fast, so shouldn't be with us for too long. But I think it will leave us with some high, maybe drizzly cloud for a while.

The wind has picked up since I woke up. Roof rattling! And here comes the rain.

With our east facing bedroom, it is my job to jump up and close the window whenever there is a shower. Two or Three times over night I jumped up to the sound of rain on the roof to close the window, only to open it again minutes later. The radar shows many small showers heading our way from the East. The NHC say that the next tropical wave is to enter the Caribbean this evening. As far as I can see this is a weak system, but could bring showers. So it looks like sunshine with an increasing risk of showers. Well that is my guess for the day.

Looking outside, I can see a few very weak showers to the East. The tops of the mountains have their hats on.

Have a good day.

There is nothing to report in the ATlantic. The small low pressure is still in about the same place as two days ago, halfway across the ATlantic. NHC does not see any areas of concern for the next two day at least. We seem to be in an area of breezy but dry air. All I can see from here are small fluffy clouds. There is a stiff breeze from the East. There are no showers, worth talking about, on the Barbados radar within 200 miles of Barbados. So it looks like another dry day.

Well after the awful weather Sunday and Tuesday we seem to be back in a period of fine weather.

On Tuesday I gave a local maid a lift. She said the bad weather would be in all day. Having just seen the satellite and radar info, added to that the bright sky coming in from the East, I told her that it would brighten up shortly. How wrong I was and how right she was. Two days of heavy rain was just too much for a couple of our garden walls. I had my own landslide and many hours of work building a dry stone wall all gone to waste. Oh well it will have to be built again.

There has been a tropical wave/low pressure stuck about 1200 miles east of us, in the Atlantic, for some time. Well the NHC have now said that it has a 10% chance of devveloping in the next 5 days. The (hopefully) good news is that most of the models have it wandering in an almost northerly direction. I hope they are correct. There is a middle to high level low north of the lesser Antilles, which could just drag in some high cloud from South America, tomorrow. And as always at this time of year we can't rule out showers.

The reduced posts from me was partly due to me losing faith in anything I say. Then I think of Michael Fish in the UK, October 1987, who dismissed fears of a hurricane in the UK. In fact he was correct, there wasn't a hurricane, but there was a huge amount of damage from hurricane force winds. So if the professionals can't get it right, what chance for me a mere amateur.

Have a good evening. And hope Sally is over her chicken thingy.

  • Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2014 07:45:36 -0400
Thanks for the emails, Phil & Sally reminding me, if I needed it, that my suggestion about the weather was somewhat under estimated. I did say we could get some heavy showers later. Well we did get heavy rain, but they were not showers. Also they came a bit earlier than I had expected. Our beach do ended up with lunch at Umbrellas!

Anyway, let's try again for today. We are still being influenced by the tropical wave. Looking out it is a bright morning, plenty of cloud, some towering clouds to the SE. It doesn't look as if they will hit us, but there are new rain clouds forming just east of these, so it is possible that we could get showers. The radar does show another larger area of heavy rain to the SE of Barbados. This is moving in our general direction.

Oh and Phil, our pool went up by 3 inches. A good time to do a backwash of the filter to use the surplus water, me thinks? Both of the sea inlets below us were brown by the evening.

NHC are saying that there are no area's of concern in the Atlantic at the moment, let us hope that continues.

We saw a lot flooding around the south of the island. There was not much sunlight left by the time the rain was light enough to take a picture but I got what I could. What I saw was - a.) road washout by Grace Lutheran school in Woburn. Some houses at risk as seen in pic. B) rock fall by Sendall tunnel c) several small slides and drains clogged by debris.  I bet tomorrow should yield more reports of slides and floods.

Mr Cowan from Martinique seems a grumpy sort of fellow! If he stopped to think
for one moment he might see that the blogs from the islands which include a
little local colour and chat fill in the days we are fortunate enough to be
storm free and I mean serious storm here. If we didn't fill in then would Gert
have to close his site down? I believe we are all sensible enough to keep the
lines clear when need be. No need to smack down the blogger from Dominica
either, how do you imagine we discover things if not by amassing information
and theories. Be kind sir, and enjoy the friendly chit chat.....and by the way
have you sent your donation to the website yet?!

Unbelievable! Chris-down there, has anyone ever suggested, very sweetly that
your ability with weather predictions might just have a spooky side?

We started off so beautifully to day, sunny and with a pleasant wee breeze (
sorry, the Scots have been on my mind...welcome back incidentally!). I digress,
creeping in from the North West comes this massive black cloud with grumbling
interior, to the East all has gone white again and Carriacou is getting rain.
To be truthful I have been taken by surprise by the dramatic change. Chris no
doubt is languishing on the beach, beer in one hand chicken leg in t'other.
Eat up lad, the whole shbanks is moving your way.

