- Chantal going into action in Martinique

We are experimenting right now gusty winds over 40 mph with the crazy dancing of trees that comes with it (starring: the coconut trees). Luckily until now we have very few rain falls and that was what we were dreading most.

That situation is expected to last until mid afternoon according to the Martinique met office.

Radio stations are overwhelmed by callers reporting for some minor damages ( electricity poles and tree branches lying on roads).

At noon today The Martinique met office and the Administrative Center have upgraded the vigilance level from ‘yellow” to “orange” due to the latest forecast of TS Chantal as a likely threat to the island.

Forecast on: 07/09/2013 à 12: 00 UTC Latitude 13.6 N Longitude 59.6 W max sustained winds : 57 mph Gusts : 69 mph.

However many people would like Chantal to slow down as approaching the lesser Antilles and finally make it north and thus avoid landfalls..so that there would be no disturbance in the very popular Martinique cycle tour which has started only 2 days ago….:)

Invest 95L did a good job as it managed to get a name for itself in less than 24 hrs. and with a TS distinction

In connection with TS Chantal, the Martinique met office and the French authorities have issued a “yellow” Tropical Storm warning for Martinique for heavy showers, gusty winds and dangerous sea condition. This menu should be served around breakfast time on Tuesday July 9^th.

Météo-France has pioneered early warning systems for meteorological hazards using a vigilance system charting the severity of hazards with 4 color codes (green, yellow, orange and red).

Yellow indicates a forecast of potentially dangerous but not unusual weather

Orange forecasts potentially dangerous and unusual phenomena

Red warning status highlights that dangerous and exceptionally intense meteorological phenomena have been predicted

Early this morning, we were woken up by thunderstorms and some brief showers and gusty winds.

Later today the color code might upgrade to orange or even red, depending on the evolution of the intensity forecasts

- Quick update from Martinique

Several days of on an off rain, sometimes very heavy.  On Thursday we had 
intense rains in the middle of the island and just outside my office we had 
about 9 inches of water flowing past.  Luckily the rains abated and the water 
went down !  Friday was more of the same, Saturday too.  Many sporting events 
outside were put off.  There have been quite a few flash floods, electricity 
and water cuts due to landslides.  163mm fell in 24 hrs on Morne Rouge, a town 
to the north at the foot of the volcano Mt Pele.  For this afternoon things 
seem to have calmed a bit and hopefully we're over the worst.  The ground is 
pretty saturated and any reasonable rainfall could easily provoke more 
landslides.  Let's see what Huricane Season 2013 brings :-)  Matthew
