Seasons greetings to everybody. It's Christmas eve in the keys and very quiet. No rain, no wind just a bright clear sky with many stars. The winter soltice has passed and the days are getting longer. The weather has been nice the past week with days in the 70's and nights in the low 60's and little wind. By Sunday it is expected to change. Highs in the low 60's and lows in the mid 40's. Not much rain in sight. May everyone have a joyous and safe holiday season.

- The season

Mother Nature has her own calender but I think that the hurricane season is over. We were very fortunate this year and thank the Lord for that. The wind here has definetly changed as it has been blowing steadly from the North Northwest for about the last week. This is bringing dry cold air to South Florida and the KEYS. Not much rain but 20 to 30 mph winds. Last night the temperature got down to 50 in the KEYS and tonight it is predicted to go down even farther. One nice thing is these cold fronts don't last long  {4-5days} then it goes back up. Mid 70s during the day and mid 60s at night. The boat is staying warm and it really feels good to come in from the cold wind to the warm boat. If it gets cold here like in the Northeast US I guess we will just have to move further South. Happy Holidays to all.

The weather here in the Keys has settled in to a fairly normal fall winter pattern. Warm days and cool nights. Low 80's to mid 70's. The winter wind seems to be with us also. 10 to 15 mph almost every day. It gets to be annoying after a while. The holidays are just about here. Will probably have to let the belt out a few notches.

Well it seems, for now anyway, that our Keys winter is settling in. It has been very breezy for the past week with temperatures in the high fifties at night and high seventies and low eighties during the day. As long as the wind is from the north or northeast it stays cool with little rain. The water temp has dropped to 71 degrees in a very short time. Hopefully
the storm season is over. We should still be wary as one never knows with Mother Nature.

Went to the mainland for 4 days. It is terrible. traffic is everywhere and all hours of the day. This is a good reminder as to why we live in the Keys. The wind started to pickup this morning and tonight we have a 20 to 30 mph breeze. Tomorrow it is supposed to pickup a little bit more with 40 mph gusts then start to die down by Sunday night. The temps have been great, just like they are supposed to be in the fall. Low to mid 80's during the day and low 70's at night. The dry season seems to have finally started as we haven't had rain for about 5 days and none in sight. We are keeping a close watch on Richard as he isn't really sure where he is going after the Yucatan.

Well it looks like Paula will miss the keys. It appears that Cuba is going to be punished with a lot of rain. It might be possible that if there is any remnant of Paula coming off the south coast of Cuba that there could be a reformation. Lets hope not. Today it rained most of the day and into the evening. Probably an inch or better. Tomorrow could be the same until Paula passes by to our south. I see another area in the southwest caribbean is making waves. Can't wait until December.

The seasons not over until Mother Nature says its over. Paula has formed and is going somewhere although no one is quite sure where as of yet. It appears as though Western Cuba and the Keys are in the cone. I think it all depends upon interaction with the cold front moving south thru the gulf. I'm pretty sure we will at least get a bunch of rain. Today it rained on and off most of the day. That kept the temps in the mid 70's. Tonight is dry but more rain is expected tomorrow. We received about 1 inch of rain today. Stay weary of Paula.

Cloudy, rain coming and a decent chop on the ocean.
How about some positive thoughts from all of us for the miners in Chile. They still face some harrowing moments during the extraction. Kudos to the four volunteers riding the escape capsule down into the mine.
Prayers and best wishes to all...

The last few days have been relativly nice except for the wind. It has been blowing 25-30 mph for the last 2 days and is expected to last another 2 days. It sure stirs up the water to the point that you can't seen 1 foot down. The boat is heavy enough to sit still but the waves slap the hull. The nice part is that the direction it's coming from is NNE. It has cooled us down to  low 80.s during the day and mid 70's at night.
Glad to see Otto is moving off to the NE and fast. I still don't think the season is over yet. We shall see.

We've got steady winds at 20 knots out on Molasses Reef with seas building to 9 feet by tomorrow. Nearshore waters are becoming very rough with isolated showers. The water is still pretty warm though, about 83F, and I understand the visibility is improving for the hardier divers out there. We will be staying ashore, however, trying to figure out why my navigation lights are on the blink again.

Is there anything anything in this world scarier and more entertaining than election season in the US?

  • Date: Sun, 3 Oct 2010 19:26:28 -0700 (PDT)

The weekend was as predicted. It was low 80's during the day and mid 70's at night and no rain. Tonight just before sunset it started to cloud up on the Southeast horizon. Nothing showed on the radar. About 10 minutes ago the boat started to rock with the wind and the rain came down. It is still raining. I checked local radar and there was a little blip directly over us. The only one on the 100 mile scan. Oh well, it won't last long. The week looks quiet with a few showers here and there and comfortable temps. We are still keeping a watch on the Caribbean.