There is a tropical wave approaching the area. As always, a tropical wave could bring the chance of heavy or even thundery showers. From the satellite images, the largest showers are to the east of Barbados and Tobabgo, but in this weather pattern showers can pop up at any time. My guess is that it should be a mostly dry day but with the chance of showers, probably increasing later this evening. I hope this is the case as we have our monthly beach do today. Looking outside, it is a lovely morning, hardly any breeze and there are just a few fluffy clouds around.

Further afield the low pressure in Eastern Atlantic seems to be almost stationary near the Cape Verdes.

Have a good Sunday

- After the storms - overcast
  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2014 07:44:12 -0300
Good morning,

One observation I have made is that often after a storm we seem to be left with high cloud and gentle rain. Can anyone explain the mechanism involved that creates this? Yesterday was such a day. I see from Stalker that The North of the island had it much worse than the South. It seemed they had rain most of the night, where we only had it from about 7am. Here in Westerhall the storm approached from the East, then jumped past us. Although we had thunder, the lightning didn't strike near us. Unlike on the ridge at Woburn. I sat on the veranda and watched several strikes near there and beyond, towards Lance-aux-Epines. It did appear to hit one of the radio masts at one point.

The radar from Barbados still seems to be erratic, and am unable to see what is going on as far as rain is concerned. Te satellite images show that we appear to be in a area of better weather, but there is another tropical wave, out well beyond Barbados, if it continues then that should pass through tomorrow. It currently seems to have some large showers associated with it.

95L is just South of the Cape Verdes and very slow moving. Most models show it moving north with a 20% chance of developing in the next 5 days.

Sally, Hope you have dried out and that you can sort out your leaks. Does the remote still work?

Have a great weekend.

- Plenty rain here....
  • From: Jacqueline Dowden <jacquiedowden at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2014 03:40:02 -0400

The thunder woke me up this morning and continued along with lightning for a few hours but the rain stayed into the afternoon.....  The sheep complained bitterly about being tied outside the garden (on a neighbour’s land who no longer spends a fortune keeping it cut...).  After 4 had been tied out the remaining 8 made a run for it and hid under the front of the house in an effort to avoid him-in-doors and to shelter from the rain.  A truce was declared and him-in-doors gave up and came in for a dry off and cup of coffee.......  He later felt guilty about the first 4 tied out in the rain and set them free to make a bolt for under the front of the house before he could change his mind (he came back in to dry off yet again).

Each time it stopped raining they ventured out for a quick nibble on the grass and retreated back at the first rain drop.....  even the sheep are spoiled, they have a perfectly nice house in the back garden but much prefer to keep an eye on whatever may be happening in the front, as long as they can keep dry (and of course there are much nicer tasting flowers and shrubs to nibble on in the front).

My husband thought I may have the bent over virus (love Sally’s ‘chicken ganja’) yesterday as my back ache was excruciating..... I declared I was not getting it and squashed yet another mossy with great delight!!!!!  Back still hurts but pretty sure it’s nothing more than an aching back.

No rain as I type but as you can see from the time also no sleep!!!!!

Stay safe

Jacquie.

Well after one of those nights it has been one of those days! The rain
finally stopped and the leaks stopped but the day has been overcast and
extremely humid. I abandoned a trip to the Big Nutmeg for dinner, the prospect
of returning home in a downpour with possible thunder and lightening swung the
lead. Strangely Carriacou is the clearest I have seen it for a long time. I
can practically see people going about their daily chores! I wanted to say
something else but I don't think Gert would approve!
All credit to Lime, the phone works and the internet connection is good. I
don't mention Grenlec, they are completely sorted!
The dogs are behaving badly as they usually do in wet weather....they poke
their heads out the door, look at me in disgust and return to the carpets, much
more convenient! The more I rant the worse they get....perfectly
understandably but I need the outlet and it's not all about them!
Off now for a glass of bubbly and a movie...life does have its little pleasures.

It is yet another disturbed night under the pillows with the dogs! The rain is

of thought ...and there's another leak directly on to the remote controls which
might cause problems later! It is beginning to sound like last night at the
Proms around here!
It was a nasty electric storm. On the scale of 1-10 about a 5. I'm good at
this now having been through quite a few in the last couple of months!
I have a massive headache which is either Chicken ganja start or the result of
worrying about the referendum....who cares about the leaks! The kids can fix

- I hear some rumbling from the NE.
  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 19 Sep 2014 06:11:55 -0300
Good morning.

