We just have high, thin clouds now with some clear patches of sky now. Winds are calm here in Gravel Bay, but still no electricity. I saw some signs blown down and other minor damage in a short tour this morning. I put a short video on our blog, The Gravel Bay Gazette.

He's gone past us to the west a bit and winds are coming around more on shore and quite a bit stronger. No measuring equipment, but I'd guess about 30-40 mph. Surf is building a little, but nothing big yet.

I don't have a way to measure wind speed, but if we had anything unusual here in Gravel Bay, I slept through it. We lost power at about 4:40 AM (not unusual). That woke me up, as it always does. Power is still down at least in our area and, apparently, Coxen Hole because the cable TV is out.
We've been getting lots of rain throughout the night and so far this morning. I would think that the winds are much stronger on the north side of the island. Not sure if the police are letting people drive about yet or not. I haven't noticed any traffic yet this morning. I might give it a try later to check things out.

We are starting to feel TS Richard more and more
here in Clabash Bight. Winds are picking up to about 37 38 mph and he is still
(presumedly) 57 miles away. I think he is building at this time and we expect
the eye to pass 26 miles north of us about in 7 hours. Even though we will be on
the weak side you cannot tell it at this point.

Latest report (2am)
puts him at 16.4 N and 85.1 W, passing north of Roatan by only 14.6 miles. We
had a rain band pass through, lots of rain and 35 mph winds....now it is quet
again and 3mph from the NE.

Good news and bad
news. It is going farther north, now tracking about 14.4 miles away from Roatan.
Thats the good news. the bad news is they cannot estimate how much t might build
now that it is moving away form interaction with land. Right now it is still
fairly calm, WNW 1 mph and 78 deg F. no squalls since about 10 am...nice and
quiet but eerie...

Glad it's not strengthening yet. But it looks like it's likely to come right between us & the coast. Winds are still dead calm here. No rain at the moment. There is a curfew tonight starting at 10PM.

In Calabash bight we
are pretty much prepared as we can get. There are other boats showing up and
most of us are surprised that a lot of shrimp boats are still in oak
ridge, anyway we are hoping for the best since the CPA is now only 2.2
miles to the north a very uncomfortable position to be in since error is more
than that in most tracking!

All of us here on the island are doing the last
minute preperation for the arrival of TS Richard. Right now using the "closest
point of approach" we are 0.;8 miles from projected path at this time. We all do
hope it stays a tropical storm and does not have the chance to build any more.
Right now we have 75 deg, partly cloudy skies and calm winds. Always the case it

Good morning
Very thick clouds hanging over Roatan this morning...........TS Richard was sleeping at 15.9w/80.7n. overnight. He was expected to start a w/nw movement towards the Honduras coast, Bay Islands and Belize, and that has commenced with the movement towards the west near 3 mph...6km/hr.....at a west to west/northwest heading. At 11:00 EDT Richard was centered at 15.8 north and 81.1 west. Richard should be approaching the NE coast of Honduras late Saturday and the Bay Islands on Sunday. There is strong speculation that Richard will become a hurricane sometime this weekend.

The
latest NOGAPS and GFS model runs predict the formation of a tropical
depression 4 - 5 days from now, in the southern Caribbean off the coast of
Nicaragua. The storm is predicted to move northwest or northwards towards the
Cayman Islands and Jamaica, once it forms. The GFS model has been pretty
reliable in forecasting this year, and the fact that we have two major
models predicting the formation of a new Caribbean tropical depression next week
is worth paying attention to.

Well just got the
skinny, 98L is now TS paula. Where she is going is anybody guess but my bet is
that we will at least get a lot of rain from her! Puerto Lempira has been
getting steady 35 mph winds and 3.31" of rain!

Looking at the satellite information it appears that moisture from the Pacific is being drawn into the equation and being on the outer edge of TD16 we are in for a very WET and NOISY day.

We have 3 phase power here at Radio HRGS. Well, we HAD 3 phase power. I woke up sweating at about 3:00 AM and discovered we had lost one phase of our power, which took down our A/C and bedroom ceiling fan. We don't have an anemometer here but the wind is making quite a bit of noise. I'd guess it's about 45-50 mph.
I was at the airport yesterday a little before noon and it was fairly busy with tourists wanting to get off the island. Some were headed to the mainland which did not look like a good idea to me at all.
Rains have been off and on here and never more than moderately hard.
We'll see what the daylight brings.

