Title: Cancun, Playa Del Carmen & The Riviera Maya
I figured since everyone has their eyes to the weather with Former Hurricane Tomas still in the Caribbean as a Tropical Storm (thanks to some upper level shear) moving to the west but expected to regain strength in the next 48 hours and begin to turn to the northwest, North and then Northeast.
Here in Playa Del Carmen, Cancun and the Riviera Maya we are enjoying incredible weather with sunny skies temperatures in the low 80’s and humidity around 70%. We have had 3 nights of overnight showers to keep things cool but no sustained rain or showers.
We continue to look forward to clear skies and nice temperatures for the rest of the week.

- Cancun - Riviera Maya and Cozumel Update

Title: Cancun - Riviera Maya and Cozumel Update
Well as all of you know Hurricane Paula popped up over the last 24 hours, just a tropical wave / Low Pressure yesterday morning at 9:00 am and today at 9 AM a Category 1 Hurricane Moving northwest towards Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula.
We were just updated on the intensity of Paula, now a category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph / 160 kph extending about 10 miles from the center of circulation. Tropical Storm force winds extending 100 kilometers from her center of circulation and continuing to move Northwest.
We are seeing rain and slight wind increases now here in the Riviera Maya, a few hours ago we couldn’t see Cozumel Island but now we can see parts of the Island outline from here.
There is a Hurricane Warning in effect for Mexicos Caribbean Coast from Chetumal to Cabo Catoche north of Cancun and a Tropical Storm Warning from Cabo Catoche to San Felipe in the State of Yucatan.
Preparations are underway here in Playa Del Carmen and the Riviera Maya to protect the tourists. We are installed now at the Illusion Boutique Hotel located 50 meters from the beach between the famous 5th ave and the Beach here with an incredible view from the rooftop honeymoon suite where the hotel has given us permission to set up our camaras to film and shoot photos throughout the entire event. We are uploading live weather report to the Mexico Travel Magazine website and we will try to keep photos updated there as well.
The hotels have been instructed to go into the governments tourism webpage database and update their guests information so that families and friends can easily locate where they are in the event that the storm hits with alot of force knocking out local communications.
We hope to be updating throughout provided that we have internet and electricity.

- Cancun . Riviera Maya Mexico Weather

Title: Cancun . Riviera Maya Mexico Weather
Good Evening All,
Well we are indeed watching invest 95 down there not far from the ABC Islands and moving west towards Central America. Spaghetti Maps today in the morning had this Low Pressure system moving into Nicaragua on Saturday and then moving north from there either entering the Yucatan Peninsula or Skipping along the coast before turing north over Cuba. Right now Ensemble computer Models have this all over the place which is normal for this phase of the low pressure system when error margin can be as much as 50% so we will keep a watchful eye on what this may do.
For the today we had overnight thunderstorms and heavy downpours in Playa Del Carmen and the area north and south of us. In the morning we also continued to scattered showers and thundershowers with no heavy downpours but the day remained mostly overcast with some breaks of sun (completely the opposite of last week). Right now we have some showers in the area from Cancun to Puerto Aventuras and we also have lower temperatures wit the current temperature here in Playa Del Carmen at 79ºF or 29ºC and overcast.
Tomorrow is looking a little better but not 100% so we will keep an eye on Invest 95 and see what evolves, looks like it could become a Tropical Depression tonight or in the morning Thursday.
Warm Regards to all