I am early this morning, Off to my NE I could hear some rumbling. And sure enough there were flashes in the direction of Grenville. The thunder seemed to last a few minutes. I haven't heard any for a while. The radar from Barbados is showing times around midnight, so although it is showing heavy areas of rain in that area, I don't know that I can believe the radar. The sky is very dark to the East, and almost black in the direction of Grenville. To the South-west it is brighter. There is no breeze, the palms are absolutely still. So, logic would suggest that we should have some rain (dark skies to our east), but I am not sure. Ahh, I just heard another rumble.

Further afield, 95L, the tropical wave that came off Africa two days ago, now has a 30% chance of developing in the next 5 days. Most of the models predict a North-westerly path. It is currently SE of the Cape Verdes.

More rumbling from the NE! It will be interested to hear from Sally up in that direction, are you getting rain and thunder?

All the best

The Barbados radar is showing numerous small showers, including the small one I can see passing a mile or so south of Ft Jeudy right now. There is a chance that we could pick up one of these showers during the day.

Further afield, across the Atlantic the tropical wave has just left the African coast and is SE of Cape Verdes. NHC are showing that should move towards the NW.

Have a good day.

There is a low pressure coming off of West Africa. It is showing a low chance of developing over the next 5 days, but it is at about 11N and I am waiting to see what the predictions are for it later in the week.

There is a weak tropical wave passing through the region in a few hours time, but any rain seems to be further north. Just the chance that we could get the odd shower down here. A little further out and a couple of days away is another tropical wave. Nothing to worry about, but hopefully it could bring the garden a bit of rain.

Now back to the garden.

With absolutely nothing to add to anyone's assessment of the present weather
situation, I am writing about the weather! Well, I feel like saying something!

The past few days have been lovely ( I warned you!). Very hot, perhaps too
hot but the nights have been lovely and going to sleep, delicious! One of the
loveliest sensations is lying down to sleep, no covers, a cool waft of air
around you, cicadas and tree frogs playing Beethoven in the bush and honestly,
does HMQ have it better?!
When I was obliged to spend some months in UK recently, no, not at her
Majesty's pleasure, I would ring home and say "stand in the garden with the
phone and say nothing". I would then listen longingly to Beethoven's fifth and
dream of ....
She -what -does -inside came to tell me today that we have six baby tortoises
hatched...I have now got a colony of tortoises but sadly the chicken hawks know
that too and those little ones will be picked off. I tried to save the last
batch, made a lovely nursery around the dwarf golden apple tree which they
shared with Tiny Tim the crippled tortoise but the little sods buggered off!
Oops, sorry bad language! They actually climbed out. Now we have to put up a
sign that not only says "drive carefully small dogs ahead" but also reads " and
baby tortoises feeding" because they all come back to get fed! I think we are
getting more hatchlings because the ground is very damp and they can break out
of their eggs.
So that's my bit about the weather..I notice Hong Kong is getting a few lashes
from typhoons.

Good morning,

The radar is showing a large area of showers between us and Barbados. They are moving in our general direction.

The NHC are not showing the disturbance in the Atlantic as a threat to us at the moment, but the satellite images and the synopsis chart do show an area of heavy showers / low pressure mid way across the 'pond'. Edouard (TS) seems to have moved harmlessly up into the Atlantic, well NE of the Lesser Antilles.

So maybe a day of showers today. Good for the garden, but shame it is on a Sunday.

All the best.

Yes we have a tropical storm out in mid Atlantic, but it does appear to be following the rules and travelling in a direction which should take it safely north into the Atlantic.

There is another wave that is just south of The Cape Verdes which is given just a 10% chance of developing.

We had a dry night, I didn't have to get up to close the windows! The radar shows a small thin band of showers halfway between Grenada and Barbados, which are heading in our general direction.

We now have tropical depression Six (was 91L) out in the Atlantic (this
has not caused this morning's weather). TD Six should move harmlessly up
through the Atlantic.

Our weather today has been caused by a tropical wave passing through the
area. Although I think the worst has moved off to the West, there does
seem to be a lot of high cloud around. We could still have more heavy
showers, the radar shows a few between us and Barbados.

Hi all,

Well I don't have to water the new trees today.

I am getting calls asking what is going on. I wish I knew. It looks like a weak tropical wave which is passing through has churned up some stormy weather. We had one near miss (lightning) here in Westerhall. Hope everyone is OK. It was within a few yards of us. I had already unplugged vital equipment when I heard distant rumbles.

The satellite images showed this suddenly building in the last 2-3 hours. The main heavy rain seems to have moved slightly north now (yes Sally, towards you). But it is wobbling and there seems to be a bit more to come. Then it looks as if it will improve.

At least (for the time) the strong wind has eased off. Our cat can stand the thunder, but hates the heavy rain on the roof! Oh hear comes the wind again and getting darker. Still hearing rumbling - unplugging laptop, will run on battery for a while.

