- warning signs started 2 days prior to the big 8.9 quake
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 11 Mar 2011 21:50:19 -0000
During the hurricane off season I track other natural events of mass
destruction such as earthquakes

On this list you can see that a 7.2 quake started on Wednesday and since that
moment allot more shakes occurred prior to the big 8.9 this morning in Japan

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php

therefore never ever say "ah well.." and let your guard down...

Much closer to home...another noteworthy event that we need to keep an eye on
is the sudden increase of seismic activity due North of Curacao...

There are no buoys between Curacao and St.Maarten to track the event of a
Tsunami heading towards Curacao... so everyone venturing towards Canoa en the
underwater grotto of Kristoffel Park ought to be a biut careful round now...

Tsunami's can travel at a speed of 500 Mph aka 800 km/h, and in deep water they
are unnoticeable. Only in shallows are they extremely dangerous...even small
Tsunami's of 2 ft high are extremely dangerous since they are pushed by extreme
large bodies of water...

godspeed to all

Marcus

To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Warning and Advisory #4 issued 03/11/2011 at 12:51AM PST

The warning and advisory status regions have changed in this message.

The Tsunami Warning continues in effect for the coastal areas of California and
Oregon from Point Concepcion, California to the Oregon-Washington border.

The Tsunami Warning continues in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska from
Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles W of Adak) to Attu, Alaska.

The Tsunami Advisory continues in effect for the coastal areas of California
from the California-Mexico border to Point Concepcion, California.

The Tsunami Advisory continues in effect for the coastal areas of Washington,
British Columbia and Alaska from the Oregon-Washington border to Amchitka Pass,
Alaska (125 miles W of Adak).

A Tsunami Warning means that all coastal residents in the warning area who are
near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately inland to higher
ground and away from all harbors and inlets including those sheltered directly
from the sea. Those feeling the earth shake, seeing unusual wave action, or the
water level rising or receding may have only a few minutes before the tsunami
arrival and should move immediately. Homes and small buildings are not designed
to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures.

All residents within the warned area should be alert for instructions broadcast
from their local civil authorities. A tsunami has been recorded.

A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or
waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant,
widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may
be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for
several hours after the initial wave arrival.

At 9:46 PM Pacific Standard Time on March 10, an earthquake with preliminary
magnitude 8.9 occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan . (Refer to the
United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.) This
earthquake has generated a tsunami which could cause damage to coastal regions
in a warning or advisory. The waves are expected to first reach Shemya, Alaska
at 12:13 AM AKST on March 11. Estimated tsunami arrival times and maps along
with safety rules and other information can be found on the WCATWC web site.

Measurements or reports of tsunami activity:

 Location Lat. Lon. Time Amplitude
------------------------ ----- ------ ------- -----------
 Tosashimizu Japan 32.8N 132.9E 0747UTC 00.9FT/00.27M
 Tokai Japan 33.8N 137.6E 0645UTC 00.8FT/00.25M
 Ofunato Japan 39.0N 141.8E 0605UTC 10.8FT/03.29M
 Hanasaki Japan 43.3N 145.6E 0643UTC 09.3FT/02.82M
 Boso Japan 34.8N 140.8E 0609UTC 02.6FT/00.78M

Time - Time of measurement.
Amp. - Tsunami amplitudes are measured relative to normal sea level. It is NOT
crest-to-trough wave height. Values are given in both meters (M) and feet (FT).

DEEP OCEAN SENSORS INDICATE A LARGE TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED.
Tsunamis can be dangerous waves that are not survivable. Wave heights are
amplified by irregular shoreline and are difficult to forecast. Tsunamis often
appear as a strong surge and may be preceded by a receding water level.
Mariners in water deeper than 600 feet should not be affected by a tsunami.
Wave heights will increase rapidly as water shallows. Tsunamis are a series of
ocean waves which can be dangerous for several hours after the initial wave
arrival. DO NOT return to evacuated areas until an all clear is given by local
civil authorities.

Pacific coastal regions outside California, Oregon, Washington, British
Columbia, and Alaska should refer to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
messages for information on the event.

This message will be updated in 60 minutes or sooner if the situation warrants.
The tsunami message will remain in effect until further notice. For further
information stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, your local TV or radio stations,
or see the WCATWC web site.

- Low temps

Was surprised to  check my phone this morning and seeing 22 Degrees Celsius for the current temperature in Curacao.
Normally we get these types of temperatures when it has been raining non-stop. Pretty impressive stuff since it didn’t rain last night.
Just to make sure my phone isn’t going crazy, I checked with the NOAA website: http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/TNCC.html

And at am indeed there was a reading of about 22 degrees. Please see attached images.

- Rainy Christmas and Lihtning show at Night
  • By Devin Balentina <blue13x at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 26 Dec 2010 11:54:30 -0400
Perhaps not strange for such a wet year, but I don’t think I can remember any previous Christmas days in Curacao were we had rain throughout the day we completely grey skies. I’m 26 years old and can’t think of one time (that I can remember) of that happening.
Even surprised when we got a pretty active (and loud thunderstorm) and heavy rain between 4 and 5 AM.

Judging by the satellite images, it seems like it will continue today and maybe well into Tuesday.

- 30% Chance of development

I thought my eyes were deceiving me yesterday, but the NHC: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ seems to agree that the swirl out in the Atlantic has some chance, in fact the chances are 30%.
It did look much healthier with thunderstorms wrapping around the center yesterday, but today it doesn’t look as impressive. Potential development in December?
Another sign how things seem to be changing.

I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see the pictures in the local newspaper. Funnel clouds in December? So close to Christmas?

I guess we can add this to this year’s record breaking rains, very high temperatures, very low temperatures, funnel clouds, lot’s of lightning and even damaged cause by funnel clouds. What a year!

So if that wasn’t enough, what’s that coming from the Atlantic? Is that a swirl?

Today I had planned to release 4 (four) seabirds which were orphaned after
Hurricane Tomas and I have subsequently raised from baby into adulthood. In the
past 3 weeks they were trained in catching fish themselves and which are good
and which to avoid. The all graduated their training with flying colors and
today one was to be released on the grounds of Superclubs Breezes and two at
Marriott and one at Avila Hotel.

The downpour of rain postponed the release.

It has rained a wee bit last night, this morning and currently with dark clouds
overhead it is raining puddytawts and dawgs again...even producing thunder.

GODspeed to all.

- nothing out of the ordinary
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 17 Dec 2010 05:18:49 -0000
The weather has brought a few light showers at Banda Riba and the remaining 70%
of the island enjoyed warm sunny skies. The hot months are gone and nothing but
warm weather in the day and cool breezy at night is currently on the weather
menu for the coming week.

One of the viewers of this page at stormcarib emailed me about big waves from
NW...but after reviewing the weather data it appears those big waves will only
directly affect the Southern shores of Haiti and Cuba and are way out of range
of Curacao...as a matter of fact the long range forecast shows nothing out of
the ordinary for Curacao this weekend and the coming week.

However if you are heading towards the beaches of Southern New Zealand...the
waves are 35 feet tall over there...yup 12 meters tall...can you imagine?

GODSPEED to all.

- 73.8 mm rain so far...and more on the way
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 5 Dec 2010 03:34:44 -0000
My rain gauge shows 73.8 mm (almost 3 inches) worth of rain between 1 am and
1030pm for today December 4th 2010. During Tropical Storm Tomas we endured a
whole lot more. The difference between then and now is that the ground is
saturated and the 73.8 mm has nowhere to go. This means that the road between
Brievengat and Rondeklip going past Festival Center was flooded by 40cm of
rain. The stoplights at Biesheuvel were flooded by as much as 50 cm. Emmastad
was flooded by as much as 35 cm. The roads around Kabouterbos were flooded and
resembled raging rivers swallowing up a car all the way to its windows. The
Schoutbij Nachtdoorwanweg was flooded including all streets in Damacor area.
The road between the Jewish Synagoge and the school where Emily votes was fit
for white water rafting. People were windsurfing...no joke...literally
windsurfing on the Chuchubiweg (I have pictures and video)

And more rain is heading our way.

Maybe people will finally wake up to the fact that Mother Nature is giving us a
heads up warning... if we don't do our best to discourage and discontinue the
destruction of the natural world that surrounds us, we will continue to
experience bad weather like we have endured so far...