Title: Hurricane Karl
Good Afternoon all,
Well I am just 4 days post surgery and still not seeing well and not able to leave the house so I am reporting here based on my staff observations and unfortunately we cannot travel to the scene of Hurricane Karl to bring you live information so here is what WE KNOW.
Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and All of the Caribbean Coast of Mexico again dodged the perverbial Bullet as tropical storm Karl visited the far south of Quintana Roo as I predicted it would staying south of the Tourist Destinations and moving west across the Yucatan Peninsula as a tropical depression before emerging into the Gulf of Mexico where he emerged and regained strength before setting sights on an already flooded, evacuated and suffering state of Veracruz on the Gulf Coast. For those who have followed the news The states of Tabasco, Chiapas and Veracruz have been underwater for the last 15 days at least and water was still rising before Karl decided to make a visit to the area later today. Hurricane Karl is now a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 120 mph / 195 kph and is going to make landfall in Veracruz near the resort communities of Boca del Rio and Puerto Veracruz during this long holiday weekend where normally thousands of Mexicans would have flocked for the holiday weekend.
It was expected that Karl could have increased strength to Category 4 before making landfall but I see that as very unlikely and actually looking at the satellite images I see that the Center of Circulation is already over Veracruz Port and moving towards Cordoba and Puebla which means that Karl should start to weaken abit now and more as he encounters the beautiful mountains of Veracruz heading towards Puebla, Tlaxcala and Mexico City.
Here in Playa Del Carmen, the Riviera Maya and areas nearby including the Islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres we have a BEAUTIFUL DAY with mostly sunny skies, warm temperatures and as a result of Karl we only had some rain for the day Wednesday to Thursday overnight and Thursday during the day. No flooding, no damage and no delays.
Warm Regards

- Tropical Storm Karl - Yucatan Peninsula

Title: Tropical Storm Karl - Yucatan Peninsula
Tropical Storm Karl a very simple tropical storm with winds unchanged from yesterday of 65 miles per hour is about to make landfall in Quintana Roo Mexico on Mexicos Caribbean Coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
The Center of Circulation of Tropical Storm Karl is just east of Chetumal Quintana Roo, the Capital of the State of Quintana Roo moving at about 13 mph / 20 kph to the West Northwest. The Center of Karl should pass to the North of Chetumal Quintana Roo and Impact in the largest way Chetumail, Bacalar, and Mahahual in the Costa Maya.
The areas least affected will be the Northern most part of Quintana Roo like Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and Isla Holbox, as you get further south you will get more washover from the bands of Karl like around Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tulum and maybe even some heavy rains around Akumal.
Here in The Riviera Maya around Playa Del Carmen we should have scattered showers and thundershowers over the next 24 hours as Karl crosses the Yucatan Peninsula and emerges in the Gulf of Mexico where he should strengthen before striking the coast of Veracruz and Tamaulipas.
There IS a tropical storm warning in effect for the entire coast of Quintana Roo from Chetumal to North of Cancun (Cabo Catoche) as well as the Yucatan and Campeche states.
Currently it is partly sunny and humid in Playa Del Carmen with a slight wind from the southeast.

Title: Cancun - Riviera Maya Weather
Good Morning all,
I wanted to pop in and give an update on the Conditions here in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and the Riviera Maya including Cozumel and Isla Mujeres since I get alot of inquiries on current conditions, effects of the current systems on Mexico and even Airport delays.
Hurricane Danielle is gone from our area completely and HAD NO EFFECT on Cancun and the Riviera Maya or on Mexico for that matter.
Hurricane Earl a powerful Category 4 Hurricane is moving West Northwest to the East of the Islands and Bahamas where along the coast there are hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings in effect for areas of concern. Hurricane Earl is far from Mexico and WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON MEXICO, there are no flight delays in or out of Mexico as a result of Hurricane Earl. There are flight issues in Cancun and Mexico City as a result of the Bankruptcy of Mexicana Airlines and discontinuation of some services immediately.
Tropical Storm Fiona is following the same basic path as Earl but will turn more north before getting to the Northern most Leeward Islands. So Again, Mexico is NOT going to be affected by Fiona.
Here in Playa Del Carmen for the moment we have sunny skies with some scattered cottonball clouds dotting the sky. Temperatures are currently in the 90’s F / 30’s C with little wind from the east. Feels like 100ºF right now.
Most of the week will be the same.