Further afield :- 91L is very close to becoming a cyclone 90% over next 5 days. But the good news is that it is following a NW course which should take it up harmlessly into the Atlantic.

Sorry for the delay, I am trying to set up something on the computer and as always things are never as easy as stated!

Have a good day - once the thunder has gone!

Oop north we are very green and the farmers are pleased with the water supply

Tysonne ( the tortoise) and her retinue and progeny. It is a very sweet melon
which means it has had the right amount of sun and rain. The gardener has the
day off on Friday to prepare to take his melons to sell in the Big Nutmeg on
Saturday. I must get a next one ( as we say around here ) from him but this

Very little rain on the radar. We had a few showers in our vicinity earlier in the day. The garden could do with some rain. Please send us some of yours Sally!

Throwing some branches down our garden, this afternoon, I disturbed a very annoyed humming bird. The racket she set up stopped me from throwing any more. But it caused me to see the teeny-weeny nest just 18 inches off the ground on the flimsiest of plants. She eventually went back to the nest and settled down, giving me a very disgusted look. Camera out in the morning to follow her progress with nest/eggs/babies etc.

you have to grab your "advantages" when they present themselves! So after a

Cool breezes, calm waters clear blue skies and cheering sunshine. Lubberly

Good morning all,

The news from Atlantic is that 90L has all but disappeared. But 91L is still there and heading in what appears to be a WNW direction. It is still given 60% chance of developing in the next 5 days, but hopefully this will be in a direction taking it north of our Caribbean islands.

Nearer to home, it is dry, for this time of year. There are no rain showers anywhere in the Barbados radar range of 400km (well the odd little dot). The ITCZ does not show much in the way of cloud either, except for 91L breaking out of it in the Eastern Atlantic. The cloud base is just scraping the tops of the 2000ft mountains. The Sun has risen (I am seeing black dots as I type, having just looked at the it!).

I think it is time to pay the water bill and be put back on the mains (we got cut off while we were away, whoops!).

Now down to early morning gardening.

All the best to all of you.

We now have two area's of interest. 90L the wave that has been mentioned for about a week now. It is almost half way across the Atlantic, very weak and does not have a large chance of developing, also it does looks as if it will go north of the Lesser Antilles. Following on and just leaving the West Coast of Africa at about 9degs N is a much larger system, 91L. NHC are giving this a 60% chance of developing in the next 5 days. Initially it is showing a similar track to 90L. More over the next few days.

Nearer to home: There are very few small showers in the area. There is a larger area of showers showing up to the South East of Barbados, these are several hours away and too early to see if they will bring rain to Grenada or not. But at this time of year we can expect the occasional shower at any time. Especially in the North of the island, do you agree Sally?

Have a great day.

Please tell me you are not basking in warm sunshine down by you!

Yesterday was a bad day for Liat travellers....one poor lass left Dominica at 7
am to catch a connection to Trinidad to pick up a visa for India which was
being held for her there. She was to board a BA flight at 5. 30 en route to
spend two months study in India. At 2.pm the flight to Trinidad arrived in
Grenada.....no one came to meet the plane...we waited, waited, waited. Finally
the Liat Manager arrived in a state of of panic and we disembarked!
As I was driving out of the car park heading home the plane was still on the
ground!

The silver lining in this sorry tale is that the Liat hostess ( or whatever one
calls them these days) did everything possible to facilitate the speedy
disembarkation of the Dominican girl and A Trini man who said he would take her
with his driver to the Indian Embassy. Human nature can be as inspiring as
depressing! I got off the plane a little less grumpy thanks to those two kind
people. I wonder if the lass made her flight to India! The odds were against
it.

A Liat plane has just gone over....9.15 am. Was that the 6.15 am to Barbados!!
 Or yesterday's cancelled flight!!
It is good to be back in our calm, sweet island.....

Leaving the Emerald Isle of Grenada in a Liat plane which cruised between
rolling dark clouds and the odd grumble, I wondered what the weather would be
like in Barbados. I suppose I knew already! It seems to be sunny all the
time over there. And it was but with the odd refreshing shower! No wonder the
tourists flock to the island. It is such a relief from the daily torrents and
not infrequent electric storms of my chosen homeland. Nature never fails to
thrill and surprise us. Here is an island pushed out into the Atlantic but 40
minutes flying time away ( don't add the twenty minutes it takes to board the "
new " Liat planes nor the twenty minutes to disembark or deplane as our
American cousins would have it ) and the weather is totally different! Much as
I love Barbados, I am quite saddened to see the mess they have made in the
rush to idolise Mammon. But the beaches are gorgeous!
I have sent off a photo of sun, sea and sand.....forgot to attach it!