Godspeed to all

  • Date: Sat, 4 Dec 2010 11:39:21 -0800 (PST)
The rains stopped early afternoon for couple of hours, but approx. half an hour ago, at about 3pm, started again with Tomas-like heavy rains. Looking at a radar loop it seems like we are going to be sandwiched with rain from all directions, so it seems like it will continue until this night or even tomorrow.

It is dark as if it is evening, really weird. A lot of people are of course complaining about the rains that just keep on coming since Tomas. I like the temperature change to lower degrees, after having had extreme drought and heat for almost a year. And the island is extremely green (but lots of mosquitos).

I really feel sorry for the people having troubles in their homes and also for the many stray dogs and other animals that are completely soaked out there.

Today is a day before Sinterklaas evening, 5 December when the kids get presents 'from him' as Marcus already explained earlier. Lots of people wanted to probably do last minute shopping today, but this afternoon is not a very good idea. I can only recommend staying at home because of flooding everywhere.

Wow, during writing this it even started raining heavier.

Ajo,
Natalie

Hi folks,
Hurricane season is over but it left us a lot of rain.
Early today it started with heavy downpour and up to now we are having some light
shower. Looking at the satellite system there is a lot more to come.
Again there are a lot of flooding because of the saturated grounds.
To say it simpler, there is no space for more water.
Let's hope the best for those who are suffering due to this situation.

" oh no...skywater, now I'll never get to sleep..." from the movie The Land of
the Lost

On December 4th 2010 a wave of bad weather formed onland in Venezuela at 1 am
and started moving north towards us. At 5 am the first rains came down and
right on its heels a cold front which caused the temperature to drop from 27
degrees Celsius to the current 23 degrees Celsius. Hace mucho frio comapdres!!

We are used to 32 C weather so 23 Celsius is a wee bit chillier than we are
used to..

The rains will continue for awhile...and on sunday there is a 70% chance for
more rain. On Monday and Tuesday so far it looks like a sunny day....I wish to
caution that it looks sunny so far...if the forecast changes for the not so
sunny I will let you know.

Godspeed to all

  • By Devin Balentina <blue13x at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 4 Dec 2010 09:28:19 -0400
What a year this has been, right? I have never seen this much rain and to my surprise it just keeps on going!
It has been raining for a good portion of the night and it still raining as I write this. Judging by the radar image below it looks like
it will probably continue for a good portion of the day. As for the temperature, it’s a rather cool 23 degrees Celsius. At 7AM it was a cool 24 degrees,
but surprisingly the temperature seems to be dropping as the sun came up. Most people here on the island don’t have water boilers, so it’s going to be a very cold and painful or many shower this morning  :)

Another observation I had is that I noticed that we seem to be having very heavy showers, but none of these are accompanied by lightning/thunder. It’s as if the lightning activity just...stopped. Weird.

The rainshowers have arrived to Bonaire first and you can see the orads of downtow Bonaire have flooded

http://www.bonairewebcams.com/DowntownCamLarge.php

In Curacao the downpour varies from heavy in bandariba (eastside) to a light drizzlein bandabou (westside).

Nevertheless currently a 70 chance of total accumulation of 100 to 150 mm in the next 72 hours....yes it is a slow moving low pressure area that will stick around for awhile. Then we'll have a short break and there are several waves of low pressure areas right behind each other heading our way.

Right now I'm heading out on the road with my tow line and first aid kit to the areas where roads face flash floods to assist the people who don't follow the news... :))  (this time I'll bring a camera along...)

- 80 to 120 mm rain this coming weekend
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 26 Nov 2010 18:00:30 -0000
Allright...

65 percent chance of 80 to 120 mm of rain starting Friday evening until
midnight on sunday!!

what does this mean?

- if you spot high water, DO NOT take the risk, make a u-turn and find an
alternate route. Flash floods can create dangerous driving conditions on
certain roads.

- dams that are filled to capacity can break

- areas were ground is saturated can expect flooding

- go get: baby supplies, pet supplies, food that does not require refrigeration

- please tend to the elderly and handicapped family members, make sure that
they have everything they need before the rains come

- don't allow children to play unattended if you live near any dams or if the
ground is saturated and you have big trees in the yard

- evacuate pets and farm animals to higher ground

  • By Devin Balentina <blue13x at hotmail.com>

The weather pattern here in Curacao has been all about rain off and on, the entire day. Heavy rain for a few minutes, it stops, and the cycle starts all over again.
This has caused the temperature to stay relatively cool and the humidity high.

Below a picture while driving. When it rains it can get quite heavy, making  for difficult driving conditions.

- About that 22 degree temperature....
  • By Devin Balentina <blue13x at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2010 03:24:54 -0400
As of 3 am it’s raining and judging by the time of year it doesn’t take a rocket scientist or in this case a meteorologist to know that it’s going to continue raining off and on, most of the day.
About that 22 degrees Celsius temperature Marcus, the official Meteorological department of Curacao publishes the high and lows for the past 24 hours in the Amigoe newspaper and they
seem to agree with my Nokia and my measurements that indeed there was a 22 degree low and a high of 30. Please see attached photo of the Amigoe newspaper for the details. Also, remember that the temperature will vary by location and will depend on many factors, but the official measured temps seems to agree with that 22 degrees though.

The difference between 22 and 23.4 degrees Celsius is in my opinion very very small and and not perceptible by humans at least and quite chilly by our standards.

As for the weather app, you need a Nokia N900, it’s not available on other platforms.

- Sinterklaas...I really really hope it doesn't rain
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 20 Nov 2010 04:45:41 -0000
I have never seen a zwarte piet with other attire than a bag and a roe. This is
prolly the first time we will see a zwarte piet with an umbrella.I hope that
the parents have prepared by bringing raincover for their kids. Allot of kids
have been looking forward to this day for a whole year. I really really hope it
doesn't rain, but I have no control over the weather...I just forecast it.

If it does rain, the kids will for the first time ever see that a zwarte piet
is not of African origin, but actually a non African who climbs down a chimney
and his skin turns black from the black ashes, sooth, and black tar in the
chimney, then collects the carrot for Saint Nicholas' horse, depending how good
behaved the kid has been all year the zwarte piet places a gift in the kids'
shoe, then climbs back up the chimney to do the process all over again.

This festivity really sets us apart from the other neighbors in the Caribbean.
This is not Santa Clause. This is something totally different.

zie ginds daar komt de stoomboot uit Spanje weer aan... Het brengt Sint
Nikolaas, ik zie em al staan...met z'n paraplu.

:))

So far I received 61 emails from concerned parents asking what time the rains
will happen in the morning in Curacao.

You see Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) is expected to arrive by boat with 50
"zwarte pieten" in Annabaai at approx 8 am and we expect around 4000 kids to
attend the arrival ceremony.

The weather forecasts call for 80% chance of heavy rain at 5 am which is right
about the time they are setting things up and 60% chance of thunderstorms at 8
am which is when ol Saint Nicholas will arrive on a tugboat which can hold up
to 20 people inside and up to 40 on the deck where there is no raincover. I
wonder how they will solve this. I have never seen a zwarte piet with other
attire than a bag and a roe. This is prolly the first time we will see a zwarte
piet with an umbrella.

Annie from Bonaire...I think you meant to point to this link:
http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=56

This is for Curacao: http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?go=1&vs=1&sc=9466

And this is for Aruba: http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=55

A word of caution about the windguru forecasts!!! They only show daytime data
between sunrise and sunset. Windguru is completely blind between 8pm and 5am,
this means that the rains and bad weather could be coming allot sooner so what
out with your interpretation of what you see on windguru. The storm could be
coming allot sooner than 5 am.

Devin, where did you measure 22 degrees? I think you need to recalibrate your
nokia. The temperature did not drop below 23.4. Since the lapse rate is 1
degree celsius per 153, 846 meters, you could only have measured 22 degrees
Celsius if you were sitting on top of Mount Kristoffel :)) or in an
airconditioned building/vehicle. Maybe you measured dew-point? The dew-point
did drop to 22 degrees at Sunset Valley and to 21 degrees even at Bapor Kibra.
Anywho I want that app even if it measures one degree off the mark. Please
lemme know where I can get it.

Aruba... if windguru is correct, you guys will get the worst of the
thunderstorms, so keep an eye out between midnight and 4am.

Yesterday it rained pretty much the entire day, allowing for the temperature to drop considerably.
As expected, this morning at around 5 am our outside thermometer showed an impressive 22 degrees Celsius! Even my Nokia N900’s weather widget showed the same temperature. This time of
year it’s pretty rare to see it even drop to 24, so I was quite impressed with such a low temperature....for Curacao standards of course.