Title: Cancun & Riviera Maya Weather
Hello All,
I know I know, I haven’t been in here that much the last month but lets be honest, the weather in Cancun and the Riviera Maya as well as Cozumel and Isla Mujeres has really been nothing to write about. I know alot of you read and subscribe to our Travel Magazine Weather and News Pages but I have an obligation here as well so I thought it was time to update you all on the nice weather we have here.
While the weather yesterday had so much to talk about from Hurricanes and Tropical Storms to Cold Fronts and Tropical Waves but really none of this is affecting us in a big way here in Playa Del Carmen. We have had a scattered shower here and there during the day or overnight for the last month but NO sustained rain or ruined vacations here. We had a short heatwave and now we have that cold front coming down from the US (Cold Front #1) which might get the overnight temperatures down to 73º instead of 75º but again, nothing to write about.
We have a Trough extending from the Gulf of Mexico down to the Pacific which has some showers behind it but very disorganized and in front of the Yucatan Peninsula we have Tropical Wave 25 moving west but again with very disorganized clouds and scattered showers so I don’t expect to see much in the way of rain.
For Mexico Hurricane Danielle and Tropical Storm Earl are not going to affect us at all so not much to say there.
Today we did have a 5 minute heavy downpour here in the North of Playa Del Carmen but 15 minutes away our reporter Pepe Franco reports mostly sunny skies and scattered clouds.
Hurricane Frank out in the Pacific also no affect for us here but has done alot of damage to the coastal pacific of Mexico from Heavy Rains and Flash Flooding.

Torrential Rains and High Winds affecting
the Area of Cancun and The Riviera
Maya as far south as Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
Overnight showers that would have given way to
partly sunny skies today have given way to high winds and heavy to torrential
rain in the Cancun and Riviera Maya area since
about 7AM.
Here in Playa Del Carmen we are registering wind gusts
of 35 mph
and heavy to torrential rain. The winds came in behind some light
overnight showers and a drop in the humidity and oddly enough a rise in the
barometric pressure over the last hour. Looking at the satellite image
here we see an area of unstable conditions from the southern tip of Cozumel
south to the southern caribbean which could bring these heavy rains all day off
and on from Chetumal to Cancun.

Good Morning,
Figured it is a good idea
to get a report out although there is no real weather threat or out of the
normal conditions. Good Morning to Gert and Dave hope all is well in your
area. Good Morning Puerto Rico, Franz in Dominican Republic and of course
our wet friends in the USVI.
First of all based on
many e-mails I have received I want to comment that our area of Mexico, that is
the SOUTHEAST MEXICO including all of the Yucatan Peninsula was not affected by
Hurricane Alex. We have toured the beaches from Bacalar to Cancun
and there is NO DAMAGE from the passing of Alex or remnants of him before or
after development.
Current Conditions:
Although the famous Weather Channel reports RAIN everyday it is not the case
but of course this time of year you can expect because of the tropical waves
and warm sea surface temperatures isolated afternoon or evening showers or
thundershowers. That being said and the fact that Tropical Wave 17 just
passed us yesterday it is important to mention that in the last 20 days we have
had NO days of just rain and 4 of those days somewhere in Cancun or the Riviera
Maya there WAS an isolated shower or sustained shower (more than an hour). We haven’t
had any like storms or heavy rain since the end of June when we had 2 days of
heavy rains in Playa Del
Carmen.
What is an isolated
shower or thundershower? Well a good example is last week I left my house
in the north of Playa Del
Carmen and headed to Akumal, in the south of Playa Del Carmen near Xcaret
it was raining hard and sporadically from Xcaret to Akumal there was rain or
showers off and on. Yesterday was another of those days with some periods
of drizzle and overnight showers as TW 17 moves away from us and Tropical Wave
18 begins to enter the area.
We are watching INVEST
97L but not looking like a concern for us here AT ALL, at this point, all
models have the system moving north northwest along the east of Cuba and heading
toward the tip of Florida and then into the Gulf of Mexico.
Tropical Event
Development? Currently the conditions in the Tropical Atlantic / Sub
Tropical Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico are
NOT FAVORABLE for development while the Caribbean Conditions 2 days ago became
FAVORABLE for development of a tropical event. INVEST 97L is currently on
top of DR and PR dumping rain and is an area of concern for future development
(24 hours to Tropical Depression). What will become Tropical Wave 18 is
right in front of INVEST 97L moving to the west and will emerge into the
Pacific (crossing Central America) and will affect in a big way Chiapas, Oaxaca
and Guerrero along the Pacific Coast and Southern Campeche, Tabasco, y Veracruz.
Anyway, for today clouds
should give way to some sunshine in the afternoon, overnight partly to mostly
cloudy with a chance of showers, tomorrow should be the better day of the week,
with partly to mostly SUNNY skies here in the area and Friday not a bad day
before soon to be Tropical Wave 18 starts moving to the area.