- Large storm passing South of us.
  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2014 06:22:41 -0400
There is a large clump of storms (or is it one big storm) passing between Grenada /Trinidad & Tobago. The thunder is still audible. Looking at the radar this is a large storm cell (my term and probably technically incorrect). The radar from Barbados shows it moving slowly from East to West. It looks as if it could take another couple of hours to pass and we could quite easily pick up some rain and thunder if it wobbles slightly north of it's present course.

A few hours behind this clump is another potentially thundery area. It seems to be following the same path as the one mentioned above.

Both of these areas are part of a northerly bulge in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) as can be seen on the NHC synopsis chart. The chart also shows 3 tropical waves wandering across the Atlantic.

As Jeff Masters has commented, there are (unusually) no named storms active in the Northern tropics (Atlantic or Pacific) at this present time, which is approaching the peak of the season. Let us hope it stays that way.

That is what is feels like, in Grenada, this morning.

The radar shows many showers in the vicinity. As far as I can tell this is part of a tropical wave passing through. Beyond that, in the Atlantic, are more tropical waves. None significant, at the moment. But they need to be watched.

Still, a bit of rain at the moment should do us no harm.

Anyway, the 'British' weather here is warmer than in the UK. And it does appear that the weather could improve later today.

- 97L - the next on the conveyor belt?
  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2014 07:03:38 -0400
Cristobal is now a cat 1 hurricane which is now heading North/North East into the Atlantic. 97L is more than half way across the Atlantic with predictions that it will develop slowly and should pass near the northern part of the Lesser Antilles. There is another weak tropical wave following on, near the Cape Verdes.

Nearer to us is a very weak tropical wave which is showing on the Barbados radar as a band of thundery showers stretching South from just east of Barbados. They are heading in our general direction and, if they persist, could reach us mid afternoon.

We have a bright morning, but hazy. The water vapour satellite images shows high level moisture coming off of South America, I guess this is causing the hazy sky.

Hope you all have a great day.

I am now in a "for goodness sake woman get a grip mode"! This is partly due to
the non- event recently and partly due to the flash and crack this morning
which had me rising like Lazarus to unplug my various devices closely followed
I might add, by four barking fur balls.
There is actually a story behind my tendency to get, shall we call it "twitchy"
. Having lived in various parts of Empire over the years I was caught by a
natural disaster in each part. This was bad luck rather than carelessness! I
even managed to be in UK for the hurricane of '84
So we arrived in Hong Kong to live and it was no surprise soon after to find a
Typhoon bearing down on the then colony. We were ensconced on the 10 th floor
of an apartment block which to my horror swayed gently in the wind. Himself
and his children pottered calmly off to bed while I pored over the weather
bulletins. It didn't look good! I looked at the large sheets of glass
surrounding the apartment and decided I had to save my precious belongings. So
I stripped the apartment to the bones tucking pictures and ornaments into
relatively safe places. Eventually I fell into the guest bedroom too shattered
to care about anything anymore. I awoke with a hand shaking me desperately, "
Mum, Mum, come quickly". It was my daughter, " the police are here, Dad called
the police, we've been robbed, everything is gone except the furniture".
It took a while to live that one down, it even got into The South China Morning
Post! My fifteen minutes of fame!! Or would that be infamy!

96L is certainly shaking its tail feathers all the way down to us in Grenada, just had some serious rain for about 15 or so minutes and accompanying thunder giving us a wakeup call.  (Well probably the dog woke me up but the thunder would have.... J  ).   Here comes the rain again.....

  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>

Good morning,

The disturbance 96L has moved further to the north since yesterday. The centre is now ENE of Barbados and, if it continues on it's predicted path, looks like it will pass near Antigua. We could still get some showers associated with this area of disturbance. With luck our trade winds should pick up again after this system has passed.

06:30 - we have just had some rain and the Sun is shining. The radar sows a few small showers in the area.

The other tropical wave which was following 96L seems to have disappeared.

  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2014 08:21:08 -0400
Good morning Grenada,

96L is still there and making it's way in our general direction. The latest satellite imagery shows a large area of heavy showers and thunder storms in the vicinity of the disturbance. It has, as yet, not become a cyclone, but NHC are giving it a 30% chance of developing in the next 2 days. The centre of the disturbance is about 600 miles ESE of Grenada, and looks as if we should be in it's path, but most of the models are predicting it to travel north of us. Whatever happens, the next few days could bring some heavy rain and gusty winds. The nearest areas of heavy rain showers are about 300 miles from us.

Here in Grenada it is very calm, and has been all night, although we did have some rain. The sun is out, but very hazy.

I will have another look at what is happening later this evening.