Would be interesting to see it dip to around 19. Will it? I guess we’ll just have to see.

platforms I am getting forecasts that call for a 60 percent chance of 40 to 90
mm rain in the weekend on Saturday Nov 20 and Sunday Nov 21.

This emans that those who will head to Punda and Otrobanda to witness the
arrival of Saint Nikolaas on Nov 20th, should consider bringing rain ponchos
and umbrellas... and it will be windy up to 45 km/hour so that the rain will
fall diagonal and not straight down...

Yeppers the rains of 1999 - 2000 have returned.

- thunderstorm, funnel clouds and flash flood warning

On saturday Nov 13, Curacao experienced thunderstorms on several areas of
Curacao accompanied by light to moderate rain between 9 am and 3pm local time
(= GMT -4). In Soemboe two lightning strikes have been confirmed, and one in
Schelpwijk. On the road near Kloof a flash flood created a river crossing the
road. One vehicle tried to cross it and was swept away. Then anorther small bus
tried to cross too and got stuck on the shoulder. All persons involved did not
sustain any injuries other than embarrassment. :))

This morning on Nov 14th the thunderstorms arrived again between 3 am and 8 am.
So far one car was confirmed stuck in a flash flood river that crossed the
Perseusweg road next to the new Condominium Park that is under construction.
The persons in the vehicle are okay too.

If people continue to try to cross a river of water crossing roads, we will
continue reporting these incidents. Please use common sense and make a U-turn
and either wait for the river to stop or find an alternate route to where you
are going, or just head home... PLEASE.

The low pressure that I forecasted on Nov 10 to pup up as a storm on Nov 15th

- the past 3 days are NOT Tomas...so dont worry puhleez
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 9 Nov 2010 04:46:05 -0000
the bad weather system that I forecasted on Nov 4th has arrived two days
earlier on November 7th and is still lingering on in our area. This system is
NOT Tomas, which is long gone and heading north away from the Caribbean into
the Atlantic. On Saturday and Sunday we experienced winds and waves coming in
from southwest. At times the waves were rough causing fishermen hauling their
wooden boats out of the sea and to safety onto dry land. The weather was so
severe that the Curacao Amstel Bicycle Race had to be cancelled on Saturday and
took place on the next day on Sunday on an alternate route.

Currently we are experiencing thunder and some light to moderate rain in some
areas, whereas some areas are dry.

Tomas shook everyone up quite a bit. With every thunder or any blob on the
satellite map the people here in Curacao think Tomas is back again.

Right now we are just dealing with a pesky low pressure area that has a grip on
us for 3 days now, and it does not look like it will leave soon.

Put your mind at ease...it is not a rainfactory like Tomas was, but we do need
to take care that the southwestern wind can bring Portugese man of war and at
times high rough waves to the southern coastline.

I should not be doingthis right now during a lightning show, so I am signing
off right now...I just wanted to put everyone at ease that this is NOT
TOMAS...you guys/gals in Curacao can call me or sms me at any hour of the day
just like you all did just now...so don't worry...it will all beokay from here
on. November and December are the normal times of the year when we get a little
shower here and there, and a thunder here and there. So let's get some zzzz's
and tomorrow is another bright sunny day !!

- heavy rain this afternoon in Curacao
  • By Elton Sint Jago <curacaomaster at yahoo.com>

Most parts of the island experienced heavy thundershowers this afternoon
between 12:30 and 14:00. A few clouds formed above the island due to the lack
of wind and high temperatures. The clouds moved in eastern and southeastern
direction across the island.

Yesterday they issued a warning about heavy rainfall and lightning but
apparently only in the west they experienced heavy rain (Banda Bou). Aruba got
a lot of rain yesterday morning.

I attached a couple of photos I took today, enjoy!

Meteo has issued a warning that at about 1.30pm we could experience heavy rainfall again with thunder. We were just called by a friend warning us about bad weather, so I called another friend who also already heard from others. So everyone seems to sort of be panicky about it already.

But looking at radar loop rain seems to be moving away, so is this 'arm' of Tomas that was touching us again. But again: I am not a pro!

So: is it raining already somewhere on the island? Do we need to worry? It is 1.38pm now... our location: Salinja area.

I would like our weather station (meteo) to also have their special reports at least in English: there are so many tourists on island that also need to be able to read this, including inhabitants, like us, who speak only basic Papiamentu...sorry!

Please report about what you experience now and what we can expect.

- It's coming back...AGAIN?!
  • By "Devin Balentina " <blue13x at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 5 Nov 2010 15:32:15 +0000
As Tomas passed to the North of us, it activated an area that left
record breaking rainfall.
Now as it passes to the North (again) it will have swirling bands of rain that
can cause a lot of rain...again.
Curacao radar shows a large area of rain and thunderstorms over Aruba, heading
this way. This is basically the same scenario, but the opposite. So be prepared.

So....after exhaling a sigh of relief because Tomas's curve was not sending
seawaves towards our southern coastline... I ran a few computer generated
forecast models to figure out where Tomas would be today a week from now, and
lo and behold I am seeing a forecast popping up which indicates a 45% chance of
a low pressure area developing at 13.5 N and 71 W then head east or northeast
towards Aruba on Tuesday November 9th 2010.

At this time it looks like an invest in the model and it is too early to
forecast what this low pressure could become. Because Tomas was also forecasted
seven (7) days before you could see it on the satellite maps, I wish to urge
F.C. and crew to take a gander at this one too. Let's pray it will only cause a
lightning show visible due north wayyyy offshore of the northern coastline of
the ACB (Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire) islands.

Godspeed to all

And its raining again... got up at 7am, saw a grey sky on one side, some sun on the other side. But the grey side won. It is raining non-stop but very slow, not the pouring we had the other day.
Schools are still closed today: some had flooding problems and were to be closed anyway, like the pre-school department of Albert Schweitzer and the International School. Government wanted the roads to be available for rescue workers and such, to be able to get to the places where help is needed and to clear more stranded cars.
For the rest official shelters are still open for the few who still need it. The government will assess people's situations and provide financial support for those in serious need, so that is positive.
Most flooded areas are open again for traffic.

I hope the rain will not stay too long and keep on drizzling like this - then we will not have new problems.

Yesterday I saw the footage from St. Lucia filmed from a helicopter: I didn't know it was so bad, just thought some houses without a roof and some bridges collapsed. What a total devastation! I really feel sad for the people who suffered damages and losses!

On Curacao death toll was 3: one woman sadly drowned in her car!

- Tomas has passed, but it is not gone...
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 2 Nov 2010 23:31:19 -0000
On Saturday October 30 everyone said Tomas would be heading NW, and a minority
said that it would dip south instead.

Tomas went indeed SW instead towards Curacao.

Now everyone is saying Tomas is gone.

Is Tomas really gone? Once again a minority is saying: no!

Everyone forgets that the 3-day and 5-day computer generated forecast model
contains bubbles. In the center of each bubble there is an icon representing
the storm. It does not mean that the storm will be in that exact location.
Tomas will be in ANY area in that bubble for that particular time and day in
that computer generated forecast model bubble.

It is crucial that people understand this.

As a matter of fact in the cumulative trajectory Tomas was heading SW towards
Curacao since October 30, and the computer generated forecast model was
accurate in its prediction because Tomas was in the southern part of each
bubble.

The computer generated forecast model was accurately made by:
- the meteorological services of Curacao,
- the NHC,
- the NOAA,
- and other "amateur meteorologists in Curacao"

You never say "nothing of concern" is going to happen when the storm is still
very active and fore-casted to head towards Curacao. As a matter of fact most
of the citizens believed the media reports that nothing was going to happen...

IF everyone had been adequately warned, this would never have happened:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/30678425@N02/

This is my last post in regards to what happened, but not my last post in
regards what Tomas may do next.

the computer generated forecast model bubbles show it heading back towards
Curacao and then head NW towards J. Hogan in Santo Domingo

more on that on Wednesday/Thursday...

Good night everyone, Godspeed to all !

The pictures show a very BIG construction oversight of the water channel next
to the road of Zukkertuintje: if the water flows over the side of the water
channel, you can NOT see where the road ends and the waterchannel starts. As a
result of this a lady drove into the channel and drowned in her own car. My
condolences goes out to the family of this lady.

Please let's learn from this tragic event and create high barriers or add other
constructions so that vehicles, people, and pets on a leash can not
accidentally wash into this water channel that is supposed to drain water from
the flooded areas into the open sea.