Here in Roatan we had a 10pm curfew everyone off the streets and roads.Its now 11.10pm and the winds have started to pick up a little.It was very starnge to see west end roatan quiet at 10pm on a Friday night!!!!!

I agree with Dave, too early to really tell what
Matthew is actually going to do. The track was shifted a little more to the
south which brings it even closer to the mountains and over land a little
longer. Here we hope that is the case, I actually hope it goes more to the
south and just falls apart..... but then again watch what you wish for right?
Still waiting for all the boats to show up and take refuge in Calabash Bight,
the hurricane hole..... going out to prep all the boats at our dock and set
a marker at the end of the shoal just in case all the shrimpers, lobster boats
and ferries show up.

Well looks like we
are in for a bit of wind and rain this weekend. Tracks indicate TD15 travelling
right for us, some variation shows a little closer to land and some right over
us and yet others show it going to the north of us but not by much. What does
seem a little strange is that normally you would see the shrimp and lobster
boats begin arriving into our bight (Bay) here but none so far. Maybe they think
it isn't heading our way or big enough to worry about? Time will tell, they have
tommorow late to show up.... that is when I start to make
preperations.

My first post of the season, hoping I would not have to post one this year.
We wait in anticipation, knowing we have something out there lurking, ready to pounce on us. Almost all of models show that we are going to get something as we are considered its target. It could be a TD, TS, or a hurricane. Skys are starting to cloud up at this hour, nice soft breeze out of the E/SE. Don't particularly like the idea of our whatever stalling out on Sunday and Monday, that means tons of rain. Our locals in Punta Blanca have all brought their boats to shore for safe keeping. One reference was made in one of the weather channels that this possible storm was much like Wilma in 2005, high winds and lots of rain. Hopefully it will hit the mountainous coast line of Nicaragua and Honduras and die a fast death.

one. Some models available to us show it crossing into Nicaragua / Honduras

So far we have had cloudy days with intermittent rain
and some very strong thunder storms pass through for the last week or so. Almost
feels like the rainy season is a few months early. I notice Cayman Islands has a
small area of circulation today but nothing on the network about it. I also see
that 20% just on the North Coast of South America. Colin is way out there but
moving fast, maybe too fast and will fizzle out. Everyone watch the weather,
seems it is getting much more active now.

Here on the south side of the island we are feeling
just a bit of wind and plenty of rain. I am surprised I still have satellite
internet, will wonders never cease? Anyway, overcast, winds west south west at 5
to 7 gusting to 21 or so. I suspect the north side is getting worse weather and
waves from this system. We have been asking for rain so I guess we now have our
answer!

Hello Everyone,
Lots of newz to report again, so will get right to it. I sincerely apologize
for the length of this, but I had to get it all out. You might want to read
it in segments or just delete if of no interest to you. Sorry to clog up
your computers. I just have so much to report, you would think I took
lessons from another windy writer.....inside joke :)
The biggest accomplishment this go round is the RRR website is up and
running, flaws & all. Took me forever to find the theme song, but worth the
hunt, I just think it is perfect, hope you do too.
I had an excellent meeting with animal lover, Mike Reimers, General Manager
of Cruise ship port, Mahogany Bay. They are willing to donate $500.00 and
allow us to put up a Donation Box on the Cruise Ship Dock Entrance - this is
HUGE!! We also agreed to work with their stray, semi- feral cats on their
key to spay, neuter and release. Olivia Munteanu agreed to show us how to
use her cat traps for this purpose and I have a volunteer from Infinity Bay
to help as well.
This meeting has brought up another critical step we must take in order to
work with large businesses and corporations that sponsor substantial
donations. We MUST have in place our Non-Profit Status (NGO). Mahogany Bay
is ready to move forward once we are an NGO. The same is true for the Coxen
Hole Port. So, now I need to find specific funds for this purpose. I had one
animal lover attorney on Roatan offer to do this for RRR for $2500.00. That
seems very high to me. Animal lovers and doners Ken Schadegg and Donna
Madden have asked for their attorney to do pro bono work, but that would be
many months away due to scheduling. Does anyone know of an attorney that can
donate or discount their fees to help us? We are stuck. I do not want to
take money away from rescue, that is our primary goal. The animals must come
first. On the other hand we can do so very much more for them as a
non-profit. Please help spread the word.