It is with us again, that strange white atmosphere which seems to be the
precursor to nasty weather. There's a technical term which Gert or Hogan will
no doubt supply as they blind us with science. For an ignorant Irishman on a
hill it means "oh, oh"!
Yesterday Kelly sealed the leaking windows...forget the leaks in the roof, my
heirs can sort those out, I've lost the battle. Ah, clear the desk...it takes
a storm to galvanize me into filing stuff! Finally download some films, aka
movies as Lime will undoubtedly fall at the first hurdle.

I have a leery eye on Invest 96 or whatever it is called. It seems to be on
the warpath, 35 mph winds seem quite brisk for a start. We have had two really
'orrible storms with lightning flashing through the windows and thunder
rattling the nuts and bolts. In fact I am exhausted with the effort of
appearing brave and calm for the sake of the dogs when all I want to do is
climb into the wardrobe and cover myself with clothes. Apparently we can
expect more of the same on Thursday into Friday. What I badly need up here on
my exposed hill is a Priest Hole, somewhere tucked away, not forever mind you
but while the furies rage...a bottle or two of spine stiffener would help!
Oh well, one can but watch and hope that the dry Saharan air doesn't dissipate
too quickly and that Invest- what's -it's -name does not cause us problems!
All the same, I think I'll get the spine stiffener on stand by!

Good afternoon all,

It looks as if there is a 30% chance of a depression forming just about the time 96L reaches the Lesser Antilles. There are very few predictions at the moment, and they vary from it passing South of us to well north of us. So taking the average, Grenada does look as if we could get some stormy weather in a couple of days time. Also the Sahara air which has helped to protect us is breaking up. Tomorrow morning should give us more idea of where it will go and for us to see if it is developing. There is another tropical wave following on it's heels.

Just to say that I am not saying much as, at the moment, thankfully there isn't much to say! Let's hope it stays that way.

There is a small blob half way across the Atlantic, but low chance of it developing - at the moment, thanks to a large amount of dry Sahara air which seems to be slowing development.

It was a bit noisy Friday night. A few lightning strikes very near to us. For those that are interested. The distance of the lightning from you can be measured by counting seconds from the flash to the thunder. Divide this by 5 and you will get the distance in miles. It is not 1 second per mile as some people think!

A great welcome back on island to our Italian friends, sorry we missed you at the Aquarium. Look forward to meeting up tomorrow.

Hope you have all had a good weekend.

So that was a Tropical Wave was it?  Wow, what a night that was...  The first thunder and lightning was early evening, somewhere around 8-8.30 pm and then it stopped.... until about 10.30 pm or so and the thunder came back with gusto, it was surely the loudest ever and the lightning, well, that lit the sky for the next few hours.  Sally in the North of the Island will not be the only one who flew around the house unplugging everything, I know I did.  I also think this was probably the first time I can remember a storm like that and NO wind.... absolutely no breeze whatsoever.  It was the heat woke my husband not the noise, everywhere it was still, the only slight movement was the tops of my coconut palm but even that was barely moving..... at 2.30 am I was sitting on the veranda watching the lightning show moving away from us and hearing the distant thunder roll trying to catch some little bit of fresh air before trying to get some sleep for the night.   Now at 4.25 am we have a slight breeze and the thunder and lightning have moved on and apparently that was just a Tropical Wave......

Stay safe all.

Had a loud clap of thunder a couple of hours ago and nothing more since so hopefully the weather will brighten up a bit for the revellers, it certainly didn’t seem to rain on anyone’s parade this morning for J’ouvert.

Take care and keep looking East.... 94L is still out there and coming our way....

Now that was the mother of a storm last night! I can't believe I was the only

horrible up here. Sounds like a very grumpy god rolling around the sky! It
won't daunt the revellers but it will certainly take the edge off the
enjoyment. There is a bit of blue way down south so perhaps that grumpy old
god will see fit to lighten up!
Ah well, being too long in the tooth ( lovely expression, that) I will return

We woke to a lovely sunny day which surprised me as I am a pessimist when it

darkened and rain came lashing in from the East ..I could hear the farmers
shouting with joy! All the little melon buds were jumping up and down so
someone is pleased! I cancelled plans to do outdoorish type of activities and
rescheduled for tomorrow when Bertha has moved on. Hopefully she only deposits
enough rain to gladden the hearts of the farmers in the Caribbean chain with no
ott stuff, she certainly seems to be galloping along! I wonder if she will
develop into a Hurricane when she meets the warm Gulf....hope not! But good
luck everyone!
In the meantime we can breathe a little easier here in Grenada.

Here on the SW Coast in Mt. Hope those up north are getting the rain they need and nothing too nasty.....

