Greetings from the southwest! Here in Bani it is raining, so what else is new? It rained a lot last night and thoughout the morning. I took a patient to the hospital and on the way home it felt as if I was driving through rivers as the unpaved streets were full of water. There were not many vehicles either. I had my dyke of cement blocks out to prevent the water coming in the house so we were okay. Our street was almost full of water, running quite quickly. The rain stopped in the early afternoon and I went down to see the river. I think it rose about fifteen feet and running very swiftly. The city had dredged the river and piled up dirt on either side so no houses were lost. It wasn't as bad as Noel in 2007 but if it had continued to rain the way it did this morning, it would have been. It looks
from the map that we will still have some more rain but hopefully not a lot more. I feel so sorry for poor Haiti. |

Kind of an unpredictible day here with the morning staying pretty much cloud covered and a light breeze. By noon the breeze had picked up a bit...nothing strong, actually quite nice! Rain has begun to fall in short 2 minute bursts. Likely to be a wet eve and Saturday. No localized flooding. The moto conchos are still out in numbers, thus that says alot about the little rainfall so far today.

We are under solid overcast with very light rain and moderate gusts of wind. No doubt things will get more interesting when Tomas passes in about 13 hours - everything always happens in the middle of the night!!! After reports of flooding in Sabaneta, we could only see boggy areas, although the rivers had been 3 ft higher judging by the muddy marks on the banks. The authorities have been lowering the levels in the dams to help them cope with the expected rain. Take care everyone! |

In Sosúa and Puerto Plata since yesterday we
have rain and grey skies for most of the time. There was heavy rain from
time to time all
night long. It´s gonna be a wet couple of days over
here.
The goverment has issued early warnings for the zone of
Punta Salinas to Pedernales for all water activities to be cancelled until
Tomas passes.
Today the goverment said to the people to not loose
intres in Tomas even if it now is a tropical depression.
We´ll see what happens in the next 72h.

Good morning,
Apparently Thomas will affect Hispaniola (island being shared by Dominican
Republic and Haiti). Current models put this system passing very close to
Barahona's peninsula and approach to Haiti after that, it gets me sad because
that country have gone thru much and now it's cholera outbreak...
Let's keep an eye over this system.
Stay tuned...

Seems I may have been gloating a bit about the nice sunny weather we have had while many of you were under clouds and rain. Lat night the skies lit up for as far as I could see, followed by periods of rain overnight...heavy around 1am. This morning, dreary skies and now a windless light rain. Looks like this will last through the day. Good day to clean the house before my wife returns home!!!.

With all this talk of rain and cloud, just thought I might pipe in and mention that for the past 5 days we have had literally perfect weather here on the east in Bavaro/Punta Cana. My arms and neck sport a bright red sunburn from a Sunday round of golf at Iberostar and yeterdays moto ride high into the mountains near Miches.
Thank you to all of you along the rim who have steered the latest weather maker northward!

I finally got around to washing my CRV last Monday. Since then, we have only had continous clouds and showers (heavy at times). It does not look like this is going to change for the next 4 or 5 days. Today the air feels drier and cooler...winds returning to the east. Overcast with the sun doing it's best to shine a little UV through, but loosing the battle.

Good evening,
My day was crazy at work so I forgot to issue a report earlier...
Today was very rainy at commuting (7:30 am) we had a very heavy downpour with
spectacular lightings and thunders striking the metropolitan area, my God I
remember driving next to the "Jardín Botánico" (Botanic Garden) and I saw those
white flashes striking in that zone full of trees, lot of people exercising got
soaked (Botanic Garden is used by many for exercise walk and jogging, it has 6
km of perimeter surrounded by nature). It was a slow commute to my work place,
and the day was pretty much wet, with light rain.
There have being mudslides already, some roads have suffered damage, but I do
not have accurate info right now.
Currently is raining again, seems it won't stop for now.

The breeze has certainly picked up this week, actually reminding me of November weather. Very comfortable. There have been a few heavy downpours scattered about the region but the "drive in - drive out" in 2 minute types. This morning's sunrise was a visual delight for early risers, but also a sign that the day should remain unsettled.