Animal Advocates. They are our voice in Rotary. Rotary Club International
will help us in a huge way IF we are an NGO....ugh.
Another way the NGO will be so helpful is there is a daily "Animal Click
Site" where you can click online every single day & a pet food organization
will donate a bowl of food per click. It is free & easy. They will even send
you a daily reminder. How easy is that? This group also sponsors a contest
to vote and give away $100,000 to needy NGO Rescue Organizations........can
you imagine?
I have submitted everything to Petfinders for their approval to be the first
country in the world to be listed on their adoption site without a zipcode
(what they use to run their search engines). Unfortunately, yup.........need
the NGO status to be legitimate.
UPDATES
FRANKY
Franky has returned from La Ceiba, a new, healthy, cancer free, happy,
affectionate young lady and has been adopted into a quiet, loving West Bay
home with kitty cats she very much adores. She is lovely. Everything was
going along just fine until the "call of the open road" was heard, she
chewed through her leash & took off. After much frantic searching she was
found and all was calm on the homefront. It happened again & she was nowhere
to be found. On a freak coincidence, Franky's owner happened to walk outside
a business in West End and there she was, a long way from home, missing of
course her beautiful new collar. She had travelled all the way back to her
old location, but was very happy to see her owner. Homeless street dogs have
no idea they have a new home and are allowed to stay there. They only know
eat, rest, run. Taking in a stray with this hard life history takes
considerable confinement, love and attention to break the old habits & trust
that is is safe to stay in one place. We are all learning as we go.
Unfortunately, it appears Franky has another tumor. We are awaiting the
results of the vet visit.

Bruce on the Loose
Bruce has been spotted in many locations by several different people. Laura,
his original rescuer had put out a dragnet & got a call from an islander
friend who actually had him and was feeding him in West End. Laura was
ecstatic her "Bruce" was almost back home and raced back from French Harbour
to retrieve him. It was then an island woman walked up to the young man
feeding Bruce and said "What the_______ are you doing with my dog?"
We are all just heart broken that this poor puppy with a horribly broken
leg, healed mangled, left to starve on the streets, has an "owner."
We have brainstormed:
Just take him to his wonderful new home and medically care for him
Offer to buy him
Get him medical attention & give him back to his abusive owner
None of these ideas offer a solution that won't cause a never ending problem
for the adoptors/rescuers
Another awful issue to deal with.
I have personally witnessed and others have too, a truck full of workers
laughing uproariously as the driver tried his best to run over a lame dog in
the street. With no respect for life, no humanitaryism in the culture here,
we have a very rough road ahead.
Nobody told me it would be this hard or heartbreaking.
No good deed goes unpunished should be an RRR billboard.

Talk about a fairy tale. Lucky is dragging his toys & beddy proudly from
place to place, has learned all his basic obedience commands and is growing
like a weed. His parents adore him, but Lucky is smarter than they realize.
He already has them wrapped tight around his little paw.

I just returned from a trip to Honduras last night and immediately got
online to try and find an organization to donate to that was directly
helping animals on Roatan. I was so very saddened by the animal situation I
encountered there.
One animal in particular stole my heart. A sweet, very young black cat, a
kitten really, was hanging around the place where we stayed in Roatan. She
is TINY, with thinning hair and is probably the skinniest cat I have ever
seen. There is simply nothing to her and she had obviously recently had
kittens. I first encountered her when she came around begging for the
fruit and bread scraps that they set aside to feed the 4 tame deer that live
on the property. Yes, the cat was trying to eat fruit and bread, that is
how starved she is! Unfortunately the employee of the hotel owner informed
me that she couldn't feed the cat because the owner "doesn't want cats
around the hotel and he chases it away every time he sees it".
(Grrr...needless to say his hotel is NOT getting a good review from me on
Trip Advisor!) Boo on him and Land's End Resort! Of course I bought cans
of cat food and discreetly fed her twice a day over the three days of our
stay. A few meals from me did so little to solve her problems, but I didn't
know what else I could do. I would have smuggled her back to the US in my
suitcase if I could!!
I was thrilled to find out about the rescue you are starting and know that
someone is trying to help.
Would you consider taking a sponsorship donation for this cat
specifically?? I would be willing to cover all her expenses for spaying and
getting her healthy and hopefully finding her a home. (I'd even adopt her
if there was a safe way to get her to Atlanta!) I will also share your
information with all my animal-loving family members and ask them to make

I'm sorry if I made anyone cry! To end on a happy note, I have been
exchanging emails with RRR founder Penny today and she has pledged to go
find that little black cat I fed and make her their next project! I offered
to sponsor her spay and medical care if she's able to find her. There MAY
have also been an offer of adoption to Georgia mentioned somewhere in those
emails. (My dear husband MAY kill me!!)