- Tropical Storm Bertha
  • From: Christopher Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 01 Aug 2014 08:37:53 +0100
Good morning GND. We wake up to he news that 93L has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Bertha. Later is morning, if it follows the predicted course, it will scrape pass just north of Barbados. and early this evening pass in a corridor between St Vincent and Martiniqe.

Currently the worst weather appears to be to the north of the centre of the storm. So unless it changes course, or strengthens further, Grenada should not get much severe weather, but still be prepared for gusty and possibly heavy showers. May I suggest, at least, check for anything that could be picked up by strong winds. Grenada may also notice winds coming from the west for a while a few hours after the storm passes into the Caribbean. This will be more noticeable the further north you are (Carriacou). The NHC are not predicting Bertha to become a Hurricane, at the moment.

I would like to just say that I am no weather expert. I only make suggestions based on what I have learnt since being in Grenada and using information I gather from other websites.

I will try to have another look at the progress this afternoon.

All the best for the next 24 hours.

The latest on 93L is that despite the predictions it is still following the Ivan route, it also does appear that it is getting better organised. NHC are saying that it could become a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm later today. The latest models have moved the predicted path further south. This puts the average path in the ST Lucia/ Martinique area, passing just north of Barbados. But I still think it is worth planning for a route further south.

Disturbance 93L has not changed much since yesterday. It is now about 850 miles East of Grenada and has moved slightly further north since yesterday. Most of the models predict the path to take it in the general direction of Antigua. It currently has a 60% chance of developing into a cyclone in the next 48 hours. I will have another look at it tomorrow.

It has been given about 30% chance of developing in the next 48 hours and 70% over the next 5 days (about the time it takes to cross the Atlantic). What few models I have seen show it turning further north before it reaches us. I will keep an eye on this one. Thanks Andrea for informing me.

Good morning folks,

It seems some areas of Grenada suffered a bit with the storm last night, we have no damage by us and did not lose power at all, not sure about the rest of the Western side.

I think it caught people by surprise because there was no real mention of bad weather coming our way.  I only know there must be problems elsewhere from reading reports on here.  It really shows that we must be prepared for anything at this time of year and Grenada knows about surprise visits of storms from Ivan.

Returning from an incredible summer in the UK to a humid very hot and stormy
Grenada did not take the blush from homecoming....but it takes time to adjust
to the rhythm of life.
Staggering around in a muck sweat and wondering where the said rhythm has gone
and if it will return, has been the hard bit. This morning as I gaze at the
chaotic mess on the veranda and in the garden I think the time has arrived for
less poetic license and a bit of elbow grease!
I refuse to comment further about the weather...something to do with being an
Irish witch
(I said witch!) and not wanting to put the kiss of death on the Atlantic. I
leave the analysis to Chris who should be putting his two bits in by now.

Yes, we had plenty rain yesterday, on and off all day and pretty heavy with strong gusty wind.  We also had quite a bit of very loud long thunder so not very pleasant all round but on the plus side everywhere is looking sooooo much better, greener and more alive.  The wave has passed us now but the sky is still very cloudy and we have had rain this morning....... hoping it will clear in a few hours because I have to venture to town.

Stay safe everyone

Hi all,

I see that you had quite a bit of rain yesterday. Still I hear that everything has greened up now. Everything looks OK in the Atlantic, at the moment. Let's hope it stays that way.

Here in the UK it is overcast and miserable (South London), more rain expected today before hopefully it will brighten up. We are off to Hampton Court flower show, if weather improves.

Be back there with you soon.

All the best.

- First named Storm

So we have the first named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Arthur.  He is up by Florida..... phew!  Hope it just gives some rain to Florida and nothing more  - take care all.

Here in Grenada we have been having quite a bit of rain over the last few days and the farmers are grateful as will NAWASA (water company)be, I expect.  Today is cloudy but not raining, a pleasant breeze blowing and some blue sky..... should get out in the garden but need to find my welly boots first.  It’s surprising how quickly the green comes back with just a little rain, it is all looking so much more alive than it was, it’s even showing signs of life where we had a big bush fire not that many weeks ago.

Here’s hoping for a mild season to come but always expecting the surprise which may come .... take care all.

Well I see the wave has passed us...... that bit of rain I talked about earlier, it stopped!  Very soon after I reported it as a drizzle so sorry St. Thomas there is none to spare.....

I doubt there is an Island that is not suffering from a water shortage, Gran Etang Lake is very, very low, we still have large cracks in the ground and I think this has been the driest I have seen it in 13 years.  Our lovely green Island has been (still mostly is) very brown but just the odd drizzle of rain seems to be helping....... blades of grass peaking through now.  Our local farmers seem to be delaying planting this year which is very sensible with the lack of water.