- incredible path that Tomas is heading to next....
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 2 Nov 2010 19:41:59 -0000
I checked and rechecked and rechecked again...

The computer generated forecast models show a high chance that TOMAS will do
the follwoing next:

1. on wednesday/thursday it may stall and then head into direction of Curacao
and then curve towards the north east and head towards Haiti and Santo Domingo

2. then after passing Haiti and Santo Domingo's mainland Tomas has a high
chnace of reforming into a powerful hurricane and then head east towards Sint
Maarten.

Tomas wants to visit all 6 islands of the former Dutch Antilles...I don't think
this event has ever happened before...this is incredible if it turns out to be
an accurate forecast...

so let's pray it will not head towards Haiti where a half million people are
still camping in muddy fields after the devastating earthquake hit them not so
long ago...

- how to seal doors and windows if you live in areas that flood
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 2 Nov 2010 19:17:26 -0000
At kooyman megastore you can get MintCraft 100% silicone rubber sealant (50 yr)
to create a watertight seal between the door/window and the door/window frame
or concrete/metal/wood wall.

That is what prevented the river of water and mud from entering my home through
the 5 doors and prevented the rain coming through the windows. The rain came in
from the south instead of the normal easterly direction.

You can get similar watertight sealant silicone from Gomez Hardware, Building
Depot, Marchena Hardware, and/or sandbags at the garden centers.

Once more....it is best to be safe than sorry, so make preparations in advance,
because when the rain starts pouring down in such vast quantity that our island
is not used to....the water will become dangerous very fast as many motorists
have experienced.

People forget that their stalled vehicles cause emergency rescue teams and
ambulances not being able to reach the people who are in dire need of help
right away. Stalled vehicles blocking the road delay the rescue teams getting
where they are needed.

So when the rain starts coming down in vast quantities...do not go driving
around like disaster tourists.

Please get candles, radio/flashlight batteries, fresh water, diapers, medical

  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net

The thunderstorms arrived at my neighborhood Schelpwijk at 730 pm. Soon after
the power was cut off and the phone ceased working. The downpour was very very
heavy and lightning strikes were witnessed in the direction of Sunset Heights,
Eggs Farm Moderno, the Drag Race strip above the Brievengat Industrial Park.

Having sealed the doors and windows of my house on Saturday with special
silicone gel has proved itself well as a river of mud and debris invaded my
yard at about 10 pm. After having checked on the animals and my father in law
next door, and the direct neighbors I took a stroll in the rest of my
neighborhood and came across many people who had not made preparations for the
possible arrival of Tomas and were overwhelmed by the river of mud that was
coming down from the hills. They were mad and upset because they believed that
Tomas posed no threat after having followed the news reports such as this one
http://www.amigoe.com/artman/publish/artikel_80338.php

Anywho... last night I assisted people in my neighborhood with evacuating their
loved ones as much as possible because the fire department was overwhelmed by
the many calls and was unreachable by phone even 911 could not be reached.

Even though I wrote on this blog on Saturday October 30th that we'd get heavy
heavy rains... nobody else took preperations???

Yes I don't have a degree in meteorology, but still...when have my forecasts
been off the mark?

I hope that this was a wake up call for everyone, including the government...
that it is best to prepare for the worst and then call all clear AFTER the
storm has well passed our area...

This is a november to remember....and to LEARN from mistakes.

At about 10 pm lightning also came down, rain kept on going and going and going. We never seen this before. I felt so sorry for the neighborhoods we been through that already had so much flooding only 1 hour after the rain started. A lot of people were at restaurants and out and about.
But I must say that a radio station even had a poll yesterday where you had to say 'agree' or 'not agree' to "is the curacao government creating the panic" (about the upcoming weather), meaning they were wrong with their warnings: nothing was going to happen. Well, here you have it according to a newsflash I just hear on the radio:

salinja = flooded
schools: are oficially closed
mcb banks = are closed until at least 12 noon (further notice)
sta catharina = still without electricity since last night, possibly more areas like this
koraal specht = flooded. People have to evacuate to different location
deaths = 2 (one reddingswerker during work, 1 older person from a heart attack)
At Citro, groot davelaar: possibly another death of a helper during an evacuation when a wall collapsed on top of him (this is not confirmed)
zuikertuintje mall and trupial inn: flooded
centrum supermarket mahaai: flooded

biesheuvel: almost water free, but traffic lights not working
at the boulevard / nieuwe havenweg = flooded, but you can drive

general warning: please don't go out if you don't have to!

But it was unexpected: a sunny and warm day yesterday, all the way into the evening.

It is still raining, and it is getting even darker again. Still some thunder every now and then. On satellite it looks like it will continue through the day...

My best to all the people in those terrible flooding conditions, and with the tragic losses. We are soooo lucky, being just a little higher up!

Curacao is located at Lat/Lon: 12.2° N 69.0° W and the center of Tomas passed
us on Monday (see coordinate map below)

Last night the thunderstorm trailing Tomas arrived in Curacao causing so much
heavy rain that our island's inhabitants are not used to.

So far two deaths, power outages and flooding have been reported. All schools
have been closed, and it is not over yet....more bad weather is on its way.

- RAIN AND MORE RAIN

Rain and more rain we have never seen this kind of rain in Curacao
The rain is pouring and pouring people were calling the radio stations needing help because
their homes were flooded. The meteo department issued a flash flood warning late about 8.p.m.
most people were out and were caught on the road. It was a big surprise for us.
I was not home with my family and i got a call from my wife stating that my daughter's home was flooded
and she had a 2 months old baby i told them to call the fire brigade and ask for assistance. My wife told me
she went to fire department on foot in all that rain to ask for help. The fire brigade employee that was on duty
told her all he had at this moment is what he had on. My wife called me back and told me she was going for the baby
and take yo our home. I told her to stay put because walking in all this rain with a baby in all this lightning flashing around you
is dangerous. She said i am going for my grand daughter. So a friend and i decided to go to my daughters home and see how
we can help. The streets were so flooded that it was almost impossible to drive through all that water but when i almost arrive there
i saw my wife walking with the baby in her hands in all that flood water the baby well covered. I was so mad and told her you
could have been struck by lightning with that baby in your hands. She told me she had to take the risk because the house was almost
filled with water they had to stand up on the bed. So we took the baby to our home and my daughter went back home to prevent any one from coming in to her home in her absents.
The rain is still falling at this moment no thunder or lightning i have never seen anything like this in Curacao before the authorities
were caught with their pants down. I am now waiting to hear what kind of damaged will be reported this morning.

So long nice Caribbean people we are a strong nation and nothing will stand between us St. Lucia St.Vincent and Barbados will
all be on their feet again soon we are strong and will stand by each other

- copious amounts of rain
  • By Devin Balentina <blue13x at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 2 Nov 2010 00:51:32 -0400
At around 10pm an area of disturbed weather exploded over parts of Curacao, with the satellite showing impressively tall and cold cloud tops generated
by the intense area of cumulonimbus, causing the meteorological service to issue a special severe weather advisory that’s suppose to last till 12am: http://www.meteo.an/SpecialBulletin_ABC.asp
Frequent cloud to ground lightning has left several areas without power, especially Sta. Maria and vicinity.
The area of disturbed weather has also brought copious amounts of rain, flooding many areas. We had to rush to a family member’s house, where the house was
completely flooded and no electricity. We literally had to walk through a rushing river, in complete darkness to get to the house.

A quick look at the refinery shows the wind blowing the smoke eastward, indicating a winds from the West, the completely opposite direction.
The lightning has died down, but the rain is coming down in impressive amounts.

Stay safe,

Devin

Rain keeps on pooring non stop. We went driving around: neighborhoods near Caracasbaaiweg and in and around Salinja are completely flooded, also at Marie Pompoen. I wonder if Albert Schweitzer school is open tomorrow: water is almost rising into the lower classrooms (and I don't know about leakage).

There were a lot of cars stranded in the high waters on the streets.

At times we could not see anything through the heavy rain. But still hardly any wind.

A lot of lightning in the clouds (seen no beams touch ground) and thunders rolling all around us.

We have rivers in our yard where we have never seen them. Really wonder how things are tomorrow when sun comes up...

Have a safe and dry night,

Natalie

There is almost no wind, but the rain is pooooooooring since past 15 minutes non stop at same strength. And in the distance lightning and thunder. It is a little spooky, since we have no clue what to expect...
It will take a long time for it to pass, because of the lack of wind, I believe. But i am not a pro...