- Cancun - Riviera Maya & Mexico in General
|
- By "Kevin & Abril Stolz" <admin at travel2rivieramaya.com>
- Date: Tue, 6 Jul 2010 19:54:52 -0500

Good
Afternoon,
I
thought it would be a good idea since I get so many e-mails and calls about the
current conditions and future conditions in Cancun
and the Area as well that I see so many people googleing “Hurricane Alex Cancun” or “Affects
of Hurricane Alex Riviera Maya” to give you an update here.
Cancun
and The Riviera Maya including Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Tulum and the Costa Maya
from Tulum to the border with Belize.
We
are experiencing RAIN! Rain heavy at times with some electrical storms
all as a result of the Tropical Wave 12 that is off the coast of the Yucatan
Peninsula and moving west across the Yucatan Peninsula. TW 12 will move
into the Gulf of Mexico as did Alex and although current conditions are not
favorable for development could develop into a tropical event in the next
couple of days before heading for Texas as most models indicate.
Yesterday
we did a coastal drive from Chetumal to Playa Del Carmen looking at local conditions we even
went into Campeche on the border with Chiapas and encountered some periods of
rain isolated along the coast but the most concentrated area of rain was close
to Tulum and then near Playa
Del Carmen.
Today
our Cancun Radar indicated Rain along the entire coastline as well as interior
sections of Yucatan and Western Cuba, Grand
Cayman and Jamaica.
Outlook
for the next few days is much better than today, TW 12 should move across the Yucatan
and emerge into the Gulf of Mexico where development is more likely and later
on could affect the area with rain as a result of convection from it in the
Gulf but mostly will affect areas like Tabasco, Campeche, Veracruz and most
unfortunately Northeast Mexico where they are still trying to recover from
Hurricane Alex.
Another
note regarding Hurricane Alex, Tropical Storm / Hurricane Alex did NOT affect
the Cancun / Riviera Maya area directly or
indirectly, we had some affects from Convection from TD Alex or TS Alex but
nothing more. The Damage and deaths from Alex you are hearing or reading
about is in the Northeast of Mexico in Tamaulipas and the area of Monterrey.

While
Hurricane Alex continues across land and remains a Hurricane Category 1 in the Northeast of Mexico
dumping rain and 100 mph
winds on the area, Cancun and the Riviera Maya
again dodged the bullet in this very early first month of the 2010 Hurricane Season.
For more on Hurricane Alex you will find information in our news section.
For the area
of Cancun and the Riviera Maya including the
entire coastline from Playa Del
Carmen down to Chetumal today condtions get better. Currently our Radar
is showing some showers east of Isla Mujeres around Cuba, this is not sustained rain or
something that will interrupt your day but believe it or not a result of
convection from Hurricane Alex.
Current
Conditions:
Sunny with
some very scattered clouds in the area, warm and humid, we have winds coming
currently out of the Southeast at 15 mph / 24 kph, temperatures 82° F / 28° C
current humidity not bad 79% and we have the barometer steady at 29.9 / 1012
and steady.
Todays
Forecast:
Summary:
Mostly Sunny Hot and Humid
Temperatures:
Highs 90°F
/ 32°C
Lows tonight 77°F
/ 25°C
Humidity: 87%
during the afternoon
Barometer:
29.90 / 1012 Steady we expect a slight rise today.
Rain: Chance
of afternoon or early evening shower or thunderstorm over isolated areas less
than 1/4 inch could be expected.
Long Range
Forecast: Currently there is nothing of concern in the Caribbean
or Tropical Atlantic Area of concern. We are watching 2 tropical waves
that are moving west toward South and Central America like the one that is
affecting currently the Chiapas
area Tropical Wave 11 which is also pulling in convection from Hurricane
Alex. If you look back you will see that Hurricane Alex was Tropical Wave
#6 I believe and evolved into Tropical Depression #2 and of course Tropical
Storm Alex and now Hurricane. We will continue to watch that area for
development, but you can see since the development of Alex we have had 5
tropical waves cross Central America and not affect the Cancun
and Riviera Maya areas.