Hoping for another shower tonight and if possible I will send some your way St. Thomas (if lasts more than a few minutes...lol)

Take care

- Wave on it's way....

Well, certainly feeling the approaching Tropical Wave, the wind has been picking up all morning and is now more constant up here in Mt. Moritz.  We have had steady rain for a while and looks quite set in.... this is of course good news as our water reserves are very low on the Island and the gardens in desperate need of the water.   The heavy rain has eased now to a drizzle but the sky is almost total cloud cover except for a bit of blue towards the north.

Take care all..

Hi Everyone,

We had some rain on and off this morning, sometimes quite hard..... yay!!!  The rain is much needed as Gran Etang Lake is in desperate need of water!!  Still have loads of big cracks in the garden and although there are some signs of green coming back it is still mostly brown...... Ooo  in fact it has just started raining again, not a lot but rain nonetheless.

Take care all.....

- Had a few showers

Hi Everyone...

Yes Chris we did have a few showers over the weekend.... everywhere still very brown and dry....  oh, and burnt.  Yes, we have had fire up in Mt. Moritz.... just for a change and as if people never learn we have had bonfires (they were watched) all day today, which has meant I have been shut up in the house most of the day trying to keep out of the smoke.

Had a rough February, spent just over a week in hospital, gave up smoking......  feeling better but left with lasting problems with breathing.  At least Grenada is mostly nice and clean and fresh air....

Stay safe this season and be prepared..... hope for the best expect the worst.

- Showers running along 12 degrees

Good morning Grenada,

From an overcast but not too bad UK.

I have been watching the radar from Barbados and have been watching an area of showers heading towards Grenada, straggling the 12 degs Latitude. If they continue on the present path and don't fizzle out, then you may get some showers later this afternoon.

- maybe another bunch of showers heading your way.

Good morning,

Well there was a small bit of rain yesterday. As at 5am your time today I see another batch of showers heading towards Grenada. They are currently due South of Barbados and Due East of Grenada. They are making a beeline for Grenada, but a few hours away. No guarantee, but it does look promising for some rain about lunch time or this afternoon. The batch of showers looks like a weak wave, but the synopsis chart is not showing it as one.

Thanks for all those that emailed me yesterday.

All the best

There is a large area of rain between Grenada and Tobago. It keeps pulsating, but looks as if the majority will pass South of Grenada. I would appreciate reports from people in Grenada. I believe there have been some minor showers (according to the airport).

- Weak tropical wave about to go through.

Hi all,

I am currently sitting in a cool but sunny UK. But doing my best to keep an eye on the weather in Grenada.

Time 07:44 GMT 03:44 in Grenada. The weather chart shows a weak tropical wave passing Tobago area and the Barbados and Martinique radars are showing a clump of showers, some heavy moving west from just north of Tobago. How much rain, if any, will this bring to Grenada is still in question as the biggest clump appears to be heading just south of you. But my guess is that there could be some rain about the time Grenada wakes up, currently it looks as if the South is more likely to get it. Maybe some will be a bit heavier than we have had for some time. We need it!

Have a good day,

Hogan of Grenada

- Still under this overcast high cloud
  • From: Chris Bolt <gommier at gmail.com>

Good morning.

We had some reasonable rain over night. Courtesy of a high level low pressure system near Puerto Rico. This is dragging in the moist air at mid to high altitude from Venezuela, thus giving us this virtually Sunless sky, and last night the first reasonable rain (3.6mm or 0.14in) for some time.

So my guess for today is more high cloud, maybe some more rain, I can currently see a shower, out at sea, to the SE.

Hope you all have a nice Sunday.

As at 06:30 this morning we have complete overcast sky. Caused by high moist air streaming over us from Venezuela.

No sign of rain on the radar. Maybe we may get a few drips?

Well looks like just a small shower!

Not enough to do any good. Nothing showing on Martinique radar. Barbados radar 24 hours out of date.

The garden is really suffering now.

Have a nice day.

- Hi all, yes I am still alive and kicking!

Hi all,

Sorry if I have been very quiet recently. Two reasons - one there has been very little weather to talk about and two we have been working hard re-tiling our swimming pool. Just finished!

Still not much to report weather-wise. It has been very dry and many plants are beginning to look a bit sorry for themselves. We are noticing more fire engines rushing along the road below us. The 2 new tank traps (speed humps) must be really slowing them down. But for us, hopefully, no more accidents at that gap. We all wish we hadn't had the need to get them installed, but there were just too many accidents caused by speeding vehicles commng round the bend.

This afternoon a high band of hazy cloud is moving over us, coming up from S. America. Very little sign of any much needed rain.

I will try to do more posts from now on. And thanks to all the people that got in touch saying they had noticed a lack of posts from me. All the best to all of you who read my posts.