Let's hope it doesn't get any worse.

- Exposed swirl
  • By Devin Balentina <blue13x at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 1 Nov 2010 11:45:12 -0400
Things are very quiet around here in Curacao, with a weak South-East flow. Almost no wind, no rain.
If it wasn’t for satellites you would never think that Tomas is swirling just to the North of us. As you can see from the picture it’s
actually a lot closer than I would have thought. All reports have been talking about a WNW movement, but the last few coordinates seem to tell something else:
It has gone from 14.2N to 13.8N to 13.6N. When I looked at satellites,  this morning I was inclined to think that the center was located near the “Blob” at the back, instead
it’s this almost invisible swirl.

Interesting Marcus, I never thought about the idea of Tomas being picked up, pushed South and than pushed North-east, but that’s indeed what Omar did. So we’ll have to keep a close eye.
That Blob behind Tomas seems likely to be the big weather event for us, unless that swirl decides to take a sudden dive.

Tomas is still heading WSW while the weather in Curacao is very calm on the
southcoast with hardly any wind...

Devin or Robert, can you take a picture at Playa Canoa and post it here while I
continue keeping an eye on the south coast?

Wow! What a big change from last night! Last night I thought all was clear for us, only to find Tomas right next to us in the morning!

Can Curacao expect this to pass very close by? And when can we expect this to happen: today? Tomorrow? Tonight?
The local meteo must still be asleep: no changes in yesterday's news...

Thanks,

- Tomas update
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 1 Nov 2010 04:48:36 -0000
I checked, rechecked, and then checked the parameters and rechecked again.

The computer generated weather forecast models show a 40% chance that Tomas
will dip slightly south on Monday in the direction of Bonaire and then later in
the day head west on Monday and Tuesday to pass Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire. On
Wednesday Tomas will make a u-turn and then head towards Santo Domingo, Haiti
and Cuba.

When Tomas makes its u-turn on Wednesday there is a 50% chance that it will not
curve by heading west and then NW, and then N, and then NE...as a matter of
fact the weather forecasting computer model show Tomas has a 50% chance of
stalling and then turn into SW direction, then S, then into the SE direction
for a couple of hours before moving E and then in the NE direction towards
Santo Domingo, Haiti and Cuba and hitting one of the 3 on Friday...

I understand it is a computer generated weather forecast which has a 50%
probability of not happening, but because the models are not deviating from
this possible forecast I feel compelled to mention it.

Inhabitants of Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire, please do not let your guard down
when Tomas passes Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire on Monday... keep watching and
monitoring Tomas's trajectory until Friday.

- Hurricane Tomas weather forecast update
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 30 Oct 2010 17:35:35 -0000
Good news n bad...n more bad

First the bad...Tomas has developed into a category 1 hurricane with wind-gusts
up to 136 Km/h.

The good news is that is it is currently heading WNW away from Curacao and the
eye of the hurricane has a high chance of passing us due north.

The second bad news tho is that there is a 50% chance that Tomas will pass us,
then make a u-turn by dipping SW then head S, then head SE and then head NE...

which is exactly what OMAR did...when it send storm surge towards our
unprotected southern coastline.

Michiel, check the storm surf, wave periods and direction to confirm this...we
may need to consider to anchor/remove the watchtower near the East pool and
remove other moveable objects from the beaches and other areas along the
southern coastline as a precaution.

- high chance that Curacao will experience the following
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 30 Oct 2010 01:44:44 -0000
We were talking about this storm last week and we saw it had a high chance of
forming somewhere on the doorstep of Bonaire and/or Curacao. Since it was so
close to call.. we waited for the Air Force reconnaissance
aircraft to check it out if ever it did develop.... and whoop there it is!!!

Fred, Michiel, Jaro, Johnny, Frank, Selo, Dutch...let's keep a real close eye
on this one because it could change its track at the very last moment just like
Omar did...

Right now it is forecasted with a high chance to show up on our doorstep during
All Souls Night between 7pm oct 31 and 5 am nov. 1 and cause the following:

- Winds blowing 40 to 60 km/h to direction of northwest or north (from open sea
towards the southern coast).

- Allot of rain...I mean torrential rain like we in Curacao are NOT used
to...so that low land areas that are prone to flooding ought to be evacuated
and the move-able properties moved to higher ground starting Sunday before
nightfall. Please find shelter for pets and livestock too before the rain may
arrive here on Sunday night

- Storm surge up to 16 ft (4.8 m) along the northern shores and high windswept
waves from the open sea towards the southern shoreline.

Right now it is Tropical Storm Status and it could be a Category 1 (one)
hurricane by Sunday night and Monday morning. Furthermore the computer models
show the eye of the storm passing us due north, but this is not certain so we
need to keep a very close eye on this and check updates frequently from now
on...

Knowing that we will get allot of rain.. I mean ALLOT more than our
infrastructure can handle... it is a good idea to keep in mind that the normal
routes to the supermarket and the pharmacy could be blocked by flooded roads
and/or vehicles with stalled engines, so that you ought to stock up on non
perishable supplies and get ice for stuff that needs to be chilled and/or get
fuel for your generator in case aqualectra shuts down as a precautionary
measure or if lightning strikes...

I didn't check stomcarib for a little while now, thinking season is over, for our islands anyway. But this morning I did decide to check once again and notice invest 91 is very likely to come our way??? Right at the very end of this hurricane season!
I wonder what it will bring, but the prognoses is at least heavy weather...

A locally heavy and long thundershower caused a lot of problems this morning.
In the area where I was, Rio Canario, it rained for almost 2 hours. Many
streets were inundated, water run into houses etc. This was, so far, the
heaviest shower I've seen this year and in a long time in Curaçao. I'll try to
get some more pictures and share them.

News is going around of possibly 2(?) tornadoes on the island.  If that’s true, it sure has been a very active season.
Driving home I decided to take some pictures of the impressive and very tall cumulonimbus clouds. Even snapped an image of a very low
hanging part of the cloud. Pictures below. Any reports from Banda Bou?

A really dark sky is approaching right now from SE... I wonder what this will bring. It has been raining all yesterday morning until about 1pm. And last night it has also been raining now and then. I do not hear any thunder rolls, so it must only be heavy rain? Let's see what happens... It is starting to become really dark - it is only 9.40am!

Second note to self... first refill coffee cup and gulp it down prior to posting to stormcarib at 2:10 am

heh

here is what the previous post should be.... sorry about that :)

On sept 22 the long range forecast software showed a high probability of a low pressure area developing into an invest with center area located at 17 N 72 W on September 28, 2010, heading east instead of the normal western track .

But now the slow development of invest 95 is interfering with this new phantom so that on sept 23, the longrange forecasting software shows a low pressure area developing a center of rotation at 18N 83W (farrrrr West of Curacao) and moving first SE, then E, then NE towards Cuba and becoming a hurricane as it roars past the east coast of Florida.

My concern is that it is developing WEST of Curacao and dipping SE before moving NE. The long range forecasting software shows a very low probability of sending big destructive waves into our direction as was the case with Lenny in 1999 and Omar in 2008.

This phantom weather is not visible yet and it is still farrrrr away IF it develops!! These long range forecasts are just heads up warnings to indicate where the next danger may be lurking and can change anytime due to the still unpredictable nature of weather all around it. My advise to Amy, Pearl and Roy of Aruba and Annie in Bonaire is to keep an eye on the WEST for anything developing west of us and monitor the track of its center of rotation so we can possibly predict when and if it sends big waves towards us as was the case with Lenny (archive: http://stormcarib.com/hurr99c.htm#td16) and Omar (archive: http://stormcarib .com/reports/2008/curacao.shtml).

Who was it again who called my longrange weather forecasting software phantom weather?

Anywho... On sept 22 the long range forecast software showed a high probability of a low

17 N 72 W on September 28, 2010, heading east instead of the normal western

Hello Roy, Amy and Pearl in Aruba and Annie in Bonaire... how's things over there ? And how is everyone else doing tonight or this morning (if you are up late like myself...)

Over here things are contrary to the forecast very quiet as Invest 95 is building in strength with now winds up to 35 mph and a low of 1007. Curacao is located at 12.2 N 69W so that the "center" of invest 95 has passed us and is located north of Aruba as you can read in the tracking info below.

