- 4:30 PM - 26 Oct - after Rina
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>

Ambergris Caye - late afternoon, Rina moving slowly north of us.

Sun going down in the back reflects on the clouds that are remnants of Rina

Lovely skies after the storm

Water was high in the evening - the waves  you see are where we usually walk - by morning the seas were back to normal levels

Mid-morning, Amberis Caye, 5 Miles North of San Pedro Town - Eastern coast.
Rita is due-East of were we sit - and is about 150 miles away.
The sea has a lot of power under it with swells producing sets of waves that we usually don't have inside the reef.  Still, it's not as hectic as a good March blow.
We still have a lot of birds singing and I trust their instincts - we're fine here.

Prayers and positive thoughts go out to our brothers and sisters in Mexico to the North.

- Getting ready for Rina
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2011 13:23:09 -0600
MId-day on Ambergris Caye - all prep for Rina is done ..... time for a photo-op or two.

Boat right where it belongs in a storm.  Coconuts were removed from the trees so no falling nuts will do damage.
Will tie a tarp over the boat tomorrow just to keep things tidy.

Sky with wonderful clouds above, edge of Rita below and reef on horizon with high rollers.

Blue skies to the west.

- Rina

  • Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2011 11:28:22 -0600
On Ambergris Caye the weather is breezy, cool, crisp and clear.
The sun is dazzling and the seas are (as usual) very beautiful.

Rina is expected to bring us nothing more than tropical storm winds, and high
water.
People who live in flood-prone areas have been urged to evacuate, and free boat
passage has been provided to those who wish to go to the mainland for the next
few days.

Boats are being pulled as a precaution.

Schools are closed but probably only because some of the kids are going to the
mainland.

Nobody is in a panic and everything seems very well organized in San Pedro.

From the track of the storm we think we'll get our strongest winds and highest
waters on what is normally the leeward side of the island. This area is well
protected by mangroves and has few homes.

Not-yet but soon-to-be Rina is a close companion for us right about now.
Nonetheless the weather today (and tomorrow probably) has been beyond perfect - stunning actually.  Makes you want to pick a storm center and head right for it - well, maybe.
Seriously - we're aware of the system and paying attention.  Likewise, we're not overly concerned.
Enjoy the day - !!

- Ambergris Caye - RAIN
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 14 Oct 2011 09:36:11 -0600
On Ambergris Caye we had a busy night of thunder an lightening.
The neighborhood weather folks recorded 3.7 inches of rain in the past 24 hours.
The ground is fully saturated, roads are rivers or ponds depending on your
point of view.
It's a day to pay close attention to boats. Auto bilges can cause a false
sense of security - they run hard and drain the battery and then you're really
sunk!

As usual, on the island the rain is at worst an inconvenience, at best a day
off from work and a good excuse to cuddle. I'm going to boil and scrape the
last of my pandanus fruit - a good indoor activity if ever there was one - with
yummy results.

The mainland of Belize, and other areas hosting these big rains have very
serious concerns of flash floods and washed out bridges. NEMO has put out a
flood-alert to all low-lying mainland areas.

Seems like we'll be stuck with this system for a couple of days ...... various
weather sites say that this could "develop" but nobody seems to be telling us
if that means a depression or storm (no big deal) or a hurricane (a cause for
concern).
All eyes as usual seem to be on the US - Belize rates very little concern from
the talking heads up there.

- TD-12 / Ambergris Caye
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2011 09:17:04 -0600
TD 12 moved through our area starting with a wild light show around 2 am today.

Rumbling, flashing and more of same went on until at least 4:30 am, maybe
longer.
Very little rain accompanied this system.
Today is dead calm, cooler, cloudy and moist but not truly raining.
A good day to work in the yard without being fried by a blazing sun!

- actually ......
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 12 Oct 2011 06:19:05 -0600
My mistake --- the rain we're getting here in Belize right now is from TD12-E (not Jova or Irwin).
Mexico is getting a real wallop!

- rain.....
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 12 Oct 2011 05:52:58 -0600
Around 4 am today the skies opened up.  Some thunder just now rolling in.
It appears that we're getting the eastern rain bands of the Pacific hurricane -- strange!
There is not a breath of breeze with this rain - just plenty of it coming straight down.  The reef is 1/4 mile offshore and I can't see it --- in fact there is no way to tell the sea from the sky.

My pandanus has fruited and our queen emma lilies are blooming.  These two fragrances are mixing in a most incredible manner.  It's like a perfume factory outside.