Next week highs in the mid 80's and lows in the mid 70's. We are waiting  and watching to see what happens in the Caribbean. This time of year one never knows and there is not much time for preparations So everyone stay watchful and stay prepared.

We dodged a bullet today. Thank you Lord. It rained most of the day but by nitefall the sun was visable as it set. We have more wind now than during the day, 10 to 15 mph. The storm disapated about 5: 00 P.M. today and remnants are moving North. Here it is 78 degrees, 75 % humidity, breezy and partly cloudy. We can see stars. No damage here in the keys but lots of flooding on the main land. Tomorrow sunny and hot.

Anyone in the Florida Keys and the south mainland would be well advised to pay attention to the recent post from Blayz in Jamaica. Very extensive flooding and damage and recommendations for evacuations. Our thoughts are with you. Rain here in Tavernier has been steady all night with gusty winds and it looks like this storm will be with us all day. Serious ponding on the roads around us.
The wind is down right now, only 3 knots at Molasses Reef but the warnings are out and we may see 9 to 12 feet seas beyond the reef and 3 to 5 inside. From my porch the ocean actually looks strangely calm. Good day to stay in and repair the traps.
I know this storm doesn't have a name but I'm calling her Hazel. Our little girl took her last swim yesterday, chased her final tennis ball and wagged her tail one last time. We miss her sorely...

Wed morn. Been raining since 2:00 A.M. Have about 4 inches so far. 78 degrees with little to no wind. Storm to become Nicole  and cross directly  over us by 2:00 P.M. today. Top wind gusts predicted to be 50 mph. Boat is secured as best as possible. Mainland has flooding and plenty of rain. Overall we could see 8 inches of rain, 35 mph winds, and 1 foot storm surge. Good luck to all.

Quiet day today. No wind, no rain. Sunny and hot. This must be the prelude to what is supposed to be coming our way. RAIN and lots of it, starting tomorrow. Nws tells us to expect up to 7 inches. We in the Keys can take it but the mainland can't. The water just lays there it can't run off fast enough. Not much wind with this system I hope. WIll keep you posted.

The day started out with thunder storms before daybreak untill 11:00. The rest of the day was sunny with a nice breeze from the east. We are waiting for the development of the system in the northwest Caribbean that is to move NNE towards Florida by the end of the week. Right now they are calling for a lot of rain. Hopefully it is too close to us to have time to develop into anything.

It has been raining on and off for most of the day. The radar shows that it is over for the night. The winds remain from the east but not as strong as yesterday. Everything points to Matthew disapating in the interior of Central America. Then Nicole will form in the northwest Caribbean and move towards the north, possibly to southwest Florida. None of this is definate as weather is not the perfect science. All we can do is stay alert and be prepared.

- Windy and Gloomy
  • By Papp Scott <largocee at comcast.net>
  • Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2010 12:31:15 -0400
Woken by rain squalls this morning with threatening skies all around. The wind has been blowing steadily out of the east for days, pushing up two to three foot seas inside the reef and four to seven beyond. Gusts measured on Molasses Reef at 23 knots and more. The forecast is for more of the same for the next few days and there is currently a small craft advisory in effect. This is very tough for our friends in the local dive shops. But we sleep well as there is no oil to be seen (remember BP?) and water temps are perfect for a shorty or just a scuff shirt.

We somehow squeezed in a day of diving last week but that break in the wind was short-lived. By the way, here's a shout out to the morons who used Conch Reef as their personal dumping ground. We picked up four beer bottles off the reef, lime wedges still intact, as well as bottle caps and hair bands, all just below the mooring ball. This was a deliberate drop, not a slip out of one's hand. Beautiful spot for a dive nonetheless with shark, trunkfish, lobster, trumpetfish, snapper, grunts etc. etc.

By the way, a big hello to our friends at Mangrove Marina. Here's to gentle winds and easy currents...

It seems that Bermuda has mostly physical damage. We heard that there was some injuries but no deaths. Thank the Lord for the blessings.
Now that they say the "verde season is over" we can start worrying about the Caribbean season. Wilma was our last visitor and she was not a very nice lady. All we can do is be prepared and hope for the best. Today, sunny and breezy high of 88.

