Rain & cloud since morning, and mid-afternoon temp. now down to about 22°C. Looks like we have a lot more rain to come. Pressure steady at 1009 (up from a low of 1008), and wind now out of the SSW.  Live data here: http://www.pwsweather.com/obs/IGROSISL2.html

Well its now afternoon and its still raining heavily, there has been no let up, one tree down in Marigot due mainly to water, cannot have been wind as it is very still. It also feels very cold - I know that seems a silly thing to say in the Caribbean but it does!

Time to cuddle up and watch a film with a hot cocoa or tea.( and a big bar of chocolate!)

- Isaac
  • From: Chris Reed <reedprincess at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2012 12:14:14 -0400
Well, Isaac's edges decided to start visiting us early this morning (1:30am) and we have seen steady grey skies all morning so far. We have had a fairly steady drizzle pretty much all morning, no periods of heavy rains down here in the south as yet. Looks like we're about halfway through the storm preiod, so who knows what the afternoon will look like. But, at least down here in the south, it's pretty steady light drizzle, nice cooler temps - which are very welcome after the last few sulty days - and grey skies. All in all, an indoor day! Hopefully, the rest of the island is not getting lashed too bad - although from earlier reports, it looks like the north is taking a harder hit than we are. Our thoughts to our island neighbors to the north - I do hope the hatches have been battened down and the buckets and towels are all out to stop the water!
Will update later is things change. Stay safe out there!

- Lots and lots of rain
  • From: Susan Beckwith <suebeckwith123 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2012 09:25:29 -0400
Was woken up about 2am with the drumming of heavy rain on the roof, this continued on and off all night, its now nearly 9.30am and its still raining fairly heavily here in Marigot. I noticed things are quiet as  there doesn't seem to be the steady stream of workers walking down the road to work, all staying home safe and dry. There is no wind but landslides could be a problem as there really is a lot of water running down off the land.

Here in northern St Lucia and Rodney Bay it has been raining on and off pretty much the whole night and morning I think. I was a little bit surprised to see the bad weather starting so early, already after midnight last night with some really heavy rain and gusty winds. Right now it is grey everywhere and misty with a light drizzle. Watch out everyone and stay safe.

Earlier this morning, about a few minutes after 1AM, there was a thunder and lightning show in Soufriere from the large outer band of Isaac.  A light rain shower started about 1:20AM and continued till after 2 when I finally went to sleep.

Current it is overcast, absolutely still (no wind) and there is continuous light rain.

Stay safe and dry everyone!

Hello All
Long time since I posted here but the string of weather systems to the East - TD9, Invest 96, The Next Wave from Africa - has encouraged me to put digits to keyboard.

Jeff Master's analysis is worth reading today and this is a quote from it:

Impact of TD 9 on the Islands

The entire Lesser Antilles Islands chain will have a three-day period of heavy weather Wednesday through Friday
, as TD 9 and the associated area of heavy thunderstorms to its southeast passes through. Sustained tropical storm-force winds of 40 - 60 mph will occur in the islands only on Wednesday, with Guadaloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, Martinique, Dominica, Montserrat, and St. Kitts and Nevis at highest risk of these winds.

TD 9 will make its closest approach to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Thursday, and heavy rains from the storm will affect these islands Thursday through Saturday. Tropical storm-force winds should remain just south of these islands.

On Thursday night, heavy rains and tropical storm-force winds should arrive on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. If the center of TD 9 remains offshore, as appears likely, heavy rains from TD 9 will still be a danger to the country. Rainfall amounts of 4 - 8 inches will likely affect the Dominican Republic Thursday through Saturday, creating flash floods and mudslides. We can't rule out a direct hit on the Dominican Republic on Thursday evening or Friday morning, since the country is well within the NHC cone of uncertainty.

TD 9 is potentially a very dangerous storm for Haiti, where 400,000 people still live outside underneath tarps in the wake of the 2010 earthquake. Heavy rains from TD 9 will begin on Friday morning in Haiti, and last through Sunday. Rainfall amounts of 5 - 10 inches are possible, which will be capable to causing extreme flooding on the vegetation-denuded slopes of Haiti.

Good luck to your neighbours to the North but I am assuming we will get some heavy rain for a period of days here as well - and that is often more damaging than strong winds. After that, 96L is forecast to head well to our North but is too far out to really know at this time. Right now it is a low rider.

Well Tropical Depression/storm 7 did not give us much trouble, just a few heavy squally showers, thank goodness.

Watered all the plants ( so saved me a job!) No problems on the island as far as I know - just waiting for the sun to come back out with the weather forecasters say should happen this afternoon.

- Ernesto was a gentleman

Never have I been more thankful about having nothing to report.  Ernesto was gentle and there is no damage for me to report, thank heavens.