The weather forecast still calls for heavy rain and thunderstorms so that I took precautions by unplugging all non-essential electrical devices at my house and that of my father in law Pim Landheer and my own mum to prevent power surge due to lightning... which is kinda weird since in Curacao we are looking up at the night sky and we see a nearly cloudless sky and a very bright full moon accompanied by a very bright star or planet. Please look at the windguru forecast near bottom of page.

The windguru forecast also calls for wind from the south blowing north to shore so we need to keep an eye on the possible arrival of portugese man of war and other stinging marine creatures such as the blue button and jellyfish. If stung by portugese man of war you can best apply nonscalding hot water by spraying 45 degrees celsius water on the stung skin for 30 minutes or immerse stung body water in 45 degrees celsius hot water for 30 minutes. The venom of portugese man of war is molecule based so that the hot water will solidify the venom. The long soaking or immersion time will allow the heat to penetrate deep under the skin and tissue to solidify the venom so that the body can disperse of it from there on without problem. Solidification of the venom will neutralize it and reduce the pain significantly. DO NOT USE VINAGER for portugese man of war stings as this will only neutralize superficial venom and not the venom underneath the skin and may potentally cause more problems and pain for an alrready traumatized victim. The heat treatment I have personally applied on several victims with great, positive, documented result.

By the way the next coral spawning will take place 3 to 4 days from tonights full moon so who's joining me for a night dive in Curacao to witness sex on the reef??? Email me for info in regards to where to meet and what you need to take along and how to set your underwater camera for recording great photo and video footage of this awesome event of coral spawning!! For the estimated times of each coral's sexual productivity click here for the PDF file

Below you can see the forecast of windguru and below that the current conditions being reported by the meteorological department of the Dutch Antilles which reads sept 15 as date of current weather at http://www.weather.an/current/index.asp?stationid=TNCC  ....whereas today is sept 23...aaight ?!?

around 2pm , and now it is hot again at almost 5pm. The satellite image of
Stormcarib shows that we are dead center in the middle of bad weather. Actually
we only have flat seas at the southern coast, hot weather, and almost zero wind
at almost 5pm... hmm...

How are things in Aruba and Bonaire? Do you have a similar quiet nada nada
going on?

- low down south of Haiti moving east to SSS islands

The long range forecast software is showing a high probability of a low
pressure area developing into an invest with center area of the low located at
17.2 N 72.1 W (due south of the coast of Dominican Republic and Haiti) on
September 28, 2010, heading east instead of the normal western track.

This low is not yet visible, and you can see it on the satellite map of
stormcarib around sept 27-28.

Long range forecasts of 6 x 24 hours serve only as a heads up warning, and can
change over the course of time, so I will update this daily for the next 6 days.

This system is wayyyy out of range of the ACB islands, but it is heading
towards our friends, the SSS islands of the Dutch islands and other islands up
north.

GODspeed to ALL,

What's the weather like right now in Curacao?

Right now no rain, partially overcast blue skies, and it's hot, hot, hot. So it
is perfect weather for swimming in the cool Caribbean Sea at Bapor Kibra,
Mambo, and the hotels on the south coast.

What does the weather look like later tonight and tomorrow?
Curacao is still being affected by invest 95. There is 30 to 50 percent chance
of thunderstorms and heavy rains at times which are produced by the "tail" of
invest 95. So it is a perfect weather for catching a movie at the cinemas or
renaissance or visiting the many art galleries with works of local artists..
check your kpasa for more info.

What does the long range weather forecasting software predict?
There is a high probability of a low pressure system developing south of Santo
Domingo/Hait and its center of rotation is heading east towards Sint Maarten,
Sint Eustatius, Saba, and other islands in their area. I checked and rechecked
and rechecked once more. It is no glitch in the software, it is moving east
instead of west. So will keep posting updates about this for the next 8 days.

Via this writing I wish to warn the local fishermen to watch out for high seas
at the Northern shoreline of Curacao. For the local surfers this means SURF's
UP at Playa Canoa on Sept 23 and 24. The best spot will be at Klein Curacao if
you can leave on Sept 22 in order to arrive ahead of the waves and camp
overnight on the beaches of Klein Curacao.

The best spot is still at the northern shoreline of Belize or the southern
shoreline of Jamaica :(

CYA at Canoa on Friday if you can weather the rain...!

The long range software shows a high probability that invest 95 could be
upgraded on september 25 with a low of 1002 and center area of rotation at 13 N
82 W with a western track towards Belize.

This is wayyyyyy past Aruba so this is good news for the ACB islands, but not
so good news for Belize :( :( :(

  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 22 Sep 2010 04:42:34 -0000
Invest 95 is developing slow which is good news for the ACB islands. This means
that it may develop into a storm when it has passed Aruba. At about 3 pm on
september 21 the western most bands of invest 95 arrived bringing dark skies,
lightning and heavy rain of short duration in different locations in Curacao.
No funnel clouds were witnessed. Currently at 04:38 GMT (12:38 local time) on
September 22 we are experiencing a light drizzle on some spots, with no
visible/audible lightning.

Hello everyboby
First of all we have to thank God for sparing Bermuda of the worst
Now  my remark:
When Marcus de Maaijer posted on the 14th of september some information
regarding the computer model who predicted that something you couldn't see
would pop-up 4 days from then a 7 days later it should be moving west toward
Bonaire it got my interest.
When on the 15th and 17th there was a follow-up pointing 21 - 22 september
as possible date that a low pressure area should form near the ABC islands it
made me more curious.
There is was 19 - 20  east of the leeward islands moving west toward the ABC
islands on 21 - 22 and heading to Belize.
Now we're looking to some rain, thunder and lightning to come later on.
So Marcus good job and work up to excellency.
Congratulation

Robert.

  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 21 Sep 2010 13:16:27 -0000
Now you can see the phantom that I warned about since Sept 14 has appeared
north of Margarita Island. It is much further north from the ACB islands,
Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire than forecasted by the computer software that I
used... But anyway, here it is, and it is forecasted to head towards the
Yucatan Peninsula.

Also, since it is so far north, it does not appear to be able to produce enough
sea wind to bring nice swells to our Playa Canoa surfer beach in Curacao.

In any case boaters along the north side of Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba need to
take care in case of a sudden gail such as we experienced last year in Aruba,
since September and the first half of October are notorious time periods for
gail winds, waterspouts and other uncommon weather phenomenons for the ACB
islands.

GODSPEED to all.

pictures and video, please share them on www.dushicuracao.net

I didn't read any updates about how Bermuda weathered the storm yet, I'll do so later today. I hope it was not too bad and no injuries!
Here it was not as bad as I expected last night anyway: the thunder which was all around didn't make landfall, at least not on the 'Banda Riba' part where we live (Salinja area). It did rain, which is good. This morning (around 7am) no wind at all and dark clouds, but no rain. Now a slight breeze and pretty sunny...

I was just bringing my son to bed when we heard a sudden very strong wind gust banging on his windows. Until then and the entire day there has hardly been any wind, a very hot day. The wind kept going until now as I am writing this (few minutes later) it is going down again. Very strange... But it is nice because it certainly made the temperature go down. Not sure what tonight will bring us. It seems it will be a pretty sleepless night, with maybe also some heavy rain and thunder. I see the lightening against the dark skies already, coming from Venezuela. Oh, and now the winds are really picking up again... Very strange...

Good night.

Secondly, let's start collecting food and medical supplies o DONATE for Bermuda which we can fly in by helicopter ASAP after Igor passes!!

Below is a computer generated model for Sept 24, 2010 for educational purpose and just as a heads up warning for the possibility of a low pressure area forming at 63W 12N on possibly Sept 21-22 and then move possibly WNW towards Belize passing Bonaire Curacao and Aruba.

you can go to this webpage and you can write/tweak/co-develop software for noncommercial purpose
to tap into the weather diagnostics data of universities, buoys, sea vessels, port authorities, nasa, nhc,
noaa, coastal Doppler radar, and more and create your own computer generated weather forecast models

ps: to combat the heat you can turn on the ac, orrr get an Abiko bladeless fan which is especially a great asset if you have small kids wandering about because this fan has no blades...yes no b.s.....it's like owning a miniature hurricane inside my house...and kids can't hurt their tiny fingers no more

On Wednesday Sept 15 2010 the weather was perfect for a Sunchild: it was HOT, dang HOT between noon and 3pm, which is perfect if you were born on the surface of the sun :)

What's the weather outlook for Thursday sept 16 2010 in Curacao?