Been kind of an odd couple of days, with promising sunshine followed by some pretty heavy downpours. This has resulted in a fair anount of road flooding, as they have built curbs along the streets and left nowhere for the water to escape...typical DR planning! LOL
I was on tour yesterday with a great group. Macao beach was even too rough for the surfers...in fact, right now I can hear the dull roar of the ocean ( i am 5 minutes walk from the beach), thus I think the seas will remain on the rough side for today.
The air has a nice feel to it this morning, much drier than last night, thus I hope those vacationing and living here on the east coast can enjoy the complete day. -- Punta Cana Mikes Dominican Adventure

Always interesting to follow the paths of these storms. Of course they have not read the computer models and dont know what the rules are supposed to be! So here in our North East coast peninsula we are experiencing some fresh strong winds and nasty grey skies with rain showers. Seas are big and the beach is disappearing fast-!! We are surrounded by reefs which normally protect us very well and I am watching the waves pound those outer reefs and I can see some obvious very strong currents which look dangerous! It never ceases to amaze me how quickly our seascapes change, yesterday was clear water and blue. Thoughts are with all Bermudians, please keep safe as it doesnt look like you are going to escape this inevitable beast. Prepare well and batten down your hatches. Good luck.

Good evening,
Days are again as hot and humid as usual, the heat sensation is making things very uncomfortable for those who adventure outside of a cool and dry office with A/C, since I work on the field (I am an Engineer) I can tell you this, everyday I arrive at my home smelling funny.
So, Gaston is falling apart, those are good news, at the beginning, I thought this could be a potential hit due to the trajectory he was following, if it regenerates, there's a long road to become something serious BUT, nature is nature and Hurricane forecast is not an exact science as Dave said.
Earl is threating the east coast United States, I have plenty of family (aunts, uncles, cousins, lots of cousins) living on New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York, so is inevitable that this system makes me worry about them. My thoughts and prayers too you guys!
Stay tuned...

To say the worst is over is kind of like saying we are unaware of the next punch coming! Although sunny hot and sticky today, the general scuttlebutt around the bar is that many of us have the heebee jeebees about Gaston. It has been some time now since a hurricane effected this area and we are due. Gaston is showing rapid development and we...who are aware, have already started the stocking of water and dry noodles and filling the tanks. There is only 2 roads into this region, which in turn become one and Having seen what a simple rodeo does to traffic...movement will be next to impossible.
I really hope that we are being overly cautious....time will tell.

We woke up this morning to strong winds and showers that kept many at home.
As Earl continued to travel North-West, the North coast of the Dominican Republic felt some of the winds on Earl's tails until just a few minutes ago.
There were reports of some palm trees and other trees bending and falling. But the rains and winds were not enough to cause any severe damage. Now, thought the ocean still looks furious and intimidating, but inviting to many adventurous surfers, the wind seems to have stopped or slowed down considerably.
The sun came out for a couple of minutes, but it's getting dark again, by the moving clouds.

We had a little rain but the sun is now popping out
from time to time. The ocean is really rough. All water sports and swimming are
banned for the day but I did see some crazy wind surfers out there this

badly needed. Some storms bring sand and others take it away. Lets hope the

Well, seems we have once again been spared from the wrath of a major hurricane. Yesterday afternoon I drove through an intense, but short-lived downpour. Other than that a a few very brief showers yesterday, nothing unusual. The stars were even out last night! Overnight...dead calm. Woke this morning to uniform gray clouds and light drizzle, punctuated by the odd heavier spell. Life is going on as if nothing is close. No localized flooding, no broken branches, simply a few palm frons laying around, but then again, they are dead and would fall off on any other day as well.
I guess it is a good sit at the carwash and play dominos day!
I am greatly concerned though about the invest off of Africa. Just a hunch, but something makes me want to stock up on water and candles. Should know better by Thursday!

Good morning,
I was expecting rain during the night, but nothing happened, the sky was clear (7AM) but right now is getting party cloudy, no wind, no signs of a Cat-4 monster churning close to our northeast. It seems like the southcoast will skip the TS winds, I don't know how you folks are doing up there (Puerto Plata, Samana's peninsula or Nagua town in María T. Sánchez prov.), but I hope things don't get nasty.
Chances of rain are high of course, past experiences scenarios have shown that even we dodge a tropical system, the worst happens well beyond the system has gone away (did I say that right? poor English, sorry), example, tails! At this moment, I see that Earl has a big tail to its north, if it does't move fast enough to the north, we could get hit by Earl's tail.
ONAMET is keeping a warning in coastal areas, specially in low land near sea, that is Nagua, Matancitas and Cabrera, I suppose northcoast is getting its own high tide show.
Stay tuned...