Wind shear and other divine forces kept Ernesto from getting his act together before passing by.  I prayed for no rain, only wind and got more than I asked for because the wind was not as strong as I thought it would be. Again thankful.

An example of how a tropical storm can actually be good for an island: Ernesto picked up speed, blew some air and leaves around (left them in a small pile for easy cleanup), brought just enough water from above to fill tanks (but not rivers) for some residents when WASCO our water utility could not, and left St. Lucia cooler

I wish all storms and hurricanes were gentlemen like Ernesto was!

Standing down from this drill but keeping eyes right.

10:25 am.

Power came back on up here at Cap Estate about 45 minutes ago but the weather
is deteriorating with light rain being mixed in with gusty winds. Looking at
the radar imagery the heavy convection associated with the storm is still to
the East of us and so I expect that we will have at least a few hours of
intermittent rain and gusty conditions to contend with.

So far still remarkably dry considering that we had a tropical storm pass right
over us!

Apparently a gust of 63 mph was recorded somewhere, most likely one of the
airports I would guess. I can't imagine that the sustained winds have been more
than 45 mph at sea level though.

  • From: edgerestaurant <edgerestaurant at gmail.com>

Strong gusts during the night but not so much rain. Nothing much happened here at our house in Rodney Bay except for our big palm tree on the balcony that fell. It is in a very big, very heavy ceramic pot so it must have been a really strong gust.  Sun is now in and out, occasionally strong breeze with some gusts.

Went to bed early last night just in case, got woken up around 3 am strong gusts of wind but no real rain. Woke up this morning to the odd fairly heavy shower and again strong gusts. Marigot Marina filled up yesterday evening and looking down on it I can see no problems. No damage that I know of and no injuries have been reported so far. In fact as I type the sun is coming out!

  • From: Christopher Kessell <kessellc at candw.lc>

Cap Estate 8 am.

Got woken up at 7 am due to the power going off?? Can't see any reason for it
but decided to fire up the generator and it has been running for an hour so far.

The weather is grey and windy, not that bad where I am due to being in a bit of
a wind shadow but not a drop of rain so far! I spoke to a couple of people
south of me including my parents who are at La Toc (just south of Castries) and
it has been raining off and on apparently.

"Ernesto" seems to have accelerated during the night and is now already past us
which is rather surprising. We probably have a couple of hours of strong winds
to contend with as the North East quadrant is still to pass.

All in all its probably a good trial run but lets hope there is nothing more
serious down the line.

The night has been a breezy one with a bit of rain.. but nothing to shout about really. (did not expect otherwise)

It has kept the place nice and cool which is nice after all the heat we have had here.

The only thing it has probably affected is my wife’s garden like the lettuce, chinese cabbage etc, the stiff breeze has probably shaken the plants up and given them a wind burn

Otherwise I do not expect to hear of anything serious out there.

- Getting ready for "Ernesto"
  • From: "Christopher Kessell" <kessellc at candw.lc>
  • Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2012 00:15:48 -0400

I decided to take a bit more than just an interest in Invest 99 and sure enough here we are facing a Tropical Storm!

I thought it was about time that I did some routine maintenance on my diesel generator so I went to Napa and bought an oil filter and a gallon of oil which is now sitting in its crankcase. Fired it up and ran the house on it for about 30 minutes so everything is in order.

I noticed that I had a drip in my balcony roof so I went up and tightened down all of the roofing screws in the general vicinity, I hope that fixes it…

I also ran up the generator at the TV station (DBS) so hopefully if we have a power outage both my home and the station will be prepared.

Here at Cap Estate we just had a brief shower and by looking at the meteogp website radar I can see why. There is a little cell affecting the island but the radar shows that the bulk of the storm is still over the horizon and probably starting to affect Barbados.

Well it looks like Ernesto will start affecting us relatively early in the morning but hopefully will be pretty much over by 4 pm. Its supposed to be a work day tomorrow as the Government made sure that everyone knows that. But if it is raining cats and dogs and blowing up to tropical storm force, they might have to reconsider.

So lets hope for an uneventful storm, we need some rain but not too much of it. A lot of the infrastructure still hasn’t been repaired properly since Tomas two years ago!

Hmm Ernesto is the first to threaten us in Saint Lucia but i do not think it
will much more than give us a stiff breeze and a bunch of rain.
At this time we have a nice breeze blowing here On top of the mountain, and no
rains.
All my antennae are still up and no intention to change that so Ernesto better
behave.
We picked up the loose stuff around the yard just to be safe and that is it..
Heading to horizontal here... Will be back on 3.815 lsb Caribbean Emergency

Winds have picked up a little here in the north of St Lucia during the afternoon and evening. There is a nice breeze for a change coming from a northerly direction as opposed to the usual eastern one, telling us that there is a storm out there with a counter-clock wise turn. It is busier on the road than on a usual Thursday evening (more like Friday traffic), the supermarket was definitely busier with people stocking up water and non perishable food items and there was a queue at the gas station. My tank was almost empty so it hurt a little when I paid for my "full tank".