Hot ! Dang HOT... with glassy seas and no meaningful wind to speak of which is great for motorpowered boats and not so great for the many sailboats that have visited us.

No wind and hot weather is not so great for the animals who need wind to hunt the fish from which they extract fresh potable water. In Curacao seabirds do not have access to fresh water. If you have some fresh fish leftover... please give it to the pelicans, brown boobies, and the magnificent frigatebirds. Thanks in advance!

Godspeed to all.

ghostly weather systems :) is what someone wrote :)

as a weather correspondent you can do two things or 3...

1. hang a towel outside in your plain sight and wait what the weather does to
it. If it is wet: the weather report says: rain. If it is stiff, the weather
report says: frost. If it is waving around, the weather report says: breezy.
And if it is gone, the weather report says: tornado. :)

2a. you watch a weather report on tv or any misc website and copy and paste
what they say/write and post it here to stormcarib dot com
2b. you sit on your back porch, watch from your balcony or you can drive around
your island(not recommended) and post your observations here to stormcarib dot
com

3. or you can go to http://wareseeker.com/free-weather-program/ and you can
write/tweak/co-develop software to tap into the weather diagnostics data of
universities, buoys, sea vessels, port authorities, nasa, nhc, noaa, coastal
Doppler radar, and more and create your own computer generated weather forecast
models and be alert about something that isn't even visible yet as a heads up
warning...

- heads up for ACB islands on sept 22
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 15 Sep 2010 13:37:05 -0000

Below is a computer generated weather forecast model which predicts that something may pop up in the vincinity of the ACB islands Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire and move WNW very close past aforementioned islands. How close? Let's keep an eye on anything developing in the region east of the ACB islands for the next 3 to 5 days.

The computer generated weather forecast model below is one out of 5 possible scenarios for september 22, 2010.

Since it is one of many future possible weather events and not even visible right now on the radar, it just serves as a heads up and nothing more.

ps: Michiel, Rocio, Lisa, Patrick, Carlito, Alex, Timo... let's wax the boards and get ready to go to Klein Curacao for some surfing!!!

We are all staring in awe at Igor which is building to cat 5. Whereas people
living in south east Australia are thinking whoop dee doo :) cuz they are being
hammered by waves with a max height of 45 ft offshore and cumulating to 55 ft
as they hit mainland. I wonder what southeast Australia's coast looks like...is
it beaches or tall cliffs?

Anywho, even though Igor has reached 19.0 N, let's get ready for the stormsurge
waves with a height of 10 to 22 ft and associated winds as it passes you guys
up north.

Igor is pulling Julia along in its wake.

Karl is a poses a potential danger to Central American mountain villages for
mudslides...

That 4th bad weather system I mentioned yesterday is still not visible, but the
computer models still show it will develop a few days from now and after
heading for Bonaire it recurves towards the African continent, so that it will
only be a threat to the Japanese "Research Vessels"

Come on people I know we can pray better than that to get Igor to curve to
NE... so far Igor and Julia are still moving West. So forget about the computer
models and let's pray for Igor to move to Latitude 19.0 N

Much more west is invest 92...and then there is a 4th one which we can't see
yet but the computer model predicts it to pop up 4 days from now and then 7
days from now it could be moving W towards Bonaire.

In the attached image below you can see Igor and Julia and the top of the image
and the unnamed bad weather system east of us...

once more this is just another computer model that only serves as a heads up
warning to indicate that something could be brewing while we all focus on Igor
and Julia.

So come on folks, LET's PRay Igor to head North and dragging Julia along in its
wake and then watch invest 92 and get ready for a possible 4th contender
entering our weather arena

- let's pray for I g o r to curve NE back into the Atlantic
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 13 Sep 2010 05:05:57 -0000
Past two days have been dry after previously having big buckets of skywater
dumped on us by Invest 92 causing family homes businesses and schools being
overwhelmed by flash floods here and there in some spots whereas 80% percent of
the island was rather happy getting some much needed rain after a dry spell.

The computer models show 20 to 35 percent chance of more rain in the week to
come, but nothing major to worry about.

As my friend from St. Croix already pointed out, computer models serve as a
tool but need not be interpreted literally as 100% accurate. They are just
giving us a heads up for possible scenarios. The actual data we need to
re-evaluate over and over again without the aid of a computer.

We had all hoped for Igor to bend off to North and eventually curve back into
the Atlantic Ocean. Lo and behold it is now dipping south. So come on people
let's pray for that North-East curve because it is a no joke Cat 4 now!!!

- Rain and more rain
  • By Wycliffe Franklin <wycliffe.l.franklin at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2010 21:39:01 -0400
Well the rain is pouring down in sheets it has been a long time since Curacao has seen so much
rain. Lightning and thunder are all over the place and i know their are many places that are affected by flood
I live near the refinery and the siren just went off maybe lightening has struck again as it did with 2 petroleum tanks
here in Curacao and Bonaire which caused the tanks to catch fire the one in Bonaire is still burning
here in Curacao we have poor drainage and when rain pours as it is now there is a lot of problem the water has no where to go
I know it is going to be a mess tomorrow and fire fighters will have their hands full. I just asked my wife if she has any clothes
on the line outside because the smoke from the burning tank in Bonaire is over us and the rain mixing with it and it is all over
our car

So long we are still looking east where the next storm is forming
if there is any damage to report i will send my report

Another wave of heavy rain has arrived.

There is an unconfirmed report of a lightning strike in Bandabou and power
outage as a result thereof. That is a 45 minute drive from my location during a
sunny day. Devin what have you heard?

People it's time to gather your candles, matches and flashlights... it looks
like this ride is not gonna stop for awhile tonight.

The rain has reduced to a drizzle but there is still lightning. On the attached
radar image courtesy of Meteorological Services of the southern Dutch Antilles
you can see in the lower right quadrant what more is heading our way in Curacao.

Curacao is in the center of the image and Bonaire is east of us.

Moments ago thunder rang loud and now there is a heavy downpour coming down in
Brievengat, Sun Valley, Sunset Heights and Schelpwijk.

There is also the eerie sound of a freight train due north of my location, even
though there are no trains in Curacao....can't make it in the dark night sky

The bad weather system that started out moving in from West to East has now
formed into a thunderstorm over Bandariba in Curacao where it is stationary, is
growing in size and panning out in the south direction. Heavy rain has been
reported in Brievengat, Schelpwijk, Cas Cora, Zuid/Noord Popo, Scherpenheuvel
and Montagne Rey. The lightning has only been intra cloud and no ground strikes
have been witnessed so far.

  • By <blue13x at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2010 13:34:38 -0400
Currently we are experiencing extremely heavy rains and lightning each 10 to 20 seconds
The flashes and the thunder are coming in at the same time. On the Western part of the island it’s somewhat clear and the cell is on Eastern side.
This gives us a unique vantage point of being able to see Cumulonimbus cloud right above, from the bottom part up to the very top.

A few minutes ago we experienced in the area Amerikanenkamp what seemed like a direct hit!  Also on the radio they are talking about a waterspout being spotted.

Haven’t seen this kind of weather in a while.

- follow up about yesterday and new TINY system today affecting Curacao
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 9 Sep 2010 15:45:13 -0000
Yesterday Curacao had two confirmed funnel clouds. One at 11:30 am which blew
tiles off the roofs of buildings near Grote Berg, and another at approx noon
which went over unpopulated terrain north of Koraal Tabak. A lightning strike
at Bullenbaai, including a large plume of black smoke, was witnessed at a
distance of 12 km east by staff at Bapor Kibra tourism facilities and the fire
department extinguished the fire as a consequences of the lightning strike. No
personal injuries have taken place. Thank God for that !!

Today a similar small system of bad weather is heading along the northern side
of the island Curacao moving very slowly from west to east, which is the
opposite direction of our tradewind. On the attached map you can see it how
tiny it is, with very dark clouds again over Grote Berg (which is on the map
the narrowest small center part of Curacao.

August and September is when we have the highest chances in the year to get
water spouts or tiny funnel clouds, so let's keep a vigilant eye on the sky and
remove debris from our yards, and work areas, and school properties that can be
easily picked up by a small funnel cloud and pose danger to people and animals
in the area.