Good morning, well we woke up to a complete whiteout and could not see anything at all for about an hour. Strong winds and heavy rain, rain still continuing as I write. Internet was out but seems to be back now. We do not feature still on NHC advisories yet we are really experiencing high seas, strong wind gusts and rain. We are a peninsula here on the North East of Dominican Republic and perhaps more vulnerable than the other parts of the mainland. The official closest point of approach is still a couple of hours away and on CNN we just saw that Earl appears to be reforming so we will wait for next advisory to be sure it is moving well away!! Pleased to hear most of you fared OK but Earl is now on its way past other islands and seems determined to afffect as many islands as it can!!

Well early reports from most of you seem at least as though you have escaped too much damage. For us it is still wait and see if the big turn Northwards takes place. However since yesterday our beaches were several feet less and we have real waves and swells. The strongest winds we have felt for many months are blowing here and there is a much cooler air than before. Out goverment has issued an alert for our area and we expect to have strong sea swells at the very least. Good luck to Puerto Rico this evening as the storm takes effect for you.
We are hoping for a near miss but we are still monitoring carefully. Take care and be safe everyone.

Good morning,
My thoughts and prayers for people on northern Antilles.
Our National Weather Office (Onamet) in conjunction with National Emergency
Center (COE) will have a meeting with the Press around 10 to 11 am to discuss
the contingency plans for approaching Earl to our country, let's wait and see
what happens.
Meanwhile according to all forecasts, there's a slight chance to TS winds on
the Northeast portion of the island, that is San Cristobal to La Altagracia
(south coast) and La Altagracia to Puerto Plata or probably on entire north
coast, depending on how rapidly Earl gain strength.
As of current conditions, there's an unusual fresh breeze north to south,
clouds are also moving in that motion, I am not an expert but I think is
because of Earl, skies are gorgeous.

Good evening,
Earl is a Cat 1 hurricane but telling from all forecasts, is not going to hit the Dominican Republic but there's a low chance (5 to 10% according to NHC site), that TS winds will be felt on the east portion of our homeland, specially on Cibao area and north coast. ONAMET is issuing advisories from Cabo Engaño to Samaná (Atlantic ocean side) and Cabo Engaño to La Romana (Caribbean sea side) including Saona island.
Closest point will be next Tuesday around 5:00pm local time from Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, Espaillat and Puerto Plata.
According to all tools and information available, Earl will not be nothing more than rain and probably some wind gusts.

Good morning,
Tropical Storm Earl has sustained winds of 97 kph, and is moving west, posing a threat for northern Antilles and maybe for the Dominican Republic's north coast. The more time it takes for it to turn NW, the bigger is the threat for our homeland.
Local authorities are paying close attention to this system and might start issuing warning later today or early tomorrow. I am looking for information about Earl each time with more frequency as its getting me a little bit anxious if this would be a "dodge the bullet", "scratch the coast" or "direct hit" case, though as current models says, there's a higher chance that this system will hit the "crash cushion" and change course.

Good afternoon you all!
Santo Domingo is currently having a gorgeous day with sunshine everywhere, if I
were to the beach, it would be perfect. Not anything special developing 'near'
"La Española" (island name in Spanish) but according to our national weather
office, winds coming from east northeast combined with daylight heat, will
provoke isolated showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon, in my experience
that would be around 3 or 4 pm.
Something to watch far in the Atlantic, but is too soon to tell yet how will
things unfold later this week with it.
Yesterday we had a hot and melting-like day, but by 4pm it was interrupted for
30 minutes by a large thunderstorm that poured its fury large area of great

Good morning!
Santo Domingo (and probably the rest of the country) is waking up again under rain. This time I had trouble sleeping and can tell it has being raining the whole night. Yesterday a lot of stories of flooding in several streets. The most chocking was this one of a woman and her 3 year old child almost died drowned when she accidentally drove into a deep flooded street, volunteers that were in the area helped the to get out of the vehicle, later fire fighters pull the Honda CR-V out of the pond.