|
Good Morning,
Here in Mexico all eyes
to the East and southeast as Tropical Depression #1 becomes the first Atlantic
Tropical Storm of the 2010 Hurricane Season.
Currently Tropical Storm
Alex is located off the coast of the Yucatan
Peninsula in front of
Beliz and has been bringing rain heavy at times and some light winds to the
mainland. We are feeling the affects from Alex all the way to Cancun
including Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen and the
entire coast of the Riviera Maya and Costa Maya in the way of rain. Calls
are already coming in regarding whether some activities are or will be
cancelled but this is NOT a tropical storm in our area as yet, we are only
feeling the outer affects from it.
If Alex crosses where I
mentioned the other day near Belize
or Between Belize and Chetumal we will of course get Periods of Torrential
Rain, Local Flooding to low areas and closings of the Ports to vessels smaller
than 50 feet.
If Alex moves slightly to
the north to come across land we could get a lot more rain, wind and flooding
but for now we will just watch.
Currently in Playa Del Carmen it is
RAINING, there is little or no wind at all, temperatures are 79°F / 26°C and the barometer
has risen slightly over the last couple of hours to 29.90 / 1011. The good news
is the temperatures won’t get into the mid 90’s today JAJA only
about 89°F
/ 32°C
humidity 90% to 95% (when not raining).
The actual direct affects
from Tropical Storm Alex we can expect to start feeling on Sunday night or
early Monday but again, depends on final point of entry.

Happy
Fathers Day to all you dad’s out there and those who are soon to be dads.
Well
it seems that 92L is now just a wet memory for some out there but some are
still feeling the effects of the heavy rain and some wind (hi Susan on St. Croix), enjoy it. Currently over Puerto Rico as an
Intense Tropical Wave moving westward, one model yesterday were showing what
was left of 92L moving west northwest toward Mexicos Caribbean Coast but
conditions are NOT favorable for development at this time.
Here
in Cancun, Playa and The Riviera Maya including Cozumel
and Isla Mujeres we are going to continue to enjoy MOSTLY sunny skies, very hot
and very humid weather today and tomorrow. As usual you might expect
(although Sunday and Monday doubtful) afternoon or early evening thunderstorm
or brief shower as well as during the overnight but not enough to cool things
down, only to make it a little more humid (can it be more humid) currently 89%
and it is only 8:30AM.
Anyway,
if you are in Cancun or the Riviera Maya be sure to bring that SUN BLOCK for
the first days in the sun, too often we see the white milky skin of our
visitors from around the world walking around their first day or trying to walk
around with first and second degree burns, don’t be one of them, take the
sun a little at a time, it won’t go away. Drink lots of water, this
time of year in particular visitors to our beautiful beaches suffer dehydration
as a result of excessive sun and alcohal.