It's amazing how well kittens can hide! Two of them disappeared for 2

mom and babies were all together in the spare bedroom.
The kittens will come out from under the couch to chase a string, but when
they see a human on the other end, they boot-it right back under the couch.
They are still nursing, and eating solid food. I think it is going to take a
while to socialize them. Got a couple of good bites when I tried to get one
off an end table.
Mommy cat is an absolute sweetheart. Loves attention, is very calm, and
her belly is full and round. They are all using the litter box and no sign
of worms...which really surprises me.
Two of the kitten's have already been spoken for (once they are weaned and
a little more social.) I don't think it will be to long before all three
have full-time homes. And mom...like I said she is an absolute sweetheart
and anyone would be lucky to have her. I'll keep her here until someone
does.

thank you Heather for letting Penny know and sponsoring the mom getting
fixed. Thank you Tamara and Kristan for crawling under a building getting
bit & clawed to rescue the cats and giving me some starter supplies.

Heather's email Plea to family & Friends
Everywhere we went we saw many, many starving, neglected, sick and injured
dogs and cats living in the streets. NONE of these animals were spayed or
neutered. Every meal we ate involved me picking all the meat out of
Brandon's food so I could give it to some animal I passed on the way back to
the hotel! A few cats were smart enough to come right into the outdoor
restaurants and beg for scraps under the table at the places that were
tolerant enough not to chase them away. (They did very well at our tables!)
The really heartbreaking part is that, despite their sorry lot in life and
obvious mistreatment these were some of the sweetest, friendliest animals
I've ever met. Many of the dogs would start wagging their tails if you
simply made eye contact with them, a friendly word or a pat on the head and
they were ecstatic. At best they are usually ignored, at worst yelled at,
chased or kicked, so showing any little kindness seemed to make their day.
In a poor, troubled country like Honduras the situation is understandable to
some degree. Many people struggle just to feed their families. Animals are
for work or meat and "pets" serve no useful purpose. It was explained to us
that even among the people who are better off, the culture holds animals in
very low regard. Most people think nothing of turning their animals loose
to the streets when they are tired of them, if they move, or if the pet
becomes too sick or injured to serve their purpose as a guard dog. Even
dogs that are "owned" are still allowed to roam free in the streets or are
tied up outside and are fed just enough scraps to keep them barely alive.
Of course we have animal problems here in the US too, but at least we have
places like Humane Societies, Animal Control, Spay and Neuter Clinics,
low-cost vet services, etc. In Honduras and many other third world
counties, these things simply DO NOT EXIST. There is no organization or
infrastructure set up to help animals.
When I got home I did some digging online to find a humane organization in
Honduras where I could donate, just to feel that I did something to help.
After many hours of searching I found almost nothing. But low an behold, I
finally came across an organization on Roatan Island. A few ladies have
formed a rescue organization, literally just months ago called Roatan
Renegade Rescue (RRR). They are so new their website is not up yet but you

I know you all already do so much to help animals, but this organization is
about as grassroots as it gets - there's no overhead. Every dollar they get
goes towards buying food, treatment and a neuter/spay for a desperate
animal. She has an agreement with a vet who gives a 50% discount for
services. Couple that with the favorable exchange rate and your American
dollars could go VERY far there! If you would like to consider donating,

A Little Clarification
I receive phone calls for help & find that some people think they are
somewhere other than Roatan.
"There are stray dogs around here you have to come & round up." It is
basically me, Vanna White & my cell phone. I need to know what the specific
problem is, where the animal is, its condition, does it have an owner? A
collar? Will you help me locate it and get it in a crate? From there, my
volunteers & I start the long process of providing care, shelter & adoption.
Many people at that point are a bit taken aback that I need a little more
involvement from them. If everyone helps a little, we can move mountains.
"Dog food is really expensive. Can you give me some free food?" NO
"Can you take my pet in to be spayed/neutered & just say it is a stray for
the discount?" NO
"Will you watch my dog for 2 weeks? I really need a vacation." Uh,
NO......Will you take care of my 10?
We are just getting started & we have a long journey ahead. I do dream about
our facility and I know it will happen. We will have a pet sitting service,
for a fee to help offset RRR expenses. We will have a vet clinic, an
adoption center & my goal is to hire young teenagers to begin learning to
care for, nurture & respect animals; tours, educational events, school show
& tell..........Lots of steps ahead of us.