The 8 pm advisory shows that the center of Ernesto has moved a little north again to 13.3N (Saint Lucia is located in between latitude 13.4 and 14.07N) and the pressure has dropped to 1005 MB. It also says that tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles/185 km from the center mainly to the north and northeast and taking in consideration that St Lucia is only 27 miles long..... Good thing is that it is "only" a Tropical Storm still with winds up to 50 MPH / 85 km/h hour. We continue to check the updates on StormCarib. Big thanks to Gert, Dave and all the correspondents on different islands.

Stay safe.

Current weather conditions - unfortunately the weather station is in my office which we boarded up from 5 PM so I cannot give figures however I can report there is no rain but the wind has picked up a little with occasional gusts (nothing major but enough to cause the soursop tree in the yard to bend and lose some leaves).  I think the wind has blown some skeptics into the shops.  The main grocery store still open was packed with people shopping at the last minute (I know because I was one of them *covers eyes*, I had to get a couple items too).

Storm preps are almost done for me and as you can well imagine that took some time as I decided to move some household items and appliances up to higher ground.  We had our community disaster response committee meeting this afternoon and are prepared to 'respond' after the passage of TS Ernesto.

I think most persons are aware that a storm is approaching.  Now we are all sitting and hoping for the best.

Stay safe everyone!

I know its a little early but its gone very dull and overcast here in Marigot. My main worry if the storm is fairly bad is that we have no water, the local water company have not given us water now for 6 days, so things are pretty dire anyway. So with a storm coming they won't turn it back on as they have problems with their equipment with all the rain etc. The Marina have implemented their Hurricane Plan ( Marigot is a natural hurricane shelter) so everyone is securing boats etc. Lets hope its nothing much, it was forcast to come over us here Friday night, but forecasters have moved that forward now to tomorrow ( Friday) morning.

Keep safe everyone.

Hi Everyone,

Well here we are, rains pouring from the heavens - and no water in the tap, same old thing!

Rain started last night and has continued with heavy showers, dispersed with the odd bit of sunshine, since. I got soaked this morning just walking a few metres down the road as the heavens opened, and thanks to the governments clear up of the roadside - no overhanging trees to shelter under! So here I am sitting at my computer with damp clothes - yuk!

Oh well it could be worse.

Have a good day!

- Making up for lost time!
  • By Chris Reed <reedprincess at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2012 12:57:31 -0400
Well, the rain showed up late last night with a vengeance and seems to be making up for our long spell of dry, dry weather! Heavy, heavy rain started down here in the south around 2-2:30am, along with loud thunder - enough that we jumped up and started unplugging electronics and turning off electrical outlets! The rain wa spretty consistent all night with several periods of extremely heavy rainfall and thunder and has continued throughout the morning. A few breaks - we did see blue sky patches a few times this morning - but they were quickly followed by more rain. The island is definitely in need of some rain - our garden has looked quite limp and the grass has been going brown around the house; this rainfal should take care of some of it! Unfortunately - it is mostly hard, heavy rain and with the ground as dry as it has been, I am sure lots of it is not soaking in but rather running off- I expect we'll see some flooding stories on the news later tonight!
I am fairly sure this will pass by tomorrow - sat pics look like it is moving out pretty quick. I guess we were overdue - it has really been a remarkably dry and comfortable "rainy" season so far!
A grey rainy day is quite welcome right now (although, probably not for our UK visitors, who probably haven't seen the sun for weeks on end!) !
Enjoy your day folks and stay safe out there!

Bad thunderstorms last night over Marigot and much of the island - not sure what time it started but it was still going at 5am this morning and now we look set for a full day of heavy rain showers, the forecasters are telling us that this is due to a weak tropical wave passing over us at the moment. I will look on the bright side and say its good for the garden as a lot of plants were turning yellow due to reduced rainfall.

I understand there is another tropical wave on its way in a couple of days, however it is not likely to come to much which is good, hopefully I can then get my washing dry!

The rains seem to have started, we seem to be getting more than our fair share of heavy showers here in Marigot, good for the garden, not so good for getting the washing done. We also seem to be experiencing a mosquito population explosion, no doubt due to this, I haven't slept properly for several nights now due to the buzzing in my ears and one cheeky so and so tried to go up my nose last night - not good!

Well, folks, we have been having unusual weather this whole year really - why should now be any different? It has been a remarkably dry July so far, at least here in the south of the island. Less rainfall than usual. And we have had some great breezes every day - it has really kept the humidity down and made our days quite pleasant. We are currently looking at hazy sunny skies with a great breeze - all in all a really nice day. Our visitors must be loving this! (we are too of course) We could use some rain actually - grass is turning a bit brown and gardens really needs some sprucing up - plus our rivers are looking a bit dry - but all in all, we are doing Ok on water around the island. Enjoy that beautiful weather and stay safe out there!

