- Keep your eyes peeled on Invest 97 folks...

Time to stock up on necessities! Not liking the looks of the system they call
97......we can only hope the backlash of Rina affects this low pressure system,
or better still the dry air that is currently surrounding 97 hinders it's
development. But alas, a more moist environment is just beyond the horizon so I
guess we will have to just wait & see how that has an impact.

Rina upgraded to a Cat 2.  10+ ft waves along Seven Mile Beach.  Settled rain water in low lying areas, as well as along the usual spots on the roadways.  Rina projected to turn towards Western Cuba by the weekend, so we're still in for a lot more rain.  I'll upload some video later.  Still overcast, but nice and breezy now.

- Cistern filling

Dave you are so right! Our cistern has been venting from the overflow pipe for over a week! Nice to know we have 12,000 gallons of fresh water if needed. Most of Cayman is soggy, big surf waves coming in from the West. Most of our attention is starting to focus on 97L, track not looking good for us....Don't hang the Christmas lights just yet gang!

Pictures later when I get a chance,

- Residents urged to monitor local situation

Residents are being urged by Hazard management Cayman Islands to monitor weather bulletins in connection with an area of cloudiness and thunderstorms associated with a nearly stationary area of low pressure in the south western Caribbean Sea near San Andreas Islands which has a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next few days. Officials said that past hurricane impacts show damaging cyclones can and do form to the south of Cayman, particularly at this time of year. “Residents should ensure that their disaster kit and disaster plans are up to date and ready, and maintain a high state of preparedness,” a spokesperson for HMCI said Friday evening.

Over the last 48 hours Grand Cayman has has torrential downpours during the day as bands of rain and thunderstorms pass over. The ground is completely saturated and further rains just lay on the ground without being soaked up. Most dry nights though, which is odd. Currently, at 8.15 Sunday morning, the skies are becoming darker as more rain threatens. Stay alert Cayman!

Great news ... there were a few systems (notably Invest 93) in the Atlantic and they seem to be disappearing.
However, there is a new cloud system that just left the african coast very "low" which we will have to keep our eye on in the coming days.

Here in Cayman its a great week-end.  Hot and sunny.  Great for scuba diving which I will be doing on Sunday.

Some recent posts on my blog about life in Cayman!

Cheers

This happened just about an hour ago. I am stuck at work and we could only see it from a distance. Some good photos here:

However, as always seems to be the case, we will get more rain than we
bargained for - which of course means wading through copious amounts of water
;-(

- Official Start to 2011 Hurricane Season starts tomorrow

Title: Official Start to 2011 Hurricane Season starts tomorrow

After 3 years of being un-proactive in reporting on hurricane weather that may affect the Cayman Islands, Im back.  I have a good excuse, Ive given birth to two amazing kids during that time.  Anyway, less about me.

It looks like Hurricane Season will start off with plenty of activity in the Caribbean basin.  SSTs (sea surface temps) are 1% average, which basically means its good breading ground for tropical development.  Jeff Masters of www.wunderground.com (http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1812) suggests there is plenty of rain coming our way.  Additionally, there is a possible tropical wave around the area of the Lesser Antilles.

Watch this space for further updates.

Greetings,

Hurricane season is just around the corner.  I hope everyone is at least starting to think about their kit.
Here in Cayman we have had thunderstorms the last two nights.  In the night of Sunday to Monday, I though we were being attacked by a foreign nation or something.  It was the loudest I have ever heard.