We enjoyed another
beautiful day on Monday here along the coast of the Riviera Maya but very hot and
humid.
Contrary to all of the
forecasts (except mine) there was no rain, few clouds and a light breeze and
today will be no exception.
The area from Cancun to Puerto Aventuras including the
islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres will enjoy again mostly sunny skies and
VERY Hot temperatures and high humidity, temperatures will reach the mid to
upper 90’s and feel like it is 103°F, at 8:30AM we were already at 90° here in
Playa Del Carmen.
We are watching Invest
92L which is in very warm waters in the tropical Atlantic and still has a
potential for development today or tonight before hitting wind shear sometime
Wednesday.
Tropical Wave #6 is
affecting the area south of us as the center of Tropical Wave 6 approaches the La Amistad National
Park in Costa
Rica moving due west following the path of
TW 5.
For those with interests
in the weather for Mexicos Tourist Areas you can follow the weather at Mexico Travel Magazine where

Today
all along the northern Caribbean coast from Tulum to Cancun
and further north we enjoyed a beautiful day with temperatures topping out at
88° F humidity 85% making it feel like 99°F away from the ocean.
This photo was taken at 4Pm on the beach in Playa Del Carmen at Calle 8
and you can see that it was indeed a beautiful day.
However
the reason for the afternoon update is that tropical wave #5 has
intensified to a low pressure of 1011 hPa (29.85) over the Gulf of Tehuantepec,
in 14 ° N and 95 ° W, 205 km
south of Huatulco, Oax. The system is generating a wide area of
instability in the south east of Mexico, which interacts with another area
of instability in the Southern Gulf of Mexico, promoting the potential of intense
heavy rain with electrical activity, hail and gusty winds in the South and
southeast of the territory and the Yucatan Peninsula which of course includes
Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Playa Del
Carmen, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum. Looking at the satellite
images and local radar it is clear that this convection that is going to affect
the area is quite to the south of The Riviera Maya but none the less I wanted
to update you on the chance that this could slide a little north and bring some
unstable weather to the area.
Infrared Image of Conditions in southeast Mexico
at 16:00 hrs June 14, 2010
You
can see from this image that there is a large area of disturbed weather from TW
5 on the pacific coast of Oaxaca and Chiapas pulling from the Gulf of Mexico causing severe
weather around the Yucatan
Peninsula. If you
look carefully the area that is NOT affected is our area of the Riviera Maya
from North of Cancun to Punta Allen including the islands of Cozumel
and Isla Mujeres. We hope that the steering winds we are experiencing continue
to keep this area of strong convection away from us allowing you to enjoy this
week here rain free but Mother Nature does like to throw us some surprises.

Hello All and welcome to 2010 Hurricane Season.
They are saying it will be an active season this year
so lets hope not but be prepared.
While Saturday didn’t turn out as bad as it looked the day did
remain cloudy all day with very few rays breaking through and of course we
experienced scattered areas of rain and thunderstorms even into the evening but
no steady rain that kept us off the beaches.
Today, Sunday June 13, 2010 we can expect partly cloudy skies in general
with a chance of rain for most of area of Tulum north along the coast to Cancun
including the islands of Cozumel and Isla
Mujeres. The wind calm and temperatures in the 80’s and humidity
around 85% making it feel like it is in the mid to upper 90’s. The
southern area of Quintana Roo or Mexicos Southern Caribbean Coast from Chetumal
to Punta Allen today can still experience severe storm activity in the way of
torential rain or severe thunderstorms from the remnants of Tropical Wave #5.
Current Conditions in Playa
Del Carmen are Mostly Sunny and heating up to be a very hot
and humid day here in The Riviera Maya.
Temperature 7:40AM CST: 83°F o 28°C
Wind: Calm
Humidity 88%
Barometer 29.0 and holding steady.
Long Term Outlook: Looking at the satellite images currently the Caribbean looks clear for the next 5 days with conditions
NOT favorable for development of tropical systems here. The US Navy is
looking at an area of disturbed weather coming off the coast of West
Africa INVEST 92L which is a long way from arriving to Mexicos Caribbean but
for those who are traveling 10 days from now keep an eye to the east.
This year I am on a new project for an online / Print
Magazine (online first, print December 2010) doing some of the photography for
destinations and events as well as doing the daily weather blog for the
magazine, some of my work is already up there but more to come. If you
get a chance check it out (rough stages official launch date is July 1, 2010) hopefully
it will be all it is cracked up to be. http://www.mexicotravelmagazine.com
