- Rain at last!

Finally a wonderful overcast rainy day!  Apart from a rare shower, this is the first proper rain since the 11th April and everyone is doing the happy dance.

- A break in the drought?

It has been unusually dry this hurricane season and the farmers and gardeners have been suffering.  Last night on the North Coast in the Cabarete area we had a welcome rainstorm with sheet lightning and thunder.  We arrived home at 10.15pm just in time to empty the rain gauge which was at its maximum - 5" in 4 hours!  The rain slackened off after that and the total was just under 6".  A much cooler day today thanks to the storm.

At present it is pouring at the rate of 1 inch per hour, and the wind is shredding my already shredded banana leaves.  The dogs are cowering because of the thunder but at least the drought is over hopefully and the grass will green up.

- Rain, rain and more rain

Since last night we have been having rain showers from light to hard, with dry moments
In between. The streets start to be flooded in some places that usually get flooded.
Nothing to serious yet. We need rain after the drought we had, but not too much!

11 provinces are in green alert today: San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte (en especial el Bajo Yuna), Monte Plata, Gran Santo Domingo y el Distrito Nacional. Risk of flooding and landslide in area close to rivers.
60% chance to evolve in to tropical cyclone.

Let's see how it goes.... To be continued.

Rain arrived at 8:39 local time (EST America). Steady light rain so far.
At this time the system is only yielding light rain in this area.

Here on the north coast we have been dry for so long, that last night's prolonged thunderstorms were a real blessing bringing 1.6 inches of rain.  We could do with more still as the horses and cattle have little left to eat and the fields are brown and bare - most unusual as we are normally so lush and green.

Bertha has turned out to be a tease so far!  At 3am here in Cabarete she should be making herself known, but there is no wind whatsoever and I see that we have had a little light rain to dampen the paving, but so light that I didn't hear it.  Perhaps there is more on the way as we need a gentle soaking to break the drought.

- Bertha ...what happened?

I played golf all day and although you tossed in a very short shower or two...you never came! I thought...ok   you had to get ready! So I waited until now and....nothing other than a light drizzle.

Punta Cana did not have a tropical storm...simply a hoax of a weather system.

- A very dry Dominican Republic!

We are suffering from a water shortage all over the island due to the extended drought, and it is especially bad in the south.  Now I know it is advisable to be careful what you wish for, especially at this time of year, but a little rain would be nice!  Little and gentle are the adjectives that come to mind!

- Wet weather for a change!

Last couple of days tell us that summer has arrived and none too soon, as fields are suffering as are rivers and such. Today was a mix of blustery sunshine and heavy short showers scattered through the Punta Cana region. Looks like quite the blob settling in over Puerto Rico. We could use some of that here!