Hi all. Well here on the North coast, Samana peninsula have seen rain constantly for 2 days already. The blob has been sitting right over us it seems and moving very slowly. As we have already has a whole years rain in the first 6 months of 2010, things are pretty soggy around here!! In an already slow high season for tourists this really doesnt help anybody very much!! My own son who just flew in from UK for 2 weeks in the sun has yet to see it!!! Hoping that we see the last of it pass through today. Good luck to the Bahamas who will be getting wet too after us and all those in its future path. Keep dry everyone!

Tonight the "blob" dropped 3 inches of rain on us in an hour with high winds - fortunately the towel brigade were up to the job and now we just have a steady rain. This year has been abnormal with the June rainfall this year outside the norm.
June 2007 3 inches Annual total 112.35
June 2008 6.5 inches 95.45
June 2009 3.4 inches 86.8
June 2010 22.5 inches 83.3 to the end of June!!!
With today's 3 inches we have equalled the annual figure for 2009 and it is still raining.
But it mostly rains in late afternoon or at night, and the days are gloriously hot and sunny. |

Good morning!
The rain keeps coming, and our streets and avenues are saying "can't take it
anymore!!", for those citizens outside, we are using hash #lluviaRD on Twitter
to alert everybody which spots to avoid.
Our local weather office is saying the there's a wide spread alert on the
country, flash floods and land slides.
I'm at a Hospital so can't use my phone that much, stay tuned for more...

Well after most of the islands suffered extreme periods of drought through the winter months, we here in the Northern peninsula of Samana had more rain than I can ever remember in a winter! Now we are having more rain than I can remember in this summer season!!! Normally we do not get as much rain as the South coast at this time of year. We are wet wet and wetter!!! The blob seems to be just hanging around, but right over our heads! Lots of localised flooding, and very bad for all the tourists who come to lounge on our beautiful beaches. Personally I feel we have way more than our fair share of the wet stuff in the last 6 months. Oh well I guess the sun will come out one day, but it has been 4 days now I think since we saw it: Hope you are a lot dryer than us and stay that way.

Good evening,
Since the very start of the day, on the longest day of the country and in most of this hemisphere (summer solstice), the day has being gray, cloudy, rain, few hours of sun if you sum the periods. The temperature has drooped to 26 degrees, which normally on a 35 degrees typical summer day, by this time is usually on 30 degrees, so is chilly, for us. Local weather service is alerting residents near water sources to stay alert, from few days ago, and still.
According to the forecasts, it is expected that this system affecting us will become a tropical depression, but for us, just rain, for the most of the time, no winds, no long periods of heavy rain.
Stay tuned...

Good morning,
Woke up this morning with the bad news from our National Weather Office that high temps will continue to suffocate us. I am already missing those cloudy or rainy days (not that much), where you could drink a hot cocoa or coffee without sweating it out later on.
I little story, last Thursday, was holiday (Corpus Christi), I didn't have to work, but still woke up very early, due to heave thunders, I was in my bed saying stuff like "wow, damn, Jesus" complaining about the noisy thunders and heavy, heavy rain. I decided to jump out from my bed to brew some coffee, it was 7:15am, everything was a little bit dark, when I was going downstairs (two story house) I didn't notice our first floor was flooded! I suddenly step into the water, I said omg wth is happening, my sleepers got soaked, the water layer was like 10 cm thick, we do not use carpet, our floor is granite, so in two ours everything was dry and clean, but my back, oh my back...
Apparently, the rain was so hard, so strong, and so long, our backyard drains did not supply for the demand, no electronic equipment got damaged, but in my dad building, the water leaked inside the building and flooded common areas and the elevator, they didn't have service for three days and it is a 10 floor building, imagine that.
The next day it was sunny like never before, and since then, the heat is suffocating us.

- Earthquake Shake

I know I have been known to come home in the early hours
with a few pints or ounces in me, but last night, being pre-election night with
all the local bars closed, I was a good boy!
I had just drifted off to sleep, when I awoke for some
unknown reason. At first I thought it was the vibrate mode on my phone…then
the room started to vibrate at moderate strength…..a rumble in the air.
It lasted for approx 20 seconds…the longer it lasted, the more concerned
I was getting! Then, sudden silence.
I thought immediately…an earthquake and a close one.
This was the strongest tremor I have felt here since arriving 6 years ago.
5.8 in Puerto Rico…83 miles away
All is well here, aside from a few uncertain moments.
As for the weather….looks worse on the maps than it is
in reality. Some sun and cloud and hardly any rain.
Cheers
PuntaCana Mike