proud of Blake Finley, 14 year old self taught, computer savant, who donated

Door
This rescue is nothing short of a
miracle. I will let the rescuers' emails tell this
story:
Penny, we need your
help.
Mickey and I were driving up to the
Mega Mall, when on the side of the road by Reco, I spotted a scrawny little
puppy, dirty, haggard and about to drop who looked like he was going to try and
cross the street. I yelled at Mickey who made a wild U-turn in the middle
of the road that you might have seen on Miami Vice, came back on the wrong
side of the road, stopping traffic, while I jumped out and scooped the little
guy up. It was teamwork in action.
You never saw such a
forlorn little creature in your life. Probably no more than 6 or 8 weeks
old, every rib in his body sticking out, barely able to stand, right out in the
hot sun right on the edge of the busy highway.
I scooped him up and put him on my
lap and we drove straight to Dr. Soto's. Luckily he was there. We
got him a bowl of water first and he was almost too exhausted to drink. He
finally drank a little water and Dr. Soto gave him a shot of vitamins. He
was afraid to try and deworm him or do much else because of his extremely
depressed immune system.
We left him there with instructions to wash (he
was covered with fleas) and get rid of the ticks and said we would be back to
pick him up. When we returned, Dr. Soto had already left but there
was a girl at the register (who spoke no English). We managed to convey
that we wanted to give the puppy food and water. She started to
give him some dry food (that I know he never would have been able to get
down) so we found a can of adult wet food (lamb & rice), got it open
with a knife and put it in his cage in a dish, with a bowl of water.
At
this point we were very discouraged. Even with food and water in the
carrier, he just sat in the corner in the back of his cage with his eyes closed
and his head down on his chest. I really thought that we might have been
too late but the girl picked him up, brought him up to the food and gently
pushed his head into the dish and he started to eat. Mickey and I almost
cheered.
Since neither of us had a place to keep him we decided to board
him overnight to let him stay in an air conditioned space where he could get
some rest and hopefully replenish himself. The girl gave me the
bill which I paid, and told her we would be back tomorrow to pick him
up. When we went back to look at him one last time before leaving, he was
still eating. He's a little trooper.
This little guy never smiled
once, never wagged his tail, never showed any sign of emotion whatsoever the
whole time we had him (except when he got his vitamin shot that stings-then he
cried out). Imagine a puppy at that age not smiling or wagging his tail
even once. He really needs a break. His short little life has been
nothing but suffering and neglect and maybe now he will get a second
chance.
If we brought him to you tomorrow, do you think you might find
him a good home? I know the enormity of our request because there aren't
that many people on the island apparently looking for sweet pets. But this
guy is sweet and I'll bet with a little love and nourishment he would
flourish.
He was so sad and weak when we found him, he climbed right into my
heart.
Mickey went by Soto's this morning early to check on him. He
said his little tummy was bulging. I don't think he stopped eating from
the time he finally started until Mickey saw him this morning.