- STILL WET
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2011 08:30:30 -0600
On Ambergris Caye the rains continue.  Off and on, sometimes torrential, sometimes light with a ray of sun illuminating the drops.
Roads outside of the town core are flooded in places.  Many of us still travel up and down the coast by boat, so the flooded roads are not as inconvenient for us as they would be elsewhere.
Cisterms are filling rapidly and swimming pools are overflowing.
Frogs are hatching and croaking, mossies are hatching and buzzing.
My dogs shiver and hide when the thunder rolls, the cat is not the least bit concerned.
We unplug all electronics at night just in case of a lightening strike.

Morning temperature is a very comfortable 78F ........ only a  hint of breeze.  Sea surface inside the reef is like a mirror, and the water temps are in the mid to high 80's.
All in all it's very beautiful.

I can see the bonefish tailing in the shallows just off our beach as I type this.  A young gray fox has taken up residence in the bush next to our house.  Every morning he comes out into our yard for a bit of a frolic.  The seagrapes have ripened and the birds are going mad with joy, as are the youth who love to come by to have their fill.   Recently a full-grown crocodile wandered into a nearby resort and took a rest in their lovely pool - crocodile whisperers came and extracted him.  And so it goes on this quirky, delightful island.

- Ambergris Caye - WET
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2011 11:05:57 -0600
Last night the edge of the tropical wave arrived with some nice brisk winds and
some good rain.

This morning on Ambergris Caye we had about an inch of rain this morning in one
great big downpour.
The weather maps show a large blob of convection above us and I sense we'll be
getting wet for a day or so from it.
Barely any breeze with the storms this morning ..... occasional rumbles of
thunder out to sea.

A good day for a good book.
I recommend James Lee Burke's - The Tinroof Blowdown.

- Irene again
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2011 11:56:55 -0600
Please don't take my earlier comments as making light of the perils that good people face today as a result of Irene.
A big hurricane  is scary and haunting and dangerous.
But since it's coming, maybe best to meet the storm a positive attitude about survival and triumph - the hearts and spirits of island people are strong and will carry them through.

  • Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2011 10:50:22 -0600
All good thoughts are with those of you in the path of Irene.
Stay ashore and keep your heads down.
Strong buildings should be ok in a Cat 3 or even a 4. Been there, done that
....... didn't like it, but things worked out in the end.

- Harvey and AC
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2011 08:29:03 -0600
It's a little after 8 am.   I look at the satellite images and say "wow" - it looks like we're probably getting hammered....... but we're not!
Dark skies, brisk breeze, little or no rain.  Lots of folks pulled their boats yesterday, but plenty of others are still making runs up and down the island inside the reef.
Folks were walking the beach at sunrise, and a jogger just went by.  Our construction crew insisted on coming to work today (sounds carazy, but these guys love to work).  My husband is already bored and wants to got o town on his bike.  I'm discouraging him from that.
Weather bureau said that the center will make landfall about 90 mies south of here.  The wind-field is not too large, and the predictions are that we'll get around 25 kts.
Nothing to worry about up this way.

Listening to the radio this morning, the weather man sounded bored ..... maybe he was sleepy from a night of watching radar?

Belize got a doppler radar station this past year.  The NHC reports you read for our area are partly informed by the meteorologists right here in Belize.

- TS Harvey Update...
  • By Barry Beer <barry at cayecaulkerweather.com>
  • Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2011 07:08:33 -0600

Aug 21, 2011 - 7:00 AM

This mornings forecast for TS Harvey is in now...  Currently, the storm has been downgraded somewhat and they don't think it will reach H1 status now, it will remain as a TS.  There will still be lots of rain and winds may reach up to 70 mph (just 4 mph less that H1 status) as it approaches the south coast of Belize.  Right now, the forecast track indicates landfall just a few miles north of Placencia, although the entire coast in that area will experience high winds and lots of rain.  More later...

Here on Caye Caulker, we've been getting some squalls with wind & rain, nothing serious at all...

- Hauling Boats...
  • By Barry Beer <barry at cayecaulkerweather.com>

HAULING BOATS will be the order of the day over the next 24 hours as Tropical Storm Harvey approaches the coast of Belize. Here on Caye Caulker, will likely be well north of where the storm makes landfall but it's best to be prepared... Pictured here is our boat 'NIKITIS', ready to be hauled...

In southern Belize, they'll be making preparations as well, getting ready for Belize's first storm of the year...

- Friday Weather
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 19 Aug 2011 10:42:45 -0600
The day started out dead calm.  Winds are now picking up a little and are coming in from the south.
We've rescheduled some neighborhood events that were planned for tomorrow.
Government has issued storm watches for the coast.
Other than that everything is pretty normal around here.
Weather shifts from rain to sun and back again.  Pretty!