- locally heavy thundershower in Curacao
  • By Elton Sint Jago <curacaomaster at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 8 Sep 2010 15:47:04 -0700 (PDT)
This morning as we woke up, we could feel it's going to be as hot as it was
last week. There was almost no wind. Around 10:00, while at work, it started
raining a little bit. Then it stopped and about half an hour later it started
again, pouring down with a lot of lightning and thunder for about 1 to 1,5
hours. The combination of no wind, the heat and high humidity caused this local
funnel cloud to form and there was also a small tornado causing light damage to
a couple of houses. Many streets were flooded. Apparently the western part of
the island didn't get rain at all! Conditions will stay favourable for
thundershowers coming night and tomorrow morning.

The picture of the little tornado, looking towards the east, is thanks to

- blue skies again in Curacao
  • By marcus at dushicuracao.net
  • Date: 8 Sep 2010 19:42:48 -0000
That weird storm cell that passed over us that was moving from west to east is
all gone now and blue skies are back again. The sea is flat like a mirror, the
air is hot and there is no significant wind. This bad weather cell was so small
that we did not even notice it on the weather radar nor on the satellite maps.
The road that we call the "Ring around Willemstad" was partially flooded as was
the case in the streets of Otrobanda, Punda, Penstraat, Gosieweg and other low
areas that are prone to floading when thunderstorms dump allot of rain in a
very short period of time. This skywater was welcome though since we had a dry
spell for quite some time.

Everything preceding this one was boot camp.

The last time I personally threw caution into the wind (no pun intended) is
when I was living in the westernmost mountains of North Carolina and I laughed
at an acquaintance who was making preparations for the arrival of tropical
storm Opal. Twenty-four hours later trees with up to 4 feet diameters were
uprooted by wind and flash floods, blocking all roads in my neighborhood and
cutting off communications and electricity for two weeks.

I didn't mind the peace and quiet due to no electricity, but two weeks without
communications with my family in Curacao... that was hard...

Please keep in mind that the attachments are computer models of possible future
events and not actually happening yet, so the that actual location of this
system can still change.

With a sigh of relief we are happy that our brothers and sisters of the Dutch
Antilles and others affected by Earl are safe and sound. The marines and
military engineers that were dispatched from Curacao and Aruba to assist in
Saba, St.Maarten and St. Eustatius have arrived last night and this morning and
communications should be back up by later today. Uprooted trees, sea containers
that were washed ashore and other potential hazards are being cleared and life
should return back to normal asap.

We have enough other things to be concerned about such as the process of
dismanteling the Dutch Antilles by 10 Cot. 2010.

After a pretty slow start, the Hurricane season is really picking up with Danielle, Earl and Fiona all at the same time.

Should be interesting to see how Fiona and Earl interact with each other. According to Dr.Masters from Wunderground.com: “A scenario predicted by the GFS, GFDL, and HWRF models is for Fiona to be drawn into the low pressure wake of Earl and pass to the northeast of the Lesser Antilles. Earl would then eventually destroy Fiona through high wind shear, and by robbing the storm of its moisture.”

There seems to be yet another strong wave a bit more to the South that has been holding together for quite some time now. Makes me remember Hurricane Felix a few years ago. It too started as wave staying more to the South.

As for the weather in Curacao: dry, hot and not much wind, which is expected when tropical systems are in the area. Which also reminds me, August and September are the months when landspouts, waterspouts and small tornadoes have been known to form on the ABC islands, so there’s a lot to keep an eye out these days.

Stay safe,

Devin Balentina

I have never before seen such a pearl necklace of bad weather above the ITCZ...

The other weird thing is that buckets of rain dumped on Bonaire just 10 miles
to our east... floading their streets, and the same happened to Aruba (12 miles
to our west) 14 hours later and my island Curacao is centered between both
islands and we got zero, nada, nothing other than sunny skies. :P

You'd think that because we get so much sun....we'd be a nation powered by
solar energy, but we're not. We're powered by wind energy and we are not
getting any wind lately... just sun... :P

Does anyone have a good tip for solar energy to power 12 wireless IP cameras
that we use to monitor the rehabilitation of orphaned wild birds prior to their
release back into the wild habitats in order to make em full wireless, because
electrical wiring currently defeats the purpose...

In the meantime, keep a vigilant eye on the pearl necklace of bad weather above
the ITCZ, and wish for more sun and rain and nwithout destructive stormsurge,
waves and wind.

- possible natural dengue cure
  • By marcus at curacaowildlife.com
  • Date: 31 Jul 2010 12:18:22 -0000
Hello,

by way of this letter I wish to get in touch with the director of your
country's government health department. Please send their contact info to my
contact info below. In my island Curacao we have invasive flora called
"Euphorbia hirta". Due to the fact that they only grow on or near land of local
flora nurseries I believe that the plant was possibly imported in the earth or
palm fronds from one Asian country to my island Curacao.

This plant may prevent dengue deaths.

Please let me know how and where I can send live specimens of this plant and/or
seeds so that the government medical staff of your country can test the
effectiveness of this plant to possibly prevent future deaths from dengue type
1, 2, 3, or 4. I wish to carefully point out that there is no scientific data
presently in my possession that "Euphorbia hirta" indeed cures dengue. By
consuming the beverage made from "Euphorbia hirta" every hour a person's blood
platelet count may remain between 150.000 and 400.000 range when it has dropped
below in the 20.000 to 100.000 range, and it may break the fever too. Why step
out on a limb and come forth with this writing? I simply do not wish to idly
stand by the sidelines and do nothing as more of our friends in the Caribbean
and bordering countries on the mainland succumb to the terrible dengue disease.

The plant is prepared as follows in Asia:

Take 5 to 6 full grown "Euphorbia hirta" plants (Max height is 40 cm).
Cut off the roots, wash, clean and chop them up.
Bring water in a pot to a boil, turn off the heat.
Add chopped "Euphorbia hirta" plants to hot water and let stand for 1 to 2
minutes.
Sift the water to remove plant debris, and let cool.
The dengue fever victim may consume the "Euphorbia hirta" liquid for 24 hours
by sipping 1 to 1.5 glasses every 1 hour.

In Asia the plant is called ju-chih ts'ao, fei-yang ts'ao, ta nai-chiang ts'ao,
ta fei-yang, and ta ju-chih ts'ao.

Another manner to administer:
Add 1 tea spoon of dried, ground "Euphorbia hirta" to one (1) cup of hot water,
simmer the tea for 20 minutes, consume one (1) cup hourly.

for more info please email me at marcus at curacaowildlife.com

In the hopes this info may benefit the good health for you and yours, I remain,

sincerely,

While driving from home from work I noticed a huge area of thunderstorms that almost had the shape of a mushroom cloud that
you’d normally associate with a Atom-bomb. A quick check on local radar reveals an area of thunderstorms right over the Peninsula of Paraguana. (See shot

Hi everybody
After a long time we woke up this morning with some rain.
At this moment it's getting stronger. Looking at the latest satellite imagery we can see a lot of rain coming our way. So the fathers are blessed today.
Hope the people in Haiti stay safe with the pass of the tropical sistem in central caribean.
Stay safe everyboby,

Robert

- At last rain and thunder

I woke up this morning at 5 am to a strange sound. I could not believe my ears it was thunder.

We haven’t heard thunder for months but here it is this morning with some wind and rain.

It did not last for more than 15 minutes but for us in Curacao it is a nice feeling.

Rain seems to hate us whenever you look on the satellite and see the clouds coming in our direction

Before you can count to 10 it disappears. It is all quite again. I was a bit scared because today the world cup begins

And I have a satellite dish and whenever there are clouds in the sky it tells me no signal. If this should happen

I will be the most miserable person today football is all  I dream about these days. Everything is quit again

I am going back to bed to take a little nap before the world cup kicks off.

Hip hip for Holland let us do it this time.

- 30 minute Thunderstorms

Was awaken by distant thunder at about 5am. Small area of intense thunderstorms
has formed near Curacao and possibly Bonaire. We had some very gusty winds,
heavy rain and not frequent, but intense cloud to groud lightning action.
Enough that I decide to pull power of the DSL modem and router.
Only lasted about 30 minutes, but very intense. Couldnt see much on satelite
though.
Time to go back to sleep. Greetings from Curacao.

- a little rain

Yesterday Curacao welcomed a few rain showers and wind between noon and 3 pm
from SSW.

Today we have some partially clouded, sunny skies and 29 degrees Celsius with a
cool NE breeze.

Good luck to our friends in the Caribbean because it is forecasted to be a
bumpy ride through this storm season.

Tomorrow morning Curacao may see some light rain during the morning hours. It's been dry for quite some time so we will accept every little drop of skywater that we can get right now.