Penny:
Penny had her day planned out to stay home & catch up
on all her emails, business stuff, accounting & of course the backlog of RRR
info to get out, website work & most importantly thank you's to donors and
others with great ideas to share. After the above email, I might as well have
thrown the foot high pile of papers in the In Bin out the window. I have no
place yet to board animals awaiting adoption or for the critical after
care, so rely on my trusty band of volunteers. I had one couple in mind who
would be perfect. Said a little prayer, took a deep breath and emailed
them. I got a call back immediately. They were on their way and would foster the
poor little thing until he was well enough to be adopted. I immediately called
Keith, who was overjoyed.
They scooped him up in a towel & came down to Penelope's
for overnight emergency supplies out of Vanna White & also so I could
take a peek....so small & raw from his flea & tick bath. Please
find the attached "Before Photos." The last 2 are the
"After Photos" about 2 days later. Well, if there was ever a fussing, nurturing
clucking hen of a mom, that is Lin and her baby.
Baby Keith's first progress report:
The little guy is sleeping in his crate with his new toy, blankie - his
crate has an attachable water bowl and it's got Pedialyte/water mixture which he
drinks up. He ate a good meal when we got him home - we stopped on the way
home and bought him puppy food. We were worried that his little tummy
might have trouble digesting the adult canned food.
He's doing what puppies do - eating, sleeping, drinking and pooping.
Tomorrow he'll have another flea bath since he's scratching again and we don't
want his skin irritated anymore than it already is.
I hear tiny cries which tells me he woke up and wants out....
Penny:
The next day I receive a phone call from John, giving me an
update on LUCKY (Baby Keith). The puppy only cried out a few times before
settling down to sleep, is exploring the yard and looking around for his
siblings and following Lin everywhere, peppy & puppylike. I am then informed
there is no need to look any further. Lucky has been adopted! From about dead on
the side of the road to living in the lap of luxury, Lucky is aptly
named.
Email from Lucky's new mom to a friend, kind of sums this
story up.
RRR had another successful rescue last Thursday - a little puppy (less than
3 pounds) who was covered in fleas/ticks and so very sick that he couldn't even
cross the road. Thanks to a good samaritan who u-turned and rescued him,
then drove him right to the vet's office - this little boy received the urgent
medical care that he needed to live another day. The vet mentioned that it
was the worst infestation that he had ever seen...
Long story short, Penny reached out to us to see if we could foster him
until she could get him adopted and of course we agreed. It was instant
love on our part for this little fighter - who has had such a hard life for
being so young and yet continues to trust people. We've named him Lucky
and we feel as though we're the lucky ones that he came into
our life.
Rescuer Keith's reaction:
. "If you're ever up a tree, call
on me. If you're ever in jam, here I am. It you're ever sawed in half, I
won't laugh, it's friendship, friendship, just the perfect blendship"....
Mickey and I are both in your debt and at your disposal.
Penny: Well, that's good. RRR will take all the help we can
get.
A Reunion is being planned between rescuers & the proud new parents.

Our first rescue, known as Perp, Frazier, now Trouble
is doing just great, an exuberant happy young fellow, part of a pack. When this
hyper goofy boy has an energy explosion, his Chihuahua step brother puts
him in his place. Trouble does live up to his name and couldn't have a better
home.
Polytilly dog (nearly severed neck) is doing fine I am
told.
Pedro (blind) is back home on West Bay
beach.
Franky should be coming home from La Ceiba this
Wednesday. She has an adoption applicant!
Poor Bruce is still loose (broken leg). He has been
spotted all the way back in West End, so I need help with his capture. He chewed
through his lead on his second escape, why I need a donation of a long chain
lead - for the animal's own safety while awaiting treatment or in after
care.
We still have 5 adorable Calico mix cats waiting for
furever homes. If you are lonely or bored, consider a Calico - they are very
entertaining.

Locations where there have been no sales are because no one is telling the
story: "For every 10 wristbands sold, we can spay or neuter, give medical aid,
save the life of a homeless animal. "
Also, keeping them under the counter is a sure way of
having -0- sales.
If you are interested in selling RRR wristbands at
your place of business, please let me know.
Many kind people have inquired what we need the most.
It is frustrating to capture/rescue these poor homeless animals, get them the
medical help they need, heal them and then they bleed to death from tick, flea,
mite infestations or heart worms. That is what we urgently need:
medications and of course they are the most expensive items. I
have done an enormous amount of online research and have found internet
companies who will sell to me in quantity (bulk rate), without
prescriptions.
AAdvantage Flea & Tick Preventative: does not work
here. Not strong enough & not waterproof.
We need:
Frontline Plus for dogs & cats. There is no
generic and it is expensive. We can get a break in bulk. This is quite helpful
as we are not paying for fancy little packages & I can administer it by
approximate weight of animal.
The best price I found was $104.00 for a 12 pak with
free shipping to FL. Then we have the shipping & customs cost to
Roatan.
Heart worm preventative
Heartgard, which I have always used is outrageous,
about $10 a pill for giant breeds

A rescue group from where I adopted my Savannah, has a
national source for discount coupons to rescue groups, anything animal related.
They are very happy to help us. Problem is, the stores here do not take coupons.
Please help me figure out a way to get the coupons from them to you, to purchase
food, meds, supplies to be shipped or carried down to us.

Cruise Ship Dock
Thanx to Peggy Orange, Keyhole Bay, I now have contact
information. My goal is to have Donation Boxes set up on the cruise ship docks.
Could be huge and make our dream of building a facility a
reality.