- 93? Report from Ambergris Caye
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2011 15:44:25 -0600
To br or not to be?   93 certainly has commanded a lot of watching, but not much forming up.  Our MET office advised us to prepare as if there were a depression.  Out in the cayes that doesn't mean much, but on the mainland for people who live in flood-prone areas they may need to move livestock etc.

People in the boat-charter business are prepared to move their crafts tomorrow if need be.  Everybody else is waiting and watching and being pretty relaxed.  Worst case scenarios for this one seem pretty mild.

We've had very changeable weather today - from sunny to cloudy to heavy rain and back to sunny.  Glassy calm seas - barely a whisper of wind.

For now the main event is enjoying the day.

Cheers
Diane Campbell

Hot, sunny, pretty patches of clouds, calm seas, tides relatively low.
When I say "hot", I mean in the upper 80's ...... nothing like the heat in the US these days.
Come on down to the tropics to cool off !!

- Tropical Wave
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2011 13:05:04 -0600
We're having a little bit of everything today - some sun, some hot, some cool, some rain, some wind, some calm.
The tropical wave is over us, on us, in front of us, near us ......... grateful it's just a wave.
Best thoughts to those who will soon meet up with Emily.  Let's hope she's a gentle thing.

Cheers from Ambergris Caye ..

- rains!
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2011 10:00:58 -0600
Although the Official weather forecast says mostly sunny with some showery
spells, they must be talking about another part of Belize. Ambergris Caye is
softly stormy, good rains, not so much wind. Cooler temps.
An excellent day to watch the plants grow.

Today dawned beautiful, hot and very very still. By 8am it was already 87 F
and it's stayed about that temp all day.

The dead calm weather was probably due to the as yet unformed Don lurking north
of us. Now that he's a reality and has places to go we're getting a breeze
again.

I notice that TS Don is presently near the island of Holbox. For some reason
that island has my imagination as a place to visit ---- I also notice that it
is in the path of quite a few storms. Maybe we can find a storm correspondent
from the mystical Holbox?

- Windy Weather on Caye Caulker...
  • By Barry Beer <barry at cayecaulkerweather.com>
  • Date: Wed, 29 Jun 2011 12:18:39 -0600
Wow, it's WINDY here along the coast of Belize!  Gusts to 34 mph within this last hour here on Caye Caulker...

We don't often get a lot of whitecaps inside of the reef but we have lots of them today.  Things are dry here as well but we DID get some rain last night, about 0.1 inches.  Not much, but it was enough to settle the dust a bit...

We hope TS Arlene is kind to our friends on the coast of Mexico, batten down the hatches!

- windy
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 29 Jun 2011 11:33:56 -0600
On Ambergris Caye it is WINDY. VERY. Arlene must be pulling air from all
over into her ample bosom. Wild waves to go with the wind. Only the best of
the kite-surfers are on the water today.

Last night we had a great thunder and lightning show but just a little rain.
What rain we did get blew sideways and up and made a righteous racket on the
windows and doors. Power went off for a while during the height of the storm.

It's certainly beautiful and remarkably energizing but there is not a lot you
can do on a day like today other than just bask in the power of nature. No
complaints on that though.

- windy
  • By Diane Campbell <dcampbellbz at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2011 07:25:24 -0600
Ambergris Caye - Tropical wave brings very strong winds to the northern part of
the country, specifically right here in the mid-section of Ambergris Caye.
Waves have topped the reef giving us some rollers inside, and winds are gusting
to 30MPH or more.
We'd hoped to get some good rain out of this system, but the skies are only
dusted with light clouds. There was a little lightening last night but no rain
in our immediate area. The wind is noisy, the seas are rough and the tide is
high. A good day for ......... kayaking in the lagoons on the leeward side of
the island!

- Start of the 2011 Hurricane Season...
  • By Barry Beer <barry at cayecaulkerweather.com>
  • Date: Wed, 1 Jun 2011 14:15:04 -0600
Hello from Caye Caulker in Belize,
It's hard to believe it's the start of another Hurricane Season and it looks like this may be another active year.
Here in Belize last year, we had two storms make landfall, one Cat 1 and another strong Tropical Storm.  Generally speaking, we are pretty lucky here, with the vast majority of systems turning north before they get too close to us.
As usual, when we have significant weather here on Caye Caulker (a small island 12 miles off the coast of Belize)  I'll be posting to our website at www.CayeCaulkerWeather.com as well as posting here.
Stay safe everyone and be sure to make your preparations early... :)
Bye for now,
Barry Beer