- Finally - some rain!

It has been a highly unusual June this year. We have been almost completely dry this June, very little rain, especially here in the south end of the island. Fortunately we had that unusual rain in May which topped up tanks and rivers, etc., because if we we hadn't, we would be in a drought right now! It has been clear and sunny and beautiful all month long with only very short limited scattered showers. Temps have been mid-high 80s during the day and high 70s at night with great breezes all month; it really has been fantastic (but too dry and the vegetation is showing it)
Finally today, the water is falling! Woke up this morning to partly cloudy skies and as the day has progressed, so has the cloud cover. And now - they heavens have burst! All the windows are shut, the towls are out for under the doors and we are having some rain! WhooHoo!!  This looks like it will be short-lived though. I doubt it will continue all through the night, etc. But - this is the Caribbean - who knows!
We are keeping our eye on Invest 97 - still out to the east and looks like it is slowly moving north, but I expect we'll see some rain for it, probably tomorrow night. Right now - no prediction of development, but you never know. Not counting on it though!
This rain is very welcome by us locals here; while I know our visitors want all sunny skies - we need the water for everything else! So - enjoy that liquid sunshine and stay safe out there!
Have a great day!

- Typical Day in Paradise!

It has been a beautiful weekend down here in the South - breezy, pretty clear (although hazy) with only a very, very few showers overnight.Great weather for the holiday weekend - and boy, did people come out to celebrate yesterday! Beaches all around the south were packed with picnics and parties, swimmers and sunbathers, it was impressive!  Today we had some burst showers early this morning, but nothing since about 7am and it has been lovely. There is a light breeze, it is sunny and hot and fairly humid - still hazy, but just some high clouds. Looking north towards the rainforest, there are some heavy clouds, but those will dump on the interior, I expect most of our coastline will be pretty dry - maybe a passing shower, but that's it.
All in all, another typical day in paradise! the official season is just around the corner and while predictions are for somewhat quieter than usual - we all know what predictions are worth!! And while we may not have a hurricane hit us, a lot of rain can be just as damaging. Check and re-stock your hurricane kits, go over your plans with your families, be sure to have your battery operated radio and a car charger for your cell phone - be prepared people!
After that - enjoy yourselfs and stay safe out there!

Hello,

This month has been the strangest yet, with rains – no dry season..  with the first two storm forming all the way up by the USA. Certainly hope that we will have a quiet season insofar as hurricanes go…

Also people make sure you are prepared for the season (Although we ought to be prepared all the time)

Ensure you have your stock of water, food, trim the branches around the house, rid your yard from loose items (great projectiles J), Make sure you know where the nearest shelter is (one never knows eh). Also go over the your emergency plan with your family. Do not assume they know what you think…

Learn the lessons from Tomas, and lets be ready!

Today is a holiday here, and the weather is nice and sunny here right now.

God Bless,

Frans van Santbrink

We have had some amazingly wonderful weather here in the south of the island for the last few days! It has been sunny with strong breezes and low humidity - haven't needed A/C or even the standing fans, just the cieling fan has been plenty. It really has been great. Today we had some overcast skies with on and off drizzles, but even those weren't bad at all - and still a great breeze. the grey skies were punctuated with times of sunshine also - hubby managed to get the lawn taken care of with no rain interference and very comfy temps.
Looks like we'll probably have similar temps and skies tomorrow. Always hard to say though - weather changes so fast and is not even the same all over the island for that matter!
Have a great night out there and stay safe!

- Quick update

Well, as noted, we have had a fair amount of rain recently! Here in the south end of the island (Laborie/Piaye), it has been somewhat intermittent, but yesterday (Sun) was pretty much rain and grey clouds all day long - and it is still going on. Looks like it may break later today, but we are still having the occasional shower overhead. So far - no reports of major flooding - will wait for the evening news to see how true that is. I don't doubt there was some more minor flooding around some of the lower lying areas of the island - we all know the rivers have not been properly de-silted after Tomas 1 1/2 years ago - they just dredge and leave the silt on the banks of the rivers - not very effective!!! Maybe the new government will do something different, but I won't get my hopes up - they've been there almost 6 months and that hasn't changed yet!
All in all, while we locals are glad to see the rain in to ensure our water supply and our crops, I am sure our visitors have been bummed out by the grey skies and wet weather. But hey- it's still hot - the ocean always feels refreshing rain or shine! From the satellite pics, it looks like it looks like whatever this weather system was is moving out and should be gone by later this evening and we'll be back to sunny skies and hit, humid days. Hopefully, things will dry out for Mainstage Jazz this weekend!
Stay safe out there and enjoy your day!