I am breathlessly.... gasping.... in great
anticipation of our website. It is almost ready to go online. We decided to get
it up with a few flaws, just to get things moving forward. When I received
this generous offer to create a website for free, no doubt this person thought
he was donating a few hours of his time for a great cause. Being a creative
interior designer, this guy didn't know what hit him. I would wake up in
the middle of the night with more & more ideas, driving him quite mad I
am sure.While quietly tearing his hair out, he patiently explained to me that
each of my zany ideas were in the range of $2000 each: animation packages,
etc....oooopsy. Our designer, Blake has done such a great job for us that I
invited him down to Roatan for a big thank you, knowing our volunteers would put
him up & feed him in gratitude. He giggled and said his parents would not
allow him to fly alone.

taught web designer GENIUS!!! Unbelievable.
Petfinders
Trying to figure out the best way to set up our
Adoption Page, it seems many organizations use Petfinders. I know I am on it all
the time. They have a proactive outreach program, so undaunted, I contacted
them. Our hang up is Honduras does not have a zipcode and that is how their
search site is set up. We are trying to set it up using my US mailing address
zip code with a location explanation listed with each animal photo. To do so, we
need an up and running website, letter from our vet stating we are an
organization he works with and a formal Adoption application on the website. All
in the works. If we are accepted, Honduras will be the first country in the
world without a zipcode listed on Petfinders.......(Roatan, the Little
Island That Could!)

Pedro's Struggle to Get Home
Blind Pedro had settled in at his foster's home and was recovering nicely.
The housekeeper was administering his meds and keeping him fed. Pedro was
enjoying his temporary home. I received a frantic call at dawn. Some horrid
man had come on the property with an aggressive dog. The dog attacked Pedro
who was tied up. The attack got the housekeeper out of bed. It was bad. When
I got there, Pedro was covered in blood. His ear and the top of his head
were bitten badly. I tried to clean the wounds, but couldn't get near him.
He kept rubbing his head in the gravel to stop the pain. I then saw that the
Frontline had done nothing to kill the ticks and he was in very bad shape.
The lady thought he was just fine. She never returned my calls because she
had no money in her phone. I removed Pedro with difficulty as he was so
scared it took 3 of us to get him in the crate. I had nowhere to take him.
Dr. Soto was located and was waiting for me at his clinic. Pedro was
sedated, wounds cleaned and shaved, given a shot of antibiotics, flea & tick
bath, wormed him and his terribly deformed nails were trimmed. Walking on
sand, the nails never filed down, so it was difficult for him to walk on a
hard suface. He spent the night at Dr. Soto's. The next morning I barely
recognized this beautiful dog and he smelled good too. It broke my heart
that every time he heard my voice he started to shake. I am like the guy
with the keys in E.T. When I show up, things go bad, or so it seemed to
Pedro. He totally freaked out in front of the clinic with all the speeding
traffic noise & managed to slip his collar, a huge truck narrowly avoiding
him. I finally got the vet assistant to help me & once again struggled him
back into the crate in Vanna White. One more leg to go. Once we were in the
vicinity of West Bay Beach, a change came over Pedro, but he was again too
afraid to come out of the crate. Finally I got the collar back on him,
coaxed him out & walked him home. He perked up, head up and sped up. Once at
Bananarama, he threw himself down in front of the bar, had a huge drink of
water & actually smiled at me. I removed his collar and walked away with
tears in my eyes. Pretty Pedro had made it back to the only home he has ever
known.

Yes Roatan has been getting some isolated rain showers
and some rather strong thunderstorms of late. Not very frequent but still enough
to add a couple of hundred gallons of water in the cistern. We actually have
rain in the next four days forecast! I suppose this year the Afternoon rains are
early.

Well into dry season and yes, not much rainfall in the
last three weeks, if any here in Calabash Bight. We did miss a good thunderstorm
about a week ago, it rained in the center of our 40 mile long rock unfortunately
we are on the East end so didn't get anything. Yes I know, watch what you wish
for but I am just wishing for some rain and nothing more! Picky you say, well
closer to Hurricane season one needs to be. We are ready for it this year, are
you?