Good evening everybody,
Sitting here reading the island reports amazes me how similar we are to islands of the Caribbean. We are in the Florida keys about 75 miles from the mainland USA. Our weather here is entirely different from the mainland. We are not really in the Caribbean, maybe the far northern reaches, but our weather is very much the same. Hot during the day, evening breezes and thunderstorms. We have the same concerns as you. When is the next storm, how strong and where is it going. Living on a boat it is even more important. The mainlanders don't seem to be as concerned. How quickly they can forget. Thanks for all your reports.it helps those west of you.

We have been very lucky in the Florida keys the past few years and we are grateful. So far this year everything seems to be traveling to the north and staying away from us. At this point Gaston is a long long way off and is still deciding if it wants to be a storm or not. Lets hope for the not. I just have this feeling that we all should be alert as this one is possibly coming in lower than the rest and could be trouble. Hope for the best for us all.

Thankfully, Bonnie did not develop into a threat. At the present time, the wind is light out of the northwest, the sun is trying to break through and we have not had rain since early this morning. Miami and the mainland received the brunt of the rain early and is heading across the state into the gulf. We had more wind yesterday, with gusts up to 20 knots rocking the boat. We are not even moving today! The weather for the rest of the weekend looks good, so come on down to the Keys and help our economy!

Now its time to fix lunch and then put everything back before cocktail time ( it's 5 o'clock somewhere!)

Well, I guess it is that time of year again; our first storm to visit the Florida Keys. It has been windy all day with partly cloudy skies and you just get that "tropical storm" feeling in the air. Living on a boat ( in a marina) adds a little extra preparation but we have been through this exercise many times. We should start getting the outerbands later tonight, with the storm moving in between 2pm and 8pm Friday. I don't mind the storms when they come through during the day but when it is dark and the middle of the night it gets scary. We had a 55' trawler break loose during Katrina and it missed us by inches as it was blown into the mangroves. I will post an update tomorrow. Have a wonderful evening!

- Oil Storm

I believe the quote below came from an article in the New York Times. We here in the Keys anxiously await developments in the Gulf, and feel terrible for our neighbors to the north already impacted by this horrible turn of events. A friend wondered aloud the other day about the impact of a hurricane on this and we considered the possibility of wind-blown oil raining down as a storm makes landfall. Let us pray...

There is no oil here in the Keys, the reefs, beaches and water are fine if anybody asks.

Our weather has been hot, 95F, with some rain mostly on the mainland. The diving and fishing has been superb, little wind and current, eighty to ninety feet of viz. The Rox'sea Music has been tugging at her docklines... paradise calls!

On the Deepwater Horizon, for example, the minerals agency approved a drilling plan for BP that cited the “worst case” for a blowout as one that might produce 250,000 barrels of oil per day, federal records show. But the agency did not require the rig to create a response plan for such a situation."

- We're not talking about the weather!
  • By Papp Scott <largocee at comcast.net>
  • Date: Tue, 11 May 2010 16:59:06 -0400
With hurricane season fast approaching, this island is not talking about the weather right now. After an unusually cold and windy winter our conversation is all about BP painting the Gulf of Mexico new shades of shimmering hydrocarbons. This correspondent spent much of this afternoon in the Monroe County Government Center at a well attended workshop/information meeting on the oil spill. Sponsored by the County Commissioners the meeting included representatives from the Coast Guard, NOAA, DEP, emergency response personnel, tourist development, et al and one brave soul from BP. We had to leave early but I am confident he made it out alive...

The good news, we hear, is that the slick remains some 450 miles away from us (bad news of course for our friends in Louisiana, Alabama and the Florida panhandle (for whom our hearts sincerely and truly go out). The bad news, and isn't this always the way, is that the slick may be moving closer to what is called the Loop Current which brings Gulf waters southward to the Keys and on into the Atlantic, up the East Coast etc. etc. Extensive contingency plans are in place and the meeting room was packed with volunteers and interested, concerned citizens.

We have been told that there is no way of knowing, at this time, what direction this will take and it is quite possible we will be spared. Unfortunately this uncertainty is already impacting travel and tourism to Florida and the Conch Republic, with anecdotal evidence of cancellations and a fall off of vacation inquiries.

Our beaches, reefs and waters of this area remain clean and beautiful as always. Ther is no scent of oil in the air. The turtles, jacks, groupers, morays and blennies are still ambulating under their own power and the eagles, osprey, grackles and turkey vultures continue to play chicken with the cars on the Overseas Highway.

And of course, and most sadly, there is still no progress in stanching the flow into the Gulf... they say this has the potential damage of a hurricane that never leaves.

For further info or details feel free to email or call me, or turn to  http://www.keysspill.com/   for onsite coverage and volunteer information.