Pedro's Story
Three different animal lovers came to the store to tell me of a blind dog
with a massive ear infection, roaming West Bay Beach. He was thought to be a
yellow lab. I arranged with Guy, owner of Bananarama, that when the dog came
by for his evening handouts, they would secure him for the night & I would
pick him up the next morning. As often happens, it appears even stray dogs
are on "island time" and he was a No Show.
I walked the beach, searching for him and finally a friendly Foster's
staffer lured him out for breakfast. His name is Pedro. He is part Golden
Retreiver, part island dog. Pretty boy. He had never walked on a leash, so
it was interesting getting him back to the van where another friendly,
helpful staff member from Bananarama lifted him into Vanna White and we got
him into a dog crate, no doubt another first for Pedro. He panicked a bit
when we got moving, so had to stop, set his crate upright and secured it.
After that, he was calm and quiet, something I did not think would happen,
being a homeless, blind dog.
Once at Dr. Calderon's it was determined that Pedro has been blind from
birth, nothing can be done for his vision. The vet dug out a full bucket of
dirt from his ears, so he had to be deaf from the blockage as well. His ears
were bloody and scabbed from clawing at them, but miraculously, no
infection. Dr. Calderon suggested Pedro be put down since he is blind and
has no home. I made the decision to go ahead with Pedro's neuter as he knows
his way around West Bay Beach, it is home to him, he is fed by both
Bananarama & Foster's, everyone likes him and he is a very nice dog. I had
to pay the full rate for his neutering as he had some rare testicular
anomaly and 2 incisions had to be done. Way too much information for me, but
he should be just fine. As luck would have it (again) friend Sylvia, Sandy
Bay, stopped by and she agreed to take Pedro home for his recuperation. He
had a rough time coming out of the anesthesia, but Dr. calderon assured
Sylvia the panting and gasping were normal. Used to people food scraps, he
balked at taking his antibiotics until he was enticed with canned catfood.
He is calm, relaxing, all systems are go and he is eating well. Who wouldn't
served homemade chicken stock and biscuits? (bless Sylvia). After a few more
days of R&R, I will bring Pedro home.
I need to give an enormous thank you to MY Rescuers! I would still be stuck
between a rock and a hard place if not for Keith & Mickey getting Vanna
White & me out of a real jam. Thank you guys!

FRANKY UPDATE!
You may recall Little Franky, our tragic West End girl, who was sent to the
mainland for cancer treatments. Well, the chemo therapy shrunk the tumors,
they were surgically removed, she is repaired and spayed. Now that Franky is
no longer in pain, has been treated with kindness and has lost her fear, she
is coming home!!!! Dr. Calderon said she is a very nice dog, very friendly
and tranquillo, he likes her........:) So, we have Ten Days to find her
furever home. She will do well in a quiet, calm environment, with time to
build trust. She is a very pretty dog, 25 lbs soaking wet, if that. Please
help find her a home. Email me for her photos. Thank you again to RH & Patty
Franklin and Joanne Clement for sponsoring her. You literally saved her
life.
We have not been able to resolve the problem of getting donations to
Honduras from outside the country without hefty transaction fees. So, in the
meantime we have set up a Paypal account in the states with my most trusted
friend and fellow animal rescuer. Francine will mail me the donations

Asking again, I never got any volunteers to build the Dog House Donation
Boxes. I don't want to take any funds away from actual animal rescue but if
I hire a local carpenter to build the boxes, would anyone be interested in
paying for one? We would even put your name on it. It is a way to generate
alot more funds as visitors deposit left over Lempiras when they leave our
tropical isle. All comments, suggestions and feedback appreciated.
Unbelievably, my camera and equipment have been stolen. I am sorry, but
there will be no photos of Pedro because of this setback.
As you are aware, RRR is about all animals in need. We have 5 calico mixed
breed cats up for adoption. They have been spayed and neutered. Calicos are
a delightful, playful breed. Let me know if you have room in your heart for
one or two or five............
It feels wonderful to report two more happy stories..

After the very humid weather last week.This week has been a bit cooler and with nice ENE breeze,unfortunately this has effected cruise ship arrivals to Mahogany bay.I have been told its a very narrow channel for this ships to enter and they have to reverse in.
I hope it calms down a bit tomorrow at least for the many business owners there.

Ok, so some around here said they wanted some
breeze since it has been so calm and hot lately with 84 F and heat index into
the 100's. Well now with 20 to 25 knots out of the East and gusts even higher
they are now wishing for some moderation. 2 days running and it looks like
Tuesday will be the day it finally moderates for at least a few
days.
Rain chance is nil for the next few days, typical
dry season for us.
